Experiments on developing eggs of European pond turtle (Emys orbicularis) demonstrated S-shaped changes in the rate of oxygen consumption and body weight during embryonic development. The rate of oxygen consumption and weight progressively increased within 70 days after hatching. During embryogenesis, the mass-specific rate of oxygen consumption decreased. After hatching, it increased but then decreased to a certain level, which remained constant to the end of the studied period. We observed unidirectional changes in the mass-specific rate of oxygen consumption and specific weight gain during embryonic development and this pattern was maintained after hatching. This work summarizes the observations on 30 species of microdriles belonging to the families Naididae (Rhyacodrilinae, Pristininae, Naidinae, Phallodrilinae, and Tubificinae), Phreodrilidae, Lumbriculidae, and Enchytraeidae using scanning electron microscopy. The lumbricid Eiseniella tetraedra, a megadrile species common in typical microdrile habitats, was used for comparison. Microdriles display external ciliate sense structures along the entire body; even at the clitellum and in budding and regeneration zones. According to the shape of the cilia, these sense structures can be divided into receptors of blunt cilia, receptors of sharp cilia, and composed receptors. Sense receptors can be morphologically unconspicuous or clearly defined on sensory buds or papillae. All microdriles studied have receptors of blunt cilia. Enchytraeids have characteristic receptors of short cilia. Pristina (Pristininae), Chaetogaster, Ophidonais, and Stylaria (Naidinae) have receptors of long blunt cilia. Composed receptors were found only in some microdriles and E. tetraedra. Receptors of sharp cilia have been found in most microdriles. Enchytraeids might be the only exception, but sharp cilia are probably present in the amphibiotic Cognettia sphagnetorum. Sensory cells with long sharp cilia might play a rheoreceptor role, and their presence in E. tetraedra and C. sphagnetorum would imply the reappearing of an ancient character that was probably lost with the transit from aquatic to terrestrial habitats. Some lumbriculids have ciliated fields. Anatomically, these structures appear as intermediate between the typical isolate sensory structures of microdriles and the sensillae of the hirudineans. The general pattern in microdriles is that uniciliate receptors and multiciliate receptors are separated, which supports the presumed aquatic origin of the clitellates. J. Summary Regression equations are provided for the earthworm Eisenia foetida with respect to age at which 50% of the population became clitellate at 25° C in relation to population density in activated sludge and in horse manure. Regression equations are provided for progeny per cocoon versus weight of cocoon, and weight of cocoon in relation to weight of parent; from these an equation is derived for progeny per cocoon relative to worm weight. Regression equations are given on (a) number of cocoons produced per adult in relation to age and population density from onset of adulthood to median peak production of cocoons, age 10 weeks, and from age 10 weeks to age 27 weeks, and (b) weight of worm in relation to population density and age between ages 5 and 27 weeks. From (a) and (b) a family of equations (c) are derived giving progeny per cocoon in relation to age of adult and population density. From equations (a) and (c) two families of equations are generated giving progeny per adult in relation to ascent to, and descent from, the median week of peak cocoon production in relation to population density. Imidacloprid, a widely used neonicotinoid insecticide, is toxic to silkworm (Bombyx mori). To explore whether N‐acetyl‐l ‐cysteine (NAC) has an effect on preventing silkworm (B. mori) from toxification caused by imidacloprid, we fed the fifth‐instar larvae with mulberry leaves dipped in 200 mg/L NAC solution before exposing in imidacloprid, and investigated the silkworm growth, survival rate, feed efficiency, cocoon quality, and the activities of antioxidant enzymes in midgut. The results showed that addition of NAC could significantly increase body weight, survival rate, and feed efficiency of imidacloprid poisoned silkworm larvae (P < 0.05), as well as cocoon mass, cocoon shell mass, and the ratio of cocoon shell (P < 0.05). Furthermore, it could significantly promote the activities of the antioxidant enzymes including superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxide in the midgut of fifth‐instar larvae under imidacloprid exposure at the late stage of treatment. In addition, it also could downregulate the malondialdehyde content. The results of our findings proved that the added NAC may have some beneficial effects on protection or restoration of antioxidant balance in imidacloprid exposed larvae.  相似文献

