Abstract

Fifty-three herbarium samples of the genus Dichodontium, originating from 15 countries in Europe and North America, were examined to critically assess new distinguishing characters between D. flavescens and D. pellucidum. The examination, including SEM, revealed some new characteristics in the gametophyte, notably leaf shape, leaf length: width ratio, and width of the nerve, permitting accurate determinations even on sterile material. D. flavescens is recognized here as a distinct species.  相似文献

Summary Individuals of the collembolan species Tomocerus flavescens from a beech wood on limestone near Göttingen (West Germany) were fed with C-14-labelled algae in the laboratory. On an average, T. flavescens exchanged almost all of its endogenous carbon after 3.4 moults. In periods of starvation the interval between two ecdyses increased from 5.2 to 6.1 days (17°C). The assimilation efficiency was determined in three independent ways (carbon use of different algal components; A=C-FU; C=P+R+FU, A=P+R): it ranged from 0.34 to 0.40 (converted to energy values 0.30 to 0.45). It could be raised in phases of high mobility and in periods of food shortage by lowering the gut passage rate. The decrease in feeding activity (demonstrated by gut contents analyses) in case of a detoriation of the food quality and the food availability can be partly compensated in this way. For individuals which did not reproduce, the ratio of production to assimilation was 0.24 (converted to energy values 0.31). T. flavescens showed an increased body growth in connection with reaching sexual maturity. Specific demands of nutritive substances in periods of physiological changes could possibly be compensated by a more efficient resource use as well as by differences in resource allocation. The studied population of T. flavescens was compared both with that of a Danish beech forest and general data from the literature. The production of few eggs rich in energy, the high weight of newly hatched individuals, the high growth as well as the storage of carbon connected with egg production, the comparatively low respiration metabolism and the high amount of energy invested in search for food have to be regarded as an adaptation to the habitat. According to conservative estimates climbing individuals of this species consume 0.83 g of the algal dry mass growing on one beech tree during one summer. T. flavescens mainly uses the ethanol-soluble components of the algae.  相似文献

Synopsis The densities of gobies (Gobiidae, Pisces) were counted by scuba divers on 13 sublittoral transects in Lough Hyne, southwest Ireland. The characters used for underwater identification are described. Densities ranged up to 6.5 m–2 for Pomatoschistus pictus (Malm), 4.0 m–2 for Gobiusculus flavescens (Fabricius), 0.9 m–2 for Gobius niger L., 0.3 m–2 for G. cruentatus Gmelin, and 0.3 m–2 for Thorogobius ephippiatus (Lowe), while G. paganellus L., G. couchi Miller & El-Tawil and Lesueurigobius friesii Malm were rare on the transects. Gobius cruentatus and T. ephippiatus were largely confined to holes under rocks, while P. pictus and G. niger were most abundant on more open terrain. G. flavescens was hyperbenthic and largely confined to water less than 5 m depth. Significantly less P. pictus, G. flavescens and G. niger were recorded at night, and sleepingG. flavescens were observed. A working model of the spatial overlap of gobies in Lough Hyne is presented, and the possible roles of diet, predation and temporal activity patterns in interspecific competition are discussed.  相似文献

