Tooth wear and the position of the mental foramen   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Variation in the position of the mental foramen with respect to the teeth ("apparent" position) seems to be associated with race, but in the determination of this position, factors which affect the disposition of the teeth plainly have a bearing on the results. The apparent position was investigated in a sample of southern Chinese skulls of known age which were classified by the degree of tooth wear. Controlling for "true" position and size of the mandible, a highly significant correlation between wear and position was found, age and tooth size having no significant contribution as additional explanatory variables. The effect of tooth wear on the apparent position of the foramen may partly explain racial variation.  相似文献

The mandibular nerve is a sensory and motor nerve that innervates the muscles of mastication, the lower dentition, and the lower lip and surrounding structures. Although this nerve contains both efferent and afferent fibers, the mental nerve, a terminal branch of the mandibular nerve, is a strictly sensory nerve that exits the mental foramen and innervates the lower lip, the skin overlaying the mandible, and the oral mucosa around the mandible. Osteological foramina are often used as proxies for nerve cross section area and they often correlate well with some aspect of a primate's ecology (e.g., optic foramen and visual acuity). The primary objective of this study is to explore the correlation between the mental foramen and dietary preference among primates. The mental foramen of 40 primate species (n = 180) was measured from 3‐D surface models of the mandible. Both conventional and phylogenetic tests indicate that although frugivores have larger mental foramina than folivores, the differences were not significant. These results show that while structures like the infraorbital foramen correlate well with diet and touch sensitivity, the mental foramen does not. Since the nineteenth century, researchers have noted that Neandertal and modern human adults differ in mental foramen position, although the ontogenetic changes in the position of this feature have only recently come under the scrutiny of paleoanthropologists. Research on mental foramen position has focused on whether this feature is inferior to a particular tooth. However, tooth position may not be a reliable indicator of mental foramen position because of variability in tooth size within and between taxa and during eruption events. As opposed to observing the mental foramen with respect to the postcanine teeth, we examined linear distances from the mental foramen to other mandibular landmarks. Modern human adults may appear truncated, or paedomorphic, in mental foramen position with respect to Neandertal adults. However, infants of the two taxa differ substantially in anterior mandibular form. The initial differences in the shape of the mental region may be related to the embryological position of the mental foramen in modern humans and its role in the development of the mental trigone. The shape changes that accrue thereafter, possibly from faster mandibular growth rates in Neandertals, further distinguish the adults from one another. Although mandibular shape differences exist from early infancy onwards, adults of the two taxa are broadly similar in bi-mental foramen breadth with respect to mandibular size. For this reason, qualitative assessments of mental foramen position may provide less taxonomic information than previously thought.  相似文献

Comprehensive studies of the human skeletal features and variations between and within populations are beneficial both for clinical applications and determination of racial characteristics of populations. The aim of this study was to examine the location and anthropometric characteristics of the mental foramen in 36 adult male mandibles of the Late Byzantine period. The results demonstrated that the most common position of the mental foramen was in line with the longitudinal axis of the second premolar (50% right side; 47% left side) followed by a location between the first and second premolars (33% right side; 36% left side). When compared with the results of previous similar studies, the results obtained in the present study suggest that traits such as the localization of mental foramen may not only differ between populations of different geographic environment but also within the inhabitants of the same geography.  相似文献

The absence of the mental foramen was investigated in 1,435 dry human mandibles (2,870 sides). The foramen was absent twice in the right side (0.06%) and once in the left side (0.03%). The meaning of this anatomical variation was commented.  相似文献

