The efficacy of fractionated salmon pituitary gonadotropin as a spawning agent in Mugil cephalus L. was tested. Natural spawning was induced in all females with a total dose of 11.9–20.9 μg/g body wt. Spawning dose varied inversely with initial mean egg diameters of recipient females. A 'critical' mean egg diameter of 650–700 μ was observed to precede the hormone dose that induced spawning. A 'priming' effect was observed following the initial injection and is discussed. The 'latency period' was determined to be 10–15 h; fecundity was estimated at 648 eggs/g body wt. Courtship, spawning and fertilization occurred naturally with uninjected males.  相似文献

The chemical composition of tank and pond reared and wild young grey mullet, Mugil cephalus L., ranging in length from 15 to 75 mm was studied. Tank reared mullet had a higher percentage of protein, carbohydrate, total lipid and a lower moisture content than wild fish. These differences are attributed to the artificial diet, available in excess, as well as the relatively inactive life in the confined spaces of the rearing tanks. M. cephalus in general has a high percentage of total lipid and therefore, can be classified as a 'fatty' fish. The highest level of protein in tank reared fish was found in those kept at a salinity of 20‰. Fish reared on an excess diet in fresh water tended to show a close similarity to wild fish in trends of change of chemical constituents with growth.  相似文献

用组织学、免疫组织化学和电镜技术对鲻鱼甲状腺的分布与形态结构进行研究。结果表明,鲻鱼甲状腺滤泡分散地分布在第1对至第3对鲻弓的入鳃动脉之间;构成同一滤泡的单层上皮细胞呈扁平形和立方形两种形态,反映出同一滤泡中上皮细胞生理活动的不同步,且发现不同发育时期的鲻鱼这两种形态细胞的比例有显著差异。用特异性甲状腺球蛋白(TG)抗体对甲状腺滤泡的免疫染色反应显示,阳性物质分布在滤泡上皮细胞的脑膜及围绕滤泡腔的周边与中央胶质,幼年与成年鲻鱼甲状腺滤泡的免疫阳性反应部位有所不同。两种不同活动状态的细胞,扁平形细胞和立方形细胞,在核与胞质的超微结构上有显著不同。扁平形细胞的核为扁平形或椭圆形,核内常染色质十分丰富,核膜光滑,核周腔和核孔没有扩张,胞质中各种细胞器发育较差;立方形细胞的核膜高度凹陷,将核分为2叶至3叶,核周腔和核孔扩张,胞质中各种细胞器发育良好,出现长棒形和哑铃形线粒体,且数量明显多于扁平形细胞,多层粗面内质网呈板层状排列,还有发育好的高尔基复合体。另外,我们还观察到一种介于扁平形细胞和立方形细胞之间的中间型细胞,其胞质和核的发育明显好于扁平形细胞,但比立方形细胞差。上述结果可为了解鲻鱼甲状腺滤泡细胞分泌活动的机制提供基础资料[动物学报49(2):230—237,2003]。  相似文献

Five kinds of artificial sea water with similar salinity, pH and osmolarity were prepared with different concentrations of calcium and magnesium ions. They were complete sea water, calcium-free sea water, half calcium-free sea water, magnesium-free sea water and half magnesium-free sea water. The fertilized eggs from induced spawnings of grey mullet Mugil cephalus , were transferred to these sea waters at two development stages, i.e. before the formation of 2-blastomere stage and at the gastrula stage. Survivals of fertilized egg in different sea waters were checked after several hours incubation, the percentage survival was used as an index of the importance of calcium and magnesium to the embryonic development. The results showed that calcium is indispensable to the embryonic development of mullet egg. Magnesium, however, is not the necessary element in the incubation medium.  相似文献

Grey mullet, Mugil cephalus , collected from ponds were induced to spawn with carp pituitary homogenate and human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) at 30%o salinity and 26° C. The spontaneously spawned and fertilized eggs were transferred to sea water of different salinities in the range of 5–70%o, either at the 2-blastomere or the gastrula stage. Those eggs transferred at the gastrula stage were more tolerant to the salinity change than were those transferred at the 2-blastomere stage. The eggs did develop to the embryonic stage within the salinity range from 5 to 60%o. Hatching occurred in all salinities between 10 and 55%o. However, no larvae survived at 10 or at 55%o. The optimal salinity range for eggs incubating at 22.0–25.5° C was from 30 to 40%o salinity, with the peak at 35%o.  相似文献

