Background  

Evolution of parasite traits is inextricably linked to their hosts. For instance one common definition of parasite virulence is the reduction in host fitness due to infection. Thus, traits of infection must be viewed in both protagonists and may be under shared genetic and physiological control. We investigated these questions on the oomycete Hyaloperonospora arabidopsis (= parasitica), a natural pathogen of the Brassicaceae Arabidopsis thaliana.  相似文献

Evolutionary models of human reproduction argue that variation in fertility can be understood as the local optimization of a life-history trade-off between offspring quantity and ‘quality’. Child survival is a fundamental dimension of quality in these models as early-life mortality represents a crucial selective bottleneck in human evolution. This perspective is well-rehearsed, but current literature presents mixed evidence for a trade-off between fertility and child survival, and little empirical ground to evaluate how socioecological and individual characteristics influence the benefits of fertility limitation. By compiling demographic survey data, we demonstrate robust negative relationships between fertility and child survival across 27 sub-Saharan African countries. Our analyses suggest this relationship is primarily accounted for by offspring competition for parental investment, rather than by reverse causal mechanisms. We also find that the trade-off increases in relative magnitude as national mortality declines and maternal somatic (height) and extrasomatic (education) capital increase. This supports the idea that socioeconomic development, and associated reductions in extrinsic child mortality, favour reduced fertility by increasing the relative returns to parental investment. Observed fertility, however, falls considerably short of predicted optima for maximizing total offspring survivorship, strongly suggesting that additional unmeasured costs of reproduction ultimately constrain the evolution of human family size.  相似文献

The theory of trade-off between starvation and predation risks predicts a decrease in body mass in order to improve flight performance when facing high predation risk. To date, this trade-off has mainly been validated in passerines, birds that store limited body reserves for short-term use. In the largest avian species in which the trade-off has been investigated (the mallard, Anas platyrhynchos), the slope of the relationship between mass and flight performance was steeper in proportion to lean body mass than in passerines. In order to verify whether the same case can be applied to other birds with large body reserves, we analyzed the response to this trade-off in two other duck species, the common teal (Anas crecca) and the tufted duck (Aythya fuligula). Predation risk was simulated by disturbing birds. Ducks within disturbed groups were compared to non-disturbed control birds. In disturbed groups, both species showed a much greater decrease in food intake and body mass during the period of simulated high risk than those observed in the control group. This loss of body mass allows reaching a more favourable wing loading and increases power for flight, hence enhancing flight performances and reducing predation risk. Moreover, body mass loss and power margin gain in both species were higher than in passerines, as observed in mallards. Our results suggest that the starvation-predation risk trade-off is one of the major life history traits underlying body mass adjustments, and these findings can be generalized to all birds facing predation. Additionally, the response magnitude seems to be influenced by the strategy of body reserve management.  相似文献

We introduce the bi-objective emissions disturbance traveling salesman problem (BEDTSP), which aims at minimizing carbon dioxide emissions (\(\hbox {CO}_2\)) as well as disturbance to urban neighborhoods, when planning the tour of a single vehicle delivering goods to customers. Although there exist recent studies on minimizing emissions, we are not aware of any work on minimizing disturbance. We develop four different mathematical models for the BEDTSP. We also develop several data generation strategies for minimizing disturbance. These strategies consider optional nodes, thus allowing detours that yield less disturbance but also possibly more emissions. All models and strategies are compared in an extensive computational study. Experimental results allow us to derive clear guidelines for which model and data generation strategy to use in which context. Following these guidelines, we conduct a case study for the city of Vienna.  相似文献

