The development of the emerging field of ‘paleovirology’ allows biologists to reconstruct the evolutionary history of fossil endogenous retroviral sequences integrated within the genome of living organisms and has led to the retrieval of conserved, ancient retroviral genes ‘exapted’ by ancestral hosts to fulfil essential physiological roles, syncytin genes being undoubtedly among the most remarkable examples of such a phenomenon. Indeed, syncytins are ‘new’ genes encoding proteins derived from the envelope protein of endogenous retroviral elements that have been captured and domesticated on multiple occasions and independently in diverse mammalian species, through a process of convergent evolution. Knockout of syncytin genes in mice provided evidence for their absolute requirement for placenta development and embryo survival, via formation by cell–cell fusion of syncytial cell layers at the fetal–maternal interface. These genes of exogenous origin, acquired ‘by chance’ and yet still ‘necessary’ to carry out a basic function in placental mammals, may have been pivotal in the emergence of mammalian ancestors with a placenta from egg-laying animals via the capture of a founding retroviral env gene, subsequently replaced in the diverse mammalian lineages by new env-derived syncytin genes, each providing its host with a positive selective advantage.  相似文献

The objective of this paper is the structural and narrative reconstruction of representations of ‘nature’, ‘wildlife’ and ‘landscape’, held by rural residents of the Dadia Forest Reserve. Data collection involved in-depth interviews. Employing a social representations’ approach, we recovered representational elements that are expected in the case of rural belief systems, such as negative dispositions towards wolves and foxes, as well as elements of an urban adherence, such as nature’s independence. Representational elements refer to visual aspects of the countryside, which seem compatible with the figurative nucleus of the rural idyll. Concerning ‘wildlife’, residents focused on vultures, which comprise the main tourist attraction of the reserve. Scientific knowledge adds to the complexity of the narrative schema, which corresponds to the representation of ‘wildlife’. Interviewees perceived the rural landscape as an interface between the natural and the human-conditioned environment. Our study shows that interviewees make no reference to environmental conservation or quality of life issues, as it could be expected according to relatively wide definitions of the term ‘environmentalism’. Environmental messages reinforced by ecotourism development seem to be recalled primarily in terms of their compatibility with the perceived economic benefit of local people. Despite ecotourism development, representational elements that diverge from a tourist version of ‘nature’, ‘wildlife’ and ‘landscape’ were not pronounced within rural belief-systems. Further interventions within the study area are needed, in order to address a variety of topics under the environmental conservation discourse and raise the environmental awareness of rural residents.  相似文献

Female wild strain house mice (Mus musculus) can use olfactory cues to discriminate males carrying lethal t-alleles (+/t) from those that do not carry such alleles (+/+). When tested in an arena, female mice tend to avoid +/t males and preferentially direct approaches to +/+ males. The magnitude of a female's avoidance of +/t males is related to the female's own genotype. Females who are themselves +/t show greater avoidance than +/+ females. Male mice tend to be more aggressive toward females carrying t-alleles and are less likely to attempt copulations with such females than with +/+ females. I suggest that these social preferences may be related to mating preferences, providing an example of mating preference based on genetic quality. Furthermore, avoidance of +/t individuals as mates could account for the lower than expected frequency of t-alleles in natural populations.  相似文献

Wheat production in many wheat-growing regions is vulnerable to stem rust, caused by Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici (Pgt). Several previous studies showed that most of the durum cultivars adapted to the upper Great Plains in the USA have good resistance to the major Pgt pathotypes, including the Ug99 race group. To identify the stem rust resistance (Sr) genes in the durum cultivar ‘Lebsock’, a tetraploid doubled haploid (DH) population derived from a cross between Lebsock and Triticum turgidum ssp. carthlicum PI 94749 was screened with the Pgt races TTKSK, TRTTF, and TTTTF. The stem rust data and the genotypic data previously developed were used to identify quantitative trait loci (QTL) associated with resistance. We identified one QTL each on chromosome arms 4AL, 6AS, 6AL, and 2BL. Based on marker and race-specification analysis, we postulated that the QTL on 4AL, 6AS, 6AL, and 2BL correspond to Sr7a, Sr8155B1, Sr13, and likely Sr9e, respectively. The results indicated that most of the US durum germplasm adapted to the upper Great Plains likely harbors the four major Sr genes characterized in this study. Among these genes, Sr8155B1 was recently identified and shown to be unique in that it conferred susceptibility to TTKSK but resistance to variant race TTKST. Two, three, and one thermal asymmetric reverse PCR (STARP) markers were developed for Sr7a, Sr8155-B1, and Sr13, respectively. Knowledge of the Sr genes in durum germplasm and the new STARP markers will be useful to pyramid and deploy multiple Sr genes in future durum and wheat cultivars.  相似文献

