1. In the absence of historical water chemistry data, predictive biological indicator groups preserved in lake sediments can be employed to reconstruct the history of lake eutrophication. Diatoms are well established in this role, but to augment diatom‐based inferences of nutrient status we investigate the potential use of chironomid midges (Insecta: Chironomidae). 2. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) of modern chironomid assemblages in surface sediments from 44 lakes in the English Midlands and Wales, U.K., shows that five environmental variables (total phosphorus (TP), bottom dissolved oxygen, maximum lake depth, Secchi depth and surface water temperature) make a statistically significant (P < 0.05) contribution to explaining the variance in the chironomid data, of which TP makes the largest contribution (29%). 3. The relationship is used to develop a series of weighted averaging (WA) and partial least squares (PLS), (WA‐PLS) models to infer log10TP. The models are evaluated by leave‐one‐out (jack‐knifing) cross‐validation. The simplest minimal adequate model is provided by WA with unweighted inverse deshrinking of root mean square error of prediction (RMSEPjack=0.34 and r2jack=0.60). 4. Using this model, the trophic history of Betton Pool, Shropshire, U.K., is reconstructed from the mid‐19th century to the present day and the results from the chironomid‐TP model are compared with inferences from a diatom‐TP model ( 13 ). Both reconstructions suggest that there was a gradual rise in TP since 1850 AD until about 1974, followed by a more pronounced and rapid increase that has continued until the present. Inferred TP values from the WA chironomid inference model agree with diatom‐inferred values. 5. The study demonstrates that fossil chironomid assemblages can be used to investigate quantitatively the trophic history of lakes.  相似文献

Although some primary consumers such as chironomid larvae are known to exploit methane‐derived carbon via microbial consortia within aquatic food webs, few studies have traced the onward transfer of such carbon to their predators. The ruffe Gymnocephalus cernuus is a widespread benthivorous fish which feeds predominantly on chironomid larvae and is well adapted for foraging at lower depths than other percids. Therefore, any transfer of methanogenic carbon to higher trophic levels might be particularly evident in ruffe. We sampled ruffe and chironomid larvae from the littoral, sub‐littoral and profundal areas of Jyväsjärvi, Finland, a lake which has previously been shown to contain chironomid larvae exhibiting the very low stable carbon isotope ratios indicative of methane exploitation. A combination of fish gut content examination and stable isotope analysis was used to determine trophic linkages between fish and their putative prey. Irrespective of the depth from which the ruffe were caught, their diet was dominated by chironomids and pupae although the proportions of taxa changed. Zooplankton made a negligible contribution to ruffe diet. A progressive decrease in δ13C and δ15N values with increasing water column depth was observed for both chironomid larvae and ruffe, but not for other species of benthivorous fish. Furthermore, ruffe feeding at greater depths were significantly larger than those feeding in the littoral, suggesting an ontogenetic shift in habitat use, rather than diet, as chironomids remained the predominant prey item. The outputs from isotope mixing models suggested that the incorporation of methane‐derived carbon to larval chironomid biomass through feeding on methanotrophic bacteria increased at greater depth, varying from 0% in the littoral to 28% in the profundal. Using these outputs and the proportions of littoral, sub‐littoral or profundal chironomids contributing to ruffe biomass, we estimated that 17% of ruffe biomass in this lake was ultimately derived from chemoautotrophic sources. Methanogenic carbon thus supports considerable production of higher trophic levels in lakes.  相似文献

