In addition to courting females, male threespine sticklebacks must guard their nests from attacks on the eggs by female cannibals. We hypothesized that the presence of females in high densities in tide pools adversely affects a male's health and reproductive success. In the laboratory males housed with conspecific females during the breeding season were in poorer physical condition and died sooner than solitary males and males housed with conspecific males or with heterospecific females.  相似文献

Attempts by males to steal fertilizations from other males are common in many species. In some sticklebacks, males also are known to steal eggs from the nests of rivals and to carry them back to their own nests. However the genetic consequences of these nest-raiding behaviors seldom have been investigated. Here we assess genetically the prevalence of sneaked fertilizations and egg stealing, and we describe the mating system in a natural population of the fifteenspine stickleback. Six microsatellite markers were developed and employed to assay a total of 1307 embryos from 28 nests. Guardian males and all nest-holding males in the local area also were genotyped for two to six loci Analysis of male genotypes and those of embryos revealed that five of the 28 nests (18%) contained progeny from sneaked fertilizations, and that four of the 24 nests (17%) with resident males contained stolen egg clutches Comparisons of the composite DNA genotypes of nest-holding males against those of inferred sneakers implicated one nest holder as the sneaker of a nest seven meters from his own. Also, the genetic data demonstrated that nests of males frequently contain eggs from multiple females. The multilocus genotypes of inferred mothers indicated that females mate with multiple males, sometimes over distances greater than one kilometer.  相似文献

Filial cannibalism occurs in many animal species ranging from insects to mammals, and is especially well described in teleost fishes. Numerous causes may lead to this behaviour, e.g. certainty of paternity. However, the cues males use to assess their paternity often remain unknown. One possible way to differentiate between own and foreign offspring is by using egg cues. Nevertheless, in egg-laying species, evidence for this is still scarce. In this study, male three-spined sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus), a fish with paternal care in which sneaking as well as filial cannibalism is common, were allowed to care for manipulated nests that contained different percentages of own fertilized eggs. After 7 days, embryo survival was determined. Furthermore, brood-caring as well as aggressive behaviour was measured daily. Clutches containing a higher proportion of foreign eggs were more likely to be completely cannibalized than clutches containing a lower proportion of foreign eggs, particularly when the clutch was laid early in the breeding season. However, the behavioural observations revealed no influence of paternity. The results show that paternity triggers filial cannibalism in sticklebacks and that males are able to evaluate their paternity using egg cues alone.  相似文献

Under laboratory conditions, female three-spined sticklebacks(Gasterosteus aculeatus L.) show a mating preference for intenselyred-colored males. We verified this female choice in the fieldby observing a freshwater stickleback population in its naturalhabitat. During the egg collection phase, individual courtingmales were localized with the aid of a dummy of a ripe female,caught and photographed under standardized conditions, and released.After males had stopped collecting eggs, we counted the numberof eggs in the nests. The more intense a male's red breedingcoloration, the more eggs he received. Simultaneous female choiceexperiments in the laboratory suggested that ripe females ofthis population preferred redder males. Breeding activitiesof the males in the field were clustered and seem to be synchronizedwithin clusters. At one of the breeding sites, more intensered males were in better physical condition, but this was notthe case at another site. Although several synchronized breedingcycles were observed, the majority of males seem to completeonly one breeding cycle.  相似文献

Polymorphism in the nuptial colouration of male Threespine sticklebacks ( Garterosteus aculeatus L.) was studied. In Lake Wapato in Eastern Washington, approximately 14% of the breeding males develop typical red nuptial colouration while others develop various colours which were grouped into a non-red category. The hypothesis was tested that red males are adaptive in Lake Wapato as a result of sexual selection and differential egg predation.
In a series of mate preference tests, females demonstrated a significant preference for red males over non-red males. In a second experiment, using artiticially coloured non-red males, it was shown that the females are responding to the red colouration alone. This evidence suggests that one of the selective pressures maintaining the red morph is sexual selection.
In a stomach analysis of male and female sticklebacks collected from a breeding colony it was found that 51 % of the fish examined had stickleback eggs in their stomachs. Both male and female sticklebacks eat a large number of eggs; however, males eat significantly more eggs than females. Eggs were found to be most susceptible to predation during their first four days of development. Given that red ventral colouration has threat value, red males may also be adaptive because of a reduction in egg predation within their territories in contrast to non-red males.
One of the selective forces against red males is probably differential predation by trout ( Salmo gairdneri ). This trout predation has been shown to be extensive in Lake Wapato. The opposing selective forces discussed in this paper cannot maintain the polymorphism; they are only components of fitness of the colour morphs.  相似文献