The effects of mammalian gonadotropins, methyltestosterone and partially purified salmon gonadotropin on spermiation and oocyte maturation were studied in adult grey mullet. Methyltestosterone was a potent spermiating agent in both prespawning and spawning trials. The most effective dose was 5 mg/100 g body weight. Human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) was moderately effective at a dose rate of 20 IU/100 g body weight. Both hormones blocked resorption of milt in captive animals. The HCG, FSH/LH combination, Synahorin+mullet pituitary homogenate, and partially purified salmon gonadotropin were equally effective, at the doses used, in inducing oocyte maturation and preventing onset of atrophy before completion of vitellogenesis. Atrophy occurred in all experimental fish at mean oocyte diameter of 750 μ. The significance of this finding is discussed. (Oceanic Institute Contribution No. 98).  相似文献

Ontogenesis of osmotic regulation in the striped mullet, Mugil cephalus L.   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The osmoregulatory capabilities of juvenile striped mullet, Mugil cephalus L ., of three size-groups (20–29, 30–39 and 40–9 mm s.l.) were compared in a series of six salinities ranging from fresh water to full sea water. The two smaller size-groups were able to tolerate instantaneous transfer from the brackish water in which captured, to all salinities but fresh water, while the 40–69 mm group were tolerant of instantaneous transfer to all experimental salinities. At high environmental salinities, the osmotic regulatory capabilities improved with growth in size to an apparently definitive condition in fish of 40–69 mm s.l. The smallest of these individuals were estimated to be about 7.5 months old. The osmotic regulatory capability in waters of low salinity had reached a definitive state with the development of tolerance to such salinities. The ontogenetic pattern for Mugil cephalus is virtually identical to that of the Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar .  相似文献

Infection of striped mullet (Mugil cephalus) with Aeromonas hydrophila results in an acute septicemic disease. The disease can be experimentally induced by intramuscular injection, skin or gill scarification or by the oral route using pellets purposely seeded with bacteria. The organism was isolated from the blood 1–2 days after infection and from all organs 24 hr or longer after infection. The disease is characterized by early inflammatory and proliferative changes and later necrotic changes. Enteritis and hepatic necrosis are constant findings in aeromonad disease of M. cephalus but surface lesions are not pathognomic for these infections in mullet. Death of infected fish may be attributed to bacterial toxins which cause necrosis of parenchymal organs and soft tissue structure.  相似文献

Class 0 and class 1 striped mullet, Mugil cephalus , were collected from May 1970 to June 1971 to study development, seasonal abundance of parasite populations, and distribution of gill parasites. Crustacean parasites observed were Ergasilus lizae, E. versicolor, E.funduli, Bomolochus concinnus, Brachiella oblonga, Caligus mfimaculatus, Clavella inversa, Lernaeeni–cus longiventris, Argulus funduli and A. chesapeakensis sp.n. Cressey. Cyclipoid copepods initially infected class 0 mullet in late spring and populations were characterized by surges in intensity at 6 to 8 week intervals. Caligoid copepods initially infected class 0 mullet in late summer and fall or appeared only on class 1 mullet. Intensity remained low, but they were observed consistently. Branchiurans were rarely observed on class 0 mullet and occurred consistently at low intensity on class 1 mullet. Study of distribution of five gill parasites indicated a high degree of gill habitat subdivision, but competitive exclusion was not observed.  相似文献

Diets containing 17α-Methyl-testosterone were given to grey mullet, Mugil cephalus , during the refractory period in its reproductive cycle at the dosage of 25 mg or 12.5mgkg−1 fish. Fish in experiment I were fed the diet containing methyl-testosterone every day for 55 weeks, and fish in Experiment II were fed the same diet daily for the first 10 weeks, and three times per week for the next 42 weeks. Fish were checked for the presence of sperm weekly or bi-weekly and tested for fertility during the spawning season. Terminal gonad weights and histology were compared with control groups. This study demonstrated that male mullet will mature 3 weeks or less by oral administration of 12.5 mg methyl-testosterone kg−1 fish daily. Fish can then be maintained in mature condition by feeding them methyl-testosterone at 12.5 mg kg−1 three times per week.  相似文献