1. Surface-sediment assemblages of subfossil chironomid head capsules from fifty-four primarily shallow and nutrient-rich Danish lakes were analysed using multivariate numerical techniques. The species data, comprising forty-one chironomid taxa, were compared to environmental monitoring data in order to establish a relationship between chironomid faunal composition and lake trophic state.
2. The subfossil assemblages were compared to the chironomid bathymetric distributions along transects from four lakes. Correspondence analysis and similarity coefficients showed that the subfossil assemblages, sampled in the lake centre, reflect the chironomid communities in the littoral at a depth of 2–7 m.
3. Two-way indicator species analysis (TWINSPAN) was used to classify the Danish lakes into five groups defined by trophic state, lake depth and pH. Eighteen chironomid taxa showed significant differences in abundance among the five groups. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) showed the chlorophyll a concentration ([Chl a ]) and Secchi depth to be the variables best correlated to the faunal data, and fourteen taxa were significantly correlated to [Chl a ].
4. The strong correlation between chironomid data and the ln-transformed ([Chl a ]) was used to create a weighted averaging (WA) model to infer lake trophic state. Several models were tested by cross validation (leave-one-out jack-knifing), and a simple WA model using inverse de-shrinking had a RMSEPjack of 0.65 (ln units) and a r 2jack of 0.67.
5. The results can be used in the assessment and reconstruction of lake trophic state for long-term monitoring and palaeoecological investigations of shallow, temperate lakes in the mesotrophic to hypertrophic nutrient range.  相似文献

1. The area around Kangerlussuaq (Søndre Strømfjord; West Greenland, 67°N 51°W) contains thousands of lakes ranging from coastal, dilute (conductivity < 30 μS cm–1) oligotrophic systems to subsaline (~4000 μS cm–1), closed basin lakes close to the ice sheet margin. In closed basins, salinity (or conductivity) is often a proxy for effective moisture, and thus palaeorecords of lake conductivity can provide valuable palaeoclimatic data. Little or nothing is known about the recent history of these lakes and hence it is difficult to evaluate how they will respond to effects of future changes. 2. Over 100 lakes have been sampled (1996–2000) between the ice sheet and the outer coast for a variety of water chemical and limnological variables. Surface sediments were taken from a subset of 40 lakes and analysed for diatoms. Diatom responses to 28 environmental variables were analysed by multivariate ordination techniques and indicate that the main gradient is highly correlated to conductivity (explaining ~12% of species variance). Despite the relatively short gradient (24–4072 μS cm–1), diatom assemblages exhibit a clear response to conductivity. The most saline lakes do not contain a true saline flora. 3. We developed a range of weighted averaging (WA) and weighted‐averaging partial least squares (WA‐PLS) models from this training data set and found two component WA‐PLS models performed best. The effects of data transformation and omission of dissolution susceptible species (Diatoma spp.) on model performance were also examined. The error statistics for the preferred WA‐PLS (2) model (r2jack=0.88, root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP)=0.217 log μS cm–1) compare well with other published models. 4. A 210Pb‐dated short core from a meromictic, subsaline lake (Braya Sø; location 67°N, 51°W, max. depth 23 m; conductivity 2600 μS cm–1) was analysed for diatoms. Diatom preservation is poor and some taxa (e.g. Diatoma spp.) are badly corroded. Lake water conductivity was reconstructed using WA‐PLS models. Diatom‐inferred conductivity ranges from 1800 to 4400 μS cm–1 over the last 600 years (extrapolated 210Pb chronology). 5. The Kangerlussuaq area of West Greenland is an important area for palaeoclimatic research, located as it is between the Greenland ice sheet (ice core records) and the Davis Straits to the west. The development of a statistically robust transfer function for diatoms and conductivity will enable the reconstruction of conductivity from the many subsaline lakes around the head of the fjord and, hence, regional estimates of changing palaeoprecipitation.  相似文献

