Size restoration by the auxospore that develops from the zygote is a crucial stage in diatom life cycles. However, information on sexual events in pelagic diatom species is very limited. We report for the first time auxospore formation by the pennate diatom Fragilariopsis kerguelensis (O'Hara) Hustedt during an iron‐induced bloom in the Southern Ocean (EIFEX, European Iron Fertilization EXperiment). Auxospores of F. kerguelensis resembled those described for Pseudo‐nitzschia species. The auxospore was characterized by an outer coating, the perizonium; two caps, one at each distal end; and four chloroplasts, one at each end and two in the central part. Different stages of auxospore elongation were recorded, with a length of 24–91 μm, but only the largest auxospores contained the initial cell, whose apical axis ranged between 76 and 90 μm. Gametangial cell walls were often attached to the auxospores and ranged from 10 to 31 μm in length. Auxospore abundances were consistently higher in the fertilized patch, where an increase in the F. kerguelensis population was observed, as compared with surrounding waters.  相似文献

The surface distribution of netphytoplankton (>20 m) in the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean was investigated along two transects during early and late austral summer 1990/91. Sampling was under-taken at intervals of 60 of latitude between 34° and 70°S for the analysis of nutrients and for the identification and enumeration of netphytoplankton. Peaks in total diatom abundances were recorded at the Antarctic Polar Front (APF), in the vicinity of the South Sand wich Islands, in the marginal ice zone and in the neritic waters of the Atlantic sector of Antarctica. Cluster analysis indicates the existence of two major zones between Southern Africa and Antarctica. Diatom abundance increased south of the Antarctic Polar From along both transects, which can be partially explained by gradients of silicate concentration. Small chain-forming species (e.g. Fragilariopsis kerguelensis and Nitzschia lineata) dominated the diatom assemblages in early summer, while larger species, such as Rhizosolenia hebetata f. semispina and Corethron criophilum, dominated late summer diatom assemblages. The predominance of typically ice-associated forms in early summer suggests that the release of epontic cells during ice melt provides the initial inoculum for the netphytoplankton biomass. These small diatoms are subsequently replaced by larger species.  相似文献

Sea ice seasonality during the Holocene, Adélie Land, East Antarctica   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Thin sections of laminated cores from different Antarctic coastal areas have demonstrated the potential of diatom species to document climate change at the seasonal scale. Here we present the relative abundances of four diatom species and species groups (Fragilariopsis curta group as a proxy for yearly sea ice cover, F. kerguelensis as a proxy for summer sea-surface temperature, Chaetoceros Hyalochaete resting spores as a proxy for spring sea ice melting and the Thalassiosira antarctica group as a proxy for autumn sea ice formation) in core MD03-2601 retrieved off Adélie Land on the Antarctic continental shelf. These abundances were compared to surface temperatures and sea ice cover modelled over the last 9000 years. Both the marine records and the simulated climate demonstrated a cooler Early Holocene (9000–7700 years BP), a warmer Mid-Holocene (7700–4000 years BP) and a colder Late Holocene (4000–1000 years BP). Yearly sea ice cover followed an inverse pattern to temperatures with less sea ice during the Mid-Holocene Hypsithermal than during the Late Holocene Neoglacial. However, diatom census counts and model output indicate that sea ice spring melting happened earlier in the season, as expected, but that autumn sea ice formation also occurred earlier in the season during the Hypsithermal than during the colder Neoglacial, thereby following seasonal changes in local insolation.  相似文献

