Concentrations of the nuclear-polyhedrous virus (T. ni NPV) and the granulosis virus (T. ni GV) of the cabbage looper, Trichoplusia ni, in soil and on foliage were monitored up to 4 years after treatment.A single application of T. ni NPV to soil in August or 5 foliar applications of the virus at 10-day intervals in August and early September maintained substantial concentrations of the virus on foliage and high concentrations of the virus accumulated in soil. With development of natural epizootics of the virus disease in populations of the host larvae in September and October, substantial concentrations of the virus accumulated in soil and on foliage in nontreated plots, eventually becoming equal in amount with the virus in virus-treated plots. The virus accumulated more slowly in plots treated with chemical insecticides or Bacillus thuringiensis because few host larvae survived to support late-season epizootics of the disease. Small quantities of T. ni NPV were detected in heads of cabbage harvested from the plots in October.Long-term studies in which nontreated plots and plots treated with T. ni NPV or T. ni GV were replanted for up to 4 years after treatment showed that concentrations of T. ni NPV in surface soil remained constant during the winter but were reduced by dilution during cultivation preparatory to planting in the spring. T. ni NPV accumulated during the late summer and autumn with development of epizootics of the disease in populations of host larvae. Increased concentrations of the virus in soil coincided with increased concentrations on leaves in each year. T. ni GV did not persist on leaves or in soil following application and only small amounts were found 2 years after application.T. ni NPV disease was prevalent in September and October in populations of host larvae in plots in which substantial residues of the virus were found. These epizootics contributed substantially to late-season control of the looper after completion of spraying.  相似文献

The granulosis virus of Pieris rapae, the imported cabbageworm (P. rapae GV), persisted in soil after application. Virus produced by epizootics of the disease in populations of the host accumulated in soil in nontreated plots with concentrations of the virus in soil and on foliage, being similar at harvest to concentrations in virus-treated plots. Also P. rapae GV produced in epizootics of the disease increased concentrations in soil of virus-treated plots and maintained substantial residues of the virus on the foliage. Little virus accumulated in plots treated with some chemical insecticides and Bacillus thuringiensis because few host larvae survived to support late-season epizootics. Small quantities of P. rapae GV were found in heads of cabbage harvested from plots in October, but these residues were not related to plot treatment.A study in which nontreated and virus-treated plots were replanted for 2 years after treatment indicated an increase in concentrations of P. rapae GV in surface soil in years following treatment. Concentrations of P. rapae GV in soil in virus-treated and nontreated plots were similar in the autumn of the year of treatment and in subsequent years of the study. Concentrations were nearly unchanged during the winter, were reduced by cultivation preparatory to planting in the spring, and increased with epizootics of the disease in host populations in summer and autumn.P. rapae GV disease was prevalent during September and October in populations of P. rapae larvae in plots in which substantial concentrations of the virus were found and contributed to late-season control of the pest insect.  相似文献

The number of Aphis fabae Scop. per plant and per acre developing on field beans (Vicia faba L.) was inversely related to seeding rate (i.e. plant density) except sometimes at very low rates; with equal numbers of plants per acre, fewer aphids developed on plants in rows 11 in. than 22 in. apart. Plots sown in mid-March with more than about 150,000 plants per acre were more attractive than less dense stands to colonizing alate A. fabae, but established colonies multiplied most on the sparsest and least on the densest plots. The number of plants per acre infected by pea leaf-roll virus was inversely related to planting density. There were more virus-infected plants on II in. than on 22 in. spaced rows-in contrast to the numbers of A. fabae. A single spray with demeton-methyl, timed to control A. fabae, did not significantly decrease virus incidence. Grain yields of sprayed plots were little altered by increasing the seed rate above a critical minimum, except in one year when the densest crops lodged. Increased yields from spraying were closely related to the numbers of A. fabae on unsprayed plots. Dense planting (more than 400,000 plants per acre) prevented or greatly decreased losses caused by A. fabae in unsprayed plots except in one year when the aphids were exceptionally abundant.  相似文献

