Phenetic structure of a sample of large African barbs Barbus intermedius complex) taken in November 2010 from the inshore part of the Bahar Dar Gulf (Lake Tana) was studied. Principal components analysis was performed on 28 indices characterizing skull proportions and shape of bones. The individuals under study formed distinct clusters in the principal component space. Composition of these clusters was considered. Many morphotypes described in the 1990s were absent in the sample taken in 2010, and there were individuals which did not comply with the diagnoses of the previously described morphotypes. It was suggested that some of these fish represented phenetic groups which did not occur in the offshore part of the gulf, some were, most probably, hybrids of the known morphotypes or originated from homonomic crossings but did not had diagnostic characters of the parental morphotype.  相似文献

29 quantitative and 18 qualitative skull characters were studied in the African large barbs (Barbus intermedius complex) from Lake Tana (Ethiopia). Based on results of principle components analysis phenetic relationships of 12 morphotypes were assessed. External features diagnostic of the morphotypes were found in individuals substantially different in the skull characters. The obtained data along with the data on morphological diversity of large barbs from Ethiopia beyond the Lake Tana basin suggest origination of the Lake Tana complex of forms from a complex of forms that existed in the upper reaches of the Blue Nile before the lake came into being, and the extant morphotypes of the Lake Tana barbs originated from three or four forms that composed the ancestral riverine local complex.  相似文献

After performing principal component analysis (PCA) of 13 characters (indices) of skulls of large African barbs (Barbus intermedius complex sensu Banister, 1973) from Lakes Awasa and Langano (Ethiopia) distributions of individuals in coordinates BL and PC1 were studied where BL is the basal skull length and PC1 is the first principal component. It is shown that in both the lakes there are groups of barbs whose individual ontogenetic trajectories are situated within separated ontogenetic channels. Separation of the channels is by far less distinct than that of the channels of generalized and specialized forms of barbs from Lake Tana and not correlated with differences in external traits. It is suggested that the revealed polymorphism is connected with food resource partitioning and might serve as a prerequisite of further divergence of sympatric forms of large African barbs.  相似文献

Direct observations on three forms (morph types) of spawning barbs, considered by some authors as different species, were carried out in September–October 2005 at the Gumara River and its small tributary, the Ducalit, in the Lake Tana basin. The spawning barbs were sampled using cast nets. Barbs of different morphotypes composed common spawning aggregations and were caught together. It is likely that troutlike females mate extensively with intermedius males and, probably, with bigmouth small-eye males. Experiments in artificial fertilization and rearing showed that, during the embryonic period, there was no increase in mortality of progeny from crosses of barbs of different morphotypes, in comparison with homonomic crosses, thus suggesting an absence of postzygotic reproductive isolation between the morphotypes. At the same time, mortality of progeny from crossing barbs with Varicorhinus beso Rüppell, 1836 was very high during the earliest stages of development, suggesting strong, even if incomplete, reproductive isolation ensured by postzygotic mechanisms. Changes of external morphological characters in three forms (morphotypes) of African barbs from Lake Tana (Ethiopia) belonging to Barbus intermedius complex were traced using electronic tags. It was shown that within age interval from two to four years individual ontogenetic allometric curves often cannot be described with a single power function equation. Individual ontogenetic trajectories in the principal components space within this interval strongly differ in shape meandering within ontogenetic channels outlined on the basis of cross-sectional data. Morphological differences between siblings are found that do not allow to classify some of them with the morphotype of their parents.  相似文献

Genetic divergence among morphotypes of Lake Tana (Ethiopia) barbs   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The genus Barbus is a paraphyletic assemblage that includes three different ploidy levels: diploid, tetraploid and hexaploid. 'B.' intermedins , which inhabits Lake Tana (Ethiopia), is a hexaploid taxon that forms a 'species flock' consisting of at least 14 morphotypes. Thirty-one presumptive allozymic loci were analysed in a large sample of 'B.' intermedius. No diagnostic loci were observed between the morphotypes, but substantial differences in allele frequencies were found. One morphotype, Acute, differs significantly from the others. The presence of this genetic differentiation within the lake strongly suggests that the morphotypes are diverging lineages. Because of some parallel characteristics with cichlid species flocks, we put forward the hypothesis that the morphotypes of barbs in Lake Tana represent a species flock that originated via sympatric speciation with more rapid morphological than molecular differentiation. If the differentiation and the reproductive isolation are real, it is probable that the morphotypes already are or will soon reach the status of species.  相似文献

