Aggressive behaviour in both sexes of Sceloporus virgatus, S. undulatus consobrinus, and S. u. tristichus were compared by introducing a conspecific to a resident lizard in the field. Males of S. u. consobrinus exhibited high intensity aggression more commonly than did males of the other forms. Of the females, S. u. tristichus showed the greatest propensity for aggressive behaviour; S. u. consobrinus showed the least. In males, degree of aggression was correlated positively with degree of sexual dichromatism. The high degree of aggression in male S. u. consobrinus may be selectively advantageous because of (1) low density increasing space between females, (2) low density reducing selection against a relatively high frequency of violent fighting, and (3) high predation favouring lizards that do not leave their sites upon intrusion of another male. High aggression in female S. u. tristichus may be selectively advantageous because of (1) higher density leading to reduced food supply and fewer egg-laying sites, and (2) lower predation reducing selection against mobility and fighting in females.  相似文献

The signalling function of displays broadcast when animals are distant from conspecifics can be difficult to determine. I tested the extent to which visually transmitted broadcast displays given by free‐ranging territorial male collared lizards signalled same‐sex rivals or females. One test involved recording the frequency of broadcast displays, aggressive contests with rivals, and courtship encounters with females during ten reproductive seasons when local sex ratios varied markedly. The frequency of broadcast displays decreased as the ratio of male competitors to females increased. The frequency with which males initiated contests with rivals was not related to the ratio of competitors to females, whereas the frequency of courtship interactions decreased with sex ratio because there were fewer females to court. The behaviour of males that defended territories during two successive seasons showed a similar pattern. Broadcast display frequency was positively correlated with courtship frequency, but not with the frequency of contests with rivals. Lastly, individual males gave more broadcast displays during focal observations when they also engaged in courtship encounters with females than other observations when they engaged in aggressive conflicts with rival males. Although these results do not reject the possibility that broadcast displays may also signal male rivals, they support a major role of these displays in advertisement to females. © 2013 The Linnean Society of London  相似文献

Inbred and random-bred NMRI mice were treated with diethylstilbestrol (DES, 5 micrograms per day) or vehicle (olive oil) on Days 1-5 after birth. At the age of 8 wk, females were treated with saline or eCG and hCG to induce ovulation. Ova never occurred in the ampulla of the uterine tube of saline-treated, DES-treated females when these mice were not mated. After gonadotropin treatment, ova were found in the ampulla of all olive oil-treated females and in approximately 80% of DES-treated females. The number of ovulated ova was similar in both groups. Twenty percent of gonadotropin-treated, DES-treated females had ova in the ampulla and a vaginal plug after being caged with males but none became pregnant. Ovaries from inbred control or DES-treated females were grafted to the ovarian bursa of control or DES-treated ovariectomized hosts. DES-treated hosts, carrying control or DES-exposed ovaries, never became pregnant. Control females, with control ovaries or DES-exposed ovaries, became pregnant; pregnancy rate and litter size were similar for control mice regardless of whether they were supporting DES-exposed or control ovaries. Oocytes from ovaries exposed neonatally to DES can thus give rise to apparently normal offspring. The results also indicate DES-induced nonovarian disturbances, e.g. tubal and/or endometrial function, both of which are important for fertility. In the grafting experiments, a high mortality rate was found in inbred DES-exposed females caged with males. All deaths were associated with vaginal concrements (vaginal stones) and intestinal complications.  相似文献

