The bacterium Hydrogenomonas eutropha is under consideration for use in a regenerative life-support system for manned space missions of long duration. A 4-liter continuous culture unit containing the organism was operated for a period of 272 days under autotrophic environmental conditions. The best steady-state run achieved with this unit was observed over a 22-day time interval after 181 days of operation. During this time, the culture consumed an average of 22.9 +/- 2.0 ml of carbon dioxide per min, 38.1 +/- 3.3 ml of oxygen per min, and 128.5 +/- 10.6 ml of hydrogen per min. It required 18.7 +/- 1.2 liters of fresh nutrient medium per 24 hr to maintain a constant, preestablished cell population of 1.65 g (dry weight) per liter. The ratio of consumption of carbon dioxide, oxygen, and hydrogen varied from 1:1.2:4.5 to 1:1.9:6.6, with an average of 1:1.7:5.7. Based on these values, approximately 60 liters of the culture would be necessary to balance the gas exchange of one man.  相似文献

A single culture of Chlorella pyrenoidosa (700 ml) was grown continuously under uniform environmental conditions for a period of 11 months. During this time, the culture remained uncontaminated and its oxygen production, carbon dioxide consumption, and photosynthetic quotient (PQ = CO(2)/O(2)) were monitored on a 24-hr basis. The gas exchange characteristics of the alga were found to be extremely reliable; the average oxygen production was 1.21 +/- 0.03 ml per min, the carbon dioxide consumption was 1.09 +/- 0.03 ml per min, and the PQ was 0.90 +/- 0.01 when changes in both lamp intensity and instrument accuracy were taken into consideration. Such long-term dependability in the production of oxygen, consumption of carbon dioxide, and maintenance of a uniform PQ warrants the use of C. pyrenoidosa in a regenerative life support system for space travel.  相似文献

Arterial and venous blood gases were measured in the ovary of the Day-16-pregnant rat by a Van Slyke manometric technique. Concurrent observations of progestagen concentrations were also made to determine rates of hormone secretion. The oxygen consumption was 196.5 +/- 28.4 ml/min per kg ovarian tissue (mean +/- s.e.m., n = 8) which is amongst the highest recorded from any organ. Carbon dioxide production was 149.8 +/- 36.6 ml/min per kg ovarian tissue (n = 5) and the respiratory quotient was 0.756 +/- 0.023 (n = 5), indicating that lipids are the major energy substrate used by the ovary. The rates of progestagen secretion were 2.12 +/- 0.37 and 0.42 +/- 0.10 nmol/min per ovary for progesterone and 20 alpha-dihydroprogesterone, respectively, and were not related to oxygen consumption. Less than 1.5% of the oxygen consumed was used in the essential conversion of cholesterol to pregnenolone, the immediate precursor of progesterone.  相似文献

In an attempt to explore the acute maternal responses to exercise we measured oxygen consumption, uterine blood flow, and blood volume in 13 chronically catheterized pregnant sheep at rest and while exercising on a treadmill. With maximal exercise O2 consumption increased 5.6 times, from a resting value of 5.8 +/- 0.3 (SE) to 32.1 +/- 2.8 ml X min -1 X kg -1, cardiac output increased 2.7 times, from 149 +/- 8 to 404 +/- 32 ml X min -1 X kg -1, and arteriovenous oxygen content difference increased 2.1 times, from 3.9 +/- 0.2 to 8.0 +/- 0.4 ml X dl -1. Total uterine blood flow decreased from a mean resting value of 292 +/- 6 to 222 +/- 19 ml X min -1 X kg fetus -1 near exhaustion during prolonged (40 min) exercise at 70% maximal oxygen consumption. Maternal blood volume decreased 14% (P less than 0.01) from 67.5 +/- 3.7 to 57.8 +/- 3.6 ml X kg -1 during this exercise period, with a 20% decrease in plasma volume without a change in red cell volume. We conclude that uterine blood flow decreases during maternal exercise. However, hemoconcentration helps to maintain a relatively constant oxygen delivery to the uterus.  相似文献