Flathead grey mullet (Mugil cephalus L.) stocked in fish ponds were long considered to feed primarily on detritus. However, recent research has found that they obtain much of their food from plankton and that they have a detrimental effect on pond zooplankton and large phytoplankton, whilst enhancing small phytoplankton. It has been suggested that flathead grey mullet may also increase the internal phosphorus loading of the ecosystem, which would also increase phytoplankton density. To test whether zooplankton removal or nutrient release from the sediment is the better explanation for phytoplankton enhancement in the presence of flathead grey mullet, the ecosystems of fish-less tanks, tanks with a 60 m mesh filter and tanks stocked at a fish density of 243 g m-3 were compared. In the presence of flathead grey mullets, cladocerans, ostracods and chironomid larvae became scarcer than in the control tanks, while there were more small phytoplankton and mud snails. The green algae Cladophora sp. did not occur at all. The presence of a mechanical filter also reduced cladoceran, ostracod and chironomid densities and increased phtyoplankton and mud snail density. However, the situation observed in filter tanks was intermediate between that observed in the fish tanks and the control tanks, due to the lower filtering efficiency of the mechanical filter. The organic matter content of the sediment decreased throughout the experiment in the control and filter tanks, but remained stable in fish tanks. Phosphorus and nitrogen concentrations were not affected by any treatment. These results showed that flathead grey mullet enhanced phytoplankton development due to the removal of large cladocerans and not as a consequence of nutrient release. Furthermore, the flathead grey mullet strongly modified the benthic community, probably due to direct predation.  相似文献

The biology of young grey mullet, Mugil cephalus L. populations of a coastal lagoon—the Negombo Lagoon on the West Coast of Sri Lanka was studied from October 1976 to March 1978. The relative abundance of fry were found to vary from month to month, with peaks occurring in December-January, May and September-October, coinciding with the end of rainy seasons. It was found that the young fry tended to migrate into the lagoon at a size of about 10–20 mm, most frequently between 15–20 mm in length, by which time they were fully scaled. The young fry after a period of growth in the shallow areas of the lagoon, when they reached a size of 30–35 mm, emigrated into the deeper waters of the lagoon. The rate of growth, as computed from length frequency distribution studies, was found to be around 0.24 mm day−1. Results of diurnal surveys showed a movement of the larger size fry into shallower waters during the hours of darkness and this movement appears to be independent of the tidal cycle. It is postulated that the cause of this migration is to escape from predators, chiefly piscine. Investigations of the meristic characters indicated that the young fry which migrated into the lagoon at different times of the year probably originated from a single spawning stock.  相似文献

Young-of-the-year (class 0) and yearling (class 1) striped mullet, Mugil cephalus , were collected from Sapelo Island, Georgia from May 1970 to June 1971 to study the development, seasonal abundance and relationship of environmental variables to parasitic populations. The number of species of parasites increased with age of the host. Initial infection appeared to be influenced by closeness of association of mullet age classes, by the period of abundance of a parasite on class I mullet and by the mobility of the infective parasitic stage. Fluctuations in intensity and prevalence of a parasite on class 0 mullet were similar to those of class I mullet after the initial infection. Ancyrocephalus vanbenedenii was first observed on class 0 mullet in March. Intensity was high on both classes in spring and on reproductively active mullet in late autumn. Prevalence on both classes was above 80% except in late summer. Polyclithrum mugilis was not observed on class 0 mullet until August even though intensity and prevalence on class I mullet was highest during early spring. Gyrodactylus mugelus did not occur on class 0 mullet but appeared on class I mullet during late summer. Microcotyle psuedomugilis was observed on class 0 mullet in early summer and Metamicrocolyla maeracantha in October. Both species occurred but at a low intensity on class I mullet.  相似文献

