The biological control potential ofEdovum puttleri Grissell, an exotic egg parasite ofLeptinotarsa decemlineata (Say), was examined in experimental potato plots. The parasite does not overwinter in Maryland, but through annual inoculative releases it consistently parasitized Colorado potato beetle (CPB) egg masses throughout the season. Approximately 50% of all egg masses collected were parasitized and maximum parasitism byE. puttleri occurred in egg masses produced by first generation adults.Edovum puttleri reproduced and maintained itself in potato plots for 15 weeks. The random sampling of CPB egg masses to evaluate the parasite in the field is described.   相似文献

Selection byTrichogramma nubilale (Ertle & Davis) for different aged egg masses ofOstrinia nubilalis (Hübner) was examined by separating components of parasitism. FemaleT. nubilale were exposed to egg masses of 2 different ages (freshly laid egg masses versus 1, 2, 3 or 4 day old egg masses), and the age of the initial egg mass inspected, number and percent of eggs and egg masses parasitized, and the emergence rate of pharate parasitoids was recorded. When there was a large difference in age between young and old egg masses, ♀♀ inspected initially more young egg masses (>2 days difference), parasitized a greater percent of young egg masses (>2 days difference), and parasitized more eggs/parasitized egg mass in young egg masses (>3 days difference) than old egg masses. Females did not discriminate between host age when hosts were similar in age. Successful emergence of parasitoids was greater from younger eggs than older eggs, although emergence was better from one-day-old eggs than from fresh eggs. These results imply that when the hosts were sufficiently different in age, ♀♀ were attracted to younger egg masses more than older egg masses, and they tended to remain ovipositing for longer periods of time on younger egg masses than older egg masses. Moreover, ♀♀ appeared to prefer to oviposit in hosts in which their young are more likely to complete development.   相似文献

Summary It has been observed that in the case ofVigna radiata andGlycine max incorporation of suitable strain of Azotobacter gave higher yield than obtained by the use of Rhizobium as inoculant. In the case ofVigna radiata even a strain of Azotobacter isolated from the rhizosphere of berseem gave similar yields as Rhizobium. In the case ofPisum sativum association of Rhizobium with a strain ofAzotobacter chroococcum isolated from the rhizosphere of pea gave numerically higher yield than Rhizobium alone. It may be possible that statistically higher yield may be obtained when a suitable strain of Azotobacter is used after screening a large number of strains of Azotobacter from the rhizosphere of pea.  相似文献

Parasitism ofOstrinia nubilalis egg masses byTrichogramma minutum was observed in maize-bare ground monocultures and polycultures of maize/bean/squash and maize/clover. Parasitism rates were 1.9 times higher in monocultures than in polycultures; seasonal phenology of parasitism, however, was similar in both. Parasitism first occurred during the late whorl/early tassel stage of maize; peak parasitism occurred during the mid to late tassel stage, and then dropped off rapidly. We speculate that direct predation of egg masses, and ammensal preemptive competition for egg masses byColeomegilla maculata may have contributed to the decline in parasitism rates in both monocultures and polycultures during the latter part of the season.   相似文献

Two synthetic oligonucleotide probe mixtures, whose sequences were inferred from two separate stretches of amino acids, one closer to the carboxy terminal and the other closer to the amino terminal, of ferredoxin I protein ofAzotobacter vinelandii, were used to select ferredoxin I gene clones from a cosmid gene library ofAzotobacter vinelandii. Restriction analysis revealed that 7 out of 10 selected clones were of the same type. All these clones were found to hybridize withfixABCX genes ofRhizobium meliloti.  相似文献

The reproduction and development of the prosobranch gastropodAlaba vladivostokensis Bartsch were studied. In Vostok Bay,A. vladivostokensis reproduces in the warmest season at water temperatures of 19–23°C. The females lay egg masses in the shape of flat, coiled bands on eelgrass leaves and on sargosso thalluses. The total period of development from egg laying to larval settling takes 25–27 days. The reproduction and development patterns and larval morphology ofA. vladivostokensis are similar to that ofAustralaba picta (A. Adams), which inhabits the coast of Japan. It is suggested that the population ofA. vladivostokensis in Peter the Great Bay should considered as part of the wide geographical range ofA. picta.  相似文献

Attempts to isolate, from soil, strains ofBdellovibrio bacteriovorus parasitic on variousAzotobacter andRhizobium species were not successful. However, a strain ofBdellovibrio bacteriovorus isolated from soil as a parasite ofEscherichia coli was shown to produce plaques onAzotobacter chroococcum as well but not onAzotobacter vinelandii or variousRhizobium species.The nutritive conditions required for thisBdellovibrio strain to yield discrete countable plaques onAzotobacter chroococcum plates were examined, and it was proposed thatAzotobacter slime be used as a preservative agent for the maintenance ofBdellovibrio bacteriovorus strains in frozen culture.This research was authorized for publication as paper No. 3309 in the journal series of the Pennsylvania Agricultural Experiment Station, on October 3, 1967.  相似文献

