The squirrel poxvirus (SQPV) is the probable mediator of apparent competition between the introduced invading gray squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) and the red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) in the UK, and modeling studies have shown that this viral disease has had a significant impact on the decline of the red squirrel in the UK. However, given our limited understanding of the epidemiology of the disease, and more generally the effects of invasive species on parasite ecology, there is a need to investigate the transmission dynamics and the relative pathogenicity of the virus between species. We aimed to increase our knowledge of these processes through an empirical study in which we: (i) used pathological signs and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to diagnose SQPV disease in red squirrels found dead during scanning surveillance between 1993 and 2005; (ii) detected antibody to SQPV using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in the same animals; and (iii) mapped cases of the disease, and the gray squirrel distribution, using a geographical information system. We analyzed the distribution of cases of SQPV disease according to woodland type, a measure of squirrel density. SQPV disease occurred only in areas of England also inhabited by seropositive gray squirrels, and as the geographical range of gray squirrels expanded, SQPV disease occurred in these new gray squirrel habitats, supporting a role for the gray squirrel as a reservoir host of the virus. There was a delay between the establishment of invading gray squirrels and cases of the disease in red squirrels which implies gray squirrels must reach a threshold number or density before the virus is transmitted to red squirrels. The spatial and temporal trend in SQPV disease outbreaks suggested that SQPV disease will have a significant effect on Scottish populations of red squirrels within 25 years. The even spread of cases of disease across months suggested a direct rather than vector-borne transmission route is more likely. Eight juvenile and sub-adult free-living red squirrels apparently survived exposure to SQPV by mounting an immune response, the first evidence of immunity to SQPV in free-living red squirrels, which possibly suggests a changing host-parasite relationship and that the use of a vaccine may be an effective management tool to protect remnant red squirrel populations.  相似文献

Infectious disease introduced by non‐native species is increasingly cited as a facilitator of native population declines, but direct evidence may be lacking due to inadequate population and disease prevalence data surrounding an outbreak. Previous indirect evidence and theoretical models support squirrelpox virus (SQPV) as being potentially involved in the decline of red squirrels (Sciurus vulgaris) following the introduction of the non‐native gray squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) to the United Kingdom. The red squirrel is a major UK conservation concern and understanding its continuing decline is important for any attempt to mitigate the decline. The red squirrel–gray squirrel system is also exemplary of the interplay between infectious disease (apparent competition) and direct competition in driving the replacement of a native by an invasive species. Time series data from Merseyside are presented on squirrel abundance and squirrelpox disease (SQPx) incidence, to determine the effect of the pathogen and the non‐native species on the native red squirrel populations. Analysis indicates that SQPx in red squirrels has a significant negative impact on squirrel densities and their population growth rate (PGR). There is little evidence for a direct gray squirrel impact; only gray squirrel presence (but not density) proved to influence red squirrel density, but not red squirrel PGR. The dynamics of red SQPx cases are largely determined by previous red SQPx cases, although previous infection of local gray squirrels also feature, and thus, SQPV‐infected gray squirrels are identified as potentially initiating outbreaks of SQPx in red squirrels. Retrospective serology indicates that approximately 8% of red squirrels exposed to SQPV may survive infection during an epidemic. This study further highlights the UK red squirrel – gray squirrel system as a classic example of a native species population decline strongly facilitated by infectious disease introduced by a non‐native species. It is therefore paramount that disease prevention and control measures are integral in attempts to conserve red squirrels in the United Kingdom.  相似文献

Ninety-one red squirrels (Sciurus vulgaris) found dead in the UK between January 1994 and August 1998 were necropsied at the Institute of Zoology (London, UK); their oral cavities were examined visually, and in eight cases, radiographically. Four red squirrels, which had evidence of oral disease when necropsied as part of a mortality survey, also were examined. A low prevalence (prevalence = 0.033, SE = 0.02, n = 91) of oral disease was found in free-living red squirrels. In only two cases was oral disease the probable cause of death. Attrition of the check teeth (three cases) and overgrowth of the incisors (four cases) were the most common lesions found. Partial anodontia was recorded in one squirrel.  相似文献

