A comparative study on stomatal control under water deficit was conducted on grapevines of the cultivars Grenache, of Mediterranean origin, and Syrah of mesic origin, grown near Montpellier, France and Geisenheim, Germany. Syrah maintained similar maximum stomatal conductance (gmax) and maximum leaf photosynthesis (Amax) values than Grenache at lower predawn leaf water potentials, Ψleaf, throughout the season. The Ψleaf of Syrah decreased strongly during the day and was lower in stressed than in watered plants, showing anisohydric stomatal behaviour. In contrast, Grenache showed isohydric stomatal behaviour in which Ψleaf did not drop significantly below the minimum Ψleaf of watered plants. When g was plotted versus leaf specific hydraulic conductance, Kl, incorporating leaf transpiration rate and whole‐plant water potential gradients, previous differences between varieties disappeared both on a seasonal and diurnal scale. This suggested that isohydric and anisohydric behaviour could be regulated by hydraulic conductance. Pressure‐flow measurements on excised organs from plants not previously stressed revealed that Grenache had a two‐ to three‐fold larger hydraulic conductance per unit path length (Kh) and a four‐ to six‐fold larger leaf area specific conductivity (LSC) in leaf petioles than Syrah. Differences between internodes were only apparent for LSC and were much smaller. Cavitation detected as ultrasound acoustic emissions on air‐dried shoots showed higher rates for Grenache than Syrah during the early phases of the dry‐down. It is hypothesized that the differences in water‐conducting capacity of stems and especially petioles may be at the origin of the near‐isohydric and anisohydric behaviour of g.  相似文献

It has been proposed that the stomatal response to humidity relies on sensing of the transpiration rate itself rather than relative humidity or the saturation deficit per se. We used independent measurements of stomatal conductance (gs), transpiration (E), and leaf-to-air vapour pressure difference (V) in a hybrid poplar canopy to evaluate relationships between gs and E and between gs and V. Relationships between E, V and total vapour phase conductance or crown conductance (gc) were also assessed. Conductance measurements were made on exposed and partially shaded branches over a wide range of incident solar radiation. In exposed branches, gs appeared to decline linearly with increasing E and increasing V at both high and low irradiance. However, in a partially shaded branch, a bimodal relationship between gs and E was observed in which gs continued to decrease after E had reached a maximum value and begun to decrease. The relationship between gs and V for this branch was linear. Plots of gc against E always yielded bimodal or somewhat variable relationships, whereas plots of gc against V were invariably linear. It was not possible to derive a unique relationship between conductance and E or V because prevailing radiation partially determined the operating range for conductance. Normalization of data by radiation served to linearize responses observed within the same day or type of day, but even after normalization, data collected on partly cloudy days could not be used to predict stomatal behaviour on clear days and vice versa. An additional unidentified factor was thus also involved in determining operating ranges of conductance on days with different overall radiation regimes. We suggest that the simplest mechanism to account for the observed humidity responses is stomatal sensing of the epidermal or cuticular transpiration rate rather than the bulk leaf or stomatal transpiration rate.  相似文献

Leaf diffusive conductance for water (gl) and twig xylem pressure (xt) was measured in juvenile silver birch, Betula pendula, under field conditions in southern Sweden. Data from one site were used to parameterise two different multiplicative models for gl (dependent data), and measurements from another site were used to validate these models (independent data). In addition, experiments were performed in controlled environments to validate the gl response functions used in the models. The driving variables in the D-model were photosynthetic photon flux density, air temperature and water vapour pressure deficit of the air (Da), while the DH-model also included the accumulated hours after sunrise each day with Da above a certain threshold (H). Both models satisfactorily predicted the variation in gl in dependent as well as in independent data, and the gl response functions used were supported by the experiments in controlled environments. The DH-model was more successful in predicting gl than the D-model by accounting for the observation that gl was lower at higher H under similar weather conditions. There was a considerable variation in maximum gl during the season, as well as between the two sites. On relatively warm and dry days xt rapidly declined during the morning and then stabilized around a constant value until the late afternoon, with the stomatal regulation effectively preventing xt from decreasing below this value. We suggest that these models could be used to simulate the gl in juvenile birch if maximum gl is locally estimated and if the response functions are not extrapolated beyond the climate range for this study.  相似文献

