Capelin (Mallotus villosus) is a commercially exploited, key forage-fish species found in the boreal waters of the North Pacific and North Atlantic Oceans. We examined the population structure of capelin throughout their range in the Canadian northwest Atlantic Ocean using genetic-based methods. Capelin collected at ten beach and five demersal spawning locations over the period 2002 through 2008 (N = 3,433 fish) were genotyped using six polymorphic microsatellite loci. Temporally distinct samples were identified at three beach spawning locations: Chance Cove, Little Lawn and Straitsview, Newfoundland. Four capelin stocks are assumed for fisheries management in the northwest Atlantic Ocean based on meristics, morphometrics, tag returns, and seasonal distribution patterns. Our results suggested groupings that were somewhat different than the assumed structure, and indicate at least seven genetically defined populations arising from two ancestral populations. The spatial mosaic of capelin from each of the two basal cluster groups explains much of the observed geographic variability amongst neighbouring samples. The genetic-defined populations were resolved at Jost’s D est ≥ 0.01 and were composed of fish collected 1) in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, 2) along the south and east coasts of Newfoundland, 3) along coastal northern Newfoundland and southern Labrador, 4) along coastal northern Labrador, 5) near the Saguenay River, and at two nearshore demersal spawning sites, 6) one at Grebes Nest off Bellevue Beach on the east coast of Newfoundland, and 7) one off the coast of Labrador at Domino Run. Moreover, the offshore demersal spawners on the Scotian Shelf and Southeast Shoal appeared to be related to the inshore demersal spawners at Grebes Nest and in Domino Run and to beach spawners from the Gulf of St. Lawrence.  相似文献

The lipid composition of muscle tissue in the capelin Mallotus villosus from Anadyr population was studied in connection with its physiological state, location, and season of fishery. The content of lipids in sexually mature Anadyr capelin in July–October rose from 8.5 to 11.8%, which is slower than the process of lipid accumulation in the capelin of the related Pribylov population. A predominance was confirmed of the total fatty acids 20 : 1 over the total acids 22 : 1 (the difference was about 15% ) in the lipids of the mature fattening capelin, as well as predominance of the total content of these two monoenoic acids in males compared with females. In the Anadyr capelin, this difference can be characterized as follows: (20 : 1 + 22 : 1)males / (20 : 1 + 22 : 1) females = 1.3. It is obvious that processes of accumulation of monoenoic fatty acids in reserve lipids proceed under strong metabolic control that differs in males and females.  相似文献

Northern gannets (Sula bassana) are considered to obtain prey usually by rapid, vertical, shallow plunge dives. In order to test this contention and investigate underwater foraging behaviour, we attached two types of data-logging systems to 11 parental northern gannets at Funk Island in the North-Wiest Atlantic. We documented, for the first time to the authors' knowledge, gannets performing long, flat-bottomed, U-shaped dives that involved underwater wing propulsion as well as rapid, shallow, V-shaped dives. The median and maximum dive depths and durations were 4.6 and 22.0 m and 8 and 38 s, respectively. Short, shallow dives were usually V-shaped and dives deeper than 8 m and longer than 10 s were usually U-shaped, including a period at constant depth (varying between 4 and 28s with median 8s). Diving occurred throughout the daylight period and deepest dives were performed during late morning. On the basis of motion sensors in the loggers and food collections from telemetered birds, we concluded that extended, deep dives were directed at deep schools of capelin, a small pelagic fish, and we hypothesized that V-shaped dives were aimed at larger, pelagic fishes and squids. Furthermore, these V-shaped dives allowed the birds to surprise their pelagic prey and this may be critical because the maximum swimming speeds of the prey species may exceed the maximum dive speeds of the birds.  相似文献

Twelve microsatellite loci developed for Atlantic capelin (Mallotus villosus) using magnetic bead hybridization enrichment for tetranucleotide microsatellites revealed five loci composed of single repeat elements and six composed of complex repeats. Forty‐four beach‐spawning females from three different northwestern Atlantic Newfoundland beach‐spawning populations were screened at each locus. Loci were polymorphic (two to 59 alleles per locus) and all but two exhibited high heterozygosity (0.86–1). The loci are considered suitable for addressing questions related to fine‐scale population structure, spawning fidelity and survivorship/kinship issues.  相似文献

Ovaries of female capelin, Mallotus villosus villosus (M), from the Barents Sea were sampled at various times of the year and material conserved for morphological examination. The maturity of female capelin, was assessed using low power microscopy for examination of whole oocytes. The diameters of oocytes were measured to give additional information regarding development, and to study the growth rate of the ripening oocytes. A maturity scale for use in the field is described based on the result of low power microscopy. A comparison is made between the'old'and'new'maturity scales, and the ease of use of the new scale has been tested.  相似文献

