 In this paper we derive and analyze a discrete version of Rosenzweig's (Am. Nat. 1973) food-chain model. We provide substantial analytical and numerical evidence for the general dynamical patterns of food chains predicted by De Feo and Rinaldi (Am. Nat. 1997) remaining largely unaffected by this discretization. Our theoretical analysis gives rise to a classification of the parameter space into various regions describing distinct governing dynamical behaviors. Predator abundance has a local optimum at the edge of chaos.  The operation of a hierarchical competitive network model (VisNet) of invariance learning in the visual system is investigated to determine how this class of architecture can solve problems that require the spatial binding of features. First, we show that VisNet neurons can be trained to provide transform-invariant discriminative responses to stimuli which are composed of the same basic alphabet of features, where no single stimulus contains a unique feature not shared by any other stimulus. The investigation shows that the network can discriminate stimuli consisting of sets of features which are subsets or supersets of each other. Second, a key feature-binding issue we address is how invariant representations of low-order combinations of features in the early layers of the visual system are able to uniquely specify the correct spatial arrangement of features in the overall stimulus and ensure correct stimulus identification in the output layer. We show that output layer neurons can learn new stimuli if the lower layers are trained solely through exposure to simpler feature combinations from which the new stimuli are composed. Moreover, we show that after training on the low-order feature combinations which are common to many objects, this architecture can – after training with a whole stimulus in some locations – generalise correctly to the same stimulus when it is shown in a new location. We conclude that this type of hierarchical model can solve feature-binding problems to produce correct invariant identification of whole stimuli. A temperature-sensitive mutant of Salmonella typhimurium was isolated earlier after transposon mutagenesis with Tn10d Tet. The mutant D220 grows well at 28 °C but has a lower growth rate and forms filaments at 37 °C. Transposon-flanking fragments of mutant D220 DNA were cloned and sequenced. The transposon was inserted in the dam gene between positions 803 and 804 (assigned allele number: dam-231 : : Tn10d Tet) and resulted in a predicted ten-amino-acid-shorter Dam protein. The insertion created a stop codon that led to a truncated Dam protein with a temperature-sensitive phenotype. The insertion dam-231 : : Tn10d Tet resulted in a dam“leaky” phenotype since methylated and unmethylated adenines in GATC sequences were present. In addition, the dam-231 : : Tn10d Tet insertion rendered dam mutants temperature-sensitive for growth depending upon the genetic background of the S. typhimurium strain. The wild-type dam gene of S. typhimurium exhibited 82% identity with the Escherichia coli dam gene.  相似文献

 Although the extrapolation of past perceptual history into the immediate and distant future is a fundamental phenomenon in everyday life, the underlying processing mechanisms are not well understood. A network model consisting of interacting excitatory and inhibitory cell populations coding for stimulus position is used to study the neuronal population response to a continuously moving stimulus. An adaptation mechanism is proposed that offers the possibility to control and modulate motion-induced extrapolation without changing the spatial interaction structure within the network. Using an occluder paradigm, functional advantages of an internally generated model of a moving stimulus are discussed. It is shown that the integration of such a model in processing leads to a faster and more reliable recognition of the input stream and allows for object permanence following occlusion. The modeling results are discussed in relation to recent experimental findings that show motion-induced extrapolation.  