The nauplius stages of the cirripede Tetraclita squamosa rufotincta Pilsbry from Elat have been cultured and described. There are the usual six larval stages followed by the cypris but the increase in size during development is small compared with many other species. This small increase compares favourably with other species having very large embryos containing an excess of yolk and which do not take external food during larval development. The setation of the larval appendages is less than in other species and on the antenna and mandible does not increase after stage III. It is suggested that the lack of setation, coupled with a reduced development of the labrum, may be a consequence of the lack of a necessity for this species to feed externally during its planktonic life.  相似文献

Aspects of the biology of Tetraclita squamosa rufotincta Pilsbry were investigated. Although a tropical species, on the shores at Elat, Israel, its breeding is virtually restricted to the colder winter months. The causal factors are considered and the results of some experimental work relative to temperature control given. For a cirripede, T.s. rufotincta has a remarkably large ‘egg’ — unusual in a tropical or even warm-water species. The egg size is compared with that of other species and the survival value of large size considered; excess nutrients are carried over from the embryo to at least the first planktonic larva, and may aid survival in a relatively nutrient poor environment. The animals do not become sexually mature until the second year after their settlement. Growth takes place largély in the colder winter months and is seasonally separated from the period when gonadal tissue is developed.  相似文献

Intraspecific morphological differences related to the vertical position of Tetraclita squamosa Pilsbry from Elat on the intertidal zone have been previously reported. Using starch-gel electrophoresis, we have found differences in allozyme frequencies in animals from various tidal levels. We suggest that selection operates on certain morphological features which are correlated to different allozyme frequencies. Thus there are genetic variations in populations of barnacles which are at a vertical distance of only 50 cm apart.  相似文献

A small near shore artificial reef was constructed in the Gulf of Elat, northern Red Sea at a depth of 22–24m. The colonization of fishes was monitored for a period of 728 days and a total of 94 species was recorded. Colonization was initially rapid. The first species to appear were Dascyllus trimaculatus and Chaetodon paucifasciatus (day 2). In the first seven months, a gradual increase in the number of species was observed, after which it leveled off. Subsequently, a reduction in the number of individuals increased diversity of the community, as measured by the Shannon & Weaver index. The low complexity of the major components of the artificial reef, in addition to its location on a muddy, silty substrate, resulted in a constant cover of fine grain particles which presumably discouraged settlement of invertebrates and small cryptic fish species on the artificial reef.  相似文献

The tintinnids were studied as part of a microplankton investigationin the Gulf of Elat (Aqaba) (Red Sea) based on stratified samplescollected at a reference station over a period of one year (1974–75).The results of this study were compared to the data obtainedfrom the same area in the course of a previous survey (1970–71). The ranges of abundance of the tintinnids as a whole and ofthe leading species of this group were determined from 0–50m, 50–100 m and thereafter at intervals of 100 m downto a depth of 600 m for the samples collected during 1974–75.For those collected during 1970–71, the ranges of abundancewere determined at two depths in vertical profiles over thewater column from 50 and 200 m to the surface. Two distinct peaks were noted, one in November-December anda second in February-March. A third minor peak occurred duringJune-July. The main winter peak of February-March occurred duringthe turnover period characterized by two uniform temperaturesof 21°C or less throughout the water column. The seasonaland spatial distribution of the tintinnids closely followedthat of the main phytoplankton groups, with greatest abundancerecorded in the upper 100 m. The species composition of the tintinnids during the annualpeaks changed from season to season and from year to year. However,8 species of a total of 42 recorded during the investigationwere responsible for the annual peaks during both years. Amongthe environmental parameters monitored during the 1974–75survey only the temperature factor could be related to the distributionpattern of one of the 8 leading species of tintinnids. A summer submergence to deeper levels has been noted in regardto some of the prevailing species.  相似文献

