Japanese honeysuckle (Lonicera japonica Thunb.), introduced to the United States, and the native coral honeysuckle (Lonicera sempervirens L.) were compared to determine how intrinsic differences in their growth characteristics would affect their response to atmospheric carbon dioxide enrichment. Plants of both species grown from cuttings were harvested after 54 days of growth in controlled environment growth chambers at 350, 675, or 1,000 μl/liter CO2. The biomass of Japanese honeysuckle was increased 135% at 675 μ∗∗∗l/liter CO2 and 76% at 1,000 μl/liter CO2 after 54 days. Morphologically, the main effect of CO2 enrichment was to triple the number of branches and to increase total branch length six times. Enhanced and accelerated branchingalso increased total leaf area 50% at elevated CO2 concentrations. In coral honeysuckle, total biomass was only 40% greater in the elevated CO2 treatments. Branching was quadrupled but had not proceeded long enough to affect total leaf area. Main stem height was increased 36% at 1,000 μl/liter CO2. The much less significant height response of other woody erect growth forms suggests that vines may increase in importance during competition if atmospheric CO2 concentrations increase as predicted. The impact of Japanese honeysuckle in the United States may become more serious.  相似文献

—A rapid accumulation of [3H]GABA occurs in slices of rat cerebral cortex incubated at 25° or 37° in a medium containing [3H]GABA. Tissue medium ratios of almost 100:1 are attained after a 60 min incubation at 25°. At the same temperature no labelled metabolites of GABA were found in the tissue or the medium. The process responsible for [3H]GABA uptake has many of the properties of an active transport mechanism: it is temperature sensitive, requires the presence of sodium ions in the external medium, is inhibited by dinitrophenol and ouabain, and shows saturation kinetics. The estimated Km value for GABA is 2·2 × 10?5m , and Vmax is 0·115 μmoles/min/g cortex. There is only negligible efflux of the accumulated [3H]GABA when cortical slices are exposed to a GABA-free medium. [3H]GABA uptake was not affected by the presence of large molar excesses of glycine, l -glutamic acid, l -aspartic acid, or β-aminobutyrate, but was inhibited in the presence of l -alanine, l -histidine, β-hydroxy-GABA and β-guanidinopropionate. It is suggested that the GABA uptake system may represent a possible mechanism for the inactivation of GABA or some related substance at inhibitory synapses in the cortex.  相似文献

—Rat brain contains all three of the enzymes required for de novo synthesis of the methyl group of methionine (serine transhydroxymethylase, methylene reductase, and [B12]transmethylase) in activities comparable to those found in liver and kidney. The activities of methylene reductase in female kidney, and of [B12]transmethylase in female brain and kidney, are higher than in the corresponding male tissues. Liver and kidney extracts contain an inhibitor of methylene reductase not present in brain extracts. This inhibitor differs from S-adenosylmethionine (SAM), which also inhibits methylene reductase in both liver and brain homogenates. The administration of l -DOPA to rats, which has been previously shown to deplete brain S-adenosylmethionine, also reduces the activity of brain [B12]transmethylase if assayed without added SAM. Since SAM is required for activity of this enzyme, its decreased activity probably results from the decline in brain SAM concentration. De now synthesis of methyl groups could be a mechanism by which the brain maintains its level of methionine in the face of increased methyl group utilization after administration of l -DOPA.  相似文献

Abstract— 1. Whereas exogenous l -glutamate enters rat brain cortex slices incubated in a glucose-physiological saline medium by both low affinity (Km= 0.7 mm ) and high affinity (Km= 27?30 μM) processes, the uptake of d -glutamate occurs only by a low affinity (Km= 2mm ) system. 2. d -glutamate appears to release l -glutamate from incubated rat brain cortex slices only to a very small extent, whether the tissue l -glutamate is of endogenous or exogenous origin. 3. Competitive inhibition takes place between l - and d -glutamates at the low affinity carrier. This indicates that a common carrier exists for l - and d -glutamates for the low affinity uptake process. 4. Apparently non-competitive inhibition by d -glutamate of l -glutamate uptake occurs at the high affinity carrier, but the affinity of d -glutamate for this carrier is about 0.4% of that of l -glutamate. 5. Both d -, and l -glutamate exchange freely with labelled d -glutamate taken up by preliminary incubation of the brain slices with this amino acid. Whereas l -glutamate exchanges freely with labelled l -glutamate taken up by preliminary incubation, d -glutamate shows little or no exchange. 6. The uptake of labelled d -glutamate by exchange diffusion into brain slices previously loaded with unlabelled d -glutamate proceeds by a low affinity system. Therefore, the process of exchange diffusion does not necessarily involve a high affinity uptake component. 7. Whereas ouabain suppresses both high and low affinity concentrative uptakes of l - and d -glutamate it has little apparent effect on the exchange diffusion process. 8. Sensitivity to tetrodotoxin of evoked release of l - and d -glutamates, taken up by brain slices by preliminary incubation with these amino acids, indicates that the major proportion of the uptake of exogenous l - or d -glutamate proceeds into non-neuronal structures (presumably the glia). 9. At 0°C non-carrier mediated (passive) diffusion of labelled d - and l -glutamate takes place in brain slices.  相似文献