The present study investigated the relationship between plasma steroid hormone levels and the expression ofpaternal behavior in the plainfin midshipman fish (Porichthys notatus), where males may simultaneously care for multiple clutches in different stages of development. Blood samples were collected from free-living parental males during that part of the breeding season when males may be found in various stages of parental care. Plasma 11-ketotestosterone levels were significantly higher in males with empty nests and nests containing only eggs than in males with nests containing embryos. All males with nests containing embryos had undetectable testosterone levels, whereas testosterone levels were detectable in many males with empty nests or nests containing only eggs. Estradiol levels were detectable in only a few males from nests with no eggs or nests containing only eggs. Cortisol levels were not correlated with stage of paternal care or with handling time. These results follow the frequently reported vertebrate pattern of declining androgen levels over the course of the breeding season or during the period of parental care. However, many male midshipman guarding nests containing only eggs had androgen levels similar to those of males whose nests contained no offspring. Thus the pattern of androgen levels exhibited by reproductively active parental male midshipman may reflect a compromise between investment in paternal care versus courtship and/or territoriality.  相似文献

This study investigated the effects of food ration and male density on the territoriality and nest-building of sexually mature, male, three-spined sticklebacks. For a given density of males and when the food was distributed randomly throughout the area in which territories could be established, the proportion that established territories and built nests increased with ration. The proportion of males that held territories decreased with an increase in male density, while the rate at which nests were destroyed increased. When the food was distributed so that some males regularly obtained more food than others, these males tended to increase the size of their territories if they had built a nest. In the absence of a nest, territory size declined. It is suggested that high rations increased the resource holding power (RHP) of the males, while the presence of a nest increased the value of the territory to the occupier.  相似文献

The sand goby, Pomatoschistus minutus , was used in aquarium experiments to study the importance of body size for the ability of males to gain access to nest sites and mates. When several male and female P. minutus were allowed to reproduce together, on average, half of the males built nests, and half of those males obtained eggs in their nests. Males with nests were significantly larger than males without nests, and nests with eggs belonged to males larger than the males with empty nests. In another experiment, when two males were competing for one nest, the largest male occupied the nest when both fish were put into the aquarium simultaneously. However, when the smaller male had been allowed to establish a nest before the larger male was introduced, the small male could usually retain the nest. Males with a body length < 50 mm did not build nests at all in the early part of the breeding season. In female choice experiments, no preference for larger males was found. Thus, male-male competition for nest sites and behavioural differences between different sized males seem to be the main factors influencing the non-random mating success in male P. minutus.  相似文献

Female mate preference for males tending young offspring has been demonstrated in many fishes; however, not much is known about the choice process. Using the barred chin blenny Rhabdoblennius ellipes, a fish with male uniparental care, field experiments were conducted to investigate the female preference for males tending young eggs and then whether females choose the males with young eggs by discriminating young eggs from old eggs in the nests. Males tending young eggs (0‐ to 2‐d old) acquired new eggs nine times more frequently than those tending old eggs (3‐ to 5‐d old) regardless of other traits in males and nests. In the two egg‐switching field experiments (old to young and young to old), contrary to our expectation, male mating success was neither enhanced when given young eggs nor inhibited when given old eggs. These results suggested that females choose males with young eggs not by discriminating the developmental stage of eggs in the nests but by using other choice processes. By choosing males with young eggs, females may benefit from the dilution effects of egg predation and filial cannibalism risks and avoid male parental care failure.  相似文献

