The Eocene sediments of southern Maryland and adjacent Virginia have yielded multilocular fruits assignable to the extinct generaWetherellia Bowerbank andPalaeowetherellia Chandler. This is the first report of their co-occurrence in one deposit.Wetherellia has previously been reported from the Eocene of southern England and West Germany (two species), whilePalaeowetherellia has been reported from the Eocene and possibly latest Cretaceous of Egypt (one species). APalaeowetherellia-like fruit has been reported from the Eocene of southeastern North America.Wetherellia marylandica comb. nov. andPalaeowetherellia species are described; new information is provided for the previously established speciesWetherellia variabilis andW. dixonii. The familial assignment of both genera is reviewed.Palaeowetherellia is most similar to fruits of the tribe Hippomaneae of the Euphorbiaceae, whileWetherellia finds counterparts in the Euphorbiaceae and the Meliaceae. While the exact affinities ofWetherellia are difficult to resolve through comparison to modern fruits, the similarity ofWetherellia andPalaeowetherellia might suggest that the former is more likely euphorbiaceous than meliaceous. The discovery of these New World members of both genera reinforces the importance of floristic exchange across the North Atlantic in earliest Tertiary time.  相似文献

Abstract: The controversial taxon Colombitherium tolimense (Mammalia) (probably Late Eocene in age) from Colombia, although known for nearly 40 years, still bears much mystery. Aside from the problematic ordinal attribution of the holotype and only specimen, its determination as an upper or lower jaw remains a highly debated issue. New observations include the presence of a contact facet on the distal face of the most posterior tooth, which indicates that the fragmentary jaw preserves three premolars and two molars; the M3, unpreserved but present, being most probably reduced. This new interpretation completely fits the morphology of the teeth. Furthermore, the shape of these latter and the deeper wear encompassed by their lingual part relative to the labial one is typical of upper dentition. This is in agreement with the internal curving of the roots of the anterior premolars and with several other arguments that lead interpreting the holotype of C. tolimense as a maxillary bearing P2‐M2. This new interpretation deepens the morphological gap between Colombitherium and other pyrotherians (except Proticia) and challenges further its referral to Pyrotheria. The peculiar morphology of Colombitherium relative to other pyrotherians is indeed striking. In fact, Colombitherium has nothing in common with pyrotherians but bilophodont cheek teeth, a feature largely widespread in placental mammals. It is here referred to ?Pyrotheria until additional evidence of its relationships is known. Associated with the putative removal of Proticia from Pyrotheria as argued by some authors, the hypothetical removal of Colombitherium from the order would adjust the widely accepted assumption that the pyrotherian bilophodont cheek teeth originated from bunodont cheek teeth. It would also make an origin from lophodont forms plausible. This in turn would have critical relevance, especially to the hypothesis that pyrotherians are notoungulates.  相似文献

A report on the pterosaurian remains from the Lower Cretaceous of Anoual, Morocco, is presented. The material consists of teeth possibly documenting two groups. One of them cannot be clearly established but might be ornithocheirid, while the most numerous teeth are reminiscent of those of gnathosaurine. This possible attribution might be consistent with a Berriasian age for the calcareous lens containing the microvertebrate assemblages of Anoual.  相似文献