Many conclusions concerning plant responses to CO2 enrichment have been based on assumptions of increased leaf size derived from observations of average leaf area measured at some time well into the growth period. The objectives of this study were to study the effect of elevated CO2 on 1) the timing of mainstem leaflet appearance, 2) the rate and duration of leaflet expansion, and 3) the final area of individual leaflets of soybeans (Glycine max [L.] Merr. cv. Bragg) grown from seed at 348, 502, and 645 μl 1–1 CO2 concentrations. Central leaflet areas from mainstem trifoliolates 1–6 were measured every two days from time of appearance to full expansion. Leaflets tended to appear earlier in elevated CO2 treatments; leaflets 2 through 6 appeared an average of 0.4 days earlier in the 502 μl 1–1 treatment and 1.2 days earlier in the 645 μl 1–1 treatment than in the 349 μl 1–1 treatment. Relative rates of expansion were different among leaflets in their response to elevated CO2; expansion rates of leaflets 1 and 4 were significantly higher at the highest CO2 concentration. However, final area of leaflets was not affected by CO2, or (in leaflet 5 only) was slightly smaller at the highest CO2 treatment. Apparently, higher expansion rates of leaflets 1 and 4 at high CO2 were offset by a tendency for decreased duration of expansion. It appears that there are morphological constraints on final leaflet area in soybean seedlings which limit the effects of elevated CO2 on the early development of mainstem leaf area.  相似文献

Abstract— A correlation has been attempted between the uptake characteristics of l - and d -homocysteate and the time courses of neuronal excitation by these and other amino acids related to l -glutamate. The uptake of l - and d -homocysteate and of l -[35S]homocysteate was studied in individual slices of rat cerebral cortex at 37°C. Tissue: medium ratios attained over l0 min for the unlabelled enantiomers at 2.5 mM were 3.7 for l -homocysteate but only 0.8 for the d -isomer. The uptake of l -[35S]homocysteate over the concentration range 0.09 μm -2 mm can be attributed mainly to a low-affinity transport process with Km approx 3 mm and Vmax 1.7 μmol/g/min, but a high-affinity process of low Vmax may make a minor contribution at the lower concentrations within this range. In terms of dependence on energy metabolism and [Na+], and on inhibition by p-chloromercuriphenylsulphonate, ouabain and structural analogues of the amino acid, the main uptake system for L-[35S]homocysteate appears to be similar to that mediating low-affinity uptake of l -glutamate and other acidic amino acids. d -Homocysteate was but a weak inhibitor of this uptake system compared with other structural analogues. The time courses of excitation by 6 amino acids were determined by microelectrophoretic application to rat spinal neurones. d -Homocysteate induced responses with recovery times considerably longer than those of the other amino acids; this correlates with the absence of rapid uptake systems demonstrated for this amino acid in cortical tissue. d -Glutamate and l -homocysteate, which are only accumulated by low-affinity transport mechanisms, induced responses with recovery periods similar to those of l -glutamate, l -aspartate and d -aspartate, which are accumulated by both high- and low-affinity uptake systems. Although contributions of other factors to the observed time courses, such as rates of association and dissociation of the amino acid-receptor complexes, cannot be excluded, the present results are consistent with the hypothesis that low-affinity uptake systems of high Vmax play an important role in the rapid termination of the effects of amino acid excitants.  相似文献

Summary The production of sorbitol and gluconic acid by toluene-treated, permeabilized cells of Zymomonas mobilis has been evaluated. From a 60% total sugar solution (300 g/l glucose and 300 g/l fructose), a sorbitol concentration of 290 g/l and a gluconic acid concentration of 283 g/l were achieved after 15 h in a batch process using free toluene-treated cells. A continuous process with immobilized cells was developed and only a small loss of enzyme activity (less than 5%) was evident after 120 h. With a strongly basic anion exchange resin and an eluent of 0.11 M Na2B4O7/0.11 M H3BO3, good separation of sorbitol and gluconic acid was achieved.  相似文献