The North American red squirrel ( Tamiasciurus hudsonicus ) has expanded its range into the central hardwoods of the United States in conjunction with increasing forest fragmentation and declining gray squirrel ( Sciurus carolinensis ) populations. We used translocation experiments and patch occupancy data to test for interspecific differences in mobility and sensitivity to habitat loss and modification by agriculture. We released squirrels in fencerows to test the hypothesis that gray squirrels display inferior mobility relative to red and fox ( S. niger ) squirrels. Elapsed time to movement from fencerows for 76 individuals increased with distance to forest patches and harvesting of crops. Gray and red squirrels took longer to move from fencerows than fox squirrels, and gray squirrels were less successful at moving from fencerows than red and fox squirrels. Ecologically scaled landscape indices revealed the degree to which interspecific differences in mobility and individual area requirements accounted for the occurrence of these species across landscapes. Gray squirrel distribution was constrained both by individual area requirements and dispersal ability. Occurrence of red and fox squirrels was related to patch size but was unaffected by landscape connectivity.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of misoprostol on bone mineral density in postmenopausal women. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was performed in a randomized controlled prospective manner in 90 women with menopause at Süleymaniye Maternity and Women's Diseases Teaching and Research Hospital between January and December 2003. Cases were divided into three groups each consisting of 30 women who were in menopause for at least 1 year and had t-scores less than -1 by dual energy X-ray densitometry (DEXA). Group I was treated with misoprostol and calcium, Group II received tibolone and calcium and Group III was given calcium only and considered as control group. In all patients, bone mineral density in L1-L4 vertebrae, femur neck and Ward triangle were measured by DEXA and t and z scores were calculated. RESULTS: All groups were similar demographically. Bone mineral density in L1-L4 vertebrae, femur neck and Ward triangle in the group treated with misoprostol, increased by 5, 8.1 and 3.6%, respectively. In the tibolone group, bone mineral density in L1-L4 vertebrae, femur neck and Ward triangle increased by 8.3, 5.3 and 7.8%, respectively. There was not a significant difference in t and z-scores and bone mineral density measurements between misoprostol and tibolon groups. CONCLUSION: Misoprostol may be an alternative treatment for patients with osteopenia and osteoporosis who are not suitable for hormone replacement therapy.  相似文献

An infectious disease caused by Squirrelpox virus has contributed to the decline of red squirrels, Sciurus vulgaris, in the British Isles. Because of the heightened disease surveillance activity in red squirrels, adenovirus infection with associated mortality has been detected. Adenoviral disease is described in other rodent species usually associated with stressors. Here we 1) describe the pathologic findings in red squirrels found dead with adenoviral infection and gastrointestinal disease, and 2) investigate the epizootiology of the disease through pathologic investigation, scanning surveillance, and virologic studies. Ten red squirrels involved in conservation studies were diagnosed with adenoviral infection by electron microscopy or PCR. All squirrels exhibited diarrhea and small intestinal inflammation or hemorrhage was evident in seven cases. Lesions indicative of splenic lymphocytolysis were observed in one squirrel and leukocytic hepatitis in another. No adenovirus was detected in grey squirrels, Sciurus carolinensis, inhabiting the same forest area, but previous serologic studies showed that grey squirrels cannot be discounted as a reservoir of the virus. Scanning surveillance showed that 12% of 493 red squirrels had diarrheal disease and two of 13 free-living red squirrels with diarrheal disease had adenovirus infection. Adenoviral disease in declining free-living wild red squirrel populations in the British Isles occurs at a detectable frequency and its impact on the conservation of this species deserves further attention.  相似文献