The following parameters were measured during May 1976 along the coasts of the Gulf of Elat (or: Gulf of Aqaba): phytoplankton species composition, chlorophyll content and photosynthetic production; weight of suspended particles and nutrient concentration; chlorophyll content of the sediments. The study areas were coral reefs of the northern part of the Gulf and a mangrove pool south of it. Phytoplankton characteristics and nutrient levels are those of oligotrophic waters. However, the sediments harbour such an abundant plant biomass that in coastal waters per m2 surface area, there is several hundred times more chlorophyll in the sand than in the plankton. Reasons why both the mangrove and the coral reef may exhibit the same trends are discussed.  相似文献

In situ nitrogen fixation associated with the seagrass Halophila stipulacea, at the northern Gulf of Elat (Red Sea), is eight to ten times higher than that of nearby plant-free areas. A daily cycle of nitrogen fixation is evident, with rates during the day being seven times greater than during the night. Removal of seagrass leaves only from a patch within a seagrass bed gradually decreases nitrogen fixation activity, reaching the rates of plant-free areas after ten hours. A method devised for the in situ measurement of nitrogen fixation rates using belljars is described in detail. Nitrogen fixation rates in situ are higher than in the laboratory and lack the lag period typical to laboratory measurements. In laboratory experiments using intact plant samples, glucose enhances nitrogen fixation rates both in light and dark. Photosystem II inhibitor (3-3,4-dichloro-phenyl-1,1-dimethylurea) doubles nitrogen fixation rates in light. Both field and laboratory results indicate that light is essential for nitrogen fixation activity in the H. stipulacea bed possibly through its effect on cyanobacterial population that occupy the aerobic niches of the phyllosphere and on photosynthetic Rhodospirillacean bacteria that inhabit the anaerobic ones. Nitrogen fixation rates evident in H. stipulacea beds in situ account for a considerable portion of the biomass production by the seagrasses. The dependence of high nitrogenase activity by the diazotrophs on the presence of the seagrasses indicates the great importance of the seagrass community to the nitrogen cycle in its highly oligotrophic surroundings of the Gulf of Elat.  相似文献

Lovenia elongata (Gray), the Indo-West Pacific spatangoid, was studied in the Gulf of Elat ('Aqaba) at the northern end of the Red Sea. The occurrence and local distribution of this macrobenthic burrowing species was determined and related to the particle size distribution of the substrata in which it was found. Its habitat preference is for clean, grassless, sandy bottoms in intertidal areas (beaches and sandbars), and on sublittoral level bottoms of protected bays and lagoons sheltered from heavy wave action. The preferred sediments were found to range from medium to fine sand. The population density, size frequency distribution, growth, reproduction, recruitment, and mortality of a sublittoral population of L. elongata (at Wadi Taba, Sinai) were studied. The mode of life of this burrowing heart urchin was observed in situ and in aquaria. Its burrowing and emergence behaviour are described. Experiments were carried out on the effect of particle size on burrowing behaviour. There are significant differences in the ability of L. elongata to manipulate substrata of varying grain size. The burrowing process was found to be most rapid in natural sand of medium-fine composition, corresponding to the normal sediment of the urchin's habitat. Such sediments were also found to be suitable for successful larval settlement; juveniles did not survive in coarser sand.Differences in population density and spatial distribution between various size groups are attributed to differences in their ability to manipulate the substratum. L. elongata is found to be morphologically suited to sand, particularly medium-fine sand; however, it is restricted by its morphology to shallow burrowing, since it lacks specialized mechanisms for deeper burrowing and funnel building.  相似文献

Luminous bacteria in the Mediterranean Sea and the Gulf of Aqaba-Elat have different distribution patterns. In the Mediterranean Sea, Beneckea harveyi is present all year round, with different subtypes alternating in summer and winter; Photobacterium fischeri was only present during the winter. In the Gulf of Elat, P. leiognathi is present throughout the water column in similar densities during the entire year. This constancy in distribution is presumably due to the near-constancy in water temperature. In summer, Photobacterium leiognathi is replaced by B. harveyi in coastal surface waters. In the hypersaline Bardawil lagoon, only B. harveyi types are present. P. fischeri, a major component of the Mediterranean Sea winter communities, is absent from the lagoon. Luminous Beneckea strains show a great diversity in properties, e.g. temperature range for growth, sensitivity to infection by phages, sensitivity to attack by Bdellovibrio strains, and differences in tolerance to high-salinity shock. Therefore, subdivision of the taxonomic cluster of B. harveyi into subtypes is indicated. The composition of the luminous bacteria communities may serve as indicators of different marine water bodies. The symbiotic luminous bacteria of the light organ of the common Gulf of Elat fish, Photoblepharon palbebratus steinitzi, is different from any of the types described.  相似文献

