A brief sketch is presented of Vavilov's career, his main contributions to science and personal qualities. The imporatnce of his work in genetics, agro-ecology, plant breeding, the experimental taxonomy of crop plants and genetic resources conservation is also emphasized.

A selection of pages is presented from an unpublished book layout of photographs made by John Collier Jr. and Mary E.T. Collier in Peru during the 1950s, with a brief introduction and afterword by Malcolm Collier.

Three cases of Cryptococcus neoformans var. gattii infection in AIDS patients observed in Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil) are related. A brief comment on the epidemiology of cryptococcosis in Brazil is also made.     

Montonepa gen.n. from India with Notes on the Genus Borborophyes Stål (Hemiptera-Heteroptera, Nepidae)

A new genus is erected for Borborophyes erutus Montandon using eye shape, metathoracic wing venation and antennal segmentation to distinguish Montonepa gen.n. from Borborophyes. A brief discussion is given on the value of these characters in relation to the closely related genus Lar:otrephes Stål.     

Chaos in biology.

This paper presents a brief and pedagogical account of the relevance of chaos theory in biology. A few caveats to avoid misleading interpretations are underlined, for instance the required determinism and consistency of the experimental time series. The selective advantage offered by a properly controlled chaotic dynamics is discussed on the examples of cardiac rhythm and brain dynamics.

Periodic solutions of population models in a periodically fluctuating environment.

A periodically fluctuating environment is assumed in a population-modeling process that generates nonautonomous difference equations. The existence and uniqueness of periodic solutions are studied. A sufficient condition for existence and a necessary condition for uniqueness are obtained. Stability of the periodic solutions is investigated. Several numerical examples are given to illustrate the basic results, and a brief discussion is presented.
