The size of embryos at various stages of development was determined in three species of crocodilian ( Alligator mississippiensis, Crocodylus johnstoni and C. porosus). Various morphometric measurements were taken of embryos throughout development and were described for each stage of development. Increase in size from stage to stage was faster in A. mississippiensis than in C. porosus and C. johnstoni. Hatchlings of A. mississippiensis were large in length but light in mass compared with the hatchlings of C. johnstoni and C. porosus which were heavier per unit length. These morphometric parameters can be used to determine the stage of embryonic development by size. The use of principle component analysis improves this technique further by dampening any anomalous data points.
The rate of embryonic growth in A. mississippiensis appeared to be under greater genetic control than in the two species of Crocodylus. The evolutionary advantages of this phenomenon probably relate to the biology of A. mississippiensis. Due to the northerly range of this species it is advantageous for alligators to hatch as soon as possible, as large as possible, to maximize the period prior to winter hibernation and reduce predation. Tropical crocodiles have fewer selection pressures for rapid development and have slower rates of embryonic growth. Genetic aspects of crocodilian embryonic development have been largely ignored but may help explain some aspects of crocodilian growth under farming conditions.  相似文献

There are many large, easy‐to‐observe anseriform birds (ducks, geese, and swans) in northern Australia and New Guinea and they often gather in large numbers. Yet, the structure of their populations and their regional movements are poorly understood. Lack of understanding of population structure limits our capacity to understand source‐sink dynamics relevant to their conservation or assess risks associated with avian‐borne pathogens, in particular, avian influenza for which waterfowl are the main reservoir species. We set out to assess present‐day genetic connectivity between populations of two widely distributed waterfowl in the Australo‐Papuan tropics, magpie goose Anseranas semipalmata (Latham, 1798) and wandering whistling‐duck Dendrocygna arcuata (Horsfield, 1824). Microsatellite data were obtained from 237 magpie geese and 64 wandering whistling‐duck. Samples were collected across northern Australia, and at one site each in New Guinea and Timor Leste. In the wandering whistling‐duck, genetic diversity was significantly apportioned by region and sampling location. For this species, the best model of population structure was New Guinea as the source population for all other populations. One remarkable result for this species was genetic separation of two flocks sampled contemporaneously on Cape York Peninsula only a few kilometers apart. In contrast, evidence for population structure was much weaker in the magpie goose, and Cape York as the source population provided the best fit to the observed structure. The fine scale genetic structure observed in wandering whistling‐duck and magpie goose is consistent with earlier suggestions that the west‐coast of Cape York Peninsula is a flyway for Australo‐Papuan anseriforms between Australia and New Guinea across Torres Strait.  相似文献

Radiotelemetry was used from June 1986 through February 1987 to observe the movements of four Nile crocodiles, Crocodylus niloticus Laurenti, introduced into a resident population at Lake Ngezi, Zimbabwe. The use of surgically-implanted transmitters was the first application of this technique on wild Nile crocodiles. A subadult female (194 cm TL, 35 kg) and two males (256 cm, 81 kg; 348 cm, 260 kg) wandered throughout the area. A large female (297 cm, 149 kg) moved > 12 km from her point of release to Ngezi River and nested; she guarded the nest site through 21 January 1987 when she moved the hatchlings to a nearby creche. A juvenile crocodile (120 cm TL, 8 kg) captured in Lake Ngezi was also monitored from June 1986 to February 1987. It traversed some 15 km of the shoreline of Lake Ngezi and moved as much as 10 km overnight. Evidence is presented that the translocated crocodiles, excluding the nesting female, exhibited exploratory behaviour throughout the nine-month observation period, and did not establish home ranges per se.  相似文献

