Fed and unfed first instars of the spined assassin bugSinea diadema were paired to evaluate the effects of food deprivation on their behaviour during encounters. Fed nymphs encountering starved 5-day-old nymphs retreated from 69% of the encounters after contacting the starved nymph. In contrast, starved nymphs initiated grappling during 30% of the encounters with fed nymphs and retreated significantly less often than the fed nymphs. When a single fed nymph was placed together with two unfed 3-day-old nymphs in a closed arena, the fed nymphs generally were not the first nymph cannibalized and were the final survivors in 67% of 24 replicates. These results are discussed in the context of the relative costs and benefits of escalating or retreating from encounters.  相似文献

The sequence of events leading to the resolution of agonistic interactions between adult femaleSinea diadema (F.) (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) is described. Contact between these predatory bugs resulted in a series of defensive and offensive actions, including stereotypical posturing and striking movements of the forelegs. Although these encounters usually escalated in intensity and frequency of contact, they rarely resulted in injury or cannibalism. Instead, one individual retreated from the perch. The original resident on the perch retreated in 70% of the encounters. Stridulation was observed during 33% of the encounters. Stridulating individuals retreated more often than their nonstridulating opponents, indicating that stridulation may be a startle mechanism employed by temporarily disadvantaged individuals to escape from encounters. These encounters were conflicts in which the participants are both potential predators and possible prey. The combinations of posturing, striking, and stridulation that occurred during encounters may have provided each bug with information concerning the identity and relative fitness of its opponent. If an individual is fit, it may be advantageous for it to probe the defensive capabilities of its opponent, since its own risk is low, and a less fit opponent could be killed and eaten.  相似文献

This study examines the nature of intraspecific interactions among Nilaparvata lugens (Stål) (Hemiptera: Delphacidae) planthoppers feeding on resistant and susceptible rice varieties. Planthopper nymphs produced less honeydew and gained less weight when feeding on rice variety IR62 (resistant) compared to susceptible rice varieties. A series of bioassays was conducted that varied N. lugens nymph densities on IR62 and IR22 (susceptible). Increasing nymph density facilitated feeding by conspecifics; however, intraspecific competition increased mortality of nymphs on IR62 (but rarely on IR22). Furthermore, nymph weights declined with increasing conspecific density on IR22, and the effects were weak on IR62. More female nymphs than males survived on IR62 but this was not affected by density. Nitrogenous fertilizer increased competition among N. lugens on young plants of IR22, but not on IR62. Results indicate that nymphs have a low efficiency in accessing resources when feeding on IR62, even where the plants have received fertilizer. Female‐biased survival and biomass compensation for mortality may promote population recovery after development on the resistant plant and accelerate adaptation to the resistant variety.  相似文献

【目的】为探究烟蚜茧蜂Aphidius gifuensis对烟蚜Myzus persicae寄生后烟蚜生长发育和繁殖影响及其在烟蚜防控中的作用。【方法】采用室内叶片培养皿法,测定了不同龄期烟蚜(1-4龄若蚜及成蚜)被烟蚜茧蜂寄生后烟蚜当代(F0)及后代(F1)的发育历期、寿命、产仔量。【结果】烟蚜1龄若蚜被烟蚜茧蜂寄生后,1龄若蚜历期受到显著影响,较未被寄生对照缩短了0.65 d (33.00%),而2-4龄若蚜期和成蚜历期未受显著影响;2龄若蚜被寄生后,4龄若蚜和成蚜历期均受到显著影响,较未被寄生的对照分别缩短了1.50 d (100.00%)和0.83 d (100.00%),而2和3龄若蚜期未受显著影响;3龄若蚜被寄生后,4龄若蚜和成蚜期均受到显著影响,较未被寄生对照分别缩短了1.50 d (100.00%)和0.83 d (100.00%),而3龄若蚜期未受显著影响。2龄若蚜被寄生后烟蚜的寿命和产仔量均受到显著影响,寿命较未被寄生对照缩短了8.39 d(54.00%),每雌产仔量较未被寄生对照减少了48.67头(100.00%)。此外,2-3龄若蚜被寄生后其后代(F1)1龄若蚜历期受影响最大,较未被寄生烟蚜后代1龄若蚜期缩短了0.80 d(40.00%),其F1代平均寿命较未被寄生烟蚜后代平均寿命延长了5.72 d(41.20%),但其产仔量与对照差异不显著。【结论】不同龄期烟蚜被烟蚜茧蜂寄生后,其发育历期和寿命比未被寄生的缩短,产仔量比被未寄生的少,但其F1代平均寿命比未被寄生后代烟蚜的长且其产仔量未受显著影响。当代2龄若蚜期是控制烟蚜增长的关键时期。这些结果对确定烟蚜茧蜂防治烟蚜适期及认识其机理具有重要参考意义。  相似文献