A small hybrid wastewater treatment system consisting of a settling tank in series with an anaerobic filter-reed (Phragmites communis) treatment cell was evaluated and compared with a similar plant-free system. Data demonstrated that by combining anaerobic filters, also referred to as attached film filters, and vascular aquatic plants a synergistic effect is produced which increases the treatment efficiency of each individual system. The plant-free system reduced the BOD5 from 114 to 31 mg/l in 6 h as compared to a reduction of 110 to 9 mg/l in the anaerobic filter-reed system in the same length of time. The BOD5 and TSS after 24 h in each component of plant-free system were reduced from 114 mg/l to 14 mg/l and 51 to 15 mg/l, respectively. Under the same conditions, the hybrid system reduced the BOD5 from 110 to 3 mg/l and the TSS from 68 to 6 mg/l. The hybrid system also reduced the total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN) from 16.1 to 2.9 mg/l, total phosphorus (TP)from 4.4 to 2.0 mg/l, and the ammonia (NH3-N)from 12.4 to 0.6 mg/l after 24 h of exposure while the plant-free system demonstrated insignificant reduction of these components.  相似文献

—l -Glutamine is taken up into rat brain slices by a specific‘high affinity’uptake system (Km 52 μm ) which is not influenced by high concentrations of l -glutamate and l -asparagine. The uptake system appears to be associated with cellular structures that do not survive homogenization under conditions which yield synaptosomes. The‘high affinity’uptake of glutamine is dependent on the external sodium ion concentration and can be inhibited by p-chloromercuriphenylsulphonate, amino-oxyacetic acid, ouabain, dibenamine and allylglycine. The effects of several inhibitors indicate that l -asparagine uptake is mediated by a system different from the‘high affinity’system mediating l -glutamine uptake.  相似文献

The effect of insulin-induced hypoglycemia on serum thyroid hormone concentrations was studied in nine healthy individuals. Before, during and after the hypoglycemia blood samples were taken for measurement of the concentrations of glucose, thyroxine (T4), triiodothyronine (T3), reverse triiodothyronine (rT3), catecholamines and pituitary hormones.There was no change in the mean serum T4 level (± the standard error of the mean) of 67 ± 2 μg/l. However, the T3 concentrations rose from a mean basal level of 1.86 ± 0.06 μg/l to a mean peak of 2.51 ± 0.21 μg/l (P < 0.01) at 45 minutes after the insulin injection, and the rT3 concentrations fell from a mean basal level of 0.184 ± 0.008 μg/l to a mean nadir of 0.171 ± 0.022 μg/l (not a significant change). The mean peak epinephrine level was 545 ± 103 ng/l and it occurred between 30 and 45 minutes after the insulin injection; the mean peak norepinephrine level was 584 ± 114 ng/l and it occurred between 30 and 90 minutes after the injection. The growth hormone levels reached a mean peak of 26.1 ± 4.8 μg/l and the plasma cortisol levels rose to 215 ± 9 μg/l. The mean basal prolactin level was 8.5 ± 0.9 μg/l; in five subjects there was a rise to a mean peak of 50.6 ± 14.6 μg/l, whereas in the remaining four no significant increase occurred. No correlation was found between the changes in the serum T3 concentration and any of the other factors studied.It was concluded that acute hypoglycemia is associated with a rapid increase in the serum T3 concentration.  相似文献