The genome of amphioxus includes AmphiNk2-2, the first gene of the NK2 homeobox class to be demonstrated in any invertebrate deuterostome. AmphiNk2-2 encodes a protein with a TN domain, homeodomain, and NK2-specific domain; on the basis of amino acid identities in these conserved regions, AmphiNk2-2 is a homolog of Drosophila vnd and vertebrate Nkx2–2. During amphioxus development, expression of Amph- iNk2-2 is first detected ventrally in the endoderm of late gastrulae. In neurulae, endodermal expression divides into three domains (the pharynx, midgut, and hindgut), and neural expression commences in two longitudinal bands of cells in the anterior neural tube. These neural tube cells occupy a ventrolateral position on either side of the cerebral vesicle (the probable homolog of the vertebrate diencephalic forebrain). The dynamic expression patterns of AmphiNkx2-2 suggest successive roles, first in regionalizing the endoderm and nervous system and later during differentiation of specific cell types in the gut (possibly peptide endocrine cells) and brain (possibly including axon outgrowth and guidance).  To understand the role of microtubules in the regulation of cell elongation, we characterized microtubule patterns in fass, a cell shape mutant of Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh. Examining microtubule patterns via immunocytochemistry, we found that fass cells were able to organize their microtubules into mitotic spindles and phragmoplasts. During interphase or preprophase, fass cells had cortical microtubules, verified by transmission electron microscopy, but these microtubules were not organized into the cortical array or preprophase band. Using chromatin condensation and tubulin localization on the nuclear envelope as preprophase stage markers, we found that although fass cells lacked the preprophase band and cortical array, their cell division cycle appeared normal. To pinpoint the defect in fass cells, we delineated the sequential events leading to cortical array formation in Arabidopsis cells and found that fass cells initiated and recolonized cortical microtubules in the same manner as wild-type cells, but failed to order them into the cortical array. Taken together, these results suggest fass cells are impaired in a component of the microtubule organizing center(s) required for the proper ordering of cortical microtubules at the plasma membrane.  An intracellular recording made from the retinal luminosity horizontal cell (LHC) demonstrated that repetitive red flashes enhanced the cell's responsiveness to red stimulus and depressed its responsiveness to green stimulus and that repetitive green flashes suppressed the cell's red response but produced little change in its green response. Based on the idea that the spectral plasticity of LHCs may reflect some synaptic efficacy changes between the LHC and various cones, a self-organizing system is proposed to investigate the possible manner of information processing and storage within the synapses. The results of model analysis suggest that the stimulus-pattern-related spectral plasticity is attributable to the excitatory interaction within the same kinds of synapses and the inhibitory interaction between different kinds of synapses. This system is able to encode and store the history of signal transmission in a graded and cumulative fashion. Pigeons were trained to discriminate the kappa-opioid agonist bremazocine (BREM) or the mu-opioid agonist fentanyl (FENT) from water. During tests of stimulus substitution, FENT and BREM failed to substitute for each other. The (-)-isomers of cyclazocine, pentazocine and ketocyclazocine substituted for the FENT but not the BREM stimulus. The (+)-isomers of these compounds, as well as the isomers of nallylnormetazocine, failed to substitute for either the FENT or BREM stimulus. In FENT- and BREM-trained pigeons, the (-)-isomers of cyclazocine, pentazocine, nallylnormetazocine and ketocyclazocine were more potent than their respective(+)-isomers in decreasing rates of responding. These results indicate that in the pigeon there is an isomeric separation of the discriminative stimulus properties of cyclazocine, pentazocine and ketocyclazocine and that the FENT-like stimulus effects of these drugs reside in their (-)-isomers. In addition, the present findings establish further that the classification of the discriminative stimulus effects of mu and kappa opioid compounds in the pigeon differ from those in rat and monkey.  相似文献