Selected nutritional and developmental factors regulating the predatory behavior of first-instar spined assassin bugsSinea diadema (Fabricius) (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) were investigated. The longevity of unfed nymphs provided with free water, bean pod sections, or glucose solutions was not significantly greater than that of unfed nymphs which were not provided with a source of water. First-instarS. diadema that were provided with larvae ofEphestia kuehniella Zeller (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) as prey began feeding 1.9 (±0.9) days after hatching. In contrast, first-instarS. diadema that were provided with conspecifics of the same age did not begin feeding until they were 3.9 (±0.9) days old. These results suggest that the potential nutritional benefits to be gained from feeding equal or outweigh the risk of attacking prey capable of effective self-defense only when nymphs have not fed for 4 days after hatching. Providing the nymphs with water or glucose solutions significantly delayed the onset of conspecific predation. Additional data are presented which demonstrate that first-instarS. diadema are not restrained from preying on siblings by kin recognition.  相似文献

The ability of prey to escape predation often lies in the occurrence and efficacy of their predator avoidance and antipredator behaviors, which are often coupled with specialized morphology. How the use and efficacy of these behaviors change throughout ontogeny may be indicative of the vulnerability and ecological roles these animals experience throughout their lives. We examined the antipredator behavior of a large dragonfly nymph, Anax junius, from a historically fishless pond where these animals have traditionally been classified as top predators. These dragonfly nymphs displayed a series of distinct aggressive antipredator behaviors when grasped that involved stabbing with lateral and posterior spines and seizing with labial hooks. Larger (older) nymphs displayed these aggressive behaviors significantly more than smaller (younger) animals in simulated predation trials. During encounters with live larval salamander predators (Ambystoma tigrinum), all large nymphs, but only 12.5% of small nymphs successfully escaped predation attempts by the amphibians through the use of antipredator behavior. Large nymphs were also significantly more active than smaller nymphs in the presence of salamander larvae. Despite often being considered top predators in fishless ponds, our study demonstrates that their true role is more complex, depending on ontogeny and body size, and that effective antipredator behavior is likely necessary for survival in these systems.  相似文献

Parental care typically enhances offspring fitness at costs for tending parents. Asymmetries in genetic relatedness entail potential conflicts between parents and offspring over the duration and the amount of care. To understand how these conflicts are resolved evolutionarily, it is important to understand how individual condition affects offspring and parental behaviour and whether parents or offspring make active choices in their interactions. Condition effects on offspring have been broadly studied, but the effect of parental condition on parent–offspring interactions is less well understood, in particular in species where care is facultative and offspring have the option to beg for food from the parents or to self‐forage. In this study, we carried out two experiments in the European earwig Forficula auricularia, a system where females provide facultative care, in which we manipulated female condition (through a high‐food and low‐food treatment) and the degree by which mothers and offspring could make active choices. In a first experiment, where female mobility was limited, female condition had no significant effect on the rate of offspring self‐foraging, which increased with nymph age. In a second experiment, nymph access to food was limited and females in poor nutritional condition provided food to significantly fewer nymphs than high condition females. In both experiments, offspring attendance remained at a constantly high level and was independent of female condition even after experimental separation of females and offspring. Our results show that earwig nymphs do not use cues of female condition to adjust rates of self‐foraging, that females control food provisioning depending on their own condition, and that females and nymphs share control over offspring attendance, a form of care not influenced by female condition.  相似文献

The aggressive interactions of Turnstones and Purple Sandpipers feeding in wintering mixed-species wader flocks could be classified into those involving food and those involving space. All observed interspecific encounters were of short duration and were initiated and won by the larger species; the majority did not involve food and were resolved by low-intensity displays. Intraspecific interactions (a greater proportion of which involved food) were also resolved quickly and were usually won by the initiator. Space-related encounters between conspecifics were more likely to be resolved than food-related encounters just by threat displays. Aggression rates increased with flock densities. However, the increase in aggression with density was dependent on the species composition of the flock: both Turnstones and Purple Sandpipers were more likely to be involved in fights (both over food and over space) with conspecifics than with other species, indicating that the aggression costs of flocking were less in mixed-species flocks.  相似文献

