1. Zooplankton use macrophytes as day-time refuge areas when trying to escape from pelagic predators. But macrophytes can also host a diverse and abundant macroinvertebrate assemblage and zooplankton are also likely to face predacious macroinvertebrates once they enter the littoral zone. This study aimed to elucidate the role of macroinvertebrates in determining the refuge capacity of macrophytes.
2. We conducted a field enclosure experiment using plastic bags and complementary laboratory feeding trials to test how macroinvertebrates counteract the benefits to zooplankton of the macrophyte refuge. The field experiment consisted of three treatments with different macroinvertebrate assemblages: without predators (WP), low abundance and diversity (LAD) and high abundance and diversity of predators (HAD – which represents lake conditions).
3. Populations of Diaphanosoma brachyurum , Bosmina huaronensis and Moina micrura (Cladocera) and of both male and female Notodiaptomus incompositus (Copepoda, Calanoida) declined (by nearly 80%) in the presence of HAD in comparison to WP and LAD treatments.
4. Feeding trials revealed that Buenoa sp. (backswimmer), adults of Palaemonetes argentinus (grass shrimp) and Cyanallagma interruptum (damselfly) had a significant negative impact on cladocerans ( D. brachyurum, B. huaronensis ) and the calanoid copepod population (males, females and copepodites). These predators showed a strong predation effect ranging from 75% to 100% reductions of zooplankton populations.
5. The refuge effect offered by macrophytes to zooplankton depends on and is balanced by the predacious macroinvertebrate assemblage that plants host. The risk of confronting littoral predators is high and macroinvertebrate presence can turn the macrophytes into risky areas for zooplankton. 相似文献

The development of North Sea coastal plankton communities in four simultaneously filled plastic bags was followed for one month. To obtain a concentration of 5 ppb in the water phase a single dose of mercuric chloride was added to two of the bags. This addition had a close impact on the development of the phytoplankton, while that on the zooplankton and the decomposers was less clear. In the course of the experiment, methylation of the added mercury proceeded in the sediment in the bags. The plastic bag method seems to be a suitable tool in toxicological research. 相似文献

Identifying the relative importance of predation and resources in population dynamics has a long tradition in ecology, while interactions between them have been studied less intensively. In order to disentangle the effects of predation by juvenile fish, algal resource availability and their interactive effects on zooplankton population dynamics, we conducted an enclosure experiment where zooplankton were exposed to a gradient of predation of roach (Rutilus rutilus) at different algal concentrations. We show that zooplankton populations collapse under high predation pressure irrespective of resource availability, confirming that juvenile fish are able to severely reduce zooplankton prey when occurring in high densities. At lower predation pressure, however, the effect of predation depended on algal resource availability since high algal resource supply buffered against predation. Hence, we suggest that interactions between mass-hatching of fish, and the strong fluctuations in algal resources in spring have the potential to regulate zooplankton population dynamics. In a broader perspective, increasing spring temperatures due to global warming will most likely affect the timing of these processes and have consequences for the spring and summer zooplankton dynamics. 相似文献

1.Refuges that reduce fish-induced mortality of zooplankton are considered to be key factors in controlling phytoplankton growth in lake ecosystems. In order to better understand the role of physical refuges for zooplankton on zooplanktivorous fish-plankton relationships, an enclosure experiment was run in a mesotrophic lake. Even-link systems (zooplankton and phytoplankton) and odd-link systems (zooplanktivorous fish, zooplankton and phytoplankton) were established. We also established an odd-link system with a physical refuge for zooplankton where fish predation was limited in the upper half of the enclosure.
2.Fish negatively affected density and mean body length of herbivorous zooplankton and total zooplankton, filtering rates with some intermediate effects in the presence of the refuge. A clear refuge effect was observed for the dominant herbivore, Ceriodaphnia . On the other hand, the refuge seemed to increase the vulnerability of those taxa that aggregated in upper layers of the water column. Grazing was thus reduced in both odd-link systems.
3.The lack of significant correlation between nutrient availability and phytoplankton biomass in enclosures suggested a top-down control of algal growth in our experimental systems. In both odd-link systems ('fish' and 'refuge') phytoplankton biomass was significantly enhanced, and transparency was reduced in comparison with the even-link system. 相似文献