The leaf gas exchange of mature olive trees (Olea europaea L.) was characterized over a wide range of water deficits in the field during 1998, in Cordoba, Spain. Leaf photosynthesis (A) and stomatal conductance (gl) responded diurnally and seasonally to variations in tree water status and evaporative demand. In the absence of water stress, A and gl were generally high during autumn and low in days of high vapour pressure deficits (VPD). Leaf A varied between 0 and 2 µmol m?2 s?1 under severe water deficits that lowered the stem water potential (Ψx) to ?8·0 MPa, but recovered rapidly following rehydration. Transpiration efficiency (TE) was curvilinearly related to VPD and not influenced by water deficits except in cases of severe water stress, where low TE values were observed at Ψx below ?4 MPa. Three models of leaf conductance were calibrated and validated with the experimental data; two were based on the model proposed by Leuning (L) and the other was derived from the widely used Jarvis (J) model. The L models performed better than the J model in two validation tests. The scatter of the predictions and the limited accuracy of all three models suggest that, in addition to the physiological and environmental variables considered, there are additional endogenous factors influencing the gl of olive leaves.  相似文献

Cardiac fibroblasts are involved in the maintenance of myocardial tissue structure. However, little is known about ion currents in human cardiac fibroblasts. It has been recently reported that cardiac fibroblasts can interact electrically with cardiomyocytes through gap junctions. Ca2+-activated K+ currents (I K[Ca]) of cultured human cardiac fibroblasts were characterized in this study. In whole-cell configuration, depolarizing pulses evoked I K(Ca) in an outward rectification in these cells, the amplitude of which was suppressed by paxilline (1 μM) or iberiotoxin (200 nM). A large-conductance, Ca2+-activated K+ (BKCa) channel with single-channel conductance of 162 ± 8 pS was also observed in human cardiac fibroblasts. Western blot analysis revealed the presence of α-subunit of BKCa channels. The dynamic Luo-Rudy model was applied to predict cell behavior during direct electrical coupling of cardiomyocytes and cardiac fibroblasts. In the simulation, electrically coupled cardiac fibroblasts also exhibited action potential; however, they were electrically inert with no gap-junctional coupling. The simulation predicts that changes in gap junction coupling conductance can influence the configuration of cardiac action potential and cardiomyocyte excitability. I k(Ca) can be elicited by simulated action potential waveforms of cardiac fibroblasts when they are electrically coupled to cardiomyocytes. This study demonstrates that a BKCa channel is functionally expressed in human cardiac fibroblasts. The activity of these BKCa channels present in human cardiac fibroblasts may contribute to the functional activities of heart cells through transfer of electrical signals between these two cell types.  相似文献

Stomatal regulation is crucial for forest species performance and survival on drought‐prone sites. We investigated the regulation of root and shoot hydraulics in three Pinus radiata clones exposed to drought stress and its coordination with stomatal conductance (gs) and leaf water potential (Ψleaf). All clones experienced a substantial decrease in root‐specific root hydraulic conductance (Kroot‐r) in response to the water stress, but leaf‐specific shoot hydraulic conductance (Kshoot‐l) did not change in any of the clones. The reduction in Kroot‐r caused a decrease in leaf‐specific whole‐plant hydraulic conductance (Kplant‐l). Among clones, the larger the decrease in Kplant‐l, the more stomata closed in response to drought. Rewatering resulted in a quick recovery of Kroot‐r and gs. Our results demonstrated that the reduction in Kplant‐l, attributed to a down regulation of aquaporin activity in roots, was linked to the isohydric stomatal behaviour, resulting in a nearly constant Ψleaf as water stress started. We concluded that higher Kplant‐l is associated with water stress resistance by sustaining a less negative Ψleaf and delaying stomatal closure.  相似文献