Abstract– (1) The uptake and release of glutamic acid by guinea-pig cerebral cortex slices and rat synaptosomal fractions were studied, comparing the naturally occurring l - and non-natural d -isomers. Negligible metabolism of d -glutamic acid was observed in the slices. (2) Whereas in the cerebral slices the accumulation of glutamic acid was almost the same for the two isomers, d -glutamic acid was accumulated into the synaptosomal fraction at a markedly lower rate than was the L-isomer. (3) The uptake systems for d -isomer into the slices and synaptosomal fraction were found to be of single component, in contrast with the two component systems, high and low affinity components, for the uptake of l -glutamic acid. The apparent Km values for the uptake of d -glutamic acid into the slices and synaptosomal fraction were comparable with those reported for the low affinity components for l -isomer. The uptake systems for d -glutamic acid were dependent on the presence of Na+ ions in the medium, like those for l -glutamic acid and GABA. (4) The evoked release of radioactive preloaded d -glutamic acid was observed both from the slices and synaptosomal fraction following stimulation by high K+ ions in the medium. From these observations, it is evident that the evoked release of an amino acid by depolarization in vitro is not necessarily accompanied by a high affinity uptake process. (5) The uptake of l -glutamic acid, expecially into the synaptosomal fraction, was highly resistant to ouabain. On the other hand, the uptake rate of d -glutamic acid and GABA into the synaptosomal fraction was inhibited by varying concentrations of ouabain in accordance with the inhibition for brain Na-K ATPase. (6) The uptake of l -glutamic acid into subfractions of the P2 fraction was studied in relation to the distribution of the ‘synaptosomal marker enzymes’. An attempt to correlate the activities of enzymes of glutamic acid metabolism with the uptake of l -glutamic acid into the synaptosomal fraction from various parts of brain was unsuccessful. The high affinity uptake of l -glutamic acid was found to be very active in the synaptosomal fraction from any part of brain examined.  相似文献

Aster pilosus Willd. (aster, C3) and Andropogon virginicus L. (broomsedge, C4) were grown in growth chambers at 26/20 C day/night temperatures with a PPFD of 1,000 μmol s–1 m–2. Water was withheld for a 2-wk drought period under three CO2 concentrations (approximately 380, 500, and 650 μl 1–1). There were significant effects of CO2 enrichment on aster so that drought stress did not occur in plants grown with CO2 enrichment. Non-watered plants with CO2 enrichment had greater leaf water potentials, greater photosynthetic rates, and greater total dry wt than non-watered plants grown at 380 μl 1–1 CO2. The response of broomsedge to drought was the same in all CO2 treatments and there was no significant interaction of CO2 enrichment and drought. The decreased severity of drought stress and the increased growth of aster with CO2 enrichment may increase its competitive ability during droughts, allowing it to persist for longer periods during succession in abandoned fields.  相似文献

Abstract— l -5-Hydroxytryptophan ( l -5-HTP) was administered intravenously to rats (12 mg/kg) after inhibition of the peripheral aromatic l -amino acid decarboxylase with l -α-hydrazino-α-methyl dopa (MK 486). The accumulation of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid in the cerebral cortex was measured 1, 2 and 4 h after injection of 5-HTP with automated assay techniques. Besides controls two groups of rats were studied: rats after inhibition of tryptophan-5-hydroxylase with p -chlorophenylalanine (pcpa) and subjects with a chronic lesion in the area of the raphe nucleus. The net accumulation of both measured 5-hydroxyindoles was diminished in rat cerebral cortex after degeneration of 5-HT containing nerve endings, compared with control animals and pcpa-treated rats. These results indicate that the formation of 5-HT in the cerebral cortex from exogenous l -5-HTP, after inhibition of the peripheral aromatic amino acid decarboxylase, occurs predominantly in 5-HT containing nerve endings possibly by a specific 5-HTP-decarboxylating enzyme.  相似文献

Kainic acid is a linear competitive inhibitor (Kis 250 μm ) of the ‘high affinity’ uptake of l -glutamic acid into rat brain slices. Kainic acid inhibits the ‘high affinity’ uptake of l -glutamic, d -aspartic and l -aspartic acids to a similar extent. Kainic acid is not actively taken up into rat brain slices and is thus not a substrate for the ‘high affinity’ acidic amino acid transport system or any other transport system in rat brain slices. Kainic acid (300 μm ) does not influence the steady-state release or potassium-stimulated release of preloaded d -aspartic acid from rat brain slices. Kainic acid binds to rat brain membranes in the absence of sodium ions in a manner indicating binding to a population of receptor sites for l -glutamic acid. Only quisqualic and l -glutamic acid inhibit kainic acid binding in a potent manner. The affinity of kainic acid for these receptor sites appears to be some 4 orders of magnitude higher than for the ‘high affinity’l -glutamic acid transport carrier. Dihydrokainic acid is approximately twice as potent as kainic acid as an inhibitor of ‘high affinity’l -glutamic acid uptake but is some 500 times less potent as an inhibitor of kainic acid binding and at least 1000 times less potent as a convulsant of immature rats on intraperitoneal injection. Dihydrokainic acid might be useful as a ‘control uptake inhibitor’ for the effects of kainic acid on ‘high affinity’l -glutamic acid uptake since it appears to have little action on excitatory receptors. N-Methyl-d -aspartic acid is a potent convulsant of immature rats, but does not inhibit kainic acid binding or ‘high affinity’l -glutamic acid uptake. N-Methyl-d -aspartic acid might be useful as a ‘control excitant’ that activates different excitatory receptors to kainic acid and does not influence ‘high affinity’l -glutamic acid uptake.  相似文献