The effects of whole-body exposure to ambient temperatures of −15°C and 23°C on selected performance-related physiological variables were investigated in elite nonasthmatic cross-country skiers. At an ambient temperature of −15°C we also studied the effects of the selective β2-adrenergic agonist Salbutamol (0.4 mg × 3) which was administered 10 min before the exercise test. Eight male cross-country skiers with known maximal oxygen uptakes (O2 max ) of more than 70 ml · kg−1 · min−1 participated in the study. Oxygen uptake (O2), heart rate (f c), blood lactate concentration ([La]b) and time to exhaustion were measured during controlled submaximal and maximal running on a treadmill in a climatic chamber. Lung function measured as forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) was recorded immediately before the warm-up period and at the conclusion of the exercise protocol. Submaximal O2 and [La]b at the two highest submaximal exercise intensities were significantly higher at −15°C than at 23°C. Time to exhaustion was significantly shorter in the cold environment. However, no differences in O2 max or f c were observed. Our results would suggest that exercise stress is higher at submaximal exercise intensities in a cold environment and support the contention that aerobic capacity is not altered by cold exposure. Furthermore, we found that after Salbutamol inhalation FEV1 was significantly higher than after placebo administration. However, the inhaled β2-agonist Salbutamol did not influence submaximal and maximal O2, f c, [La]b or time to exhaustion in the elite, nonasthmatic cross-country skiers we studied. Fossil scorpions are among the oldest terrestrial arthropods known from the fossil record. They have a worldwide distribution and a rich fossil record, especially for the Paleozoic. Fossil scorpions from Mesozoic and Cenozoic deposits are usually rare (except in amber-deposits). Here, we describe the only fossil scorpion from the Early to Middle Eocene Pesciara Lagerstätte in Italy. Eoeuscorpius ceratoi gen. et sp. nov. is probably a genus and species within the family Euscorpiidae. This may be the first fossil record of the Euscorpiidae, which are so far only known from four extant genera. Eoeuscorpius ceratoi gen. et sp. nov. was found in the “Lower Part” of the Pesciara Limestone, which is actually dated Late Ypresian stage (between 49.5 and 49.7 Ma). Besides a possible pseudoscorpion, the here-described fossil scorpion is the second arachnid species known from the Bolca Locality.  相似文献

Albanerpeton inexpectatum Estes and Hoffstetter, 1976, the type species of Albanerpeton and the geologically youngest albanerpetontid, is rediagnosed and redescribed based on a large collection of jaws and frontals from Miocene fissure fills near La Grive-Saint-Alban, southeastern France. Intraspecific variation is documented in these elements, and is attributed to growth and individual differences. Synapomorphies of the upper jaws indicate that A. inexpectatum a) belongs in a clade whose members are otherwise known from the Upper Cretaceous-Paleocene of North America and b) is the sister species of an undescribed North American Paleocene species. The presence of A. inexpectatum in the Miocene of France is postulated to be the result of an Early or Middle Tertiary dispersal of an unknown ancestral species from North America into Europe. Cranial apomorphies of A. inexpectatum are interpreted as having strengthened the skull for burrowing in rocky soil and feeding.  相似文献

In the Upper Devonian Sander Schichten (Adorfian δ) of Bergisch Gladbach well preserved remains of graptolites have been found. These are the first grapto-lites ever detected in post-ordovician beds of the Bergisches Land. They belong to the AcanthograptidaeBulman and in this account are referred to? Palaeodictyota montana n. sp. Thus we can add to the DendrograptidaeRoemer, known for a long time from postsilurian beds, an Upper Devonian genus of different family affinities.  相似文献

MTDH(metadherin), an important oncogene that is widely overexpressed in various cancers, is a potential biomarker of tumor malignancy. Variants in MTDH have been associated with susceptibility to breast cancer. However, no studies assessing MTDH gene polymorphisms and their potential relationship to ovarian cancer susceptibility have been reported. Thus, we investigated the association of MTDH (−470G>A) polymorphism with ovarian cancer development in 145 ovarian cancer patients and 254 matched control subjects, using sequence analysis. We found that the MTDH (−470G>A) polymorphism was statistically correlated with ovarian cancer risk (under the additive genetic model, GG vs. GA vs AA, P = 0.042). Compared with genotypes containing the G allele (GG and GA), the AA genotype may decrease the risk of ovarian cancer (P = 0.0198, OR = 0.33, 95% CI [0.12∼0.78]). Compared with the G allele, the A allele is protective against ovarian cancer risk (P = 0.01756, OR = 0.66, 95% CI [0.46∼0.93]). Furthermore, a statistically significant association between the GG and GA+AA genotypes and the clinical stage was observed (P = 0.038). These data suggest that MTDH (−470G>A) could be a useful molecular marker for assessing ovarian cancer risk and for predicting ovarian cancer patient prognosis.  相似文献