The goals of the study were to determine if moderate weight loss in severely obese adults resulted in (i) reduction in apnea/hypopnea index (AHI), (ii) improved pharyngeal patency, (iii) reduced total body oxygen consumption (VO(2)) and carbon dioxide production (VCO(2)) during sleep, and (iv) improved sleep quality. The main outcome was the change in AHI from before to after weight loss. Fourteen severely obese (BMI > 40 kg/m(2)) patients (3 males, 11 females) completed a highly controlled weight reduction program which included 3 months of weight loss and 3 months of weight maintenance. At baseline and postweight loss, patients underwent pulmonary function testing, polysomnography, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to assess neck morphology. Weight decreased from 134 +/-6.6 kg to 118 +/- 6.1 kg (mean +/- s.e.m.; F = 113.763, P < 0.0001). There was a significant reduction in the AHI between baseline and postweight loss (subject, F = 11.11, P = 0.007). Moreover, patients with worse sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) at baseline had the greatest improvements in AHI (group, F = 9.00, P = 0.005). Reductions in VO(2) (285 +/- 12 to 234 +/-16 ml/min; F = 24.85, P < 0.0001) and VCO(2) (231 +/- 9 to 186 +/- 12 ml/min; F = 27.74, P < 0.0001) were also observed, and pulmonary function testing showed improvements in spirometry parameters. Sleep studies revealed improved minimum oxygen saturation (minSaO(2)) (83.4 +/- 61.9% to 89.1 +/- 1.2%; F = 7.59, P = 0.016), and mean SaO(2) (90.4 +/- 1.1% to 93.8 +/- 1.0%; F = 6.89, P = 0.022), and a significant increase in the number of arousals (8.1 +/- 1.4 at baseline, to 17.1 +/- 3.0 after weight loss; F = 18.13, P = 0.001). In severely obese patients, even moderate weight loss (approximately 10%) boasts substantial benefit in terms of the severity of SDB and sleep dynamics.  相似文献

Oxygen consumption (VO2) was measured during hypoventilation induced by moderate-sized flow-resistive loading in 12 preterm infants, and the results were compared with those obtained under basal conditions immediately before and after the loaded run, each of which lasted for 7-10 min. Loading was performed with a continuous flow-resistive load (inspiratory and expiratory), which was approximately threefold greater in magnitude than the intrinsic resistance of preterm infants. VO2, minute ventilation (VE), transcutaneous oxygen tension (PtCO2), and transcutaneous carbon dioxide tension (PtcCO2) were continuously monitored. Results revealed that VE decreased significantly with loading, from 336 +/- 103 to 231 +/- 58 (SD) ml.min-1.kg-1 (P less than 0.001), while returning to basal levels of 342 +/- 59 ml.min-1.kg-1 after discontinuation of the load. VO2 decreased from 7.2 +/- 1.2 to 5.9 +/- 0.9 ml.min-1.kg-1 with loading (P less than 0.001) and returned to 7.2 +/- 1.2 ml.min-1.kg-1 at the second basal measurement. PtcCO2 remained unchanged with loading, and PtcCO2 only increased from 39 +/- 8 to 41 +/- 9 Torr (P less than 0.05) with loading, while returning to 40 +/- 9 Torr at the second basal measurement. Results indicate a decrease in the metabolic rate and ventilation with loading, with relatively little increase in PtcCO2. These data can explain prior observations that minimal disturbances in oxygen and carbon dioxide tensions occur with hypoventilation during flow-resistive loading in neonates, although the precise mechanism for this reduction remains to be determined.  相似文献

