Summary The water uptake rates of roots in saline soils are depressed by the simultaneously decreasing matric and osmotic water potentials in the soil surrounding the roots (rhizospheric soil). Unfortunately there are no reliable tools available for direct measurements of the effect of decreasing water potentials in the rhizospheric soil on the uptake rate of soil water by roots. This paper presents some results of a vegetation technique for studying the effect of different combinations of osmotic and matric water potentials in the rhizospheric soil on the water uptake rates of barley roots. Water uptake rates were reduced to a greater extent by decreasing soil matric water potentials than by decreasing soil osmotic water potentials. According to the results of this experiment, there was no relationship between the total soil water potential of a sandy soil and the water uptake rates when the roots were exposed to different combinations of and .  相似文献

Summary and Conclusion The measurement of spatial association between two species is considered on the basis of interspecies mean crowding. Two indices of overlapping, γ andC μ, are derived as geometric and weighted arithmetic means of the same component ratios related to inter- and intraspecies mean crowdings. Both indices behave in a similar way, ranging from 1 when the distributions of two species are completely overlapped to 0 when they are completely exclusive with each other. The former is essentially identical with indices proposed byKuno (1968) andPianka (1973), and the latter is a modified form ofMorisita’s (1959)C δ index. Indices to measure the degree of spatial correlation between species, ω andR μ, are then derived for both kinds of overlapping indices, which vary from 1 in complete overlapping, through 0 in independent occurrence, to −1 in complete exclusion. Various kinds of interspecies association are analyzed using these indices and an extended form of the regression graph which provides a convenient way of indicating the spatial interrelation between two species as well as distribution patterns of respective species. The method presented in this paper may also be applicable to compare temporal distribution patterns between species, similarity between communities, etc. For such a wider application which includes continuous as well as discrete distributions, the interpretation of intra- and interspecies mean crowdings is not necessarily appropriate, and hence the concept of mean concentration with the symbols and for intraspecies relation and and for interspecies relation is suggested. Mild alkaline hydrolysis of the glycophosphosphingolipids of the protozoanLeptomonas samueli liberated several phosphoinositol-containing oligosaccharides (PI-oligosaccharides), which were purified by high performance anion exchange chromatography. The oligosaccharides in the resulting four fractions were characterized by methylation analysis, fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry and two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The oligosaccharides contain the core structure Man(1–4)GlcN(1–6)-myo-inositol-1-OPO3, and are substituted with 2mol of 2-aminoethylphosphonate per mol of oligosaccharide. The nonreducing ends of the oligosaccharides were terminated by rhamnose branched neutral and acidic xylose-containing penta-, hexa-, hepta- and octasaccharides, of which the three most abundant were shown to have the structures:

A novel molecular connectivity index, , based on the adjacency matrix of molecular graphs and novel atomic valence connectivities, , for predicting the molar diamagnetic susceptibilities of organic compounds is proposed. The is defined as: , where and Ei are the atomic valence connectivity and the valence orbital energy of atom i, respectively. A good QSPR model for molar diamagnetic susceptibilities can be constructed from and using multivariate linear regression (MLR). The correlation coefficient r, standard error, and average absolute deviation of the MLR model are 0.9918, 5.56 cgs, and 4.26 cgs, respectively, for the 721 organic compounds tested (training set). Cross-validation using the leave-one-out method demonstrates that the MLR model is highly reliable statistically. Using the MLR model, the average absolute deviations of the predicted values of molar diamagnetic susceptibility of another 360 organic compounds (test set) is 4.34 cgs. The results show that the current method is more effective than literature methods for estimating the molar diamagnetic susceptibility of an organic compound. The MLR method thus provides an acceptable model for the prediction of molar diamagnetic susceptibilities of organic compounds. The effects of these salts on the helix–coil transition of rA–rU and rI–rC helices were examined. Increasing the size of the hydrophobic substituents, R1, R2, and R3 lowers the degree of stabilization of the helical structure. The disproportionation reaction, 2rA–rU→rA–rU2 + rA occurs readily with salts II and III, especially when the substituents, R1, R2, and R3 are small, i.e., H or Me. Spermine is found to stabilize the rA–rU2 and rI–rC helices to approximately the same extent; however, large differences between the degree of stabilization of rA–rU2 and rI-rC helices are observed when the substituents R1, R2, and R3 are large hydrophobic groups. Similar results are also obtained for the spermidine series. Finally, differences in the interactions of the salts II and III with rA–rU2 and rI–rC helices suggest that the latter helix is denser.  相似文献

