Dugesia bengalensis was described by Kawakatsu (Kawakatsu et al., 1983) from specimens collected in West Bengal. We have been studying populations from many different localities in Santiniketan and adjoining areas of West Bengal and can provide additional biological information. The species is hermaphroditic, and its breeding season was found to occur usually between October and March when the winter temperature falls below 25 °C. Outside of the breeding season, D. bengalensis is capable of asexual reproduction by binary fission (Mahapatra et al., 1987).Development of the reproductive organs appeared to be from neoblasts and other mesenchymal cells and, therefore, to be like that typical of other triclads with the exception that some of the neoblasts used for the reproductive tissue appeared to be derived from the intestinal region (Ghosh, 1988; cf. Teshirogi, 1986).During copulation, the partners were oriented in the same direction and not in a head-to-tail position as has been reported (Hyman, 1945) for some planarians. The oval, stalked cocoons were laid in marshy places, and during the period of summer (usually from April to June) they lay dormant in the sandy soil until the onset of the monsoon rains. Then, typically three or four months after they were laid, the cocoons hatched to yield three or four young, a remarkably low number for freshwater triclads (cf Ball & Reynoldson, 1981).  相似文献

Dugesia sanchezi reproduces in nature both sexually and by fission. Laboratory cultures have shown that fissioning is controlled by genetic factors. From sexual specimens randomly mated, 105 sexual and five fissiparous offspring were obtained. The former produced almost exclusively sexual descendents while the latter gave rise to fissiparous individuals, although successively many of them became sexual. These ex-fissiparous specimens show a high fertility and their offspring were almost all fissiparous, with the same characteristics displayed by the preceeding fissiparous generation. Some hypotheses are advanced in order to attempt a genetical interpretation of these results.  相似文献

Summary Urastoma cyprinae (Graff) is a microturbellarian which has been recorded both as a free-living organism by Westblad (1955) and Marcus (1951) and as a commensal in various lamellibranch molluscs (see Burt & Drinnan 1968). The material used in this study came from oysters, Crassostroea virginica, collected off the coast of Prince Edward Island, in which hosts it occurs in large numbers especially during the summer months when the oysters are spawning (Fleming et al. 1981). When U. cyprinae is exposed to light as happens, for example, when an oyster is opened, it shows a marked negative phototactic response.Preliminary work on the fine structure of the photoreceptors in U. cyprinae shows that the two eyes each consists of: (1) a single cup cell full of relatively large, electron-dense pigment granules; (2) a tripartite conical lens system; and (3) what appear to be two photosensitive rhabdomes. The pigment cup cell has a single, well defined nucleus situated basally and close to the membrane of the pigment cell furthest away from the rhabdomeres. The lens system consists of a cone made up of three, separate but equal, parts. Each part has two, flat inner surfaces which join at an angle of 120°, an outer rounded surface, and a rounded upper surface. When these three parts fit together, the cone-shaped lens is formed with the apex of the lens within the cup of the pigment cell and the rounded, convex, broad end of the cone lying more or less at the same level as the top of the pigment cup and below the epidermis layer. The rhabdomeres lie between the electron dense lenses and the inside of the pigment cup. They show connections to the visual cells which are bipolar: one extension joining the rhabdomeres; the other constituting the axon which extends into the centrally situated brain or into the longitudinal, lateral nerves. The axons that enter the brain, form connections with other axons from the other eye. The axons that extend posteriorly in a lateral position, presumably play a role in facilitating the avoidance reaction. The chemical nature of the unusual lens has not yet been determined. This is presently under investigation and will be reported later at which time our work will be discussed in relation to other types of rhabdomeric eyes in the Turbellaria.  相似文献

The intensity of infection of the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis Lamarck in the Black Sea by the turbellarian Urastoma cyprinae (Graff), which lives on its gills, was found to be higher in larger hosts, reaching a maximum in mussels of 50–70 mm length. Greater numbers occured in mussels inhabiting a silty bottom than in cultivated mussels suspended above the bottom. Over the period 1982–1987, U. cyprinae was most numerous in winter and especially so in years that were colder. The spionid polychaete Polydora ciliata (Johnston) also infects M. galloprovincialis, burrowing into the shell. Young spionids of up to 1 mm length occured in mussels with a shell length of 35 mm. Numbers of this commensal reached a maximum in mussels of intermediate size.  相似文献

