Shallow-water vegetated estuarine habitats, notably seagrass, mangrove and saltmarsh, are known to be important habitats for many species of small or juvenile fish in temperate Australia. However, the movement of fish between these habitats is poorly understood, and yet critical to the management of the estuarine fisheries resource. We installed a series of buoyant pop nets in adjacent stands of seagrass, mangrove and saltmarsh in order to determine how relative abundance of fishes varied through lunar cycles. Nets were released in all habitats at the peak of the monthly spring tide for 12 months, and in the seagrass habitat at the peak of the neap tide also. The assemblage of fish in each habitat differed during the spring tides. The seagrass assemblage differed between spring and neap tide, with the neap tide assemblage showing greater abundances of fish, particularly those species which visited the adjacent habitats when inundated during spring tides. The result supports the hypothesis that fish move from the seagrass to the adjacent mangrove and saltmarsh during spring tides, taking advantage of high abundances of zooplankton, and use seagrass as a refuge during lower tides. The restoration and preservation of mangrove and saltmarsh utility as fish habitat may in some situations be linked to the proximity of available seagrass.  相似文献

Temporal changes in larval fish species composition and abundance compared with other components of the seston are described in four estuarine habitats in the Atrato Delta, Colombia. In comparison with zooplankton, fish larvae and egg density and anthropogenic debris abundance were low in the South Atrato Delta. Transparency, water temperature and chlorophyll a were the major factors influencing the spatiotemporal distribution of ichthyoplankton in the delta. The most abundant fish larvae were Astyanax sp. 1, Anchovia clupeoides, Cetengraulis edentulus, Anchoa sp., Bathygbius curacao, Dormitator maculatus, Hyporhamphus sp., Atherinella blackburni, Gobiosoma sp. 1 and Menticirrhus americanus (92·8% of total abundance). Spatial temporal analysis shows that in this delta, shrub (arracachal) and grass (eneal) habitats are important for freshwater and estuarine species, whilst mudflat and mangrove are important for estuarine species and estuarine–marine species, since most flexion and post‐flexion stages of these species were found there. Anthropogenic debris density never surpassed the total ichthyoplankton density, but was ubiquitous. Shrub and mangrove habitats had higher densities of anthropogenic debris, since these are flood‐stem habitats that trap solids.  相似文献

Selective tidal-streaming is a model frequently used to explain how planktonic larvae invade estuaries. The ability of larvae to move vertically in the water column to selectively ride favourable currents and maintain ground gained is critical to this process. The mud crab (Scylla serrata) is a widely distributed, commercially and recreationally important portunid crab but little is known about its estuarine recruitment mechanisms or the vertical migration behaviour of its megalopae. In studies of the blue crab (Callinectes sapidus), important factors identified in the recruitment mechanism include altered vertical swimming behaviours in estuarine and offshore water and an endogenous circadian rhythm. Using laboratory experiments we examined the vertical displacement response of mud crab megalopae to illumination in estuarine and offshore water during the day and the night. Mud crab megalopae released into 1 m high towers swam higher when illuminated than when in darkness. This behaviour was repeated during the day and the night and in offshore and estuarine water. Given the apparent indifference to water type and the fact that mud crab megalopae are rarely caught in estuaries, we propose the model that these crabs do not invade estuaries as megalopae, but settle and metamorphose into small crabs on the coastal shelf before moving along the sea bed into estuarine habitats.  相似文献

广西北仑河口区新造高程约220 cm 的潮间带裸滩,移植白骨壤与茳芏、沟叶结缕草、芦苇和南水葱四种盐沼草进行混种,研究盐沼草-红树混种减轻污损动物对人工红树林危害的生物防治效果。结果表明:沟叶结缕草和茳芏可快速生长和扩展,缓流、促淤能力高于长势较差的南水葱和芦苇。在盐沼和白骨壤上发现19种污损动物,其中潮间藤壶、白条地藤壶、黑口滨螺和粗糙滨螺为优势种。茳芏和沟叶结缕草受污损程度较南水葱和芦苇轻。四种盐沼草受污损程度均低于白骨壤。白骨壤+茳芏、白骨壤+沟叶结缕草混种均可有效减轻污损动物对白骨壤苗木危害,这两类树-草混种处理区苗木的高度、叶数、枝数、枝下高和存活率等指标均较其他处理区好。初步判断“盐沼草-红树林协同生态修复体系”对于营造人工红树林有较高应用价值。  相似文献

