We report here the reappearance of Aedes aegypti in the Rimac district, and summarize the history of this mosquito species in Peru since its first detection in 1852. On March 17 2000 were found Ae. aegypti and Culex quinquefasciatus in Mariscal Castilla town, Flor de Amancaes, San Juan de Amancaes, El Altillo and Santa Rosa in the Rimac district, Lima Province.  相似文献

The objective of this work is to determine the nature, the mode of synthesis, and release of the secretion of accessory glands of the male mosquito, Aedes aegypti (Diptera : Culicidae). Cytological studies revealed that each of the 2 glands has 2 morphological types of regionally specialized secretory cells, each type differing in the nature, and the release of its products. The anterior region (AR) cells secrete small (0.3–1.3 μm) electron-lucent granules, which during the peak period of synthesis seemed to transport the flocculent and fibrous granular substance to the apical cytoplasm of the cell by means of binary fusions. This cytoplasm, when filled with secretory granules, pinches off and falls freely into the lumen of the gland, thus, exhibiting a macroapocrine mode of secretion. The posterior region (PR) cells, however, elaborate large (mean diameter 2 μm) electron-dense granules, which are released into the lumen essentially by rupture of the cell membrane at the apical end. In males mated to depletion, the volume of the gland is reduced by 67%; there is no subsequent recovery of secretory capacity.  相似文献

Differences in biological features of immature and adult Aedes aegypti, as well as variability in vector competence, seem consistent with the existence of genetic variation among subpopulations and adaptation to local conditions. This work aims to compare the bionomics of four Ae. aegypti subpopulations derived from different geographical regions reared under temperate conditions. Life statistics of three Ae. aegypti subpopulations from the provinces of Córdoba, Salta, and Misiones were studied based on horizontal life tables. The Rockefeller strain was used as a control. The development time required to complete the larva and pupa stages varied from 6.91 to 7.95 and 1.87 to 2.41 days, respectively. Significant differences were found in mean larval development time between the Córdoba and Orán subpopulations. The larva‐pupa development time was similar in all the subpopulations. However, survival values varied significantly between the Orán and San Javier subpopulations. The proportion of emergent males did not differ from females within each subpopulation nor among them. Adult longevity was similar among the subpopulations. The average number of eggs laid by each female was significantly different. The Rockefeller strain laid a significantly greater number of eggs (463.99 eggs/female) than the rest of the subpopulations. Moreover, differences in the demographic growth parameter Ro were detected among the four subpopulations. The differences obtained in larval development time, larva‐pupa survival values, and net reproductive rates among the subpopulations might reflect underlying genetic differences as a result of colonization from different regions that probably involve adaptations to local conditions.  相似文献

Traditional mosquito control strategies rely heavily on the use of chemicalinsecticides. However, concerns about the efficiency of traditional control methods, environmental impact and emerging pesticide resistance have highlighted the necessityfor developing innovative tools for mosquito control. Some novel strategies, including release of insects carrying a dominant lethal gene (RIDL®), relyon the sustained release of modified male mosquitoes and therefore benefit from athorough understanding of the biology of the male of the species. In this report wepresent the results of a mark-release-recapture study aimed at: (i) establishing thesurvival in the field of laboratory-reared, wild-type male Aedesaegypti and (b) estimating the size of the local adult Ae.aegypti population. The study took place in Panama, a country whererecent increases in the incidence and severity of dengue cases have prompted healthauthorities to evaluate alternative strategies for vector control. Results suggest alife expectancy of 2.3 days for released male mosquitoes (confidence interval:1.78-2.86). Overall, the male mosquito population was estimated at 58 males/ha (range12-81 males/ha), which can be extrapolated to an average of 0.64 pupae/person for thestudy area. The practical implications of these results are discussed.  相似文献