The social behavior of five species of Zetoborinae cockroaches is compared with respect to inter-individual interactions of nymphs in the laboratory. These species belong to the same Neotropical subfamily and were characterized as gregarious (Lanxoblatta emarginata, Parasphaeria boleiriana, Phortioeca nimbata, Schultesia lampyridiformis) and solitary (Thanatophyllum akinetum) by previous field studies. Our results show that gregarious species accept closer contacts than does the solitary one. The solitary species did not display especially short, infrequent or less diverse behavioral sequences when forced to remain aggregated, but its interactions are characterized by fewer acts promoting contact and more dominance-like acts. The solitary species symmetrically interacts with conspecifics and does not show specific dispersal-promoting behaviors. This suggests that the solitary behavior observed in the field for species of Zetoborinae mainly results from a passive spacing tendency and a lack of attraction for conspecifics. One of the gregarious species, P. boleiriana, was previously described as subsocial with nymphs remaining with the female in a wood chamber after brood birth. This species does not show a peculiar behavioral repertoire but its interactions are characterized by more dominance-like behaviors than are those of the non-subsocial gregarious species. Abstract. The behavioural mechanisms driving compensatory food consumption in response to dietary dilution as well as the relationship between feeding time and food residence time (i.e. digesta retention time in the gut) were studied using the non-diapausing strain of the grasshopper Melanoplus differentialis (Thomas) (Orthoptera: Acrididae). 3-day-old, sixth-instar nymphs and 3-day-old adults were fed artificial diets containing 1%, 3% and 5% total nitrogen (N) at 30C, LD 14:10h; the feeding behaviour was recorded using electronic monitoring devices connected to microcomputers for 24 h. The percentage of time spent feeding increased linearly as diets were diluted using non-digestible cellulose from 5% to 1% N. This response was due to an increase in the number of meals while the meal duration of a feeding bout was unaltered. Sixth-instar nymphs spent about 40% more time feeding than the larger adults. The increased feeding time in nymphs resulted from both more frequent feeding bouts and longer meal duration. Feeding time and food residence time were highly negatively related.  相似文献

通过建立网室近自然实验种群,结合野生个体观察记述了云南玉溪九香虫Coridius chinensis (Dallas)种群的各虫期形态特征、在云南玉溪红塔区的年生活史、寄主范围、取食偏好、成虫及若虫的行为习性,为该虫的保育和规模化养殖提供依据。结果显示,九香虫卵有绿色和粉色两种生态型,若虫有5个龄期;在云南玉溪红塔区1年仅发生1代,仅以成虫态越冬;红塔区九香虫野生个体主要以佛手瓜和南瓜等葫芦科植物为食;取食偏好选择试验表明该虫最喜取食葫芦,冬瓜和南瓜次之;雌雄成虫可多次交配多次产卵,单雌单次平均产卵量为16.3±6.0粒。研究表明,云南玉溪红塔区的九香虫种群为典型的一化性昆虫,休眠期可达8个月;该虫食性较广,可取食多科植物,但以葫芦科瓜类为主;羽化成虫每年9月中旬至10月上旬陆续从佛手瓜、南瓜等寄主植物上迁至枯树皮下、柴堆等隐蔽场所越冬,翌年4月下旬陆续解除休眠,迁至佛手瓜、南瓜等作物上取食繁殖。  相似文献

Observations of small schools of squids in captivity suggested that dominance relationships among males were based upon major differences in the frequency or duration of their agonistic behavior, but staged contests showed few differences. During staged contests, squids exhibited up to 21 separate behaviors. Some contests included a complex array of visual signals and side-by-side posturing (Lateral Display) followed by physical contact during Fin beating. There was behavioral variability and step-wise escalation during the contests: squids performed either 1. long sequences of visual signaling followed by Chasing and Fleeing; or 2. short sequences of visual signaling followed by physical Fin beating and ending with Chasing and Fleeing. Size influenced outcome in all contests; larger males were more likely to win the contest. Size had no effect on contest duration, but contest duration was shorter when resource value was high, especially when a male established temporary ownership of a female. We speculate that when the perceived resource value is high, male squids are more likely to engage in a shorter yet riskier fighting tactic.  相似文献

