Less intensively managed semi-natural habitats, e.g., field and meadow margins like hedgerows, are thought to be crucial landscape components for maintaining biodiversity in highly disturbed and intensively managed agricultural landscapes. In this study, we focused on the effects of three meadow margin types on activity-density, species richness and species composition of carabid and staphylinid beetles recorded by pitfall traps in Central European landscapes dominated by intensively managed meadows. Carabid activity-density was significantly higher in meadows than in meadow margins and within meadow margins their activity-density increased from grassy meadow margins via shrubby ones to woody meadow margins. We found that recorded species richness of both carabid and staphylinid beetles was not significantly affected by habitat identity (meadow margin or neighbouring meadow) and meadow margin type. Recorded species composition of both investigated taxa was significantly affected by habitat identity and interaction between habitat identity and meadow margin type (i.e. it differed between particular meadow margin types). Assemblages inhabiting various meadow margin types were more dissimilar between each other than assemblages from neighbouring meadows. Meadow margins within grassland dominated landscapes maintain local species richness by hosting different species from those living in surrounding meadows. Dissimilarity of carabid and staphylinid assemblages from meadows neighbouring both sides of particular meadow margin did not differ between meadow margin types. Our results indicate that semi-natural habitats play an important role in maintaining biodiversity not only in agricultural landscapes dominated by arable fields, but also in those dominated by meadows.

The biosynthesis of chrysomelidial and plagiodial was studied in the rove beetle subtribe Philonthina (Staphylinidae). Glandular homogenates were found to convert synthetic (2E,6E)-[trideuteromethyl-5,5-(2)H(5)]octa-2,6-diene-1,8-diol (10) into nor-chrysomelidial (14) and nor-plagiodial (13). The overall transformation requires; i) oxidation of the substrate at C(1) and C(8), ii) cyclization of the resulting dialdehyde to nor-plagiodial followed by iii) isomerization to give nor-chrysomelidial. The oxidase requires molecular oxygen as a cofactor and operates with removal of the pro-R hydrogen from C(1) and C(8) of synthetic (1R,8R,2E,6E)-[1,8-(2)H(2)]-2,6-dimethyl-octa-2,6-diene-1,8-diol (15), producing a dialdehyde along with H(2)O(2). Unlike enzymes from iridoid-producing leaf beetle larvae, the Philonthus enzyme is able to oxidize saturated substrates such as citronellol. Crude protein extracts prepared from Philonthus glands by ammonium sulfate precipitation, were found to produce hydrogen peroxide at a rate of 0.085+/-0.003 ng H(2)O(2) (ng protein)(-1) hr(-1) with nerol as an oxidase substrate. The cyclase operates with opposite stereochemistry to the enzyme(s) from Phaedon cochleariae and other herbivorous leaf beetles, specifically removing the C(5)-H(R) hydrogen atom from (4R,5S,2E,6E)-[4,5-(2)H(2)]-2-methyl-octa-2,6-diene-1,8-diol (17). These findings have enabled us to construct a detailed account of iridoid biosynthesis in rove beetles, which resembles the biosynthetic route in leaf beetle larvae, but exhibits distinct stereochemical differences.

Abstract Weiria australis gen. n and sp. n. (type locality Western Australia, Kimberley Region, CALM Site 25/1, Synnot Ck.), a myrmecoid (ant-like body form) aleocharine staphylinid, is described, and habitus and line illustrations are provided for its recognition. The species is tentatively placed in the tribe Aenictoteratini; similarities and differences to tribal characters shared by other members of the Aenictoteratini, and similarities and differences to other aenictoteratine genera are discussed. This is the first fully myrmecoid aleocharine, and the first member of the tribe Aenictoteratini, known from Australia. Association of Weiria gen. n. with the ant genus Aenictus Shuckard is postulated.

Abstract:  Several studies have shown that the mainly granivorous carabid beetles, e.g. Amara spp., include animal food in their diet to a considerable extent. We therefore hypothesized that the performance of these beetles would be enhanced by dietary mixing including both seeds and animal food. In order to test this, we conducted laboratory feeding experiments with adults and larvae of Amara similata . Both adults and larvae were subjected to different diet treatments including: seeds, houseflies, grasshoppers, earthworms, slugs and snails in pure and mixed diets. Larval survival, development time, pupal and teneral weights were used as indicators of food quality for the larvae. For the adult beetles, mass change was used as an indicator of food quality. We found seeds to be high-quality food, while all pure animal diets were of low quality for both adults and larvae. Animal foods added to the seed diet had both positive and negative effects. A mixed diet of all foods enhanced the mass gain of adults compared with the seed diet, but reduced larval performance dramatically. Earthworms and grasshoppers added to seeds increased the pupal and teneral weights, while reduced larval survival. Thus, A. similata is omnivorous with a mainly granivorous feeding habit. It may gain benefits on some fitness parameters and incur costs on others from preying or scavenging on animal food. Therefore, the overall fitness consequences of a mixed seed-animal diet are uncertain.