Variation in isozyme patterns from ten populations of the Korean endemic Lycoris species was used to test the hypothesis that L. flavescens originated from natural hybridization between diploid L. chinensis and L. sanguinea var. koreana. Lycoris sanguinea var. koreana shows fixed heterozygosity at four of nine loci assayed, suggesting that this species is an allotetraploid instead of a diploid. Electrophoretic data suggest that Lycoris flavescens is an allotriploid species derived from the hybridization between diploid L. chinensis and tetraploid L. sanguinea var. koreana. The patterns of allelic distribution in populations of L. flavescens suggest multiple origins of the allotriploid. Within the L. flavescens complex, our isozyme data support the recognition of two taxa, L. flavescens and a recently recognized species, L. uydoensis. Niche occupation by 5 goby species (Teleostei, Gobiidae) in the Baltic Sea and its interpretation by means of the theory of pre-adaptation The habitats and prey of five goby species were investigated near the shore of the Lübeck Bight (SW Baltic) during the period 1989–1991. Observations showed that Gobius niger is a macrobenthos feeder, Pomatoschistus microps a meiobenthos feeder; Pomatoschistus pictus prefers meiobenthos as well as plankton while Pomatoschistus minutus feeds on benthos of every size, as well as planktonic cope-pods when offered in surplus; Gobiusculus flavescens is generally a plankton feeder but, when this component is in short supply in the summer, changes to macrobenthos. P. pictus and P. microps existed at different depths; G. flavescens and P. minutus presented countercurrent densities in shallow habitats during the course of a year. This adaptability of behaviour in habitat and prey choice can be explained by the modification ability of pre-adaptional genes in the goby genomes. After having invaded species-poor habitats such as the brackish Baltic Sea, wide niche dimensions are initially occupied. The niche is here considered to be an attribute of the species as well as of the habitat according to GÜNTHER (1950). Hence, innidation is defined as a process which implies specialization by loss of most preadaptations and leads to the optimal use of the ecosystem by the species. This process of a single species corresponds to the maturation of successions of whole biocoenoses.  相似文献

The structure of the food web including the endangered lycaenid butterfly Shijimiaeoides divinus asonis (Matsumura) was analyzed to identify species contributing most to maintaining the equilibrium of the food web. Twenty‐seven species belonging to 17 families fed on Sophora flavescens Aiton, the host‐plant of S. divinus asonis: 15 species were leaf and stem feeders, seven (including S. divinus asonis) fed on flower buds, four were flower feeders and one fed on the seeds of So. flavescens. Of these 27 species, four were omnivores. The natural enemies of S. divinus asonis comprised six insect species, 11 spider species and one entomopathogenic fungus species, including six new predator records. The linkage density, total number of trophic links, connectance, average chain length and predator–prey ratio were 1.617, 97, 0.0548, 2.267 and 0.694, respectively. Exclusion of any of the 15 species with four or more trophic links reduced the connectance of the food web. These 15 species included facultative mutualistic attendant ants and predators of S. divinus asonis, herbivores to So. flavescens, an omnivore feeding on S. divinus asonis and So. flavescens, and prey insects. Therefore, future studies should monitor these 15 species.  相似文献

Tailwind drift compensation serves to maximize a migrant's flight distance on a given amount of energy, and crosswind drift compensation serves to hold a course true and minimize the distance flown. With full or part compensation, airspeeds are predicted to increase with greater crosswind drift. To test whether migrating dragonflies compensated for wind drift, I measured the velocity and heading of Pantala hymenaea and P. flavescens in natural flight over a lake and the ambient wind speed and direction. P. hymenaea flew north-easterly (58°), whereas P. flavescens flew significantly more east–north easterly (74°) throughout the day. Pantala spp. demonstrated part compensation for changes in crosswind drift within individuals (mean compensation = 54%, P = 0.0000), evidence for use of a ground reference to correct for drift when flying over water. Among individuals, P. flavescens compensated for crosswind drift. P. hymenaea overcompensated and then drifted downwind on one morning and compensated for crosswind drift on the next. As predicted from optimal migration theory, airspeed (5.0 m/s for both species with no tailwind) decreased with tailwind velocity both among individuals (data for both species pooled [n = 19], P < 0.0001) and within each individual as it crossed the lake (P = 0.0016).  相似文献