The two freshwater sponges Ephydatia fluviatilis and Ephydatia mülleri belong to the widespread Spongillidae family. Their morphological tracts are very similar and can be distinguished mainly on the basis of their gemmuloscleres. However, when gemmules are absent it is essential to have an unambiguous species attribution for a population genetic study based on fresh tissues and historical collections. This article reports a simple Polymerase Chain Reaction-Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) analysis, applied to DNA extracted from both gemmules and fresh tissues in order to discriminate between the two congeneric E. fluviatilis and E. mülleri. Such a biomolecular method is based on the discriminative enzymes’ digestion of each of the three amplified fragments 5.8S-ITS2-28S, D3 domain of the 28S subunit and COI. Two restriction enzymes were tested for a 620–642 bp fragment of 5.8S-ITS2-28S and for a 342 bp fragment of the D3 domain of the 28S, one restriction enzyme was tested for a 681 bp fragment codifying for COI. Obtained digestion patterns were diagnostic for each of the two species, providing a relatively simple, fast and cheap method for species attribution compared to sequencing. Handling editor: C. The effect of additional information on image shape classification was studied in seven-year-old children. The classified images were either dissimilar in the axis ratio of the basic oval (F) or had an additional element (F + E). In one series of experiments, the additional element was oriented towards a longer axis of the oval, which was a discriminative sign (situation 1, matching); in another series it was rotated by 90° (situation 2, mismatching). The analysis of the successful image classification in series 1 and 2 showed that images with an additional element that mismatches a discriminative sign were classified as being significantly worse than those with matching information. The analysis of the event-related potentials (ERP) from different cortical areas revealed a specific role of the frontal and temporo-parieto-occipital cortical areas in the classification of additional sensory information. The analysis of additional matching information (series 1) was associated with the right hemisphere and evidenced by an increase in N200 wave amplitude in the frontal area and by a negative shift during the development of a late positive complex (250–550 ms) in the temporo-parieto-occipital area. The analysis of additional information mismatching a discriminative sign (series 2) was associated with the left hemisphere and evidenced by an early positive component (P100) in the frontal area, negative components N200–N250, and a further negative shift during the development of late positive complex in the temporo-parieto-occipital area.  相似文献

 The Gobi Steppe of Mongolia supports numerous temporary water bodies of various sizes. No accurate information is available on the factors that shape the structure of their fauna, partly because they have been regarded as less important environments than permanent lakes. This study represents the first comprehensive survey of the Recent large branchiopod fauna of Mongolia, which consists of at least 16 species. This faunal composition may have resulted from colonization through diversification in East Asia during the Cretaceous period of the Mesozoic era (ca. 135–65 My ago), and to some extent from immigration from Europe into Asia during the Cenozoic era. The distribution patterns of some geologically ancient taxa most probably reflect the ancient hydrosphere. Five new records from Mongolia are presented: three species of Anos-traca, Branchinectella media (Schmankewitsch, 1873), Chirocephalus mongolianus Uéno, 1940, and Chirocephalus sp. (undescribed); one Spinicaudata, Cyzicus sp. (undescribed); and one Laevicaudata, Lynceus sp. (undescribed). The three undescribed species are localized-endemic to the Gobi Steppe. The purpose of this paper is to draw attention to some of the scientific interest and value of ephemeral aquatic habitats in Mongolia, and to argue that hydrobiologists, water resource managers, and conservationists need to take greater interest in temporary habitats.  Neural oscillation is one of the most extensively investigated topics of artificial neural networks. Scientific approaches to the functionalities of both natural and artificial intelligences are strongly related to mechanisms underlying oscillatory activities. This paper concerns itself with the assumption of the existence of central pattern generators (CPGs), which are the plausible neural architectures with oscillatory capabilities, and presents a discrete and generalized approach to the functionality of locomotor CPGs of legged animals. Based on scheduling by multiple edge reversal (SMER), a primitive and deterministic distributed algorithm, it is shown how oscillatory building block (OBB) modules can be created and, hence, how OBB-based networks can be formulated as asymmetric Hopfield-like neural networks for the generation of complex coordinated rhythmic patterns observed among pairs of biological motor neurons working during different gait patterns. It is also shown that the resulting Hopfield-like network possesses the property of reproducing the whole spectrum of