Two pepsins from the stomach of the arctic fish capelin (Mallotus villosus) have been isolated and characterized. The purification was achieved by ammonium sulphate precipitation, ion exchange chromatography and gel filtration. Both pepsins resemble mammalian pepsins regarding pepstatin sensitivity, amino acid composition, stability and specific activity. The major capelin pepsin has optimum activity at significantly higher pH than is common for mammalian pepsins, and the optimum pH is different with different substrates. Both pepsins have relatively high activity at low temperatures. The pepsins have mol. wt of about 25,000 which is significantly lower than that of mammalian pepsins.  相似文献

In October 1977 the model of general circulation of the watermasses off the coast of Galicia, and the presence of a coastalupwelling, led to a high primary productivity. This high productivityin turn favoured the development of a rich population of decapodlarvae. The abundance and distribution pattern of these organismswere closely linked (i) to the abundant presence of the correspondingadult species in the area, (ii) with the spatial distributionof phytoplanktonic populations concurrently studied by Estrada[J. Plankton Res ., 6, 417–434 (1984)] and (iii) withthe hydrodynamic pattern in the area. Fifty-two decapod larvaetaxa were identified and Solenocera membranacea, Pisidia longicornis,Pilumnushirtellus and Goneplax rhomboides were the most representativespecies It was observed that the greatest concentrations oflarvae (3387 larvae 10–2 m–3) were to be found nearthe mouth of the Rfas Baixas (situated in the south-west ofthe coastal area) and in some zones further out to sea (863larvae 10–2 m–3) (due to a process of hydrodynamictransport)  相似文献

The population dynamics of the chaetognath Sagitta elegans Verrill has been followed in Balsfjorden in 1976 and 1977. Seasonal variation in abundance, length-frequency distribution, growth in total length, and maturity stages are presented and discussed in relation to changes in hydrography. An annual generation of S. elegans was found, with a protracted and more or less continuous breeding season from May until October during 1977. The 1976 year-class consisted of two distinct length groups, both of which participated in the 1977 spawning. This spawning gave rise to possibly four sub-populations during 1977. The variation in numbers of sub-populations produced during the spawning season in 1976 and 1977 is discussed in relation to the hydrographical conditions in Balsfjorden. From November 1976 to March 1977 the abundance of S. elegans varied between 1 and 8 ind. · m?3. The lowest value was recorded in May (0.9 ind. · m?3). From September to December 1977 the population abundance was ≈2 ind. · m?3.  相似文献

Summary The present paper describes the composition, abundance, biomass and diversity of the meso- and macrozooplankton in the epipelagic zone of the open water and under the ice of the northern Weddell Sea. Samples were collected in October/November 1988 with a multiple RMT1+8 net during the European Polarstern Study (EPOS). Multivariate analysis resulted in two distinct site clusters, a northern one mainly located in the open water/marginal ice zone and a southern one extending from the marginal ice zone into the consolidated pack-ice. Clusters were, however, faunistically coherent with a high degree in positive covariation of species. There was no basis for the separation into communities, but differences occurred on the population level in numerical abundances, biomass (wet weight) and in a shift in species dominance. Different ice zones and vertical layers were tested among each other with regard to their relative species abundance. Significant differences were found between the upper 60 m layer of the open sea, the upper 60 m layer of the closed pack-ice and the so called transitional zone. Species richness and diversity was lowest directly under the closed pack-ice. Abundance and biomass was highest in the surface layer of the open water, while both variablès decreased dramatically under the ice. Copepods dominated numerically in open water, while salps dominated in biomass. Euphausia superba and Thysanoessa macrura were the dominant species in the upper water column of the closed pack-ice zone. Krill was the only species with increasing abundance in the sub-ice area and a dominance in biomass of more than 91% demonstrated its unique importance for the sub-ice habitat.Data presented here were collected during the European Polarstern Study (EPOS) sponsored by the European Science Foundation  相似文献

Capelin (Mallotus villosus) displays alternative reproductive modes throughout its circumpolar distribution. This predicts divergent thermohaline tolerance of eggs because they are incubated in either a steady offshore or variable intertidal environment. We investigate herein thermohaline tolerance of eggs from the offshore spawning Barents Sea capelin. Subsequently, we compare our data with those previously published on other offshore and intertidal spawning capelin populations across the Northeast Atlantic Ocean, with the aim of determining possible patterns in the thermohaline tolerance of eggs from the alternative reproductive modes. In a 2?×?4 factorial design various combinations of salinities and temperatures had only negligible effect on the survival of eggs until first hatch. The embryonic development rate from fertilisation until first hatch across populations and between the two reproductive modes suggested non-local thermohaline tolerance towards the physical factors during development. Finally, no differences were observed in salinity tolerance from fertilisation to first hatch between populations representing different reproductive modes. The present findings demonstrate wide thermohaline tolerance of capelin eggs regardless of population origin and reproductive mode.  相似文献