1. A weighted averaging (WA) regression and calibration model for diatoms and total phosphorus (TP) was developed from a dataset of 45 surface‐sediment samples from Swedish lakes. Jack‐knifed error statistics were comparable with those for similar diatom–TP datasets: r2jack=0.47, root mean squared error of prediction (RMSEP)=0.24 log10μg TP L–1 and mean bias=–0.002 log10 μg TP L–1 for the simple WA model; r2jack=0.36, RMSEP=0.27 log10 μg TP L–1 and mean bias=0.017 log10 μg TP L–1 for WA with tolerance downweighting. 2. The model was used to estimate TP concentrations for the Ekoln basin of Lake Mälaren using a 210Pb‐dated sediment core record. Highly eutrophic conditions developed in the basin in the 1960s as a result of nutrient inputs from cultivated land and the city of Uppsala. A reduction in the supply of phosphorus from sewage outlets in the late 1960s resulted in less eutrophic conditions. 3. The model results indicated levels of 50–60 μg TP L–1 prior to 1900. The rapid eutrophication of the lake basin after the 1950s and the subsequent recovery were evident from the diatom data. 4. Diatom‐inferred TP (DI–TP) values were validated by comparison with monitored data for the period 1966–95. The diatom model tended to underestimate TP at high levels (> 80 μg L–1) but overestimate at lower concentrations. 5. A good agreement was observed between the trends in TP concentration and the DI–TP concentration and the timing of the maximum was well reflected by the diatom‐based reconstruction. A significant correlation (r2=0.69, P < 0.01) was found between DI–TP and measured TP at this site.  相似文献

Results of the first long-term investigation of the profundal chironomid fauna of Starnberger See, a prealpine lake are reported. Data are presented on the qualitative and quantitative composition of the chironomid fauna in the profundal of Starnberger See, on the spatial variation, and on the phenology of the dominant species, based on pupal occurrence and the seasonal distribution of larval instars. Twenty-five distinct chironomid taxa could be recorded in the profundal zone. Typical inhabitants of the profundal zone of Starnberger See are the larvae of the genus Micropsectra. The maximum abundance of Micropsectra larvae were found at 60 m with 5644 Ind.m−2. Abundance, distribution and phenology of the dominant chironomid species are discussed in comparison with other lakes.  相似文献

The invertebrate fauna has been surveyed for twenty one unlimed generally acidic river systems in Norway. The data consist of 180 samples and 127 invertebrate taxa and associated water chemistry data (pH, calcium, acid neutralizing capacity, total aluminium, and conductivity). Multivariate numerical methods are used to quantify the relationships between aquatic invertebrates and water chemistry. Detrended canonical correspondence analysis (DCCA) shows one dominant axis of variation with high correlations for pH and aluminium. DCCA axis 2 is significantly correlated with calcium. The predictive abilities of invertebrates to pH are explored by means of weighted averaging (WA) regression and calibration and weighted averaging partial-least-squares regression (WA-PLS). The performance of the methods is reported in terms of the root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) of (observed pH-inferred pH). Bootstrapping and leave-one-out jackknifing are used as cross-validation procedures. The predictive abilities of invertebrates are good (RMSEPboot for WA = 0.309 pH units). Comparison of the invertebrates with diatom studies shows that invertebrates are as good predictors of modern pH as diatoms are. RMSEPjack shows that WA-PLS improves the predictive abilities. Indicator taxa for pH are found by Gaussian regression. Anisoptera, Agrypnia obsoleta, Leptophlebia marginata, Sialis lutaria, and Zygoptera have significant sigmoidal curves where abundances increase with decreasing pH. Cyrnus flavidus shows a significant unimodal response and has an estimated optimum in the acid part of the gradient. Isoperla spp. and Ostracoda show significant sigmoidal responses where abundances increase with increasing pH. Amphinemura borealis, Diura nanseni, Isoperla grammatica, I. obscura, and Siphonoperla burmeisteri show significant unimodal responses and have high pH optima. Many taxa do not have statistically significant unimodal or sigmoidal curves, but are found by WA to be characteristic of either high pH or low pH. These results suggest that a combined use of Gaussian regression and direct gradient analysis is needed to get a full overview of potential indicator taxa.  相似文献