Inbreeding generally reduces male mating activity such that inbred males are less successful in male-male competition. Inbred males can also have smaller accessory glands, transfer less sperm and produce sperm that are less motile, less viable or have a greater frequency of abnormalities, all of which can reduce the fertilization success and fitness of inbred males relative to outbred males. However, few studies have examined how male inbreeding status affects the fitness of females with whom they mate. In this study, we examine the effect of male inbreeding status (inbreeding coefficient f = 0.25 vs. f = 0) on the fecundity, adult longevity and the fate of eggs produced by outbred females in the seed-feeding beetle, Callosobruchus maculatus. Females mated to inbred males were less likely to lay eggs. Of those that laid eggs, females mated to inbred males laid 6-12% fewer eggs. Females mated to inbred males lived on average 5.4% longer than did females mated to outbred males, but this effect disappeared when lifetime fecundity was used as a covariate in the analysis. There was no effect of male inbreeding status on the proportion of a female's eggs that developed or hatched, and no evidence that inbred males produced smaller nuptial gifts. However, ejaculates of inbred males contained 17-33% fewer sperm, on average, than did ejaculates of outbred males. Our study demonstrates that mating with inbred males has significant direct consequences for the fitness of female C. maculatus, likely mediated by effects of inbreeding status on the number of sperm in male ejaculates. Direct effects of male inbreeding status on female fitness should be more widely considered in theoretical models and empirical studies of mate choice.  相似文献

A laboratory experiment was conducted by varying the undersurface area of nesting substratum and the number of females in an experimental tank to elucidate the determinants of the mating pattern in the stream goby, Rhinogobius sp. cross‐band type. Males with larger nests tended to attract two or more females to their nest in a tank. Moreover, males spawned simultaneously with multiple females and entire brood cannibalism by males was rarely observed under a female‐biased sex ratio. When males spawned with a single female with low fecundity, however, entire brood cannibalism occurred at a high frequency, suggesting that a male guarding a nest with fewer eggs consumes the brood. Therefore, spawning behaviour of females that leads to a large egg mass would decrease the risk of entire brood cannibalism. In this species, simultaneous spawning by multiple females in a nest serves as a female counter‐measure against entire brood cannibalism. These results suggest that a conflict of interest between the sexes through brood cannibalism is a major determinant of simultaneous spawning.  相似文献

This experiment was designed to study the long-term behavioural effects of gonadal hormone injections into domestic ducklings. Ten male and four female ducklings were injected daily from their 4th day onwards: the males with testosterone propionate and the females with oestradiol benzoate. Five males were injected for 40 days, the other ducklings (5♀ + 4♂) for 80 days. Behavioural effects of these treatments were assessed when the birds were six months old. Social displays were strongly inhibited in the injected males as compared with control birds but no general significant effect was observed for the aggressive and sexual behaviour. The inhibition of social displays is consistent with the view that these behaviour patterns are regulated by the pituitary-gonadal axis and the different levels at which the functional inhibition could have occured are discussed. Far fewer social displays were performed by the males presented with injected females which, on the other hand, showed less sexual behaviour than the control females. This supports the idea that the female plays an important part in the social display of ducks.  相似文献

In four large aviaries, we studied social assortment and reproductive behaviour of female brown-headed cowbirds housed with males differing in age class and in corresponding levels of intrasexual interaction. Juvenile and adult females resided with either (1) adult males, (2) juvenile males, (3) adult and juvenile males, or (4) no males. We observed social behaviour of males and females from September 1999 through to the 2000 breeding season. Throughout the year, males in the different conditions showed different levels of social interaction, with adult males being most engaged in male-male interactions and juvenile males being least engaged in male-male interactions. Females in the four conditions differed in their associations with males and with other females. In conditions with adult males, females spent more time near males, approached males more often, and associated with females less. During the breeding season, females in conditions with more adult males copulated more and produced more fertile and viable eggs. In the condition where females were housed with juvenile males, they copulated less, laid fewer eggs and destroyed more of their eggs. Results indicate that throughout the year, females are sensitive to male age and behaviour in their social group, and that this sensitivity can have reproductive consequences. Pairs of gerbils were observed in mixed-sex and single-sex encounters in a neutral arena using a round-robin technique: various acts and postures were described and their frequency analysed. In single-sex encounters' males showed more social investigation, footstomping and marking while females engaged more frequently in jumping, grooming and chewing. Both sexes showed comparable levels of agonistic behaviour. In mixed-sex encounters, agonistic behaviour was markedly increased due to the aggressiveness of the females, usually in response to sexual investigation by the male. Males never attacked females. High levels of footstomping and marking with the ventral scent gland were characteristic of males in the presence of unreceptive females. Lordosis was only observed in three out of one hundred tests.  相似文献