A method based on the fluorescence probe 8-hydroxypyrene-1,3,6-trisulfonic acid for in situ measurement of pH in partly frozen aqueous solutions was developed using multifrequency, phase-modulated fluorescence spectroscopy inherently correcting for light scattering. The probe was determined to have pK a = 7.72 ± 0.03 at 25.0 °C extrapolated to zero ionic strength with as derived from temperature dependence (5 to 25 °C investigated). Ionic strength dependence of pK a determined experimentally was described using Debye–Hückel formalism for ionic strength up to 3 M. Temperature and ionic strength dependence were combined to yield for determination of pH at subzero temperatures with α experimentally determined from the ratio between fluorescence intensity after excitation at 454 and 415 nm, α = FI(454 nm)/2.5·FI(415 nm). Fluorescence could be described as a decay of a single excited state with a fluorescence life time of 5.40 ± 0.05 ns at 25 °C, and excited state acid–base equilibration was shown not to interfere with the pH measurement. Using the method, pH of a 0.25 M phosphate buffer with pH = 6.8 at 25 °C was shown to decrease gradually to pH = 4.2 in the ice slurry at −13 °C.  相似文献

Exposure of algae or higher plants to bright light can result in a photoinhibitory reduction in the number of functional PS II reaction centers (n) and a consequential decrease in the maximum quantum yield of photosynthesis. However, we found that light-saturated photosynthetic rates (Pmax) in natural phytoplankton assemblages sampled from the south Pacific ocean were not reduced despite photoinhibitory decreases in n of up to 52%. This striking insensitivity of Pmax to photoinhibition resulted from reciprocal increases in electron turnover ( )through the remaining functional PS II centers. Similar insensitivity of Pmax was also observed in low light adapted cultures of Thalassiosira weissflogii (a marine diatom), but not in high light adapted cells where Pmax decreased in proportion to n. This differential sensitivity to decreases in n occurred because was close to the maximum achievable rate in the high light adapted cells, whereas was initially low in the low light adapted cells and could thus increase in response to decreases in n. Our results indicate that decreases in plant productivity are not necessarily commensurate with photoinhibition, but rather will only occur if decreases in n are sufficient to maximize or incident irradiance becomes subsaturating.  相似文献

The data processing method of the turbidimetric bioassay of nisin was modified to facilitate its industrial application. The influence of the initial indicator concentration was minimized by a redefined specific dose of the bacteriocin as the quotient between the titer of the added bacteriocin and the initial population density of the indicator in the suspension. It was found that d c = 0.125 μg ml−1 was the critical dose of nisin that can cause a complete inhibition of the indicator, Pediococcus acidilactici UL5, with an initial OD of 0.135. To eliminate the interference of the cell debris, an equation, , exploiting d c, was formulated to obtain the intrinsic survival proportion. The use of the specific dose of the bacteriocin and the intrinsic survival proportion as parameters of the dose/response curve greatly enhanced its repeatability and feasibility. A dual-dosage approach was developed to further simplify the conventional standard dose/response curve method.  相似文献

The structures and stability of 1–7 dications were calculated at the ab initio MP2/aug-cc-pVTZ level of theory. The dications AlH2+ 1 and 2 were characterized to be unstable thermodynamically. However, these and the stable dications, 37 have considerable kinetic barriers for deprotonation. Each of the structures 37 contains one or more two-electron three-center (2e–3c) bonds. There have been few studies quantifying litterfall, standing litterstock and gross litter decomposition following forest conversion to plantation crops such as cocoa. Additionally, an assessment of changing processes occurring in forest floor litter systems with plantation age is lacking. We investigated litterfall production, standing litter changes and litter decomposition along a chronosequence of shaded cocoa farm fields (secondary forest, 3, 15 and 30-year-old) in the moist semi-deciduous forest belt in the Ashanti Region of Ghana in West Africa over 24 months. Mean annual litterfall production differed significantly among study sites and ranged from 5.0 to 10.4 Mg DM ha?1. Similarly, standing litter differed significantly between land-use /plot ages. The results showed significant differences in quality between litter from forest and litter from cocoa plantations. Litterfall from forests had higher concentrations of nitrogen and lower concentration of soluble polyphenols and lignin compared to litter from cocoa systems. Annual decomposition coefficients (k L ) were similar in cocoa systems (0.221–0.227) but higher under secondary forests (0.354). Correlations between litter quality parameters and the decomposition coefficient showed nitrogen and lignin concentrations as well as ratios that include nitrogen are the best predictors of decomposition for the litters studied. Our results confirm the hypothesis that decomposition decreases following forest conversion to shaded cocoa systems because of litter quality changes and that decomposition rates correlate to litter quality differences between forest and cocoa ecosystems. The study also showed that standing litter pools and litterfall production in recently converted cocoa plantations are low compared to secondary forests or mature cocoa systems. Management strategies involving the introduction of upper canopy species during plantation development with corresponding replacement of tree mortality with diverse fast growing species will provide high quality and quantity litter resources.  相似文献