We investigated the dispersal of larvae of benthic invertebratesand tested the hypothesis that larvae behaved as if they werepassive particles. Observations were made off Duck, North Carolina,USA during a period of wind driven downwelling at the coastand an intrusion of estuarine water from the Chesapeake Bay.The plume of estuarine water (salinity < 30 psu) was strongestat the shoreward stations in the more northern transects. Winddriven shoreward surface flow converged at the seaward edgeof the plume and downwelled. Offshore flow was present belowthe thermocline and caused the thermocline to bend downwardand contact the bottom at between 5 and 10 km offshore. In the zooplankton samples, we enumerated 33 taxa of larvae(17 taxa of bivalve veligers, 10 taxa of gastropod veligers,and 6 taxa of polychaete larvae). Using cluster analysis, larvaewere separated into groups with similar patterns of distribution.If larvae were acting as passive particles then we hypothesizedthat: 1) Their distribution should remain tied to a water massand 2) around a convergence or divergence, there should be nochange in larval concentration. The distributions of larvaein Clusters 1, 4, 5, and 6 were consistent with the hypothesisthat they were acting as passive particles. Larvae in Clusters2 and 3, however, did not appear to be acting as passive particles.Larvae in Cluster 2 did not remain tied to a water mass. Theyentered the study area in the estuarine plume waters, but within20 km they were nearly absent from the plume water and werefound seaward of the plume and at greater depth. Larvae in Cluster3 were most abundant in areas of converging currents where theshoreward flowing surface waters downwelled at the plume frontor against the shore. We hypothesized that larvae of organisms which as adults livein the intertidal or shallow subtidal zones would have morenearshore distributions than the larvae of adults that are broadlydistributed across the shelf. We compared the depth of the habitatof the adult bivalves from which the bivalve larvae in the differentclusters were derived. The results were consistent with thehypothesis; larvae with distributions closer to shore tendedto come from adults found at shallower depths or in the intertidalzone.  相似文献

Summary Cannibalism is likely to operate as a form of population control in dragonfly larvae. I performed aquarium experiments to investigate the effect of foraging activity and zooplankton availability on cannibalism in three dragonfly larvae. Large Cordulia aenea larvae showed low activity, and large Leucorrhinia dubia larvae showed high activity irrespective of zooplankton availability. In contrast, large Coenagrion hastulatum larvae changed from high activity in the absence to low activity in the presence of zooplankton. Small Cordulia aenea larvae were active in the absence of large conspecifics irrespective of zooplankton availability. In the presence of large conspecifics they showed a reduced activity when zooplankton were present. Small L. dubia larvae showed high activity and small Coenagrion hastulatum larvae low activity irrespective of pressence or absence of zooplankton and large conspecifics. In all three species cannibalism was highest in the absence of zooplankton. In the absence of zooplankton cannibalism was low in Coenagrion hastulatum compared to the other two species. On the contrary, in the presence of zooplankton, cannibalism did not differ between the three species.  相似文献

This paper describes variation in the population dynamics of the intertidal pulmonate gastropod solida among mangrove and saltmarsh habitats at Towra Point, NSW, Australia over a two-year period. In general, this paper describes the degree to which the density of the populations fluctuated and the size structure of the populations varied among heights on shore. The density of individuals in the upper mangrove forest was most variable through time and their population size structure was dominated by smaller individuals. The density of populations in the Sarcocornia high on the shore fluctuated least through time and were dominated by large individuals. Those populations found on the mid-shore in the Sarcocornia had population characteristics intermediate to those populations in the upper mangrove forest and the Sarcocornia high on the shore. Analysis of size frequency data indicated that the growth rates of individuals and their annual mortality decreased with increasing height on shore.  相似文献