Most functional feeding types are represented within the species rich group of aquatic chironomids. Thus, we hypothesized that different lake types and microhabitats within lakes would (1) host specific chironomid communities and (2) that the individual communities would show specific δ 13C stable isotope signatures reflecting the prevailing origin of food source. To test our hypotheses, five lakes in southwest Greenland were investigated at a high taxonomic resolution and with detailed information on δ 13C signature of the chironomids and of individual microhabitats (macrophytes, sediment, stones, and profundal). We found that there was a significant difference in δ 13C between the chironomid assemblages of freshwater lakes and oligosaline lakes, while assemblages of the littoral microhabitats did not differ significantly. The δ 13C of chironomids reflected the wide variety of habitat signals, particularly in the freshwater lakes. Our results indicate that many chironomid taxa are ubiquitous and are found in several microhabitats, suggesting that they can adjust their feeding strategy according to the habitat. The implication is that chironomid assemblage composition has only limited use as indicator of littoral microhabitats in the Arctic. On the other hand, the δ 13C signature of fossil chironomids might have a potential as indicator of microhabitats in freshwater lakes.  相似文献

SUMMARY 1. Seasonal phosphorus variability may be considerable in eutrophic lakes and patterns are influenced by internal, as well as external, nutrient loading. The strong seasonality of planktonic diatoms, with main growth periods in the spring and also in the autumn in meso‐ to eutrophic lakes, means that the measure of total phosphorus (TP) that is most relevant for diatom ecology may not be adequately assessed by single or few measurements during the year. 2. The diatom species assemblage of surface sediments can be used to infer in‐lake nutrient concentrations. Weighted averaging (WA) and weighted averaging partial least squares (WAPLS) regression and calibration models for diatoms and annual mean TP were developed for a 29‐site data set of Danish lakes based on (a) all diatom species and (b) planktonic species only. Jack‐knifed error statistics were: =0.37, root mean squared error of prediction (RMSEP)=0.28 log10μg TP L?1 and mean bias=0.04 log10μg TP L?1 for the WAPLS 2‐component model based on all species; =0.23, RMSEP= 0.32log10μg TP L?1 and mean bias=0.07 log10μg TP L?1 for the WA model with tolerance downweighting based on planktonic species only. These are comparable with similar, published data sets. 3. A subset of 23 sites was used to develop models based on seasonal TP measurements. Mean spring TP concentrations gave only slightly improved RMSEP values for models based on all species and plankton‐only (0.24 log10μg TP L?1 and 0.29 log10μg TP L?1, respectively). 4. Weighted averaging models derive environmental optima, for individual species, which are not necessarily of ecological relevance. However, good water chemistry data are required to model species' responses adequately and to develop calibration data sets.  相似文献

Chironomid communities as water quality indicators   总被引:32,自引:0,他引:32
Recent mathematical indices summarizing biological communities of indicators are recapitulated. Improvements of these indices based on weighting according to width of trophic ranges of each species are suggested. Their principle deficiencies, however, are pointed out.
Revised lists of characteristic profundal as well as littoral and sublittoral chironomids in Nearctic and Palearctic lakes show that at least 15 characteristic chironomid species communities can be delineated, 6 in each of the oligotrophic and the eutrophic ranges and 3 in the mesotrophic range. It is proposed that these communities be lettered consecutively in the Greek alphabet from α (alpha) to o (omikron). A key to the 15 divisions based on the species associations in the profundal zone of harmonic lakes is put forward. There is very good correlation between the 15 divisions and the ratios of average total phosphorus to mean lake depth and average chlorophyll a to mean lake depth.
The ratio of chironomids to oligochaetes and the distribution patterns of single species have proven useful in pin-pointing localized areas of pollution. The primary mechanism governing the distribution of chironomid communities in oligotrophic and mesotrophic lakes appears to be the availability of food materials rather than the annual hypolimnetic oxygen concentration. In eutrophic lakes the relationships between organic matter accumulation and oxygen levels are so interdependent as to be inseparable.  相似文献