An experiment was conducted to determine population changes and niche variation in the soil at two depths (0 to 20 cm and 20 to 40 cm) of Paratrichodorus minor and Belonolaimus longicaudatus populations following fumigation. Eight plots each of potato (Solanum tuberosum) and cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata), fumigated with 1, 3-dichloropropene or nonfumigated, were established. Eight plots of sorghum-sudangrass hybrid (Sorghum bicolor × S. arundinaceum var. sudanense) were also used to monitor depth distribution (0 to 20 cm and 20 to 40 cm) of B. longicaudatus and P. minor following each cabbage/potato season. Soil samples were taken 0 to 20 cm and 20 to 40 cm deep during the potato/cabbage, and sorghum-sudangrass growing seasons. During the 1993-94 and 1994-95 potato/cabbage seasons, P. minor was found at highest numbers at 20 to 40 cm, whereas numbers of B. longicaudatus were highest at 0 to 20 cm. During the 1994 and 1995 sorghum-sudangrass growing seasons, B. longicaudatus numbers were highest at 0 to 20 cm. Paratrichodorus minor numbers were highest at 0 to 20 cm and at 20 to 40 cm deep in the 1994 and 1995 sorghum-sudangrass growing seasons, respectively. Reduction by soil fumigation of B. longicaudatus at 0 to 20 cm deep did not affect depth distribution or cause P. minor populations to increase in potato or cabbage plots. Paratrichodorus minor numbers increased at 20 to 40 cm deep in the 1994-95 cabbage season after soil fumigation.  相似文献

An experiment was made on the fourth, fifth and sixth successive crops of winter wheat to determine the effects of various treatments on the troubles which result from close cereal cropping. Eyespot and lodging were prevalent in the first year (1946); weeds in the second; eyespot, lodging, take-all and weeds in the third.
Spraying with H2SO4 reduced the incidence of eyespot, lodging and weeds, and increased yield of grain on plots which received sulphate of ammonia (by 2.7, 2.2 and 10.0 cwt./acre in successive years).
Sulphate of ammonia increased the incidence at harvest of eyespot and lodging, reduced take-all and consistently increased yield of straw. Eyespot and lodging reduced the effect of the fertilizer on yield of grain, take-all increased it.
Increase in seed rate increased the incidence of severe eyespot and of take-all; it increased lodging except when plants were dwarfed by take-all.
Weight of straw and percentage straws with severe eyespot lesions independently affected lodging, together accounting for 51% of the variance in percentage area lodged at harvest and 64 % of that lodged 33 days earlier.
Mean yields of grain on untreated plots sown with 3.3 1/2 bushels seed/acre fell from 26.0 to 22.5 to 11.7 cwt./acre in successive years, whereas yields of 28.4, 29.9 and 29.1 cwt./acre were obtained on sprayed plots sown with 1 1/2.2 bushels seed/acre which received 4 cwt./acre sulphate of ammonia, showing that high yields were maintained when eyespot, lodging, take-all and weeds were controlled.
By 1948 yields of grain on unsprayed plots had fallen to the level of those on similarly manured plots on the continuous wheat experiment on Broadbalk field. Spraying increased grain by amounts similar to those resulting from one year's fallow on Broadbalk; but fallow had its greatest effects on plots with low nitrogen, spraying on those with high nitrogen.  相似文献