【目的】昆虫感知外界营养状态,在体内营养信号通过许多信号通路进行传递,进而调控昆虫的生长和繁殖。本研究旨在为营养调控褐飞虱Nilaparvata lugens生长和繁殖的分子机制作出初步探索。【方法】在不同营养条件[100%浓度饲料(全纯人工饲料D-97, 对照)、50%浓度人工饲料和25%浓度人工饲料]下饲喂褐飞虱3龄第2天若虫至成虫,统计体重、发育历期、存活率和每卵巢成熟卵量;利用荧光定量PCR检测羽化后第2天褐飞虱成虫不同组织(卵巢、脂肪体和其他组织)中IIS, TOR以及AMPK信号通路相关基因(InR1, InR2, AKT, FoxO, TOR, S6K, 4EBP, AMPKα,AMPKβ和AMPKγ)的表达量;利用Western blot方法检测羽化后第6天褐飞虱成虫卵巢和其他组织中Akt, FoxO和AMPK蛋白磷酸化水平;同时检测羽化后第6天褐飞虱成虫不同组织中的ROS水平以及不同龄期褐飞虱体内保幼激素(juvenile hormone, JH)和蜕皮激素(20-hydroxyecdysone, 20E)滴度。【结果】与饲喂100%浓度人工饲料的对照相比,用低浓度人工饲料饲喂褐飞虱至成虫导致5龄第2天至成虫体重显著降低,从3龄第2天若虫至成虫发育历期缩短,死亡率提高,每卵巢成熟卵量显著降低。取食低浓度人工饲料后,羽化后第2天成虫IIS, TOR以及AMPK信号通路相关基因InR2, TOR, 4EBP, AMPKα在卵巢、脂肪体和其他组织中, AKT, S6K和AMPKγ在脂肪体和其他组织中,以及InR1, FoxO和AMPKβ在其他组织中表达量较对照均显著下降,但卵巢中InR1, AKT, FoxO和AMPKγ的表达量相对稳定;羽化后第6天成虫卵巢和其他组织中AKT, FoxO以及AMPK的磷酸化水平显著增加。随着人工饲料饲喂浓度的降低,羽化后第6天褐飞虱成虫不同组织中的ROS水平显著增加。不同营养条件下褐飞虱4龄第2天若虫体内JH滴度无显著差异,低营养条件下5龄第2天若虫体内JH滴度较对照显著降低,而在羽化后第2天成虫体内JH滴度则较对照显著增加;低营养条件导致褐飞虱若虫以及成虫体内20E滴度均显著增加。【结论】褐飞虱在面临营养缺失的情况下,营养信号传导通路(IIS, TOR以及APMK通路)的关键基因表达均下降,而ROS水平显著上升,通过调节AKT, FoxO以及AMPK的磷酸化水平,进而影响JH以及20E的生物合成。  相似文献

We conducted laboratory and field experiments to elucidate the life history of Ixodiphagus hookeri, a parasitoid of the ixodid tick Amblyomma variegatum in Western Kenya. Ixodiphagus hookeri females oviposited in unfed host nymphs as well as engorged nymphs, but rarely in engorged larvae. While I. hookeri developed to adults in engorged nymphs, the eggs laid in unfed nymphs disappeared within 2 days after oviposition. As temperature increased, development time of I. hookeri from oviposition to adult emergence in engorged nymphs decreased from 46 days at 23 °C to 35 days at 28 °C, and their immature survival in engorged nymphs decreased from 67% at 23 °C to 22% at 28 °C. No parasitoid adult emerged from hosts at 30 °C. Individual hosts parasitized by single females produced 42–53 adult wasps, 73% of which were females. As a typical pro-ovigenic species, I. hookeri females had an average of 84 mature eggs at emergence and lived only for a few days. When laboratory-reared, unfed nymphs of A. variegatum were attached to cattle for 4–9 days in subsistence farmers’ fields in Western Kenya, 25% of the engorged nymphs and 4% of the unfed nymphs on cattle were parasitized by I. hookeri, demonstrating that I. hookeri females search for and oviposit in A. variegatum nymphs on cattle. Unlike other strains of I. hookeri that overwinter as eggs in unfed nymphs, I. hookeri could continuously reproduce throughout the year in Western Kenya.  相似文献