Summary The use of several S1 individuals to represent an S0 individual permits the use of a Design II mating scheme for plants with only one pistillate flower per plant. Estimates of additive (V A ) and dominance (V D ) variance from this mating scheme will be biased upwards, when a small number (10) of individuals of each S1 line are used. This bias can be computed, and the additive and dominance estimates can be corrected. Of particular interest is the observation that the additive genetic variance contributes to bias in estimates of V D . When S0 plants are non inbred and their selfedprogeny (S1 lines) are used to represent them in developing families for use in the Design II, where m1 is the number of individuals used to represent an S1 line in developing half sib-families and m2 is the number of individuals used to represent the S1 line in making up full sib-families. We investigated the interaction (hyper)polarizability of neon–dihydrogen pairs by performing high-level ab initio calculations with atom/molecule-specific, purpose-oriented Gaussian basis sets. We obtained interaction-induced electric properties at the SCF, MP2, and CCSD levels of theory. At the CCSD level, for the T-shaped configuration, around the respective potential minimum of 6.437 a0, the interaction-induced mean first hyperpolarizability varies for 5?<? R/a0?<?10 as

Six normal adults looked at 12 color transparencies that were presented 30 times each in response to the occurrence of alpha in the occipital EEG and that were not presented when no-alpha occurred. The time delay between the occurrence of recorded EEG alpha and the feedback stimulus was systematically varied, as was the threshold value of alpha amplitude required for feedback stimulus to occur. As time delay increased, the replicative reliability of the temporal association between alpha and the visual stimulus decreased. The measures of the EEG response were: the mean durations of alpha and of no-alpha durations ; an estimate of random scatter or variability in a single trial (S e ); and the ratio of these , which is the reciprocal of the coefficient of variation. The latter ratio defines control of the EEG response. Control was greatest for the minimum feedback delay (.25 sec) and a feedback threshold of 25% of the maximum peak alpha amplitude recorded under a prior eyes-closed. resting condition. Control of the EEG decreased as time delays increased and at lower and higher feedback thresholds. It was proposed that the measurement of control for various combinations of values of relevant experimental parameters could be used to select that combination which gave the best control. This optimum combination of values of parameters could be chosen for astandardized method.This research was supported in its entirety by the Veterans Administration Medical Research Program.  相似文献

An abnormal human fetal hemoglobin not only may be either aGγ- or anAγ-chain variant but also may be present in a different proportion of the total fetal hemoglobin.Gγ-Chain variants contribute either about one-fourth or one-eighth to the total production of HbF in the heterozygote, whereas theAγ-chain variants approximate either one-eighth or one-sixteenth of the total HbF. These observations may indicate the presence of four nonallelic Hbγ structural genes (termed ) which produce γ chains in an approximate ratio of 4 : 2 : 2 : 1. HbF Malta I is considered to be the product of a mutant of the locus, an undefined HbFx that of the locus, HbF Hull and HbF Jamaica products of mutated loci, and the newly discovered HbF Malta II a mutant of the gene. Summary Reproductive potentials of transplanted curthroat trout (Salmo clarki) and Dolly Varden charr (Salvelinus malma) and of their donor stocks were estimated from life history data. We found good agreement between observed and predicted age at maturity in all populations, and cannot reject the hypothesis that the fish matured at the age maximizing the overall lifetime reproductive potential ( ). Our estimates were insensitive to probable variations in female fecundity, adult mortalityrate and maximum body length. Small changes in either juvenile mortality-rate or individual growth-rate had marked effects on the estimations, as did changes in the Malthusian parameter (r). Three alternative mechanistic explanations of how age at maturity is determined could be rejected. We suggest that fish are able to adjust the maturity age non-genetically to changes in growth-rate, and that temporal variations in juvenile survival-rate allow coexistence of genotypes coding for different ages at maturity at the same growth-rate.  相似文献