Summary Under controlled conditions in pots filled with sand, vermiculite and field soil, inoculation withA. brasilense-Cd ATCC 29729 or withAzotobacter chroococcum caused increases above controls in the weight and N content of panicles ofSetaria italica. In no case, however, did N increases in test plants exceed the initial total N content. High acetylene reduction activities (1,000–2,000 nmole/h/pot) could be found only in plants inoculated withAzospirillum. Inoculation withAzospirillum (strain-Cd) in the field caused a significant increase above noninoculated controls of 18.5% in shoot dry weight, ofSetaria italica. Azotobacter caused a non significant increase of 8%. No significant differences were found between yields ofSetaria italica grown in soil inoculated withA. chroococcum, and those of plants grown in the presence ofA. vinelandii. A. brasilense-Cd was more effective in the field thanA. brasilense Sp-7 ATCC 29145. The results suggest that Azospirillum may increase yields ofS. italica more efficiently than Azotobacter under local field conditions.  相似文献

After being laid on emergent aquatic vegetation, the egg masses ofLethocerus deyrollei are brooded by the male. In laboratory studies, females were observed to destroy egg masses and ingest the fluid of eggs. Brooding males fought with these attackers at first, but then gave up the defense and mated with them. After destroying the egg masses, females laid new ones at the same sites on the same night or the following one, and males brooded the new offspring. The population density of this species is very low. Most males engage in brooding and cease to become acceptable mates after most of the females lay the first egg masses. It is costly for females to search out free males in the aquatic vegetation. By destroying egg masses, however, individual females can gain new mates with little exertion and can make them brood their own offspring. Furthermore, the survival of their own offspring increases with the elimination of their competitors.  相似文献

An investigation on the behaviour ofTetrastichus servadeii Domenichini (Hym.: Eulophidae) andOoencyrtus pityocampae Mercet (Hym.: Encyrtidae) was carried out in 2 stands ofPinus nigra Arnold in the Venitian Prealps (NE Italy) by quantitative observations in the field and by trapping with different baits. The results indicate that: 1)O.pityocampae is caught by traps baited with pityolure, the synthetic sex pheromone of the host, whileT. servadeii was never caught. 2) The host selection process ofT. servadeii seems to be associated with the host plant ofThaumetopoea pityocampa (Denis & Schiffermüller) and with the aggregative behaviour of the parasitoid females. 3) The frequency distribution ofT. servadeii on the egg masses follows the negative binomial distribution; the degree of aggregation decreases with the egg mass age. These results may be taken into account in the utilization of egg parasitoids for the biological control ofTh. pityocampa.   相似文献

Distribution ofChilo partellus egg masses was studied in field, greenhouse, and laboratory experiments. The eggs were laid in batches mainly on the lower side and the lower leaves of the plant. The egg batch size ranged from 1 to 169 eggs, with a median of 33.5 eggs per batch (average, 40.5). Oviposition ofC. partellus is described at two levels. The first level, choice of oviposition plants, followed a random distribution. The second level, number of egg batches per plant, followed an aggregated distribution in the field, where more than one egg batch was deposited on the same plant by the same female, which was found on 25% of the oviposition plants. A mechanism for egg-layingC. partellus females to perceive preceding oviposition or injured plants could not be detected. Oviposition site choice seemed to be mediated by tactile stimuli.  相似文献

Age-related oviposition patterns ofOstrinia nubilalis were studied at three population densities in the laboratory by releasing newly eclosed adults in wire-screened cages and analyzing their oviposition throughout the adult stage with digital analysis. Oviposition sequences of individual females depositing egg masses were documented on the third and seventh nights after eclosion with a video camcorder. During a sequence, a female produced an egg in an average time of 15 or 26 s on the third and seventh nights, respectively, and completed depositing an egg mass the size of 20–39 eggs in an average time of 316 and 525 s, respectively. Females were not easily disturbed during egg mass deposition and pulsated their abdomen before deposition of each egg. Females produced few egg masses the first night after eclosion. Oviposition increased on nights 2 and 3 but declined steadily thereafter as females matured. Females older than 6 nights produced fewer egg masses; the proportion of egg masses with fewer than 20 eggs increased gradually. By the end of the adults' lifetime, nearly 100% of the egg masses had fewer than 20 eggs. The data are fundamental to our research to define the role of phytochemicals in modifying oviposition behavior of the European corn borer.  相似文献

