The suspension feeding of Bithynia tentaculata was tested in laboratory experiments. The animals were fed in 1-1 aerated glass beakers, and filtration rates were calculated from changes in cell concentrations during the 6-h experiment. Temperature influenced the filtering rate, with minimum values of 5ml · ind–1 · h–1 at 5° C and maxima of 17.2 ml · ind–1 · h–1 at 18° C. Three food species of different size, motility and cell surface characteristics (Chlamydomonas reinhardii, Chlorella vulgaris and Chlorogonium elongatum) did not affect filtration rates. Suspension feeding increased with increasing food concentrations up to 12 nl · ml–1, above which feeding rate was kept constant by lowering the filtering rates. Even the smallest animals tested (<4 mm body length) were found to be feeding on suspended food at a rate of 2.7 ml · ind–1 · h–1, and increasing rates up to 8.4 ml were found in the 6–7 mm size class. All size classes of Bithynia showed a circannual fluctuation of their filtration rates. The ecological consequences of Bithynia's ability to switch between two feeding modes, grazing and suspension feeding, are discussed.  相似文献

The food, feeding habits and growth of 0+ Alestes nurse (Rüppel) from the Blue Nile near Khartoum, was investigated. 0+ A. nurse were observed to change their food from phytoplankton and small zooplankton during their pre-metamorphosis stages, to larger zooplankton (Daphnia spp., Chydorus sp.) and insects (larvae, pupae and imagines) during their post-metamorphosis stage.Their growth in length and weight was characterized by two distinct stanzas; during the first stanza, the fish increased in total length at a rate of 0.196 mm mm–1 wk–1, and in wet weight at a rate of 0.430 g g–1 wk–1. These rates were reduced during the second stanza to 0.046 mm mm–1 and 0.080 g g–1 wk–1, respectively. The calculated value of the exponent b in their length-weight relationship suggested that their growth was allometric.  相似文献

The characteristics and habitat of the Patagonian toothfish (Dissostichus eleginoides) are typical of fish that accumulate high concentrations of mercury. In this study, mercury determinations were made on samples of muscle tissue from Macquarie Island toothfish and the Southern Ocean deepwater warty squid (Moroteuthis ingens). The analysis of mercury in the biological tissues was made by cold vapour-atomic absorption spectrometry following acid digestion. Performance of the analytical procedure was assessed by analysis of certified reference material (DORM-2, dogfish muscle). Mercury concentrations of 16 Macquarie Island toothfish ranged from 0.12 mg kg–1 (550 g, 381 mm TL) to 0.59 mg kg–1 (6,100 g, 823 mm TL), with a mean concentration of 0.33±0.12 mg kg–1. A significant correlation was found between mercury and either toothfish weight or total length. The fish analysed were juveniles, which suggests that larger individuals would have higher mercury concentrations well exceeding food standard code limits for mercury in fish (typically 0.5 mg kg–1). Warty squid, also from around Macquarie Island, had a low mean mercury concentration of 0.086 mg kg–1 in mantle tissue; no significant correlation existed between mercury concentration and either squid mantle length or total weight. It is postulated that the squid have a mechanism, possibly involving the digestive gland, that prevents bioaccumulation of mercury in the mantle, and presumably other body tissues.  相似文献

Bighead carp, Aristichthys nobilis Rich., dry weight food assimilation rates ranged from 37 to 49% (average 43%). The filtration rate ranged from 185 to 256 ml h–1 g–1 and was higher in larger fish. Bighead carp filtered Chlorella vulgaris (6 ± 0.4 µ diam) inefficiently (0.1 %), but the efficiency increased to 13 % for the larger Scenedesmus sp. (12 ± 1.7 µ diam). Fish kept in cages were forced to filter-feed, whereas fish kept free in the same pond were opportunistic plankton and bottom feeders. Free fish grew faster.  相似文献

The foraging ecology of the Great Crested Grebe wasstudied at Dobczyce Reservoir in southernPoland. The mean diving frequency of grebes withoutyoung was 19.3 h–1, while grebes with young dived onaverage 32.5 h–1. The mean number of apparent prey caughtby grebes without young was 0.5 fish h–1. Birds with young caught a greater number, on average4.5 fish h–1. Probably, birds fishing forthemselves ate much prey underwater. The total lengthof the fish consumed by adult grebes was on average10.0 cm. Adults ate larger fish in the breeding seasonthan in the autumn migration period. Young birds werefed fish about 8.3 cm long. More than 50% of preywere bleak. The mean success of dives of birds withoutyoung was 3.3% and for individuals with young 14.8%.A comparison of the weight of the daily food demandwith the weight of fish brought to the surface showed that it was 70% lower than the dailyfood demand. The poor relation between prey size anddiving success shows that grebes can eat both small andlarge fish below the water surface.  相似文献