为探讨全寄生植物南方菟丝子(Cuscuta australis)防治入侵植物空心莲子草(Alternanthera philoxeroides)的可行性,以二者野外天然生长的种群为研究对象,分析南方菟丝子寄生对空心莲子草生长及防御的影响,阐明空心莲子草在受到寄生胁迫时如何权衡自身生长与防御的关系,进而发展出一套应对南方菟丝子寄生的生长-防御策略。结果显示:(1)南方菟丝子寄生显著改变空心莲子草茎的形态,茎直径和平均节间长均增加,茎直径变化极显著(P0.01);(2)南方菟丝子寄生显著减少空心莲子草叶片数,但同时显著增加后者茎的分枝数,而茎上的节是潜在的无性繁殖体,故有利于空心莲子草的克隆繁殖;此外,南方菟丝子寄生显著降低了空心莲子草的根、茎、叶生物量和总生物量,抑制空心莲子草的生长;(3)南方菟丝子寄生显著增加空心莲子草茎的单宁、总酚、三萜皂苷含量,增强其防御能力;(4)南方菟丝子寄生的空心莲子草的生物量与茎部木质素、三萜皂苷、单宁和总酚含量均呈现显著负相关性(P0.01),对照组则不存在相关性;且寄生组较对照组相比,生物量的相对百分比显著低于对照组(P0.01),而用于防御的次生代谢产物总含量的相对百分比显著高于对照组(P0.01)。以上结果表明,受到南方菟丝子寄生胁迫后,空心莲子草改变自身的生长-防御策略,减少营养生长投入而将更多的资源投向克隆繁殖,同时增强对"防御"物质的投入,增强其防御能力,以利于后代生存和繁衍。  相似文献

Male guppies Poecilia reticulata court almost continuously and often indulge in sneaky mating attempts. Female guppies, on the other hand, devote much of their time to foraging. This paper demonstrates that both sexes reduce their feeding rate in mixed-sex groups relative to single sex ones and suggests that the decrease is less pronounced for females than for males. Thus males make feeding and mating decisions that are dependent on hunger while female foraging behaviour is constrained by sexual harassment. The observed sex differences in behaviour are a consequence of asymmetrical mating costs in males and females.  相似文献

Most models of virulence evolution assume that a parasite cannot raise its transmission rate without causing more harm to its host. However, the existence of such trade-off relationships has recently been challenged. Here, we study how a trade-off can emerge from a model that explicitly incorporates within-host dynamics. We find that the existence and the convexity of the trade-off are robust, which implies a definite level of evolutionarily stable virulence (ESV) for the parasite. However, we also show that the dependence of the ESV on parameter values may be very strong. One possible consequence of this sensitivity is that relationships between transmission and virulence observed across populations need not conform to the patterns expected on the basis of a common (fixed) trade-off. We discuss possible experiments and implications of our results for the development of virulence management strategies.  相似文献

In unpredictably varying environments, strategies that have a reduced variance in fitness can invade a population consisting of individuals that on average do better. Such strategies 'hedge their evolutionary bets' against the variability of the environment. The idea of bet-hedging arises from the fact that appropriate measure of long-term fitness is sensitive to variance, leading to the potential for strategies with a reduced mean fitness to invade and increase in frequency. Our aim is to review the conceptual foundation of bet-hedging as a mechanism that influences short- and long-term evolutionary processes. We do so by presenting a general model showing how evolutionary changes are affected by variance in fitness and how genotypic variance in fitness can be separated into variance in fitness at the level of the individuals and correlations in fitness among them. By breaking down genotypic fitness variance in this way the traditional divisions between conservative and diversified strategies are more easily intuited, and it is also shown that this division can be considered a false dichotomy, and is better viewed as two extreme points on a continuum. The model also sheds light on the ideas of within- and between-generation bet-hedging, which can also be generalized to be seen as two ends of a different continuum. We use a simple example to illustrate the virtues of our general model, as well as discuss the implications for systems where bet-hedging has been invoked as an explanation.  相似文献

Summary There is widespread uncertainty about the nature and role of morphological plasticity in resource competition in plant communities. We have assayed the foraging characteristics of leaf canopies and root systems of eight herbaceous plants of contrasted ecology using new techniques to create controlled patchiness in light and mineral nutrient supply. The results are compared with those of a conventional competition experiment. Measurements of dry matter partitioning and growth in patchy conditions indicate a consistent positive association between the foraging characteristics of roots and shoots, supporting the hypothesis of strong interdependence of competitive abilities for light and mineral nutrients. Differences are identified in the abilities of dominant and subordinate plants to forage on coarse and fine scalcs. It is suggested that a trade-off exists in the scale (“high” in dominants) and precision (high in subordinates) with which resources are intercepted and that this trade-off contributes to diversity in communities of competing plants.  相似文献

