The numbers of intestinal helminth species (parasite richnesS) recorded from each of 488 vertebrate host species are compared using data compiled from the published literature. Associations between parasite richness, sampling effort, host size and host habitat (aquatic versus terrestrial) are assessed using a method designed to control for phylogenetic association. Parasite richness increases with the number of surveys on which each estimate of parasite richness is based (sampling effort). When the effects of sampling effort are controlled for, there remains a strong positive relationship between parasite richness and host body size. There is no tendency for aquatic hosts to harbour more parasite species than terrestrial hosts independently of differences in sampling effort and body size. The results are interpreted in the context of hosts representing habitats for parasite colonization, resource allocation between parasite species, and the age of the major mammalian radiations.  相似文献

Three species of trematode [Orchipedium jolliei Schell, 1967; Prohyptiamus grusi Kocan, Waldrup, Ramakka, and Iverson, 1982; Echinostoma revolutum (Froelich, 1802)], three species of nematode (Tetrameres grusi Shumakovich, 1946; Synhimanthus sp.; Contracaecum sp.), and one species of cestode (Anomotaenia sp.) were recovered from 146 sandhill cranes, Grus canadensis (Linnaeus), collected in Alaska, Canada, and two areas in Texas. The only common and abundant species were O. jolliei and T grusi. Of cranes collected in Texas, those that came from the Canadian breeding grounds had significantly greater abundances of O. jolliei and T. grusi than those from Alaska. However, cluster analysis using rank abundances of helminth species across the four geographic regions and stepwise multiple discriminant analysis using the grouping variable of the presence or absence of a subspecies-specific pancreatic protein indicated that classification of cranes into populations based on helminth abundances was impractical as a management technique.  相似文献

Parasitic organisms can affect ecosystems by driving population dynamics of the hosts and influencing community interactions. The life history of the host can determine the relationship with its parasites. Reproductive effort and age of the host are two life history aspects often used to explain parasitic infection. In this study, we examined helminth parasite assemblages in two cyprinids with contrasting reproductive strategies, Cyprinella venusta (crevice spawners) and Notropis volucellus (broadcast spawners), in the Paluxy River (Texas) from May 2014 through October 2015. Host reproduction was measured using the gonadosomatic index, and standard length was used as an estimate of age. Parasite infection was measured using total number of helminths, parasite richness, Shannon’s diversity, and Simpson’s diversity. Our results revealed significant differences in parasite number and diversity between the two species, but not between males and females within species. Additionally, our results showed that standard length was a better predictor of parasitic infection than the gonadosomatic index. The relationship between host size and parasitic infection was expected; however, the lack of a relationship between gonadosomatic indices and parasitic infection was surprising. In conclusion, standard length was a better predictor of parasitic infection than the gonadosomatic index, and as such multiple species and life history traits should be considered when investigating host–parasite relationships.  相似文献

Schistosomiasis is a major human helminth infection endemic in developing countries. Urogenital schistosomiasis, caused by S. haematobium, is the most prevalent human schistosome disease in sub-Saharan Africa. Currently control of schistosome infection is by treatment of infected people with the anthelmintic drug praziquantel, but there are calls for continued efforts to develop a vaccine against the parasites. In order for successful vaccine development, it is necessary to understand the biology and molecular characteristics of the parasite. Ultimately, there is need to understand the nature and dynamics of the relationship between the parasite and the natural host. Thus, my studies have focused on molecular characterization of different parasite stages and integrating this information with quantitative approaches to investigate the nature and development of protective immunity against schistosomes in humans. Proteomics has proved a powerful tool in these studies allowing the proteins expressed by the parasite to be characterized at a molecular and immunological level. In this review, the application of proteomic approaches to understanding the human-schistosome relationship as well as testing specific hypotheses on the nature and development of schistosome-specific immune responses is discussed. The contribution of these approaches to informing schistosome vaccine development is highlighted.  相似文献

The suggestion that a clonal population structure may typify Plasmodium populations has proved highly controversial. For the most part, existing population genetic data from wild populations contradict the idea and are consistent with randomly interbreeding populations. In this article, Andrew Read and Koren Day point out that these data could also be consistent with population subdivision and frequent nonrandom mating, which current sampling methods would be incapable of detecting.  相似文献