The nutrient, phytoplankton, and zooplankton dynamics in threeenclosed water columns (1300 m3) are described. Two of the enclosureswere mixed using a bubbling chamber at depth. Young chum salmon(Oncorhynchus keta) were added to one of the mixed enclosuresand the unmixed enclosure. No other manipulations were imposed.Copepods appeared in large numbers (e.g. especially Pseudocalanusminutus s.l. and Paracalanus parvus) and population growth rateswere estimated. Ctenophora did not appear in large numbers despitepresumably ideal food environments; it is suggested that inone enclosure this is a consequence of fish predation on thectenophores. The fish experienced high mortalities and low growthrates presumably due to unsuitable prey size. Weekly collectionsof sediment permitted isolation of two major sediment contributors, the first from phytoplankton sinking and the second from biogenkfallout associated with herbivore production. It was found thatthe more oligotrophic enclosure (unmixed) experienced proportionallyhigher utilization of organic carbon. Some of these resultsare explained by our data while others require more sophisticatedexperimentation, both in the design of the containers and inthe types of observations. 相似文献

Benthic test species used in toxicity assays are the best indicators of sediment toxicity because they live in direct contact with sediments and the water column. Mercury chloride is one the most toxic metallic salts. Its strong affinity for particles explains the high Hg content found in benthic populations. The genus Emerita is abundantly found in Venezuelan coasts and is a good bioaccumulator of pollutants, but the toxicological assays performend on this genus are scarce. The present experimental test reports on the distribution of mercury in the water column and sediment, using static bioassay in short term (24 hr) and the ability of Emerita portoricensis to bioconcentrate mercury under experimental conditions. Our results suggest that the Hg transference from water to sediment is enhanced in the presence of Emerita. The kinetic uptake of Hg in Emerita portoricensis shows a mechanism of rapid absorption reaching high metal concentrations in short exposure times. 相似文献

Bald eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) may be at risk from contaminants in their diet and young birds may be particularly sensitive to contaminant exposure. To evaluate potential risks from dietary mercury exposure to eagle nestlings in South Carolina (USA), we surveyed mercury concentrations in 34 nestlings over two breeding seasons (1998 and 1999). Samples were also obtained from several post-fledging eagles in the region. Nestling feather mercury ranged from 0.61-6.67 micrograms Hg/g dry weight, nestling down mercury from 0.50-5.05 micrograms Hg/g dry weight, and nestling blood mercury from 0.02-0.25 microgram Hg/g wet weight. We did not detect significant differences in tissue mercury between nestlings from coastal and inland regions in contrast to some other studies of piscivorous birds. Mercury concentrations were much higher in the post fledging birds we sampled. Our data show that nestling eagles in South Carolina are accumulating mercury, and that concentrations in older birds may exceed regulatory guidelines. 相似文献

Approximately 6000 l of lake water was suspended in large, clear plastic chambers in Lake Powell, Arizona. The chambers were monitored during 24 h incubation periods in the spring and summer 1974 and 1975. Physico-chemical differences between the natural lake system and within the experimental chambers were negligible. Experimental mercury concentrations ranging from < 0.02 to 1.25 ppm were added to the chambers to determine the effect of elevated Hg concentrations on in situ primary production. Mercury concentrations were monitored in the water column of each chamber during each 24 h incubation period to determine absolute concentrations following reduction through adsorption, absorption and vaporization. At least a 40% reduction in photosynthetic activity occurred at Hg concentrations as low as 0.06 ppm. A toxic Hg threshold concentration of 0.06 ppm was demonstrated for the summer phytoplankton assemblage, but a distinct threshold concentration was absent for the spring diatom assemblage. Differences in spring and summer phytoplankton populations may suggest subtle differences in Hg sensitivity between phytoplankton assemblages in combination with temperature acting on total community metabolism. 相似文献

The seasonal abundance of gamma-subclass Proteobacteria, Vibrio-Photobacterium, Vibrio cholerae-Vibrio mimicus, Vibrio cincinnatiensis, and Vibrio vulnificus in the Choptank River of Chesapeake Bay associated with zooplankton was monitored from April to December 1996. Large (>202- microm) and small (64- to 202- microm) size classes of zooplankton were collected, and the bacteria associated with each of the zooplankton size classes were enumerated by fluorescent oligonucleotide direct count. Large populations of bacteria were found to be associated with both the large and small size classes of zooplankton. Also, the species of bacteria associated with the zooplankton showed seasonal abundance, with the largest numbers occurring in the early spring and again in the summer, when zooplankton total numbers were correspondingly large. Approximately 0.01 to 40.0% of the total water column bacteria were associated with zooplankton, with the percentage of the total water column bacteria population associated with zooplankton varying by season. A taxonomically diverse group of bacteria was associated with zooplankton, and a larger proportion was found in and on zooplankton during the cooler months of the year, with selected taxa comprising a larger percent of the Bacteria in the summer. V. cholerae-V. mimicus and V. vulnificus comprised the bulk of the large and small zooplankton-associated Vibrio-Photobacterium species. In contrast, V. cincinnatiensis accounted for less than 0.1 to 3%. It is concluded that water column and zooplankton bacterial populations vary independently with respect to species composition since no correlation was observed between taxa occurring with highest frequency in the water column and those in association with zooplankton. 相似文献