In adults, the responses to acute haemorrhage vary greatly depending on the amount of blood lost. While many studies have documented fetal responses to mild haemorrhage, fetal responses to severe haemorrhage are not known. In this study we examined the effect of acute, severe haemorrhage in fetal lambs. Despite the severity of haemorrhage, we found that mean arterial blood pressure was restored within 2 min, and heart rate was restored within 30 min. This restoration of blood pressure and heart rate was facilitated by an increase in peripheral vascular resistance mediated in part by secretion of catecholamines and plasma renin. In addition, about 40% of the shed blood volume was restored within 30 min by fluid from either the fetal interstitium or placenta. The PO2 of umbilical venous blood increased from 33 +/- 9 mmHg to 49 +/- 17 mmHg 2 min post-haemorrhage, and to 47 +/- 15 mmHg 30 min post-haemorrhage. However, this increase was not sufficient to offset the fall in both haemoglobin concentration and umbilical-placental blood flow, so that oxygen delivery decreased from 21.1 +/- 5.5 ml/min per kg to 9.1 +/- 5.2 ml/min per kg 2 min post-haemorrhage, and 14.1 +/- 9.2 ml/min per kg 30 min post-haemorrhage. Because of this decrease in oxygen delivery, oxygen consumption fell and a metabolic acidemia ensued. Nevertheless, oxygen delivery to the heart and brain was maintained because hepatic vasoconstriction diverted more of the well oxygenated umbilical venous return through the ductus venosus. Although the fetus was able to tolerate acute loss of 40% of blood volume, larger volumes of haemorrhage resulted in fetal death.  相似文献

The authors measured oxygen consumption in a Czechoslovak population aged from 12 to 55 years. An abrupt increase was found between 12 and 18 years, when the maximum was reached (males 3.28, females 2.17 l/min), followed by a slower decrease to 55 years. Relative O2 consumption (per kg body weight) showed a continuous decrease from 12 years, when maximum values were recorded (49 ml/min . kg for boys, 46 ml/min . kg for girls), to 55 (33 ml/min . kg for males, 27 ml/min . kg for females). In the adult population (18--55 years), no differences were observed in the values at the various levels of submaximal loading. The pulse oxygen attained the maximum at 18 (males 16.8, females 11 ml).  相似文献