Galaxias maculatus eggs and larvae obtained from broodfish captured either in an estuarine or a freshwater environment, as well as from cultured broodstock were analysed to compare their lipid and fatty acid profiles. Results showed a lower lipid content in embryos and larvae from estuarine populations than those from fresh water, denoting the influence of environmental conditions. The n-3:n-6 ratio was higher in eggs from estuarine and cultured populations, being in the range of marine fishes, whereas for eggs from freshwater fish was lower and typical of freshwater fishes. The polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), particularly docosahexaenoic acid (22:6n-3) and eicosapentaenoic acid (20:5n-3), were higher in eggs and larvae of broodstock coming from culture or estuarine environments than in those from fresh water. Moreover, these fatty acids markedly increased after hatching in larvae coming from estuarine populations, suggesting the effect of the environment on fatty acid profiles to physiologically prepare the larvae to adapt to higher salinity conditions. Linoleic acid (18:2n-6) content was higher in fresh water fish and its reduction during embryo and larval development was accompanied by a significant increase of arachidonic acid (20:4n-6), which was not observed in embryos or larvae from broodstock fish from estuary or aquaculture origin. Both environment and diet of broodstock fish affected lipid and fatty acid composition of G. maculatus embryo and larvae as well as their changes during development.  相似文献

The persistence of Dimilin® (diflubenzuron), an insect growth regulator which interferes with chitin formation in the cuticle of insect larvae, has been studied using larvae of the estuarine brachyuran crabRhithropanopeus harrisii (Gould) as test material. The results of the present investigation show that Dimilin breaks down relatively slowly in brackish water. It took about 8 weeks before a 10 ppb solution of Dimilin degraded to a level which did not affect survival of the crab larvae. Earlier it was shown (Christiansen et al., 1978) that nearly 100% ofR. harrisii larvae at each of the four zoeal stages died when molting to the succeeding stage after only 3 days of exposure to 10 ppb Dimilin. Hence, one should be extremely cautious in using Dimilin in estuarine areas where crab larvae occur.  相似文献

Fish assemblages utilising saltmarsh and mangrove during spring tides were surveyed over a 12-month period using buoyant pop nets. A total of 48 net releases in the saltmarsh identified 16 species, at a density of 0.56 fish m−2, with six species being of commercial importance. The same number of releases within the mangrove collected a total of 23 species at a density of 0.76 fish m−2. However, fish density was higher within the saltmarsh than the adjacent mangrove when corrected for water volume. Multidimensional scaling revealed different assemblages of fish in the two habitats, with higher numbers of Ambassis jacksoniensis and Pseudomugil sp. in the saltmarsh and higher numbers of Mugilogobius sp. and Acanthopagrus australis in the mangrove. The result suggests a potentially significant role for saltmarsh as a fish habitat in the estuaries of southeast Australia.  相似文献

The influence of the lunar cycle on the feeding habits, feeding success and selectivity was tested in situ on larval stages of the clingfish Gobiesox marmoratus (Gobiesocidae). Gobiesox marmoratus larvae and their prey were collected in the water column during the lunar cycle in austral spring 2015 and 2016, in shallow waters (<30 m depth) of El Quisco, central Chile. Feeding incidence was high (80–100%) throughout the moon cycle. The diet was composed of 32 prey items, being gastropod larvae and invertebrate eggs the most important. Prey composition varied among lunar phases with the lowest prey richness during new moon. During 2016, G. marmoratus larvae ingested the lowest number, but the largest prey during new moon. In spring 2015, there were no significant changes in the abundance of each prey taxon in the water column among moon phases, but in spring 2016 there were significant differences in the abundance of cypris and copepod nauplii, particularly between full and new moon. Feeding selectivity index showed that gastropod larvae were positively selected throughout the lunar cycle during spring 2015. In spring 2016, invertebrate eggs were selectively ingested in full moon and third quarter, but at a new moon G. marmoratus larvae selected gastropod larvae. Mean temperature of the water column and its vertical gradient and nocturnal cloud cover influences the feeding success of larval G. marmoratus. Lunar illumination favoured only an increase of richness of prey items. Therefore, nocturnal cloud cover precludes a greater influence of lunar illumination in the larval trophic ecology of this crypto-benthic fish.  相似文献

