Anthropogenic factors that negatively impact reef fishes can include changes in life-history patterns of fisheries-targeted species. Understanding these impacts on growth and population age structure is essential in the management of exploited populations of fishes. This is the first study to directly compare age and growth for a major fisheries species between east and west populations of a transatlantic reef fish. The main goal of this study was to document age and growth in grey triggerfish Balistes capriscus from coastal waters of Ghana in the Gulf of Guinea (GOG) and compare those with the previous growth studies from that region and with the western Atlantic population. A secondary objective of this study was to evaluate the use of otoliths to age triggerfish and to provide a preliminary comparison with spine-derived age estimates. The results obtained from this study provided an updated understanding of the growth and age structure of the eastern B. capriscus population in GOG. The authors documented that shifts in population attributes occurred for B. capriscus after its major decline in abundance. The differences in physical and biotic characteristics of the East and West Atlantic regions and the differences in collection methods of samples make direct comparisons of growth parameters difficult. Nonetheless, overall differences in maximum sizes and ages were apparent; the western Atlantic population had a larger maximum size and older maximum age. The authors also documented that sagittal otoliths can be used to provide age estimates for triggerfish species, and otoliths as an ageing structure had better between-reader precision compared to dorsal spines.  相似文献

Jasmonates are lipid-derived hormones that act as signal molecules in abiotic and biotic stresses and influence several aspects of plant growth and development. In this work we have investigated the effect of jasmonic acid (JA) on the root architecture of Helianthus annuus seedlings and if JA and auxins interact to modulate the growth of the primary root (PR) and lateral roots (LR). The addition of μM concentrations of JA to the growing medium of sunflower seedlings decreased the growth of the PR and LR, and also reduced the number of LR. Moreover, treatment with ibuprofen, an inhibitor of JA synthesis, increased PR and LR root length causing a deep effect on root architecture. Hence, not only exogenous but also the endogenous JA regulates sunflower root growth. Microscopic analysis showed that the application of JA reduces the cortex cell length and the estimated cell production rate in root meristem while ibuprofen only affects the cell elongation. A possible interaction between JA and auxins to regulate root growth was further analyzed. We show that JA produced its phenotype even in the presence of reduced levels of auxin generated by treatment with an auxin transport inhibitor. Besides, the auxin produced its phenotype even when ibuprofen was applied. In conclusion, JA may induce primary and lateral root growth inhibition in sunflower by an auxin-independent pathway.  相似文献

Is selection for territorial aggression in brown trout density‐dependent?   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A comparison between a high-density (migratory) and a low-density (stream-resident) population of brown trout Salmo trutta , from the same stream, showed there was no support for the view that aggression was density-dependent.  相似文献

Food resources and population density are key factors influencing spatiosocial organisation. We compared the space use of two dormiceGlis glis (Linnaeus, 1766) populations differing in density, one high and the other low, in a breeding year 2002 (when trees masted) and in a non-breeding year 2001 (with reproductive failure and a total lack of mast). In the low-density population males always had larger home ranges and travelled longer distances than females. In the high-density population such differences between sexes became significant only in the breeding year. Home ranges and distances travelled each night were larger in the low-density population, but only for males.  相似文献

We compared demography of populations along gradients of population density in two medium-sized herbivorous marsupials, the common brushtail possum Trichosurus vulpecula and the rufous bettong Aepyprymnus rufescens, to test for net dispersal from high density populations (acting as sources) to low density populations (sinks). In both species, population density was positively related to soil fertility, and variation in soil fertility produced large differences in population density of contiguous populations. We predicted that if source–sink dynamics were operating over this density gradient, we should find higher immigration rates in low-density populations, and positive relationships of measures of individual fitness—body condition, reproductive output, juvenile growth rates and survivorship—to population density. This was predicted because under source–sink dynamics, immigration from high-density sites would hold population density above carrying capacity in low-density sites. The study included 13 populations of these two species, representing a more than 50-fold range of density for each species, but we found that individual fitness, immigration rates and population turnover were similar in all populations. We conclude that net dispersal from high to low density populations had little influence on population dynamics in these species; rather, all populations appeared to be independently regulated at carrying capacity, with a balanced exchange of dispersers among populations. These two species have suffered recent reductions in range, and they are ecologically similar to other species that have declined to extinction in inland Australia. It has been argued that part of the cause of the vulnerability of species like these is that they exhibit source–sink dynamics, and disturbance to source habitats can therefore cause large-scale population collapses. The results of our study argue against this interpretation.  相似文献