Summary The population fluctuations and within-generation survival of immatures stages of the diamondback moth,Plutella xylostella on summer cabbages, were examined in unsprayed plots in 1984 and 1985 and in plots sprayed with two formulations ofBacillus thuringiensis in 1985. There was two distincy generations per crop and no noticeable difference in population fluctuations were observed in unsprayed plots between years. There was distinct difference between unsprayed and sprayed plots in 1985, from the larval period onwards. However, the survivorship patterns in all plots in both years were a Type 2 based onDeevey's (1947) classification. Life table studies showed that there was essentially no difference in the mortality agents acting on each of the stages except for numerical differences in the within-generation mortality rates. The major mortality rates during the egg stage were the parasitoid,Trichogramma spp. and unknown factors including rainfall; in the larval 1 stage was unknown mortality; in the larval 2 stage was the parasitoid,Apanteles plutellae and during the pupal stage was unknown mortality and parasitoid,Diadromus subtilicornis. Adult mortality was determined for generation 2. It was relatively higher in the unsprayed plots compared to theB. thuringiensis sprayed plots. The contribution of abiotic factors such as rainfall and temperature, and biotic factors such as parasitoids and predators in determining within-generation population levels and the fluctuation of populations on cabbage were discussed.  相似文献

The organophosphorus insecticides Bayer 38156 (O-ethyl S-p-tolyl ethyl phosphonodithioate), trichloronate, Stauffer N 2790 (O-ethyl S-phenyl ethyl phosphonodithioate), thionazin and fenitrothion were compared with aldrin, dieldrin and γ-BHC for their effects on soil fauna, particularly wire-worms, and on crop yields in 1964 and 1965. At 1·5 lb active ingredient/acre, none of the organophosphates had as great an effect on wireworms as an aldrin spray at 2·25 lb a.i./acre or a dieldrin seed dressing at 2·25 lb a.i./acre. Some treatments significantly increased and some significantly decreased numbers of mites and Collembola. Except for Allolobophora chlorotica in plots treated with Bayer 38156, earthworm numbers were greater in plots sprayed with Bayer 38156 or aldrin, or sown with dieldrin-dressed seeds, than in untreated plots. In May 1964, one month after sowing, untreated plots had significantly fewer plants than plots sprayed with aldrin, trichloronate or Bayer 38156, or sown with γ-BHC or dieldrin-dressed seeds, but yields from untreated plots at harvest were high for such a large wireworm population and did not differ significantly from yields of treated plots in either year. The persistence of thionazin and Bayer 38156 in treated plots was measured by a bioassay using Collembola. Bayer 38156 was detected in plots 1 month after spraying but not after 6 months. Thionazin left detectable residues 1 month after spraying in the two acid plots but not in the two alkaline plots. More frequent samples taken from thionazin-treated plots in 1965 showed a similar pattern of persistence, and laboratory tests, using soil mixed with various amounts of powdered calcium carbonate, confirmed that thionazin persisted longer in more acid soils.  相似文献

The population dynamics of Melaleuca quinquenervia were monitored over a 5-year period in a cypress-pine wetland while subjected to two levels of herbivory. The trees had been recruited during 1998–1999 after a destructive crown fire. Half of 26 experimental plots were sprayed every 4–6 weeks with an insecticide to reduce herbivory by the biological control agents Oxyops vitiosa and Boreioglycaspis melaleucae. After only 1-year melaleuca density increased by 26% in sprayed plots and by 7% in unsprayed plots. However, over the entire 5-year period melaleuca density increased in sprayed plots by 0.1% while decreasing by 47.9% in unsprayed plots when compared to initial densities. Annual mortality of melaleuca never exceeded 6% in any year in sprayed plots but ranged from 11% to 25% in unsprayed plots. There was a significant year by treatment interaction indicating the importance of the environment on tree mortality. Limited seed production occurred on sprayed trees but never on unsprayed trees. Mean tree height increased by 19.6% in sprayed plots while declining by 30.6% in unsprayed plots. Coverage by native vegetation did not increase with decreasing melaleuca density. This is the first study with controls that quantifies the population level regulation of melaleuca by introduced biological control agents and corroborates other correlative studies that documented significant changes in melaleuca communities after the introduction and establishment of biological control agents.  相似文献