Biased sex ratios of breeding threespine sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus L.) occur naturally in tide-pools of a Quibec saltmarsh. We experimentally manipulated sex ratios in certain pools to evaluate the effects on male behaviour and reproductive success (RS). Sticklebacks were stocked at male: female ratios of 1: I, 1: 2 and 2: 1 and observed for a 23-day inter-tidal period. In male-biased pools, only half of the males built nests, compared to nearly 100% in unbiased and female-biased pools. Males in male-biased pools also were less likely to rebuild after losing a nest, visited their nests less often, were more likely to abandon or destroy their nests, had lower RS (measured as the proportion of males hatching fry), but hatched fry sooner, than males in other pools. In female-biased pools, males built nests sooner, lost more nests due to nest-raiding by females, spent more time in aggression (proportion of time spent fighting and threatening), spent more time attacking female conspecifics than male conspecifics or heterospecifics, and courted more frequently, than males in other pools. Habituation to conspecific males, but not to females, occurred in all pools. These findings are discussed with respect to sexual selection theory.  相似文献

In fish that exhibit paternal care, the females often choose their mates on the basis of male traits that are indicative of the parental ability of the males. In a marine goby, Eviota prasina, males tend their eggs within their nests until hatching, and females prefer males that have longer dorsal fins and exhibit courtship behavior with a higher frequency as their mates. In order to clarify the relationship between these sexually selected traits and the parental ability of males of E. prasina, the factors affecting the hatching success of eggs within male nests and the male parental care behavior were examined in an aquarium experiment. Females spawned their eggs in male nests and the clutch size of females showed a high individual variation (range = 88-833 eggs). The hatching success of eggs within male nests showed a positive correlation with the time spent by males in fanning eggs and the clutch size. In contrast to the prediction, however, the hatching success did not show a significant correlation with the sexually selected traits, i.e., the male dorsal fin length and the frequency of courtship displays. Moreover, multiple regression analysis indicated that the time spent by the males in fanning was the most important factor affecting the survival rate of the eggs. The time spent by males in fanning behavior was influenced by the clutch size within their nests; the fanning behavior of males occurred with a higher frequency when they tended larger clutches. Males are required to invest a greater effort in egg-tending behavior to achieve a higher hatching success when they receive larger clutches, probably due to the greater reward for their parental behavior. Based on their mate choice, females may obtain other benefits such as high quality offspring.  相似文献

Male sticklebacks with nests were more aggressive towards other males than were males which had yet to build nests.Males with nests were more aggressive towards other males than towards non-gravid females. This was not true of fish that had yet to build nests.The increased aggression shown to other males by males with nests was reduced after gonadectomy to the level characteristic of fish that had yet to build nests. This reduction occurred in the first week after the operation. Gonadectomy had no immediate effect on the aggression shown to non-gravid females.The aggression of males that had still to build nests was not reduced by gonadectomy.Gonadectomy resulted in a complete absence of nest building and nest-directed behaviour.  相似文献

The relationship between egg number and survival in nests of three-spined sticklebacks Gasterosteus aculeatus was tested in the field. Nests were deprived of paternal care during a variable period by removal of the father while preventing egg predation by protection of the nest by a net. Upon male removal, a number of male traits were quantified. Nest-content variables and embryo survival were assessed at the end of the deprivation period. Proportional egg mortality was significantly positively correlated with the length of the deprivation period, the number of eggs present in the nest and egg size, thus suggesting that nests with more and larger eggs need more paternal care. Males with the most symmetrical ventral spines achieved the highest reproductive success as measured by the number of eggs in the nest. In addition, their nests contained relatively larger eggs. Spine length symmetry correlated with the blue intensity of the eye thus giving females several cues to assess male quality.  相似文献

The Reed Warbler Acrocephalus scirpaceus is a largely monogamous insectivorous passerine in which males and females provide equal care by day to eggs and chicks. Polygyny occurs occasionally, with males leaving one female unaided. When females were temporarily removed from three recently-completed clutches their males deserted and resumed the high song levels typical of unmated males. Males may desert either because they are physically incapable of incubation or because the energy expenditure needed for a male to return to an equivalent stage in the breeding cycle is much lower than for a female to do so. Widowed females ( n = 7 ), however, continued the breeding attempt alone, with similar incubation levels but higher provisioning rates than those of control females. In three out of four mid-season broods raised by lone females all fertile eggs were reared to healthy fledglings (in the fourth brood the female died), while only one of four late-season nests produced any fledglings (which were underweight). Late-season control nests were as successful as earlier ones. Loss of male help led to starvation of chicks, but caused no adverse effects during incubation. This explains the small changes in widows' sitting levels during incubation, but much greater effects after hatching. Females may need male help to rear late broods (but not early broods) as days are shorter and food is scarcer. Males may normally help at nests, even those in the mid-season, because in stressful spells (even for a few days) such help is vital for successful breeding but in good periods it costs the male little.  相似文献