Previous QTL studies have identified 24 QTLs for body weight and growth from 3 to 10 weeks after birth in an intersubspecific backcross mouse population between C57BL/6J and wild Mus musculus castaneus that has 60% of the body size of C57BL/6J. The castaneus allele at the most potent QTL (Pbwg1) on proximal chromosome 2 retards growth. In this study we have developed a congenic strain with a 44.1-Mb interval containing the castaneus allele at Pbwg1 by recurrent backcrossing to C57BL/6J. The congenic mouse developed was characterized by significantly higher body weight gain between 1 and 3 weeks of age and lower weight of white fat pads at 10 weeks of age than C57BL/6J. However, no clear difference in body weight at 1–10 weeks of age was observed between congenic and C57BL/6J strains. QTL analysis with 269 F2 mice between the two strains did not identify any QTLs for body weight at 1, 3, 6, and 10 weeks of age, but it discovered eight closely linked QTLs affecting body weight gain from 1 to 3 weeks of age, lean body weight, weight of white fat pads, and body length within the Pbwg1 region. The castaneus alleles at all fat pad QTLs reduced the phenotypes, whereas at the remaining growth and body composition QTLs, they increased the trait values. These results illustrate that Pbwg1, which initially appeared to be a single locus, was resolved into several loci with opposite effects on the composition traits of overall body weight. This gives a reason for the loss of the Pbwg1 effect found in the original backcross population. We have sampled populations of the parthenogenetic and polyploid earthworm Eiseniella tetraedra along the Ume, Vindel and Sävar Rivers in northern Sweden. The Vindel River is one of the last free‐flowing large rivers in NW Europe, while the Ume River, which flows parallel to it, is harnessed with twenty major dams. Clones were identified on the basis of overall enzyme phenotypes that were detected using starch gel electrophoresis. We found that clone pool diversity is higher along the Vindel River than along the Ume River and the clone pool similarity is, in a similar fashion, higher along the free‐flowing river. Evidently the dams stop effectively clone dispersal along the Ume River. Clone diversity is highest at the river mouth. The small free‐running Sävar River had also high clone diversity at the lower course of the river. Clone turnover between years is high. We found no evidence for parallel adaptation of clones along the two rivers.  相似文献

Summary Chaoborus crystallinus fourth-instar larvae were reared individually at 14°, 17° and 20° C under different food conditions. Daphnia magna of 1.25 mm average length served as prey. The following were measured: amount of prey ingested, larval weight gain, duration of fourth instar, body weight of the adults, and egg number per female. At a given temperature, the body weight, egg-number and developmental rate increased with food consumption. At a given food consumption, higher temperatures caused a decrease in body weight and egg number, and an increase in developmental rate. Gross production efficiencies for fourth-instar larvae were highest at temperatures around 17° C. The results clearly indicate that from an energetic point of view higher temperatures are disadvantageous. In C. crystallinus vertical migration is evidently a way of lowering the temperature to which the animals are exposed and hence optimizing food conversion into biomass and offspring production, especially if prey densities are below the saturation level.  相似文献

Introduction

Antipsychotics (AP) induce weight gain. However, reviews and meta-analyses generally are restricted to second generation antipsychotics (SGA) and do not stratify for duration of AP use. It is hypothesised that patients gain more weight if duration of AP use is longer.

Method

A meta-analysis was conducted of clinical trials of AP that reported weight change. Outcome measures were body weight change, change in BMI and clinically relevant weight change (7% weight gain or loss). Duration of AP-use was stratified as follows: ≤6 weeks, 6–16 weeks, 16–38 weeks and >38 weeks. Forest plots stratified by AP as well as by duration of use were generated and results were summarised in figures.

Results

307 articles met inclusion criteria. The majority were AP switch studies. Almost all AP showed a degree of weight gain after prolonged use, except for amisulpride, aripiprazole and ziprasidone, for which prolonged exposure resulted in negligible weight change. The level of weight gain per AP varied from discrete to severe. Contrary to expectations, switch of AP did not result in weight loss for amisulpride, aripiprazole or ziprasidone. In AP-naive patients, weight gain was much more pronounced for all AP.

