Feeding of age-1 brown trout Salmo trutta in a third-order river in northern Finland was usually highest in the twilight hours and lowest around midday. Diel periodicity in food intake was less distinct and rarely significant for age-0 trout. Daily rations declined seasonally, being lowest in October, and highest in June (age-1 trout) or early August (age-0 trout). Prey selection did not differ between day and night, but differences between age classes and sampling dates were distinct. Age-0 trout preferred Ephemerella nymphs in summer and Micrasema larvae later in the season. Age-1 trout fed selectively on caddis larvae on all sample dates. Aerial insects and Baetis nymphs were avoided by both age classes on most occasions. These patterns of preference are probably explained by a trend towards epibenthic feeding, which may be a predominant foraging mode in some trout populations. Nevertheless, repuscular peaks in feeding periodicity suggest that trout were able to capitalize on the increased availability of drifting prey in the twilight, especially in the early summer months. 相似文献

The feeding ecology of scarinine parrotfishes on tropical coral reefs has received considerable attention in the past few decades; nonetheless, relatively few studies have been conducted in high-latitude reefs. Among the Indo-Pacific Scarus species, Scarus ovifrons is unique, being largely restricted to the warm temperate waters of Japan. Nonetheless, there is very little information available on the feeding ecology of this species. In this study, the authors used acoustic telemetry to detect the diel vertical movement patterns of S. ovifrons, video survey to detect its feeding depths and substrata and focal follow survey and genetic analysis to identify algae composition on the feeding scars at Kashiwajima Island, southwestern Japan (32° 46′ N, 132° 38′ E). Acoustic telemetry revealed that S. ovifrons spent most of its time in shallow water (<10 m) during the day and slept in deeper water (10–15 m) at night. Video and focal follow surveys revealed that most fishes of various sizes regularly took bites on epilithic algae and detrital materials on rocky substrata at depths of <10 m, but large fishes (>40 cm total length) sometimes took bites directly on live corals (Acropora solitaryensis) at the 5 m depth zone where live tabular corals dominated the benthos. Molecular phylogenetic analyses revealed that epilithic algae collected from feeding scars were mainly composed of Rhodophyta, and coralline algae were less often targeted. Overall, this study revealed that S. ovifrons feeds mostly at depths <10 m, and the feeding algae substrata of the species are similar to those of tropical coral reef parrotfishes. 相似文献

Ten tetranucleotide, dinucleotide and compound microsatellite loci were isolated and characterized for the round goby, Neogobius melanostomus. Analysis of 64 gobies from one nonindigenous population in Lake Erie, Ontario, Canada, indicated that allele number varied from three to 12 per locus, while observed heterozygosity ranged between 0.33 and 0.86. Eight of these primers showed some amplification in other species in four genera. These newly developed microsatellite markers are a powerful tool that will provide insights into population structure and dispersal of the round goby in their novel environment. 相似文献

Summary Seasonal and diel activity patterns of mergansers, gulls, and terns along a river in northern Sweden were documented, as were those of their fish prey. The seasonal and diel activity patterns of goosandersMergus merganser and gulls (Larus canus, L. argentatus, andL. fuscus) were closely related to that of the river lampreyLampetra fluviatilis. During the peak spawning of the river lamprey, birds showed a nocturnal peak in fishing activity. During the summer solstice, birds were active for 24 h. The activity patterns of red-breasted merganserMergus serrator, ternsSterna spp., and three-spined sticklebacksGasterosteus aculeatus were also similar. Activity pattern of the prey apparently influenced breeding time, diel activity and foraging area of the twoMergus species. Social relations between gulls probably corrdinated their peak in fishing, which coincided with the time lampreys were most efficiently exploited. 相似文献

