Continuous depletion of the stratospheric ozone layer has resulted in an increase in solar ultraviolet-B (UV-B; 280–315 nm) radiation reaching the Earth's surface. The consequences for aquatic phototrophic organisms of this small change in the solar spectrum are currently uncertain. UV radiation has been shown to adversely affect a number of photochemical and photobiological processes in a wide variety of aquatic organisms, such as cyanobacteria, phytoplankton and macroalgae. However, a number of photosynthetic organisms counteract the damaging effects of UV-B by synthesizing UV protective compounds such as mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs) and the cyanobacterial sheath pigment, scytonemin. The aim of this contribution is to discuss the responses of algae and cyanobacteria to solar UV-B radiation and the role of photoprotective compounds in mitigating UV-B damage.  相似文献

Natural product compounds are the source of numerous therapeutic agents. Recent progress to discover drugs from natural product sources has resulted in compounds that are being developed to treat cancer, resistant bacteria and viruses and immunosuppressive disorders. Many of these compounds were discovered by applying recent advances in understanding the genetics of secondary metabolism in actinomycetes, exploring the marine environment and applying new screening technologies. In many instances, the discovery of a novel natural product serves as a tool to better understand targets and pathways in the disease process. This review describes recent progress in drug discovery from natural sources including several examples of compounds that inhibit novel drug targets.  相似文献

Agglutinating activity often varies both between and within the algal species assayed. However, it is difficulty to interpret such variation without further analysis. We report a statistical analysis of agglutinating activities against human, cow, sheep, and pig erythrocytes, using cell extracts from 43 taxa (strains) of freshwater microalgae. Most of the extracts agglutinated erythrocytes from at least one of the sources, but pig erythrocytes appeared to be most suitable for the detection of agglutination reactions. Chlorella cell extracts preferentially agglutinated human erythrocytes, whereas extracts of other taxa were less active against mammalian erythrocytes. Cluster analysis generated four distinct subclusters of taxa, characterized by different specificities for antigens or carbohydrate receptors on the erythrocytes. Principal component analysis further separated the agglutination characteristics of Chlamydomonas from Chlorella on the first two components. Specificity for pig erythrocytes accounted for most of the clustering or grouping of algal taxa in multivariate analysis. However, clustering or grouping patterns of Chlorella species on haemagglutinating activity resembled that based on DNA sequences, revealing a possible genetic connection of agglutinins and their biochemical characteristics in algal cells. Variability of agglutination reactions among the algae investigated is simplified and interpreted most easily using multivariate analysis.  相似文献

As part of an ongoing project to substantially increase knowledge of the marine algal flora of the French Pacific territory of New Caledonia, a survey of the Nouméa region was conducted that has resulted in the discovery of 41 previously unrecorded species of macroalgae, including 1 Chlorophyta, 1 Phaeophyceae (Heterokontophyta) and 39 Rhodophyta. Among the biogeographically interesting new records are the green macroalga Rhipilia penicilloides N’Yeurt et Keats (previously endemic to the islands of Fiji some 1000 km east of new Caledonia) and the brown alga Cutleria mollis Allender et Kraft (originally described from Lord Howe Island some 1000 km to the south). The red alga Gloiophloea articulata Weber‐van Bosse, known only from its initial discovery in 1928 from the Mascarene Islands in the western Indian Ocean, is now recorded in the deep‐water channels of the Nouméa region of New Caledonia. The widely distributed Indian Ocean species Corynomorpha prismatica (J. Agardh) J. Agardh has its easternmost distribution record from this area, and Dotyella hawaiiensis (Doty et Wainwright) Womersley et Shepley is recorded for the first time outside its central‐Pacific distribution. These new discoveries represent a 12% increase in the total number of species (377) that are reliably known from New Caledonia.  相似文献

The search for environment-friendly and non-toxic antifouling (AF) paint components has led to the investigation of natural products from seaweeds. The defence metabolites used by algae to deter unwanted epibiosis have potential for harnessing and use in AF applications. Crude algal extracts may provide a suitable mixture of compounds with AF potency. Crude ethanol extracts of the macroalgae Chondrus crispus (Rhodophyceae), from both dried and fresh sources were tested and compared using bioassays based on five marine bacterial strains, five phytoplankton strains and two macroalgae to assess the AF efficacy. Dried extract from the algae had a lower minimum inhibitory concentration at 25 μg mL−1 against the growth of bacteria and phytoplankton species than that from the fresh source. Macroalgae tests indicated that the extracts had an anti-germination activity 25–50 μg mL−1 against both Undaria pinnatifida and Ulva intestinalis spores. A field trial of AF paint incorporating crude extract indicated an initial AF potency lasting six weeks.  相似文献