Lake Tana large barbs: phenetics, growth and diversification   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Among the Lake Tana large barbs of about 10 cm SL only representatives of the' acute'morphotype can be distinguished, in the size range 10–20 cm SL' bigmouth big eye' can be identified also. As for the rest, very few individuals can be confidently affiliated with a particular morphotype most of them looking like' intermedius'. Even within the range of 20–30 cm SL some individuals are still difficult to identify. Principal component analysis of cranial characters revealed discrete groups of morphotypes. Differences in both external and cranial characters of the morphotypes result from divergence which is most pronounced when fish are 4–5 years old and 20–25 cm SL. This divergence cannot be related exclusively with differences in the growth rates of individuals representing different morphotypes. Differences in food composition between the morphotypes probably increase in parallel with their morphological divergence. Differences between the morphotypes in the lateral line (11) and the gill rakers (Sb) counts were revealed using ANOVA. Comparison of the Lake Tana Barbus complex of forms with that previously known from Lake Lanao (Philippines) suggests that in both lakes the different forms arose sympatrically but that sympatric speciation in Lake Lanao has advanced further than in Lake Tana.  相似文献

Skull proportions of Barbus canis individuals drastically change during their life. Yearlings have skull proportions characteristic for barbs of the NEC phenetic group (sensu Mina et al. 2001 Environ. Biol. Fish. 61: 242–252), but with age become similar to those of the Lake Tana large-mouthed morphotypes which acquire their specific features at 3–7 years old while at earlier ages they have skull proportions of a NEC form identified as 'intermedius' sensu Nagelkerke et al. (1994 Environ. Biol. Fish. 39: 1–21). The large-mouthed Lake Tana barbs originated from an ancestral NEC form through peramorphosis, but in relation to B. canis they are paedomorphic in skull proportions. B. canis supposedly originated from a NEC form as a consequence of an adaptive radiation that took place in western Asia.  相似文献

The heritability estimates of 25 external morphometric characters and 23 craniometric indices are obtained by use of variances in monoclonal all-female triploids and bisexual tetraploids of spined loaches (genus Cobitis, Cobitidae) collected from the same breeding biotope. Most of studied traits demonstrate low heritability confirming previous conclusion on the similarity between external morphometric characters and craniological indices in relative effects of genetic and environmental components in their total phenotypic variation. Low heritability estimates in most of external morphological traits correspond to their low diagnostic value in Cobitis species. As a whole, in spite of certain deviations, studies on clonal forms do not refute the concept on higher heritability estimates in diagnostically significant traits in comparison with traits without diagnostic values in the same taxonomic group. Low heritability in most morphometric traits more probably is resulted from their low additive genetic variation caused by strong selection of evolutionary developed specific body shape in spined loaches, because strong selection should reduce the genetic variance in body proportions to minimal size. Sex differences observed in heritability estimates should be interpreted as a result of linkage of several additive genes controlling these traits to sex chromosomes. A few characters demonstrating high heritability estimates up to 0.492–0.580 are of great interest for taxonomic and phylogenetic studies in genus Cobitis and related taxa.  相似文献

Frequency distributions of dental morphotype characters (groups of morphotypes from A to S) in 43 red fox Vulpes vulpes (Linnaeus, 1758) populations from the Holarctic region were analysed. Definite but different geographical gradients in morphotype dental patterns were found both in the Palearctic and Nearctic. In the Nearctic, a great number of characters present geographical gradient related to longitude whereas, in the Palearctic, gradient relates to latitude. Mean annual temperature and mean annual sum of precipitations play a significant role in shaping the geographical variation of morphotype characters. The shape of the teeth in the centre of the morphogenetic field is more heavily geo-climatically conditioned than the morphotype characters in the teeth at the ends of the cheek teeth field. There was an attempt to reconstruct the evolutionary changes in the morphotype dental pattern in the V. vulpes line. The morphotype pattern in the red fox dentition partially follows the phylogeographical evolutionary trends in Canidae in the northern hemisphere. However, the picture of morphotype variation is influenced by both earlier episodes of human interference (reintroductions of foxes in North America) and the recent phenomenon of heavy opportunism of the species.  © 2007 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2007, 90 , 61–84.  相似文献