Water use and hydraulic architecture were studied in the coffee (Coffea arabica) cultivars San Ramon, Yellow Caturra and Typica growing in the field under similar environmental conditions. The cultivars differed in growth habit, crown architecture, basal sapwood area and total leaf surface area. Transpiration per unit leaf area (E), stomatal conductance (g s), crown conductance (g c), total hydraulic conductance of the soil/leaf pathway (G t) and the stomatal decoupling coefficient, omega (Ω) (Jarvis and McNaughton 1986) were assessed over a range of soil moisture and during partial defoliation treatments. The relationship between sap flow and sapwood area was linear and appeared to be similar for the three cultivars. Variation in g c, E, and G t of intact plants and leaf area-specific hydraulic conductivity (k l) of excised lateral branches was negatively correlated with variation in the ratio of leaf area to sapwood area. Transpiration, g c, and g s were positively correlated with G t. Transpiration and G t varied with total leaf area and were greatest at intermediate values (10 m2) of leaf area. Omega was greatest in Yellow Caturra, the cultivar with the greatest leaf area and a dense crown, and was smallest in Typica, the cultivar with an open crown. Differences in omega were attributable primarily to differences in leaf boundary layer conductance among the cultivars. Plants of each cultivar that were 40% defoliated maintained sap flows comparable to pretreatment plants, but expected compensatory increases in g s were not consistently observed. Despite their contrasting crown morphologies and hydraulic architecture, the three cultivars shared common relationships between water use and hydraulic architectural traits. The extent to which stomatal conductance (gs) was capable of responding to reduced hydraulic conductance (k)and preventing cavitation-inducing xylem pressures was evaluated in the small riparian tree, Betula occidentalis Hook. We decreased k by inducing xylem cavitation in shoots using an air-injection technique. From 1 to 18 d after shoot injection we measured midday transpiration rate (E), gs, and xylem pressure (Ψp-xylem) on individual leaves of the crown. We then harvested the shoot and made direct measurements of k from the trunk (2–3 cm diameter) to the distal tip of the petioles of the same leaves measured for E and gs. The k measurement was expressed per unit leaf area (kl, leaf-specific conductance). Leaves measured within 2 d of shoot injection showed reduced gs and E relative to non-injected controls, and both parameters were strongly correlated with kl At this time, there was no difference in leaf Ψp-xylem between injected shoots and controls, and leaf Ψp-xylem was not significantly different from the highest cavitation-inducing pressure (Ψp-cav) in the branch xylem (-1.43 ± 0.029 MPa, n=8). Leaves measured 7–18 d after shoots were injected exhibited a partial return of gs and E values to the control range. This was associated with a decrease in leaf Ψp-xylem below Ψp-cav and loss of foliage. The results suggest the stomata were incapable of long-term regulation of E below control values and that reversion to higher E caused dieback via cavitation.  相似文献

Plant water relations, xylem anatomy and the hydraulic architecture of 1‐year‐old twigs of Spartium junceum, both healthy and affected by a phytoplasm disease, were studied. The disease causes twigs to be either shortened (witches broom disease, WBD) or flat (fasciate disease, FD). WBD twigs show a sevenfold increase in total leaf area, smaller and shorter xylem conduits, a higher stomatal conductance (gl) and a decline of minimum leaf water potentials ( Ψ l) below the turgor loss point. FD twigs had nearly twice the leaf area of the healthy controls as well as high gl values and Ψ l values below the turgor loss point. Moreover, significant differences between healthy and affected twigs in stem stomatal conductance (gs) and in the total stem area were recorded. Affected twigs die back under drought stress, which is explained by a pronounced loss of hydraulic conductivity of the infected stems (40 and 60%) in FD and WBD as well as by the unfavourable ratio of weighted conduit radius ( Σ r4) to total surface area (At), so that the efficiency of the stem in supplying the whole transpiring area with water is strongly reduced.  相似文献