The population densities of Aedes aegypti Linneaus in four towns in Trinidad were studied using standard house-to-house inspections of all water-holding containers to determine whether persistently positive containers and premises existed over a three-month period in the wet season, from May to July 2002. From a total of 1503 houses inspected, 223 were positive with 41 persistently positive over the three month period and classified as 'key premises'. The definition of the term key premises is described and the rationale for its utilization discussed. A total of 24,439 containers was inspected from Santa Margarita (6407), Mt Lambert (5709), St Augustine (5384) and Curepe (6939) of which 1.3% or 334 containers were positive for A. aegypti larvae and pupae. A total of 16,507 immatures of A. aegypti were retrieved from these containers which comprised 17 container types but when these were ranked according to productivity levels, only water drums (average 53.5%), buckets (22.2%), tubs and basins (8.0%), water tanks (5.4%), brick holes (4.2%) and tyres (2.0%) were significant (P < 0.001) producers. The role that key premises play in the introduction and re-infestation of A. aegypti-free communities is described and illustrated. These results suggest that A. aegypti control programmes could be more cost effective and sustainable by concentrating efforts on key premises and key containers to control mosquito densities and Dengue transmission while reducing manpower needs and insecticide use.  相似文献

Insecticide susceptibility of a 1995 Townsville Aedes aegypti (L.) population was investigated in the laboratory according to World Health Organization guidelines. Using baseline data from two Townsville populations (1955 and 1989), larval bioassays detected significant increases in susceptibility to synthetic pyrethroids and malathion, and significant reductions in susceptibility to most organophosphates and propoxur. Adult bioassays detected significant resistance to bendiocarb and DDT. Comparison of larval data with the international reference ROCK strain showed substantial resistance to have developed to malathion and fenthion. Further analysis revealed the presence of distinct substrains in the baseline 1989 population, which displayed varying levels of temephos susceptibility. We concluded that susceptibility investigations should assess mosquito populations collected from many sites within an area rather than taking a single population from one site, and that the 1989 Ae. aegypti colony would be unsuitable for use as a susceptible reference population.  相似文献

Vitellogenesis in Aedes aegypti of uniform body size was followed at 27 degrees C in narrow time intervals throughout their first reproductive cycle by measuring the length, diameter, and volume of follicles and oocytes, the latter as an expression of the yolk mass (vitellus). Independent of all experimental conditions, a two-step process of elongation was recognized for both follicle length and yolk length, so that growth curves were consistently composed of two linear regressions with different slopes against time. Follicle lengths started to increase immediately after the blood meal, while oocytes took up to 6 h to show a measurable increase in yolk length. The first linear phase continued until 30 h, when yolk length reached 268+/-22 micro m. At this point, a transition occurred where the linearity shifted sharply for the next 6 h to 2-4-times higher slopes for both regressions. This second growth phase represented a 40% elongation of oocytes and follicles. Then, both curves leveled off at their final size, characteristic of mature ovaries: 462+/-10 micro m for oocytes, 489+/-11 micro m for follicles. These values remained constant until oviposition. The first linear growth phase was associated with an equicaloric and synchronous protein and lipid incorporation into the oocytes; levels of these substances reached their maximum by the end of this first phase and remained constant until oviposition. The second linear growth phase was characterized by rapid glycogen incorporation into oocytes from 20 to 100% of the maximum. Subsequently, the surface pattern of the exochorion became visible, marking the end of yolk incorporation. Since eggs are always laid on moist substrates, within 2-3 h of oviposition they double in volume and fresh weight, driven by more than tripling of their water content. When blood-fed females were exposed to five different temperatures between 17 and 37 degrees C, the distinction between the two linear growth phases persisted, but the slopes of the respective regressions, and therefore their durations, were affected. Eggs still matured at 37 degrees C but never hatched and at 12 degrees C only 18% hatched, whereas at all the intermittent temperatures hatching was 80-90%. Oogenesis appears to be limited to the range between 12 and about 32 degrees C.The effects of age, maternal body size and the source of the blood on vitellogenesis were also examined. These parameters affected the onset and/or extent of oogenesis in various ways.  相似文献