There is currently a gap in sexual selection theory about how much the environment drives female mating decisions. We present field data that suggest that female sexual behaviour in the damselfly Calopteryx haemorrhoidalis is influenced by parasite burden. Male wing pigmentation in Calopteryx is a sexually selected trait that signals a male's ability to cope with eugregarine parasites (an intestinal parasite that feeds on the adult's ingested food). Because adult C. haemorrhoidalis females also show wing pigmentation, we examined whether this trait is similarly influenced by parasite burden and whether it may signal the female's reproductive value. MaleC. haemorrhoidalis defend riverine substrates that females use for oviposition. After copulation and during oviposition, females are guarded by the copulating male against intruder males. Alternatively, females may avoid mating and ‘steal’ an oviposition site within a male's territory. In the present study, we found that the amount of female wing pigmentation was negatively correlated with the number of eugregarines present. Females with more parasites produced fewer eggs, survived fewer days, spent less time during courtship, ‘inspected’ fewer males before mating, had a lower mating success, were guarded for less time during oviposition and engaged in fewer ‘stealing’ events during oviposition. The reduced egg production and survival of heavily infected females may result from eugregarine depletion of the females' consumed food reserves. Thus, to offset reduced longevity, heavily infected females may accept a mating more rapidly and mate with fewer males. ‘Stealing’ behaviour may be related to the female's differential use of sperm from some males, particularly high-quality males. Interestingly, males that mated with low-pigmented females showed greater variance in wing pigmentation than did males that mated with high-pigmented females. Possibly, female wing pigmentation may signal a female's reproductive value, which provides females with longer mate-guarding episodes and reduced interference from intruder males. This study points out one possible constraint, intestine parasites, that females may face during mating decisions. Because females in bad condition mate with males in both good and bad condition, this constraint may be pervasive enough to weaken the intensity of selection for a male sexually selected trait, wing pigmentation, and help to maintain its variation in phenotypic expression. The magnitude of inbreeding depression is often larger in traits closely related to fitness, such as survival and fecundity, compared to morphological traits. Reproductive behaviour is also closely associated with fitness, and therefore expected to show strong inbreeding depression. Despite this, little is known about how reproductive behaviour is affected by inbreeding. Here we show that one generation of full‐sib mating results in a decrease in male reproductive performance in the least killifish (Heterandria formosa). Inbred males performed less gonopodial thrusts and thrust attempts than outbred males (δ = 0.38). We show that this behaviour is closely linked with fitness as gonopodial performance correlates with paternity success. Other traits that show inbreeding depression are offspring viability (δ = 0.06) and maturation time of males (δ = 0.19) and females (δ = 0.14). Outbred matings produced a female biased sex ratio whereas inbred matings produced an even sex ratio.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. Adult males of the two-spot ladybird beetle, Adalia bipunctata , did not show a functional response to increase in aphid abundance and consumed markedly fewer aphids than do the females.
2. At high densities of prey, females spent more time in area-restricted search than when prey was scarce. Males were always less active than females and they did not respond to an increase in prey abundance by a change in searching behaviour.
3. After a brief encounter with a female, a male showed area-restricted searching behaviour. This behaviour occurred in response to encountering a female's elytra and in particular to a chloroform-soluble component (sex pheromone) present on or in the elytra.
4. Males needed to encounter a female in order to respond to her presence, which indicated the pheromone is a contact pheromone.
5. The searching behaviour of males appeared to be mainly directed towards locating females; that of females towards locating aphids. This difference between the sexes should be taken into account when quantifying the predatory response of ladybirds to aphid abundance in the field.  相似文献