This study was performed to test the hypothesis that administration of recombinant human erythropoietin (rHuEpo) in humans increases maximal oxygen consumption by augmenting the maximal oxygen carrying capacity of blood. Systemic and leg oxygen delivery and oxygen uptake were studied during exercise in eight subjects before and after 13 wk of rHuEpo treatment and after isovolemic hemodilution to the same hemoglobin concentration observed before the start of rHuEpo administration. At peak exercise, leg oxygen delivery was increased from 1,777.0+/-102.0 ml/min before rHuEpo treatment to 2,079.8+/-120.7 ml/min after treatment. After hemodilution, oxygen delivery was decreased to the pretreatment value (1,710.3+/-138.1 ml/min). Fractional leg arterial oxygen extraction was unaffected at maximal exercise; hence, maximal leg oxygen uptake increased from 1,511.0+/-130.1 ml/min before treatment to 1,793.0+/-148.7 ml/min with rHuEpo and decreased after hemodilution to 1,428.0+/-111.6 ml/min. Pulmonary oxygen uptake at peak exercise increased from 3,950.0+/-160.7 before administration to 4,254.5+/-178.4 ml/min with rHuEpo and decreased to 4,059.0+/-161.1 ml/min with hemodilution (P=0.22, compared with values before rHuEpo treatment). Blood buffer capacity remained unaffected by rHuEpo treatment and hemodilution. The augmented hematocrit did not compromise peak cardiac output. In summary, in healthy humans, rHuEpo increases maximal oxygen consumption due to augmented systemic and muscular peak oxygen delivery.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted in 12 chronically-catheterized pregnant sheep to examine the effect of prolonged hypoxaemia secondary to the restriction of uterine blood flow on fetal oxygen consumption. Surgery was performed at 115 days gestation to place a teflon vascular occluder around the maternal common internal iliac artery and for insertion of vascular catheters. Following a 5-day recovery period, uterine blood flow was reduced in 6 animals for 24 hours and in 6 animals, the occluder was not adjusted. Fetal arterial PO2 decreased from 19.9 +/- 2.0 mmHg to 12.8 +/- 2.0 mmHg and 11.0 +/- 2.0 mmHg at 1 and 24 hours respectively in the experimental group and did not change the control group. Fetal pH decreased from 7.34 +/- 0.01 to 7.25 +/- 0.03 and 7.29 +/- 0.02 at 1 and 24 hours of hypoxaemia respectively. Fetal arterial lactate concentrations remained elevated throughout the experimental period with maximum concentrations of 6.6 +/- 2.1 mmol/l being present at 4 hours compared to 1.3 +/- 0.2 mmol/l during the control period. Umbilical blood flow increased from 186 +/- 19 ml/min/kg to 251 +/- 39 ml/min/kg at 1 h of hypoxaemia and returned to 191 +/- 21 ml/min/kg at 24 h. In association with the progressive fall in oxygen delivery to the fetus, oxygen extraction increased from 0.33 +/- 0.04 to 0.43 +/- 0.04 and 0.54 +/- 0.05 at 1 and 24 hours, respectively. Overall oxygen consumption by the fetus remained unchanged from control values.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Experiments were carried out to determine the role of nitric oxide in mediating autonomic and behavioral thermoregulatory control in rat pups on postnatal days 1-2, 5-6, and 10-11. For an experiment, each pup received a subcutaneous injection of vehicle, NG-nitro-D-arginine methyl ester (D-NAME; 100 mg/kg), or NG-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME; 100 mg/kg) before being placed in a metabolic chamber or in a thermocline with a linear temperature gradient of 23 to 43 degrees C. In the metabolic chamber, oxygen consumption and core temperature were measured as ambient temperature was decreased from 40 to 15 degrees C over a 60-min period. Decreasing ambient temperature elicited an increase in oxygen consumption in all age groups that received vehicle or d-NAME. The lower critical temperature and peak oxygen consumption upon exposure to cold after vehicle were 41 +/- 10 ml x kg(-1) x min(-1) at 30 degrees C, 43 +/- 12 ml x kg(-1) x min(-1) at 28 degrees C, and 55 +/- 11 ml x kg(-1) x min(-1) at 25 degrees C in the 1- to 2-, 5- to 6-, and 10- to 11-day-old pups, respectively. Administration of L-NAME abolished the oxygen consumption response to cold in the 1- to 2- and 5- to 6-day-old pups and significantly attenuated the oxygen consumption response to cold in the 10- to 11-day-old pups. Selected ambient temperature in the thermocline was not significantly affected by prior administration of D-NAME or L-NAME compared with vehicle. Thus our data provide evidence that the nitric oxide system plays a role in mediating autonomic but not behavioral thermoregulatory control in rat pups during early postnatal maturation.  相似文献

We investigated differences in walking (80 m/min) and running (147 m/min) economy [submaximal oxygen consumption (VO(2) (submax))] between adolescent girls (n = 13; age = 13.3 +/- 0.9 yr) and young women (n = 23; age = 21.0 +/- 1.5 yr). Subjects were matched for height (158.7 +/- 2.9 cm) and weight (52.1 +/- 3.0 kg). Anthropometric measures (height, weight, breadths, skinfolds) and preexercise oxygen consumption were obtained on all subjects before submaximal and maximal treadmill exercise. Anthropometric measures were similar between groups, as was maximal oxygen consumption (girls, 47.7 +/- 5.2; women, 47.5 +/- 5.7 ml. kg(-1). min(-1)). VO(2) (submax) was significantly greater (P < 0.0002) in girls compared with women during both walking (16.4 +/- 1.7 vs. 14.4 +/- 1. 1 ml. kg(-1). min(-1)) and running (38.1 +/- 3.7 vs. 33.9 +/- 2.4 ml. kg(-1). min(-1)). Preexercise oxygen consumption (4.4 vs. 3.9 ml. kg(-1). min(-1)) accounted for only a fraction of the differences found in exercise economy. Although heart rate and respiratory frequency were greater in the girls in both walking (118 +/- 11 vs. 104 +/- 12 beats/min and 31 +/- 3 vs. 25 +/- 4 breaths/min, respectively; P < 0.002) and running (180 +/- 15 vs. 163 +/- 17 beats/min and 47 +/- 11 vs. 38 +/- 8 breaths/min; P < 0.005), this did not likely account for a large part of the difference in VO(2) (submax) between groups.  相似文献