In order to calibrate carrying capacity models, investigations were conducted into the effects of food concentration and food quality on the feeding rates of small (25–50 mm), medium (60–85 mm) and large (90–115 mm) Greenshell mussels (Perna canaliculus). Experimental diets varying from 3.3 to 6.0 μg l−1 chlorophyll a concentration and 12–25% organic content were fed to mussels housed in individual flow through chambers. Not surprisingly, this study found that the main factor affecting feeding rates is mussel size. Small mussels were observed to maintain a constant filtration rate of approximately 20 mg h−1 irrespective of food concentration or quality, whereas mussels of greater than 60 mm length had more variable filtration rates between 30 and 80 mg h−1. The filtration rates of these large mussels were also observed to increase positively with organic content, and showed no sign of levelling out, even at the highest organic content tested (25%). Highest rejection rates (50–70 mg h−1) were observed when the organic content of the available seston was low, suggesting that P. canaliculus are able to selectively reject organic material, thereby organically enriching their diet. It appears that the organic content of the seston is the primary determinant of the net efficiency with which food is selected from the available seston by the mussel. The present study shows that P. canaliculus of all sizes are capable of adapting their feeding behaviour to compensate for changes in the food supply, which may occur over relatively short time periods, in the culture environment.  相似文献

Synopsis Laboratory experiments were conducted to examine changes in behavior of red hake,Urophycis chuss, under decreasing concentrations of dissolved oxygen (DO). Since the ecological requirements of this species change with age, responses were measured for three different groups: (1) age 0+, = 89 mm total length (TL); (2) age 1+, = 238 mm TL; and (3) age 2–3+, = 397 mm TL. As DO decreased from 8–10 mg l-1 to < 0.5 mg l-1, changes were evident in active time, water column activity, range of horizontal movement, food searching, and agonistic behavior. Age 0+ fish were most sensitive, moving up into the water column and swimming continuously as DO levels fell below 4.2 mg l-1. Age 2–3+ fish were the least responsive, remaining on the substrate and increasing only their range of movement at concentrations below 3 mg l-1. Responses of age 1 + fish were variable, possibly reflecting a transition stage between the younger and older fish. Common to all groups was the decrease and eventual cessation of food searching.  相似文献

Synopsis The toxicity of zinc to rainbow trout was determined and the 72 h median lethal concentration was found to be 2.00 mg l–1 in freshwater, hardness 7.50 mg l–1 as calcium. An insignificant increase in zinc concentration of internal tissues occurred in fish exposed to 1.52 mg l–1 in freshwater for 72 h. However, there was a significant uptake of zinc by gills and the body surface. Fish exposed to 10 mg l–1 zinc for 72 h in two-thirds sea water showed significant zinc uptake by liver, rectum and muscle, when compared to control fish. Drinking rate decreased from 1.43 to 0.26 ml kg–1 h–1 when zinc sulphate was added to freshwater. Trout adapted to two-thirds sea water showed no decrease in drinking, about 7 ml kg–1 h–1 when zinc was added to the water.  相似文献

We tested age-0 red snapper, Lutjanus campechanus, for sand or shell substrate preference in a circular tank (1.5 m diameter × 0.6 m deep). The test tank was divided into two equal areas of whole oyster shell or sand substrates. All trials were video taped for 20 to 25 min. Tapes were viewed on a monitor and locations of all fish recorded and timed with respect to substrate. Mean ± SE time on shell was 11.6 ± 0.5 sec (4 fish trial–1) and 13.8 ± 1.1 sec (1 fish trial–1). Mean ± SE time on sand was 9.7 ± 0.4 sec (4 fish trial–1) and 8.9 ± 0.5 sec (1 fish trial–1). Fish spent significantly more time on shell compared to sand substrate in four-fish trials (paired t-test, p < 0.10) and also in single-fish trials (paired t-test, p < 0.05). Shell substrate may offer increased food and shelter for age-0 red snapper compared to sand substrate. However, a preference for shell substrate in the natural habitat may occur only during the nursery period, because as fish grow (> 100 mm TL) in the late fall they probably outgrow the shell habitat.  相似文献

