Synopsis Migration of smolts in the River Piddle, Dorset, was studied over three years in relation to factors that could influence downstream movement. The river originates mostly from groundwater springs, resulting in stable flows and low turbidity except in very rainy weither. Fish were intercepted at the tidal limit in a fixed trap-net, and measurements of water temperature, discharge, turbidity, barometric pressure, rainfall and solar radiation taken nearby. Slightly increased turbidity and discharge following heavy rain initiated major movements during two nights of the total of 55 days studied. At other times large-scale movements rock place during sunny warm afternoons. Both solar radiation and water temperature were correlated with intensity and timing of movement. The pattern of migration is different from that reported on other rivers, reflecting the relatively stable flow regime of the chalkstream.  相似文献

The survival of salmon stocked in upland trout streams in the presence of salmon parr was found to be only about half the value recorded when trout alone made up the resident stock. Changes in the trout population were also recorded following the two years of salmon stocking, and these suggested that the presence of salmon parr may also influence trout fry survival. The findings are discussed in the context of habitat competition and total stream holding capacity.  相似文献

Young fry of salmon were distinguished from those of trout using electrophoresis of whole fry extracts on cellulose acetate sheets. The separation patterns were revealed by general protein staining. Juvenile Atlantic salmon ( Salmo salar L. ) were first fed under four different static photoperiods (LD 24:0, LD 21:3, LD 18:6, LD 12:12) in two experiments. Under LD 24:0, continuous feeding or feeding 12 hours per day did not affect growth rate. In both experiments the roup on continuous light (LD 24:0) had highest growth rate. Growth was reduced on reduced dayfength. It is suggested that the difference in growth between long day (LD 21:3) and continuous light (LD 24:0) was caused by a growth inhibition during the dark period.

Jungfische des atlantischen Lachses ( Salmo ralar L. ) wurden unter vier verschiedenen Photoperioden in zwei Experimenten erstmals gefüttert (LD 24:0; LD 21:3; LD 18:6; LD 12:12). Bei kontinuierlicher Fütterung (LD 24:0) oder Fütterung über 12 Stunden pro Tag, war die Wachsturnsrate nicht beeinflußt. In beiden Exerimenten hatte die Gruppe, die unter durchgehender Beleuchtung aufgezogen wurde, die höchste Wacgstumsrate. Das Wachsturn war bei kürzerer Tageslänge reduziert. Aus den Daten wird geschlossen, daß die Differenz im Wachstum zwischen dem Langtag (LD 21:3) und der durchgehenden Beleuchtung (LD 24:0) durch eine Wachtumshemmung während der Dunkelzeit verursacht wurde.  相似文献

Phagocytosis by fish cells has mostly been studied using adherent leucocytes, excluding suspended cells such as the majority of B-cells and neutrophils, but a recent study describes professional phagocytosis of latex beads and bacteria by B-cells from rainbow trout. In the present study, phagocytosis by B-cells and neutrophils from salmon and cod was studied. Leucocytes were isolated from peripheral blood (PBL) and head kidney (HKL). By flow cytometry analyses, proportions of MAb labelled cell populations with internalized fluorescent beads, as well as the number of beads within each cell, could be determined. Phagocytic capacity and ability were demonstrated in B-cells and neutrophils from salmon and cod. In salmon, B-cells had higher phagocytic ability than neutrophils in HKL, but not in PBL. For cod the phagocytic ability of B-cells were lower than for neutrophils in both HKL and PBL, but the phagocytic capacity of cod B-cells were higher than for neutrophils in both HKL and PBL. For salmon B-cells the phagocytic capacity was lower than or similar to neutrophils in HKL and PBL. The total phagocytic ability of leucocytes was different in the species studied. The highest phagocytic ability was observed in cod, showing similar values for PBL and HKL. Salmon PBL displayed about twice the phagocytic ability of cod PBL. There seemed to be some major differences between the two fish species concerning phagocytosis. In salmon, a rather large proportion of phagocytic leucocytes were phagocytic B-cells, indicating that B-cells may have an important function in particle clearance in this species. In cod, phagocytic leucocytes in HKL and PBL were mostly neutrophils, and only a small proportion of B-cells were phagocytic, supporting the more prominent role of innate immune functions in cod neutrophils.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to determine the sperm motility parameters in wild Atlantic salmon and sea trout to define criteria important for selection of milt for controlled fertilisation. Parameters for these species were determined in the fish migrating into north‐western rivers of Poland at spawning time. Eight motility parameters percentage of motile sperm (MOT), curvilinear velocity (VCL), average path velocity (VAP), straight line velocity (VSL), linearity (LIN), straightness (STR), amplitude of lateral head displacement (ALH), beat cross frequency (BCF) and motility duration were subjected to computer‐assisted sperm analysis (CASA). Milt of most individuals studied representing both salmon and trout showed spermatozoa density of 12–22 × 109 ml?1 and a high percentage of motile sperm (>70%). In general, spermatozoa swim progressively with slightly curved trajectories (mean STR = 70%, LIN = 65%) and velocity VCL of 180 μm s?1 (salmon) and 190 μm s?1 (trout), at 10 s post‐activation. Such sperm is easily accessible in the wild populations of salmon and sea trout and is recommended for use in reproduction trials. The spermatozoa of sea trout seem to show a greater tendency to follow curvilinear trajectories than those of salmon, both in the beginning and the final phase of motion. In the first phase of motility, the values and time dependencies of the motility parameters were similar in both species. In the end phase of movement differences in LIN and BCF time dependencies were found in the samples representing the two species. In salmon the linearity and beat cross frequency remained stable in this phase, contrary to the patterns in sea trout for which LIN decreased while BCF increased in the end period of movement. The downstream migration of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salarL.) and sea trout smolt (S. trutta L.) was investigated using radio telemetry in the spring of 1999 and 2000. Forty wild sea trout smolts, 20 F1 sea trout smolts, 20 hatchery salmon smolts and 20 salmon smolts from river stockings were radio tagged and released in the Danish River Lilleaa. The downstream migration of the different groups of fish was monitored by manual tracking and by three automatic listening stations. The downstream migration of radio tagged smolts of both species occurred concurrently with their untagged counterparts. The diel migration pattern of the radio tagged smolts was predominantly nocturnal in both species. Wild sea trout smolt migrated significantly faster than both the F1 trout and the introduced salmon. There was no correlation between net ground speed, gill Na+,K+-ATPase activity or fish length in any of the different groups. The migration speed of wild sea trout smolts was positively correlated with water discharge in both years. In F1 sea trout smolts, migration speed was positively correlated with temperature in 1999. The migration speed of salmon smolts did not correlate to any of the investigated parameters.  相似文献