Conclusion

Given prolonged exposure, virtually all AP are associated with weight gain. The rational of switching AP to achieve weight reduction may be overrated. In AP-naive patients, weight gain is more pronounced.  相似文献

Final grain dry weight, a component of yield in wheat, is dependent on the duration and the rate of grain filling. The purpose of the study was to compare the grain filling patterns between common wheat, (Triticum aestivum L.), and durum wheat, (Triticum turgidum L. var. durum), and investigate relationships among grain filling parameters, yield components and the yield itself. The most important variables in differentiating among grain filling curves were final grain dry weight (W) for common wheat genotypes and grain filling rate (R) for durum wheat genotypes; however, in all cases the sets of variables important in differentiating among grain filling curves were extended to either two or all three parameters. Furthermore, in one out of three environmental conditions and for both groups of genotypes, the most important parameter in the set was grain filling duration (T). It indicates significant impact of environmental conditions on dry matter accumulation and the mutual effect of grain filling duration and its rate on the final grain dry weight. The medium early anthesis date could be associated with further grain weight and yield improvements in wheat. Grain filling of earlier genotypes occurs in more temperate environments, which provides enough time for gradual grain fill and avoids the extremes of temperature and the stress of dry conditions.  相似文献

Data on the reproductive biology of seven Indian species of earthworms, viz.Perionyx excavatus Perrier,Lampito mauritii Kinberg,Polypheretima elongata (Perrier),Pontoscolex corethrurus (Muller),Eutyphoeus gammiei (Beddard),Dichogaster modiglianii (Rosa) andDrawida nepalensis Michaelsen are presented. The peregrine earthworms such asPerionyx excavatus, Pontoscolex corethrurus, Dichogaster modiglianii, andPolypheretima elongata are considered to be continuous breeders with high fecundity. NativeLampito mauritii andDrawida nepalensis are semi-continuous andEutyphoeus gammiei discrete breeders. There is a dramatic increase in cocoon production by most earthworm species of Tripura in the summer and monsoon with a corresponding peak during April and July. Cocoon production decreased or ceased during winter. Temperature affected the incubation period of cocoons. With increase in temperature, incubation period increased in the endogeic worms,Pontoscolex corethrurus, Polypheretima elongata andDrawida nepalensis and decreased in the epigeic worms,Perionyx excavatus andDichogaster modiglianii, within a temperature range between 28–32°C under laboratory conditions. There was a significant(P < 0.05) positive correlation between number of hatchlings per cocoon and incubation period inLampito mauritii. High rate of cocoon production, short development time with high hatching success, as well as continuous breeding strategies in the epigeic speciesPerionyx excavatus andDichogaster modiglianii and the top soil endogeic species,Pontoscolex corethrurus,Drawida nepalensis andLampito mauritii, indicate their possible usefulness in vermiculture. The giant anecic worm,Eutyphoeus gammiei, which has a very long cocoon development time, discrete breeding strategy and very low rate of cocoon production, is not a suitable species for vermiculture.  相似文献

To identify the molecular markers associated with growth and yield parameters in silkworm, Bombyx mori, RAPD profiles generated with seven UBC primers for fourteen silkworm stocks, originated from China, Japan, India, and Russia, were statistically analyzed. Stepwise multiple regression analysis establishes significant association of 45 markers with larval span, growth indices and four cocoon yield parameters relevant for silk production and t-test attest significance of the association of 89.51500 bp and 54.13300 bp, respectively, with longer larval duration and high cocoon weight. The validity of this selection of markers was further supported with discriminant function analysis (DFA) done on the basis of Mahalanobis D 2 statistics. The two indices of yield/growth were also tested with DFA, which helped in identifying a few markers and thereby opened scope of using such marker (e.g., 91.11900 bp) for incorporating molecular markers in the breeding program for crop improvement in silkworm.  相似文献

Callimico goeldii gives birth to single offspring, whereas other callitrichids, including Callithrix jacchus, twin. This study compares maternal effort and infant development in C. goeldii and C. jacchus; it is the first study to look at nursing frequency. Infants were observed from birth for 7 weeks in two captive groups each of C. goeldii and C. jacchus. C. goeldii mothers physiologically invested the same or less than C. jacchus mothers. C. goeldii mothers gained the same amount of weight during pregnancy in absolute terms as did the smaller C. jacchus. This results in a smaller gain in proportion to maternal weight but an equivalent proportional gain on a per fetus basis. C. goeldii mothers nursed their infants less based on duration of nursing bouts compared with C. jacchus mothers. C. goeldii mothers transported their infants exclusively through the first 2 weeks of life, which is longer than C. jacchus mothers, who exclusively transported infants only during the first week of life. As maternal infant carriage declined, other group members transported offspring in both species. C. goeldii infants engaged in independent locomotive sequences later in development and tasted solid foods less frequently than C. jacchus infants when compared at equivalent ages. A single, opportunistic milk sample obtained from a C. goeldii mother when her infant was 48 days old indicates that C. goeldii milk contains gross energy from crude protein within the range of variation observed in Callithrix milk. Despite the similarities in milk quality and prenatal effort in individual fetuses, C. goeldii infants gain weight faster from 0 to 18 months than do C. jacchus infants. A reduction in litter size allows C. goeldii mothers to spend more time carrying their infant and to delay weaning, thereby allowing accelerated infant and juvenile growth rates compared with C. jacchus.  相似文献

