Dietary boron intakes of selected populations in the United States   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Knowledge of daily boron (B) intakes will assist researchers in establishing B requirements and elucidating the metabolic role of B in humans. B concentrations in commonly consumed foods were utilized to approximate the B intake of selected US populations. Triplicate food samples were digested at low temperatures with 16M HNO3 and 30% H2O2, and analyzed by inductively coupled plasma spectroscopy (ICP). Milk and dairy products, juices, and beverages were the largest contributors to dietary B. Total B content of average daily diets ranged from 548 μg for toddlers (2 yr old) to 883 μg for mature males (60–65 yr old), excluding tap water contributions. Toddlers consumed 3.7 times more B than mature males when adjusted for body weight (body wt) and consumed the diet with the highest boron density (1.8 μg/kJ or 0.43 μg/kcal). Adolescent females consumed a diet with the lowest B density (1.12 μg/kJ or 0.26 μg/kcal). Food B concentrations applied to diet records (1020 μg/d) and ICP analysis of the corresponding food composites (1170 μg/d) were comparable (p < 0.05). Current estimations of B in US diets are consistent with reports in the literature stating that normal adult daily B intakes are approx 1 mg. doi: 10.1111/j.1741‐2358.2012.00654.x Relationships between higher‐level functional capacity and dental health behaviors in community‐dwelling older adults Objective: The aim of the present study was to elucidate relationships between higher‐level functional capacity and dental health behaviours in community‐dwelling older adults. Background: In ageing society, it is necessary to promote oral health in the elderly, because good oral health is a significant contributing factor to good general health. Higher‐level functional capacity has been considered a crucial factor for successful independent living in the elderly. We hypothesised that functional capacity is a significant indicator of dental health behaviours. Methods: Three hundred and thirty‐eight adults aged 65 years or older were enrolled in this study. Higher‐level functional capacity was evaluated using the Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Gerontology Index of Competence (TMIG‐index). Univariate and multivariate models were constructed with dental health behaviours, such as regular visits to a dentist, brushing frequency and use of extra cleaning devices, as the dependent variable, and the total TMIG‐index score and its subcategory scores as the principal independent variable. Results: Univariate logistic regression analysis demonstrated a significant correlation between low TMIG‐index and ‘intellectual activity’ subcategory scores to lack of regular visits to a dentist and not using extra cleaning devices. Using a multivariate model, significant relationships remained after adjusting for a number of variables including demographics, medical status, lifestyle and number of remaining teeth. Conclusion: Intellectual activity of higher‐level functional capacity may be an accurate indicator of dental health behaviours in community‐dwelling older adults. Intellectual activity should be taken into consideration to effectively promote oral health behaviours and oral hygiene in elderly persons living independently.  相似文献

Number of teeth and selected cardiovascular risk factors among elderly people Objective: To produce evidence on an association between the number of teeth and selected cardiovascular risk factors among an elderly population. Materials and methods: The study population comprised of 523 community‐living elderly people who participated in the population‐based Kuopio 75+ study. The data for each subject were collected using a structured clinical health examination, an interview and laboratory tests. Linear regression models were used to estimate adjusted mean values and confidence limits. Results: Edentulous persons and persons with a small number of teeth had lower serum HDL cholesterol and higher triglyceride, leucocyte and blood glucose levels and a higher body mass index (BMI) compared with subjects to a large number of teeth. Conclusion: The study showed that, in the Finnish home‐dwelling population aged 75 years or older, those with a large number of teeth were less likely to have cardiovascular risk factors such as a low serum HDL cholesterol level, a high triglyceride level and a high BMI than did subjects with a small number of teeth or who were edentulous.  相似文献

The failure of researchers to consider the temporal dimensions of the stress process may be at least partially responsible for the disappointing empirical findings from research on stress and health. We argue that careful consideration must be given to the time lag between the occurrence of a stressor and initial symptom development, as well as the length of time that is required for symptoms to abate. Using a synthetic cohort design, we examine the length of time needed for symptoms to dissipate following a natural disaster (Hurricane Alicia). Findings from a random community survey of older adults suggest that the major effects of the storm diminish in about 16 months. Significant gender differences were found in this adjustment process. The implications of these findings for stress research are discussed.  相似文献

All-cause and cause-specific mortality among white U.S. men and women are analyzed using the NHANES I data (1971-1975) and epidemiologic follow-up to 1992, to examine the effect of physical stature on mortality, controlling for other confounding variables within a discrete-time framework. We find an association between mortality and both body mass index (BMI) and height, but the height effect is sensitive with respect to the age range under consideration. Although the resulting minimum-mortality BMI is higher than the widely accepted healthy range, the recent increase in weight implies that further gains in life expectancy are unlikely to derive from the anthropometry-mortality relationship.  相似文献