Growth patterns and food composition of perch, Perca fluviatilis L., was studied in two small forest lake populations in southern Finland. Size and morphometry of the lakes and physical and chemical properties of water are similar. There is a clear difference in the growth rates of perch between the two lakes. The difference in growth is highly significant in all age groups. In the first lake there is a perch population of 2 000 (1750 ind · ha–1) adult fishes. In the second lake there is a small population of pike, that keeps the perch population down: 200 adult perch (530 ind · ha-1). The main food items of perch are crustacean zooplankton, Asellus aquaticus L. and Trichoptera larvae in the first lake and zooplankton, Odonata larvae, Ephemeroptera larvae and Heteroptera in the second. It is concluded that the main reason for the growth difference of studied perch populations is the different population density. There are also differences in species composition of bottom fauna of the lakes, maybe owing to the floating Sphagnum peat moss vegetation in the second lake. This can also affect the growth difference between the two populations of perch.  相似文献

We conducted simulations to disentangle the effect of density and clonal propagation on spatial genetic structure and genetic diversity parameters in Prunus avium. In a previous paper, we observed stronger family structure in populations exhibiting high density and high clonal propagation, whereas one low-density and low clonal propagation population showed negative spatial autocorrelation. We tried to understand these results by simulating 200 years of growth, mating and dispersal with the model Eco-Gene, using two levels of density and three levels of clonal propagation in one high-density population (Spargründe) and one low-density population (Chorin). We used allele frequencies from eight microsatellite loci to generate the populations used for simulations. In order to detect effects of the initial structure on the results, we also ran the simulations starting from the real data. We observed positive effect of clonal propagation on the strength of SGS, while high densities exhibited a negative impact. Genetic diversity was maintained at high densities, while pollen dispersal was shorter. Heterozygosity increased at higher clonal propagation rates, although genetic diversity (accumulated number of genotypes) was lower. We discuss the results according to mating processes and potential management scenario.  相似文献

The growth of sibling dorada Brycon moorei (Characidae) housed individually in small enclosures (0·25 l; 27·0° C, range ±0·5° C; 12L:12D) from the egg stage was examined at regular intervals until 36 days after hatching (dah) and compared with their behaviour. From 1 to 8 dah, when cannibalism is intense among B. moorei raised in groups, there was no significant increase of size heterogeneity among isolated fish (c.v . of total length of 3·1 and 3·6%, at 1 and 8 dah, respectively) and no primacy of early size differences either. These results suggest that cannibals of B. moorei raised in groups are not natural‐born killers with greater growth capacities than others. Size heterogeneity among isolated fish increased significantly first when B. moorei were weaned on formulated feed (8–15 dah), then again from 24 to 36 dah when the average growth rate was half as fast as before (c. 0·5 v. 1·0 mm day?1), despite fish consistently feeding. During both periods, there was a significant, positive relationship between individual growth and aggression or boldness. These results suggest that (1) boldness can favour the transition to a new food type and (2) fish exhibited a variable responsiveness to spatial restriction in small enclosures, which may have been alleviated in some individuals by establishment of territorial behaviour, as suggested by their enhanced aggression.  相似文献

It is not clear whether animals consistently change their home ranges in response to density reduction. This is important to understand for better management of pest species where sustained control is required. Our objective was to measure whether home ranges of Australian brushtail possums (Trichosurus vulpecula) change following density reduction, using global positioning system (GPS) tracking. We experimentally reduced the densities of 2 populations (1 high-density at 7 possums/ha and 1 low-density at 1.5 possums/ha) and did not manipulate another population. We then monitored home ranges of individual possums. The high-density manipulated population had a significant increase in home-range size and overlap within 5 weeks following reduction, whereas the other 2 populations did not. This research suggests that changes in possum home ranges following control are likely influenced by the initial density of the pest population. © 2019 The Wildlife Society.  相似文献

