The removal of color from aquatic systems caused by presence of synthetic dyes is extremely important from the environmental viewpoint because most of these dyes are toxic, mutagenic and carcinogenic. In this present study, the yellow passion fruit (Passiflora edulis Sims. f. flavicarpa Degener) peel a powdered solid waste, was tested as an alternative low-cost adsorbent for the removal of a basic dye, methylene blue (MB), from aqueous solutions. Adsorption of MB onto this natural adsorbent was studied by batch adsorption isotherms at room temperature. The effects of shaking time and pH on adsorption capacity were studied. An alkaline pH was favorable for the adsorption of MB. The contact time required to obtain the maximum adsorption was 56 h at 25 degrees C. Yellow passion fruit peel may be used as an alternative adsorbent to remove MB from aqueous solutions.  相似文献

Biosorption can be used as a cost effective and efficient technique for the removal of toxic heavy metals from wastewater. Waste materials from industries such as food processing and agriculture may act as biosorbents. This study investigates the removal of cadmium by fruit wastes (derived from several citrus fruits, apples and grapes). Citrus peels were identified as the most promising biosorbent due to high metal uptake in conjunction with physical stability. Uptake was rapid with equilibrium reached after 30-80 min depending on the particle size (0.18-0.9 mm). Sorption kinetics followed a second-order model. Sorption equilibrium isotherms could be described by the Langmuir model in some cases, whereas in others an S-shaped isotherm was observed, that did not follow the Langmuir isotherm model. The metal uptake increased with pH, with uptake capacities ranging between 0.5 and 0.9 meq/g of dry peel. Due to their low cost, good uptake capacity, and rapid kinetics, citrus peels are a promising biosorbent material warranting further study.  相似文献

Coir pith was chemically modified for the adsorption of cobalt(II) ions from aqueous solution. Chemical modification was done by esterification using succinic anhydride followed by activation with NaHCO(3) in order to improve the adsorption of Co(II). Adsorptive removal of Co(II) from aqueous solution onto modified coir pith was evaluated in batch studies under varying conditions of agitation time and metal ion concentration to assess the kinetic and equilibrium parameters. A pseudo-second-order kinetic model fitted well for the sorption of Co(II) onto modified coir pith. Sorption kinetics showed that the loading of Co(II) by this material was quite fast under ambient conditions. The Langmuir and Freundlich equilibrium isotherm models provided excellent fits for the adsorption data, with R(2) of 0.99 and 0.98, respectively. After esterification, the maximum Co(II) sorption loading Q(0); was greatly improved. It is evident that chemically modified adsorbent exhibits better Co(II) removal capability than raw adsorbent suggesting that surface modification of the adsorbent generates more adsorption sites on its solid surface for metal adsorption. A complete recovery of the adsorbed metal ions from the spent adsorbent was achieved by using 1.0N HCl.  相似文献

Heavy metals in the soil and ground water have endangered our environment and human bodies by direct or indirect pathways. Currently, bioremediation is a developing process that offers the possibility to destroy various contaminants using natural biological activity. Biopolymers are industrially attractive because of their capability of lowering transition metal ion concentrations to parts per billion, they are widely available, and they are environmentally safe. This paper deals with the preparation of an ethylamine-modified biopolymer (chitosan) and carbon from biowaste (rice husk) composite beads (EAM-CCRCB) for metal ion removal. The prepared adsorbent was used for the adsorption of hexavalent chromium ions from aqueous solutions. The activation and surface properties of the adsorbent were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analyses. The effect of process variables such as initial metal ion concentration, adsorbent dosage, and pH of the solution on the performance of percentage removal and adsorption capacity were studied. Various isotherm and kinetic models were fitted with experimental data to describe the solute interaction and nature of adsorption with the adsorbent through batch studies. Mass thermodynamic parameters were determined. Regeneration studies were attempted to check the stability and activity of the adsorbent.  相似文献

The novel biosorbent silk cotton hull, an agrowaste material, has been successfully utilized for the removal of cadmium(II) from aqueous solutions. The adsorption of cadmium onto three kinds of activated biosorbent has been studied: modified by concentrated sulfuric acid alone (AC), a mixture of concentrated sulfuric acid and hydrogen peroxide (AC1), and a mixture of concentrated sulfuric acid and ammonium persulfate (AC2). The adsorption studies were carried out to optimize the process parameters such as pH, adsorbent dosage, contact time, and initial metal ion concentration. Maximum metal removal was observed at pH 7.0 with a contact time of 90 min at stirring speed of 200 rpm with an adsorbent dosage of 4.0 g L?1. The sorption isotherms were studied using the Langmuir, Freundlich, and Tempkin isotherm models. The maximum adsorption capacities were 100.00, 142.86, and 142.87 mg g?1 for AC, AC1, and AC2, respectively. Accordingly, the surface modification of the activated carbons AC1 and AC2 enhanced cadmium removal greatly. The experiments demonstrated that the removal of metal ions followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The sorption mechanism is discussed in terms of the activated surface properties. A relationship between the oxygen content and sorption was found in this novel material. Desorption experiments were carried out using hydrochloric acid with a view to generate the spent adsorbent and to recover the adsorbed metal ions.  相似文献