Diatom floras from springs have received little attention until recently, despite the fact that springs provide specific conditions that cannot be found in any other aquatic system, and remain of great importance in terms of general environmental changes. Due to pollution of the Kraków-Częstochowska upland aquifers, the chemical composition of spring waters in the area is anthropogenically modified, and far from the natural state. In order to generate a baseline diatom flora for springs, a paleolimnological study was applied as one of the best recognized and applied methods used to track long-term environmental changes worldwide. Little is known, however, about the direction and nature of such changes in aquatic environments fed by springs. The present article focuses on shifts in diatom assemblages preserved in sediments collected from a small pond, situated close to several spring outlets. They were interpreted as a record of environmental changes that had taken place during the last century. For most of the history of the pond—as recorded in this 84 cm long core—the diatom assemblage was dominated by small Fragilaria spp. The major shifts in species composition began in a core depth of 65 cm with a decline in Fragilaria construens var. venter (Ehrenberg) Grunow and Fragilaria pinnata Ehrenberg complexes, and a concurrent increase in Achnanthidium minutissimum (Kützing) Czarnecki. The second change was recorded at the depth of 45 cm with a sharp decline of A. minutissimum, which again was replaced by the small Fragilaria spp. In recent years, further changes in the diatom assemblage occurred, with a notable increase in Cyclotella delicatula Hustedt. The assemblage shifts recorded at this site appear to be consistent with environmental changes triggered by land use (e.g. agriculture intensity) and/or possible changes in spring water discharge. Tropical alpine areas may be highly sensitive to climate change. Yet, because high-resolution palaeoenvironmental studies in these regions are scant, patterns of environmental change over the last few centuries, and linkages with regional changes, remain poorly resolved. This article presents a 400-year palaeolimnological record from Lower Kitandara Lake (3,989 m above m.a.s.l.), located in the Rwenzori Mountains of Uganda, where marked glacial recession has been recorded over much of the twentieth century. An age model is produced for a 57.5 cm sediment core based on 210Pb and 14C dating, suggesting a basal date of approximately 1600 AD. Diatom and organic geochemistry (%TOC, C/N ratios, δ13C) analyses are carried out at an approximately decadal resolution. Twentieth-century glacial recession does not appear to have significantly impacted either the diatom or geochemical records. However, large ecological changes have occurred during the past 400 years, particularly shown by the diatom fluxes and geochemical data. Throughout the core, the diatom record reveals only minor changes in assemblage composition, which may be related to the dominance of Staurosira construens var. venter in the lake’s diatom flora, a tychoplanktonic taxon which is highly adaptive to environmental change. Geochemical analyses, however, reveal a marked change at around the end of the eighteenth century, when C/N ratios suggest an increase in the dominance of algal aquatic sources to lacustrine organic matter, concomitant with a stabilisation of catchment inputs and increased diatom productivity, which may have been caused by reduced glacial inputs. The relationship between these changes at Lower Kitandara Lake and wider regional climate change that occurred at the end of the eighteenth century is not well understood, but this study highlights the need for additional research to link drivers of alpine ecosystem change with those operating at low altitudes.  相似文献

The hydrology of shallow lakes (and ponds) located in the western Hudson Bay Lowlands (HBL) is sensitive to climate warming and associated permafrost thaw. However, their biological characteristics are poorly known, which hampers effective aquatic ecosystem monitoring. Located in northern Manitoba along the southwestern coast of Hudson Bay, Wapusk National Park (WNP) encompasses numerous shallow lakes representative of the subarctic zone. We analyzed the distribution and diversity of diatom (microscopic algae; class Bacillariophyceae) assemblages in surficial sediments of 33 lakes located in three different ecozones spanning a vegetation gradient, from NE to SW: the Coastal Fen (CF), the Interior Peat Plateau (IPP), and the Boreal Spruce Forest (BSF). We found significant differences (P < 0.05) in diatom community composition between CF and IPP lakes, and CF and BSF lakes, but not between IPP and BSF lakes. These results are consistent with water chemistry measurements, which indicated distinct limnological conditions for CF lakes. Diatom communities in CF lakes were generally dominated by alkaliphilous taxa typical of waters with medium to high conductivity, such as Nitzschia denticula. In contrast, several IPP and BSF lakes were dominated by acidophilous and circumneutral diatom taxa with preference for low conductivity (e.g., Tabellaria flocculosa, Eunotia mucophila, E. necompacta var. vixcompacta). This exploratory survey provides a first detailed inventory of the diatom assemblages in the WNP region needed for monitoring programs to detect changes in shallow lake ecosystems and ecozonal shifts in response to climate variations.  相似文献

The effects of urban pollution from Hanoi city on the benthic diatom communities of the Nhue–Tolich river system were studied during the 2003 dry season. Benthic diatoms were allowed to grow on glass slides suspended in the water flow for 4 weeks. To reveal the relationship between water quality and diatom communities, Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) was used on data concerning relative abundances of diatom species and environmental variables. Two diatom indices, IPS and DAIpo, were applied to evaluate water quality in the three rivers. A total of 291 diatom taxa were found in the Red, Nhue and Tolich Rivers. These were mainly cosmopolitan taxa, with some tropical, subtropical and endemic taxa. The most abundant taxa at the Red site were Aulacoseira granulata, Achnanthidium minutissimum, Encyonema minutum, Navicula recens and other halophilous taxa such as Nitzschia kurzii, Seminavis strigosa, Entomoneis paludosa, Bacillaria paradoxa. Diatom assemblages at the Tolich site consisted mainly of Nitzschia umbonata, Nitzschia palea and Eolimna minima. Diatom density ranged from 660 to 30,000 cells/cm2. Environmental variables and diatom assemblage composition at all sites were significantly correlated. Two diatom indices gave similar results and indicate the Tolich River with the lowest values as a highly polluted site.  相似文献