Recent human activities and rising air temperature have increased the vulnerability of sub-Antarctic islands to alien species. At the Kerguelen Islands, the predaceous ground beetle Merizodus soledadinus is the only invasive insect originating from the southern cold temperate area (native from Patagonia, Tierra del Fuego and Falkland Islands). This austral origin raises the question of the limits of its physiological tolerance and capability to withstand (1) global change and (2) warmer climates of archipelagos where its accidental transportation could be facilitated from the Kerguelen Islands (namely Amsterdam and Saint Paul). Using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry metabolomics, we compared metabotypes of adults exposed to different temperatures (0, 4, 8, 12, 16, 20 °C). All individuals survived after 2 weeks regardless of the temperature they were exposed to. The physiological changes observed were consistent with increased metabolic rate at increased temperatures, without extreme metabotypes that are characteristic of acute stress. First cues of sublethal stress were observed after prolonged exposure to 20 °C, a warm regime unrealistic for such duration in sub-Antarctic Islands. Overall, M. soledadinus’ thermal tolerance exceeded temperatures currently experienced in nature, suggesting that climate warming may boost its invasion by eliciting its activity and broadening habitat suitability in both invaded and still pristine islands. This thermal tolerance may allow survival aboard ships and development in sub-Antarctic islands with conditions warmer than the Kerguelen Islands, such as Amsterdam and St Paul. Stringent biosecurity measures are thus needed to prevent transfer from Kerguelen to these islands. The native range of this predaceous beetle limited to the Falkland Islands and southernmost South America may be partly constrained by factors other than temperature, such as desiccation, predation or competition.

Because fens have undergone dramatic declines in recent decades, an important question is which management regimes and habitat parameters are most effective in preserving fen biodiversity. The aim of the present study was to assess the effects of five different management regimes (intensive grassland, moist meadows, summer harvested sites, winter harvested sites, fallows) on staphylinid beetle assemblages. During the study period 5,989 individuals from 92 staphylinid beetle species were recorded. Species richness and abundance were highest on intensive grassland and fallows, and water level and vegetation height had significant impacts on the abundance of staphylinids. On winter-harvested sites species richness and abundance were lowest. In general, staphylinid beetles did not show pronounced variation among management regimes, while the environmental factors water level, vegetation height and top soil mineralisation seemed to have a larger structuring impact. The number of threatened species and the conservation index were highest on summer-harvested sites and fallows, representing fairly well-preserved fens. We conclude that summer harvest of reed beds or no management at all appears to be most beneficial for the conservation of staphylinid beetles.

A list of species of the staphylinid subfamily Euasthetinae from the Baikal Area and adjacent territories is given. Edaphus beszedesi Rtt. and Euasthetus mandschuricus Puthz are new records for Russia, Eu. superlatus Peyer., for Siberia, Eu. laeviusculus Mnnh., for the Baikal Area, and Eu. ruficapillus Lac., for western Siberia. [Records of Eu. bipunctatus and Eu. ruficapillus from “Kamenesch-Podolsk” in the original Russian text actually refer to the misspelled City of Kamenets-Podolskii in Western Ukraine and, thus, the records of these two species for Western Siberia are erroneous.—Ed.]

The fauna of rove beetles of the sandur landscape in southern Meshchera (Ryazan Province), noted for the contrasting mesorelief forms, was studied for the first time. The regional fauna was found to comprise 178 species, of which 143 are listed for the first time. The core of the faunistic complex of rove beetles consists of Holarctic, Trans-Eurasian, and Euro-Siberian species, most of which commonly occur in the forest zone of European Russia. At the same time, some species distributed in the valley landscapes of Eastern Europe (Bledius tenenbaumi, Xantholinus dvoraki) have been recorded in southern Meshchera.

Laboratory experiments using whole cobs were conducted to examine the effect of varying densities of the larger grain borer, Prostephanus truncatus and the maize weevil, Sitophilus zeamais on rate of population increase by the histerid beetle, Teretriosoma nigrescens , a predator primarily of P. truncatus . Densities of all species of insects were determined at the end of the experiment, and an electrophoretic analysis of gut content was conducted on larval and adult T. nigrescens sampled during the experiments. Results indicated that T. nigrescens has a strong preference for P. truncatus and densities of T. nigrescens were associated only with densities of P. truncatus . The maize weevil played little role as an alternative prey or in interfering with T. nigrescens reproduction.

Effects of 37 fungicides — several of which were mixtures — on adult females of the rove beetle,Aleochara bilineata, were investigated in the laboratory. The pesticides were tested in concentrations equivalent to the highest recommended dosages for practical use. Mortality, egg production and hatch of the eggs were recorded. Most fungicides had no serious effect on any of the parameters measured. Among the morpholine and dithiocarbamate fungicides, several had adverse effects on egg production and/or hatch of the eggs laid. Furthermore, chinomethionate and pyrazophos were found to be toxic at the dosages used. Results are compared to results obtained with other species of beneficial arthropods in the laboratory. The importance of including several species in the assessment of pesticide side effects as well as the importance of measuring sublethal effects are stressed.