Summary A set of three-dimensional triple-resonance experiments is described which provide , , and coupling constants. The pulse sequences generate E.COSY-like multiplet patterns and comprise a magnetization transfer from the amide proton to the α-proton or vice versa via the directly bound heteronuclei. For residues with the 1Hα spin resonating close to the H2O signal, a modified HNCA experiment can be employed to measure the vicinal 1HN,1Hα couplings. Ambiguities associated with the conversion of values into ϕ-angle constraints for protein structure determination can be resolved with the knowledge of the heteronuclear 3J-couplings. In favourable cases, stereospecific assignments of glycine α-protons can be obtained by employing the experiments described here in combination with NOE data. The methods are applied to flavodoxin from Desulfovibrio vulgaris.  相似文献

The pathway and ab initio direct kinetics of the decomposition 5-aminotetrazole (5-ATZ) to HN3 and NH2CN was investigated. Reactant, products and transition state were optimized with MP2 and B3LYP methods using 6–311G** and aug-cc-pVDZ basis sets. The intrinsic reaction coordinate curve of the reaction was calculated using the MP2 method with 6–311G** basis set. The energies were refined using CCSD(T)/6–311G**. Rate constants were evaluated by conventional transition-state theory (CVT) and canonical variational transition-state theory (TST), with tunneling effect over 300 to 2,500 K. The results indicated that the tunneling effect and the variational effect are small for the calculated rate constants. For long-lived iteroparous vertebrates that annually produce few young, life history theory predicts that reproductive output (R) and juvenile survival should influence temporal variation in population growth rate (λ) more than adult survival does. We examined this general prediction using 15 years of mark–recapture data from a population of California spotted owls (Strix occidentalis occidentalis). We found that survival of individuals ≥1 year old (ϕ) exhibited much less temporal variability , where CV is coefficient of variation, than R and that R was strongly influenced by environmental stochasticity. Although λ was most sensitive ( ; log-transformed sensitivity) to ϕ and much less sensitive to either R or juvenile survival (survival rate of owls from fledging to 1 year old; ), we estimated that R contributed as much as ϕ to the observed annual variability in λ. The contribution of juvenile survival to variability in λ was proportional to its These results are consistent with the hypothesis that natural selection may have favored the evolution of longevity in spotted owls as a strategy to increase the probability of experiencing favorable years for reproduction. Our finding that annual weather patterns that most affected R (temperature and precipitation during incubation) and ϕ (conditions during winter related to the Southern Oscillation Index) were equally good at explaining temporal variability in λ supports the conclusion that R and ϕ were equally responsible for variability in λ. Although currently accepted conservation measures for spotted owl populations attempt to enhance survival, our results indicated that conservation measures that target R may be as successful, as long as actions do not reduce ϕ.  相似文献

The ventilatory and metabolic responses of lesser spear-nosed bats to hypoxia and hypercapnia were measured to determine whether these corresponded to preliminary allometries and a positive relationship between hypoxic ventilatory threshold andP 50. Ventilatory responses of lesser spear-nosed bats to 3, 5 and 7% CO2 differed significantly from ventilation on air and each other. The magnitude of their ventilatory response to CO2 is consistent with the prediction of a smaller ventilatory response to hypercapnia in small compared to large mammals [ ; Williams et al. (1994)]. Among 12, 10 and 8% O2 treatments only the ventilatory response to 8% O2 differed significantly from ventilation on air or the other treatments. Metabolic rate was significantly reduced at both 10 and 8% O2. The hypoxic ventilatory response of these bats does not support the prediction of a greater response in small compared to large mammals [ ; Boggs and Tenney (1984)]. Their metabolic response is consistent with the hypoxic hypometabolism typical of small mammals, though not of comparable magnitude. The response, expressed as percent change in convection requirement ( ), is also less than that observed in other small mammals. This relative insensitivity to hypoxia may be associated with this bat's unusually high affinity hemoglobin (P50=27.5 torr).  相似文献