Bone loss from the paralysed limbs after spinal cord injury (SCI) is well documented. Under physiological conditions, bones are adapted to forces which mainly emerge from muscle pull. After spinal cord injury (SCI), muscles can no longer contract voluntarily and are merely activated during spasms. Based on the Ashworth scale, previous research has suggested that these spasms may mitigate bone losses. We therefore wished to assess muscle forces after SCI with a more direct measure and compare it to measures of bone strength. We hypothesized that the bones in SCI patients would be in relation to the loss of muscle forces. Six male patients with SCI 6.4 (SD 4.3) years earlier and 6 age-matched, able-bodied control subjects were investigated. Bone scans from the right knee were obtained by pQCT. The knee extensor muscles were electrically stimulated via the femoral nerve, isometric knee extension torque was measured and patellar tendon force was estimated. Tendon force upon electrical stimulation in the SCI group was 75% lower than in the control subjects (p<0.01). Volumetric bone mineral density of the patella and of the proximal tibia epiphysis were 50% lower in the SCI group than in the control subjects (p<0.01). Cortical area was lower by 43% in the SCI patients at the proximal tibia metaphysis, and by 33% at the distal femur metaphysis. No group differences were found in volumetric cortical density. Close curvilinear relationships were found between stress and volumetric density for the tibia epiphysis (r(2)=0.90) and for the patella (r(2)=0.91). A weaker correlation with the tendon force was found for the cortical area of the proximal tibia metaphysis (r(2)=0.63), and none for the distal femur metaphysis. These data suggest that, under steady state conditions after SCI, epiphyseal bones are well adapted to the muscular forces. For the metaphysis of the long bones, such an adaptation appears to be less evident. The reason for this remains unclear.  相似文献

The control of grey squirrels (Sciurus carolinensis) is widely undertaken as a conservation measure to protect red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) populations in the UK. However, inconsistencies and omissions in data collection, as well as fluctuating financial resourcing of control efforts, have meant that it has to date proved difficult to quantify the impact of any regional control initiative upon populations. Here we have scrutinized a 13 years period (1998–2010) within an ongoing grey squirrel control project that reflects the resource challenges typically faced by red squirrel conservation programmes. We present evidence that despite variation in grey squirrel control intensity, the abundance of grey squirrels ultimately decreased significantly. Trapping success was significantly higher in spring and summer months and a greater abundance of grey squirrels was found in deciduous woodland and hazel dominated scrub relative to other habitats; two findings that reinforce existing guidance within national control best practice. Grey squirrels carry an infection that causes epidemic pathogenic disease if spread to the native red squirrel. We observed that the proportion of seropositive grey squirrels decreased constantly from 2003 to 2010 when only 4 % of sampled animals were seropositive. This discovery indicates that culling can in parallel remove both the competitive and disease threat posed to red by grey squirrels. The historical paucity of scientific data on the effectiveness of grey squirrel control as a tactic in UK red squirrel conservation means that the findings of this study will significantly advance conservation best practice and inform the development of future national strategy.  相似文献

Growth hormone (GH) is important for skeletal growth as well as for a normal bone metabolism in adults. The skeletal growth and adult bone metabolism was studied in mice with an inactivated growth hormone receptor (GHR) gene. The lengths of femur, tibia, and crown-rump were, as expected, decreased in GHR-/- mice. Unexpectedly, GHR-/- mice displayed disproportional skeletal growth reflected by decreased femur/crown-rump and femur/tibia ratios. GHR-/- mice demonstrated decreased width of the growth plates in the long bones and disturbed ossification of the proximal tibial epiphysis. Furthermore, the area bone mineral density (BMD) as well as the bone mineral content (BMC)/body weight were markedly decreased in GHR-/- mice. The decrease in BMC in GHR-/- mice was not due to decreased trabecular volumetric BMD but to a decreased cross-sectional cortical bone area In conclusion, GHR-/- mice demonstrate disproportional skeletal growth and markedly decreased bone mineral content.  相似文献