Starch gel electrophoretic studies of 16 enzymes encoded by 34 Loci were performed on six brown trout populations. One new polymorphism is described at the Pmi-2 locus. Breeding data were analysed for both single and joint segregation of six loci: Aat-1, Cpk-1, G3p-2, Mdh-2, Mdh-3, and Pmi-2. All the loci are shown to segregate in simple mendelian ratios and one nonrandom joint segregation was observed. The polymorphism level, heterozygosities, and genetic distances were estimated and compared with those reported in other studies on brown trout and closely related salmonid species. The polymorphism level (25%) and average heterozygosity (9%) were high. Significant genetic distances were observed, but the average degree of differentiation between populations appeared to be small (9% of the total heterozygosity).  相似文献

Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) parr were reared for 4 months on experimental diets supplemented with Cd (0.5, 5, 25, 125, or 250 mg Cd x kg(-1)) to assess the long-term energetic changes based on the digestibility and biochemical deposition of the major dietary nutrients and to evaluate a maximum tolerable dietary toxicant concentration. Growth did not differ significantly (P>0.05) from the control groups. The biochemical composition of the carcass, but not the viscera, was negatively affected by dietary Cd exposure. The significant decreases in protein, lipid, and glycogen concentrations in the carcass (P<0.05, 25 mg x kg(-1) compared to control groups) caused a reduction in calculated whole-body energy content in fish fed 125 mg x kg(-1)compared to control groups. This reduction in calculated whole-body energy content was explained by a concurrent significant disturbance to the gastrointestinal function (measured as reduced digestibility). Only at the highest dietary Cd exposure (250 mg x kg(-1)), increased metabolic costs to cope with Cd toxicity was thought to contribute significantly to the reduction in carcass energy content. The most important factor effecting calculated total energetics was nutrient digestibility. Based on the logarithmic effective median concentration for reduced calculated energy digestibility (dietary Cd concentration corresponding to 50% reduction, EC50), the maximum tolerable dietary Cd concentration is 11 mg x kg(-1) diet.  相似文献