Competitive interactions in arthropod predators are well-known, but positive interactions have received less attention. The two-spotted stinkbugPerillus bioculatus often feeds gregariously on leaf beetle larvae and caterpillar prey. Consequences of prey sharing amongP. bioculatus conspecifics of dissimilar size (instar) was studied using Colorado potato beetle (CPB) prey. Rearing second-instar (N2) nymphs ofP. bioculatus with an N5 conspecific facilitated early feeding on L4 CPB larvae (a difficult prey to handle by N2 nymphs but not by N5’s), thus increasing survival and accelerating development. One in every 20 cases ofP. bioculatus foraging in the field was accounted for by pairs or small groups of mostly feeding individuals. CPB egg masses and L4’s represented a disproportionate number of cases of aggregated feeding byP. bioculatus, compared to feeding singly. Small CPB larvae decreased in the diet of aggregated stinkbugs compared to L4 larvae and egg masses, suggesting that sharing these prey may be favorable or unavoidable. In a field test measuring residence/survival of N2’s limited to L4 prey, the N2’s rate of residence/survival increased significantly when large nymphs acting as food providers were also present. The function of communal feeding inP. bioculatus is discussed, as well as the potential for greater impact on prey density that may be expected from tolerance to opportunistic feeding by conspecifics in slightly gregarious predators.  相似文献

Odonate larvae are important predators in the littoral zone of freshwater systems, and in an effort understand their population dynamics, researchers have described and analyzed many of their behaviors. The behavior we call abdomen wave has been considered to be both an aid to respiration and an aggressive display to conspecifics. We found that, under laboratory conditions, abdomen wave was not increased when the oxygen concentration was low or when larvae were in the presence of conspecifics. These results suggest the behavior is not involved in oxygen uptake or in agonistic interactions. The behavior was increased when larvae had food in their guts and was most dramatically increased in the hours preceding a molt. Abdomen wave may function to loosen the exoskeleton prior to molting and/or release of metabolites.  相似文献

为探讨寄生蜂在Q型烟粉虱Bemisia tabaci替代B型烟粉虱的过程中是否起作用, 我们在实验室条件(温度27±1℃, 光周期16L∶8D, 相对湿度RH 70%~80%)下, 观察了浅黄恩蚜小蜂Encarsia sophia寄生B型和Q型烟粉虱若虫的行为, 研究了浅黄恩蚜小蜂对B型和Q型烟粉虱若虫的选择性、 烟粉虱生物型对浅黄恩蚜小蜂取食数量及个体发育的影响。结果发现, 浅黄恩蚜小蜂体外检测时间在B型和Q型烟粉虱若虫间差异不显著, 而寄生Q型烟粉虱若虫时的体内检测和产卵时间(190.2±14.6 s)显著高于寄生B型时所用时间(140.0±7.5 s)。在非选择条件下, 浅黄恩蚜小蜂寄生B型烟粉虱若虫的数量(8.1±0.5头)及总产卵量(9.3±0.6粒)显著高于仅提供Q型烟粉虱的寄生数量(6.3±0.5头)及总产卵量(7.0±0.6粒); 而被寄生若虫单头着卵量在处理间差异不显著。在选择性条件下, 该蜂寄生B型烟粉虱若虫量(3.1±0.4头)、总产卵量(3.8±0.5粒)及被寄生若虫单头着卵量(1.2±0.1粒)都显著高于寄生Q型烟粉虱时的情况(1.8±0.3头、1.8±0.4粒、0.7±0.1粒)。被寄生蜂取食的B型与Q型烟粉虱数量间差异不显著, 但对于同一生物型而言, 交配过的雌蜂能够取食更多的烟粉虱若虫。以B型烟粉虱为寄主时, 浅黄恩蚜小蜂雌蜂卵-黑蛹(7.2±0.1 d)、黑蛹-羽化(5.2±0.1 d)的发育时间与以Q型烟粉虱若虫为寄主时的相应发育时间(7.3±0.1 d, 5.6±0.1 d)间无显著性差异。以B型烟粉虱为寄主时寄生蜂的羽化率(73.55%±1.42%)与以Q型烟粉虱为寄主时的羽化率(68.42%±13.01%)间差异不显著。这些结果表明, 虽然浅黄恩蚜小蜂发育时间、 羽化率在烟粉虱2种生物型间无显著差异, 但该小蜂倾向于B型烟粉虱若虫作为寄主, 而且, 以B型烟粉虱若虫为寄主时, 小蜂的产卵量和寄生若虫数量均增加。但田间浅黄恩蚜小蜂的存在是否有助于Q型烟粉虱成为B型和Q型混合种群的优势种群, 还需进一步研究。  相似文献