The interaction between the two main competing geometric determinants of teeth (the geometry of function and the geometry of occlusion) were investigated through the construction of three-dimensional spatial models of several mammalian tooth forms (carnassial, insectivore premolar, zalambdodont, dilambdodont, and tribosphenic). These models aim to emulate the shape and function of mammalian teeth. The geometric principles of occlusion relating to single- and double-crested teeth are reviewed. Function was considered using engineering principles that relate tooth shape to function. Substantial similarity between the models and mammalian teeth were achieved. Differences between the two indicate the influence of tooth strength, geometric relations between upper and lower teeth (including the presence of the protocone), and wear on tooth morphology. The concept of "autocclusion" is expanded to include any morphological features that ensure proper alignment of cusps on the same tooth and other teeth in the tooth row. It is concluded that the tooth forms examined are auto-aligning, and do not require additional morphological guides for correct alignment. The model of therian molars constructed by Crompton and Sita-Lumsden ([1970] Nature 227:197-199) is reconstructed in 3D space to show that their hypothesis of crest geometry is erroneous, and that their model is a special case of a more general class of models.  相似文献

Mesiodistal and buccolingual crown dimensions of the right deciduous teeth of 133 white children were analyzed for information on sexual dimorphism and sex discrimination using discriminant analysis. Even though consistent differences were found for only 15 out of 20 paired measurements, five of them significant at p = 0.05 or better, discriminant analysis showed the possibility of correctly sexing up to 75% of the juvenile sample, using a maximum of seven deciduous teeth.  相似文献

The present nutrient status of 43 rivers entering Scottish estuaries and firths is reviewed using monitoring data for nitrogen concentrations from the river purification authorities and other sources. Nitrogen concentrations range from very low, with no evidence of elevated levels, to a small number of sites which are highly nitrogen-enriched. Only one estuary site, the Ythan in North-east Scotland, has been proposed as a Nitrate Vulnerable Zone, where a number of chemical and ecological criteria outlined in the EC Nitrate Directive have been met, with potential serious consequences for the natural heritage interests of the estuary. Evidence of nitrogen enrichment in the waters of other Scottish estuaries is discussed in relation to the nitrogen levels in the Ythan Estuary. In addition, the results of ecological studies are discussed for two sites of international importance for waders and waterfowl, viz. Montrose Basin and the Eden Estuary, where there is evidence that changes may be occurring in the intertidal ecology of these estuaries as a result of nutrient enrichment. Requirements for future monitoring and research on nutrient enrichment in the Ythan and other estuaries are discussed. A general approach to nitrogen reductions in the Ythan catchment is presented, in addition to alternative options which might have additional benefits for natural heritage interests.  相似文献

Objectives: The objective of this study was to assess whether elderly people with 20 or more natural teeth were more likely to live longer than a cohort with less than 20 teeth. Materials and methods: Groups of elderly people over 80 years of age (24 males and 35 females) with 20 or more teeth (≥20 group) were compared with elderly people (24 males and 35 females) with less than 20 teeth (<20 group). Follow‐up studies were conducted at regular intervals for 10 years from July 1992 to July 2002. The cumulative survival rate of the ≥20 group (average ± SE tooth number of teeth – males, 23.9 ± 0.6; females, 23.8 ± 0.4) was compared with the <20 group (average number of teeth – males, 3.8 ± 1.1; females, 2.6 ± 0.8). The multivariate Cox proportional hazard models with the number of teeth in a group (≥20 group or <20 group). Smoking status and alcohol intake as covariates were used to adjust the cumulative survival rate. Results: The male participants in the ≥20 group had a significantly higher cumulative survival rates (p < 0.05) than the <20 group at 18 and 21 months from baseline. There were no significant differences in survival rates between the female groups. Adjusted cumulative survival rate was significantly different at 72, 75 and 78 months between the ≥20 group and <20 group for males but not for females. Conclusion: Having 20 or more natural teeth was associated with increased survival rate in elderly males, but not among the elderly females.  相似文献