In Britain, the population of native red squirrels Sciurus vulgaris has suffered population declines and local extinctions. Interspecific resource competition and disease spread by the invasive gray squirrel Sciurus carolinensis are the main factors behind the decline. Gray squirrels have adapted to the British landscape so efficiently that they are widely distributed. Knowledge on how gray squirrels are using the landscape matrix and being able to predict their movements will aid management. This study is the first to use global positioning system (GPS) collars on wild gray squirrels to accurately record movements and land cover use within the landscape matrix. This data were used to validate Geographical Information System (GIS) least‐cost model predictions of movements and provided much needed information on gray squirrel movement pathways and network use. Buffered least‐cost paths and least‐cost corridors provide predictions of the most probable movements through the landscape and are seen to perform better than the more expansive least‐cost networks which include all possible movements. Applying the knowledge and methodologies gained to current gray squirrel expansion areas, such as Scotland and in Italy, will aid in the prediction of potential movement areas and therefore management of the invasive gray squirrel. The methodologies presented in this study could potentially be used in any landscape and on numerous species.  相似文献

We used giving-up densities in food patches to measure the effectsof several direct (left by the predator) and indirect (environmentalcorrelates of risk) cues of predatory risk on the foraging behaviorof free-living fox squirrels (Sciurus niger) and thirteen-linedground squirrels (Spermophihis tridtctmlineatus). Increasesin giving-up density in response to stimuli allow quantitativecomparisons of the effects of different types of cues. We usedolfactory (urine of red fox) and visual (plastic models of owls)direct cues. As indirect cues, we used mkrohabitat (near orfar from a refuge), background coloration (white, green, andbrown tarpaulins), and escape substrate (canvas tarpaulins versusnatural surrounding substrates). Both squirrel species respondedmost strongly to microhabitat Fox squirrels increased theirgiving-up density by 97% when feeding 4–6 m from a treecompared to feeding at the tree base. Thirteen-lined groundsquirrels increased giving-up densities 84% when feeding 2 mfrom their burrows compared to feeding at the burrow entry. In response to an unfavorable escape substrate (canvas versusgrass), fox squirrel giving-up densities increased 61%. Foxsquirrels and ground squirrels increased giving-up densities26% and 35%, respectively, in response to a plastic owL Backgroundcoloration had no demonstrable effect on the giving-up densitiesof fox squirrels. In contrast to other work on nocturnal mammalianherbivores and granivores, the diurnal fox squirrels did notrespond to olfactory cues.  相似文献

Species with expanding ranges provide unique opportunities to examine environmentally induced adaptations in ecological traits and anatomical characteristics. Since the late 1800s, the North American red squirrel (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus) has expanded its range into the central hardwoods of the United States in conjunction with increasing agricultural fragmentation. We examined whether red squirrels from the central hardwoods (west‐central Indiana, USA) displayed differences in foraging behaviors and morphology relative to red squirrels from conifer‐dominated environments (upper peninsula of Michigan, USA), a biome in which red squirrels evolved. Specifically, we measured rates of energy extraction, variation in cranial morphology, and diet preference between red squirrels from both regions. In addition, we compared foraging behaviors of red squirrels from the central hardwoods to those of a competitor that coevolved with nut‐producing trees, the gray squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis). Red squirrels from Indiana and Michigan differed significantly in the efficiency with which they used food items, with individuals from each region extracting calories at a more rapid rate for items that were common in their region. The enhanced efficiency of southern red squirrels feeding on black walnuts (Juglans nigra) was correlated with geographic differences in cranial morphology; skulls of southern squirrels were larger, with longer jaws and higher metrics associated with greater mandibular force than northern squirrels. Contrary to our expectations, red squirrels from Indiana and Michigan did not differ qualitatively in preferences for food items, suggesting that diet choice may be governed by perishability of food items rather than by rates of energy extraction. Gray squirrels were more efficient than Indiana red squirrels in using all food items, and differed only slightly from red squirrels with regard to preference for food items. Measures of efficiency of resource use, after accounting for species‐specific metabolic requirements, suggest that red squirrels are unlikely to compensate ecologically for declining gray squirrel populations in fragmented portions of the central hardwoods, with potentially adverse effects for forest regeneration and succession. Our results demonstrate that invading species can display significant flexibility in adapting to new environments, but they may not be flexible enough to exploit resources in a manner comparable to native species.  相似文献