We quantified the role of a main food resource, sedimenting organic matter (SOM), relative to oxygen (DO) and temperature (TEMP) in structuring profundal macroinvertebrate assemblages in boreal lakes. SOM from 26 basins of 11 Finnish lakes was analysed for quantity (sedimentation rates), quality (C:N:P stoichiometry) and origin (carbon stable isotopes, δ13C). Hypolimnetic oxygen and temperature were measured from each site during summer stratification. Partial canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) and partial regression analyses were used to quantify contributions of SOM, DO and TEMP to community composition and three macroinvertebrate metrics. The results suggested a major contribution of SOM in regulating the community composition and total biomass. Oxygen best explained the Shannon diversity, whereas TEMP had largest contribution to the variation of Benthic Quality Index. Community composition was most strongly related to δ13C of SOM. Based on additional δ13C and stoichiometric analyses of chironomid taxa, marked differences were apparent in their utilization of SOM and body stoichiometry; taxa characteristic of oligotrophic conditions exhibited higher C:N ratios and lower C:P and N:P ratios compared to the species typical of eutrophic lakes. The results highlight the role of SOM in regulating benthic communities and the distributions of individual species, particularly in oligotrophic systems.  相似文献

We investigated chironomid fauna of surface sediments and a short sediment core (Bol’shoy Kharbey Lake) from Pechora river basin, Northern Russia. Twenty three investigated lakes have thermokarst, glacial or floodplain origin and are characterised by low mineralization, mostly hydrocarbon-calcium type of water and low concentration of nutrients. Most of the lakes have circumneutral pH around ≤7 and only two lakes are slightly more acidic with pH ≤ 6. Ninety six chironomid taxa were identified in the surface sediments. Distribution of chironomids in the studied region is driven by continentality, mean TJuly and рН. Chironomid communities from the core of the B. Kharbei Lake demonstrate the highest similarity with the fauna of the deeper lakes of the glacial origin. The glacial lakes have the highest indices of continentality and the lowest winter temperatures within the investigated data set. The chironomid fauna of the glacial lakes is composed of the profundal, oligotrophic and cold-stenotherm taxa. The fauna of the floodplain and thermokarst lakes is more closely related to TJuly and is composed of littoral and phytophilic taxa of meso–or eutrophic waters and moderate temperature conditions. The fauna of the acidic thermokarst lakes considerably differs from the other lakes. Chironomid communities here are represented by tolerant to acidification taxa, and by the typically littoral and shallow water acid-tolerant taxa that apparently also can tolerate acidification. Studied sediment record covers ca last 200 years. The reconstructed TJuly during the entire period remain slightly below the modern temperatures. From 1970 reconstructed TJuly shows steady increase to the modern level. The reconstructed water depths (WDs) of the lake are higher than today till 1980. The highest WDs are reconstructed for ca 1970. After that the WDs gradually decrease to the modern level. Changes of the WDs are most probably related to changes in the precipitation rate.  相似文献

1. The specific respiration rate of 13 chironomid taxa and Chaoborus were measured to test the hypothesis of the relation between a species' ability to regulate their oxygen uptake and their distributional patterns among nine study lakes in British Columbia, Canada.
2. Respiration patterns of individual taxa were modelled using piecewise linear regression with break point and simple hyperbolic functions. Three types of respiration curves were identified: (i) classical oxy-conformers (e.g. littoral Cricotopus ) which cannot sustain a sufficient oxygen uptake with decreasing oxygen availability; (ii) oxy-regulators (e.g. profundal Chironomus ) which can regulate and maintain a constant respiration until a certain critical point and (iii) oxy-stressors ( Micropsectra ) which increase their respiration rate with decreasing oxygen availability until a critical point.
3. Respiration was measured at two different temperatures (10 and 20 °C), and over the range of oxygen saturation conditions studied here (0–90%) mean Q 10 values varied from 1.3 to 2.5.
4. The results show that different chironomid taxa have varying sensitivity to low oxygen concentrations and different respiratory responses to increased temperature. The critical point increased to higher oxygen saturation for six taxa, decreased for one taxon and was unchanged for two taxa.
5. The results illustrate one of the possible biological mechanisms behind the use of chironomids as temperature and climate indicators in palaeoecological studies by exploring the link between temperature and respiration physiology.  相似文献