Eutrophication of the Baltic Sea has become a serious concern in recent decades. To provide a potential means for quality assessments of coastal waters in this area, we collected a data set of 49 embayments in the Gulf of Finland, and explored the relationship between surface sediment diatom assemblages and 15 environmental variables, with special emphasis on nutrients. Total dissolved nitrogen, total phosphorus, depth, and salinity all accounted for significant and independent fractions of variation in the diatom data and explained 34% of the total variation. There were clear changes in diatom assemblage structures along the nutrient gradients. Although these changes were gradual, we could identify a number of taxa that were more abundant in a particular nutrient environment. These taxa could be used as potential indicators of the quality of coastal waters in the Baltic Sea. Diatom assemblages that were least affected by nutrient enrichment included a variety of benthic species and a relatively high species richness. Small planktonic taxa such as Cyclotella atomus Hustedt, Cyclotella meneghiniana Kützing and Thalassiosira pseudonana Hasle and Heimdal were good indicators of highly elevated nutrient concentrations (>600 lg·L?1 total dissolved nitrogen and 60 lg·L?1 total phosphorus) together with low species richness. The first appearance of these small planktonic taxa in regular monitoring could be used as an early warning sign for deteriorating water quality. Diatoms could be applied to water quality classification and monitoring purposes in the coastal waters of the Baltic Sea area using techniques such as weighted‐averaging regression and calibration.  相似文献

Nitzschia sublinearis Hustedt and N. pura Hustedt are common oligosaprobic freshwater diatom species that frequently occur in diatom inventories, thus being important in water quality studies. Both are considered as species with overlapping diagnostic criteria in several floras, which is typical of the whole genus Nitzschia. The type material of Hustedt of N. sublinearis and N. pura was examined using LM and EM in order to document the range of variation within the type populations and to compare it with populations occurring in different European rivers. Detailed observations allowed recognition of two new freshwater diatom species: N. alicae sp. nov., occurring in mesotrophic up to eutrophic conditions, and N. puriformis sp. nov., mostly occurring in oligotrophic habitats, both in rivers and streams at middle and high altitudes. The most reliable taxonomic features that separate both new species from the most similar taxa are the density of fibulae and striae, valve shape, and valve width as well as the shape of areolae. Morphological examination of different populations indicates that N. puriformis is relatively common in European rivers and has been overlooked to date and confounded with N. pura by several researchers. By contrast, N. alicae has, to date, been collected only in Slovakia and Northern Italy, but with a high frequency of occurrence and sometimes in high abundance at sites.  相似文献

The ultra‐structure of the frustule of the rarely recorded diatom Fragilaria obtusa Hustedt was studied in detail using sand samples from Laranjal Bay (Lagoa dos Patos Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil). F. obtusa is transferred to the genus Staurosira Ehrenberg as Staurosira obtusa (Hustedt) Garcia. The taxon is characterized by striae composed of elliptical areolae that are occluded by an internal velum, apical pore field formed by several rows of rimmed pores, girdle bands free of ornamentation, wide valvocopulae, and absence of rimoportulae. This is the first record of S. obtusa from an epipsammic habitat.  相似文献

The diatom Auliscus pruinosus Bailey was abundant in marine fossil material collected from coastal environments of Florida and Mississippi. Examination of Slide 1786 from the Bailey Collection of the Farlow Herbarium confirmed the present author's initial identification and this slide has been designated as the lectotype. Scanning electron microscopic observations revealed the fine structure of the two large ocelli and the enigmatic “frosted” striae. Neither labiate nor strutted processes are present. The epicingulum consists of three open bands—the valvocopula and two ligulate pleurae. Studies of original material led to the conclusion that A. punctatus Bailey and A. moronensis Greville should not be separated from A. pruinosus. The exact distribution of A. pruinosus is unknown since it has been confused with A. similis Hustedt in the past. However, it has been principally collected from Recent and fossil marine localities along the southeastern Atlantic and Gulf Coasts of the USA.  相似文献