The aim of the present article was to contribute to the systematics of the leydigi-like species of Leydigia consisting of a few (probably 3) formal species with: (1) a large basal spine on the postabdominal claw (as long as claw thickness at the base); (2) a short setulation at anterior margin of labral keel; (3) no longitudinal striation on the female valves; (4) at least three lateral setae in each fascicle on the postabdomen; (5) three large lateral setae on exopodite III. The morphology of L. leydigi (Schoedler, 1863) and L. louisi Jenkin, 1934 are redescribed, and type material of L. macrodonta Sars, 1916 is studied. In contrast to previous suggestions (Jenkin, 1934; Smirnov, 1971), I found that: (1) L. louisi is a valid species, not a subspecies of L. macrodonta; (2) L. macrodonta is not a member of the L. leydigi-group. The third member of leydigi-group, Leydigia macrodonta longiseta Chen Shou-zhong, 1992, was described from China. It is not a subspecies of L. macrodonta, but a relative of L. leydigi; most probably, it is a valid species, but this opinion must to be confirmed by examination of original Asian material. In this article, the presence of L. leydigi in Palearctic only, and that of L. louisi in only Africa was confirmed. A new subspecies of L. louisi, found in Mexico, will be reported separately.  相似文献

Several heteracanthocephalid specimens were recovered from the flatfish Rhombosolea leporina (Günther), a host of Heteracanthocephalus peltorhamphi (Baylis, 1944) Petrochenko, 1956 from New Zealand. Unlike H. peltorhamphi, these new specimens have trunk spines. Measurements and proboscis armament of the new specimens are consistent with the worms being Aspersentis minor Edmonds & Smales, 1992 originally described from the Australian flounder Rhombosolea tapirina Günther. A review of the family Heteracanthocephalidae Petrochenko, 1956 was undertaken to assess the validity of its four genera and eight species. The validity of Aspersentis megarhynchus (Linstow, 1892) Golvan, 1960 (syn. Echinorhynchus megarhynchus Linstow, 1892) is questioned. E. megarhynchus is not considered to be an heteracanthocephalid and is relegated to a species inquirenda. A. megarhynchus (Linstow, 1892) of Golvan (1960) nec E. megarhynchus Linstow, 1892 is considered a synonym of A. austrinus Van Cleave, 1929. The monotypic genus Heteracanthocephalus Petrochenko, 1956 is proposed as a synonym of Aspersentis Van Cleave, 1929 because there appear to be insufficient morphological differences between them. Aspersentis peltorhamphi n. comb. is proposed for Heteracanthocephalus peltorhamphi. The monotypic genus Sachalinorhynchus Krotov & Petrochenko in Petrochenko, 1956 is considered valid, but the other heteracanthocephalid genus, Bullockrhynchus Chandra, Rao & Shyamasundari, 1985, also monotypic, is not. B. indicus Chandra, Rao & Shyamasundari, 1985 possesses more features resembling rhadinorhynchids than heteracanthocephalids but only females are known, and therefore the genus and species cannot be placed. There are currently four valid species of Aspersentis and one of Sachalinorhynchus.  相似文献

Two new desmoscolecid species are described: Desmoscolex koloensis sp. nov. and D. parakoloensis sp. nov. Additional information is given on Desmoscolex (Desmolorenzenia) montana, D. sieverti and D. fennicus. The genus Desmolorenzenia is considered a subgenus of Desmoscolex. Pareudesmoscolex lacustris represents a juvenile state of Desmocolex dussarti. Some reflections are made on terrestrial and freshwater desmoscolecids.  相似文献

The genus Hemicycliophora (Nematoda: Hemicycliophoridae) contains 132 valid species of plant‐parasitic nematodes, collectively known as ‘sheath nematodes’. Hemicycliophora spp. are characterized morphologically by a long stylet with rounded basal knobs and a cuticular sheath, present in juvenile and adult stages. Populations of 20 valid and 14 putative species of Hemicycliophora and Loofia from several countries were characterized morphologically using light (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and molecularly using the D2‐D3 segments of 28S rRNA and internal transcribed spacer (ITS) rRNA gene sequences. LM and SEM observations provided new details on the morphology of these species. PCR‐restriction fragment length polymorphisms (PCR‐RFLPs) of the D2‐D3 of 28S rDNA were proposed for identification of the species. Phylogenetic relationships within populations of 36 species of the genus Hemicycliophora using 102 D2‐D3 of 28S rDNA and 97 ITS rRNA gene sequences as inferred from Bayesian analysis are reconstructed and discussed. Ancestral state reconstructions of diagnostic characters (body and stylet length, number of body annuli, shape of vulval lip and tail), using maximum parsimony and Bayesian inference, revealed that none of the traits are individually reliable characters for classifying the studied sheath nematode. The Shimodaira–Hasegawa test rejected the validity of the genus Loofia. This is the most complete phylogenetic analysis of Hemicycliophora species conducted so far. © 2014 The Linnean Society of London  相似文献