Summary The relations between leaf conductance (gl) transpiration rate and root permeability to water (Rp) of three sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) cultivars grown in a controlled environment cabinet are described. No differences in transpiration rates were found but it was shown that plants with low values of Rp have active stomatal closure with favourable consequences for water use efficiency under water limiting conditions.Rp was estimated by applying hydrostatic pressure on the root system. Values of Rp per unit root volume ranged from 0.34×10–5 to 16.75×10–5 (s MPa–1). There were significant inter-cultivar differences (P<0.05) in Rp and gl and an inverse correlation between Rp and the maximum values cf gl within cultivars.Pressure applied on the root system is proposed as a useful tool for the determination of differences in the root permeability to water amongst sunflower cultivars.  相似文献

The hydraulic limitation hypothesis proposes that (1) reduced growth in taller trees is caused by decreased photosynthesis resulting from a decrease in hydraulic conductance promoted by a longer root‐to‐leaf flow path, and (2) this mechanism reduces stand productivity after canopy closure. This hypothesis was tested by comparing the physiology of 7 m (1 year) and 26 m (5 year) Eucalyptus saligna plantations where above‐ground productivity for the 26 m trees was approximately 69% of that for the 7 m trees, and water and nutrients were not limiting. The study compared whole tree physiology [water flux (Ql), average crown conductance (GT), crown hydraulic conductance per unit leaf area (KL), carbon isotope discrimination (δ13C)] and leaf physiology under light saturation (leaf water potential at the canopy top (ΨLEAF), photosynthetic capacity (Amax), and photosynthesis (A) and stomatal conductance (gs). KL was 50% lower in the taller trees, but whole tree Ql and GT were the same for the 7 m and 26 m trees. Photosynthetic capacity was the same for leaves at the canopy top, but δ13C was ?1.8‰ lower for the 26 m trees. A and gs were either lower in the taller trees or equal, depending on sampling date. The taller trees maintained 0.8 MPa lower ΨLEAF during the day and had 2.6‐times higher sapwood area per unit leaf area; these factors compensated for the effects of increased height and gravitational potential in the taller trees to maintain higher GT. The hydraulic limitation hypothesis (as originally stated) failed to explain the sharp decline in net primary productivity after canopy closure in this study. The effects of increased height appear to be a universal hydraulic problem for trees, but compensation mitigated these effects and maintained Ql and GT in the present study. Compensation may induce other problems (such as lower ΨLEAF or higher respiratory costs) that could reduce carbon gain or shift carbon allocation, and future studies of hydraulic limitation should consider compensation and associated carbon costs. In this study, the combination of similar GT and lower δ13C for the 26 m trees suggests that total crown photosynthesis was lower for the 26 m trees, perhaps a result of the lower ΨLEAF.  相似文献

Light saturated photosynthesis (A) in field saplings of shade tolerant, intermediate, and intolerant tree species was analyzed for stomatal and nonstomatal limitations to test differences between species and sun and shade phenotypes during drought. Throughout the study, photosynthesis was highest and mesophyll limitations of A (Lm) lowest in the intolerant species in both open and understory habitats. The shade tolerant species exhibited the only drought-related decreased A and increased Lm in the open, and the greatest drought-related decreased A and increased Lm in the understory. Few species exhibited significant habitat or drought-related differences in stomatal conductance to CO2 (gc), but even slight decreases in gc during drought were associated with large increases in stomatal limitations to A (Lg). Combined changes in Lm and Lg resulted in increased relative stomatal limitation to A (l g) in several species during drought. Nevertheless, the overall lack of stomatal closure allowed for nonstomatal limitations to play a major role in reduced A during drought. Higher leaf N was associated with shallower slope of the l g versus gc relationship, an indication of greater A capacity. Photosynthetic capacity tended to be greater in the intolerant species than the tolerant species, and it tended to decrease during drought primarily in the shade tolerant species in the understory. Findings in the literature suggest that carbon reduction reactions may be more susceptible to drought than photosynthetic light reactions. If so, reduced carbon reduction capacity of shade tolerant species or shade phenotypes may predispose them to drought conditions, which suggests a mechanism behind the well-recognized tradeoff between drought tolerance and shade tolerance of temperate tree species. A stochastic version of Kernell's (1968, 1972) model with cumulative afterhyperpolarization (AHP) was simulated. A characteristic of the model is that the AHP is the result of an increased potassium conductance (g K) that is time-dependent but not voltage-dependent. Quantal synaptic inputs are assumed to be the only source of interspike interval variability. The model reproduces many features of the steady-state discharge of peripheral vestibular afferents, provided that firing rates are higher than 40 spikes/s. Among the results accounted for are the interspike interval statistics occurring during natural stimulation, their alteration by externally applied galvanic currents and the increase in the interspike interval following an interposed shock. Empirical studies show that some vestibular afferents have a regular spacing of action potentials, others an irregular spacing (Goldberg and Fernández 1971b; Fernández and Goldberg 1976). Irregularly discharging afferents have a higher sensitivity to externally applied galvanic currents than do regular afferents (Goldberg et al. 1984). To explain the relation between galvanic sensitivity and discharge regularity requires the assumption that neurons differ in both their synaptic noise (v) and the slopes of their postspike voltage trajectories (d v/dt). The more irregular the neuron's discharge at a given firing frequency, the greater is v and the smaller is d v/dt. Of the two factors, d v/dt is estimated to be four times more influential in determining discharge regularity across the afferent population. The shortcomings of the model are considered, as are possible remedies. Our conclusions are compared to previous discussions of mechanisms responsible for differences in the discharge regularity of vestibular afferents.  相似文献