different gaits intrinsic to the target locomotor CPGs. Although the new approach is not restricted to the understanding of the neurolocomotor system of any particular animal, hexapodal and quadrupedal gait patterns are chosen as illustrations given the wide interest expressed by the ongoing research in the area. Rats trained to discriminate 3.0 mg/kg of diazepam from saline in a two-lever operant choice task were challenged with the racemic mixture and optical isomers of 3- methylflunitrazepam or pentobarbital. Generalization of the diazepam stimulus was found to occur to (+/-)- and S(+)-3- methylflunitrazepam , with the S(+)-isomer being twice as active as the racemate. Diazepam stimulus generalization also occurred to (+/-)-, S(-)-, and R(+)-pentobarbital, with the S(-)-isomer being approximately twice as active as (+/-)- or R(+)-pentobarbital. In addition, the administration of the imidazobenzodiazepine Ro 15-1788, a selective benzodiazepine receptor antagonist, prior to benzodiazepine or barbiturate administration competitively antagonized the discriminative stimulus properties of the benzodiazepines but was completely ineffective in attenuating the discriminative stimulus effect of the barbiturates. The results of this study suggest that benzodiazepines exert their stimulus effects by a stereoselective interaction at a benzodiazepine receptor and that stereochemical factors are important in evaluating the stimulus properties of benzodiazepines or barbiturates.  相似文献

Using a standard two-lever drug discrimination procedure, twelve rats were trained to discriminate 1.0 mg/kg of the serotonin (5-HT) agonist TFMPP from saline. Once trained, the animals displayed a dose-related decrease in discriminative performance upon administration of lower doses of TFMPP. Tests of stimulus generalization were performed using the purported 5-HT agonist RU-24, 969 and 1-(2,5-dimethoxy-4-methylphenyl)-2-aminopropane (DOM). While TFMPP produced stimulus effects similar to those of RU-24,969, these effects seem to be dissimilar to those of DOM. The results of the present study suggest that the discriminative stimulus effects of TFMPP may involve a 5-HT1-related mechanism.  相似文献

A sample of seven-year-old children was divided into reflective and impulsive groups using the matching familiar figures test (MFFT). Event-related potentials of different regions of the cerebral cortex were studied in children from these groups performing classification of visual-object shapes on the basis of only one discriminative feature or with the use of additional information. Comparison of the success of visual-stimulus identification in reflective and impulsive children under the conditions of alternative choice (MFFT) and classification according to a specified discriminative feature demonstrates differences in the mechanisms of both selection and analysis of the sensory characters of the stimulus. When the shape of a visual object is classified according to the discriminative feature, the initial stages of analysis in impulsive children are accompanied by the emergence of wave N80 in the left hemisphere, which may reflect the higher rate of detection of the discriminative feature by these children. Impulsive children are also characterized by an earlier development and a higher amplitude of component P300 compared to reflective children. In the latter, waves N250 and N350, indicating continuing information processing, are superposed on this positive component. If the picture presented to children contains an element consistent with the discriminative feature, the N350 amplitude in the right temporo-parieto-occipital region and the negative shift corresponding to the N350 wave in the left temporo-parieto-occipital region are increased in reflective and impulsive children, respectively.  Neurons of the rat spinal cord were stained using the Golgi impregnation method. Successfully impregnated neurons from laminae II, III, and VI were subjected to fractal and nonfractal analyses. Fractal analysis was performed using length-related techniques. Since an application of fractal methods to the analysis of dendrite arbor structures requires caution, we adopted as appropriate a nonfractal method proposing a generalized power-law model with two main nonfractal parameters: (i) the anfractuosity, characterizing the degree of dendritic deviation from straight lines; and (ii) an estimate of the total length of arbor dendrites. The anfractuosity can distinguish between two sets of drawings where the fractal methods failed. We also redefine some basic concepts of fractal geometry, present the ruler-counting