In situ life table of a subtropical copepod 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
GRACE A. WYNGAARD 《Freshwater Biology》1983,13(3):275-281
- 1 A life table of a subtropical population of Mesocyclops edax(Copepoda: Cyclopoida) was constructed from a cohort of individuals reared in enclosures in a small, eutrophic lake.
- 2 The lake population was sampled concurrently to determine age structure, per capita birth, death and growth rates, body size and clutch size.
- 3 Maturation times of enclosed males and females were 9.3 and 11.4 days, respectively. The population growth rate. r. was estimated to be 0.18 females day-1 for the enclosed population, but approximated zero on most dates in the lake population. Mortality was low in the enclosures which excluded predators and high in the field population exposed to planktivorous fish and Chaoborus.
- 4 The means and variances of several fitness traits are related to the specific environment. The enclosure approach promises to be a useful tool in the study of zooplankton life history variation.

A detailed characterization is presented of the spring diatom bloom which occurred in the enclosed experimental ecosystem bags at Loch Ewe, Scotland, during March–April 1983. The nutrient condition and bacterial biomass of the water column, phytoplankton species distribution, gross biochemical composition and detailed lipid composition (lipid class, fatty acid and free sterol) of the phytoplankton are reported throughout the bloom period. The results are compared with results from previous years. The conclusions are that major changes take place in the biochemical composition of a rapidly growing diatom population which affect both the gross composition and also the more detailed lipid composition. Such changes can take place over a matter of days and appear to be very dependent upon available growth conditions. Both carbohydrate and lipids levels increase towards the end of the bloom as nitrate and silicate levels are depleted in the water. Neutral lipids are shown to be important lipid components of the phytoplankton populations and long-chain ω3 polyunsaturated fatty acids are found to be only minor components of the structural polar lipids. The fatty acid and sterol data are discussed in relation to present knowledge concerning phytoplankton lipid composition. 相似文献

Enclosed populations of pine mice were studied over a 28-month period and compared with populations in surrounding natural areas. The enclosed populations reached densities far greater than any observed in surrounding natural areas. It is suggested that the restriction placed on dispersal by the enclosure walls and the addition of food in the form of trap bait could have allowed the enclosed populations to reach higher densities than normally observed at SRP. 相似文献

Selenium–Mercury Interactions in Man and Animals 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Selenium–mercury interactions were most extensively studied in relation to alleviation of Hg toxicity by added selenium. This
presentation considers the influence of mercury on endogenous selenium, on its tissue and cellular “status” after lifelong
or acute exposure to mercury vapor (Hgo). Discussed are data obtained from (1) humans living near or working in a mercury mine, and (2) rats experimentally exposed
in the mine. Mercury vapor is unique—or similar to methylmercury—because of its ability to penetrate cell membranes and so
invade all cells, where it is oxidized in the biologically active form (Hg++) by catalase. Such in situ-generated ions can react with endogenously generated highly reactive Se metabolites, like HSe−,
and render a part of the selenium unavailable for selenoprotein synthesis. Data on human populations indicate that in moderate
Hg exposure combined with an adequate selenium supply through diet, Se bioavailability can be preserved. On the other hand,
the results of an acute exposure study emphasize the dual role of selenium in mercury detoxification. Besides the well-known
Se coaccumulation through formation of nontoxic Hg–Se complexes, we observed noticeable Se (co)excretion, at least at the
beginning of exposure. The higher Hg accumulation rate in the group of animals with lower basal selenium levels can also point
to selenium involvement in mercury excretion. In such conditions there is a higher probability for decreased selenoprotein
levels (synthesis) in some tissues or organs, depending on the synthesis hierarchy. 相似文献