The cocoon production of 144 Lumbricillus rivalis cultured in pairs at 10 ± 1 °C was high over the first 2 weeks of breeding activity and then declined, chiefly because of high mortality. Cocoon deposition lasted for between 1 and 16 weeks, eight pairs of worms producing cocoons for 9 weeks and one pair for 16 weeks. During the total period of cocoon deposition over 9000 eggs (mean 17·4 per cocoon) were deposited. Two decaying wrack bed populations of L. rivalis showed a low level of cocoon and egg production in autumn, rising to an annual maximum in late winter/early spring. In these populations the mean egg content varied seasonally from 17·1 to 47·8 eggs per cocoon. When cocoons in the laboratory were transferred from the site of deposition to incubation dishes 31% hatched, but those left in the substrate showed a 92% hatch. In the naturally occurring populations 19% of the cocoons detached from seaweed fronds hatched, but 62% of those left in situ. Eggs and worm embryos developed to relatively late stages in most cocoons, whatever the rate of hatching; development often continued for up to 2 months after deposition without hatching. Over 50% of the fertile eggs in cocoons from decaying wrack hatched and developed to 5 mm worms.  相似文献

The effect of starvation and subsequent re‐feeding to satiation on compensatory growth performance, insulin and blood serum values were investigated in juvenile Persian sturgeon (Acipencer persicus) with an average weight 108.04 ± 0.28 g (mean ± SEM) and in the same rearing condition over an 8‐week period. Sturgeons were allocated to one of five feeding treatments: controls (C, continuous feeding), W1 (1 week starvation), W2 (2 weeks starvation), W3 (3 weeks starvation) and W4 (4 weeks starvation), followed by a single 4 weeks of re‐feeding to satiation. Changes in growth performance and blood serum indices were examined at the end of weeks 4 and 8. Body weight, specific growth rate (SGR), condition factor (CF) and weight gain were determined to have significantly decreased during starvation. Fish starved for 1 week reached the same weight as the control fish after re‐feeding for 4 weeks, indicating that complete compensatory growth occurred. Although the specific growth rate in W2, W3 and W4 fish was greater than that in the control fish after re‐feeding, W2, W3 and W4 fish did not reach the same body weight as control fish at the end of re‐feeding period, and showed partial compensation only. Blood plasma, glucose and insulin concentrations did not change significantly during starvation and re‐feeding (P > 0.05). This suggests that sturgeon are able to maintain glycaemia during starvation, probably due to their non‐carbohydrate dietary source. Plasma total lipid and triglyceride levels increased in starvation treatments, whereas the increases were significant only in W3 treatment (P < 0.05). After a 4‐week re‐feeding period, their levels decreased in comparison to the starvation periods. Increases in plasma total lipid and triglyceride levels appear to be due to their roles as preferred nutrients for mobilization in Persian sturgeon and the magnitude and duration of compensatory growth depended on the length of food deprivation.  相似文献

The main objectives of this study were (1) to determine the optimum frequency for transferring a fixed population of Eisenia foetida into fresh surroundings to effect maximum production of earthworm biomass, (2) to determine carrying capacity and maximum production of E. foetida biomass per unit area–volume–time at 24°C, and (3) to measure the nucleic acid concentration of this earthworm. Population were rapidly decimated in limed peat moss with horse manure as food when transferred weekly or when held for ten weeks in the same substrate; no significant differences and high survival obtained at intermediate intervals. Significantly more cocoons were produced when transfers were made every two weeks, and a trend was seen toward a lower level of cocoon production with length of detention in substrate. The growth rate of adults was approximately similar in relation to the frequency of transfer, as was biomass, at transfer frequencies of every 2 to 9 weeks. One interpretation of the data is that a detention interval of 6 to 8 weeks is optimum for maximizing production of biomass; eight weeks is the interval commonly selected in commercial practices. Carrying was 9.5 g live weight on a surface area–volume of 24 cm2–110 cm3 with horse manure as food on 20 g of soil as substrate; maximum production in this space was 2 g live weight in 7 weeks, which extrapolates to 6685 kg protein/ha yr. Nucleic acid concentration was 2.9%, which falls below values of about 6–28% obtained for microbes, and may exceed values for mammalian muscle by about twofold.  相似文献