Since pollen usually travels limited distances in wind-pollinated plant species, plants growing at low density may become pollen limited. We examined how local pollen availability and population density affect reproductive success in two wind-pollinated, dioecious species, Thalictrum fendleri and Thalictrum dioicum. Distance to the nearest flowering male, the number of flowering males within 2 m, and flower number on those males served as measures of local pollen availability. Increased distance from pollen donors reduced seed set in the lowest-density population of each species, but seed set in high-density populations was not correlated with local pollen availability. For plants in high- and low-density populations at similar distances from pollen donors, this distance only affected seed set in low-density populations. To ensure that differences in resource availability were not causing spurious correlations between seed set and plant density, we constructed low-density artificial arrays in populations of T. dioicum. In these, seed set decreased rapidly with increases in distance from pollen donors. Despite these effects, the density of males in a population was not correlated with average seed set in T. dioicum, and hand pollination in the T. dioicum populations also failed to increase seed set over natural levels. These results suggest that pollen receipt only limits seed set on isolated plants within low- density populations of T. dioicum and T. fendleri.  相似文献

Although ecological specialists exploit a relatively limited resource base, it is unclear whether specialization limits local population density. Here, we focus on the relationship between diet specialization and local population density of a phytophagous insect, the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella L. (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae). We compared key life history traits and food plant use among five pairs of high- and low-density populations from widely separate geographical areas. Moths from populations that persist at high densities were more generalized in food plant use than moths from low-density populations. In particular, the oviposition preference and larval performance of moths from some high-density populations were less variable across a suite of food plants, suggesting that moths from high- density populations had a broader diet. In addition, low- density populations were less similar to each other, exhibiting opposing preferences for particular plant species. Hence diet breadth may explain some of the persistent differences in the population density of diamondback moths in the field, consistent with the idea that ecological specialization may be generally associated with population density. A model for the dynamics of a single species population of plants is proposed and its use demonstrated by the analysis of a simple example. The model incorporates the effects of microsite variation by allowing for individual differences in growth and death rates within each season. We demonstrate that an increase in the variance in individual growth rates may increase both the chances that a plant population will persist and the equilibrium size of that population. We also show that even if size-dependent death is occurring, it may not have a significant effect on the shape of the size frequency distribution. An extension of the model to multispecies communities of plants suggests an experimental procedure to determine whether competition is responsible for excluding a particular plant species from a community that appears otherwise to be suitable. A more detailed analysis of the model for a two-species community produces conditions for competitive coexistence reminiscent of those from the Lotka-Volterra competition equations. Another extension suggests that selection will favor those genotypes that maximize the product of germination probability and mass of seeds produced, if survivorship and growth are not substantially altered. Finally, an analog to r- and K-selection theory for animal populations is developed. Selection in low-density populations favors increasing growth rate, and in high-density populations favors minimizing the effect of neighbors on one's own growth rate.

The relaxation of predation and interspecific competition are hypothesized to allow evolution toward “optimal” body size in island environments, resulting in the gigantism of small organisms. We tested this hypothesis by studying a small teleost (nine‐spined stickleback, Pungitius pungitius) from four marine and five lake (diverse fish community) and nine pond (impoverished fish community) populations. In line with theory, pond fish tended to be larger than their marine or lake conspecifics, sometimes reaching giant sizes. In two geographically independent cases when predatory fish had been introduced into ponds, fish were smaller than those in nearby ponds lacking predators. Pond fish were also smaller when found in sympatry with three‐spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) than those in ponds lacking competitors. Size‐at‐age analyses demonstrated that larger size in ponds was achieved by both increased growth rates and extended longevity of pond fish. Results from a common garden experiment indicate that the growth differences had a genetic basis: pond fish developed two to three times higher body mass than marine fish during 36 weeks of growth under similar conditions. Hence, reduced risk of predation and interspecific competition appear to be chief forces driving insular body size evolution toward gigantism.  相似文献

Do trade-offs between growth and reproduction differ between an invasive and noninvasive plant species and how do such trade-offs relate to population demographics? To help address these questions, we compared demographics for an invasive plant species, Rubus discolor, with a noninvasive congener, R. ursinus, in several populations of varying density. Removal of floral buds from reproductive canes increased the size of juvenile canes that arose from clonal sprouting in R. ursinus, suggesting a trade-off between current reproduction and growth. Removal of floral buds had no effect on growth of R. discolor. R. ursinus displayed trade-offs between reproduction (sexual and vegetative) and future growth based on negative correlations between leaf area production and both clonal sprouting and seedling production during the previous year. R. discolor did not exhibit these trade-offs. Both species had high population growth rates in low-density populations, but exhibited little or no growth in high-density populations. A life table response experiment was used to determine the underlying cause for the effect of density on population growth. For R. ursinus, lack of population growth in high-density populations was due primarily to increased mortality of clonally sprouting canes, while for R. discolor, it was due to decreased clonal cane production. Elasticity analysis revealed that clonal growth was more important than sexual reproduction for population growth of both species. However, elasticity values for sexual reproduction in R. discolor were greater in high- than low-density populations. This suggests an increased reliance on sexual reproduction in populations that had reached stable sizes, which could increase the capacity of R. discolor to disperse to new sites. Elasticity analyses were also used to simulate the efficacy of various control strategies for R. discolor. Control of this species could be attained by reducing clonal production within existing populations while reducing seed production to limit establishment of new populations.  相似文献