Aim: To describe oral self‐care practices and the use of dental services among dentate elderly patients attending public dental service in Kédainiai, Lithuania, and relate these parameters to the number of remaining teeth. Design: Cross‐sectional questionnaire study. Setting: Two public dental offices in Kédainiai, Lithuania. Participants: Dentate patients aged 60+. Methods: A self‐administered questionnaire covering oral hygiene practices, use of sugar, utilisation of dental services, and number of teeth. Age, gender, and education served as background factors. Results: In all, 174 dentate elderly people responded, their mean age being 69.2 years (CI 95% 68.2–70.2) and mean number of teeth reported 16.2 (CI 95% 15.4–17.1). Of these respondents, 30% reported that they brushed their teeth twice daily and 57% that they always used fluoridated tooth paste. Having 21+ teeth was strongly associated (p < 0.001) with these habits, with brushing in the evening, and with enrolment in higher education, but not with gender. After controlling for various self‐care and background factors, frequent tooth brushing remained as the only significant factor in the logistic regression model (OR 2.0, CI 95% 1.2–3.3, p = 0.01) to explain subjects’ retention of 21+ teeth. Conclusions: Elderly Lithuanians’ oral self‐care is far from meeting recommendations. To preserve their natural teeth, dentate elderly people should improve their oral self‐care practices, in particular as regards tooth brushing. To reach that goal, all efforts by the community and dental profession are welcomed.  相似文献

Objectives: To evaluate the typical appearance of natural anterior teeth in young and elderly people and to develop guidelines for the natural appearance of dentures. Design: Clinical examination and photography. Inclusion criteria were a dental state with natural anterior teeth and no more than two crowns. Subjects: A study group (SG) consisting of 64 patients ranging in age from 60 to 86 years (67.3 ± 5.8) and a control group (CG) composed of 64 dental students aged 21–33 years (25.8 ± 2.4). Setting: Dental schools of the Johannes‐Gutenberg‐University Mainz and the University of Leipzig. Results: Most participants were content with the appearance of their own natural teeth. With relaxed lips a mean of 1.5 (±0.19) mm of upper incisors and 1.6 (±0.19) mm of lower incisors were visible in the SG compared with 2.5 (±0.16) and 0.4 (±0.07) mm in the CG, respectively. The subjects in the SG showed a greater diversity in position of teeth in the anterior arch and this was more often with incisors than with canines. Features such as stains, cracks and defects were much more noticeable in the SG. An inter‐dental ‘black triangle’ seemed to be a typical feature of an aged dental appearance. Conclusion: The majority of people older than 60 years who still have their own natural anterior teeth would not wish for a change in appearance if they needed a prosthodontic reconstruction. Thus techniques for customisation should be promoted to obtain a natural appearance in dentures.  相似文献

Mesiodistal and buccolingual crown diameters were measured from dental casts representing the deciduous dentitions of 197 Aboriginal children from the Northern Territory of Australia. Double determination analysis indicated that the semi-automatic recording procedure used was reliable leading to observer errors of no practical significance. Tooth-size was greater in the male subjects but the sexual dimorphism was less marked than in the permanent teeth of the same subjects. The mandibular teeth were more uniform than maxillary with respect to buccolingual size relative to mesiodistal. Extremes of general tooth-size were more marked in the deciduous dentition than in the permanent as a consequence of the relatively large deciduous second molar which in Aboriginals approximates in size the permanent first molar of many other ethnic groups.  相似文献

Objective: Although obesity is increasing in older U.S. adults, treatment is controversial in this age group. We sought to examine evidence concerning obesity's health‐related risks, diagnostic methods, and treatment outcomes in older individuals. Research Methods and Procedures: We searched MEDLINE and Cochrane Library databases, consulted with experts, and examined bibliographies for English language studies discussing obesity in older adults (mean age ≥ 60), published between January 1980 and November 2005. Inclusion criteria were met by 32 longitudinal analyses, seven diagnostic studies, and 17 randomized controlled trial articles. At least two authors independently reviewed and abstracted study design, population, results, and quality information. Results: Correlations between body fat and three anthropometric measures (BMI, waist circumference, waist‐to‐hip ratio) decrease with age but remain clinically significant. Obesity contributes to risk for several cardiovascular endpoints, some cancers, and impaired mobility but protects against hip fracture. The association between obesity and mortality declines as age increases. Intensive counseling strategies incorporating behavioral, dietary, and exercise components promote a weight loss of 3 to 4 kg over 1 to 3.3 years. The loss is linked with improved glucose tolerance, improved physical functioning, reduced incidence of diabetes and a combined hypertension and cardiovascular endpoint, and reduced bone density. Discussion: In older adults, obesity can be diagnosed with standard clinical measures. Intensive counseling can promote modest sustained weight loss, but data are insufficient to evaluate surgical or pharmacological options. Obesity treatment is most likely to benefit individuals with high cardiovascular risk. Limited data suggest possible functional improvement. Treatment should incorporate measures to avoid bone loss.  相似文献