Physiological characteristics of luminous bacteria isolated from the Mediterranean and Gulf of Elat were compared to determine their relationship to the specific seasonal and geographic distribution patterns of these bacteria. The effects of temperature on growth rate and yield, relative sensitivity to photooxidation, resistance to high salt concentration (8%), and ability to grow in nutrient-poor conditions appear to control these patterns. The winter appearance of Photobacterium fischeri and the succession of winter and summer types of Beneckea harveyi in the eastern Mediterranean are explained by different temperature requirements for growth. Sensitivity to photooxidation explains the disappearance of P. leiognathi, present in the main body of the Gulf of Elat throughout the year, from the shallow coastal strip. B. harveyi is present in this coastal strip which is higher in nutrients and in productivity than the open waters. Competition experiments between B. harveyi and P. leiognathi in batch and continuous culture indicate that the oligotrophic P. leiognathi is outcompeted by B. harveyi in rich and even in relatively poor media. The distribution pattern found in the Bardawil hypersaline lagoon is explained by selection of salinity-resistant mutants of B. harveyi from the Mediterranean Sea.  相似文献

The vertical zonation of 38 species of fish inhabiting coral reefs in the Sudanese Red Sea is described. A marked degree of vertical zonation of the fishes is shown to exist. The usefulness of a depth oriented survey method for studying reef fish is discussed in relation to these results.General relationships between vertical zonation and species diversity are noted.  相似文献

Trace elements are vital for the growth and development of all organisms. Little is known about the elemental content and trace metal biology of Red Sea demosponges. This study establishes an initial database of sponge elemental content. It provides the necessary foundation for further research of the mechanisms used by sponges to regulate the uptake, accumulation, and storage of metals. The metal content of 16 common sponge species was determined using ICP measurements. A combination of statistical methods was used to determine the correlations between the metals and detect species with significantly high or low concentrations of these metals. Bioaccumulation factors were calculated to compare sponge metal content to local sediment. Theonella swinhoei contained an extremely high concentration of arsenic and barium, much higher (at least 200 times) than all other species and local sediment. Hyrtios erecta had significantly higher concentration of Al, Cr, Fe, Mn, Ti and V than all other species. This is due to sediment accumulation and inclusion in the skeleton fibers of this sponge species. Suberites clavatus was found to contain significantly higher concentration of Cd, Co, Ni and Zn than all other species and local sediment, indicating active accumulation of these metals. It also has the second highest Fe concentration, but without the comparably high concentrations of Al, Mn and Ti that are evident in H. erecta and in local sediment. These differences indicate active uptake and accumulation of Fe in S. clavatus, this was also noted in Niphates rowi. A significantly higher B concentration was found in Crella cyatophora compared to all other species. These results indicate specific roles of trace elements in certain sponge species that deserve further analysis. They also serve as a baseline to monitor the effects of anthropogenic disturbances on Eilat''s coral reefs.  相似文献