The Eurasian red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) is an emblematic species for conservation, and its decline in the British Isles exemplifies the impact that alien introductions can have on native ecosystems. Indeed, red squirrels in this region have declined dramatically over the last 60 years due to the spread of squirrelpox virus following the introduction of the gray squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis). Currently, red squirrel populations in Britain are fragmented and need to be closely monitored in order to assess their viability and the effectiveness of conservation efforts. The situation is even more dramatic in the South of England, where S. vulgaris survives only on islands (Brownsea Island, Furzey Island, and the Isle of Wight). Using the D‐loop, we investigated the genetic diversity and putative ancestry of the squirrels from Southern England and compared them to a European dataset composed of 1,016 samples from 54 populations. We found that our three populations were more closely related to other squirrels from the British Isles than squirrels from Europe, showed low genetic diversity, and also harbored several private haplotypes. Our study demonstrates how genetically unique the Southern English populations are in comparison with squirrels from the continental European range. We report the presence of four private haplotypes, suggesting that these populations may potentially harbor distinct genetic lineages. Our results emphasize the importance of preserving these isolated red squirrel populations for the conservation of the species.  相似文献

Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry was used to examine 20 patients with obstructive jaundice, who had undergone external biliary drainage in the first surgical stage. A clinical comparison group comprised 34 patients without hepatobiliary diseases. Bone mineral density was measured in the lumbar spine, proximal femur, and ultradistal antibrachium. Impaired biliation was found to result in bone loss in the early-stage of the disease, which was more marked in the spongy bone. This allows the ultradistal antibrachium to be identified as a main observation area for dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry to make an early diagnosis of mineralization disorders. The integrated T index (Tint) calculated on the basis of the X-ray densitometry of a few skeletal portions may be used to obtain generalized information on bone mineral density.  相似文献

Bone mineral density (BMD) assessed by double-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) accurately estimates the bone mass in living individuals, and is thus the method usually employed in the diagnosis and follow-up of osteopenia. It is preferred, in clinical settings, to the more invasive and destructive histomorphometrical assessment of trabecular bone mass in undecalcified bone samples. This study was performed in order to examine the value of DEXA-assessed BMD at the proximal end of the right tibia, either alone or in combination with the cortico-medullary index at the midshaft point of the right tibia (CMI), in the diagnosis of osteopenia in a prehistoric sample composed of 95 pre-Hispanic individuals from Gran Canaria. Age at death could be estimated in 34 cases. Diagnosis of osteopenia was performed by histomorphometrical assessment of trabecular bone mass (TBM) in an undecalcified bone section of a small portion of the proximal epiphysis of the right tibia. A high prevalence of osteopenia was found among the population of Gran Canaria. Both TBM and BMD were significantly lower in the older individuals than in younger ones, and BMD was also significantly lower in female individuals. BMD was moderately correlated with TBM (r = +0.51); the correlation was higher if CMI was included (multiple r = +0.615). BMD values lower than 0.7 g/cm2 showed a high specificity (>93%) at excluding normal TBM values. These methods were prospectively applied in a further sample of 21 right tibiae from Gran Canaria, Tenerife, and El Hierro. The results were similar to those obtained in the larger sample. Thus, DEXA-assessed BMD combined with CMI (noninvasive procedures) may be useful in detecting osteopenia in ancient populations.  相似文献