Groups of the triggerfish Pseudobalistes fuscus and Odonus niger were studied from the underwater laboratory Neritica in Eilat, Gulf of Akaba, in the Red Sea. Mating and the roles of the sexes during broodcare seem to depend strongly on territory size, probably determined by shelter site and food availability, and territorial control- and defendability. The discussion considers why evolution has favoured maternal broodcare in the one case and biparental in the other.  相似文献

Aggressive behaviour plays an important role in securing resources, defending against predators and shaping social interactions. Although aggression can have positive effects on growth and reproductive success, it is also energetically costly and may increase injury and compromise survival. Individual genetic diversity has been positively associated with aggression, but the cause for such an association is not clear, and it might be related to the ability to recognize kin. To disentangle the relationships between genetic diversity, kinship and aggression, we quantified aggressive behaviour in a wild, self‐fertilizing fish (Kryptolebias marmoratus) with naturally variable degrees of genetic diversity, relatedness and familiarity. We found that in contrast to captive fish, levels of aggression among wild K. marmoratus are positively associated with individual homozygosity, but not with relatedness or familiarity. We suggest that the higher aggression shown by homozygous fish could be related to better kin discrimination and may be facilitated by hermaphrodite competition for scarce males, given the fitness advantages provided by outcrossing in terms of parasite resistance. It seems likely that the relationship between aggression and genetic diversity is largely influenced by both the environment and population history.  相似文献

We studied agonistic interactions among male Madagascar hissing cockroaches,Gromphadorhina portentosa, in groups of five (low-density) or 10 (high-density) males. Consistent with previous studies of male pairs, we observed aggression (Abdomen Flick, Abdomen Push, Butt, Lunge), submission (Crouch, Retreat), and noncontact behavior (Abdominal Extension, Abdomen Thrash, Agonistic Hiss, Stilt). Males at both densities performed all acts. However, males in the high-density group performed Abdomen Push significantly more often than males at a low density. The rate of each remaining act was unaffected by density. Regardless of density, males within social groups varied in aggression. More aggressive males utilized frontal assaults (Butt and Lunge) during interactions, while males displaying lower levels of aggression preferentially used the abdomen during interactions. More aggressive males performed Abdomen Flick more frequently, while males displaying lower levels of aggression performed Abdomen Push. We also investigated the relationship between male aggression and the four noncontact behaviors. We found that Abdominal Extension, Abdomen Thrash, and Agonistic Hiss were positively correlated with our aggregate measure of male aggression suggesting these are aggressive displays. Stilt was positively correlated with measures of both aggression and submission, leaving its function unclear. None of the behavioral acts examined in this study were highly correlated with male weight. Our results are discussed in light of possible hypotheses addressing the function of specific behavior during male-male competition.  相似文献

Melanism and disease resistance in insects   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
There is growing evidence that insects in high-density populations invest relatively more in pathogen resistance than those in low-density populations (i.e. density-dependent prophylaxis). Such increases in resistance are often accompanied by cuticular melanism, which is characteristic of the high-density form of many phase polyphenic insects. Both melanism and pathogen resistance involve the prophenoloxidase enzyme system. In this paper the link between resistance, melanism and phenoloxidase activity is examined in Spodoptera larvae. In S. exempta , cuticular melanism was positively correlated with phenoloxidase activity in the cuticle, haemolymph and midgut. Melanic S. exempta larvae were found to melanize a greater proportion of eggs of the ectoparasitoid Euplectrus laphygmae than non-melanic larvae, and melanic S. littoralis were more resistant to the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana (in S. exempta the association between melanism and fungal resistance was non-signficant). These results strengthen the link between melanism and disease resistance and implicate the involvement of phenoloxidase.  相似文献