In species that lack parental care and whose larvae are restricted to a given space throughout development, choice of egg-laying or reproductive sites often greatly influences fitness. Furthermore, reproductive success of individuals may be affected not only by conditions of the breeding area but also by the time when they start to breed, because intraspecific variation in the timing of breeding may result in asymmetric competition between larvae. We addressed these issues in an experimental and field study of the Japanese brown frog, Rana japonica. We tested whether the survival success of larvae decreased with an increase in the number of deposited egg masses and with a greater delay in oviposition. We found that the number of egg masses and timing of oviposition together significantly predicted larval survival per clutch. Moreover, we observed the natural oviposition of R. japonica to examine the prediction that if the density of larvae and the timing of oviposition affect survivorship of larvae, R. japonica will avoid depositing eggs in pools in which egg masses have already been deposited. We found that for small pools only, R. japonica tended to favor oviposition at unoccupied pools (those lacking egg masses and larvae) in the spawning season. For large pools, however, adults favored those already occupied by egg masses in the spawning period. The density of egg masses and tadpoles or the timing of oviposition may have less effect on spawning or the survival of tadpoles in large pools than in small pools.  相似文献

The spawning habits of the sea ravenHemitripterus villosus were investigated by scuba diving at shallow rocky bottom sites around Bolshoi Pelis Island (Peter the Great Bay, Sea of Japan). Spawning occurs in September, when the surface water temperature drops. The optimum spawning temperature is 17–18°C. The fish density in nest sites reaches 120/300 m2. The mean individual fecundity is about 10000 eggs. Over 35% of the egg masses ofH. villosus are eaten by echinoderms, primarilyPatiria pectinifera andStrongylocentrotus nudus. Since fecundity is relatively low and parents do not take care of the egg masses, predation can strongly affect the abundance of this species.  相似文献

Rocket line immunoelectrophoresis was used to study the taxonomy ofAzotobacter andAzomonas assessed by reaction with antiserum to the AVO2 strain ofAzotobacter. Forty-five cultures, comprising seventeen species in five genera, showed that antigen “β”, like high-titer somatic agglutination, was restricted to all 11 strains ofAzotobacter vinelandii and to one strain which has been namedAzotobacter macrocytogenes (10EM). A comparative study of the functional response ofColeomegilla maculataDeGeer (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) fourth instars was conducted under laboratory, greenhouse, and field conditions. In the laboratory, individual larvae were placed in 9-cm petri dishes for 24 h, with 1, 3, 5, or 7 Colorado potato beetle (Leptinotarsa decemlineata[Say]) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) egg masses. Each egg mass was standardized at 15 eggs. In the greenhouse and field,C. maculatalarvae were provided with an equivalent of 0.5 to 35L. decemlineataegg masses/m2of potato leaf. Fourth instars ofC. maculataexhibited a type II functional response toL. decemlineataeggs under laboratory, greenhouse, and field conditions. Predator search efficiency was inversely related with prey density. The maximum mean attack rate (8.7 eggs) byC. maculatalarvae in the field was about half the mean attack rate in the laboratory (17.6 eggs) and greenhouse (20.1 eggs). The difference in prey density between the laboratory and field seems to have been a major contributing factor in determining the rate of predation, whereas differences in environmental conditions (e.g., temperature and possible alternate food) may explain the differences observed in the predation rate in the greenhouse and field.  相似文献

Carbon monoxide binding and photodissociation (photolysis) properties of cytochrome d in the membrane electron transport particles ofAzotobacter vinelandii were investigated at cold temperature. The Soret absorption spectrum of cytochrome d was revealed. Vibrio cholerae, the etiologic agent of cholera, is autochthonous to various aquatic environments. Recently, it was found that chironomid (nonbiting midges) egg masses serve as a reservoir for the cholera bacterium and that flying chironomid adults are possible windborne carriers of V. cholerae non-O1 non-O139. Chironomids are the most widely distributed insect in freshwater. Females deposit egg masses at the water's edge, and each egg mass contains eggs embedded in a gelatinous matrix. Hemagglutinin/protease, an extracellular enzyme of V. cholerae, was found to degrade chironomid egg masses and to prevent them from hatching. In a yearly survey, chironomid populations and the V. cholerae in their egg masses followed phenological succession and interaction of host–pathogen population dynamics. In this report, it is shown via FISH technique that most of the V. cholerae inhabiting the egg mass are in the viable but nonculturable (VBNC) state. The diversity of culturable bacteria from chironomid egg masses collected from two freshwater habitats was determined. In addition to V. cholerae, representatives of the following genera were isolated: Acinetobacter, Aeromonas, Klebsiella, Shewanella, Pseudomonas, Paracoccus, Exiguobacterium, and unidentified bacteria. Three important human pathogens, Aeromonas veronii, A. caviae, and A. hydrophila, were isolated from chironomid egg masses, indicating that chironomid egg masses may be a natural reservoir for pathogenic Aeromonas species in addition to V. cholerae. All isolates of V. cholerae were capable of degrading chironomid egg masses. This may help explain their host–pathogen relationship with chironomids. In contrast, almost none of the other bacteria that were isolated from the egg masses possessed this ability. Studying the interaction between chironomid egg masses, the bacteria inhabiting them, and V. cholerae could contribute to our understanding of the nature of the V. cholerae–egg mass interactions.  相似文献