The earliest detectable change during regeneration of the gastrodermis in Dugesia japonica was an aggregation of regenerative cells underneath the gastrodermis remaining at the wound margin. The gastrodermal cells in experimental regenerates retained some of their original characters and presented no indication of cell dedifferentiation. The regenerative cells came into contact with the basal surface of gastrodermal cells, forming stratified cell layers. Differentiation of these cells into gastrodermal cells was initiated by the development of synthetic organelles within their cytoplasm. These differentiating cells gave rise to two different types of gastrodermal cells, namely phagocytic cells and sphere cells. In later stages, there was an apparent movement of differentiated gastrodermal cells towards the parenchyma.  相似文献

The genus Procerodes forms a heterogeneous assemblage of taxa. Although it is premature to attempt phylogenetic weighting of the characters, the genus contains three well delimited subgroups, one with a subantarctic, panaustral distribution, one world-wide in distribution, and one occurring principally in the northern hemisphere. Outside of these subgroups, species in this genus are problematic since a number of their features also occurs in other procerodids. All recognized groups exhibit a wide distributional range. Many of the world-wide taxonomic relations lie on the species level and some at the level of genera. Poor dispersal capacity of extant species of Procerodes suggests that the biogeographic patterns may be very old.  相似文献

To attempt a complete review of turbellarian ecology in the time and space available would result in superficiality. Therefore, I have restricted this account to the four basic ecological processes which have and continue to determine flatworm distribution and abundance. These are: (1) historical or zoogeographical events which permit or prevent a species from reaching a habitat; (2) physiological limitations of the species vis à vis the habitat; (3) access to suitable energy sources and (4) the effects of competition, predation and parasitism, referred to collectively as bionomic processes.  相似文献

The biology of female Epiplatys bifasciatus (Steindachner, 1881) from the Sudd region of southern Sudan was investigated. The population was dominated by females whose growth in body dimensions relative to total length was found to be linear. The reproductive system differs from that of oviparous teleosts in having a portion of the ovary (anterior) modified for carrying the developing brood. Gradual development of oocytes towards the nursing portion of the ovary, and low absolute fecundity of the brood, suggests a rather long breeding season (June to September).A large variety of food organisms belonging to three main groups, viz. insects, crustaceans and arachnids, were taken by Epiplatys collected from the littoral zones of two rivers, the Bahr El Ghazal and the White Nile. Little variation occurred in the food of these two populations. Chironomid larvae showed the highest occurrence frequency in the fish food for both localities, and insects in general constituted over 80% of all organisms eaten.  相似文献

On some commensal Turbellaria of the Canadian East Coast   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:1
The brachyurans Chionoecetes opilio and Hyas araneus collected from the east coast of Canada harbour two species of commensal turbellarians. Ectocotyla hirudo (Levinsen) and E. multitesticulata Fleming & Burt are found on the gills and branchial chambers of male and female crabs. The molluscs Crassostrea virginica and Mytilus edulis collected from several locations where they are cultured along the Northumberland strait carry two commensal eulecithophoran turbellarians, both on the gills, viz., Urasloma cyprinae (Graff) and Paravortex gemellipara (Linton), the latter being a new host record. Aspects of the biology and life-history of these turbellarians are discussed, especially in relationship to the biology of their hosts.Abbreviations in the figures A Atrium - An Antrum - C Capsule - CO Common Oviduct - E Embryo - Ep Egg-laying pore - GP Genital Pore - I Intestine - O Ovary - Od Oviduct - Og Ora-genital Pore - Ph Pharynx - Sp Sperm - SV Seminal Vesicle - T Testes - Va Vagina - Y Yolk  相似文献

Some species of Planarians, new to Spain, are recorded. Dugesia polychroa, D. sicula, D. iberica and D. gonocephala s. 1. have been investigated karyologically. The former possesses a diploid complement characteristic of the biotype A (2n = 8); the second is diploid with 2n = 18; diploidy and triploidy were found in sexual populations of D. iberica with n = 8. Triploidy occurred in all the asexual strains of the D. gonocephala group with a basic number of either 8 or 9. In this latter case B-chromosomes were occasionally found.  相似文献