The oxygen production of a photosynthetic gas exchanger containing Chlorella pyrenoidosa (1% packed cell volume) was measured when various concentrations of carbon dioxide were present within the culture unit. The internal carbon dioxide concentrations were obtained by manipulating the entrance gas concentration and the flow rate. Carbon dioxide percentages were monitored by means of electrodes placed directly in the nutrient medium. The concentration of carbon dioxide in the nutrient medium which produced maximal photosynthesis was in the range of 1.5 to 2.5% by volume. Results were unaffected by either the level of carbon dioxide in the entrance gas or the rate of gas flow. Entrance gases containing 2% carbon dioxide flowing at 320 ml/min, 3% carbon dioxide at 135 ml/min, and 4% carbon dioxide at 55 ml/min yielded optimal carbon dioxide concentrations in the particular unit studied. By using carbon dioxide electrodes implanted directly in the gas exchanger to optimize the carbon dioxide concentration throughout the culture medium, it should be possible to design more efficient large-scale units.  相似文献

Electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) devices are being marketed as weight/ fat loss devices throughout the world. Commercially available stimulators have the ability to evoke muscle contractions that may affect caloric expenditure while the device is being used. The aim of this study was to test the effects of two different EMS devices (Abtronic and Feminique) on oxygen consumption at rest. Subjects arrived for testing after an overnight fast, had the devices fitted, and then positioned supine with expired air measured to determine oxygen consumption. After a 10-minute acclimation period, oxygen consumption was measured for 20 minutes with the device switched off (resting) then 20 minutes with the device switched on (stimulated). There were no significant differences (p > 0.05) in oxygen consumption between the resting and stimulated periods with either the Abtronic (mean +/- SD; resting, 3.40 +/- 0.44; stimulated, 3.45 +/- 0.53 ml of O(2).kg(-1).min(-1)) or the Feminique (resting, 3.73 +/- 0.45; stimulated, 3.75 +/- 0.46 ml of O(2).kg(-1).min(-1)). In summary, the EMS devices tested had no effect on oxygen consumption during muscle stimulation.  相似文献

We have recently reported a decrease in cardiac output in newborn dogs during respiratory alkalosis which is independent of changes in airway pressure. The present study was designed to characterize the mechanism responsible for this reduction in cardiac output. Twelve newborn coonhounds were anaesthetized with pentobarbital, paralyzed with pancuronium and hyperventilated to an arterial carbon dioxide tension (PaCO2) of 20 torr. Subsequent changes in PaCO2 were achieved by altering the FiCO2. Measurements were made after 30 min at either 40 or 20 torr PaCO2. The sequence of PaCO2 levels was randomized. Compared to normocarbia, respiratory alkalosis resulted in significantly decreased cardiac output (279 +/- 16 to 222 +/- 10 ml/min per kg, mean +/- SEM, P less than 0.001), stroke volume (1.60 +/- 0.10 to 1.24 +/- 0.06 ml/kg; P less than 0.001), maximum left ventricular dP/dt (1629 +/- 108 to 1406 +/- 79 mmHg/s, P less than 0.01) and left ventricular end diastolic pressure (3.9 +/- 0.4 to 2.9 +/- 0.3 mmHg; P less than 0.001). The decrease in cardiac output during respiratory alkalosis is manifest through a decrease in stroke volume, which is due, at least in part, to the decrease in left ventricular end diastolic pressure. The decrease in maximum left ventricular dP/dt is likely a reflection of the decrease in preload, however, a change in myocardial contractility cannot be excluded. We speculate the decrease in filling pressure may be due to an increase in venous capacitance.  相似文献