The Red-billed Quelea Quelea quelea has been steadily expanding its range into the Western Cape province. The earliest record is of a vagrant in 1946. The next record came from 1986 in the Karoo and since 1997 there have been annual reports of the species in the province. It has become resident in the Karoo, especially in the Beaufort West to Leeu Gamka area. In April and May 2007 there was an invasion of Red-billed Queleas in the Western Cape province, particularly on the Cape Peninsula and Overberg region. Sixty-eight percent of records were within 5 km of the coast, over a stretch of 1 000 km of coastline. Adult males in breeding plumage were frequently observed, indicating that this irruption was not limited to post-juvenile dispersal. This influx was not repeated in 2008, but from April 2008 to January 2009, monthly records of queleas were higher than the combined monthly totals in years prior to the influx. The increasing occurrence of queleas in the Western Cape province is a potential threat to a major wheat-producing area and continued monitoring is required.  相似文献

The chromosomes of Crocodylus porosus, C. johnstoni and Caiman crocodilus have been analysed using C, G and N-banding techniques and the in situ hybridization of 18S+26S rRNA cistrons derived from Xenopus. It is clear that in addition to the gross structural changes (robertsonian rearrangements and pericentric inversions) which are known to distinguish these crocodiles, numerous other modes of repatterning have occurred. These involved both the heterochromatic and euchromatic portions of the genome. They appear to be associated with the gross structural changes which have been established, and involve two distinct forms of chromatin transformation. In addition, the in situ hybridization of 18S+26S rRNA cistrons onto these crocodilian chromosomes has localized the site of nucleolus organizer activity to the C-band positive G-band negative secondary constrictions present in all three species. The significance of these results is discussed.  相似文献

Underhill, L.G. & Underhill, G.D. 1997. Primary moult, mass and movements of the Rock Pigeon Columba guinea in the Western Cape, South Africa. Ostrich 68 (24): 86–89.

Rock Pigeons Columba guinea in the Western Cape, South Africa, take an estimated 7.2 months to complete primary moult. The mean starting and completion dates are 26 December and 2 August, with 95% of birds starting and completing within two months of these dates. The overall mean mass was 344 g, but birds were heaviest in winter (356 g) and lightest in spring and summer (334 g). Twenty-four of 48 recoveries of Rock Pigeons ringed in the Western Cape were more than 2 km from the ringing site. These recoveries demonstrate movements of Rock Pigeons between the mountains of the Cape Peninsula and the wheat-growing areas to the northeast.  相似文献

Translocation of individual carnivores has been a standard management tool for decades in North America and southern Africa in response to livestock depredation and other conflict behaviours. As carnivore populations across Europe begin to increase it is expected that management problems will also increase. Before translocation becomes established as a management tool in Europe its success needs to be reviewed. In general, there has been very little follow-up of translocated animals. Almost no data exist on the subsequent levels of damage after translocation. Large carnivores have shown a consistent ability to return to the site of capture over distances of up to 400 km. Even those individuals that do not succeed in returning home roam over very large distances, best measured in units of hundreds of kilometres. Very few individuals remain at the release sites. Survival of translocated animals has occasionally been shown to be poor, often as a result of the large movements. In general, there needs to be a large area (hundreds or thousands of square kilometres) without conflict potential where the individuals can be released for the strategy to work. When such areas are not available, management efforts should concentrate on reducing conflict potential, or, where this is not practical, lethal control. This revised version was published online in November 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The islands of Torres Strait occupy a shallow area of submerged continental shelf narrowly separating Cape York Peninsula, Australia, from New Guinea. The human history of Torres Strait is unique with respect to mainland northern Australia. Island vegetation, however, exhibits a strong affinity with the environments of the western lowlands regions of Cape York Peninsula and with the vegetation of seasonal tropical Australia in general. Cape York Peninsula is both climatically and biologically diverse, yet few pollen studies have been carried out in its seasonally tropical environments. A summary presentation of palynological results, tracing the nature of vegetation change in Torres Strait, offers a possible framework for vegetation changes in similar environments on mainland Australia and also provides an opportunity to explore the relationship between Quaternary change in humid-tropical Australian environments and their seasonal-tropical counterparts.Six pollen records from Torres Strait provide evidence of vegetation change and fire history over approximately the last 8000 years. Near-shore sediments reveal a Holocene succession in vegetation incorporating lower-tidal mangrove, upper-tidal mangrove, saltmarsh and freshwater swamp communities. Extensive stable mangrove communities dominated coastal Torres Strait between approximately 6000 and 3000 radiocarbon years before present (yr BP). Inland, the strongest Myrtaceae-forest and rainforest representation occurs around the mid-Holocene only to be replaced by open sclerophyll woodlands, as tree density and diversity decline in the last 3000 years. The development of continuous island freshwater swamp conditions, at the coast and inland, is similarly restricted to the late Holocene (c. 2600 yr BP) and fire, as a prominent feature in the Torres Strait environment, is also a relatively recent phenomenon. Comparisons with regional mainland Australian palynological records reveal a degree of consistency in results from Torres Strait suggesting a similarity in late Quaternary trends through Australian humid and seasonally tropical environments. A number of differences, however, are also apparent, highlighting a degree of diversity which warrants further attention.  相似文献