Immunocytochemical characterization of the neuropeptides FMRF-amide and serotonin (5-HT) is a well-known method successfully applied to demonstrate nervous-system morphology in several platyhelminths (see Wikgren & Reuter, 1985, and Reuter, 1988, for review). We have immunolabeled whole-mount preparations of Macrostomum hystricinum marinum Rieger from cultures (see Rieger et al., 1988) with anti-SALMF-amide, an antibody specific for the C-terminal pentapeptide sequence of the neuropeptide GNFSALMF-amide recently isolated from echinoderms (source M. Thorndyke, England). Immunoreactivity to SALMF-amide gave a more detailed picture of the nervous system of M. hystricinum than FMRF-amide. Conventional light microscopy (Luther, 1905) shows this nervous system to consist of a bilobed brain, a pharyngeal nerve-ring system, a posterior commissure, and two main ventrolateral nerve cords. Immunostaining reveals, in addition, two thin paired longitudinal nerve strands and fine subepithelial and submuscular nerve nets. Anti-SALMF-amide labels a distinct class of neurons, causing the main lateral longitudinal cords and pharyngeal nerve-ring system to appear more filamentous than with other techniques. Recent fine-structural investigations on the nervous system of Macrostomum hystricinum marinum revealed several axon types with characteristic vesicles and neurotubules (D. R. pers. obs.). The ontogenetic changes in the distribution, abundance, and size of rhabdoids were examined in an undisturbed laboratory population of Dugesia polychroa. Irrespective of triclad age, rhabdoids in the epidermis and parenchyma were more abundant on the dorsal than the ventral side of the body. No significant differences were found in the abundance of epidermal or parenchymal rhabdoids among the anterior, medial, and posterior regions of the body. Rhabdoid number and size changed significantly with triclad age, with a marked depression coinciding with the onset of cocoon production. Rhabdoid discharge was correlated with physical and/or physiological disturbance and occurred in the absence of any overt environmental disturbance. Simple allometric relationships were observed between rhabdoid size and number on one hand and body plan area on the other. Different allometric trends were observed from field-collected individuals compared to the undisturbed laboratory population. The potential function of rhabdoids in the Tricladida is discussed in light of these findings.  相似文献

Information on biometric and biological parameters of Cancer bellianus Johnson, 1861 (Crustacea, Decapoda, Brachyura, Cancridae) off the Canary Islands is given. Crabs examined were collected during experimental fishing surveys during 1974–1998. Carapace length, carapace width, total wet weight, sex and ovigerous condition were determined. This species was caught at depths from 153 to 750 m, the deepest ever recorded. Size frequency distributions were assembled and size-weight relationships were estimated by sex. Sex-ratio as a function of size and depth was determined. The size at first maturity was calculated by analysing the relative growth between the carapace length and the left chela width: 103.5 mm CL in males, 101.2 mm CL in females. Ovigerous females, egg size and fecundity estimates are reported apparently for the first time.  相似文献

The epidermis and associated structures of adult and embryonic Paravortex cardii and Paravortex karlingi, internal parasites of Cerastoderma edule, have been examined using scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The cellular epidermis of adult Paravortex bears cilia and microvilli which differ in number and distribution between P. karlingi and P. cardii. Cellular organelles include mitochondria, lipid bodies, Golgi bodies, and ultrarhabdites. Epidermal nuclei are located in the proximal portion of the cells. The development of the tegument of embryo Paravortex has been described and a possible origin for the embryo capsule is suggested. These findings are discussed in relation to the phylogenetic status of the Turbellaria in relation to other Platyhelminthes and in the functional adaptation of the epidermis for a parasitic mode of life.Abbreviations bb- basal bodies - bl- basal lamella - c- cilia - cp- capsule - dc- dark cells - e- embryos - ep- epidermis - g- Golgi bodies - int- interdigitation (of cells) - l- lipid - lf- lamellar fold - mc- migrating cell - mf- membranous folds - mt- mitochondria - mv- microvilli - n- nucleus - nb- neoblasts - p- projections of epidermis - par- parenchyma of mother - pr- primary rootlet - rc- rhabditogen cells - sr- secondary rootlet - ur- ultrarhabdites - vt- vitelline material  相似文献

The common short-bodied species of Bipalium does not fragment, but individuals of two newly discovered long-bodied species — B. nobile Kawakatsu & Makino, 1982, and B. multilineatum Makino & Shirasawa, 1983 — do regularly fission, usually behind the mouth or genital pore. Some experimental regenerates of these species form rings by adhesion of the anterior with the posterior cut surface. We found two other forms of Bipalium, perhaps representing a further two species, in Hino City, Tokyo, in 1983; and we have preliminarily arranged the forms of Bipalium known in the region into four groups distinguished on the basis of body coloring, position of the mouth, and structure of the copulatory organ.  相似文献