In a study of microbial control of grasshoppers, Nosema locustae was applied to 10-acre plots in 2 replications of 24 treatment combinations in which the factors were (1) times of applications: 4 applications spaced over 22 days; (2) concentrations of spores: 1, 30, and 900 spores/in2; and (3) levels of the spore carrier: 1 and 4 lb wheat bran/acre. The concentrations of spores had the most effect in reducing the densities of grasshoppers and the incidence of infection among the survivors at the last sampling (coincided with the initiation of oviposition), the average reduction in density attributed to application of 1 spore/in2 was 21%, that attributed to 30 spores/in2 was 46%, and that attributed to 900 spores/in2 was 73%. The first and second applications caused the greatest reductions in density; the second, third, and fourth applications produced the highest incidence of infections. Also, a higher incidence of infection was observed among grasshoppers from plots treated with 30 spores/in2 on 1 lb bran/acre than from plots treated with 30 spores/in2 on 4 lb of bran/acre. Therefore, a ratio of about 0.63–0.94 billion spores/lb bran applied at a rate of 1–1.5 lb/acre (= 100–150 spores/in2) at the time when the principal early summer species are third-instar nymphs would have resulted in overall reductions in density of 50–60%, with 35–50% of the survivors sufficiently infected so that fecundity would probably be affected. The reductions and incidence of infections would be higher in species that readily accept and use wheat bran, among which are some of the more economically important species of grasshoppers.  相似文献

Trials are described in which the relationships between plant density, rosette disease incidence and the yield and quality of groundnuts were investigated on sprayed and unsprayed groundnut plants. During growth, the number and percentage of sprayed and unsprayed plants showing symptoms of rosette disease was significantly greater at low plant populations than at high. At harvest, in general on unsprayed plots the numbers attacked were also greater at low plant populations, but on the sprayed plots the results were inconsistent. The percentage attack at harvest was much lower on sprayed plots at all plant populations. Menazon used as a seed dressing did not affect the incidence of the disease but used as a spray it significantly reduced the amount of disease found. The spray was applied at a rate of 294 g a.i./ha, four times at 10-day intervals, the first spray being applied 10 days from germination. Spraying controlled secondary spread of the virus within the crop and appeared to reduce the severity of early attack. There was a marked improvement of yields and quality of nuts from sprayed plots. Plant density did not affect quality of the groundnuts obtained, but yields per ha were highest on both sprayed and unsprayed plots at the highest plant densities (seed rate up to 134 kg/ha).  相似文献

Bean pod mottle virus (BPMV) is a management concern for soybean, Glycine max (L.), producers in the North Central states because it can cause yield loss and reduce seed quality by induction of seed coat mottling. The main vector of BPMV is the bean leaf beetle, Cerotoma trifurcata (Forster). An experiment was conducted in 2000 and 2001 at two locations in northwestern and central Iowa to test three insecticide treatments for suppression of bean leaf beetles, and subsequently, BPMV. Treatments of insecticide applications with lambda-cyhalothrin were 1) a single early-season application (23 g [AI] /ha) (2.5 oz/acre) at the VE-VC soybean developmental stage; 2) two early-season applications, the first the same as treatment 1 and a second at the same rate 9-13 d later; 3) a single early-season application the same as treatment 1, followed by a mid-season application (28 g [AI] /ha (3.2 oz/acre) at approximately R2 (flowering, near 15 July); and 4) an unsprayed control. Application of lambda-cyhalothrin after soybean emergence and again as first-generation bean leaf beetles emerged in northwestern Iowa in 2000 (treatment 3) significantly reduced beetle densities through mid-season, BPMV field incidence by 31.5%, and seed coat mottling by 31.2%, compared with the unsprayed control. Similar effects were measured at the same location when insecticide was applied twice at early season (treatment 2). Yield was 453.7 kg/ha (6.74 bu/acre) greater in treatment 2 and 525.20 kg/ha (7.80 bu/acre) greater in treatment 3 than in the unsprayed control at the northwestern site in 2000. At both locations in 2001 fewer treatment effects were observed, which was likely related to lower beetle populations in that year. Early-season insecticide sprays targeted at overwintered beetles on VC-VE reduced the initial population of vector insects and may have contributed to a lower first-generation population because of reduced overwintered beetle oviposition. In 1 year at one location there was a benefit to an additional mid-season insecticide spray, although effectiveness of spraying at this time could vary based on the magnitude of the vector population.  相似文献