Summary Genetic analysis of individual origins works best with populations that are genetically distinct but which exchange a high rate of immigrants, conditions that don’t normally coexist since immigration acts to prevent the accumulation of genetic differences. We provide empirical results from a newly constructed habitat linkage to illustrate the unique suitability of such analysis to monitoring the re‐establishment of connections between previously isolated populations. Donaghy’s Corridor links a previously isolated 498 ha fragment of rainforest to an adjacent 80 000 ha of intact forest. Starting in the final year of the planting programme that established the corridor, we trapped two species of native small mammals, the Bush Rat (Rattus fuscipes) and the Cape York Rat (Rattus leucopus), within and nearby the linkage. We used genetic data from ear clippings to determine which side of the corridor individual animals originated from, and by comparing this information to trap locations, we identified 16 long‐distance movements through the corridor. As genetic analysis of origins allowed movements to be detected from a single capture event and as it reflected movement since birth, this approach yielded considerably more data than capture records alone. The combination of movement and capture records allowed species‐specific assessment of corridor function, revealing that the use and occupation of the corridor was higher for Bush Rat than for Cape York Rat and was neither symmetrical nor uniform. Long‐distance movements through the corridor were most common immediately after habitat restoration, dropping off as the reconstructed habitat was colonized.  相似文献

Pringle, J. S. & Cooper, J. 1977. Wader populations (Charadrii) of the marine littoral of the Cape Peninsula, South Africa. Ostrich 48: 98–105.

Waders (Charadrii) were counted regularly on two stretches of coastline, totalling 5,6 km, on the Cape Peninsula from January 1975 to July 1976. Eight Palaearctic species and seven indigenous species were observed. Arrival of migrants extended from mid-August to January. Autumn departure of Curlew Sandpipers Calidris ferruginea occurred approximately six weeks before departure of Sanderlings C. albu. No overwintering populations of migrant waders were observed. Information is presented which suggests that overwintering Turnstones Arenaria interpres, but not Sanderlings, Maycongregate at a sheltered coastal wetland. Observations of marked birds suggest that individual Sanderlings regularly use particular feeding localities. Populations of indigenous waders showed little seasonal variation in numbers, Flocking was observed in winter.  相似文献

There are few studies of medium‐term, quantitative changes in faunal communities in the southern hemisphere. The linear nature of coastlines makes populations of coastal birds easy to count. Repeat surveys of 278 km of coastline in three regions of the Western Cape, South Africa show marked differences in coastal bird community structure over the last 30 years, despite limited human impacts on coastal habitats (mainly increased human disturbance). The total number of birds has not changed, but species richness increased following colonization of the coast by Egyptian geese (Alopochen aegyptiaca, Anatidae) and three species of ibises (Threskiornithidae). Biomass also increased due to greater numbers of large‐bodied birds. Contrary to the prediction that large birds are more susceptible to human disturbance, most small birds decreased in abundance. Among waders that breed along the coastline, numbers of African oystercatchers (Haematopus moquini, Haematopodidae) doubled, linked to increased food availability following invasions by alien mussels (Mytilidae). By comparison, numbers of white‐fronted plovers (Charadrius marginatus, Charadriidae) decreased by 37% (59% close to Cape Town), at least in part as a result of increasing human disturbance. The greatest decreases occurred among migrant waders (Scolopacidae and Charadriidae), with numbers of the four most abundant species falling by >50%, and both common Calidris species by >90%. Migrant wader populations decreased in all three regions, irrespective of whether surveys were in protected areas or not, suggesting that factors outside the region are driving these trends. Some species may have decreased due to changes in their preferred wintering areas, but others probably reflect population decreases, confirming the generally poor conservation status of migrant waterbirds worldwide.  相似文献