Two experiments examined simultaneous changes in leaf area (AL), root length (Lr), stomatal conductance (gs), leaf water potential (ΨL), transpiration and hydraulic plant conductance per unit leaf area (G) during the first three shoot cycles of northern red oak (Quercus rubra L.) grown under favourable and controlled conditions. Each shoot cycle consisted of bud swell, stem elongation, leaf expansion and rest; roots grew almost continuously. The gs of all leaves decreased substantially while leaves of the newest flush were expanding and increased modestly when seedling leaf area remained constant. Overall, gs decreased. The ΨL of mature leaves decreased during leaf expansion and increased by an equivalent amount during intervening periods. Possible explanations for the paired changes in gs and ΨL are considered. Changes in G closely paralleled those of canopy gs. These parallel changes during polycyclic seedling growth should act to keep seedling ΨL relatively constant as plant size increases and thereby help prevent ΨL from dropping to levels that would cause runaway embolism.  相似文献

Using a very low noise voltage clamp technique it has been possible to record from the squid giant axon a slow component of gating current (I g ) during the inactivation phase of the macroscopic sodium current (I Na ) which was hitherto buried in the baseline noise. In order to examine whether this slowI g contains gating charge that originates from transitions between the open (O) and the inactivated (I) states, which would indicate a true voltage dependence of inactivation, or whether other transitions contribute charge to slowI g , a new model independent analysis termed isochronic plot analysis has been developed. From a direct correlation ofI g and the time derivative of the sodium conductance dg Na/d the condition when only O-I transitions occur is detected. Then the ratio of the two signals is constant and a straight line appears in an isochronic plot ofI g vs. dg Na/d . Its slope does not depend on voltage or time and corresponds to the quantal gating charge of the O-I transition (q h ) divided by the single channel ionic conductance (). This condition was found at voltages above – 10 mV up to + 40 mV and a figure of 1.21e was obtained forq h at temperatures of 5 and 15°C. At lower voltages additional charge from other transitions, e.g. closed to open, is displaced during macroscopic inactivation. This means that conventional Eyring rate analysis of the inactivation time constant h is only valid above – 10 mV and here the figure forq h was confirmed also from this analysis. It is further shown that most of the present controversies surrounding the voltage dependence of inactivation can be clarified. The validity of the isochronic plot analysis has been confirmed using simulated gating and ionic currents.Abbreviations I g gating current - I Na sodium ionic current - g Na macroscopic sodium conductance - single channel conductance - C, O, I closed, open, inactivated state occupancy of channels - g h quantal charge displaced in a single O-I transition of Na channel - e equivalent electron charge - h index referring to inactivation process - S l limiting slope in isochronic plot see Eq.(3) - fractional distance, see Fig. 4 and (4, 5) - TMA tetramethylammonium - TTX tetrodotoxin - Tris tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane - HEPES N-2-hydroxyethylpiperazine-N-2-ethanesulfonic acid  相似文献