Diel abundance, migration and feeding of fish larvae (Eleotridae) in a floodplain billabong 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
P. C. Gehrke 《Journal of fish biology》1992,40(5):695-707
Eleotrid larvae (2.1–16 mm) were collected from surface waters of a billabong in south-eastern Australia. Estimates of larval density in plankton net samples at night averaged 148.3 larvae per m3 and 16.6 larvae per m3 during the day. In contrast, pump samples provided density estimates of 8.3 larvae per m3 at night and 0.9 larvae per m3 during the day. Larval densities did not differ between open water, snag (fallen tree) and Typha habitats, but Typha habitats yielded larger larvae than other habitats. 32.9% of larvae in pump samples were damaged and unmeasurable, creating a bias favouring larger larvae. The modal length of larvae in net samples at night was 5–6 mm, compared with 3–4 mm during the day, reflecting both greater net avoidance by larger larvae during the daytime and dispersal of smaller larvae from the surface at night. Dispersion patterns of larvae suggest that classes of larvae smaller than, and larger than 5.0 mm exhibit reciprocal diel vertical migration behaviour linked to ontogenetic changes in diet. Larvae less than 5 mm fed only during the day and preyed exclusively on rotifers, whereas larger larvae continued to feed at night and consumed mostly planktonic crustaceans. 相似文献

Taste preferences in fishes are known mainly for carnivorous species, whereas herbivorous consumers were rarely used in such studies. The main goal of the present study was to evaluate the taste preferences in the herbivorous African cichlid fish, Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus. In laboratory settings, the palatability of widely used taste substances (four taste substances that are considered to be sweet, sour, bitter and salty for humans – sucrose, citric acid, calcium chloride and sodium chloride; 21 free L -amino acids; 12 sugars and artificial sweetener Na-saccharin; 0.1–0.0001 M) was evaluated. In each trial, a standard agar pellet flavoured with a substance was offered for fish individually. The consumption of pellet, the number of grasps and the retention time before the pellet was finally ingested or rejected were registered. Overall, 21 of 38 substances were palatable, whereas other substances did not shift consumption of pellets in relation to blank pellets. Pellets containing citric acid, L -cysteine, L -norvaline, L -isoleucine, L -valine, Na-saccharin and D -sorbitol were consumed in >85% of trials. Taste attractiveness of amino acids was highly species-specific and was not associated with the trophic category of the 19 species compared. Moreover, it did not correlate with dietary quantitative requirements of Nile tilapia (rs = 0.27; P > 0.05). Palatability of sugars for O. niloticus and their sweetness for humans did not correlate as well (rs = 0.21; P > 0.05); nonetheless, Na-saccharin has the most attractive taste for both O. niloticus and humans. The most palatable amino acids lost their effect if the concentration was lowered to 0.01 M for L -cysteine and 0.001 M for L -norvaline (lower than 242.3 μg and 23.4 μg per a pellet, respectively). Single pellet grasp was characteristic of O. niloticus feeding behaviour (>95% of trials), and this pattern may be related to the social lifestyle of this species. Fish spent 4–8 s on average for orosensory evaluation of pellet edibility. The retention time correlated with the palatability of substances and was significantly longer in trials that ended up with pellet swallowing. It is suggested that prolonged orosensory evaluation of food before swallowing provides a reliable and accurate sensory evaluation, which, in turn, can reduce the probability that inadequate food will be consumed. 相似文献

Fishes were collected over 7 months (February to June and November to December 1999) from seven sandbanks located on the main channel of the Cinaruco River, Venezuela. Significant shifts in assemblage structure and species richness were documented between diurnal and nocturnal samples. Seine samples standardized for effort yielded 41 604 individual fishes representing seven orders, 25 families, 80 genera and 134 species. Nocturnal samples yielded 68% of the total individuals, and 54% of species were collected exclusively at night. Nocturnal samples were significantly more species rich than their paired diurnal samples, even after rarefaction. Correspondence analysis revealed consistent differences in assemblage structure between diurnal and nocturnal samples probably due to species-specific habitat use and activity patterns. In spite of the magnitude of seasonal variation in hydrology and habitat availability in the Cinaruco River, species richness and abundance on sandbanks varied relatively little. The study of biological diversity and understanding of patterns of habitat use in a neotropical river were enhanced by nocturnal sampling. 相似文献