Excess of copper ion (>2 mg/L) in water is toxic to human beings and the ecosystem. Various water treatment technologies for copper remediation have been investigated in the past. Along with industrial effluents, Bordeaux mixture is also a noteworthy copper contamination source in the agricultural ecosystem. In our study, the biosorbent efficiency of dried orange peel was investigated through an environment-friendly process for the removal of cupric ions. Effects of pH, adsorbate concentration, adsorbent dosage, and temperature for the removal of Cu (II) were studied. Slightly acidic environment (pH = 6) was found to be optimum for removal of copper. The equilibrium data were well fitted with the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. The surface morphology of the adsorbent was studied using scanning electron microscope. Crystalline nonhomogenous surface was observed after copper adsorption. Desorption study indicated that 0.1N H2SO4 is the best eluent for the removal of adsorbed copper from the powdered dried orange peel.  相似文献

Moringa oliferia seed pod was modified using orthophosphoric acid (H3PO4) and used as adsorbent for sequestering Rhodamine B (Rh-B) dye from aqueous solution. The acid-modified adsorbent (MOSPAC) was characterized using Scanning Electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier Transform Infra Red (FTIR), Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX), pH point of zero charge (pHpzc) and Boehm Titration (BT) techniques, respectively. Operational parameters such as contact time, initial dye concentration, adsorbent dosage, pH and solution temperature were studied in batch process. Optimum dye adsorption was observed at pH 3.01. Equilibrium adsorption data was tested data using four different isotherm models: Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin and Dubinin-Radushkevich. Langmuir isotherm model fitted most with maximum monolayer adsorption capacity of 1250 mg g–1. Pseudo-second-order kinetic model provided the best correlation for the experimental data. Thermodynamic study showed that the process is endothermic, spontaneous and feasible. MOSPAC is an effective adsorbent for the removal of RhB dye from aqueous solutions.  相似文献

A combination of olive pomace after solvent extraction and charcoal produced from the solid waste of olive oil press industry was used as an adsorbent for the removal of methylene blue (MB) dye from aqueous solutions. Batch tests showed that up to 80% of dye was removed when the dye concentration was 10 mg/ml and the sorbent concentration was 45 mg/ml. An increase in the olive pomace concentration resulted in greater dye removal from aqueous solution, and an increase in MB dye concentration at constant adsorbent concentration increased the dye loading per unit weigh of adsorbent. In the kinetic of the adsorbent process, the adsorption data followed the second-order kinetic model better than first order kinetic model. Charcoal showed higher sorption capacity (uptake) than that of olive pomace. In the fixed bed adsorption experiment, the breakthrough curves showed constant pattern behavior, typical of favorable isotherms. The breakthrough time increased with increasing bed height, decreasing flow rate and decreasing influent concentration and methylene blue dye uptake. The uptake of MB dye was significantly increased when a mixture of olive pomace and charcoal was packed in the column in a multi-layer fashion. Different models were used to describe the behavior of this packed-sorption process.  相似文献

Finding appropriate adsorbent may improve the quality of drinking water in those regions where arsenic (As) and fluoride (F?) are present in geological formations. In this study, we evaluated the efficiency of potato peel and rice husk ash (PPRH-ash)-derived adsorbent for the removal of As and F from contaminated water. Evaluation was done in batch adsorption experiments, and the effect of pH, initial adsorbate concentration, contact time, and adsorbent dose were studied. Characteristics of adsorbents were analyzed using scanning electron micropcope (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Both the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models fitted well for F? and As sorption process. The maximum adsorption capacity of adsorbent for As and F? was 2.17 μg g?1 and 2.91 mg g?1, respectively. The As and Fi removal was observed between pH 7 and 9. The sorption process was well explained with pseudo-second order kinetic model. Arsenic adsorption was not decreased in the presence of carbonate and sulfate. Results from this study demonstrated potential utility of this agricultural biowaste, which could be developed into a viable filtration technology for As and F? removal in As- and F-contaminated water streams.  相似文献