Subtle differences of external traits characterize species of rodents in the Neotropical genus Graomys. On the other hand, the species differ markedly in chromosome number. In the present study, we evaluate the possible evolutionary forces involved in the evolution of the genus by assessing the degree of intra‐ and interspecific genetic and morphological variation. A phylogenetic analysis demonstrates the existence of at least three species with high levels of genetic distance (10%), which diverged between 1 and 1.5 Mya. Neither Graomys griseoflavus, nor Graomys chacoensis present marked phylogeographical structure. Regarding morphological characters, these species show shape differences in the skull that could be attributable to differences in the local conditions they inhabit, being more marked in G. griseoflavus than in G. chacoensis. The skull shape of G. chacoensis could have evolved under genetic drift, whereas evidence reported in the present study indicates that this character could be under selective pressures in G. griseoflavus. Reconstruction of the ancestral area suggests that G. griseoflavus originated in the central Monte desert, whereas G. chacoensis originated in the Chaco ecoregion surrounding the austral extreme of the Yungas rainforest. Subsequently, both species would have undergone demographic and geographical expansions almost simultaneously, starting approximately 150 000–175 000 years ago. The complex evolutionary history of the genus could be partly explained by the decoupling of morphological, karyological and molecular traits.  相似文献

It has long been unclear whether the different derived cranial traits of modern humans evolved independently in response to separate selection pressures or whether they resulted from the inherent morphological integration throughout the skull. In a novel approach to this issue, we combine evolutionary quantitative genetics and geometric morphometrics to analyze genetic and phenotypic integration in human skull shape. We measured human skulls in the ossuary of Hallstatt (Austria), which offer a unique opportunity because they are associated with genealogical data. Our results indicate pronounced covariation of traits throughout the skull. Separate simulations of selection for localized shape changes corresponding to some of the principal derived characters of modern human skulls produced outcomes that were similar to each other and involved a joint response in all of these traits. The data for both genetic and phenotypic shape variation were not consistent with the hypothesis that the face, cranial base, and cranial vault are completely independent modules but relatively strongly integrated structures. These results indicate pervasive integration in the human skull and suggest a reinterpretation of the selective scenario for human evolution where the origin of any one of the derived characters may have facilitated the evolution of the others.  相似文献

The cranial morphology of the extinct murid genus Stephanomys, previously known only by dental remains, is described here on the basis of partial skulls of three species of Pliocene age. Important cranial characters of the genus are a robust rostrum, a high zygoma, a wide zygomatic arch, a narrow interorbit, a large orbit, and an optic foramen in the backward position. In addition to some dental characters, Stephanomys shares most of these cranial traits with the extinct Malpaisomys from the Canary Islands. Some of these traits may be linked to the development of large eyes and life in a rocky environment. The peculiar dental pattern of Stephanomys (stephanodonty) is also present in some recent murids (Oenomys and Thamnomys) having a different skull morphology. A comparison with nine other extant genera of murids verified the relationship among Malpaisomys, Stephanomys, and Acomys, supporting our previous conclusion. Phenetic and cladistic analyses of 17 cranial and 23 dental characters show that skull morphology is phylogenetically informative but highly convergent and incongruent with other partial evidence based on dental and biochemical characters. The combined analyses of skull and teeth illustrate a case of mosaic evolution in murids.  相似文献

Using a new approach to study muscle anatomy in vertebrates, the fully differentiated jaw musculature of 42 turtle species was studied and character mappings were performed. Soft tissue arrangements were correlated to the temporal openings (emarginations) of the skull and the trochlearis system of the jaw apparatus among turtle taxa. When compared to the cranial anatomy of stem Testudines, most characters detected as diagnostic of particular extant groups have to be considered as being evolved first within Testudines. Hence, jaw muscle anatomy of extant turtles is difficult to compare to that of other reptilian taxa. Moreover, the high number of apomorphic character changes speaks for a divergating turtle and saurian morphotype of jaw musculature, which could indicate either a position of turtles outside of Sauria or a highly derived, undetectable origin within that group. In general, a low direct correlation of most soft and hard tissue characters was detected. This finding could imply that both character complexes are more integrated to each other driven by functional morphology; i.e., the composition of muscle fibre types. That condition highlights the difficulty in using gross anatomy of jaw muscle characters to interpret temporal bone arrangements among amniotes in general.  相似文献

Morphometric characters (linear measurements) of the skull and mandible of the rodent Proechimys occurring in Venezuela and Columbia were investigated through multivariate techniques in order to describe static allometry and to relate allometric patterns to the recent evolution of these taxa. At least five species originated during the recent Pleistocene period in the upper Orinoco basin, all characterized by different karyotypes, one of them (P. guairae) being a Rassenkreis of karyomorphs. Species are characterized by unique static allometric patterns and the study of these patterns suggests a phylogenetic rather than an ecogenetic origin for these patterns; modifications in the shape of the skull and the mandible have originated during phyletic speciation and there is no apparent sign of functional adaptation.  相似文献