Differences in habitat requirements and the spatial distribution of habitat for native and introduced species can determine outcomes of biological invasions. Introduced eastern gray squirrels (Sciurus carolinensis) have displaced native red squirrels (S. vulgaris) in Europe and have been implicated as a contributing factor to the decline of western gray squirrels (S. griseus) in North America. Eastern and western gray squirrels are associated with oak (Quercus spp.), but little is known about how these species interact. From April 2007 to April 2012, we radio-tracked sympatric eastern and western gray squirrels in western Washington to compare habitat use and evaluate competitive interactions. We developed resource utilization functions for each species and evaluated distribution of habitat on Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington, USA. Both species shared affinity for closed canopy forests and oaks; however, important differences in relationships with riparian areas and shrub cover resulted in low overlap in habitat distribution, which likely limited potential competitive interactions. Eastern gray squirrels appeared restricted to areas around wetlands likely because they supported the deciduous tree species that comprise habitat for this species in its native range. Use by western gray squirrels, but not eastern gray squirrels, significantly decreased with increasing shrub cover. Forestry practices that promote mixed oak-conifer with little shrub cover in uplands can benefit western gray squirrels and minimize interactions with eastern gray squirrels. © 2020 The Wildlife Society.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to determine the effects of gastric impairment in pigs on the axial and peripheral skeletal system properties and to test the hypothesis that fundectomy-evoked osteopenia is related to disturbed gastric-hypothalamic-pituitary axis function. Forty-day-old male piglets were subjected to experimental fundectomy (FX group, n = 6) to induce osteopenia, while sham operation was performed in the controls (SHO group, n = 6). At the age of 8 months, serum samples were collected, and the animals were sacrificed to obtain lumbar vertebrae (L1-L6) and right humerus for analysis. Using quantitative computed tomography (QCT) and dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) methods, bone mineral density and bone mineral content of the vertebrae and humerus were measured. The compression and three-point bending tests were applied to determine mechanical properties of lumbar vertebrae and humerus, respectively. Furthermore, geometric properties of humerus were assessed. Serum concentrations of ghrelin, growth hormone (GH), insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), and selected macro- and microelements were also determined. Performed fundectomy decreased body weight in pigs by 66% compared with pair-fed sham operated pigs (P < 0.0001). Bone weight, bone mineral density, and bone mineral content of the lumbar vertebrae and humerus were significantly decreased in the fundectomized pigs (P < 0.01). Mechanical parameters of the lumbar spine and humerus were decreased after the fundectomy, as well. Serum concentrations of ghrelin, GH, and IGF-1 were lowered by 74.4%, 90.6%, and 54.6% in the fundectomized pigs, respectively (all P < 0.001). Moreover, the serum concentrations of calcium, magnesium, iron and copper in the fundectomized animals were significantly decreased by 15.5%, 45.3%, 26.7%, and 26.2%, respectively (P 相似文献

SYNOPSIS. Eimerians from 27 gray squirrels Sciurus carolinensis sampled in Waterloo County were studied. Two double-walled species, E. ontarioensis n. sp. which was piriform (36.8 × 23.5) and E. confusa Joseph which was subspherical (35.7 × 28.4), were described and compared with similar species from the genus Sciurus. Eimeria sp., ellipsoidal (24.9 × 14.4), from Ontario gray squirrels resembled E. ascotensis and E. neosciuri and was a new eimerian record from Ontario. The zoogeographic significance of E. ontarioensis n. sp. and E. sp. in North American gray squirrels is discussed.  相似文献

Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry was used to examine 54 patients with breast cancer. A clinical comparison group comprised 50 healthy women. All the examinees were aged 45 to 55 years. Bone mineral density was measured in the lumbar spine, proximal femur, and ultradistal antibrachium. The X-ray densitometric values of bone tissues in perimenopausal women with breast cancer were not found to be abnormal, which led to the conclusion that there were no significant bone metabolic disturbances. Along with this it was established that the women at this age had considerably reduced bone mineral density in the epimetaphyseal (ultradistal) forearm with evolving osteopenia. In this connection, it is expedient to identify an ultradistal portion of the antibrachium as an object of X-ray densitometric examination for the early diagnosis of impaired bone mineralization in women in the 45-to-55-year-old age group.  相似文献