Dynamics of greenhouse gases, CH4, CO2 and N2O, and nutrients, NO 2 + NO 3 , NH 4 + and P, were studied in the sediments of the eutrophic, boreal Lake Kevätön in Finland. Undisturbed sediment cores taken in the summer, autumn and winter from the deep and shallow profundal and from the littoral were incubated in laboratory microcosms under aerobic and anaerobic water flow conditions. An increase in the availability of oxygen in water overlying the sediments reduced the release of CH4, NH 4 + and P, increased the flux of N2O and NO 2 + NO 3 , but did not affect CO2 production. The littoral sediments produced CO2 and CH4 at high rates, but released only negligible amounts of nutrients. The deep profundal sediments, with highest carbon content, possessed the greatest release rates of CO2, CH4, NH 4 + and P. The higher fluxes of these gases in summer and autumn than in winter were probably due to the supply of fresh organic matter from primary production. From the shallow profundal sediments fluxes of CH4, NH4 + and P were low, but, in contrast, production of N2O was the highest among the different sampling sites. Due to the large areal extension, the littoral and shallow profundal zones had the greatest importance in the overall gas and nutrient budgets in the lake. Methane emissions, especially the ebullition of CH4 (up to 84% of the total flux), were closely related to the sediment P and NH 4 + release. The high production and ebullition of CH4, enhances the internal loading of nutrients, lake eutrophication status and the impact of boreal lakes to trophospheric gas budgets.  相似文献

Macrozoobenthos in Thingvallavatn is dominated by 42 taxa. The vertical distribution delimits 5 communities: (1) the surf zone community from 0–2 m, (2) the upper stony littoral community from 2–6 m, (3) the lower stony littoral community from 6–10 m, (4) the Nitella zone community from 10–20 m, and (5) the profundal zone community from 20–114 m. Total mean lakewide production was 78 kJ m–2 yr–1. Herbivores, detritivores, and carnivores contributed 59%, 38% and 3%, respectively. Respiration and ingestion were estimated according to the literature. Net production efficiency averaged 0.50. Ingestion was dominated by herbivores in the littoral zones (46–81%), while detritivores made up 93% in the profundal zone. Total zoobenthic production averaged 6% of estimated available food with a range from 10–11% in the three upper littoral zones to only 2% in the Nitella zone. The profundal fauna converted 6% of the estimated sedimentation of organic matter to secondary production. On a lakewide basis the zoobenthis utilized one third of the estimated potential food resources. Zoobenthic production made up 32% of total secondary production.  相似文献

1. Fish community structure and habitat distribution of the abundant species roach, perch and ruffe were studied in Lake Nordborg (Denmark) before (August 2006) and after (August 2007) aluminium treatment to reduce internal phosphorus loading. 2. Rapid changes in fish community structure, abundance and habitat distribution occurred following a decline in in‐lake phosphorus concentrations from 280 to 37 μg P L?1 and an increase in Secchi depth transparency from 1.1 to 1.9 m (August). The proportion of perch in overnight gill net catches increased, whilst roach decreased, and the average weight of all key species increased. 3. The habitat distribution of perch and roach changed from a high proportion in the upper pelagic and littoral zones in 2006, towards enhanced proportions in the deeper pelagic and profundal zone in 2007. The abundance of large‐bodied zooplankton increased and the abundance of benthic invertebrates decreased in the same period, suggesting that the habitat shift was not induced by food limitation. 4. Ruffe shifted from the littoral and upper profundal zones towards the deep profundal zone, likely reflecting an increased predation risk in the littoral zone and better oxygen conditions in the deep profundal. 5. Our results indicate that enhanced risk of predation in the upper pelagic and the littoral zones and perhaps improved oxygen concentrations in the deeper profundal zone at decreasing turbidity are responsible for the observed habitat shift. The results indicate that fish respond rapidly to changes in nutrient state, both in terms of community structure and habitat use.  相似文献