Courtship feeding in insects is often strongly correlated with insemination duration and therefore provides a potential postcopulatory episode of sexual selection. We tested whether courtship feeding and other courtship traits in the black-horned tree cricket Oecanthus nigricornis showed sufficient consistency potentially to respond to sexual selection by testing whether they differed significantly among males. Duration of courtship feeding differed among males when measured repeatedly and this caused significant differences in the duration of spermatophore attachment, a trait that determines the maximum duration of insemination and thus has important fitness consequences in crickets. We also partitioned variance in courtship behaviour between the sexes to test whether differences in courtship behaviour were attributable primarily to males, females or both sexes. Duration of spermatophore attachment was controlled by females and therefore represents a mechanism of female mate choice. Significant variation in duration of spermatophore attachment was associated with differences between individuals of both sexes. Differences among males indicate that females agree in their preference of certain males whereas differences among females indicate that females differ in their receptivity to postcopulatory courtship and insemination. The fact that differences among males in duration of spermatophore attachment were due to significant differences solely in the period of courtship feeding indicates that postcopulatory female choice was mediated through courtship feeding. Whether males manipulate female choices by allocating more or fewer resources requires further testing, but we found that males court some females more vigorously than others after females dismount. The number of previous mates had opposite effects on the duration of courtship feeding for the sexes, decreasing it for males but increasing it for females, and we discuss the possible causes of these results.  相似文献

The evolutionary basis for female mate choice in lek mating systems has been a common subject of research in animal behaviour. Because males apparently provide only gametes to females in lekking species, most research has focused on possible indirect (genetic) benefits that females might gain by discriminating among males. Despite the emphasis on indirect benefits, it has been recognized that females in non-resource-based systems such as leks could potentially gain direct benefits via mate choice if males varied in fertilization abilities, for example. Previous evidence has shown that females of a lekking Hawaiian Drosophila, D. grimshawi, vary in fecundity when mated to certain males, and that females possess preferences for vigorously courting males. This study tests the hypothesis that D. grimshawi females gain direct benefits by preferentially mating with more sexually vigorous males. Male courtship vigour (performance of wing and head-under-wing displays) and the consequences of female choice on offspring production were evaluated separately using different females. Unexpectedly, matings involving more vigorously courting males resulted in fewer offspring being produced. Reduced offspring number resulted because females laid fewer eggs when mating with males having greater courtship success. These results are discussed in light of sexual conflict and possible multiple mating by females. Females also demonstrated considerable variation in mating behaviour and behavioural variation was correlated with mating benefits. Copyright 2003 The Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour. Inbred CFY male and female rats were given subcutaneous injections of carbon tetrachloride solution in sunflower oil for 12 weeks. Cytophotometric DNA determination was made on liver cell nuclei. Cell nuclei from normal liver showed modal peak of DNA in the diploid range. In the treated animals there were modal peaks of DNA in diploid and tetraploid regions as well as remarkable numbers of over-tetraploid nuclei. The hepatic lesions classified histologically were more severe in males than in females. The ploidy distributions were not related to the histopathological features and sex.  相似文献

The copulatory behaviour of male wild Norway rats (Rattus norvegicus) exposed individually to females in hormone-induced oestrus is characterized by fewer mounts and intromissions per ejaculatory series, shorter ejaculation latencies, and longer ejaculatory clasps than the copulatory behaviour of domestic males. Competition between wild and domestic males tested simultaneously in pairs produced only minor changes in copulatory behaviour. The reproductive success of wild and domestic male pairs simultaneously exposed to naturally cycling females was nearly equal in both the laboratory and an outdoor enclosure. Genotype of the female had little effect on male copulatory behaviour. The copulatory behaviour of sexually naive and experienced domestic rats did not differ. However, most sexually naive wild males failed to exhibit copulatory behaviour under the test conditions employed.  相似文献