The major objective of this study was to investigate the behavioural responses of several zooplankton species to the presence of the scyphozoan jellyfish, Catostylus mosaicus. Specific aims included: identifying taxa that were not captured by C. mosaicus; investigating whether some of these taxa were able to detect and avoid water that had been exposed to C. mosaicus; and determining if positive phototaxis of crab megalopae was suppressed in the presence of C. mosaicus. Zooplankton not caught by C. mosaicus were identified by comparing the zooplankton present in the water column to those on the oral arms of the jellyfish. C. mosaicus mainly caught mollusc veligers and copepods, but did not catch crab megalopae, small prawns or post-flexion fish larvae. The hypothesis that these taxa were able to avoid swimming in water exposed to C. mosaicus was tested using water-choice experiments in a flume tank. A significant proportion (18-25%) of larval barramundi (Lates calcarifer) avoided swimming in the plume of water that had been exposed to C. mosaicus but mud crab (Scylla serrata) megalopae and juvenile prawns showed no response. The effect of C. mosaicus on the positive phototaxis of S. serrata megalopae was tested using 1 m tall glass towers. Megalopae were exposed to one of four treatments: filtered seawater (a control), an oral arm of C. mosaicus, an oral arm that had been sealed in plastic, and mucus from C. mosaicus. Megalopae migrated higher into the water column in the control than in treatments containing cues from the jellyfish. These findings suggest that blooms of jellyfish may induce behavioural changes in some zooplankton.  相似文献

Heavy mortality reaching almost 100% occurred in the larvae of the mangrove crab,Scylla serrata, from July to December 1997 at the hatchery of Gondol Research Station for Coastal Fisheries in Bali, Indonesia. Mortality was observed in larvae after hatching from the eggs. The affected larvae were whitish and filled with numerous aseptate hyphae. Three fungi belonging to the order Lagenidiales,Lagenidium callinectes, Haliphthoros milfordensis, andHalocrusticida sp., were isolated from the infected larvae. Pathogenicity tests of the infected fungi against the larvae of mangrove crab demonstrated that all isolates were pathogenic.  相似文献

Synopsis In this study we investigate the effect of food availability (zooplankton biomass) on the growth of Odontesthes bonariensis (Atherinidae) larvae. The larvae were stocked in four 45 m2 outdoor tanks at relatively high densities (100 and 200 larvae m–2). Because of the high stocking densities, the zooplankton biomass was depleted in all tanks. However, the patterns of food limitation, and particularly periods of severe food shortage, differed in tanks stocked at different densities. We could therefore, observe the effect of food limitation in larvae that differed in weight and age. The effects of variables suspected to influence O. bonariensis growth rates (age and weight of larvae, available zooplankton biomass, mean individual weight of available preys, total ingested prey weight, and mean weight of ingested preys) were investigated using standard multiple regression methods, and a model assuming: (1) an allometric relationship between maximum growth rates and weight of larvae, and (2) an inverse relationship between growth depression and the available zooplankton biomass. Both methods were consistent in showing that only the weight of larvae, and the availability of zooplankton prey had significant effects on the growth of O. bonariensis. The model's results additionally suggest that, if the observed growth rates are scaled by the maximum growth rate corresponding to the larva weight, the effect of zooplankton biomass is largely independent of age and weight of larvae.  相似文献