The Chinese tallow tree (Sapium sebiferum Roxb.) is a rapid-growing species that has become naturalized along the Gulf and southern Atlantic coasts. The tree is particularly well adapted to poorly-drained and saline soils. Chinese tallow seedlings planted at 2’×2’ spacing produced over 5 dry tons of biomass/acre at the end of the second growing season while the biomass accumulation on coppiced plots was more than 7 dry tons /acre at the end of the second year. The Chinese tallow tree has considerable promise as a woody biomass species in the southern coastal regions of the United States.  相似文献

Sprays of demeton-methyl insecticide decreased the spread of yellowing viruses by aphids in sugar-beet crops in England. Between 1957 and 1960, when yellows was prevalent, the incidence, assessed as ‘infected-plant-weeks’, was decreased by 36–41 % by one spray, depending on when it was applied, and by 55 % by two sprays, giving average yield increases of 1½ and 2 ton/acre of roots respectively. Between 1962 and 1966, when yellows spread less, a spray at the time when growers were advised to spray by the British Sugar Corporation decreased yellows incidence by 37 %, whereas sprays 2 weeks earlier or later decreased it by 24 % and 25 % respectively. Between 1958 and 1966 an annual average of 160000 of the country's 440000 acres of sugar beet has been sprayed, often to control Aphis fabae as well as to check the spread of yellows. A spray gives a profitable yield increase when yellows incidence in unsprayed plots is 20 % at the end of August.  相似文献

Summary The composition of the leachate from undisturbed monolith lysimeters cropped with white clover or meadow fescue or maintained bare was compared with that of the rain falling on them. No nitrogen fertilizer was applied only an initial dressing of phosphorus and potassium. The grass received much more nitrogen from the rain than it lost by leaching whereas the clover lost more than it received. Most of the leached nitrogen was NO3-N - 92 per cent on the bare soil and 90 per cent on the clover. About 27lb nitrogen per acre (30 kg/ha) per year was drained from the actively growing clover sward rising to about 117lb N/acre/year (131 kg/ha) when the clover died or was removed. Only 2.3lb/ac (2.5 kg/ha) was drained from the actively growing grass sward. It was estimated that the clover fixed at least 270lb N/ac/year (303 kg/ha/year. The rates of leaching of potassium from a grass sward was about 1.7lb/ac/year (1.9 kg/ha) and 0.8 lb (0.9 kg) phosphorus. The quantities were similar for clover. The grass received from the rain more phosphorus and potassium than was leached but only 60 per cent of the calcium and 13 per cent of the magnesium, similar results being obtained with white clover. During the year of establishment of the grass sward there was evidence of loss of gaseous nitrogen (elemental and/or compound) from the soil: subsequently the nitrogen content of the soil slowly increased. Calcium loss from the bare soil with an average rainfall of 26″ (650 mm) was about 100 lb Ca/ac/year (112 kg/ha).  相似文献