Adsorption kinetic and equilibrium of a basic dye (Astrazon Yellow 7GL) from aqueous solutions at various initial dye concentration (50-300 mg/l), pH (4-10), adsorbent dosage (2-8 g/l), particle size (354-846 microm) and temperature (30-50 degrees C) on wheat bran were studied in a batch mode operation. The result showed that the amount adsorbed of the dye increased with increasing initial dye concentration and contact time, whereas particle size and pH had no significant affect on the amount of dye adsorbed by the adsorbent. A comparison of kinetic models on the overall adsorption rate showed that dye/adsorbent system was best described by the pseudo second-order rate model. The removal rate was also dependent on both external mass transfer and intra-particle diffusion. The low value of the intraparticle diffusivity, 10(-11) cm2/s, indicated the significant influence of intraparticle diffusion on the kinetic control. The adsorption capacity (Q0) calculated from the Langmuir isotherm was 69.06 mg/g for at pH 5.6, 303 K for the particle size of 354 microm. The experimental data yielded excellent fits with Langmuir and Tempkin isotherm equations. Different thermodynamic parameters showed that the reaction was spontaneous and endothermic in nature.  相似文献

The biosorption of zinc from model solution as well as wastewater by Arthrospira (Spirulina) platensis biomass was studied. Adsorption capacity of the biosorbent was investigated as a function of contact time between adsorbent and zinc, the initial metals and sorbent concentration, pH value, and temperature. The ability of Arthrospira biomass for zinc biosorption exhibited a maximum at the pH range 4–8. Equilibrium data fitted well with the Langmuir model as well as the Freundlich model with maximum adsorption capacity of 7.1 mg/g. The pseudo second-order model was found to correlate well with the experimental data. Different thermodynamic parameters, ΔG°, ΔH° and ΔS° were evaluated and it has been found that the sorption was feasible, spontaneous, and endothermic in nature. The process of zinc removal from industrial effluent was studied at different time of sorbat–sorbent interaction and different sorbent dosage. Maximum zinc removal (83%) was obtained at sorbent concentration 60 g/L during 1-h experiment. The results indicate that Arthrospira platensis biomass could be effectively used for zinc removal from industrial effluents.  相似文献

The preparation of activated carbon from apricot stone with H2SO4 activation and its ability to remove a basic dye, astrazon yellow 7GL, from aqueous solutions were reported in this study. The adsorbent was characterized by FTIR, BET and SEM, respectively. The effects of various experimental parameters, such as initial dye concentration, pH, adsorbent dosage and temperature were investigated in a batch-adsorption technique. The optimum conditions for removal of the basic dye were found to be pH 10, 6 g/l of adsorbent dosage and equilibrium time of 35 min, respectively. A comparison of three kinetic models, the pseudo first-order, second-order and diffusion controlled kinetic models, on the basic dye-adsorbent system showed that the removal rate was heavily dependent on diffusion controlled kinetic models. The adsorption isotherm data were fitted well to Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. The adsorption capacity was calculated as 221.23 mg/g at 50 °C. Thermodynamics parameters were also evaluated. The values of enthalpy and entropy were 49.87 kJ/mol and 31.93 J/mol K, respectively, indicating that this process was spontaneous and endothermic. The experimental studies were indicated that ASC had the potential to act as an alternative adsorbent to remove the basic dye from aqueous solutions.  相似文献

The shell of the seed of Chrysophyllum albidum carbon was used to adsorb lead (Pb) from aqueous solution, the sorption process with respect to its equilibria and kinetics as well as the effects of pH, contact time, adsorbent mass, adsorbate concentration, and particle size on adsorption were also studied. The most effective pH range was found to be between 4.5 and 5 for the sorption of the metal ion. The first-order rate equation by Lagergren was tested on the kinetic data and the adsorption process followed first-order rate kinetics. Isotherm data were analyzed for possible agreement with the Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherms; the Freundlich and Langmuir models for dynamics of metal ion uptake proposed in this work fitted the experimental data reasonably well. However, equilibrium sorption data were better represented by Langmuir model than Freundlich. The adsorption capacity calculated from Langmuir isotherm was 72.1 mg Pb (II) g- 1 at initial pH of 5.0 at 30°C for the particle size of 1.00 to 1.25 mm with the use of 2.0 g/100 ml adsorbent mass. The structural features of the adsorbent were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometry; the presence of hydroxyl, carbonyl, amide, and phosphate groups confirms the potential mechanism adsorption of the adsorbent. This readily available adsorbent is efficient in the uptake of Pb (II) ion in aqueous solution, thus, it could be an excellent alternative for the removal of heavy metals and organic matter from water and wastewater.  相似文献