Microplitis demolitor, a solitary braconid parasitoid of Helicoverpa armigera and Helicoverpa punctigera, uses an increase in relative humidity to signal the end of diapause and the re‐establishment of direct development. 2. Photoperiod and temperature changes appear not to have a direct influence on the duration or termination of diapause in this species. 3. Once diapause termination is signalled, the adult parasitoids emerge approximately 38 days later. 4. The cue for diapause termination in M. demolitor is different from that used by its hosts and ensures that the parasitoid emerges to find a population of nonmigrating hosts. 5. It appears that the cocoon surrounding the diapausing parasitoid plays a role in diapause termination; parasitoids emerge earlier from diapause if the cocoon is removed but the weight of the intact cocoon does not appear to influence the length of time the parasitoid is in diapause.  相似文献

Key demographic traits in insect herbivores (survival, growth, and egg production) are often responsive to variation in diet quality, especially to dietary nitrogen (N) levels. Soluble carbohydrates may also be limiting. Using defined diets under controlled laboratory conditions, we examined survival, growth, and egg production in response to a range of diet qualities in adult females of a grass-feeding grasshopper Ageneotettix deorum (Scudder). Diets varied factorially within naturally occurring ranges of total N (1–7%) and carbohydrate (4–27%) levels. N concentrations significantly impacted weight gain, egg production rate, the elapsed time until the first egg pod, and the time between the first and second egg pod. These responses were typically quadratic in nature with a maximum response near 4–5% total N. The rate of pod production rather than number of eggs per pod best explained changes in reproductive rate. Dietary carbohydrate levels seldom exerted a significant impact on demographic parameters except when interacting with N on survival, egg weight, and the period between egg pods. Clearly, factors that alter the availability of quality diet, especially total N levels, can contribute to demographic responses in A. deorum. Wheat infected naturally withFusarium, contaminated mainly with 18.53 mg DON per kg, was added to a total constant wheat proportion of 400g/kg diet. Control and DON contaminated feed was fed for 11 weeks underad libitum and restrictive feeding conditions to 48 pigs of both sexes, which were randomly divided into 4 groups. Effects on performance (live weight range between 26 and 100kg), duration of feed intake and blood parameters were investigated. Parallel to this study, a balance study was carried out to examine the effects on nutrient digestibility and DON metabolism. The group fed the DON contaminated rationad libitum consumed 15% less feed and gained 14% less live weight compared to thead libitum control group, while the feed to gain ratio was unaffected. Under restrictive feeding conditions (DON and control) pigs exhibited 33%, 25% and 10% lower feed consumption, live weight gain and feed to gain ratio, respectively, than the control group fedad libitum. Metabolizability of energy, digestibility of organic matter, crude protein, crude fat and N-retention were significantly increased by 4, 3, 6, 11 and 10%, respectively, in the DON group of the restrictively fed pigs. In average up to 43.2% of the ingested DON, as the parent toxin in both groups, was eliminated with the urine and up to 3.0% with faeces. Maximal dextran production (54–55 g/l) by the bacterium Leuconostoc mesenteroides strain V-2317D was observed in molasses-containing media in the presence of 17.5% glucose at pHinit 6.75. The beginning of dextran production depended on the amount of inoculate; maximum yield was observed at a shaker rate of 200 rpm. The effect of pH, aeration and mixing on the growth and production of carbonyl reductase by Candida viswanathii was investigated in a 6.6-l fermentor. Controlling the pH at 8.0 had a very significant effect on the enzyme production. Aeration and agitation influenced the dissolved oxygen concentration which in turn affected growth as well as enzyme production. A maximum carbonyl reductase activity (53 Umg−1) was attained in 24 h under the optimal cultivation conditions of controlled pH at 8.0, aeration rate 1 vvm and an agitation speed of 250 rpm at 25°C. The enzyme activity was twice as high (56 Umg−1) in the fermentor as compared to a shake flask. Further, the duration of growth and enzyme production in the fermentor was shortened. Cells cultivated under the optimized conditions were used for the preparative scale reduction of N, N-dimethyl-(3-keto)-2-thienyl-propanamine to (S)-N, N-dimethyl-(3-hydroxy)-2-thienyl-propanamine, a key intermediate in the production of the important antidepressant drug (S)-duloxetine.  相似文献