The afforestation of abandoned farmland significantly influences soil organic carbon (OC). However, the dynamics between OC inputs after afforestation and the original OC are not well understood. To learn more about soil OC dynamics after afforestation of farmland, we measured the soil OC content in paired forest and farmland plots in Shaanxi Province, China. The forest plots had been established on farmland 18, 24, 48, 100, and 200 yr previously. The natural (13)C abundance of soil organic matter was also analyzed to distinguish between crop- and forest-derived C in the afforested soils. We observed a nonlinear accumulation of total OC in the 0-80 cm depth of the mineral soil across time. Total soil OC accumulated more rapidly under forest stands aged 18 to 48 yr than under forest stands aged 100 or 200 yrs. The rate of OC accumulation was also greater in the 0-10 cm depth than in the 10-80 cm depth. Forest-derived OC in afforested soils also accumulated nonlinearly across time, with the greatest increase in the 0-20 cm depth. Forest-derived OC in afforest soils accounted for 52-86% of the total OC in the 0-10 cm depth, 36-61% of the total OC in the 10-20 cm depth, and 11-50% of the total OC in the 20-80 cm depth. Crop-derived OC concentrations in the 0-20 cm depth decreased slightly after afforestation, but there was no change in crop-derived OC concentrations in the 20-80 cm depth. The results of our study support the claim that afforestation of farmland can sequester atmospheric CO(2) by increasing soil OC stocks. Changes in the OC stocks of mineral soils after afforestation appear to be influenced mainly by the input of forest-derived C rather than by the loss of original OC.  相似文献

Young cabbage plants (Brassica oleracea L. var. capitata) that were exposed to an atmosphere at 50% relative humidity transpired freely and accumulated significant quantities of 45Ca in the leaves. Plants that were enclosed by plastic bags to stop transpiration from all leaves exhibited guttation with the development of root pressure and also accumulated significant quantities of 45Ca in the leaves. 45Ca accumulation increased in the leaves and tended to decrease in roots and stems with increasing quantities of water transpired or guttated by the plant. When plants were only partially enclosed so that some leaves were covered and the remainder exposed, only the exposed leaves that were transpiring accumulated significant quantities of 45Ca. The covered leaves of partially enclosed plants exhibited no guttation and accumulated little 45Ca with no measurable 45Ca at the margins of the leaves. The results demonstrate that root pressure flow is required to transport adequate amounts of Ca to those tissues in plants that are not undergoing transpirational water loss.  相似文献

The development and adoption of transgenic (Bt) crops that express the Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) toxin has reduced the use of synthetic insecticide on transgenic crops to target Helicoverpa spp., the major insect pest of cotton in Australia. However, it has also increased the threat posed by sucking pests, particularly Creontiades dilutus (green mirid), which are unaffected by the Bt toxins in transgenic cotton crops. Here we report the efficacy of the entomopathogenic fungus Aspergillus sp. (BC 639) in controlling the infestation of transgenic cotton crops by C. dilutus and promoting interactions of transgenic cotton with beneficial insects. The results showed that the number of C. dilutus adults and nymphs recorded on plots treated with 1000, 750, 500, 250 ml/ha BC 639 fungus formulation were the same as on plots treated with the recommended concentration of the commercial insecticide Fipronil. The fungus was found to have minimal effect on predatory insects compared with Fipronil and was most effective against C. dilutus when applied at the rate of 500 ml/ha (equivalent to 50 g spores/ha). At this rate, the fungus was as effective as Fipronil for controlling C. dilutus populations and ensured the survival of predatory beetles, lacewings and spiders compared with Fipronil treatment. The yield from fungus-treated plots was 5.24 bales per acre compared with 5.40 and 3.88 bales per acre for Fipronil-treated and unsprayed plots, respectively. The ability of the BC 639 strain to control C. dilutus infestations of transgenic cotton crops while conserving beneficial insect populations suggests its potential for supplementing integrated pest management programs to reduce the use of synthetic insecticides for transgenic cropping systems.  相似文献

Multiple crop experiment of hyperaccumulator Solanum nigrum L. with low accumulation Chinese cabbage Fenyuanxin 3 were conducted in a cadmium (Cd) contaminated vegetable field. In the first round, the average removal rate of S. nigrum to Cd was about 10% without assisted phytoextraction reagent addition for the top soil (0–20 cm) with Cd concentration at 0.53–0.97 mg kg?1 after its grew 90 days. As for assisted phytoextraction reagent added plots, efficiency of Cd remediation might reach at 20%. However, in the second round, Cd concentration in Chinese cabbage was edible, even in the plots with assisted phytoextraction reagent added. Thus, multiple cropping hyperaccumulator with low accumulation crop could normally remediate contaminated soil and produce crop (obtain economic benefit) in one year, which may be one practical pathway of phytoremediating heavy metal contaminated soil in the future.  相似文献