Seawater samples were collected biweekly from the northern Gulf of Aqaba, Red Sea, for Phytoplankton analysis during the period May 1998 to October 1999. Microscopic counts and HPLC methods were employed. Procaryotic and eucaryotic ultraplankton dominated throughout most of the year, with larger nano- and microplankton making up only 5% of the photosynthetic biomass. Moderate seasonal variations in the 0–125 m integrated Chl a contrasted with a pronounced seasonal succession of the major taxonomic groups, reflecting the changes in the density stratification of the water column: Prochlorococcus dominated during the stratified summer period and were almost absent in winter. Chlorophyceae and Cryptophyceae were dominant during winter mixing but scarce or absent during summer. Diatoms and Synechococcus showed sharp and moderate biomass peaks in late winter and spring respectively, but remained at only low Chl a levels for the rest of the year. Chrysophyceae, Prymnesiophyceae and the scarce Dinophyceae showed no clear seasonal distribution pattern. The implications of alternating procaryotic and eucaryote dominated algal communities for the Red Sea pelagic food web are discussed. Surface zooplankton were studied in Egyptian coastal watersof the Gulf of Aqaba, from bimonthly samples from July 1994to May 1995. Species diversity, numerical abundance and dynamicswere analysed for each taxon, at six sites, inside three Protectorates.A total of 62 taxa and species were identified. At all sites, copepods were predominant in the standing crop with an averageof 1945 ind. M–3 and formed {small tilde}75.5%, numerically,of the total zooplankton community. The meroplanktonic larvaeoccupied the second rank and they constituted {small tilde}19.7%of the total zooplankton. Seasonally, the main peak of zooplanktonabundance was recorded in winter (January) with an average of3510 ind. M–3 while September was characterized by thelowest density (1906 ind. m–3 The relatively higher diversityvalues were recorded at Ras Mohammed Protectorate and a progressivedecline in diversity was observed northward.  相似文献

Shore fish community structure off the Jordanian Red Sea coast was determined on fringing coral reefs and in a seagrass-dominated bay at 6 m and 12 m depths. A total of 198 fish species belonging to 121 genera and 43 families was recorded. Labridae and Pomacentridae dominated the ichthyofauna in terms of species richness and Pomacentridae were most abundant. Neither diversity nor species richness was correlated to depth. The abundance of fishes was higher at the deep reef slope, due to schooling planktivorous fishes. At 12 m depth abundance of fishes at the seagrass-dominated site was higher than on the coral reefs. Multivariate analysis demonstrated a strong influence on the fish assemblages by depth and benthic habitat. Fish species richness was positively correlated with hard substrate cover and habitat diversity. Abundance of corallivores was positively linked with live hard coral cover. The assemblages of fishes were different on the shallow reef slope, deep reef slope and seagrass meadows. An analysis of the fish fauna showed that the Gulf of Aqaba harbours a higher species richness than previously reported. The comparison with fish communities on other reefs around the Arabian Peninsula and Indian Ocean supported the recognition of an Arabian subprovince within the Indian Ocean. The affinity of the Arabian Gulf ichthyofauna to the Red Sea is not clear. Received in revised form: 2 November 2001 Electronic Publication  相似文献

From what I personally observed on this trip and from information gathered en route and elsewhere, it would seem that-in spring at any rate-the migration along the Red Sea and Gulf of Suez is not very extensive, particularly with regard to the smaller birds. White Storks and Lesser Black-backed Gulls, however, follow this line in vast numbers on their journey north, though, as regards the first-named species, the vast majority had passed through earlier than the date of my visit to that district.
As will be noted from the list of species appended to this paper, very little collecting was done with the gun. The principal object of the trip was to obtain live specimens of the Osprey and other of the larger birds breeding in the locality for the Giza Zoological Gardens. In respect of the Osprey only was I successful, and returned with three young which were still flourishing in the Zoo collection when I left Egypt in July 1927. I was disappointed in not finding more species engaged in nesting operations, and it would appear that such birds as Sula leuco- gaster , Phaëton indicus , Casmerodius albus melanorhynchus , Platalea leucorodia , Larus leucophthalmus , and Sterna bergii welox , which undoubtedly breed in the latitude I visited, do so considerably later in the year than the month of April. Further south, on the Farsan Group of Islands Lat. N. 17°, the Brown Booby was breeding in October. Eggs were found at the end of that month and young birds early in November 1926.  相似文献