Data on the spatial-bathymetric distribution and the size-weight composition of the sea raven Hemitripterus villosus in Pacific waters off the northern Kuril Islands and southeastern Kamchatka are provided. This representative of the family Hemitripteridae is a comparatively scarce, large fish species (maximum length 75 cm, body weight 11.8 kg), which in the study period (1992–2002) was found practically everywhere at the site from 48°00′ to 52°00′ N in the depth interval of 83–496 m at near-bottom temperatures from ?1.2 to 3.5°C. However, during the year, the overwhelming majority of its individuals were recorded in two depth ranges—101–150 and 251–400 m, which is accounted for by seasonal changes in the habitation depths. With an increase in depth, the sizes of H. villosus increase in catches due to the fact that individuals with a body weight smaller than 1.7–1.9 kg reside mainly at depths of up to 300 m, and those with a body weight greater than 2.2–3.0 kg reside at larger depths. It is demonstrated that the occurrence and the amount of catches of H. villosus are subjected to some interannual, seasonal, and diurnal dynamics.  相似文献

Trans-Arctic dispersals and population and range expansions during the Pleistocene enhanced opportunities for evolutionary diversification and contributed to the process of speciation within the capelin, a northern marine-fish complex exhibiting a circumpolar distribution. Capelin is composed of four highly divergent and geographically discrete mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) clades (609 bp; cytochrome b). Two clades occur in the North Atlantic, one associated with Canadian Atlantic waters, including Hudson Bay, and the second distributed from West Greenland to the Barents Sea. Two additional clades occur in the Arctic and northeast Pacific Oceans, representing the most recent divergence within the capelin phylogenetic tree. Judged from mtDNA diversity, capelin populations comprising all clades experienced at least one demographic and spatial reduction-expansion episode during recent Pleistocene glaciations that imprinted their molecular architecture. The large contemporary populations in the northeast Pacific and Arctic Oceans exhibited significant genetic structure whereas no such structure was detected in the equally extensive North Atlantic clades. All clades are characterized by one or two prevalent mtDNA haplotypes distributed over the entire range of the clade. Assuming a Pacific ancestor for capelin, we infer that capelin dispersed on two separate occasions to the North Atlantic. A more recent event resulted in the isolation of eastern Pacific and Arctic clades, with the Arctic clade positioned for a potential third Atlantic invasion, as revealed by the presence of this clade in the Labrador Sea. The Labrador Sea is a potential contact zone for three of the four capelin clades.  相似文献

Habitat conservation, and hence conservation of biodiversity hinges on knowledge of the spatial distribution of habitats, not least those that are particularly valuable or vulnerable. In offshore Norway, benthic habitats are systematically surveyed and described by the national programme MAREANO (Marine AREAl database for NOrwegian waters). Benthic habitats and biotopes are defined in terms of the species composition of their epibenthic megafauna. Some habitats are of special conservation interest on account of their intrinsic value and/or vulnerability (e.g., long-lived species, rareness, to comply with international regulations such as OSPAR). In Norway, off Nordland and Troms, the following habitats of special interest can be found: Umbellula encrinus Stands, Radicipes sp. Meadows, Deep Sea Sponge Aggregations, Seapen and Burrowing Megafauna Communities, Hard Bottom Coral Gardens. In this paper, we used underwater video data collected within the MAREANO programme to define and describe benthic habitats and biotopes of special interest, and to map the geographic distribution thereof by means of habitat modelling. We first evaluated the community structure of each habitat in the list using a SIMPROF test. We determined that the class Deep Sea Sponge Aggregations, as defined by OSPAR, had to be split into at least three classes. We then re-defined seven new types of ecological features, including habitats and biotopes that were sufficiently homogeneous. Then we modelled the spatial distributions of these habitats and biotopes using Conditional Inference Forests. Since the purpose of the distribution maps is to support spatial planning we classified the heat maps using density thresholds. The accuracy of models ranged from fair to excellent. Hard Bottom Coral Gardens were the most rare habitat in terms of total area predicted (224 km2, 0.3% of the area modelled), closely followed by Radicipes Meadows (391 km2, 0.6%). Soft Bottom Demosponges (Geodid sponges and other taxa) represent the largest habitat, with a predicted area of 9288 km2 (14%). Distribution maps of classes defined by habitat-forming species (Hard Bottom Coral Gardens) were more reliable than those defined by a host of species, or where no single species was a clear habitat provider (e.g. Seapen and Burrowing Megafauna Communities). We also put forward that a scale of patchiness larger than the scale of observation, and homogeneity of the community both play a role in model performance, and hence in map usefulness. These along with density threshold values based on observed data should all be taken into account in marine classifications and habitat definitions.  相似文献