Type material of Lithothamnion flavescens Kjellman, originally described from Karlsøy (Troms) and Karmakul Bay (Novaya Zemlya), is re-examined and a lectotype is selected. Type specimens and other collections from NW Spitsbergen and North Norway possess distinctive characters of the genus Leptophytum, including the development of flattened epithallial cells, short subepithallial cells, and simple spermatangial structures. Leptophytum flavescens (Kjellman) comb. nov. resembles the generitype Leptophytum laeve, differing in having: (1) a thicker perithallium, to 900?µm (vs. 350?µm in L. laeve), that embeds older conceptacles, and (2) non-differentiated (in size or shape) pore cells of multiporate roofs. An epitype for L. laeve is also selected, which consolidates the status of this species and the genus, in agreement with the current literature and all publications prior to 1996.  相似文献

González‐Ittig, R. E., Salazar‐Bravo, J., Barquez, R. M. & Gardenal, C. N. (2010). Phylogenetic relationships among species of the genus Oligoryzomys (Rodentia, Cricetidae) from Central and South America. —Zoologica Scripta, 39, 511–526. The genus Oligoryzomys includes several species very similar in external morphology, which has resulted in a confusing specific taxonomy. Accurate species identification is particularly important because several species of Oligoryzomys act as natural hosts of hantaviruses affecting humans. Here, we assign specific status to individuals from a wide geographical area of Argentina and Chile using sequences of the mtDNA control region. We also compare cytochrome b sequences of 14 species recognized from Central and South America to infer the phylogenetic relationships within the genus. In addition, the results were analysed using available data on chromosome numbers, and the host–parasite relationships reported for the genus Hantavirus. We confirm the geographical distribution of Oligoryzomys longicaudatus (Argentina, Chile), Oligoryzomys nigripes (Argentina, Paraguay, Brazil), Oligoryzomys chacoensis (Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay), Oligoryzomys fornesi (Argentina, Paraguay), Oligoryzomys destructor (Argentina, Bolivia) and Oligoryzomys microtis (Bolivia, Brazil). Oligoryzomys longicaudatus is strongly related to the Oligoryzomys flavescens complex, which comprises four clades; O. nigripes is closely related to Oligoryzomys stramineus, and Oligoryzomys vegetus, to Oligoryzomys fulvescens from Central America. Oligoryzomys chacoensis, O. destructor, O. fornesi, O. longicaudatus, O. microtis, O. nigripes, O. stramineus, Oligoryzomys moojeni, Oligoryzomys rupestris, O. fulvescens and O. vegetus are confirmed as valid species, whereas O. flavescens, Oligoryzomys magellanicus, Oligoryzomys griseolus, Oligoryzomys victus, Oligoryzomys andinus and Oligoryzomys arenalis need exhaustive revision. The sister species to all the remaining entities of the genus was O. microtis, suggesting an Amazonian origin for the genus.  相似文献

Water‐soluble factors associated with walleye Sander vitreus predation on either yellow perch Perca flavescens or fathead minnows Pimephales promelas markedly increased the growth rate of P. flavescens. The findings suggest that P. flavescens possess an inducible growth‐promoting mechanism regulated by water‐born chemicals. It may be possible to increase the growth rate of farm‐raised P. flavescens by manipulating this system.  相似文献