Although rare, dinosaurs are well preserved in calcareous nodules of the Santana Formation (Early Cretaceous, ?Albian) of the Araripe Basin, in northeastern Brazil. So far, including only a spinosauroid and three coelurosaurs, the dinosaur fauna appears depauperate. High theropod diversity in assemblages where other dinosaurs are rare or absent is not unique to the Santana Formation. It is seen also in several other assemblages, including Solnhofen and the Maevarano Formation of Madagascar. We consider several factors, including the occurrence of intraguild predation, the possibility that small theropods could subsist in marginal environments, and reliance on coastal resources, that may have been responsible for this apparent ecological imbalance. A new coelurosaur from the Santana Formation, here formally named Mirischia asymmetrica, is shown to be distinct from Santanaraptor placidus [Kellner, A.W.A. () “Short note on a new dinosaur (Theropoda, Coelurosauria) from the Santana Formation (Romualdo Member, Albian) northeastern Brazil”, Boletim do Museu Nacional, Nova Serie, Rio de Janeiro, Brasil 49, 1–8]. Other theropods from the Santana Formation are briefly reviewed. Mirischia is a compsognathid, more similar to the European Compsognathus than to the Asian Sinosauropteryx.  相似文献

A comparative morphometric analysis of isolated proximal and intermediate phalanges attributed to the paromomyids Ignacius graybullianus and Phenacolemur simonsi was undertaken to test the hypothesis that these fossil phalanges exhibit evidence of a dermopteran-like interdigital patagium. Linear dimensions were collected for the fossil phalanges and a comparative sample of associated proximal and intermediate phalanges representing extant tree squirrels, tree shrews, dermopterans (colugos), gliding rodents and marsupials, and prosimian primates. Quantitative data indicate that the proximal and intermediate phalanges of paromomyids are most similar in their overall shape to those of the dermopteran Cynocephalus. The proximal phalanges of paromomyids and colugos possess well-developed flexor sheath ridges and broad, high shafts, whereas the intermediate phalanges of these taxa are most similar to one another in their trochlear morphology. Discriminant analysis indicates that all of the paromomyid intermediate phalanges resemble those from colugo toes more so than those from colugo fingers. Moreover, the relative length and midshaft proportions of both the proximal and intermediate phalanges of paromomyids closely resemble those of several squirrels that lack an interdigital patagium. The following conclusions are drawn from this study: 1) paromomyids share a number of derived phalangeal features with modern dermopterans that may be indicative of a phylogenetic relationship between them, 2) existing intermediate phalanges of paromomyids are inconsistent with the “mitten gliding” hypothesis because they do not possess the distinctive length and midshaft proportions characteristic of colugo manual intermediate phalanges, and 3) paromomyids share with colugos and the scaly-tailed squirrel Anomalurus several aspects of phalangeal morphology functionally related to frequent vertical clinging and climbing on large-diameter arboreal supports. Using as a probe [3H]-DPPE (N,N-diethyl-2-[(4-phenylmethyl)phenoxy]ethanamine HCl), a novel compound selective for the antiestrogen binding site (AEBS), new evidence is presented that this site could be a growth-promoting histamine receptor of a type not previously described (?H3). In the rat uterus, DPPE alone at a concentration of 4 mg/kg acts as an estrogen antagonist, unlike TAM alone which is a partial estrogen agonist. In the presence of exogenous estradiol, both TAM and DPPE are partial antagonists. This suggests that the "antiestrogenic" effects of tamoxifen are mediated through AEBS/?H3 while the estrogenic effects are mediated through ER.  相似文献

Detailed anatomical study of the solute Girvanicystis batheri from the Girvan starfish bed (Ashgill) has enabled the oral partition, hydropore, gonopore and the possible opening of a branchial slit to be identified. The distal part of the alimentary tract and the stomach were located in the posterior part of the head. Structures preserved as steinkernen are interpreted as a brain and left cranial nerve. The gross anatomy of G. batheri supports the hypothesis that it was a suspension feeder. Girvanicystis batheri is characterized by large plates on the dorsal surface of the head, 20 rings of the feeding arm and a nodular median plate on the ventral surface of the head. A new species of Girvanicystis, G. casteri , is described from the Sholeshook limestone (Ashgill) of South Wales. Girvanicystis casteri is distinguished from G. batheri in that the former has narrower head, a longer feeding arm and a spine on the median plate of the ventral surface of the head. Girvanicystis batheri has characters in common with the cornute Ceratocystis perneri , namely large plates of the skeleton of the head, right and left marginal flanges, opposite dorsal fore tail plates and alternate ventral fore tail plates, which suggest that G. batheri may also be a stem chordate.  相似文献