Morphological differences among three color morphotypes occurring almost sympatrically (A, reddish type; B, blackish type; C, brownish type) of Sebastes inermis are clarified. Twenty-six morphometric characters and seven meristic characters were examined on about 20 specimens of each morphotype, 15 of the morphometric characters differing significantly. Principal component analysis (PCA) of the morphometric characters showed morphotype C to differ from the other two morphotypes. Canonical discriminant analysis (CDA) of the morphometric characters showed clear separation of each morphotype. Four meristic characters also differed significantly. Modes of pectoral fin ray counts of morphotypes A, B, and C were 15, 16, and 17, respectively, and the modes of anal fin ray counts of morphotypes B and C were 7 and 8, respectively. Many individuals of morphotype A had seven or eight anal fin rays. These differences suggested that the three morphotypes may be reproductively isolated from each other. The Hanuman langur is one of the most widely distributed and morphologically variable non-human primates in South Asia. Even though it has been extensively studied, the taxonomic status of this species remains unresolved due to incongruence between various classification schemes. This incongruence, we believe, is largely due to the use of plastic morphological characters such as coat color in classification. Additionally these classification schemes were largely based on reanalysis of the same set of museum specimens. To bring greater resolution in Hanuman langur taxonomy we undertook a field survey to study variation in external morphological characters among Hanuman langurs. The primary objective of this study is to ascertain the number of morphologically recognizable units (morphotypes) of Hanuman langur in peninsular India and to compare our field observations with published classification schemes. We typed five color-independent characters for multiple adults from various populations in South India. We used the presence-absence matrix of these characters to derive the pair-wise distance between individuals and used this to construct a neighbor-joining (NJ) tree. The resulting NJ tree retrieved six distinct clusters, which we assigned to different morphotypes. These morphotypes can be identified in the field by using a combination of five diagnostic characters. We determined the approximate distributions of these morphotypes by plotting the sampling locations of each morphotype on a map using GIS software. Our field observations are largely concordant with some of the earliest classification schemes, but are incongruent with recent classification schemes. Based on these results we recommend Hill (Ceylon Journal of Science, Colombo 21:277-305, 1939) and Pocock (Primates and carnivora (in part) (pp. 97–163). London: Taylor and Francis, 1939) classification schemes for future studies on Hanuman langurs.  相似文献

From May 2005-2006, selections of river crossing locations and sleeping sites used by a one-male group (BE-Group) of proboscis monkeys (Nasalis larvatus) were investigated along the Menanggul River, tributary of the Kinabatangan River, Sabah, Malaysia. The frequency of river crossings for focal monkeys in the BE-Group was significantly higher at locations with narrow branch-to-bank distances. Branch-to-bank distances were defined as the distances between the longest tree branches extending over the river and the bank of river on each side. This was measured in areas crossed by the monkeys. The focal monkeys used locations with a higher probability of successful river crossings that did not require jumping into the water and swimming across than those that did. The frequency of sleeping site usage by the BE-Group was positively correlated with the frequency of using river crossing locations by the focal monkeys. Previous reports on predation of proboscis monkeys indicate that clouded leopards (Neofelis diardi) and crocodilians (Tomistoma schlegeli and Crocodylus porosus) may be the major terrestrial and aquatic predators of these monkeys. The selection of river crossing locations by proboscis monkeys may be influenced both by the threat of these predators and the location of suitable and protected sleeping sites. Finally, sleeping sites locations that offer arboreal escape routes may protect proboscis monkeys from leopard attack.  相似文献

Results are described of experimental crossing for obtaining of triple hybrids of the Russian sturgeon Acipenser gueldenstaedtii, the great sturgeon A. huso, and the starred sturgeon A. stellatus and of comparative analysis of some quantitative morphological characters in these hybrids, in the progeny of parental species and of reciprocal hybrids of starred sturgeon and great sturgeon. By most investigated characters, in triple hybrids, the states of the paternal species (Russian sturgeon) are inherited, by some other characters-of great sturgeon-the state of starred sturgeon is not inherited. Therefore, on the basis of external appearance, they may be identified as the hybrid of Russian sturgeon with great sturgeon. The observed segregation by the form of gill rakers into paternal, maternal, or intermediate variants leads to a conclusion of nonmonogenous inheritance of a wide form and a conical form of gill rakers in sturgeons. On the whole, the obtained results clearly demonstrate how, due to effects of matrocliny and partocliny, and different combination of dominant and recessive alleles of the genes determining the diagnostic characters, the hybrid individuals may acquire a different extent of similarity and differences from the parental species. The investigated triple hybrids are an interesting example of mutual leveling of divergent traits in the course of combination of different genomes within limits of one closely related Atlantic group of sturgeons. As a result, a certain averaged habitus is formed which might take place also in case of formation of polyploidy species in the process of evolution.  相似文献