Summary Sixty-three sediment samples collected from the modern fringing reefs off the Jordan coast (Gulf of Aqaba, Red Sea) have been analysed in order to determine variations of composition and texture by using correspondence factor analysis. From the shore seawards, the following physiographic zones are recognized: beach; shallower backreef zone; reef flat zone; forereef zone including sandy or coral-built slopes. Eight sediment facies and subfacies can be recognized on the basis of total component composition and foraminiferal assemblages and four sediment facies can be recognized using grain-size data. Wellsorted, fine to medium, quartzofeldspathic sands (terrigenous facies) occur on beaches and outer sandy slopes close to wadi mouths. Backreef areas exhibit relatively well-sorted fine sands of terrigenous-coral and Miliolidae-Soritidae facies. Poorly sorted, coarse sands of coral-coral-line algal and Homotremid facies characterize reef flats and the upper parts of coral-built forereef areas, which respecitively display an Amphistegina-Spirolina subfacies and an Acervulina one. Poorly sorted, medium sands of coralmolluscan-foraminiferal (Amphistegina-Acervulina) facies are restricted to the lower parts of the forereef zone. Latcral limits of the various biofacies coincide with the distribution of the related organic communities.  相似文献

There are two sewage outfalls along the Jordanian coastline in the Gulf of Aqaba. During 1982 and 1983 a total of 328 core samples (0.01 m2 to a depth of 15 cm) were collected from the two outfalls, two control stations which resemble the outfalls in depth and sediment texture, and from two stations 100 m on both sides of each outfall. Faunal analysis revealed that the total number of individuals, number of species, species richness, and faunal similarities of macrobenthic invertebrates were lower at the sewage outfall near the phosphate loading port than the control station during both collections. At the 100 m stations, the numbers of individuals were generally higher than the sewage and control stations. The number of species, however, was highest at the control station and lowest at the sewage outfall. At the other sewage outfall, where the sewage effluent is discharged sporadically, no measurable effects on macrobenthic invertebrates were found.  相似文献

The monthly and ontogenetic variations in diet of hairtail Trichiurus margarites Li (1992) [20] (Perciformes, Trichiuridae) were examined in the Beibu Gulf of the South China Sea from October 2008 to September 2009. Stomachs of 666 hairtail ranging in size from 121 mm to 561 mm pre-anal length (PL) were sampled monthly from commercial fish catches. Fish were the primary prey, with Decapterus maruadsi (Perciformes, Carangidae) averaging 23% by number, 34% by weight, and 49% by Index of Relative Importance (IRI). Other important prey in the diet included the small benthic fish, Bregmaceros rarisquamosus and Bregmaceros nectabanus (Gadiformes, Bregmaceroridae) and the decapod shrimp, Acetes chinensis, with IRI percentages of 8%, 4%, and 3%, respectively. Low rates of cannibalism and predation on 30 additional species of prey were observed. Trophic diversity (Brillouin Index, Hz) was moderate throughout the year. Mean feeding intensity (Repletion Index, RI) varied considerably by month and increased with the gonad maturity stages of hairtail; conversely, the proportion of empty stomachs decreased with maturity stages, from 60.9% empty at Stage I to 41.6% empty at Stage VI. Prey weight and numbers differed significantly among the 14 PL size classes and increased with body size. Cluster analysis of prey IRI values also indicated differences in the feeding habits of hairtail by size class. Understanding the monthly and ontogenetic changes in hairtail diet may assist in the development and improvement of marine ecosystem modeling for the Beibu Gulf, South China Sea.  相似文献

The emergent plants Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. ex Steud and Zizania latifolia (Griseb.) Stapf. are distributed along a gradient of increasing water depth, with P. australis restricted to shallow water and Z. latifolia to deeper water. The lower limits of the two vegetational zones were discussed from the view-point of oxygen supply from aerial shoots. The oxygen influx to the underground organs from aerial shoots is proportional to the gradient between oxygen concentrations in atmosphere and inside the basal stem (C). The proportional constant (Q), called here the ventilation coefficient, expresses the efficiency of the diffusion of oxygen. An attempt was made to measure Q and C. The values of Q for the two species in their dominant niches are higher in Z. latifolia than in P. australis, corresponding to the natural distribution with increasing depths of water. Q in Z. latifolia and P. australis first increased and then decreased. Corresponding to such changes of Q, the oxygen concentration inside the basal stem (C) fell to low values for Z. latifolia at the greatest water-depth. Since in Z. latifolia a low value of C in deeper waters was accompanied by a decline in standing crop of aerial shoots, it was concluded that oxygen is the limiting factor for the distribution of Z. latifolia in the deeper waters.  相似文献