Estuarine crabs commonly display two larval dispersal patterns in which larvae are either exported from or retained within estuaries. The semiterrestrial fiddler crab Uca minax (LeConte, 1855) hatches on nocturnal spring high tides in the upper estuary and larvae are rapidly transported downstream. The mud crab Rhithropanopeus harrisii (Gould, 1841) hatches on nocturnal high tides of any amplitude and larvae are retained behaviorally in the upper estuary throughout development. If larvae are exported from the estuary to avoid environmental stress, then exported larvae should be less tolerant of high temperatures and low salinities than retained larvae. Larvae of these two species of estuarine crabs were hatched at 20‰ and 25 °C and subjected to salinities of 0, 5, 10,20, and 30‰, temperatures of 25 and 35 °C, and exposure times of 2, 6, 12, and 48 h. Larvae of both species reared at 30 or 20‰ survived well, while those reared in fresh water all died within 2 h regardless of temperature. Mud crab larvae reared at 5 and 10‰ survived better at the lower temperature (25 °C), higher salinity, and shorter exposure times. There was no significant effect of temperature or salinity on the survival of fiddler crab larvae, although survival decreased with increasing exposure time. Thus, the hypothesis that fiddler crab larvae are exported into stable coastal waters to reduce physiological stress is not supported. However, fiddler crab larvae may have evolved to be very tolerant of extreme temperature and salinity stress because they, unlike mud crabs, often release their larvae into shallow creeks. Most fiddler crab larvae are released on nocturnal spring high tides, which facilitates dispersal from tidal creeks. However, freshwater runoff and heat transferred from the marsh surface to flooding waters may still create stressful conditions for larvae soon after they are released. Larval release on spring high tides may facilitate dispersal from tidal creeks.  相似文献

The axiom that zooplankton species exhibit upwards migration behaviour at night is challenged by recent findings. Such behaviour is not universal, may vary during ontogeny, and is occasionally reversed. Moreover, in some estuarine and coastal zooplankton species vertical migration rhythms are of tidal, not diel, periodicity. There is evidence for several species that vertical migrations are endogenously controlled, occurring in constant conditions in the laboratory, suggesting that they have arisen under considerable selection pressure. They appear to play a significant role in orientation and navigation of coastal and estuarine zooplankton, predicated on the selective advantage of closure of life cycles. Vertical migrations between water masses moving in different directions at tidal, diel or longer timescales permit dispersal and recruitment, or retention, of planktonic larvae and adults in favourable ecological locations. Exogenous factors serving as cues for, or directly controlling, vertical migration rhythms include light, hydrostatic pressure, salinity, temperature, water movements and gravity responses, besides biological factors such as the timing of larval release, duration of larval life and predator/prey interactions. Behavioural characteristics should be quantified and factored into dispersal models which assume that zooplankton adults and larvae are advected as passive particles.  相似文献

There is now considerable evidence that, as the climate continues to warm, bushfires are becoming more common and severe, particularly in regions such as south-eastern Australia. The extraordinary Australian bushfires over the summer of 2019/2020 resulted in the burning of habitats such as highland peat swamps and intertidal estuarine wetlands over unprecedented spatial scales. Across New South Wales, these bushfires affected 183 ha of saltmarshes and 23 ha of mangroves in 19 estuaries. The percentage of fire-affected saltmarsh ranged from 51% to 81% in the worst impacted estuaries, although typically ≤15% of mapped saltmarsh was damaged. Just over 50% of mangroves were burnt in Wonboyn Lake (although this constituted <0.2 ha), whereas in all other estuaries, ≤5% of mangroves were burnt. At the state-wide scale, the likelihood of saltmarshes being affected by fire was unrelated to adjacent terrestrial vegetation; however, mangroves adjacent to burnt wet sclerophyll forest were more likely to burn than not. Burnt mangroves were almost exclusively associated with extreme or high severity fires in adjacent terrestrial vegetation, yet saltmarshes were also impacted in some cases by moderate or low-intensity fires. Many species of saltmarsh plants had re-sprouted or germinated after 6–24 months, but the extent of any recovery or changes in species composition were not quantified. The majority of fire-affected mangrove trees appeared to be dead 24 months after the fires, despite observations of epicormic growth on some trees after six months. Bushfire impacts to estuarine wetlands are likely to become more frequent and results from our work can help target hazard reduction burning that might be considered for minimising damage to mangroves. More work is required to better understand potential longer term impacts and the capacity for natural recovery of estuarine wetlands from bushfires.  相似文献