Monitoring mosquito populations is essential to designing and implementing control strategies. Recent strategies based on releasing biologically modified mosquitoes have increased the need to effectively monitor mosquito abundance. Unfortunately, existing surveillance traps are of limited value due to their high cost and low capture rates. Here, we report the results of experiments designed to evaluate the effectiveness of an acoustic trap prototype. Stimuli synthesized from recordings of Ae. aegypti wingbeat signals and pure tones were evaluated as attractants to males in indoor and semi‐field conditions. Overall, the acoustic trap´s efficacy differed significantly between indoor and semi‐field conditions. After two hours of indoor recapture, ~69% of males were collected from acoustic traps broadcasting pure tones while ~78% of males were collected using synthesized wingbeat signals. Under semi‐field conditions, however, acoustic traps collected less than ~1.7% of the males released. Increasing the intensity of the signals up to 90 dB (SPL re. 20 uPa at 1 m from the trap) did not improve the capture rate under semi‐field conditions. Overall, our results indicate that acoustic signals synthesized from recordings of wingbeats can be used to enhance capture of male Ae. aegypti.  相似文献

A sticky trap designed to capture gravid Aedes (Stegomyia) aegypti mosquitoes, MosquiTRAP, has been evaluated for monitoring this species in Brazil. However, the effects of trap densities on the capture rate of Ae. aegypti females and the sensitivity of vector detection are still unknown. After a preliminary study has identified areas of high and low female mosquito abundance, a set of experiments was conducted in four neighbourhoods of Belo Horizonte (state of Minas Gerais, Brazil) using densities of 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32 and 64 traps per block. Trap sensitivity (positive MosquiTRAP index) increased significantly when 1-8 MosquiTRAPs were installed per block in both high and low abundance areas. A strong fit was obtained for the total number of mosquitoes captured with increasing trap densities through a non-linear function (Box-Lucas) (r2 = 0,994), which likely exhibits saturation towards an equilibrium level. The capacity of the Mean Female Aedes Index to distinguish between areas of high and low Ae. aegypti abundance was also investigated; the achieved differentiation was shown to be dependent on the MosquiTRAP density.  相似文献

The toxicity of 11 oils extracted from plants commonly grown in the Himalayan region was studied using larvae of two Aedes aegypti (L.) strains. A strain from Liverpool, England, was highly susceptible to these oils. The LC50 values were much higher in a local laboratory strain. Daucus carota L. oil was highly toxic in both strains. Differences in the susceptibility of these strains to the action of the test oils and their potential use in integrated pest management are discussed.  相似文献

Thirty‐two Aedes aegypti populations collected throughout Thailand and five populations of Aedes albopictus from southern Thailand were subjected to standard WHO contact bioassays to assess susceptibility to three commonly used synthetic pyrethroids: permethrin, deltamethrin, and lambda‐cyhalothrin. A wide degree of physiological response to permethrin was detected in Ae. aegypti, ranging from 56.5% survival (Lampang, northern Thailand) to only 4% (Kalasin in northeastern and Phuket in southern Thailand). All 32 populations of Ae. aegypti were found to have evidence of incipient resistance (62.5%) or levels of survival deemed resistant (37.5%) to permethrin. Four populations of Ae. albopictus were found with incipient resistance (97 – 80% mortality) and one with resistance (< 80%) to permethrin. The majority of Ae. aegypti populations (68.7%) was susceptible (> 98% mortality) to deltamethrin, with incipient resistance (observed 97–82% mortality) in other localities. In contrast, all populations of Ae. aegypti were completely susceptible (100% mortality) to the recommended operational dosage of lambda‐cyhalothrin. All five populations of Ae. albopictus were found completely susceptible to both deltamethrin and lambda‐cyhalothrin. Evidence of defined incipient or resistance to synthetic pyrethroids mandates appropriate response and countermeasures to mitigate further development and spread of resistance. In light of these findings, we conclude that routine and comprehensive susceptibility monitoring of dengue mosquito vectors to synthetic pyrethroids should be a required component of resistance management policies and disease control activities.  相似文献

There is a broad understanding of the influence of environmental factors on various aspects of normal mosquito behavior. How these external factors influence responses to repellent compounds is far less clear. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of different daytime periods combining the normal circadian activity of a laboratory colony of Aedes aegypti (L.) with behavioral responses of mosquitoes exposed to three different compounds possessing repellent properties. Using an excito-repellency test chamber with different test designs (contact irritancy + repellency and noncontact repellency), female mosquitoes were exposed to each chemical or matching blank control during four different 3-h time intervals beginning 0600 to 1800?h. Mosquitoes showed more significant avoidance responses (escape movement away from the chemical) when exposed to either DEET or hairy basil during the afternoon periods. With deltamethrin, there was no significant difference in repellent escape movement during any period of testing. Escape activity with deltamethrin was significantly greater during all diurnal periods in contact tests compared to DEET and hairy basil. From this study, it was shown that time of diurnal testing can significantly influence behavioral responses of Ae. aegypti exposed to chemical-based repellents. Therefore, the assessment of chemicals (toxins, repellents, attractants) and must carefully consider time-of-test as a potential confounding factor during evaluation and comparisons.  相似文献