The mixed adrenergic agonist, epinephrine (10 micrograms/kg, i.v.), the beta-adrenergic receptor antagonist, propranolol (0.2 mg/kg, i.v.), or the alpha-adrenergic receptor antagonist, phenoxybenzamine (1 mg/kg, i.v.), were administered to sheep immediately before maximal incremental exercise. The effects of each of these drugs on hemoglobin (Hb) concentration during maximal exercise and on maximal exercise performance were investigated. The maximal incremental exercise protocol began at 4.0 km/h and 0% grade and finished at 5.6 km/h and 12% grade, with speed or grade increases every 1.5 minutes. Maximal exercise in control (untreated) sheep caused a mean 42% increase in hematocrit and 44% increase in Hb. This exercise-induced increase in Hb was unaffected by propranolol but was partially blocked by phenoxybenzamine. Epinephrine caused an immediate increase in Hb which abated during the early minutes of exercise and then subsequently increased toward the end of the exercise challenge. Maximum oxygen consumption (VO2) in control sheep was 47.6 +/- 6.7 ml/min per kilogram. Maximum VO2 after epinephrine, 51.6 +/- 8.7 ml/min per kilogram, was not significantly different from control. Maximum VO2 after propranolol and phenoxybenzamine, 35.4 +/- 15.3 and 40.8 +/- 8.2 ml/min per kilogram, respectively, were both significantly less than control exercise (P < 0.05).  相似文献

The primary purpose of the study was to test the hypothesis that reduced leptin signaling is necessary to elicit the cardiovascular and metabolic responses to fasting. Lean (Fa/?; normal leptin receptor; n = 7) and obese (fa/fa; mutated leptin receptor; n = 8) Zucker rats were instrumented with telemetry transmitters and housed in metabolic chambers at 23 degrees C (12:12-h light-dark cycle) for continuous (24 h) measurement of metabolic and cardiovascular variables. Before fasting, mean arterial pressure (MAP) was higher (MAP: obese = 103 +/- 3; lean = 94 +/- 1 mmHg), whereas oxygen consumption (VO(2): obese = 16.5 +/- 0.3; lean = 18.6 +/- 0.2 ml. min(-1). kg(-0.75)) was lower in obese Zucker rats compared with their lean controls. Two days of fasting had no effect on MAP in either lean or obese Zucker rats, whereas VO(2) (obese = -3.1 +/- 0.3; lean = -2.9 +/- 0.1 ml. min(-1). kg(-0.75)) and heart rate (HR: obese = -56 +/- 4; lean = -42 +/- 4 beats/min) were decreased markedly in both groups. Fasting increased HR variability both in lean (+1.8 +/- 0.4 ms) and obese (+2.6 +/- 0.3 ms) Zucker rats. After a 6-day period of ad libitum refeeding, when all parameters had returned to near baseline levels, the cardiovascular and metabolic responses to 2 days of thermoneutrality (ambient temperature 29 degrees C) were determined. Thermoneutrality reduced VO(2) (obese = -2.4 +/- 0.2; lean = -3.3 +/- 0.2 ml. min(-1). kg(-0.75)), HR (obese = -46 +/- 5; lean = -55 +/- 4 beats/min), and MAP (obese = -13 +/- 6; lean = -10 +/- 1 mmHg) similarly in lean and obese Zucker rats. The results indicate that the cardiovascular and metabolic responses to fasting and thermoneutrality are conserved in Zucker rats and suggest that intact leptin signaling may not be requisite for the metabolic and cardiovascular responses to reduced energy intake.  相似文献

Capture and anesthesia with medetomidine-ketamine were evaluated in free-ranging wolverines (Gulo gulo) immobilized for marking with radiocollars or intraperitoneal radiotransmitters in Norrbotten, Sweden, during early June 2004 and 2005. Twelve juvenile wolverines were captured by hand and injected with 0.14 +/- 0.03 mg/kg (mean +/- SD) medetomidine and 7.5 +/- 2.0 mg/kg ketamine. Twelve adult wolverines were darted from a helicopter or the ground, or captured by hand. Adults received 0.37 +/- 0.06 mg/kg medetomidine and 9.4 +/- 1.4 mg/kg ketamine. Arterial blood samples were collected between 15 min and 30 min and between 45 min and 60 min after drug administration and immediately analyzed for selected hematologic and plasma variables. Hyperthermia was recorded initially in one juvenile wolverine and 11 adults. Rectal temperature, heart rate, and lactate decreased significantly during anesthesia, whereas hemoglobin oxygen saturation, pH, partial pressure of arterial carbon dioxide, and base excess increased. Adult wolverines darted from a helicopter had a significantly higher rectal temperature, higher glucose and hematocrit values, and a lower heart rate than juveniles captured by hand. Impaired arterial oxygenation was evident in all wolverines. This study provides baseline data on physiologic variables in adult and juvenile wolverines captured with different methods and anesthetized with medetomidine-ketamine.  相似文献