The time-frequency characteristics and interaction in the cell ensembles of the nonspecific (CM-Pf) and motor (Voi) thalamus were analyzed. Neuronal activity was registered by microelectrode technique during 18 stereotactic neurosurgery operations in spasmodic torticollis patients. The presentation of functionally significant verbal stimuli was accompanied by the emergence of short-term (0.5–1.5 s) local synchronization and stabilization of the oscillatory (3–6 Hz) activity in neighboring neurons of the nonspecific (CM-Pf) thalamus. These focuses of synchronized oscillatory neuronal activity were correlated with the moment of the greatest concentration of selective attention. A similar phenomenon of shortterm synchronization was observed in the motor (Voi) and nonspecific (CM-Pf) thalamus of the human brain during voluntary movements. Synchronization of neuronal activity occurred at the height of the implementation of the motor act, correlating with the maximum muscle tension, as well as in the aftereffect of the voluntary movement. In general, the findings suggest an important role of the local oscillations (3–6 Hz) and synchronization of thalamic neurons in the mechanisms of the relevant information transmission during goal-directed human behavior.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider two complementary cost functions for the landscape exploring processes to obtain the global optimum sequence through in vitro evolution protocol: one is the entropic cost Cetp, which is based on the deviation from the uniformity of a mutant distribution in sequence space, and the other is the energetic cost Ceng, which is based on the total number of sequences to be generated and evaluated. Based on a prior knowledge about the structure of a given fitness landscapes, the conductor of the experiment can think up the efficient search algorithm (ESA), which requires the minimum number of points (=sequences) to be searched up to the global optimum. For five typical fitness landscapes, we considered their respective (putative) ESA, and based on the ESA. As a result, we found a trade-off relationship between and for every case, that is, is approximately equal to the logarithm of the volume of the sequence space. and are interpreted in terms of the information-theoretic concepts.  相似文献

Theoretical studies of quasispecies usually focus on two properties of those populations at the mutation-selection equilibrium, namely asymptotic growth rate and population diversity. It has been postulated that, as a consequence of the high error rate of quasispecies replication, an increase of neutrality facilitates population optimization by reducing the amount of mutations with a deleterious effect on fitness. In this study we analyse how the optimization of equilibrium properties is affected when a quasispecies evolves in an environment perturbed through frequent bottleneck events. By means of a simple model we demonstrate that high neutrality may be detrimental when the population has to overcome repeated reductions in the population size, and that the property to be optimized in this situation is the time required to regenerate the quasispecies, i.e. its adaptability. In the scenario described, neutrality and adaptability cannot be simultaneously optimized. When fitness is equated with long-term survivability, high neutrality is the appropriate strategy in constant environments, while populations evolving in fluctuating environments are fitter when their neutrality is low, such that they can respond faster to perturbations. Our results might be relevant to better comprehend how a minority virus could displace the circulating quasispecies, a fact observed in natural infections and essential in viral evolution.  相似文献

Aims To explore whether the trade-off between seed and vegetative reproductive modes is flexible in environments with different amounts of available resources to maintain optimal behaviors.Methods A transition matrix model was established to determine the optimal trade-off between seed and vegetative reproduction in resources–variable habitats.Important findings The model predicts that plants allocate more resources to seed reproduction when available resources are scarce. With increasing resources, more vegetative propagules are produced. However, if resources keep increasing to a harmful level, plants would switch to seeds again.  相似文献