Larvae from artificially bred grey mullet were reared in the laboratory and survival rates of 0.2 %, 5 % and 5 % achieved in three of six trials. Food consisted of wild zooplankton and Anemia nauplii. Feeding began on the fifth day, when the yolk sac was depleted, and intensified on the ninth day. The rate of yolk absorption and feeding intensity were reflected in the growth curve. Larval survival was not affected by withholding food from the larvae till the seventh day from hatching. Two critical periods associated with high larval mortality were apparent on the 2nd–3rd and 8th–11th days after hatching. These were preceded by an increase in specific gravity of larvae followed by passive sinking to the bottom of the rearing tank. Larval length increased from 2.63 mm at hatching to 17.69 mm at the end of the 42-day larval period. The larvae survived on benthic diatoms therefter. Maximum survival rates were achieved at 22°C. The biology of grey mullet, Mugil cephalus L., adult populations in a coastal lagoon in Sri Lanka is presented. The percentage of grey mullet catches increased with increasing salinity. The larger fish were found in the deeper areas and the relationship of total length to depth was L = 8.4602e0.0058 D where L = total length and D = depth (cm). The overall female to male ratio was 0.95 : 1.0 and seasonal variation in the sex ratio is considered to be caused by the differential timing in the spawning migrations of the two sexes. Males mature at 34.0 cm and females at 31.5 cm. The main spawning season was between January and May and it is hypothesized that the breeding season is geared to utilize the favourable time period, for growth of fry, in the lagoon. Grey mullet sheds its eggs in batches. Fecundity varied from 0.45 to 4.2 million in fish ranging in length from 32 to 56 cm and in weight from 0.7 to 2.2 kg. Fecundity was significantly correlated to body length and weight and gonad weight.  相似文献

The validity of using extruded intra-ovarian oocytes for in vivo assessment of ovarian maturity in the grey mullet was established. The diameter of sampled, unfixed oocytes was used as a reference point for comparative purposes. Analysis of variations in oocyte diameters among samples removed from seven different ovarian locations indicated that mullet oocytes develop in synchrony and that in vivo samples taken from any area in the ovary would be representative of the entire ovary. Statistical analyses of oocyte diameters and diameter-frequency distributions data from duplicate in vivo samples removed from the same ovarian site in each of 17 females showed no significant differences and validated the accuracy of the method. Similar comparisons of data from in vivo and in vitro samples revealed no statistically significant differences.  相似文献

Sequential changes in water content and inorganic ion concentrations occurring in intra-ovarian oocytes of the grey mullet, Mugil cephalus L., during hormone-induced final maturation are described. Post-vitellogenic oocytes have a water content of 59.4%. During final maturation, oocyte water increases rapidly to a maximum of 84.8% at oviposition. Hydration is accompanied by a relatively small increase in dry matter due to the concurrent uptake of inorganic ions and an apparent uptake of organic matter. Net uptake of Ca2+ during hydration is negligible. Net uptake of Mg2 + and Na+ occurs in less than equimolar proportions. Net uptake of K+ and Cl? occurs in greater than equimolar proportions prior to ovulation, returning to equimolarity at oviposition. Hence, hydration results in a dilution of intracellular Ca2+, Mg2+ and Na+ to minimum concentrations at oviposition. In contrast, K+ and Cl? concentrations are slightly elevated prior to ovulation, returning to initial levels at oviposition. A 1:1 stoichiometric relationship in net uptake of K + andCl? is evident. Intracellular osmotic pressure in post-vitellogenic oocytes is 203.4 ± 18.0 mOsmolkg?1. Osmotic pressure rises to a peak of 421.3+ 17.3 mOsmol kg?1 prior to ovulation, then declines to 313.3 ± 15.0 mOsmol kg?1 at oviposition. This rise in osmotic pressure prior to ovulation cannot be accounted for solely on the basis of inorganic ion uptake and must be attributed to changes in intracellular concentrations of organic solutes as well. An apparent increase in non-ash dry matter during hydration suggests that a net uptake of organic solute is involved. A relatively small organic molecule with high osmotic activity (e.g., amino acids) is implicated.  相似文献

Elucidation of the sex‐determination mechanism in flathead grey mullet (Mugil cephalus) is required to exploit its economic potential by production of genetically determined monosex populations and application of hormonal treatment to parents rather than to the marketed progeny. Our objective was to construct a first‐generation linkage map of the M. cephalus in order to identify the sex‐determining region and sex‐determination system. Deep‐sequencing data of a single male was assembled and aligned to the genome of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). A total 245 M. cephalus microsatellite markers were designed, spanning the syntenic tilapia genome assembly at intervals of 10 Mb. In the mapping family of full‐sib progeny, 156 segregating markers were used to construct a first‐generation linkage map of 24 linkage groups (LGs), corresponding to the number of chromosomes. The linkage map spanned approximately 1200 cM with an average inter‐marker distance of 10.6 cM. Markers segregating on LG9 in two independent mapping families showed nearly complete concordance with gender (R2 = 0.95). The sex determining locus was fine mapped within an interval of 8.6 cM on LG9. The sex of offspring was determined only by the alleles transmitted from the father, thus indicating an XY sex‐determination system.  相似文献