Neotaphonomic studies have determined the patterns of bone damage created by larger mammalian carnivores when consuming mammalian carcasses. Typically, mammalian carnivores gnaw and break bones to various degrees in order to access marrow, grease, and brain tissue. In contrast, crocodiles attempt to swallow whole parts of mammal carcasses, inflicting in the process tooth marks and other feeding traces on some of the bones they are unable to ingest. Although crocodiles are major predators of larger mammals along the margins of protected tropical rivers and lakes, their feeding traces on bone have received little systematic attention in neotaphonomic research. We present diagnostic characteristics of Crocodylus niloticus damage to uningested mammal bones resulting from a series of controlled observations of captive crocodile feeding. The resulting bone assemblages are composed of primarily complete elements from articulating units, some of which bear an extremely high density of shallow to deep, transversely to obliquely oriented tooth scores over often large areas of the bone, along with shallow to deep pits and punctures. Some of the tooth marks (bisected pits and punctures, hook scores) have a distinctive morphology we have not observed to be produced by mammalian carnivores. The assemblages are also characterized by the retention of both low- and high-density bone portions, an absence of gross gnawing, and minimal fragmentation. Together, the damage characteristics associated with feeding by crocodiles are highly distinctive from those produced by mammalian carnivores. Modern surface bone assemblages along the Grumeti River in Tanzania's Serengeti National Park contain a mixture of specimens bearing damage characteristic of crocodiles and mammalian carnivores. Comparison of Plio-Pleistocene fossil bones from Olduvai Gorge, Tanzania, to bones damaged by captive and free-ranging Nile crocodiles reveals direct evidence of fossil crocodilian feeding from larger mammal bones associated with Oldowan stone artifacts.  相似文献

Understanding the nature of the interactions between humans and wildlife is of vital importance for conflict mitigation. We equipped five leopards with GPS-collars in Maharashtra (4) and Himachal Pradesh (1), India, to study movement patterns in human-dominated landscapes outside protected areas. An adult male and an adult female were both translocated 52 km, and exhibited extensive, and directional, post release movements (straight line movements: male  = 89 km in 37 days, female  = 45 km in 5 months), until they settled in home ranges of 42 km2 (male) and 65 km2 (female). The three other leopards, two adult females and a young male were released close to their capture sites and used small home ranges of 8 km2 (male), 11 km2 and 15 km2 (females). Movement patterns were markedly nocturnal, with hourly step lengths averaging 339±9.5 m (SE) during night and 60±4.1 m during day, and night locations were significantly closer to human settlements than day locations. However, more nocturnal movements were observed among those three living in the areas with high human population densities. These visited houses regularly at nighttime (20% of locations <25 m from houses), but rarely during day (<1%). One leopard living in a sparsely populated area avoided human settlements both day and night. The small home ranges of the leopards indicate that anthropogenic food resources may be plentiful although wild prey is absent. The study provides clear insights into the ability of leopards to live and move in landscapes that are extremely modified by human activity.  相似文献

The early marine migratory behaviour of two populations of hatchery-reared Atlantic salmon Salmo salar was compared in a common-garden experiment. Post-smolts from a river in a long fjord (Laerdal River, 144 km from the open coastline, n = 79) and a short fjord (Flekke River, 20 km from the open coastline, n = 80) in western Norway were tagged with acoustic transmitters and released during the spring of 2005 and 2006 in the inner part of the Hardangerfjord system (Opo River mouth, 179 km from the open coastline). The migratory behaviour of the tagged fish was monitored by acoustic listening stations in the fjord system up to 167 km from the release site. The Laerdal fish began migrating before the Flekke fish and had higher progression rates in the middle part of the fjord system. A greater number of Laerdal fish was detected along the most direct migratory route and in the outermost part of the Hardangerfjord system, which is indicative of a higher survival. The results from this study demonstrate differences in early marine migratory behaviour between S. salar from two different stocks and suggest that the distance a S. salar population travels to reach the open coastline may influence its early marine migratory behaviour and performance. The selective pressures of marine predation and arrival time at feeding areas in the ocean may be stronger for stocks with a longer inshore migration, creating more efficient migrants over time.  相似文献