Pollinator behavior influences plant reproduction in many ways. A traditional measure of pollination, the number of visits received, may be a poor predictor of plant reproductive success, particularly when there are trade-offs between visit quantity and components of visit quality. For example, the duration of pollinator visits may be negatively correlated with the number of visits received by a flower. We tested for a trade-off between the number of bumblebee visits and the duration of those visits in an experimental population of snapdragons (Antirrhinummajus: Scrophulariaceae). The duration of a bumblebee visit to a flower increased significantly with the time interval since the flower had last been visited. Over the lifetime of a flower the correlation between the total number and average duration of visits received by a flower was weakly negative. However, at the whole-plant level the correlation was positive: plants whose flowers received more visits also received visits of longer duration. Factors affecting the relationship between quantity and duration of pollinator visits to flowers also were investigated. Two factors weakened the negative dependence of average visit duration on number of visits received by individual snapdragon flowers: (1) the correlation between the total number of visits to a flower and the average interval between visits was only −0.53, as visits to individual flowers were not very evenly spaced over time, and (2) newly opened flowers received fewer and shorter visits than older flowers. Comparing whole plants, nectar production per flower varied dramatically across individuals, a probable explanation for the positive correlation between visit number and average duration per flower observed at the plant level. The potential for a trade-off between these two components of pollinator service exists when visit duration depends on reward quantity; whether the trade-off is realized will depend on variation in nectar production and on whether pollinators forage systematically. High investment in mating and parental effort in male birds are considered mutually exclusive, as testosterone suppresses paternal care and stimulates sexual and aggressive behaviours. Superb fairy-wrens, Malurus cyaneus, are unusual in that males concurrently engage in courtship and paternal care. Fairy-wrens live as stable socially monogamous pairs with up to four subordinate male helpers. The majority of offspring are not sired by any of the males in the group but all group males provide parental care. Throughout the period of care males visit and court neighbouring females. To examine the role of testosterone in this trade-off, I determined the effect of testosterone treatment on the males' time budget, in particular their investment in within- and extrapair sexual behaviours and paternal care. Testosterone did not affect time spent foraging and resting or the number of songs produced. However, the relative investment in sexual and parental behaviours changed, confirming proximate control of this trade-off by testosterone. While there was a large increase in within-pair courtship, which is always rare during the nestling period, testosterone had only a small effect on the most frequent sexual behaviour, extragroup courtship displays. Testosterone failed to induce the maximum frequency of courtship flights of which male fairy-wrens are capable, and I argue that this is because, at prevailing testosterone levels, males are always motivated to leave their territory and social circumstances largely dictate the actual departure rate. Life history theory predicts that parents should desert a reproductive attempt if the costs of rearing this brood exceed the expected benefits. Thus, if the value of the current breeding attempt is reduced, for example through an unexpected reduction in size, parents are expected to reconsider whether it is worth continuing investing in their brood. With regard to nest desertion behaviour two predictions can be made: individuals are (1) more likely to desert if the reduction in clutch size is large and (2) less likely to desert if the reduction is at a late stage of breeding. We investigated the threshold at which nest desertion takes place by experimentally reducing great tit, Parus major, clutches to different sizes and at different stages of the incubation period. The results were in accordance with the predictions: clutch desertion rates were negatively related to the number of eggs that remained in the nest, and nest desertion was less likely nearer the end of the incubation period. In addition, we estimated the fitness consequences of nest desertion behaviour. For this purpose we made one group of birds desert in favour of a replacement clutch and another group rear a reduced brood. The latter were more likely to produce a second clutch after the first-brood fledglings had left the nest. As a consequence, the number of fledglings produced over the entire breeding season did not differ between the two experimental groups. We also counted the number of recruits and breeding adults in the following breeding season and found that the experimental groups did not differ in local recruitment and adult survival. Abstract 1. Diapause allows insects to cope with adverse weather conditions but also poses substantial fitness costs, e.g. through reduced survival of the diapausing stage or sublethal effects in the following season.
2. The energetic costs of diapause in females of the parasitoid Asobara tabida Nees (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) were assessed using experimental manipulation of diapause duration.
3. An increase in diapause length not only led to higher mortality among diapausing pupae but also caused a significant decrease in egg load, fat reserves, and dry weight of the emerging adult females.
4. Only larvae with sufficient resources were able to survive the entire diapause period and there was a trade-off between the metabolic costs of diapause and adult fitness components.
5. In contrast, the size (tibia length) of emerging females increased with increasing diapause duration. It is proposed that this may be due to a genetic correlation between larval dry weight and adult size, so that selection for heavier larvae would result in larger adults even when resources are limited.
6. Ultimately, the evolution of diapause duration and its consequences for adult performance will depend on the costs of overwintering and the ecological conditions in the habitat.  相似文献

Bet-hedging theory addresses how individuals should optimize fitness in varying and unpredictable environments by sacrificing mean fitness to decrease variation in fitness. So far, three main bet-hedging strategies have been described: conservative bet-hedging (play it safe), diversified bet-hedging (don’t put all eggs in one basket) and adaptive coin flipping (choose a strategy at random from a fixed distribution). Within this context, we analyse the trade-off between many small eggs (or seeds) and few large, given an unpredictable environment. Our model is an extension of previous models and allows for any combination of the bet-hedging strategies mentioned above. In our individual-based model (accounting for both ecological and evolutionary forces), the optimal bet-hedging strategy is a combination of conservative and diversified bet-hedging and adaptive coin flipping, which means a variation in egg size both within clutches and between years. Hence, we show how phenotypic variation within a population, often assumed to be due to non-adaptive variation, instead can be the result of females having this mixed strategy. Our results provide a new perspective on bet-hedging and stress the importance of extreme events in life history evolution.  相似文献