The iodine concentration in wild zooplankton was 700 times higher than in Artemia and threefold higher in Atlantic halibut Hippoglossus hippoglossus larvae fed wild zooplankton than in those fed Artemia . In larvae fed wild zooplankton thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) concentrations were significantly higher than in those fed Artemia at the commencement of metamorphosis, 68–77 days post hatching. There was no difference in the amino acids phenylalanine and tyrosine levels in larvae fed Artemia in comparison with those fed wild zooplankton. The selenium level was significantly higher in larvae fed Artemia than in those fed wild zooplankton, but concentrations in the prey were not different. The results indicate sufficient amounts of phenylalanine, tyrosine and selenium in Artemia , but indicated a lower thyroid status due to an insufficient iodine supply at commencement of metamorphosis in larvae fed Artemia . This may partly explain the higher frequency of juveniles with complete eye migration and asymmetric pigmentation in the group fed wild zooplankton.  相似文献

The shore crab, Carcinus maenas L. (Portunidae), is a coastal and estuarine species, which can live and reproduce under brackish water conditions; freshly hatched larvae have been observed in the field at salinities below 15‰. In the present laboratory study, the tolerance of hypo-osmotic stress was experimentally investigated in early larvae of a marine (North Sea) population of C. maenas reared at four different salinities (15, 20, 25, 32‰). Two and 4 days after hatching, the Zoea I larvae were moult-staged microscopically, and their rates of respiration and growth (changes in dry weight, W, carbon, C, nitrogen, N, and hydrogen, H) were measured. Survival and development were monitored until the megalopa was reached: 15‰ did not allow for development beyond the first zoeal stage, while metamorphosis to the megalopa was reached at salinities ≥20‰. At 20‰, development was significantly delayed and mortality enhanced as compared with 25 and 32‰. Rates of growth and respiration decreased during exposure to reduced salinities ≤25‰. Hence, the suppression of growth could not be explained as a consequence of enhanced metabolic losses per larva. Instead, a partial C budget indicates that the Zoea I larvae suffered from decreased capabilities of assimilating ingested and subsequently converting assimilated matter to tissue growth. Net growth efficiency (K2, C-based) was at 25 and 32‰ initially high (>60% during the postmoult and intermoult stages of the Zoea I moult cycle), but decreased during the later stages (down to ≤30% in premoult). An inverse pattern of C partitioning was observed at ≤20‰, with initially low K2 values (≤21% during the first 2 days of the moult cycle), and a later increase (up to ≥46% in premoult). Thus, larval growth was initially suppressed under conditions of reduced salinity, but this was later (during premoult) partially compensated for by an increase in C assimilation and K2. Our observations indicate that Zoea I shore crab larvae react during the late stages of their moulting cycle less sensitively against reduced salinities than during postmoult and intermoult. This suggests that the transition between moult cycle stages C and D0 may be a critical point for effects of hypo-osmotic stress, similarly as already known in relation to effects of nutritional stress. Negative effects were found also when freshly hatched Zoea I shore crab larvae were exposed only transitorily (for 24–72 h) to 20‰, with significantly lower rates of survival, development, growth, respiration, and K2. These effects increased with increasing duration of initial exposure to reduced salinity.  相似文献

Pollen assemblages closely reflect the local vegetation that characterizes the salinity status, providing useful analogs for paleoecologxical reconstruction in regional deposits. Palynological evidences of surface sediments from the Coringa mangrove wetland were correlated with the physicochemical and sediment salinity records to observe the relationship between them. The statistical analysis of the data obtained here revealed a marked horizontal salinity gradient from north to south.. In this study, ordination (detrended correspondence analysis) of palynomorph groups has identified a salinity gradient of 1.1 to 3.0 PSU from the north to the south in the wetland. High palynomorph deposition and lower salinity are observed along channel margins due to the mixing of estuarine water during the rainy season. The mudflats along the transects show a lower diversity of plants in the pollen record and high total dissolved solids (TDS) than commonly found in the coastal wetlands. The presence of scrubby halophytic vegetation in the upper saltmarsh and oligohaline-freshwater vegetation in the low tidal saline marshes is a zonation pattern related to the localized influence of freshwater conditions. Palynomarine Index (PMI) reveals the highest freshwater/tidal inundation along Ramannapalem due to the presence of numerous riverine channels while the remaining part of the wetland has restricted tidal inundation leading to the conversion of mangrove forests to salt pans and paddy fields. Thus, the health and productivity of the mangrove ecosystem are also governed by hydrodynamics, catchment land use, water discharge in the channels, and tidal flushing.