Benthic diatoms are widely used in Europe to assess ecological status of running waters. The aim of this study was to develop models to predict average pH and total phosphorus (TP) for European stream monitoring using combined diatom data-sets from Hungary and Sweden. As first step, the relationship between the measured environmental variables and the distribution of the taxa was checked by classification by using cluster-analysis and CCA. Diatom data separated clearly along the main hydrogeochemical parameters (e.g. alkalinity, pH). Concerning nutrients, TP was the most determinant factor. Predictive value of the TP model (r = 0.96) is high only for the Hungarian data and the pH model (r = 0.97) can be used in both phycogeographical regions.  相似文献

Diatoms are important components of the marine food web and one of the most species-rich groups of phytoplankton. The diversity and composition of diatoms in eutrophic nearshore habitats have been well documented due to the outsized influence of diatoms on coastal ecosystem functioning. In contrast, patterns of both diatom diversity and community composition in offshore oligotrophic regions where diatom biomass is low have been poorly resolved. To compare the diatom diversity and community composition in oligotrophic and eutrophic waters, diatom communities were sampled along a 1,250 km transect from the oligotrophic Sargasso Sea to the coastal waters of the northeast US shelf. Diatom community composition was determined by amplifying and sequencing the 18S rDNA V4 region. Of the 301 amplicon sequence variants (ASVs) identified along the transect, the majority (70%) were sampled exclusively from oligotrophic waters of the Gulf Stream and Sargasso Sea and included the genera Bacteriastrum, Haslea, Hemiaulus, Pseudo-nitzschia, and Nitzschia. Diatom ASV richness did not vary along the transect, indicating that the oligotrophic Sargasso Sea and Gulf Stream are occupied by a diverse diatom community. Although ASV richness was similar between oligotrophic and coastal waters, diatom community composition in these regions differed significantly and was correlated with temperature and phosphate, two environmental variables known to influence diatom metabolism and geographic distribution. In sum, oligotrophic waters of the western North Atlantic harbor diverse diatom assemblages that are distinct from coastal regions, and these open ocean diatoms warrant additional study, as they may play critical roles in oligotrophic ecosystems.  相似文献

Currently, little information exists concerning high frequency climate change in the Antarctic, data that are essential to gaining a more complete understanding of global climate change. Sediments from the George V Coast continental margin potentially contain a high resolution record of the late Holocene. The relatively high rate of sedimentation ( 3 mm/year) and the presence of laminated intervals which contain undisturbed sequences make these sediments valuable for future downcore work. In order to utilize diatom assemblages as proxies of paleoclimatic and paleoceanographic parameters, a preliminary study of the surface sediment distribution of diatoms from the George V Coast continental margin was completed. Nitzschia curta (Van Heurck) Hasle and Nitzschia kerguelensis (O'Meara) Hasle present great potential for tracking the Holocene retreat of ice across the continental shelf of this region. Concentrations of N. curta, an “ice-related” form, decreases in an offshore direction, whereas N. kerguelensis, an “oceanic” species associated with circumpolar flow, displays an increase in sediments offshore. The genus Thalassiosira Cleve displays a clear association with areas of open water primary production, as has been noted in others parts of the Antarctic. Downcore variability in relative abundance of this genus will be useful in understanding the history of sea ice versus open water production on the George V Coast shelf. In contrast, the distribution of Chaetoceros Ehrenberg resting spores appears to be more complex, but may be related to the position of the stationary ice edge associated with the annual minimal extent of sea ice. Finally, an understanding of the downcore variability of Thalassiothrix antarctica Schimper ex Karsten, a species which is very abundant in the laminated sections of the sediment cores, will have to rely on studies of its distribution in other areas of the Antarctic, as it is sparsely distributed along the George V Coast today.  相似文献