method, and propose a new definition of fractal dimension. The surface-feeding fish Aplocheilus lineatus uses its cephalic lateral line to detect water surface waves caused by prey insects. The ability of Aplocheilus to discriminate between surface waves with aid of the lateral line system was tested by go/no-go conditioning. Our results show that Aplocheilus can distinguish between single-frequency surface wave stimuli with equal velocity or equal acceleration amplitudes which differ only in frequency. Frequency difference limens were about 15%, i.e. fish distinguished a 20-Hz wave stimulus from a 23-Hz stimulus in 100% of the trials. Aplocheilus can also discriminate between pure sine-wave stimuli and sine waves which show abrupt frequency changes. In contrast, fish were unable to distinguish amplitude-modulated wave stimuli (carrier frequency 20, 40 and 60 Hz, modulation frequency 10 and 20 Hz) from pure sine waves of the same frequency, even if amplitude modulation depth was 80%.  Morphological and electrophoretic data were studied to examine species delimitation, patterns of morphological and genetic variation in three Korean Hepatica including two endemics, H.␣maxima and H. insularis. Based on a phenogram using 15 morphological characters, taxa were distinct; it was consistent with the phenogram based on genetic distance. In the enzyme electrophoresis study, the genetic identities suggested that three taxa were genetically divergent enough to be recognized as different species, falling within the range expected␣for congeners. The genetic identity between H.␣asiatica and H. insularis was higher than the values between these two taxa and H.␣maxima, a restricted endemic of Ulleung Island. The least genetic variation was found in H. maxima and the greatest in widespread H. asiatica. These data are consistent with theoretical expectations that small populations are more likely to be genetically depauperate. A remarkable new genus and two new species of Mantispidae (Neuroptera) are described from the Oriental region. Allomantispa Liu, Wu, Winterton & Ohl gen.n. , currently including A. tibetana Liu, Wu & Winterton sp.n. and A. mirimaculata Liu & Ohl sp.n. The new genus is placed in the subfamily Drepanicinae based on a series of morphological characteristics and on the results of total evidence phylogenetic analyses. Bayesian and Parsimony analyses were undertaken using three gene loci (CAD, 16S rDNA and COI) combined with 74 morphological characters from living and fossil exemplars of Mantispidae (17 genera), Rhachiberothidae (two genera) and Berothidae (five genera), with outgroup taxa from Dilaridae and Osmylidae. The resultant phylogeny presented here recovered a monophyletic Mantispidae with ?Mesomantispinae sister to the rest of the family. Relationships among Mantispidae, Rhachiberothidae and Berothidae support Rhachiberothidae as a separate family sister to Mantispidae. Within Mantispidae, Drepanicinae are a monophyletic clade sister to Calomantispinae and Mantispinae. In a combined analysis, Allomantispa gen.n. was recovered in a clade comprising Ditaxis McLachlan from Australia, and two fossil genera from the Palaearctic, ?Promantispa Panfilov (Kazakhstan; late Jurassic) and ?Liassochrysa Ansorge & Schlüter (Germany; Jurassic), suggesting a highly disjunct and relictual distribution for the family.  Well-preserved, Holocene coral reefs provide the opportunity to discriminate between models of intrinsically driven succession and extrinsically driven species replacement, especially when paleontological patterns can be combined with ecological observations of the underlying mechanisms. Rhomboid shoals in the central shelf lagoon of the Belizean Barrier Reef experienced a recent and dramatic change in community composition. Agaricia tenuifolia replaced Acropora cervicornis as the dominant coral species at 3–15 m depth along the flanks of the reefs. We tested the hypothesis that shallowing upward caused this shift in dominance. A core extracted from 0.5 m water depth on one of the shoals, Channel Cay, revealed a shallowing-upward shift in dominance from Acropora to Porites divaricata. This successional sequence was quite different from the Acropora-to-Agaricia transition observed in four cores from 6–11 m water depth. Ecological observations showed that Agaricia became the dominant at ≥3 m depth after Acropora populations were decimated by a regional outbreak of white-band disease. The Acropora-to-Agaricia transition was clearly a case of extrinsically driven species replacement rather than an intrinsically driven, successional, shallowing-upward sequence.