Abstract:   The toxicity of four insecticides used to control the Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), imidacloprid (Admire®), cryolite (Kryocide®), cyromazine (Trigard®), and Bacillus thuringiensis var. tenebrionis (Novodor®), to one of its natural enemies, the 12-spotted lady beetle, Coleomegilla maculata lengi Timberlake (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) was determined in the laboratory. Toxicity assays against C. maculata adults and larvae consisted of (1) topical applications and (2) exposures to treated foliage and prey, using concentrations up to 10 times the manufacturer's recommendations. Over a 6-day period, cyromazine (insect growth regulator) and B. t . var. tenebrionis (microbial insecticide) had no lethal effects on first and third instars C. maculata . For both larval and adult stages, cryolite (inorganic insecticide) caused very low predator mortality when topically applied and moderate mortality when ingested through contaminated eggs of Colorado potato beetles. Imidacloprid (systemic organic insecticide) was highly toxic to adult and larval C. maculata . Its estimated LD50 at 6 days following treatment, corresponded to 0.02–0.09 times the recommended field concentration, depending on the developmental stage and mode of contamination. These results indicate that integrated pest management programmes for Colorado potato beetles using imidacloprid or, to a lesser degree, cryolite, would be detrimental to C. maculata . Cyromazine and B. t . var. tenebrionis seem to present a better compatibility with the protection of C. maculata populations.

Effects of 67 herbicides — several of which were mixtures — and plant growth regulators on adult females of the rove beetle,Aleochara bilineata, were investigated in the laboratory. The pesticides were tested in concentrations equivalent to the highest recommended dosages for practical use. Mortality, egg production and hatch of the eggs were measured. Most herbicides had no serious effect on any of the parameters recorded. Among the urea herbicides, however, several showed adverse effects on egg production and/or hatch of the eggs laid. The strongest effect was exerted by methabenzthiazuron that impeded hatch of the eggs completely. Bromoxynil, pyridate and haloxyfod reduced survival, egg production and/or egg hatch to some degree, while carbaryl, which is also used as a plant growth regulator, killed all the beetles immediately. The usefulness of dose-response-studies and the importance of measuring sublethal effects are stressed, and the choice of herbicides showing no toxic effects is recommended.

The beetle Dicladispa gestroi is known only from Madagascar, where it is considered to be a pest of rice. Research were carried out from 1885 to 1994 in the Alaotra lake region, the main rice-producing area of the country, characterized by a warm rainy season from October to April and a cool dry season from April to October. The adult beetles invade the rice nurseries and the first direct-seeded fields at the beginning of the rainy season; they have a gregarious behaviour and their feeding activity, together with the mines bored by the larvae, determines a change of colour from green to pale yellow in the damage areas, which resemble outbreak areas of rice leafhoppers. Oviposition takes place only on young rice plants in the tillering stage. Females emerging after the end of February enter a reproductive diapause and leave the rice fields to 'hibernate'. Temperature summations for the egg, larval, and pupal development, as well as for the preoviposition period have been calculated. There is no yield loss up to a larval density of 0.6 per leaf and this economic injury level is seldom exceeded in the Alaotra lake region. Life tables carried out under field conditions show that chalcid parasitoids are the main mortality factor and are responsible for the collapse of entire outbreak areas. Since the discovery of the rice yellow mottle virus in 1989 in the Alaotra lake region and the disease transmission by chrysomelids, the pest status of D. gestroi has changed and control measures have to be applied. However, to avoid interference with the action of the parasitoids, chemical applications should be limited to rice nurseries.

Summary Metabolic rates were studied in adults and larvae of the two phytophagous beetles Hydromedion sparsutum and Perimylops antarcticus (Col., Perimylopidae) indigenous to the Sub-Antarctic island of South Georgia. From the regression lines for log10 metabolic rate on temperature no difference in oxygen consumption was found between adults and larvae of Hydromedion or adults of Perimylops from lower sites near sea level and upper sites at about 200 m. Elevated rates of metabolism, however, was found in larvae of Perimylops from upper sites. The slopes of the regression lines of corresponding upper and lower sites adults or larvae were similar in all cases. The metabolic rates were of the same level in adults of both species and in the larvae, but generally higher in adults than in larvae. The activation energies, calculated from Arrhenius plots, varied from 6.7 to 13.6 kcal.mol–1 in larvae and from 10.7 to 11.3 kcal.mol–1 in adults. The low values may be interpreted as an expression of cold adapted metabolism. Compared with published data on phytophagous beetles, the metabolic rates of the two species from South Georgia are comparable to two alpine species, but lower than the rates of an Arctic species.