Ancient divisions, recent expansions: phylogeography and population genetics of the round goby Apollonia melanostoma 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
During the past two decades, the round goby Apollonia melanostoma (= Neogobius melanostomus ) has expanded its range via shipping transport and canals, extending north and west from the Ponto-Caspian region of Eurasia and to the North American Great Lakes. Exotic populations of the round goby have been very successful in the Baltic Sea and the Great Lakes regions, exerting significant ecological changes. Our study evaluates the population genetic and biogeographical structure of the round goby across its native and nonindigenous ranges, in light of geological history and its expansion pathways. We analyzed seven new nuclear microsatellite loci and mitochondrial DNA cytochrome b gene sequences from 432 individuals in 22 locations. Population structure was tested using F ST -analogs, phylogenetic trees, clustering diagrams, Bayesian assignment tests and nested clade analyses. Results show that native populations in the Black vs. the Caspian Sea basins diverge by 1.4% and c. 350 000 years, corresponding to closure of their prior connections and supporting the taxonomic separation of the Black Sea A. m. melanostoma from the Caspian Sea A. m. affinis . Their within-basin populations diverge by ~0.4% and 100 000 years. Nonindigenous populations in the Baltic Sea and Danube and Dnieper Rivers trace to separate northern Black Sea origins, whereas the upper Volga River system houses mixed populations of A. m. melanostoma and A. m. affinis . Native populations average twice the genetic diversity of most exotic sites; however, sites in the Volga River system have high diversity due to mixing of the two taxa. Our results highlight how vicariance and anthropogenic disturbances have shaped a rapidly expanding species' genetic heritage. 相似文献

The interplay of abiotic factors and competition has a long history in ecology, although there are very few studies on the
interaction of salinity and competition in fish. Mosquitofish (Gambusia holbrooki) are among the most invasive fish worldwide, with well documented ecological impacts on several taxa such as amphibians and
small native fish. It has been previously hypothesized, based on field observations, that salinity limits the invasive success
of mosquitofish and provides a competitive refuge for Mediterranean cyprinodonts. We experimentally tested this hypothesis
by examining the agonistic behaviour and food competition between mosquitofish and an endangered native cyprinodont (Aphanius fasciatus) at three salinities (0, 15, 25‰). Intraspecific aggressive behaviour for both species was not significantly affected by
salinity. As salinity increased, mosquitofish decreased their aggressive behaviour towards cyprinodonts and captured less
prey. In contrast, the cyprinodonts did not change their behaviour with different salinity treatments, with the possible exception
of increased defensive acts in higher salinities, but captured more prey with increasing salinity because of the reduced efficiency
of mosquitofish. Our study confirms previous field observations that salinity limits the invasive success of mosquitofish
and provides one of the few experimental demonstrations that it may mediate behavioural and competitive interactions between
fish species. Condition-specific competition of mosquitofish might be expected with other species and ecosystems worldwide
and illustrates the importance of integrating biotic and abiotic factors in the study of interspecific interactions. 相似文献

ABSTRACT. Daily cyclic activities in various behaviours were similar in three species of tropical Oncopeltus (Heteroptera, Lygaeidae). Opposition in females and general movement in both sexes peaked in the middle to late light period. In contrast, feeding and mating peaked at the end of the light period and the beginning of the dark respectively. Other behaviours also tended to display one or the other of these patterns. The diel timing of behaviour observed in this study essentially duplicated the periodicities of a migratory population of Oncopeltus fasciatus from Iowa. The similarity of results across species and populations suggests a general pattern for the genus which probably serves to synchronize behaviours with environmental cycles and appropriate physiology. This similarity is interesting in view of the broad geographical range of the genus across both temperate zone and tropics and in view of the differences among populations with respect to photoperiodic determination of diapause. 相似文献