Studies investigating parasite diversity have shown substantial geographical variation in parasite species richness. Most of these studies have, however, adopted a local scale approach, which may have masked more general patterns. Recent studies have shown that ectoparasite species richness in mammals seems highly repeatable among populations of the same mammal host species at a regional scale. In light of these new studies we have reinvestigated the case of parasitic helminths by using a large data set of parasites from mammal populations in 3 continents. We collected homogeneous data and demonstrated that helminth species richness is highly repeatable in mammals at a regional scale. Our results highlight the strong influence of host identity in parasite species richness and call for future research linking helminth species found in a given host to its ecology, immune defences and potential energetic trade-offs.  相似文献

Natural populations often show genetic variation in parasite resistance, forming the basis for evolutionary response to selection imposed by parasitism. We investigated whether previous epidemics selected for higher resistance to novel parasite isolates in a Daphnia galeatamicroparasite system by comparing susceptibility of host clones from populations with varying epidemic history. We manipulated resource availability to evaluate whether diet influences Daphnia susceptibility as epidemics are common in nutrient‐rich lakes. Exposing clones from 10 lakes under two food treatments to an allopatric protozoan parasite, we found that Daphnia originating from lakes (mainly nutrient rich) with previous epidemics better resist infection. Despite this result, there was a tendency of higher susceptibility in the low food treatment, suggesting that higher resistance of clones from populations with epidemic background is not directly caused by lake nutrient level. Rather, our results imply that host populations respond to parasite‐mediated selection by evolving higher parasite resistance.  相似文献

This article reviews the current state of understanding of reproductive pheromones in amphibians, focusing mainly on the purification and characterization of peptide pheromones in newts of the genus Cynops, molecular cloning of cDNAs encoding the pheromone molecules, and hormonal control of secretion of these pheromones. Pheromones that attract sexually developed female Cynops pyrrhogaster and C. ensicauda newts were isolated from the male abdominal glands. The C. pyrrhogaster and C. ensicauda pheromones are peptides, designated sodefrin and silefrin, with the amino acid sequences SIPSKDALLK and SILSKDAQLK, respectively. Each pheromone attracts only conspecific females. Molecular cloning of cDNAs encoding sodefrin and silefrin revealed the presence of precursor proteins that are considered to generate these pheromone peptides. Pheromone precursor mRNA levels and radioimmunoassayable pheromone concentrations in the abdominal glands were elevated by prolactin and androgen. Sexual dimorphism and hormone dependency of the responsiveness of vomeronasal epithelium to sodefrin were noted. Significance of pheromones in the form of peptide for those performing reproductive behavior in an aquatic environment was also discussed.  相似文献

This paper describes the multidimensional niche of syntopic smooth newts Triturus vulgaris. alpine newts Triturus alpestris. and Italian crested newts Triturus carnifex. which constitute a complex community of eight components (the three species and their larvae, plus juvenile and neotenic alpine newts) All the potentially limiting resources (seasonal time, diel time, habitat and food) are analyzed as single niche dimensions, and then the real multidimensional niche is calculated Resource states are objectively defined, using an algorithm that groups the significant resource categories The larvae were segregated by prey, season, habitat, and water depth, in order of decreasing importance, their overlap was very low when their complete multidimensional niche was considered, and therefore they have few opportunities for present–day competition The adults were largely segregated by season and water depth, and to a lesser degree by habitat and prey, their multidimensional niches overlapped to a certain degree, thus leaving conditions for ongoing competition Considenng all the species and the life stages together, the order of importance for segregation was season, prey, habitat, water depth and diel activity, with a low overlap in the complete niche Differences m prey size were probably due to morphological constraints, differences in diel activity had very little effect on segregation except m separating larvae from the adults, and were likely promoted by need to avoid mutual predation and cannibalism It remains to be tested whether seasonal, habitat, and water depth differences are due to competitive pressures or to ecophysiological constraints  相似文献