The brain and subesophageal ganglion of male Aedes aegypti (L.) (Diptera : Culicidae) are described from cryofractures and silver-stained, semithin (0.5 μm) serial sections of whole heads observed in the scanning and light microscopes. The brain and subesophageal ganglion of male A. aegypti are fused. The major structures of the brain include the protocerebral lobes and bridge, the mushroom bodies, central complex of the protocerebrum, the mechanosensory regions and olfactory loves of the deutocerebrum, and the tritocerebrum. Major commissures of the brain are the anterior optic tract, central commissure, posterior dorsal commissure, and subesophageal commissure. The structural associations of brain components with each other and the subesophageal ganglion, as well as the paths of the major nerve tracts in male A. aegypti are described and compared with those in other Diptera.  相似文献

The development of eggs resulting from compatible and incompatible crosses of Aedes polynesiensis strains was studied. No difference was seen between newly laid compatible and incompatible eggs. Very little development occurs in most of the incompatible eggs; the eggs that develop mature but often produce abnormal embryos. Embryos developed in as many as 10% of the incompatible eggs and these developed into both males and females, which indicates that the surviving embryos were not parthenogenetic. In eggs infected with Wolbachia, the pole cells are infected at the time of formation and provide infection for the germ cells which develop later. Embryos that survive the incompatibility reaction and hatch from the egg develop normally.  相似文献

The chemical characterization of the hydrocarbon fraction of the epicuticular lipids of the vector mosquito Aedes aegypti (Linnaeus) was performed using gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography-electron impact mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Seventy eight compounds were detected in purified hexane extracts and of these, 42 hydrocarbons were identified and several of the remaining compounds were partially characterized. The hydrocarbon classes present were n-alkanes, monomethylalkanes, dimethylalkanes and alkenes and the results were similar to those published for other Aedes species. Quantitative comparisons of cuticular hydrocarbon profiles were made between males and females, different age groups and between a standard laboratory strain and a recently colonized strain of A. aegypti. These results provide baseline data for further studies on the possible role of mosquito cuticular hydrocarbons in the modification of mating behaviour.  相似文献

In light of the challenges to control Aedes aegypti and the critical role that it plays as arbovirus vector, it is imperative to adopt strategies that provide fast, efficient and environmentally safe control of the insect population. In the present study, we synthesized six indole derivatives (C1‐C6) and examined their larvicidal activity and persistence against Ae. aegypti larvae, as well as their toxicity towards Raw 264.7 macrophages, Vero cells, Chlorella vulgaris BR017, Scenedesmus obliquus BR003, Caenorhabditis elegans N2 and Galleria mellonella. Among the bioactive compounds (C1, C2, C4 and C5), C2 exerted the strongest larvicidal activity against Ae. aegypti, with LC50 = 1.5 μg/ml (5.88 µM) and LC90 = 2.4 μg/ml (9.50 µM), indicating that the presence of chlorine or bromine groups in the aromatic ring improved the larvicidal activity of the indole derivatives. C1, C2, C4 and C5 did not reduce viability of RAW 264.7 macrophages, Vero cells, C. elegans N2 and G. mellonella. Compounds C1, C2 and C5 did not affect the growth of C. vulgaris BR017 and S. obliquus BR003. Analysis of larvicidal persistence under laboratory conditions revealed that the effect of compounds C1, C2, C4 and C5 lasted for 30 days and caused 100% of larvae mortality within few hours. Altogether, our findings demonstrate that the indole derivatives C1, C2, C4 and C5 effectively control Ae. aegypti larvae population, without clear signs of toxicity to mammalian cells, algae, C. elegans and G. mellonella.  相似文献