Spontaneous and antibody-dependent haemolytic activity against sheep red blood cells (SRBC) has been studied in serum from Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L. Considerable increase in haemolytic activity was detected when SRBC were sensitized with haemolysin produced in Atlantic salmon. Haemolytic activity was sensitive both to divalent cations and to heat treatment. Significant reduction in haemolytic activity was detected after absorption with SRBC, indicating the presence of natural antibody against SRBC in Atlantic salmon serum. Persistent haemolytic activity of unsensitized SRBC in serum absorbed to remove natural antibodies was found, which suggests the activation of the alternative complement pathway, while the observed increased haemolytic activity in the presence of specific antibody against SRBC suggests activation of the classical complement pathway. Spontaneous and antibody-dependent haemolytic activity were both analysed in absorbed and non-absorbed sera in a family material of Atlantic salmon. The material consisted of 574 fish belonging to 57 fullsib groups within 20 paternal halfsib groups. Fish with signs of sexual maturity generally showed reduced haemolytic activity. Statistically significant effect of sire on the spontaneous haemolytic activity of both absorbed and nonabsorbed serum, and on antibody-dependent activity, provides evidence of significant additive genetic variation in both the alternative and the classical complement activation in Atlantic salmon. Neither on a phenotypical nor on a family basis were the two traits statistically correlated. The estimated heritabilities were 0.2–0.3 with a standard error of approximately 0.1.  相似文献

A study was conducted to compare astaxanthin binding ability of solubilized muscle proteins of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.), haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus L.) and Atlantic halibut (Hippoglossus hippoglossus L.). Muscle proteins of juvenile Atlantic salmon, haddock and halibut were solubilized by sequential extraction of muscle tissue using low ionic strength solutions. Electrophoretic protein profiles of the six solubilized fractions from these species were similar. Each solubilized fraction from the three species was examined for its relative astaxanthin binding capacity. The amount of bound astaxanthin was significantly different (P < 0.05) among the six fractions of each species. Significant differences in astaxanthin binding were only found for fractions A and E among the species. The amount of bound astaxanthin in various fractions of each species showed a good correlation (R2 = 0.80–0.92) with the ANS (8-anilino-1-naphthalenesulfonate) fluorescence intensity of those fractions. The pattern and extent of astaxanthin binding to the muscle proteins of juvenile salmon, haddock and halibut is comparable to that reported previously for adult Atlantic salmon [Saha, M.R., Ross, N.W., Gill, T.A., Olsen, R.E., Lall, S.P., 2005. Development of a method to assess binding of astaxanthin to Atlantic salmon S. salar L. muscle proteins. Aquacult. Res. 36, 336–343.]. These combined observations suggest that the carotenoid binding capacity of the muscle proteins of salmon is not the limiting factor in the deposition of carotenoid in their flesh.  相似文献

The effect of 9 min of net confinement on two marine teleost species, the flounder and the Atlantic salmon, was investigated in order to gauge how different species respond to the same stress stimulus. Net confinement in both species induced significant elevations in plasma cortisol, glucose, lactate, osmolality, and monovalent ion levels; the responses to net confinement in salmon were generally of a greater magnitude. In both species, handling induced significant alterations in PFFA levels though there were marked species differences in the qualitative and quantitative aspects of this response. Plasma protein levels were significantly elevated only in the flounders. In general, the two species responded similarly to the net confinement with differences only in the absolute levels and durations of the responses.  相似文献

The oxidation of dihydrorhodamine 123 (DHR) to the fluorescent rhodamine 123 (RHO) was detected using flow cytometry. This assay for detection of respiratory burst activity was established in peripheral blood leucocytes (PBL) and head kidney leucocytes (HKL) of Atlantic salmon and Atlantic cod. The leucocytes were stimulated by phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA). For cod cells 10 times lower concentration of PMA had to be used compared to salmon cells, as higher concentrations were toxic and resulted in considerable cell death. The cells found to be RHO-positive were monocytes/macrophages and neutrophils based on the scatter dot plots, but for salmon also some small cells were found to have high fluorescence intensity both in the flow cytometry analyses and by fluorescence microscopy of cytospin preparations. The nature of these cells is not known. For cod leucocytes, such cells were not obvious. The instrument settings are a bit more demanding for cod, as cod cells die more easily compared to salmon cells. In both assays the limit between negative and positive cells has to be carefully considered. The presented flow cytometry protocols for measurements of respiratory burst in salmon and cod leucocytes can be applied in various studies where respiratory burst functions are involved, such as to verify if it is activated or suppressed in connection with infections and immunostimulation.  相似文献

Energetic expenditure during spawning of male and female 1 -sea-winter Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., was measured. Before spawning, the somatic energy content per unit weight did not differ between the sexes. The testes content offat was 0.24, of carbohydrate 8.89, of water 1.21 and of ash 1.61 times as high as that of the ovaries. Just prior to spawning, mean gonadosomatic index (GSI; wet weight, %) in males was 4.36 and in females 20.26, and expressed as energy ratios (kJ, %) 4.47 and 27.75, respectively. During spawning the energy loss of male soma was higher (35.57%) than that of females (25.00%). This was a result of higher loss of fat in males than in females. Total energy cost of spawning in males and females was on average 51.8 and 51.4%, respectively.  相似文献