Three large plastic enclosures (5 m diam, volume 40 m3) were used to study the effects of copper, manganese and zinc, on the phytoplankton community in Island billabong, a floodplain billabong (waterhole) situated in the Magela Creek in tropical northern Australia. Copper was added to one enclosure, and manganese and zinc to another, to give initial concentrations around ten times the normal wet season values. The enclosures and the billabong were monitored over a ten week period towards the end of the dry season, with the enclosures allowed to stabilise for four weeks before the metals were added. The control enclosure adequately simulated the temperature and pH changes in the billabong. The trends in conductivity, dissolved oxygen and major ion concentrations were similar in the enclosure and the billabong, with the minor differences observed attributed to either epiphytic growth on the enclosure walls (influenced dissolved oxygen, pH and bicarbonate concentration) or ingress of sulphate-rich groundwater into the billabong (influenced sulphate concentration and conductivity). Major differences in both the composition of species and the size of the phytoplankton populations were observed between the three enclosures and between the control enclosure and the billabong. This variability reflects the great natural variability in the phytoplankton communities in tropical lentic systems, and means that enclosures are unlikely to adequately simulate the biological communities in the billabongs. The control enclosure appeared to simulate quite well the longer term changes in total concentration and speciation of the three metals (copper, manganese & zinc) in the billabong. The mean concentrations of copper and zinc were similar in the two systems, although the mean concentration of manganese in the billabong was almost double that in the enclosure, possibly due to ingress of manganese-enriched groundwater. Particulate forms dominated the speciation of copper and manganese. There was considerable short term variation in both total metal concentration and speciation in both the enclosure and the billabong. This variability appears to be a feature of these small tropical waterbodies. The added heavy metals were found to have minimal detrimental effect on the phytoplankton community in each metal-loaded enclosure. The high natural variability in the phytoplankton community in these tropical systems will make it difficult to separate natural changes from those caused by low level contamination from mining operations should this occur. All three metals were rapidly removed from the water column, so that by the end of the six week period, only ca. 5% of each added metal remained in the water column. Association with the particulate matter (phytoplankton, abiotic particulate matter and MnOx in enclosure 2) followed by sedimentation was the major removal pathway. Epiphytes growing on the enclosure walls appeared to have a minor influence (<10% of the total amount of metal added) on the removal of the added metals. For copper, uptake by phytoplankton followed by sedimentation was the major (65%) removal process. Manganese and zinc, added together, were found to influence each other. The major manganese removal process (60%) was rapid (ca. 3 days) involving bacterial oxidation and sedimentation of the MnOx formed. This material appeared to have little influence on the behaviour of zinc, possibly because other particulate matter competed more effectively for the zinc. A further 30% of the added manganese was removed via initial adsorption to other particulate matter, possibly phytoplankton. Approximately one third of this adsorbed manganese (10% of the total added) appeared to undergo delayed oxidation some 8 days after the initial additions, and the heavier particles settled out more rapidly. This path was responsible for removing the major amount (ca. 60%) of the added zinc. We hypothesis that the sorbed zinc inhibited the bacterial oxidation of the manganese. A further 25% of the zinc was removed in association with a burst of phytoplankton activity. The occurrence of bursts in the phytoplankton activity, when populations can increase very substantially and then decrease again, all within the space of a day, appears to be an important mechanism for removing copper and zinc from the water column in these tropical water bodies 相似文献

Specific interactions of mercury chloride with membranes and other ligands as revealed by mercury-NMR. 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2

High resolution mercury nuclear magnetic resonance (199Hg-NMR) experiments have been performed in order to monitor mercury chemical speciation when HgCl2 is added to water solutions and follow mercury binding properties towards biomembranes or other ligands. Variations of 199Hg chemical shifts by several hundred ppm depending upon pH and/or pCl changes or upon ligand or membrane addition afforded to determine the thermodynamic parameters which describe the equilibria between the various species in solution. By comparison to an external reference, the decrease in concentration of mercury species in solution allowed to estimate the amount as well as the thermodynamic parameters of unlabile mercury-ligand or mercury-membrane complexes. Hence, some buffer molecules can be classified in a scale of increasing complexing power towards Hg(II): EGTA greater than Tris greater than HEPES. In contrast, MOPS, Borax, phosphates and acetates show little complexation properties for mercury, in our experimental conditions. Evidence for complexation with phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), phosphatidylserine (PS) and human erythrocyte membranes has been found. Hg(II) does not form complexes with egg phosphatidylcholine membranes. Interaction with PE and PS model membranes can be described by the presence of two mercury sites, one labile, the other unlabile, in the NMR time scale. In the labile site Hg(PE) and Hg(PS)2 would be formed whereas in the unlabile site Hg(II) would establish bridges between three PE or PS molecules. Calculated thermodynamic data clearly indicate that PE is a better complexing agent than PS. Evidence is also found that complexation with lipids uses at first the HgCl2 species. Interestingly, mercury complexation with ligands or membranes can be completely reversed by addition of decimolar NaCl solutions. Minute mechanisms for mercury complexation with the primary amine of PE or PS membrane head groups are discussed. 相似文献