We explored statistical relationships between the composition of littoral diatom assemblages and 21 chemical and physical environmental variables in 69 lakes and 15 river sites in the lowland of northeastern Germany. Canonical correspondence analysis with single treatment and with forward selection of environmental variables was used to detect 11 important ecological variables (dissolved inorganic carbon [DIC], Na + , total phosphorus [TP], dissolved organic carbon [DOC], total nitrogen [TN], pH, oxygen saturation, dissolved iron, SO42 ? , NH4 + , soluble reactive silicium) and maximum water depth or Ca2 + or soluble reactive phosphorus that most independently explain major proportions of the total diatom variance among the habitats. Monte Carlo permutation tests showed that each contributed a significant additional proportion (P < 0.05) of the variance in species composition. Together, these 11 most important environmental variables explained 34% of the total variance in species composition among the sites and captured 73% of the explained variance from the full 21 parameters model. Weighted‐averaging regression and calibration of 304 indicator taxa with tolerance down‐weighting and classic deshrinking was used to develop transfer functions between littoral diatoms and DIC, pH, TP, TN, and Cl ? . The DOC:TP ratio was introduced and a weighted‐averaging model was developed to infer allochthonous DOC effects in freshwater ecosystems. This diatom‐DOC/TP model was significant (P < 0.001) and explained 7.6% of the total diatom variance among the sites, surpassing the inferential power of the diatom‐TP‐transfer function (7.3% explained variance). The root‐mean‐square errors of prediction of the models were estimated by jack‐knifing and were comparable with published data sets from surface sediment diatom samples. The data set of littoral diatoms and environmental variables allows use of the diatom‐environmental transfer functions in biomonitoring and paleolimnological approaches across a broad array of natural water resources (such as floodplains, flushed lakes, estuaries, shallow lakes) in the central European lowland ecoregion.  相似文献

We analyzed the relationship between chrysophyte cyst assemblages in surface sediment samples and limnological and geographical variables for 70 lakes located along Søndre Strømfjord in southwest Greenland. Over 247 stomatocysts were identified and of these, 153 were sufficiently abundant for use in statistical analyses. Eight stomatocysts were considered to be new and are described formally. Canonical correspondence analysis indicated that conductivity was the dominant variable explaining cyst distribution, reflecting the large conductivity gradient in lake water chemistry in this area. High conductivity lakes had distinctive cyst assemblages with lower diversity than low alkalinity lakes, where assemblages were similar to alpine soft‐water lakes elsewhere. The high conductivity lakes, however, had similar cysts to other saline lakes elsewhere in the arctic. Additionally, pH, calcium, maximum depth, longitude, sulfate, total phosphorus, and altitude all explained significant amounts of variability of cyst assemblages. Longitude was the only geographical variable that explained cyst variability independently of other variables (i.e. had a unique effect), which suggests that the climatic gradient from the coast to the head of the fjord has a structuring effect on cyst assemblages. Conductivity (weighted‐averaging partial least squares, r2=0.917; root mean square error=0.142; r2jack=0.861, root mean square error of prediction=0.191) and pH inference models (weighted averaging, r2=0.924; root mean square error=0.158; r2jack=0.826, root mean square error of prediction=0.240) were developed. For the pH model, high conductivity lakes (>800 μ S20·cm?1) were removed. Both models are statistically robust and could be applied to lakes in west Greenland to reconstruct conductivity and/or pH. Such paleolimnological reconstructions provide the means of acquiring long‐term data for use in the evaluation of, for example, regional paleoclimatic models.  相似文献