The ability to discriminate between own and foreign eggs was investigated in brood-caring male three-spined sticklebacks Gasterosteus aculeatus . Males totally cannibalized clutches that contained both foreign and their own eggs significantly more often than sham-manipulated control clutches that only contained their own eggs. To investigate the population-level effects of exposure to environmental endocrine disrupters, a mesocosm-scale study was carried out in which the reproductive performance of groups of free-spawning three-spined sticklebacks, Gasterosteus aculeatus, exposed as juveniles to a model estrogen, was assessed. Juvenile sticklebacks were exposed to ethinyl estradiol (EE(2)) at measured concentrations of (mean +/- SEM) 1.75 +/- 0.37 ng L(-1) and 27.7 +/- 1.08 ng L(-1) for 4 wk posthatch and then reared thereafter in pristine lake water until they reached adulthood. Exposure to the higher EE(2) concentration resulted in the occurrence of ovotestis among males, whereas no gonadal abnormalities were evident among males exposed to the lower concentration of EE(2). In addition, when spawning was allowed in the mesocosm environment, fewer nests were built per male, and fewer eggs were deposited per nest, in the group exposed to 27.7 ng L(-1). Males from this group also exhibited a less intense nuptial coloration than control males. In the group exposed to 1.75 ng L(-1) EE(2) posthatch, significantly fewer nests were built than in the control group. These results demonstrate that the timing of exposure to estrogenic contaminants, in developmental terms, is critically important. Short-term exposure to estrogens as juveniles can clearly influence reproductive performance as adults, despite all growth and development subsequent to the exposure period taking place in an estrogen-free environment. In addition, these results suggest that reproductive dysfunction can occur even in fish with no gross abnormalities in gonadal structure. This suggests that the absence of gonadal intersex is not a reliable indicator of the reproductive potential, or estrogen-exposure history, of fish populations or the only important factor involved in compromising the reproduction of estrogen-exposed fish.  相似文献

Field and laboratory studies were conducted to clarify the processes contributing to the size-assortative nest use by males of a paternal brooding blenny Rhabdoblennius ellipes . The use of natural and artificial nests by males in the field was highly size-assortative; males used smaller nests even when larger nests were available. Aquarium nest choice experiments without a competitive male strongly suggested that the size-assortative nest use by males is not the result of male–male competition for larger nests, but male preference for size-matched nests. Males were likely to choose nests on the basis of the nest entrance size rather than nest length and volume, suggesting that the size-assortative nest preference in this species is an adaptation to predation pressure against eggs and resident males.  相似文献

To inquire how male size interacts with alloparental behaviour and mating success in the tessellated darter Etheostoma olmstedi, males were given a choice of nests with or without eggs; subsequent nest occupancy, takeovers and egg deposits were monitored. The mate choice and mating pattern of a benthic goby Rhinogobius sp. CB (cross band type) were investigated in the Kamo River, Shikoku, Japan. During the breeding season, gravid females assumed a nuptial color and either males or females initiated a courtship display. Males preferentially courted a female of similar size to lead her to his nest, whereas females courted more frequently when they encountered a large male. Eggs in any one nest were always at the same developmental stage. Sampling data of nesting males and females indicated that, in more than half the nests, males gathered more than one female before spawning. In some nests with eggs, two or three females had spent ovaries, indicating that the eggs were laid by multiple females within a short span of time. However, a comparison between the total number of eggs which females would spawn in one nest and the number of eggs actually deposited suggested that eggs were contributed by one female in most nests. This low level of polygyny in spite of multiple female availability is attributed to a limited available spawning area of the nest.  相似文献

Female barred-chin blenny Rhabdoblennius ellipes prefer to mate with males tending young eggs, possibly to reduce the risk of male selective filial cannibalism against young eggs in the nests. To test this hypothesis, we conducted aquarium experiments with nests containing eggs at different developmental stages. All egg-tending males consumed both young and old eggs. However, the observed and expected number of consumed young eggs did not differ, indicating that R. ellipes males do not selectively cannibalize young eggs in nests with eggs of mixed developmental stages. Relatively small differences in egg age within a nest may explain this nonselectivity in this species.  相似文献