Shoal position can have a strong influence on individual fitness. Individuals in front positions of shoals were observed to have higher feeding rates than individuals elsewhere. Manipulation of nutritional state showed that hungry individuals had a stronger preference for front positions and that the duration of food-deprivation was positively correlated with the degree of the position preference. On the other hand, front positions (like other peripheral positions) probably incur costs in terms of increased predation risks. Experiments with Schreckstoff showed that frightened individuals seek the central part of the shoal. This suggests that individuals rotate their shoal positions according to the tradeoff between energy intake and predation risk. 相似文献

The rates of upstream and downstream range expansion of the round goby (Neogobius melanostomus) were examined in the Trent-Severn Waterway in 2009 and 2010. Relative abundance, demographics, and habitat use were also compared between areas of range expansion and a longer established area to determine how these characteristics varied along the invasion pathway. Round gobies were sampled using an angling removal method in May and August of 2009 and 2010 at 75 sites at each area of range expansion and 25 sites near the center of their range where they first became established in the waterway. Areas of range expansion had initially low abundance and low site occupancy in May 2009 relative to the longer established area. Large increases in abundance and site occupancy were observed over the first summer of occupation, but with limited range expansion. Rapid range expansion was observed during the non-reproductive season at the upstream edge of range. Individuals sampled in the expanded upstream range were small and female biased relative to other range locations. Round gobies also exhibited higher habitat selectivity for rocky substrates at range edges than in the longer established area. These characteristics of seasonal dispersal, biased demographics of dispersers, and high habitat selectivity may be important components of successful range expansion of the round goby in invaded ecosystems. 相似文献

Genetic patterns across an invasion's history: a test of change versus stasis for the Eurasian round goby in North America 下载免费PDF全文
Carol A. Stepien 《Molecular ecology》2017,26(4):1075-1090
Biological invasions comprise accidental evolutionary experiments, whose genetic compositions underlie relative success, spread and persistence in new habitats. However, little is known about whether, or how, their population genetic patterns change temporally and/or spatially across the invasion's history. Theory predicts that most would undergo founder effect, exhibit low genetic divergence across the new range and gain variation over time via new arriving propagules. To test these predictions, we analyse population genetic diversity and divergence patterns of the Eurasian round goby Neogobius melanostomus across the two decades of its North American invasion in the Laurentian Great Lakes, comparing results from 13 nuclear DNA microsatellite loci and mitochondrial DNA cytochrome b sequences. We test whether ‘genetic stasis’, ‘genetic replacement’ and/or ‘genetic supplement’ scenarios have occurred at the invasion's core and expansion sites, in comparison with its primary native source population in the Dnieper River, Black Sea. Results reveal pronounced genetic divergence across the exotic range, with population areas remaining genetically distinct and statistically consistent across two decades, supporting ‘genetic stasis’ and ‘founder takes most’. The original genotypes continue to predominate, whose high population growth likely outpaced the relative success of later arrivals. The original invasion core has stayed the most similar to the native source. Secondary expansion sites indicate slight allelic composition convergence towards the core population over time, attributable to some early ‘genetic supplementation’. The geographic and temporal coverage of this investigation offers a rare opportunity to discern population dynamics over time and space in context of invasion genetic theory vs. reality. 相似文献

The social structure and feeding behaviour of the benthic goby Rhinogobius sp. DA (dark type) were investigated in a small river in Shikoku, Japan, where nektonic fishes are absent. The gobies had overlapped home ranges but were often aggressive against conspecifics, especially of the same sex and similar body size. Their diet consisted mainly of aquatic invertebrates, but terrestrial invertebrates were also an important item. This contrasted with few terrestrial invertebrates in the diet of the conspecifics in an adjacent river harbouring a nektonic cyprinid fish. An increase in flow level greatly changed their feeding behaviour; on high flow days, a greater portion of the population appeared from the interstices of the bottom and more often rose into the water column to catch drift than on normal flow days. Plasticity of their feeding behaviour is discussed in terms of ecological release. 相似文献