Varying the parameters such as agitation time, dye concentration, adsorbent dose, pH and temperature carried out the potential feasibility of thermally activated coir pith carbon prepared from coconut husk for removal of methylene blue. Greater percentage of dye was removed with decrease in the initial concentration of dye and increase in amount of adsorbent used. Kinetic study showed that the adsorption of dye on coir pith carbon was a gradual process. Lagergren first-order, second-order, intra particle diffusion model and Bangham were used to fit the experimental data. Equilibrium isotherms were analysed by Langmuir, Freundlich, Dubnin-Radushkevich, and Tempkin isotherm. The adsorption capacity was found to be 5.87 mg/g by Langmuir isotherm for the particle size 250-500 microm. The equilibrium time was found to be 30 and 60 min for 10 and 20 mg/L and 100 min for 30, 40 mg/L dye concentrations, respectively. A maximum removal of 97% was obtained at natural pH 6.9 for an adsorbent dose of 100 mg/50 mL and 100% removal was obtained for an adsorbent dose of 600 mg/50 mL of 10 mg/L dye concentration. The pH effect and desorption studies suggest that chemisorption might be the major mode of the adsorption process. The change in entropy (DeltaS0) and heat of adsorption (DeltaH0) of coir pith carbon was estimated as 117.20 J/mol/K and 30.88 kJ/mol, respectively. The high negative value of change in Gibbs free energy indicates the feasible and spontaneous adsorption of methylene blue on coir pith carbon.  相似文献

Citrus limon possesses a high content and large variety of monoterpenoids, especially in the glands of the fruit flavedo. The genes responsible for the production of these monoterpenes have never been isolated. By applying a random sequencing approach to a cDNA library from mRNA isolated from the peel of young developing fruit, four monoterpene synthase cDNAs were isolated that appear to be new members of the previously reported tpsb family. Based on sequence homology and phylogenetic analysis, these sequences cluster in two separate groups. All four cDNAs could be functionally expressed in Escherichia coli after removal of their plastid targeting signals. The main products of the enzymes in assays with geranyl diphosphate as substrate were (+)-limonene (two cDNAs) (-)-beta-pinene and gamma-terpinene. All enzymes exhibited a pH optimum around 7; addition of Mn(2+) as bivalent metal ion cofactor resulted in higher activity than Mg(2+), with an optimum concentration of 0.6 mm. K(m) values ranged from 0.7 to 3.1 microm. The four enzymes account for the production of 10 out of the 17 monoterpene skeletons commonly observed in lemon peel oil, corresponding to more than 90% of the main components present.  相似文献

Defective coffee press cake, a residue from coffee oil biodiesel production, was evaluated as an adsorbent for removal of basic dyes (methylene blue – MB) from aqueous solutions. The adsorbent was prepared by microwave treatment, providing a significant reduction in processing time coupled to an increase in adsorption capacity in comparison to conventional carbonization in a muffle furnace. Batch adsorption tests were performed at 25 °C and the effects of particle size, contact time, adsorbent dosage and initial solution pH were investigated. Adsorption kinetics was better described by a second-order model. The experimental adsorption equilibrium data were fitted to Langmuir, Freundlich and Tempkin adsorption models, with Langmuir providing the best fit. The results presented in this study show that microwave activation presents great potential as an alternative method in the production of adsorbents.  相似文献

This research deals with the exploitation of highly available and renewable marine biomass, Posidonia oceanica (L.) fibres as low cost biosorbent for the removal of metal-complexed textile dyestuff from aqueous medium, and the investigation of the probably involved physiochemical mechanisms. Experiments were carried out in batch reactor. Firstly, the adsorption process was studied as a function of initial solution pH and contact time under different initial dye concentration. The results showed that the highest dye adsorption capacity was found at pH 2 under a constant temperature of 30 °C, and the equilibrium state was reached within 48 h of exposure time. Secondly, several adsorption kinetic models were applied to fit the experimental data, namely Lagergren irreversible first-order, Reversible first-order, Pseudo-second-order, Elovich, Ritchie and intraparticle diffusion models. The proposed explanations were deduced from the theoretical assumptions behind the most appropriate model(s), which could satisfactorily describe the present biosorption phenomenon. The interpretation of the related results have shown that, with R2 of about 99%, the pseudo-second order model is the most suitable dynamic theory describing the biosorption of metal complex dye onto P. oceanica fibres, predicting therefore a chemisorption process.  相似文献