Food consumption, growth and the ability to withstand starvation were studied in two species of predominantly piscivorous predatory lionfishes from the Gulf of Aqaba, Red Sea: Dendrochirus brachypterus a small-bodied species, 35–40 g body weight, and Pterois volitans, 1.10–1.20 kg body weight. In experimental conditions, the biomass consumed by D. brachypterus was 0.8–1.1 g day-1 in juveniles of 10–20 g body weight and 3.0–5.0 g day-1 in adults of 35–40 g. P. volitans consumed 5.5–13.5 g day-1 as juveniles, and 14.6 g day-1 when adults of 300–500 g body weight. The growth trajectories of both species are parallel until they attain 20–25 g body weight. From this point on, growth in the maturing D. brachypterus nears asymptotic, while Pterois continue their exponential increase up to 70–80 g body weight. With age, the efficiency of food conversion, indexed by the condition (K) factor, is low (from 0.46 in young fish to 0.22 in adults), as most of their food energy is channeled towards maintenance. In nature, larger Pterois of 300–400 g body weight, consume about 8.5 g day-1, amounting to 3.10 kg yr-1; for 80 fish inhabiting a 1 km long reef, this totals approximately 228.48 kg yr-1. Starvation experiments in these fishes produced a clear correlation between their initial weight and their ability to withstand prolonged fasting: D. brachypterus lost 12–33% body weight within 7 weeks, and the larger Pterois lost only 5–16% within 3 months. I discuss the advantages and disadvantages of early maturation as well as small size versus large size, and delayed maturation in these two closely-related predatory fishes. Experiments with naive adult lionfish showed that their selection of prey species is a learned process, vital to survival during growth in the prey-fishes' rich habitat of coral reefs.  相似文献

Production of larvae by threadfin shad, Dorosoma petenense, and gizzard shad, D. cepedianum, varied over two orders of magnitude and was regulated by adult threadfin shad abundance over five years in Normandy Reservoir, Tennessee. Significantly more larvae of both species were produced in years following winterkills of threadfin shad (repeated-measures ANOVA, df=4, 75; F > 21.44, p=0.0001). Peak geometric mean catch of threadfin shad larvae in neuston samples was inversely related to biomass (kg ha–1; r = – 0.91; p=0.031) and density (no. ha–1; r=– 0.89; p = 0.043) of adult (> 70 mm total length) threadfin shad in mid-summer cove samples. Peak geometric mean catch of gizzard shad larvae was also inversely related to adult threadfin shad biomass (r = – 0.93; p=0.022) and density (r=– 0.88; p=0.046) in cove samples. Winterkills of threadfin shad were size selective, killing all fish under 60 mm total length but allowing some unknown percentage of larger fish to survive. When threadfin shad stocks were reduced by winterkills, surviving threadfin shad and gizzard shad may have taken advantage of less competition for food resources in early spring and increased condition enough to spawn successfully.  相似文献

Ozark cavefish, Amblyopsis rosae, is a threatened species endemic to the Springfield Plateau of the Ozark Highlands in Arkansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma. One of the largest known Ozark cavefish populations, located in Logan Cave, Arkansas, was surveyed 25 times over a two-year period between 1993 and 1995. During the study, 147 Ozark cavefish > 30 mm (TL) were marked with visual implant tags and 140 Ozark cavefish were available for recapture; 68 were recaptured 189 times and the rest (72) were never recaptured. Individual Ozark cavefish persisted in Logan Cave for a relatively short time. Only 14% of 80 fish tagged during a previous study in 1992 were recaptured during this study, and half of all recaptured fish disappeared within three months. However, if a fish persisted for at least seven months in the cave, its probability of being recaptured over an additional year was high. Maximum persistence of a tagged fish was 28 months, suggesting these fish have a maximum life-span of 4–5 years. Growth averaged 0.6 mm per month, with maximum recorded growth of 6 mm per month and a maximum size of 65 mm TL. Smaller fish grew faster than larger fish but growth rates were sporadic, with several mid-sized fish (45–49 mm) showing little growth (0–3 mm year-1) while some fish > 50 mm grew up to 12 mm year-1. Most fish gained in length during April–October, the same period a maternity colony of gray bats occupied the cave. Gross Ozark cavefish movement over the study period ranged up to 1002 m, with a mean movement of 1.2 m day-1; movement was positively correlated with Ozark cavefish total length. Death seemed the most likely explanation for loss of tagged Ozark cavefish, including fish that emigrated out of the cave. Little up-stream movement was recorded between reaches and did not account for loss of tagged fish. Reproduction within the cave and immigration from the aquifer accounted for persistence of Ozark cavefish in Logan Cave.  相似文献