One of the biotypes of the planarian Dugesia benazzii is triploid in the somatic line, hexaploid in the female line owing to a chromosome set doubling, and diploid in the male line due to a haploid set elimination. In a population of this biotype only 50% of the oocytes are hexaploid, the others being triploid as a results of the lack of set doubling; the male line is always diploid. After a long period of laboratory culture most of the individuals became asexual and fissiparous. Almost all the oocytes of the few specimens which have remained sexual showed triploid complement; B-chromosomes also appeared. These events represent the manifestation of a new genetic background which act upon the two germ lines in different ways and moments. These topics are discussed.  相似文献

We conducted a field survey for flatworms to select species as potential biological control agents against Aedes aegypti and Culex pipiens (Diptera, Culicidae) breeding in artificial containers. Laboratory experiments were performed to determine the daily predation rate, differential predation on each mosquito larval instar, selective predation on either A. aegypti or C. pipiens, and predator tolerance to water from artificial containers. Girardia anceps (Tricladida, Paludicola, Dugesiidae), Mesostoma ehrenbergii and Bothromesostoma cf. evelinae (Rhabdocoela, Typhloplanoida, Typhloplanidae) were found in temporary puddles and permanent pools. In the laboratory, they killed between 52% and 100% of immature mosquitoes coexisting in the same habitat. No preference of flatworms for mosquito preys was detected. Predation rate was related to predator size and instar of preys. Girardia anceps and B. evelinae survived after a dry period and when re-flooding occurred, they laid eggs. Tolerance to water from artificial containers was highest in G. anceps and this species could be a suitable predator to reduce mosquito populations from artificial containers using an inoculative approach.  相似文献

Planktonic Turbellaria are of common occurrence in both natural and man-made lakes in Brazil. Experiments were performed in 1987 and 1989 to determine which zooplankton species are consumed by predatory Mesostoma sp. from three natural lakes in the Rio Doce Valley. Experiments were also performed in 1989 with a yet unidentified flatworm from Barra Bonita reservoir. Both predators consumed Daphnia and Ceriodaphnia at a high rate: 4 individuals per day in the case of Mesostoma sp., a large species and 1.5 ind day–1 in the case of the smaller species from Barra Bonita reservoir. Consumption of copepod nauplii, copepodids and adults was much lower, and Ostracoda were not consumed at all. Experiments on food selectivity showed a clear preference by the flatworms for cladocerans. In the lakes studied, flatworms are heavily preyed upon by larvae of Chaoborus and by Mesocyclops species.Turbellaria densities in the natural lakes were around 300 individuals per cubic meter, whereas in Barra Bonita reservoir, 1000 individuals per cubic meter was a mean value in a fifteen days study.Federal University of São Carlos - Laboratory of LimnologyUniversity of São Paulo - Canter of Water Resource and Applied EcologyPost-graduate student - University of São Paulo  相似文献

Five specimens, presumably representing different developmental stages of the land planarian Kontikia mexicana (Hyman, 1939), were used to reconstruct the development of the copulatory apparatus in this species. The results support the notion that Kontikia differs from the closely related Caenoplana in its possession of a penis papilla. In the earliest stage available, a penis papilla was absent and other components were not differentiated. In a late-juvenile condition, the gonopore, seminal vesicle, and ejaculatory duct were present. The short penis papilla appeared to arise in this stage by elongation of the terminal tissue around the ejaculatory duct and its separation from the antral wall. The female canal was guarded by an epithelial fold and the glandular duct was present. In the mature condition, the penis papilla was more elongate, and the secretory (prostatic) region of the ejaculatory duct was functional. The female canal, guarded by an epithelial fold, was well-developed with enlarged glandular duct but lacking the posterior diverticulum and the sperm storage system associated with the ovovitelline ducts known in Kontikia orana Froehlich, 1955.  相似文献

Myoretronectes paranaensis, gen. et sp. n., from lotic sandy bottoms of the Paraná river, Argentina, is described. The establishment of the new genus is based on the presence of a non-ciliated pharynx, a discrete oesophagus, and a strong muscle system surrounding the distal pharynx. A new emended diagnosis of the family Retronectidae is presented. Myoretronectes paranaensis apparently cohabits with the oligochaete Narapa bonettoi Righi & Varela, 1983 and the copepod Parastenocaris sp.  相似文献