Water relations and gas exchange were studied in the crowns of small European larch (Larix decidua Mill.) trees with respect to branch position. The upper-crown branches showed significantly higher branch sap flux rate (F la) and branch conductance (g b) compared to the lower crown (P<0.001). Values of leaf conductance (g l), transpiration rate (E) and net photosynthesis (A), averaged for different ranges of atmospheric vapour pressure deficit (VPD), were also higher in the upper crown position. We suppose that the up to 2.6-fold smaller soil-to-leaf hydraulic conductance observed in the lower branches (P<0.001, compared to upper branches) could contribute to the decreased values of F la, g b, g l, and E in the lower crown position. Variation in tracheid lumen diameter with respect to crown position (P<0.001) supported the hypothesis that branches growing at the crown base are hydraulically more constrained than branches located at the top of the tree. Leaf area to sapwood area ratio (A la/A sa) exhibited 1.4 times smaller values in lower crown (P<0.01), however, this could not compensate the effect of decreased hydraulic conductivity of the lower-crown branches.  相似文献

Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) neurons exhibit at least two intrinsic modes of action potential burst firing, referred to as parabolic and irregular bursting. Parabolic bursting is characterized by a slow wave in membrane potential that can underlie periodic clusters of action potentials with increased interspike interval at the beginning and at the end of each cluster. Irregular bursting is characterized by clusters of action potentials that are separated by varying durations of interburst intervals and a relatively stable baseline potential. Based on recent studies of isolated ionic currents, a stochastic Hodgkin-Huxley (HH)-like model for the GnRH neuron is developed to reproduce each mode of burst firing with an appropriate set of conductances. Model outcomes for bursting are in agreement with the experimental recordings in terms of interburst interval, interspike interval, active phase duration, and other quantitative properties specific to each mode of bursting. The model also shows similar outcomes in membrane potential to those seen experimentally when tetrodotoxin (TTX) is used to block action potentials during bursting, and when estradiol transitions cells exhibiting slow oscillations to irregular bursting mode in vitro. Based on the parameter values used to reproduce each mode of bursting, the model suggests that GnRH neurons can switch between the two through changes in the maximum conductance of certain ionic currents, notably the slow inward Ca2+ current I s, and the Ca2+ -activated K+ current I KCa. Bifurcation analysis of the model shows that both modes of bursting are similar from a dynamical systems perspective despite differences in burst characteristics.  相似文献

Background and purpose

Vascular endothelial and smooth muscle cell phenotypes may change dramatically after isolation and in cell cultures. This study was designed to investigate gap junctions coupling in an integrated intact preparation and to test if KIR channels modulate resting membrane conductance in “in situ” endothelial cells (EC), and acetylcholine (ACh)-evoked relaxation of the rat superior mesenteric artery.

Experimental approach

Whole cell blind patch recordings of ionic currents from in situ EC, dye-coupling experiments, and functional studies were performed in rat superior mesenteric artery.

Key results

EC were dye-coupled through gap junctions. 18β-glycyrretinic acid (25 μM) decreased outward and inward currents, the 80% decay of time and time constant of the capacitative transients, capacitance, and increased input resistance. Barium chloride (30 μM) decreased resting and ACh-evoked inward currents, the sensitivity of ACh-evoked relaxation, and decreased both the sensitivity and the maximal relaxation to S-nitroso-N-acetyl penicillamine in arteries with, but not in arteries without endothelium.