In northern Australia, the debris-feeding termite Amitermes laurensis builds tall, wedge-shaped mounds in the northern part of Cape York Peninsula and Arnhem Land, where their habitats are seasonally flooded, and small dome shaped mounds in the southeastern part of Cape York Peninsula, where their habitats are well-drained. Phylogeographic analyses were conducted in 238 individuals from 30 populations using the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase II (COII) gene. DNA sequences of 50 haplotypes were used to construct NJ, MP and ML trees. Phylogenetic trees for 16 Amitermes species showed monophyly of A. laurensis and the variation of A. laurensis mounds did not strongly correspond to the intraspecific phylogeny. It was observed that mounds with the same shape were constructed by phylogenetically different groups under similar environmental conditions and different mounds shapes were built by phylogenetically closely related groups under the different environmental conditions. Thus, phylogenetically close groups of A. laurensis, in different habitats, may adapt to environmental conditions by constructing different mound shapes. We also investigated the phylogeographic structure of A. laurensis. The significant positive correlation between genetic and geographic distances indicated isolation by distance, reflecting restricted dispersal ability of alates. Although the overall genetic structure of A. laurensis showed isolation by distance, we also identified two exceptions: (i) secondary contacts of genetically divergent lineages in southern Cape York Peninsula, and (ii) low genetic differences between geographically separated populations of Cape York Peninsula and Arnhem Land. Therefore, the phylogeography of A. laurensis may reflect continuous gene flow restricted to short distances and past changes of gene flow associated with the fluctuation of environmental conditions accompanying the changing sea levels in the Quaternary.  相似文献

Aerobic capacity (VO2max) of endothermic vertebrates is known to increase with exercise training, but this effect has not been found to-date in non-avian reptiles. We exercised juvenile estuarine crocodiles (Crocodylus porosus) to walk at 0.75-0.88 km/h on a treadmill for up to 20 min a day over 16 weeks, and compared their aerobic performance with that of unexercised crocodiles. In the exercised group, VO2max increased from 6.9 to 8.5 mLO2/kg/min (+28%), and locomotor endurance increased from 3.8 to 6.9 min (+82%). Neither VO2max nor endurance changed significantly in the sedentary group. This finding extends the exercise training effect onto another vertebrate clade, and demonstrates that ectothermic amniotes are capable of elevating their aerobic capacity in response to exercise training. We propose that differences in cardiopulmonary structure and function in non-avian reptiles may be responsible for the absence (in squamates) or presence (in crocodilians) of a strong training effect on aerobic capacity.  相似文献

We tested two hypotheses that have been proposed to explain why large numbers of sharpshinned hawks (Accipiter striatus) are counted during fall migration at Cape May Point, New Jersey. The most popular hypothesis, which suggests that hawks are drifted to the coast by west to northwest winds, was rejected in favour of the alternative hypothesis, which suggests that the large numbers of hawks seen on west winds resulted from a sampling bias. Using modified marine radar, we found that sharp-shinned hawks flew significantly lower at Cape May on days with west winds than on days with other winds, making them easier to count. The altitude of flight on days with other winds was regularly greater than 400 m, and hawks were difficult to detect without the radar. Migration traffic rates at Cape May were consistently greater than the broad-front migration rates computed from counts taken 36 km north and inland from Cape May. Flight directions measured at the inland site, away from topographic leading lines, showed that sharp-shinned hawks compensate for different wind directions by adjusting their headings, and the direction realized on all winds brings them to the coast. Our results suggest that counts of migrating hawks at some topographic features are subject to systematic biases and the conclusions derived from these counts may be erroneous.  相似文献