THE NUMBER AND POSSIBLE FUNCTIONS OF DNA-SYNTHESIZING CELLS IN HUMAN BLOOD   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The number of DNA-synthesizing cells in the blood of patients with various disorders was studied autoradiographically after incubation of blood in vitro with [3H]thymidine. The DNA-synthesizing cells were cytologically assigned to the following categories: erythroid, myeloid, lymphoplasmacytoid and unidentifiable (monocytoid or blast-like) cells. The following patient categories were studied: mitral valvular disease (samples obtained from peripheral vein, pulmonary artery and left auricle), ‘autoimmune diseases’(systemic lupus erythematosus, schleroderma, Hashimoto's thyroiditis, immunohaemolytic anaemia), patients with depressed haemopoiesis (aplastic anaemia, nitrogen-mustard induced bone-marrow hypoplasia) and with increased haemopoiesis (haemolytic anaemia, pernicious anaemia before and during initial vitamin-B12 therapy, red-cell mass regeneration after haemorrhage or iron deficiency) and patients with bacterial infection. In all conditions studied, the number of labelled monocytoid and blast-like cells varied between 0 and 4/μl. Similarly, the number of labelled lympho-plasmo-cytoid cells was consistently low (0–8/μl) in all cases studied except two, where values of 37 and 63/μl were found. Both these patients had severe bacterial infections. The function(s) and potential(s) of these cells are discussed. The fate of the blast-like and monocytoid cells remains obscure. The lympho-plasmocytoid cells probably serve an immunological function, perhaps by disseminating immune responses. Whether or not some DNA-synthesizing cells in the blood are haemopoietic stem cells cannot be decided from the available evidence.  相似文献

The pharmacokinetics of ibuprofen enantiomers were investigated in a crossover study in which seven healthy male volunteers received single oral doses of 800 mg racemic ibuprofen as a soluble granular formulation (sachet) containing L-arginine (designated trade name: Spedifen®), 400 mg (-)R-ibuprofen arginine or 400 mg (+)S-ibuprofen arginine. Plasma levels of both enantiomers were monitored up to 480 minutes after drug intake using an enantioselective analytical method (HPLC with ultraviolet detection) with a quantitation limit of 0.25 mg/l. Substantial inter-subject variability in the evaluated pharmacokinetic parameters was observed in the present study. After (+)S-ibuprofen arginine, the following mean pharmacokinetic parameters ±SD were calculated for (+)S-ibuprofen: tmax 28.6 ± 28.4 min; Cmax 36.2 ± 7.7 mg/l; AUC 86.4 ± 14.9 mg · h/l; t½ 105.2 ± 20.4 min. After (-)R-ibuprofen arginine, the following mean pharmacokinetic parameters were calculated for (+)S-ibuprofen and (-)R-ibuprofen, respectively: tmax 90.0 ± 17.3 and 50.5 ± 20.5 min; Cmax 9.7 ± 3.0 and 35.3 ± 5.0 mg/l; AUC 47.0 ± 17.2 and 104.7 ± 27.7 mg · h/l; t½ 148.1 ± 63.6 and 97.7 ± 23.3 min. After racemic ibuprofen arginine, the following mean pharmacokinetic parameters were calculated for (+)S- and (-)R-ibuprofen, respectively: tmax 30.7 ± 29.1 and 22.9 ± 29.8 min.; Cmax 29.9 ± 5.6 and 25.6 ± 4.4 mg/l; AUC 105.1 ± 23.0 and 65.3 ± 15.0 mg · h/l; t½ 136.6 ± 20.7 and 128.6 ± 45.0 min. Tmax values of S(+)- and (-)R-ibuprofen after a single dose of 400 mg of each enantiomer did not differ significantly from the corresponding parameters obtained after a single dose of 800 mg of racemic ibuprofen arginine, indicating that the absorption rate of (-)R- and (+)S-ibuprofen is not different when the two enantiomers are administered alone or as a racemic compound. An average of 49.3 ± 9.0% of a dose of the (-)R-ibuprofen arginine was bioinverted into its antipode during the study period (480 minutes post-dosing). The percent bioinversion during the first 30 minutes after (-)R-ibuprofen arginine intake averaged 8.1 ± 3.9%. The mean AUC of (+)S-ibuprofen calculated after 800 mg racemic ibuprofen arginine (105.1 ± 23.0 mg · h/l) was lower than the mean AUC value obtained by summing the AUCs of (+)S-ibuprofen after administration of 400 mg (+)S-ibuprofen arginine and 400 mg (-)R-ibuprofen arginine (133.4 ± 26.6 mg · h/l). In conclusion, the administration of Spedifen® resulted in very rapid absorption of the (+)S-isomer (eutomer) with tmax values much lower than those observed for this isomer when conventional oral solid formulations such as capsules or tablets of racemic ibuprofen are administered. Exposure of Lemma sp. to SO2 resulted in an increased activity of superoxide dismutase. About 3 to 4 fold increase in the activity was observed within 30 minutes after the plants were fumigated with 10 ml/l of SO2. Paraquat, a well known superoxide generator, doubled the enzyme activity after 1 hour of treatment with 0.1 mM paraquat. Superoxide dismutase activity was also enhanced by cadmium treatment but the response was not immediate. Optimum increase in the activity of enzyme was observed after 4 days of treatment with 40 mg/l of cadmium in the medium. Treatment with H2O2 very clearly inhibited the activity of superoxide dismutase in Lemna.  相似文献