Performance of nymphs and adults of the southern green stink bug,Nezara viridula (L.) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) feeding on immature fruits of radish,Raphanus raphanistrum L. (Brassicaceae) was poor compared with feeding on immature soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merrill] pods, but a change from radish to soybean from nymph to adult alleviated some of the detrimental effects of this food on adult performance. Over 50% of nymphs died on radish, while only 15% died on soybean. To complete nymph development (stadia 2 through 5), male and female nymphs required 9.5 and 13.3 days longer on radish compared to soybean. Fresh body weight of 1-d-old adult females and males was ≅65% greater for those reared as nymphs on soybean than on radish, with females being significantly heavier than males on both foods. Survivorship and longevity of females, however, was greater for those fed on radish as nymphs and as adults, as compared to those that fed on soybean or radish followed by soybean. Males lived longer when fed exclusively on soybean. In general, reproductive performance and percentage gain in adult body weight was greatest for insects fed on soybean only, and were better for those whose food was switched from nymph to adult, as compared to those insects fed on radish solely.  相似文献

In several animal species, including birds, individuals are known to produce low-frequency vocalizations during aggressive interactions with conspecifics. In this study, I investigated territorial interactions between male Eurasian Scops Owls Otus scops that occupied territories in a densely packed area. The single-note hoot of the Scops Owl is generally thought to be highly repeatable; however, extensive recording of male–male interactions identified previously unrecognized variation in the structure of hoots. Male Scops Owls gave hoots at a frequency lower than usual when engaging in short-distance contests with neighbouring males. Within-subject analysis revealed that the caller’s average hoot frequency was positively correlated with the distance from its rival. During contests, males gradually reduced their hoot frequency as they approached one another, perhaps reflecting changes in the degree of escalation. Furthermore, there is evidence that male Scops Owls have voluntary control of their hoot frequency also on a very short time scale. Males gave deeper hoots immediately after the rival initiated countersinging, and returned to their usual frequency range at the end of the interaction. This study confirms in part the findings of other authors’ experimental work, where male owls adjusted their vocal frequency when challenged by an opponent. However, that study suggested that vocal frequency would encode information about the caller’s bodyweight. In contrast, the results of the present study cannot exclude the hypothesis that the hoot of the Scops Owl is a variable, conventional signal that reflects the willingness to escalate the conflict. The reliability of the signal could be maintained by the risk of retaliation by the opponent, usually located a few metres from the caller.  相似文献

In the far-western United States, the bacteria that cause Lyme disease (Borrelia burgdorferi, Bb) and human granulocytic anaplasmosis (Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Ap) are transmitted by the western black-legged tick (Ixodes pacificus). In a dense woodland, human behaviors involving contact with wood were recently found to pose greater risk for encountering I. pacificus nymphs than behaviors entailing exclusive exposure to leaf litter. A four-year follow-up study was undertaken in the same woodland and, as a comparison area in one year only, in a nearby woodland-grass habitat to explore the biotic and abiotic factors that might elevate human exposure to host-seeking nymphs. Nymphs were active in the dense woodland throughout the daytime, but no consistent pattern of activity was observed with respect to time of day, temperature, or relative humidity. Significantly more nymphs were collected from the southern aspects of dense-woodland trunks than from other aspects, and more nymphs quested at a height of < or = 1 m vs 1-2 m aboveground. The prevalence of bacterial infection in ticks from the dense woodland was highly variable among years, with maxima of 22.6% and 42.9% for Bb, and 15.6% and 1.8% for Ap, in nymphs from logs and trunks, respectively. The mean densities of nymphs, and of Bb- or Ap-infected nymphs, were typically higher on logs and trunks than in adjoining leaf litter or grass in both habitats. The acarologic risk of encountering an infected nymph on dense-woodland logs or trunks was 2.8 to 11 times higher for Bb than for Ap in two of three years, and it was usually higher in dense woodland than in woodland-grass for both agents. Coinfections were rare (0.27%, n = 369 nymphs from both habitats). Individuals having prolonged contact with logs or trunks in spring would be well advised to employ personal protective measures to minimize exposure to I. pacificus nymphs and their attendant bacterial zoonotic agents.  相似文献