The formation of male-female social bonds and the resulting competition among females for male partners is a core element of human societies. While female competition for a male partner outside the mating context is well studied in humans, evidence from non-human primates is scarce, and its evolutionary roots remain to be explored. We studied two multi male – multi female groups of wild Assamese macaques (Macaca assamensis), a species where females gain benefits from selectively affiliating with particular males. Using a behavioral data set collected over several years, we tested whether females competed over access to male social partners, whether success in competition was driven by female dominance rank, and which male traits were most attractive for females. We found assortative bonding by dominance rank between females and males, which together with females initiating and maintaining contact suggests direct female competition over males. Two male traits independently predicted male attractiveness to females: (1) current dominance rank, a measure of 'power' or a male's ability to provide access to resources, and (2) prior male affiliation with immatures, a measure of a male's potential paternal proclivity or 'commitment' to infant care. Both traits have been consistently identified as drivers of female partner choice in humans. Our study adds to the evidence that female competition for valuable male partners is not unique to humans, suggesting deep evolutionary origins of women's mate choice tendencies for ‘power’ and ‘commitment’.  相似文献

The chromosomal locations of genes for resistance to stem rust (Puccinia graminis Pers.: Pers. f. sp. tritici Eriks. & E. Henn.) in the wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivar ‘Waldron’ (WDR) were determined by monosomic analyses. Wheat lines WDR-B1, -C2, -E4, and -F1,which have single genes for resistance to stem rust derived previously from WDR sel. ‘Little Club’, were crossed onto a complete set of 21 ‘Chinese Spring’ monosomics. The F2 and backcross-F1 (BC1F1) seedlings from each of the 84 crosses were tested for reaction to culture 111-SS2 (CRL-LCBB) of stem rust, and a few selected segregants were analyzed cytologically for chromosome number. The F2 from 2 crosses of WDR-C2, -E4 and -F1 and the BC1F1 from 2 crosses of WDR-F1 were tested also with culture Or11c (CRL-QBCN). Significant deviations from disomic ratios towards monosomic ratios in the F2 and BC1F1 were used to determine which chromosomes carried the genes for resistance. Cytological analyses of certain BC1F1 and susceptible F2 plants were used to help identify the location of the genes for rust resistance. WDR-B1 has a gene, herein designated Sr41, for resistance on chromosome 4D. WDR-C2 has a gene on chromosome 7 A that may be the same as one previously designated SrWld2. WDR-E4 has a gene on chromosome 2A, possibly SrWld1, which is effective against most or all North American stem rust cultures. WDR-F1 has a gene on chromosome 6B that is the same as or similar to Sr11.  相似文献

This study reports that Corsican blue tit (Parus caeruleus ogliastrae) nests contain between one to five aromatic herb species between the onset of egg laying till the chicks’ finished growth 13 d after hatching. An herb removal experiment during the chick stage shows that blue tits bring fresh aromatic material 1–5 d after herb removal. Nests with a series of distinct odour classes easily perceived by humans have never been reported in birds. A new ‘Potpourri’ hypothesis is proposed that may explain the functional significance of this behaviour.  相似文献

In this study we aimed to screen effective biomarkers for differential diagnosis of ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn’s disease (CD). By using the gene expression profile dataset GSE24287 including 47 ileal CD, 27 UC and 25 non-inflammatory bowel diseases control downloaded from Gene Expression Omnibus database, we identified the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between UC patients and controls as well as between CD patients and controls (|log2FC(fold change)| > 1 and p < 0.05). Then Gene Ontology (GO) functional enrichment analyses were performed for these DEGs in two groups, followed by the construction of weight PPI (protein–protein interaction) networks. Subnets enriched for the PPIs and differentially expressed genes were constructed based on the weight PPI networks. The overlapping genes between the genes in the top 10 subnets with smallest p value and the DEGs were selected as the candidate genes of disease. A total of 75 DEGs were identified in UC group and 87 ones in CD group. There were 69 and 57 specific DEGs in CD group and UC group, respectively. The DEGs in CD group were mainly enriched in “inflammatory response” and “defense response”, while the most significantly enriched GO terms in UC group were “anion transport” and “chemotaxis”. FOS and SOCS3 were identified as candidate genes for CD and other three genes HELB, ZBTB16 and FAM107A were candidate genes for UC. In conclusion, there were distinct genetic alterations between UC and CD. The candidate genes identified in current study may be used as biomarkers for differential diagnosis of CD and UC.  相似文献