Conclusions

The present results suggest that the EC layer of this large artery is electrically coupled, and that KIR channels regulate resting inward conductance, hence suggesting that they are of importance for resting membrane potential in in situ EC. Moreover, EC KIR channels are involved in ACh-evoked relaxation.  相似文献

Environmental and physiological regulation of transpiration were examined in several gap-colonizing shrub and tree species during two consecutive dry seasons in a moist, lowland tropical forest on Barro Colorado Island, Panama. Whole plant transpiration, stomatal and total vapor phase (stomatal + boundary layer) conductance, plant water potential and environmental variables were measured concurrently. This allowed control of transpiration (E) to be partitioned quantitatively between stomatal (g s) and boundary layer (g b) conductance and permitted the impact of invividual environmental and physiological variables on stomatal behavior and E to be assessed. Wind speed in treefall gap sites was often below the 0.25 m s–1 stalling speed of the anemometer used and was rarely above 0.5 m s–1, resulting in uniformly low g b (c. 200–300 mmol m–2 s–1) among all species studied regardless of leaf size. Stomatal conductance was typically equal to or somewhat greater than g b. This strongly decoupled E from control by stomata, so that in Miconia argentea a 10% change in g s when g s was near its mean value was predicted to yield only a 2.5% change in E. Porometric estimates of E, obtained as the product of g s and the leaf-bulk air vapor pressure difference (VPD) without taking g b into account, were up to 300% higher than actual E determined from sap flow measurements. Porometry was thus inadequate as a means of assessing the physiological consequences of stomatal behavior in different gap colonizing species. Stomatal responses to humidity strongly limited the increase in E with increasing evaporative demand. Stomata of all species studied appeared to respond to increasing evaporative demand in the same manner when the leaf surface was selected as the reference point for determination of external vapor pressure and when simultaneous variation of light and leaf-air VPD was taken into account. This result suggests that contrasting stomatal responses to similar leaf-bulk air VPD may be governed as much by the external boundary layer as by intrinsic physiological differences among species. Both E and g s initially increased sharply with increasing leaf area-specific total hydraulic conductance of the soil/root/leaf pathway (G t), becoming asymptotic at higher values of G t. For both E and g s a unique relationship appeared to describe the response of all species to variations in G t. The relatively weak correlation observed between g s and midday leaf water potential suggested that stomatal adjustment to variations in water availability coordinated E with water transport efficiency rather than bulk leaf water status.  相似文献

Because electrical coupling among the neurons of the brain is much faster than chemical synaptic coupling, it is natural to hypothesize that gap junctions may play a crucial role in mechanisms underlying very fast oscillations (VFOs), i.e., oscillations at more than 80 Hz. There is now a substantial body of experimental and modeling literature supporting this hypothesis. A series of modeling papers, starting with work by Roger Traub and collaborators, have suggested that VFOs may arise from expanding waves propagating through an “axonal plexus”, a large random network of electrically coupled axons. Traub et al. also proposed a cellular automaton (CA) model to study the mechanisms of VFOs in the axonal plexus. In this model, the expanding waves take the appearance of topologically circular “target patterns”. Random external stimuli initiate each wave. We therefore call this kind of VFO “externally driven”. Using a computational model, we show that an axonal plexus can also exhibit a second, distinctly different kind of VFO in a wide parameter range. These VFOs arise from activity propagating around cycles in the network. Once triggered, they persist without any source of excitation. With idealized, regular connectivity, they take the appearance of spiral waves. We call these VFOs “re-entrant”. The behavior of the axonal plexus depends on the reliability with which action potentials propagate from one axon to the next, which, in turn, depends on the somatic membrane potential V s and the gap junction conductance g gj . To study these dependencies, we impose a fixed value of V s , then study the effects of varying V s and g gj . Not surprisingly, propagation becomes more reliable with rising V s and g gj . Externally driven VFOs occur when V s and g gj are so high that propagation never fails. For lower V s or g gj , propagation is nearly reliable, but fails in rare circumstances. Surprisingly, the parameter regime where this occurs is fairly large. Even a single propagation failure can trigger re-entrant VFOs in this regime. Lowering V s and g gj further, one finds a third parameter regime in which propagation is unreliable, and no VFOs arise. We analyze these three parameter regimes by means of computations using model networks adapted from Traub et al., as well as much smaller model networks.  相似文献