Aims The Cape Peninsula is a small area (471 km 2) situated on the south-westernmost tip of the Core Cape Subregion (CCR) of South Africa. Within the Cape Peninsula, Fabaceae are the third most species-rich plant family (162 species) and they have the second highest number of endemic species after the Ericaceae. However, legumes are not the dominant taxa in the vegetation. They tend to show patchy distributions within the landscape and different species assemblages usually occupy particular niches at any given locality. The present study undertook to establish if edaphic factors influence legume species distribution in the Cape Peninsula and to determine the key indicator species for the different assemblages. Methods Soils from 27 legume sites, spanning all major geological substrates of the Cape Peninsula, were analysed for 31 chemical and physical properties. Legume species present at each site were recorded and a presence/absence matrix was generated. Cluster analysis and discriminant function analysis (DFA) were run to group the sites based on overall similarity in edaphic characteristics and to identify the soil parameters contributing towards discriminating the groups. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) was used to test for a correlation between legume species compositions and edaphic factors. The strength of the association between legume species and site groupings based on edaphic properties was assessed using indicator species analysis.Important findings Based on similarity in overall soil characteristics, the sites formed three clusters: one comprising sites of sandstone geology, one with dune sand sites and the third cluster comprising sites of both shale and granite geologies (hereafter referred to as soil types). The DFA confirmed the distinctness of these clusters and the CCA showed a significant correlation between legume species composition and edaphic factors. The key edaphic parameters were clay content, iron (Fe), potassium (K), sulphur (S) and zinc (Zn). These findings reveal that the Cape Peninsula is edaphically heterogeneous and edaphically distinct habitats contain discrete legume species assemblages that can be distinguished by unique indicator species. Furthermore, multiple soil parameters, rather than a single parameter, are involved. Therefore, edaphic factors play a significant role in driving the distribution of legume species in the Cape Peninsula and discrete legume species assemblages occupy distinct habitats.  相似文献

Yellowfin bream were tagged and released in three non-spawning areas and two spawning areas in Moreton Bay, a large estuarine system on the east coast of Australia. A total of 194 fish were recaptured. Juvenile fish made only small-scale movements (less than 6 km) from the release site. Small-scale movements were also recorded for adult fish, although large-scale movements from 10 to 90 km were also recorded. The large-scale movements appear to be associated with the migration of adult fish to or from surf bar spawning areas. Some adult fish remained in feeding areas during the spawning season (May-August). There was no indication from tag recoveries of any movements of yellowfin bream outside Moreton Bay and the results indicate that adult yellowfin bream in Moreton Bay may be regarded as a unit stock for the purpose of fisheries management.  相似文献

Understanding the spatial scale of demographic connectivity in marine reef fishes dispersing pelagic larvae is a challenging task because of the technical difficulties associated with tagging and monitoring the movements of progeny at early life stages. Several studies highlighted a strong importance of local retention with levels of dispersal of ecological significance restricted to short distances. To date little information is available in species where pelagic dispersal lasts for long periods of time. In this work, population structure and connectivity were studied in the grey triggerfish, Balistes capriscus. Grey triggerfish larvae and juveniles remain associated with floating Sargassum sp. beds for an estimated period of 4–7 months before settling on benthic habitats where they remain sedentary as adults. Analysis of genetic variation among populations along the continental shelf of the northern Gulf of Mexico and U.S. east coast, encompassing over 3,100 km of coastline, revealed homogeneous allele frequencies and a weak isolation‐by‐distance pattern. Moment and maximum‐likelihood estimates of dispersal parameters both indicated occurrence of large neighbourhoods with estimates of the dispersal distribution parameter σ of 914 and 780 km, respectively. Simulated distributions of dispersal distances using several distribution functions all featured substantial fractions of long‐distance dispersal events with the 90% percentiles of travel distance prior to settlement averaging 1,809 km. These results suggest a high dependency of local recruitment on the output of nonlocal spawning stocks located hundreds of kilometres away and a reduced role of local retention in this species.  相似文献