Glycine betaine has been suggested to improve the maintenance of ionic and osmotic homeostasis during seawater adaptation in teleost fish. Arsenobetaine may also behave as an osmolyte, due to its structural similarity to glycine betaine. The influence of seawater adaptation on intestinal uptake and muscle accumulation of arsenobetaine in the teleost Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) was investigated. Atlantic salmon (freshwater and seawater adapted) were given a single oral dose of arsenobetaine, which was absorbed over the intestine within 6 h after exposure. Seawater adapted Atlantic salmon had significantly higher levels of accumulated arsenobetaine in blood compared to the freshwater adapted salmon. However, seawater adaptation had no effect on the levels of accumulated arsenobetaine in muscle tissue. Similar retention of the administered dose was found in muscle tissue in both freshwater and seawater adapted salmon, with 49+/-6% and 50+/-10% retention after 144 h, respectively. Results indicate that muscle retention was not influenced by salinity in seawater adapting teleosts.  相似文献

A total of 4450 tagged two and three years old salmon smolt were released into the River Drawa. Tagged salmon was caught mainly in central Baltic. Downstream migrating smolt were caught in lower Oder River till mid-May, and in the Szczecin Firth till the first decade of June. After reaching the sea, the tagged salmon migrated northeastward. They remained most of all in the central Baltic and were mainly caught near Gotland. In autumn of the third year after the release salmon were present on the spawning grounds. The fish attained an average of 58.2 cm and 1892g after the first year of sea life, 78.0 cm and 5329g after the second year, and 98.5cm and 9100g after the third year. Most of the tagged Drawa salmon were caught by Danish (44.7%) and Swedish (25.9%) fishermen.  相似文献

Initial feeding of brown trout was investigated under laboratory conditions. Fifty per cent feeding occurred when yolk constituted approximately 31% of total alevin dry weight, and feeding rate was positively correlated to developmental stage. In this paper we describe, for the first time, the effects of freshwater pearl mussel (Margaritifera margaritifera L.) encystment on the drift-feeding behavior of juvenile brown trout (Salmo trutta L.). Because both mussel and salmonid populations are often threatened, this study not only adds knowledge to the understanding of host-parasite systems, but it is also of conservation value. Individual trout, mussel-encysted (25.1?±?5.7 larvae?·?g?1 body weight, n?=?5) or non-encysted (n?=?5), were fed with chironomid larvae in a flow-through stream aquarium. Feeding trials were filmed and analyzed by counting the numbers of chironomid larvae each individual ate, and by estimating the prey-capture distance. Non-encysted trout had a significantly higher drift-foraging rate than did encysted trout, and they captured significantly more prey further away from their focal point. The reduced foraging success of encysted trout was mainly due to their failure to catch prey relatively further from their focal point. This suggests that reduced foraging success of encysted trout may be due to poorer energetic status, but the physical effects of mussel larvae on prey handling time cannot be ruled out. Encysted trout caught approximately 20 % fewer prey, which would result in a reduction in growth potential during the period of mussel encystment. Reduced energetic status might also result in reduced competitive ability or in increased exposure to predation risk.  相似文献

Apparent astaxanthin (3,3'-dihydroxy-beta,beta-carotene-4,4'-dione) digestibility coefficients (ADC) and carotenoid compositions of the muscle, liver, whole kidney and plasma were compared in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and Atlantic halibut (Hippoglossus hippoglossus) fed a diet supplemented with 66 mg astaxanthin kg(-1) dry matter for 112 days. The astaxanthin source consisted of 75% all-E-, 3% 9Z- and 22% 13Z-astaxanthin, of (3R,3'R)-, (3R,3'S; meso)-, and (3S,3'S)-astaxanthin in a 1:2:1 ratio. The ADC of astaxanthin was significantly higher in Atlantic halibut than in Atlantic salmon after 56 and 112 days of feeding (P < 0.05). The ADC of all-E-astaxanthin was significantly higher than ADC of 9Z-astaxanthin (P < 0.05). Considerably more carotenoids were present in all plasma and tissue samples of salmon than in halibut. Retention of astaxanthin in salmon muscle was 3.9% in salmon and 0 in halibut. All-E-astaxanthin accumulated selectively in the muscle of salmon, and in plasma of salmon and halibut compared with diet. 13Z-astaxanthin accumulated selectively in liver and whole kidney of salmon and halibut, when compared with plasma. A reductive pathway for astaxanthin metabolism in halibut similar to that of salmon was shown by the presence of 3',4'-cis and trans glycolic isomers of idoxanthin (3,3',4'-trihydroxy-beta,beta-carotene-4'-one) in plasma, liver and whole kidney. In conclusion, the higher ADC of astaxanthin in halibut than Atlantic salmon may be explained by lower feed intake in halibut, and the lower retention of astaxanthin by a higher capacity to transform astaxanthin metabolically.  相似文献