The lipid and hydrocarbon composition of natural populations of diatom communities collected during the austral spring bloom of 1985 in the sea-ice at McMurdo Sound, Antartica was analyzed by TLC-FID, GC and GC-MS. Sea-ice diatom communities were dominated by Amphiprora sp., Nitzschia stellata Manguin and Berkeleya sp. at Cape Armitage; N. stellata, Amphiprora, Pleurosigma, N. kerguelensis (O'Meara) Hasle and some small centric diatoms adjacent to the Erebus Ice Tongue; and Porosira pseudodenticulata (Hustedt) Jouse at Wohlschlag Bay. Lipid distributions of the sea ice diatom communities from the Cape Armitage and Ereus sites were characterized by high concentrations of tracylaglecycerol (triacylglycerolplar lipid = 1.0 to 1.5). The hydrocarbon n-C21:6, common in temperate diatoms, and an isoprenoid C25 diunsaturated alkene were the dominant hydrocarons detected at these two sites. Hydrogenation of the C25 diene produced the known alkane 2, 6, 10, 14-tetramethyl-7- (3-methylpentyl)-pentadecane. The C25 diene is one of several structurally related hydrocarbons reported in many estuarine, coastal and ocean ic sediments. We propose that certain species of diatoms are a likely source of these alkenes in sediments. The first reported biological occurrence of the C25 diene in the green seaweed Enteromorpha prolifera may have been due to the presence of epiphytic microalgae in the field sample analysed.  相似文献

Diatom assemblages were analyzed from 64 lakes and ponds from Alert, Ellesmere Island and Mould Bay, Prince Patrick Island in the Canadian High Arctic Archipelago. Diverse water chemistry conditions and diatom communities were present in these sites. Small benthic taxa typically dominated diatom communities; however, assemblages were markedly different between Alert and Mould Bay sites in response to disparate water chemistry characteristics in the two regions. The most abundant taxa belonged to the genera Navicula, Cymbella, Achnanthes, Nitzschia, and Pinnularia. Canonical correspondence analysis indicated that pH, specific conductivity, dissolved organic carbon, and total phosphorus were the most important limnological variables in determining species composition. Diatom inference models were developed for pH, specific conductivity, and dissolved organic carbon using weighted averaging and weighted averaging partial least squares techniques; these had root mean square error of prediction/r2boot values of 0.40/0.77, 0.28/0.70, and 0.24/0.55, respectively. These models are applicable to sites with large ranges of taxonomic and limnological variation and will allow the reconstruction of past changes of climate‐related limnological parameters from biostratigraphic records in future paleolimnological studies.  相似文献

Fragilariopsis species composition and abundance from the Argentine Sea and Antarctic waters were analyzed using light and electron microscopy. Twelve species (F. curta, F. cylindrus, F. kerguelensis, F. nana, F. obliquecostata, F. peragallii, F. pseudonana, F. rhombica, F. ritscheri, F. separanda, F. sublinearis and F. vanheurckii) are described and compared with samples from the Frenguelli Collection, Museo de La Plata, Argentina. F. peragallii was examined for the first time using electron microscopy, and F. pseudonana was recorded for the first time in Argentinean shelf waters. New information on the girdle view is included, except for the species F. curta, F. cylindrus and F. nana, for which information already existed. In the Argentine Sea, F. pseudonana was the most abundant Fragilariopsis species, and in Antarctic waters, F. curta was most abundant. Of the twelve species of Fragilariopsis documented, four occurred in the Argentine Sea, nine in the Drake Passage and twelve in the Weddell Sea. F. curta, F. kerguelensis, F. pseudonana and F. rhombica were present everywhere.  相似文献

Diatoms are the main primary producers in the Southern Ocean, governing the major nutrient cycles. Fragilariopsis kerguelensis (O’Meara) Hust. is the most abundant diatom species in the Southern Ocean and its paleo‐oceanographic record is frequently used to reconstruct the past position and nutrient characteristics of the Antarctic polar front. Here we report on the responses of F. kerguelensis on prolonged exposure to a range of iron concentrations, allowing a characterization of morphological and nutrient‐depletion changes in relation to iron status. Under iron limitation, F. kerguelensis grew slower, cells became smaller, chains became shorter, and the nutrient‐depletion ratios changed. Prolonged exposure to iron limitation caused F. kerguelensis to decrease its surface area and volume 2‐fold, and to increase its surface‐to‐volume ratio by 25%. With the decrease in growth rates, silicon (Si) and phosphorus (P) depletion per cell remained fairly constant, but when normalized per surface area (Si) or per cell volume (P), depletion increased. In contrast, nitrogen (N) depletion per cell decreased significantly together with the decrease in growth rates but was constant when normalized per cell volume. The different response in Si, P, and N depletion resulted in changes in the nutrient‐depletion ratios, most notably in the Si:N ratio, which significantly increased, and in the N:P ratio, which significantly decreased with decreasing growth rates. It is concluded that under iron limitation, variation in cell size and/or nutrient depletion ultimately can cause changes in oceanic biogeochemical nutrient cycles. It enables the use of cell size of F. kerguelensis as a paleo‐oceanographic proxy.  相似文献