A replicated trial was done to find whether the insecticides Thimet and Rogor applied in the soil affected the spread of aphid-transmitted viruses from infected to healthy plants with potato crops. The insecticides were applied at planting as activated carbon formulations at rates equal in cost to three sprays with DDT emulsion at 2 lb. DDT per acre. The infected plants were removed (rogued) in late June.
Thimet applied along the furrows with the fertilizer, and Rogor applied in individual doses beneath each tuber, kept the plants free from aphids from a week after the plants emerged until early August. Thimet in individual doses was less effective but greatly decreased the aphid infestation. All treatments prevented or greatly decreased the spread of leaf-roll virus, but they only slightly decreased the spread of virus Y. No treatment damaged the plants or depressed yields significantly.
Tubers harvested from the plots treated with insecticides contained only very small quantities of the insecticides, but shoots from them, when infested with adult Myzus persicae (Sulz.), carried fewer aphids a week after infestation than did shoots from control tubers. Shoots of tubers from treated plots also grew more slowly than those from the controls.
The aphicidal efficiency of Thimet applied as individual doses separated from the tubers by distances of up to 6 in., decreased as the distance increased, but the effect of distance became less as time passed.
Reasons for the differences in the behaviour of the insecticides are discussed, and the possibilities that the method offers to control virus diseases. The application of insecticides to soil promises to be a useful way of controlling the spread of viruses, provided the harvested crop is free from toxic residues.  相似文献

Granular formulations of menazon, phorate and thionazin were applied to a sandy loam soil (pH = 6·1)in April and May as in-row treatments at commercial rates. They were also broadcast and mixed into the top 4 in of soil at concentrations (10 and 250 ppm of dry soil) which simulated the local in-row concentrations in areas large enough for sampling. Bioassays showed that 50 % of phorate, thionazin and menazon equivalents had disappeared in about 68, 57 and 23 days respectively from soil treated with 10 ppm of the insecticides. Small residues of the 250 ppm treatments still remained 2 years later. The initial rate of loss of activity of thionazin applied at 250 ppm was much slower than from a 10 ppm application whereas the activities of 250 and 10 ppm of menazon disappeared at similar rates. Phorate at 250 ppm killed almost all earthworms, Collembola, Acarina, free-living saprophytic and parasitic nematodes and Protozoa; 10 ppm phorate and 250 ppm of menazon also killed almost all Collembola and Acarina but the menazon was relatively harmless to earthworms. Collembola and mite populations began to increase when residues of phorate and menazon equivalents had decreased to about 2 and 20 ppm respectively, and after 15 months they were similar to those in untreated plots. The broadcast treatments initially decreased the rate of breakdown of leaf discs put in the soil but, after about 4 weeks, breakdown increased, sometimes above that in untreated plots. This was associated with a large increase in numbers of Enchytraeidae which were apparently unaffected by the insecticides. Four months after application, 1 lb/acre of phorate and 2 lb of menazon applied in seed drills 2 ft apart were not affecting Collembola in soil between the rows but were still decreasing the numbers within them. In -row phorate distributed along a 1·5 in diameter band of soil, 3 in deep, killed Collembola 3 in on either side but not 6 in away. It did not spread upwards in toxic quantities, but after rainfall, sufficient to kill Collembola leached at least 3 in downwards. We conclude that commercial in-row applications of chemicals like phorate are most unlikely to harm soil fertility, especially as the leaf-litter-destroying function of Collembola and other animals killed by phorate may be taken over by Enchytraeidae.  相似文献