The mass specific rates of oxygen consumption (M (O(2)) M(b)(-1)), ammonia excretion (M (NH(4)-N) M(b)(-1)) and carbon dioxide production (M (CO(2)) M(b)(-1)) were measured after 7, 14 and 21 days exposure of adult Potamonautes warreni to a sublethal concentration of 1.0 mg Cu l(-1) (15.75 micromol l(-1)). Under control (non-copper-exposed) conditions M (O(2)) M(b)(-1) was 35.7+/-8.5 micromol kg(-1)min(-1) (mean+/-S.D.), M (NH(4)-N) M(b)(-1) 2.92+/-0.26 micromol kg(-1)min(-1) and M (CO(2)) M(b)(-1) 25.6+/-9.0 micromol kg(-1)min(-1). The oxygen:nitrogen (O:N) ratio and respiratory quotient (RQ) were 24.5+/-3.0 and 0.80+/-0.06, respectively. M (O(2)) M(b)(-1) of copper-exposed crabs showed a significant increase after 7 and 14 days, but decreased significantly by 40% after 21 days. From the increased O:N ratio and RQ below 0.7, it is clear that crabs exposed to 1 mg Cul(-1) metabolize lipids during the entire 21-day exposure period. Free fatty acids in the midgut gland were determined by GC-MS, and showed increases of up to 600% in some C14 to C18 fatty acids. It is proposed that the excess lipids inhibit the pyruvate dehydrogenase complex, leading to the acceleration of the gluco- and glyco-neogenic pathways. Increased glyconeogenesis results in elevated glycogen concentrations in all tissues after 21 days. Experiments on acutely exposed P. warreni show increased incorporation of 14C-labelled lactate into glycogen.  相似文献

The present investigation was undertaken to determine the content of ACTH, glucose and lactate in plasma of 4 pigs (body weight 82--118 kg) during a circadian period and during an insulin hypoglycemia test using 1 IU/kg in 3 pigs (body weight 96--118 kg) and 4 pigs (body weight 20--30 kg). The plasma ACTH level at rest was 57 +/- 27 pg/ml (Mean +/- SE) for all samples in all animals during a circadian period. Significant diurnal changes were not observed. During insulin-induced hypoglycaemia plasma ACTH rose from a mean (+/- SE) basal level of 35 +/- 15 to a maximum of 673 +/- 100 pg/ml at 60 min in heavier pigs and in lighter pigs to 395 +/- 153 at 30 min and 403 +/- 145 pg/ml at 120 min. Initial ACTH responses were evident 30 min (heavier pigs) and between 0 and 15 min (lighter pigs) after insulin administration. Plasma glucose decreased from a mean (+/- SE) basal level of 80 +/- 10 to a minimum of 6 +/- 1 mg/100 ml at 60 min (heavier pigs) and from 88 +/- 3 to 16 +/- 4 mg/100 ml at 60 min (lighter pigs). After its minimum level the glucose concentration showed a slower increment in the heavier pigs as compared to lighter animals. Plasma lactate rose from a mean (+/- SE) basal level of 19 +/- 10 to a maximum of 76 +/- 42 mg/100 ml at 120 min (heavier pigs) and from 12 +/- 3 to 37 +/- 16 mg/100 ml at 150 min (lighter group). In accordance with the changes in the blood plasma levels of ACTH, glucose and lactate, the clinical symptoms of hypoglycaemia in heavier pigs were more intensive.  相似文献