Clearance rates of Limnoperna fortunei (Bivalvia) were investigated in laboratory experiments using monocultures of the alga Chlorella vulgaris. Experimental conditions included two mollusc sizes (15 and 23 mm), and three water temperatures (15, 20 and 25 °C) covering the normal seasonal range in the lower Paraná river and Río de la Plata estuary. Filtration rates obtained were, for the larger mussels: 9.9, 13.1 and 17.7 ml mg tissue dry weight–1 h–1 at 15, 20 and 25 °C, respectively; and for the smaller ones: 17.7, 20.8 and 29.5 ml mg–1 h–1. Differences between sizes and between temperatures (except 15 vs. 20 °C) were statistically significant. In absolute terms larger animals have higher clearance rates, but as a function of body mass smaller individuals feed more actively. Within the range of experimental values used, filtration rates were positively associated with water temperature. These clearance rates (125–350 ml individual–1 h–1) are among the highest reported for suspension feeding bivalves, including the invasive species Dreissena polymorpha, D. bugensis and Corbicula fluminea. High filtration rates, associated with the very high densities of this mollusc in the Paraná watershed (up to over 200,000 ind m–2) suggest that its environmental impact may be swiftly changing ecological conditions in the areas colonized.  相似文献

Synopsis Young fish of six species in an open water community all began their exogenous feeding by taking nauplii and small cyclopoids of body length (less tail) of 0.1–0.3 mm. Appearance of larvae of the different species in the system was, however, sequential, the resource being utilized by the different species in turn. The sequence was: Perca flavescens, Percina caprodes, Pomoxis nigromaculatus, Ambloplites rupestris, Lepomisgibbosus and L. macrochirus. The larvae and juveniles changes their diet rapidly as they grew. Fish 10–14 days after hatching and 8–10 mm in length i.e. close to the beginning of the juvenile period, consumed larger-bodied prey items (including several genera of Cladocera) and had more diversified diets than the 4.5–6.0 mm first-feeding larvae. These differences, and progressive dispersal of the larger young from the area, served to minimize the chances of food competition between batches of young of different ages. The composition of the fish community of larvae changed from week to week as new species entered it, increased in size and departed. Patterns of food utilization changed accordingly.Numbers of cyclopoids, their nauplii, and Bosmina longirostris, fell rapidly in May — early June, and did not increase again until August. These changes coincided with the rise and fall in numbers of the young fish in the habitat.Paper presented in the symposium \lsEmbryonic and larval periods of fishes: present status and significance\rs, Canadian Conference for Fisheries Research (CCFFR), Fredricton, New Brunswick, January 1977.  相似文献

Synopsis The reproductive biology, growth and age composition ofOreochromis mossambicus (Peters) were studied in two Brisbane reservoirs during 1981–1983. The life history was assessed in terms of altricial and precocial tendencies after Noakes & Balon (1982). Fish from both reservoirs had a precocial life history style, showing delayed maturation at 12–15 months, at minimum sizes of 152 mm standard length in males and 174 mm standard length in females. The minimum size of fish at maturity was 0.51–0.73 of maximum size. Mean fecundity was 1360 (± 117.2 standard error) in North Pine Dam and 2107 (220.4 standard error) in Tingalpa Reservoir. This difference was significant (p<0.01). Oöcyte diameter ranged from 1.7–2.6 mm. Overall sex ratio was 1:1 but males predominated amongst fish larger than 200 mm standard length. Stocks consisted mainly of three age groups and the oldest fish caught were 3+ years old. Growth rates were high in both populations. Length-weight relationships conformed to the allometric formula W = aLn and were consistent with data on growth rates. High growth rates are attributed to the high productivity of both reservoirs and the small size of the populations relative to food resources, which are not utilized directly by other fishes. These factors probably also account for the precocial life history style exhibited, compared to the altricial life history style ofO. mossambicus in Lake Sibaya, South Africa, a food-restricted environment.  相似文献

Summary Simultaneous measurements have been made of the efflux rates of tritiated water and radiosodium from the lung-fishProtopterus annectens under conditions in which the fish can either use its gills, its lungs or both for respiration. Tritiated water efflux rate was similar (43–44% h–1) when the fish was in oxygenated water with or without access to air but decreased slightly in deoxygenated water. An efflux rate constant of 44% h–1 obtained in oxygenated water is similar to those of other inactive fish in fresh water. The efflux rate constant for sodium was 0.84% h–1 and total sodium flux was comparable to that of fresh-water fish. The decrease in both tritiated water and sodium efflux rates in deoxygenated water are explained in terms of diversion of blood flow away from the functional gills to the lungs. Oxygen consumption was highest (38.7 ml kg–1 h–1) in deoxygenated water and lowest when the fish was out of water. Despite the reduced functional significance of the gill for respiration, it is still as permeable to water and electrolytes as that of fresh-water teleosts. This work was supported by a travel grant from the Commonwealth Universities Interchange Scheme of the British Council and laboratory facilities of the Department of Biological Sciences, University of Lancaster  相似文献