A mercury-hyperresistant strain of Pseudomonas aeruginosa PU21 harboring plasmid Rip64 was utilized to develop bioprocesses able to detoxify and recover soluble mercuric ions in aquatic systems. The kinetics of mercury detoxification was investigated to determine the parameters needed for the design of the bioprocesses. Batch, fed-batch, and continuous bioreactors were utilized to evaluate the efficiency and feasibility of each mode of operation. The results showed that the specific mercury detoxification rate was dependent on cell growth phases, as well as the initial mercury concentrations. Cells at the lag growth phase exhibited the best specific detoxification rate of approximately 1.1 x 10(-6) microg Hg/cell/h, and the rate was optimal at an initial mercury concentration of 8 mg/L. In batch operations with initial mercuric ions ranging from 2 to 10 mg/L, the mercuric ions added were rapidly volatilized from the media in less than 2-3 h. With periodic feeding of 3 or 5 mg Hg/L at fixed time intervals, the fed-batch processes had mercury removal efficiencies of 2.9 and 3.3 mg Hg/h/L, respectively. For continuous operations, the effluent cell concentration (Xe) was essentially invariant at 527 and 523 mg/L with the dilution rates (D) of 0.18 and 0.325 h-1, respectively. The increase in mercury feeding concentrations (Hgf) from 1.0 to 6.15 mg Hg2+/L did not affect the steady-state cell concentration (Xe) but forced the effluent mercury concentration (Hge) to increase. The decrease in the dilution rate, however, resulted in lower Hge values. It was also found that sequential mercury vapor absorption columns recovered over 80% of the Hg degrees released from the bioreactor while the residual mercury vapor was subsequently immobilized by an activated carbon trap in the down stream of the absorption column. 相似文献

Seabirds are top predators of the marine environment that accumulate contaminants over a long life-span. Chronic exposure to pollutants is thought to compromise survival rate and long-term reproductive outputs in these long-lived organisms, thus inducing population decline. However, the demographic consequences of contaminant exposure are largely theoretical because of the dearth of long-term datasets. This study aims to test whether adult survival rate, return to the colony and long-term breeding performance were related to blood mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd) and persistent organic pollutants (POPs), by using a capture–mark–recapture dataset on the vulnerable wandering albatross Diomedea exulans. We did not find evidence for any effect of contaminants on adult survival probability. However, blood Hg and POPs negatively impacted long-term breeding probability, hatching and fledging probabilities. The proximate mechanisms underlying these deleterious effects are likely multifaceted, through physiological perturbations and interactions with reproductive costs. Using matrix population models, we projected a demographic decline in response to an increase in Hg or POPs concentrations. This decline in population growth rate could be exacerbated by other anthropogenic perturbations, such as climate change, disease and fishery bycatch. This study gives a new dimension to the overall picture of environmental threats to wildlife populations. 相似文献

Summary The relationship of the mummichog, Fundulus heteroclitus, to its food supply was examined using 8 m x 20 m enclosures under field conditions. Density effects were examined by stocking these enclosures with fish at densities ranging from 1/8 to four times the natural population density. Mean growth rate in each pen was estimated from measurements on individually marked fish. Fish enclosed at normal density grew at the same rate as fish from the natural population, indicating that caging had minimal effects on growth rate. When enclosed below natural density, mummichogs had a growth rate that was 2–3 times higher than that of the natural population. Fish enclosed at four times normal density had a negative mean growth rate, a higher mortality rate than fish enclosed at natural density, and no egg production. In further experiments, food was added to the same type of enclosure at fish densities ranging from one-half to four times natural density. Food additions had a positive effect on growth rate at all densities. Food additions also caused egg production of fish enclosed at the highest density to increase to a rate equivalent with the natural population. We conclude that the total food supply may regulate the maximum size of the Canary Creek mummichog population by affecting the individual growth rate, mortality rate, and fecundity. 相似文献

SUMMARY. In a small lake (Blelham Tarn, English Lake District) two plastic cylinders, each of which extends from the lake surface to the bottom sediments and encloses 18 000 m3 of water, were used to investigate effects of enclosure on the zooplankton. This paper describes observations from March 1973 to October 1974 and is the second part of a report on a project spanning 4 years.
Seasonal population densities of the more abundant species were essentially similar to those observed in the first part of the project, despite large changes in algal and predator populations. In the enclosures, fish (mostly Perca fluviatilis ) populations are known from observations by divers to have been large in the period under consideration and small in the first part of the project. Populations of Chaoborus larvae in the enclosures were small at all seasons from March 1973 to October 1974. 相似文献