Species accumulation curves (SACs) chart the increase in recovery of new species as a function of some measure of sampling effort. Studies of parasite diversity can benefit from the application of SACs, both as empirical tools to guide sampling efforts and predict richness, and because their properties are informative about community patterns and the structure of parasite diversity. SACs can be used to infer interactivity in parasite infracommunities, to partition species richness into contributions from different spatial scales and different levels of the host hierarchy (individuals, populations and communities) or to identify modes of community assembly (niche versus dispersal). A historical tendency to treat individual hosts as statistically equivalent replicates (quadrats) seemingly satisfies the sample-based subgroup of SACs but care is required in this because of the inequality of hosts as sampling units. Knowledge of the true distribution of parasite richness over multiple host-derived and spatial scales is far from complete but SACs can improve the understanding of diversity patterns in parasite assemblages.  相似文献

Bath application of the excitatory amino acids L-aspartate and/or L-glutamate or their agonists N-methyl-D,L-aspartate and/or kainate elicited swimming movements in spinal tadpoles. Swimming cycles induced by the amino acids were in the frequency range of natural movements, and could be evoked after sectioning all dorsal roots in the exposed spinal segments. Locomotion was only elicited by L-aspartate or L-glutamate at low concentrations when the bath medium was rapidly circulated over the exposed surface of the spinal cord, and was of much shorter duration than the agonist-induced movements. These results indicate some differences between the actions of L-aspartate and L-glutamate and their agonists on the tadpole spinal cord.  相似文献

A group of 88 newts, Triturus cristatus carnifex (Laurenti), was rendered totally anemic by administering acetylphenylhydrazine (APH) in the breeding water for 48 h at a concentration of 25 mg/liter. The course of erythron restoration was followed for 5 months, sacrificing four specimens per week and analyzing the blood and spleen hemopoietic tissue. The return to the normal values of the red blood cell count occurred through marked increases in concentration at fairly regular intervals, which is best explained by a discontinuous, rhythmic erythropoiesis. This fact is strictly correlated with the intermittent mitotic activity observed in the spleen and with the periodic appearance of large quantities of immature elements in the blood smears. The APH-induced synchronization of newt erythropoietic activity revealed the approximate length of each erythropoietic cycle to be 4 to 5 weeks and the erythropoietic life span to be 50 to 60 days.  相似文献

Predators have the potential to limit the spread of pathogens not only by selecting infected prey but also by shaping prey demographics. We tested this idea with an epidemiological experiment in which we simulated variable levels of size-selective predation on zooplankton hosts and monitored the persistence of host and parasite populations. In the absence of simulated predation, the virulent protozoan Caullerya mesnili frequently drove its host Daphnia galeata to extinction. Uninfected control populations showed lower extinction rates and higher average densities than infected populations in the absence of simulated predation (all of the latter went extinct or remained infected). With a weak removal rate of the largest hosts, the proportion of populations in which the parasite drove the host to extinction decreased, while the number of populations in which the host persisted and the parasite went extinct increased. Host-parasite coexistence was also observed in some cases. With intermediate levels of removal, most of the parasite populations went extinct, while the host populations persisted. With an even higher removal rate, Daphnia were driven to extinction as well. Thus, variation in one factor, size-selective mortality, resulted in four different patterns of population dynamics. Our results highlight the potential role of predation in shaping the epidemiology and community structure of host-parasite systems.  相似文献

Peripheral O2 chemoreceptors initiate adaptive cardiorespiratory responses to hypoxia in vertebrates. Morphological and physiological evidence suggests that, in fish, neuroepithelial cells (NECs) of the gill perform this role. We conducted a comparative examination in three species of teleosts (zebrafish, goldfish and trout) and larvae of the amphibian Xenopus laevis, using whole-mount gill preparations and confocal immunofluorescence, to elucidate the distribution, morphology and innervation of gill NECs. Nerve fibres were immunolabelled with the neuronal marker zn-12 and were associated with serotonin-immunoreactive NECs in the gills of all species tested. With the exception of trout, innervated NECs were present on all gill arches in the filaments and respiratory lamellae in fish and on homologous structures in Xenopus (i.e. gill “tufts”, including respiratory terminal branches). Thus, the distribution and innervation of NECs of the internal gills of amphibians and teleosts are relatively well conserved, suggesting an important role for gill NECs as O2 chemoreceptors in aquatic vertebrates. Furthermore, the size and density of gill NECs is variable among teleosts and developmental stages of Xenopus larvae and may be dependent on general gill dimensions or environmental conditions. This report constitutes the first comparative study of gill NECs in fish and amphibians and highlights the significance of gill NECs as an evolutionary model for studying O2 sensing in vertebrates.