 Lectins with different sugar specificities and binding to phagosome-lysosome systems as well as cell surface constituents were used to study glycoconjugate variation throughout culture and clonal life in Paramecium primaurelia, particularly during the transition period from logarithmic to stationary growth phase and in relation to clonal decline, respectively. These lectins include Griffonia simplicifolia agglutinin II (GS II), Ricinus communis agglutinin (RCA120), Arachis hypogea agglutinin (PNA), succinyl concanavalin A (succinyl-con A), and Triticum vulgaris agglutinin (WGA). The labeling obtained varies both according to the lectin used and to the culture and clonal age of the cells. Negative results were obtained in logarithmic growth phase cells and in clonal young cells by using lectin GS II. Conversely, lectins RCA120 and PNA bind to the cell surface, the oral region as well as cilia, and do not undergo modifications with culture or clonal age and after permeabilization. WGA binds to constituents of the cell surface, trichocyst tips, food vacuoles, the oral region, and cilia but the extent of labeling decreases as culture age increases; during clonal decline, cells show the same labeling pattern as starved cells. Finally, the lectin succinyl-con A shows a large amount of binding sites on the cell surface, on trichocyst tips, and in the oral region of logarithmic-phase cells, whereas the number of sites decreases in late stationary phase. The data obtained partly differ from those reported in the literature and the differences can be attributed to the culture conditions and species examined. Nevertheless, the assumption that a rearrangement of some glycoconjugates of membrane throughout culture and clonal life of Paramecium is confirmed. Accepted: 25 November 1996  相似文献

Objective: The goal was to describe the lipid profile and insulin changes seen in obese children and adolescents at different stages of puberty. Research Methods and Procedures: A cross‐sectional study was conducted by chart review of 181 obese (BMI > 95th) children and adolescents 5 to 17 years of age, who were referred to the Center for Atherosclerosis Prevention for cardiovascular risk reduction from January 2003 through December 2003. Results: Eighty (44.2%) subjects were <12 years of age, and 101 (55.8%) were ≥12 years. Severity of obesity as expressed by BMI standard deviation score did not differ between these age groups. A significant difference with lower serum levels of total cholesterol, non‐high‐density lipoprotein cholesterol, low‐density lipoprotein cholesterol, and high‐density lipoprotein cholesterol was seen with older age and with advancing sexual maturity rating. Triglycerides, very‐low‐density lipoprotein cholesterol, and lipoprotein(a) levels remained elevated across age and pubertal stages. Insulin levels and insulin resistance as expressed by homeostasis model assessment were significantly higher with older age. Similar trends were observed both in obese boys and obese girls during puberty. Discussion: The most striking findings of this study are that in the 5‐ to 17‐year‐old obese population, the combination of elevated triglycerides and very‐low‐density lipoprotein cholesterol and low high‐density lipoprotein cholesterol levels place them at greater cardiovascular risk than their non‐obese peers, even when the changing patterns of lipids and lipoproteins seen during pubertal maturation are accounted for.  相似文献

In this paper the problem of entropy changes in a nerve fibre when an action potential is taking place is analysed. A probability field associated with the ionic distribution in the axoplasma and the extracellular space is defined. The total variation of its entropy can be computed on the basis of Gibbs' distribution of ions in the system. The final formula deduced for the entropy variation allows computations based on experimental data for the giant axon and the myelinated fibre. It represents at the same time a derivation of Brillouin's neguentropy principle of information in the particular case of the nerve.  相似文献

We previously reported the presence of stationary negative potentials (N3, N6, N9) over the arm ipsilateral to the side of median nerve stimulation. In this study, we examined the effect of different arm positions upon these stationary peaks in 12 normal subjects. When arm position was changed from elbow extended to elbow flexed 90°, we recorded a new negative peak, N4. The peak latency of N4 corresponded to the traveling impulse reaching the distal biceps brachii. With the elbow flexed, N3, N6 and N9 peak latencies significantly shortened compared to those recorded with the arm in the usual elbow extended position. In contrast, with the arm abducted at the shoulder, N6 and N9 latencies were significantly prolonged while N3 remained unchanged. Corresponding latency shifts were also observed in the bipolarly recorded traveling impulse.We consider 2 possible factors for N4 enhancement by elbow flexion. One is the change in conducting volume surrounding the nerve, i.e., increased muscle bulk of biceps brachii. The other is the change in axial orientation of the propagating nerve impulse by 90°. We also propose that the latency shifts of the stationary potential as well as of a travelling wave can be attributed primarily to relaxation or stretching of the nerve trunk with change in arm position.  相似文献