A biofilter composed of yeasts and cassava peel was used to detoxify fertilizer plant effluent. The biological oxygen demand was reduced on treatment from a range of 1200–1400 mg/l to a range 135–404 mg/l. The ammonia-nitrogen (NH3–N) and nitrate-nitrogen (NO3–N) were reduced after treatment from 1000 to 10 mg/l and from 100 to 17.6 mg/l, respectively. The biofilter is simple and easy to handle with high efficiency of 98%.  相似文献

The essential oil of Tanacetum balsamita L. was tested against Callosobruchus maculatus F. at the rates of 5.12, 7.23, 10.19, 14.36 and 20.24?μl/l?air for adults and 5.3, 8.5, 10.8, 13.7 and 17.4?μl/l?air for eggs. All experiments were conducted at 27?±?1?°C and 65?±?5% relative humidity. Mortality was counted after 24, 48 and 72?h of exposure and all adults (dead and alive) were taken out of the vials and the vials were left at the same conditions for further 35?days to assess progeny production. For mortality of eggs, unhatched eggs were counted after 7?days. The adults treated with oil were more susceptible than eggs. At highest dose (20.24?μl/l?air) mortality of adults after 72?h, received 75.2%, but this amount for egg at 17.4?μl/l?air after 72?h was 49.06%. The lowest LC50 value on 72?h was observed in adults (1.96?μl/l?air). Also, the lowest LC95 value on 72?h was observed in adults (42.86?μl/l?air). The percentage of reduced progeny on 72?h was 50.92% at 20.24?μl/l?air. Our results suggest that T. balsamita can be used as an alternative to synthetic insecticides but higher dose may be needed.  相似文献

The floating, stoloniferous plant, Eichhornia crassipes, has high rates of productivity and rapidly invades new sites. Because the transport of carbon among connected ramets is known to increase the growth of clonal plants, we asked whether there is intraclonal carbon transport in E. crassipes. Because net photosynthesis of E. crassipes is significantly higher at high levels of atmospheric CO2, we also asked if high CO2 can change patterns of carbon transport in ways that might modify clonal growth. We exposed individual ramets within groups of connected ramets to 14CO2 for 15–45 min and measured the distribution of 14C in the group after 4 days of growth at 350, 700, 1,400, or 2,800 μ1 1−-1 CO2. At 350 μ1 1−-1 CO2, a parent ramet exported approximately 10% of the 14C that it assimilated to its first rooted offspring ramet. The offspring exported a similar percentage of the l4C it assimilated toward the parent; two-thirds of this 14C was retained by the parent, and one-third moved into new offspring of the parent. In all ramets, imported carbon moved into leaves as well as roots. At the higher levels of CO2, the percentage of assimilated carbon exported from a parent ramet to the leaf blades of its first offspring was lower by half. High CO2 had little other effect on carbon transport. E. crassipes maintains bidirectional transport of carbon between ramets even under uniform and favorable environmental conditions and when external CO2 levels are very high.  相似文献