Breeding behaviour and spermatogenesis of all males in a population of pied flycatchers, Ficedula hypoleuca, were experimentally prolonged by long-acting testosterone. The behaviour of these birds was compared with that of birds from an untreated population and a population where the males were given the vehicle only. The testosterone treatment prolonged territorial behaviour, and a higher percentage of nests without a feeding male during the nestling period was found in the experimental area. The proportion of polygamous males did not however differ between the experimental and control areas. The feeding activity of those testosterone-treated males returning to their home territories was markedly depressed. The female of such a pair did not compensate for the male's low feeding activity, but fed the nestlings as she would have done with a normal untreated male at the nest. On the other hand, females without a male present during the nestling period compensated for their mates' absence by increasing their own feeding frequency. It was also shown that the song of the male pied flycatcher is dependent upon androgens. The testosterone-treated males produced fewer fledglings than the control males.  相似文献

Abstract  The effects of domestication and irradiation on the mating behaviour of males of Bactrocera tryoni (Froggatt) (Diptera: Tephritidae) were investigated by caging wild, laboratory-domesticated and sterile (laboratory-domesticated, gamma-irradiated) males with wild females. Mating behaviour of mass-reared males was different from that of wild males, although behaviour of wild and sterile males was similar. Mass-reared males engaged in mounting of other males much more frequently than wild and sterile males, and began calling significantly earlier before darkness. Unnatural selection pressures imposed in mass-rearing conditions may explain these changes in mass-reared male behaviour. Male calling did not appear to be associated with female choice of mating partners, although this does not exclude the possibility that calling is a cue used by females to discriminate among mating partners. Despite differences in behaviour, frequency of successful copulations and mating success were similar among wild, mass-reared and sterile males.  相似文献

A chemical attractive to their males is emitted by females of Heterodera rostochiensis and H. schachtii. The attraction is evident in agar plates when the females have been killed or removed from the agar, and on 3 mm. thick agar it takes more than 15 min. at 20° C. to diffuse sufficiently to be perceptible to males 5 mm. from the females. The perception is gustatory and seems to elicit klinokinetic aggregation behaviour and klinotaxic orientation. The males respond to a decrease in stimulation by stopping, followed by either a reversal and turn, or a swing and turn. Fatigue of the receptors, leading to loss of acuity of perception, occurs at greater concentrations of the attractant and decreases the frequency of turning. Then the intensity of turning increases and the approach to the female is less well orientated. Females of H. schachtii secreted a less labile or more concentrated attractant; thus their males were more frequently less well orientated and removal of the females caused more direct attraction. Male behaviour was efficient enough to ensure mating even of isolated females.  相似文献

Changes in ultrastructure of the posterior lobe pituicytes during six phases (Spring premigratory, Spring postmigratory, breeding, moulting, Fall premigratory and Fall postmigratory) of the annual life cycle of the migratory Canada goose, were studied. Pituicyte nuclear volume in females was significantly greater than that in males during the Spring premigratory and moulting phases. In the Fall postmigratory phase, nuclear volume in males was greater than that in females. During Spring premigratory phase, the axonal endings in males contained fewer neurosecretory granules (NSG) than those in the Fall postmigratory phase. In females, however, the number of NSG was relatively more than that in males in the Spring premigratory phase but fewer in the moulting phase. Nuclear volume is correlated with pituicyte function in releasing NSG containing arginine vasotocin (AVT) from axonal endings. The significance of AVT release is discussed in relation to initiation of reproductive and migratory behaviour, and to osmotic and metabolic regulation.  相似文献

This paper examines the effects of prior sexual experience and of female receptivity on the probability that male guppies will court females with high or low intensity displays or attempt rape. There were no differences in behaviour between males with a history of high copulation success and those with low copulation success. Males with receptive females exhibited higher levels of high intensity displays and fewer rape attempts than males with unreceptive females, regardless of prior experience. The results are discussed in terms of sexual selection and the selective advantage of behavioural plasticity in which different sexual behaviour patterns are chosen with respect to the probability of a successful mating at a given time.  相似文献