The cuticles of many extant seed plants display distinct surface microreliefs, which represent adaptations to certain habitat conditions or mechanical defences against herbivores and phytopathogenic microorganisms. Although microreliefs have variously been noted in fossil cuticles, hypotheses relating to the effectiveness of these structures in fossil plants have not been advanced to date. A surface microrelief composed of longitudinally orientated idiocuticular striae occurs on the leaves of the enigmatic Carnian (Late Triassic) gymnosperm (?ginkgophyte) Glossophyllum florinii Kräusel from the Northern Calcareous Alps of lower Austria. Most striae originate from the tips of the papillae on the stomatal subsidiary cells. The G. florinii surface microrelief may have (1) reduced leaf wettability, (2) produced or enhanced the self‐cleaning effect of the leaf, (3) prevented the formation of a water film on the leaf surface, and/or (4) mechanically stabilized the leaf. © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2007, 153 , 87–95.  相似文献

Nostoc commune is a widespread colonial cyanobacterium living on bare soils that alternate between frost and thaw, drought and inundation and very low and high temperatures. We collected N. commune from alternating wet and dry limestone pavements in Sweden and tested its photosynthesis and respiration at 20°C after exposure to variations in temperature (-269 to 105°C), pH (2-10) and NaCl (0.02-50 g NaCl kg(-1)). We found that dry field samples and rewetted specimens tolerated exposure beyond that experienced in natural environmental conditions: -269 to 70°C, pH 3-10 and 0-20 g NaCl kg(-1), with only a modest reduction of respiration, photosynthesis and active carbon uptake at 20°C. (14)CO(2) uptake from air declined markedly below zero and above 55°C, but remained positive. Specimens maintained a high metabolism with daily exposure to 6 h of rehydration and 18 h of desiccation at -18 and 20°C, but died at 40°C. The field temperature never exceeded the critical 40°C threshold during the wet periods, but it frequently exceeded this temperature during dry periods when N. commune is already dry and unaffected. We conclude that N. commune has an excellent tolerance to low temperatures, long-term desiccation and recurring cycles of desiccation and rewetting. These traits explain why it is the pioneer species in extremely harsh, nutrient-poor and alternating wet and dry environments.  相似文献

The revision of the type collections on the genus Pseudorhaptagnostus Lermontova, 1940 has shown the validity of the type species. Originally indicated type species P. simplex Lermontova, 1951 appeared to be erroneously combination of cephala and pygidia from different species; recombined set of cephala and pygidia for P. simplex synonymized it with P. punctatus Lermontova, 1940, and therefore renamed the type species as the latter one. Also Pseudorhaptagnostus has shown to differ from its close morphological affinities Neoagnostus, Norilagnostus, Machairagnostus, Idolagnostus. New introduction of their morphological difference allowed us to rearrange the species assignment of these genera.  相似文献

A new species, Bembidion (?Nipponobembidion) ruruy sp. n., is described from the foot of Ruruy Volcano, Kunashir Island, Kuril Archipelago, Russia. It is only the second consubgener, being characterized by the reduced wings, the rounded elytral shoulders, and the backward position of the posterior supra-orbital pore. In this connection, the subgenus Nipponobembidion Habu & Baba, 1968 is rediagnosed and both of its species are keyed. It might have originated from Plataphodes Ganglbauer, 1891, possibly in relation to volcanic activities in the region.  相似文献

In this first report on the association of an IL-10 promoter polymorphism with type 2 diabetes mellitus in a North Indian population, the -592A/C SNP (rs1800872) was genotyped by PCR-RFLP and the IL-10 level measured using ELISA. Although no significant difference was observed in the genotypic frequencies (P = 0.657), diabetes patients carried a significantly higher number of A alleles at the -592 position, 25.6% (P < 0.001, odds ratio 0.887, 95% CI 0.670-1.184). Significant correlations were detected in postprandial glucose levels of CC-genotype patients and controls (P = 0.025), age and waist-hip ratio of CA patients and controls (P ≤ 0.001), and fasting glucose (P = 0.045) and low-density lipoprotein (P = 0.049) in all patients and controls. The serum IL-10 level was significantly higher in patients than in controls (P = 0.033). The polymorphism was significantly associated with disease incidence and its biochemical manifestations.  相似文献