We estimated the food intake of larval vendace (Coregonus albula L.) directly in an experimental chamber under field conditions. The larvae were stocked into net enclosures and reared without additional feeding for 6 weeks immediately after the ice melted in Lake Ylä-Enonvesi, Eastern Finland. The food intake was estimated on the basis of the decrease in zooplankters due to larval predation in the transparent plastic chambers anchored in the littoral zone. The experiments were carried out twice in 1988 and three times in 1989 (May–June). The numbers of zooplankters inside the chambers were counted from the subsamples using an inverted microscope. The relative daily ingestion rate (mg dry mass of prey animals mg dry mass of fish –1 24 h–1) of the larvae of different sizes was: 1.09 and 0.84 for 9–11 mm larvae, 1.27 for 11–13 mm larvae and 0.34 for 17–20 mm larvae. The measured ingestion rate is presumed to be near the maximum consumption of the larvae. This method could provide accurate estimates of food consumption in the field or in the laboratory.  相似文献

European Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) populations inhabit rivers from northern Portugal to northern Norway across a wide spectrum of environmental variability. To address whether single physical factors might lead to genetic divergence of isolated populations, we compared the digestive performances total digestibility, relative nitrogen digestibility, passage time, and digestion rate (g dry matter · h–1) — of northern (Scotland) and southern (Asturias, northern Spain) populations at three temperature regimes (5, 12, and 20° C). Total dry matter digestibilities increased directly with temperature but were similar for both populations at each of the three trials. Relative nitrogen digestibility did not differ between populations nor among temperature regimes. In contrast, passage time was significantly longer for low-than for high-latitude fish at both 5 and 20° C. When the percentage of food digested and the passage time were integrated as digestion rates (food digested per unit time), a significant population × temperature interaction consistent with a genotype × environment interaction was detected in addition to the population and temperature effects. This implies that not only is the digestive performance of the high-latitude population higher throughout the range of temperatures examined, but moreover the difference is reinforced at high temperatures, where the digestion rate of high-latitude fish was 1.6 times greater. Taken together, these two results provide preliminary evidence for countergradient variation in digestive rates of salmonids in response to variation in growth opportunity. The data support our previous work on the same two populations showing differences in growth rates, and underlie one of the possible mechnisms leading to more rapid growth of the high-latitude fish when both populations are reared in a common environment.  相似文献

The effect of exposure to different concentrations of food and suspended silt on filtration, respiration and condition were studied in the freshwater mussel Hyridella menziesi. Using a milk solids-based food and kaolin to simulate silt, mussels were maintained at different combinations of food and silt concentrations for 3 weeks. Between treatments mean filtration rates ranged from 0.97–1.66 l g–1 h–1, and respiration from 0.50–1.35 mg O2 g–1 h–1. Silt (non-volatile suspended solids up to 35 mg l–1) failed to have a significant effect on filtration rate or condition, but with increasing food levels (volatile suspended solids up to 35 mg l–1) filtration rate was reduced, and condition was reduced at the lowest food concentration (<5 mg l–1). Respiration showed a food × silt interaction between treatment blocks. When food was low respiration increased with increasing silt concentrations, and when silt was low (<5 mg l–1) respiration increased with increasing food concentrations. The observed effects of food and silt on filtration, respiration and condition are discussed in terms of their potential for affecting contaminant bioaccumulation. In low-food situations (i.e., <5 mg l–1), if mussels are pumping large volumes of water, contaminant uptake rates could be enhanced, whereas abundant food would result in lower pumping rates and lower uptake rates. Changes in metabolism with food concentration have implications for contaminant elimination, and changes in biochemical composition associated with changing condition could affect the tissue distribution and retention of contaminants.  相似文献

Synopsis The percentage of Nile perch, Lates niloticus, containing the prawn, Caridina nilotica, declined from 60–85%, for fish between 5 and 40 cm total length, to less than 10% for fish larger than 80 cm in length. The maximum number of prawns eaten by a Nile perch increased steadily, from 10 prawns for a fish in the 5–9.9 cm length group, to 913 prawns in a fish in the 60–69.9 cm length group, and then fell sharply for larger fish. The mean number of Caridina eaten by fish that were foraging on this animal followed a similar trend. Gill raker spacing increased in direct proportion to fish length and this may prevent fish larger than 70 cm in length from being effective prawn predators.  相似文献