Phycobilisomes of red algae and cyanobacteria contain small amounts of nonpigmented polypeptides in addition to the major constituent biliprotein pigments. The localization of these polypeptides is analyzed by gel electrophoresis of phycobilisome fragments obtained by selective dissociation and subsequent separation. Five groups of biliprotein aggregates are determined, belonging to the 6, 11, 16, 18 and 23 S categories. Accessory nonpigmented high molecular weight proteins (80,000 MW) are exclusively bound to phycobilisome core fractions and thylakoids, thus apparently serving as links between the phycobilisomes and the photosynthetic units of the thylakoids. In contrast, smaller nonpigmented accessory polypeptides of 20,000 to 60,000 MW are preferably found in the peripheral biliprotein stacks. They may either form a compatible link between the phycobilisome core and periphery or bind and co-polymerize with hexameric biliproteins in the peripheral stacks to enhance or effect binding of the aggregates. The microalgae Neochloris wimmeri, Scenedesmus vacuolatus, Scotiellopsisoocystiformis, Chlorella zofingiensis and Protosiphon botryoides were grown under secondarycarotenoid inductive conditions. The results indicatethat nitrogen deficiency and high light intensity arepotential inducers of astaxanthin formation in thefive microalgae studied. All these microalgaeaccumulate significant quantities of secondarycarotenoids, mainly as astaxanthin esters andcanthaxanthin. They also showed high resistance toenvironmental conditions. All these qualities makethese microalgae good candidates for successfulculture in open ponds.  相似文献

Abstract

In this study, the decolorization efficiency of seven microalgae isolates; Nostoc muscorum, Nostoc humifusum, Spirulina platensis, Anabaena oryzae, Wollea saccata, Oscillatoria sp. and Chlorella vulgaris was investigated for dye decolorization. The highest decolorization percentages of Brazilwood, Orange G, and Naphthol Green B dyes (99.5%, 99.5%, and 98.5%, respectively) were achieved by Chlorella vulgaris. However, the maximum efficiency for dye decolorization percentages of CV and malachite green dyes were exhibited by A. oryzae (97.4%) and W. saccata (93.3%). Ligninolytic enzymes activity assay was carried out for laccase and lignin peroxidase enzymes, which revealed a high efficiency of the C. vulgaris, A. oryzae and W. saccata to lignin containing compound degradation. The highest laccase production recorded by C. vulgaris with Brazilwood, Orange G, and Naphthol Green B dyes (665.0, 678.6, and 659.5?U/ml, respectively). Similarly, C. vulgaris gave a high lignin peroxidase enzyme production with the above three dyes respectively (306.00, 298.34, and 311.45?U/ml). In addition, A. oryzae and W. saccata showed the highest production of the laccase enzyme (634.6 and 577.45?U/ml, respectively) with CV and malachite green dyes. The degradation products have been characterized after decolorization and verified using FTIR analysis. The high decolorization percentages achieved by C. vulgaris, A. oryzae and W. saccata make them potential candidates for bioremediation and pre-processing to remove dyes from textile effluents.  相似文献

Allelopathic interactions among phytoplankton species are regarded as one of the important factors contributing to phytoplankton species competition and succession. The role and extent of allelopathic effects of blooming freshwater cyanobacteria on other phytoplankton species in eutrophied waters, however, are still unknown. We examined the allelopathic effect of Microcystis aeruginosa on two common green algae (Scenedesmus quadricauda, Chlorella pyrenoidosa) and a diatom (Cyclotella meneghiniana) by adding exudates from different growth phases and in co-culture tests. Exudates of M. aeruginosa from the exponential growth phase and the stationary phase significantly inhibited the growth of S. quadricauda, C. pyrenoidosa and C. meneghiniana, whereas those from the decline phase increased their growth. The presence of M. aeruginosa extremely inhibited the growth of all tested species in co-cultures within 24 h. Our results indicate that under the tested environmental conditions (25 °C, light 80 μmol quanta m−2 s−1, manual shaking twice a day), allelopathic effects of M. aeruginosa on other phytoplankton species can significantly contribute to their competitive success.  相似文献

The isolation of a halophilic blue-green alga, Aphanothece halophytica, from Great Salt Lake is described. The organism was cultured from waters with salinities up to saturated NaCl (about 30% w/v). It has an optimum salinity for growth of about 16% NaCl, but can grow very slowly even in saturated NaCl. Based on the study of the Great Salt Lake organism, and on a review of the earlier literature, it is concluded that despite recent reports to the contrary, true halophilic blue-green algae do exist.  相似文献

Rapid extraction of phycobiliproteins from cultured cyanobacteria samples   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Cyanobacteria are a valuable and ubiquitous component of marine picophytoplankton that contribute significantly to total carbon biomass and primary productivity of the oceans. They contain water soluble, natively highly fluorescent proteins, phycobiliproteins, that can be considered ideal marker pigments for understanding the distribution and trophic dynamics of picoplankton populations. However, there is no standard protocol for extracting and quantitating these proteins from cyanobacterial cells. Ideally, the cells would be disrupted quickly and efficiently with complete extraction and recovery of the released proteins. For that purpose, we describe a method for extracting phycobiliproteins from a Synechococcus CCMP 833 cyanobacteria culture that utilizes 3% 3-[(3-cholamidopropyl)dimethyammonio]propanesulfonic acid (Chaps) 0.3% asolectin combined with nitrogen cavitation. Extraction efficiencies of greater than 85% were achieved by this method, which requires less than 3h. The analysis of the extracted samples was carried out by capillary electrophoresis with laser-induced fluorescence detection.  相似文献

Nearly two hundred microalgal strains (174 Chlorophyta and 23 Cyanobacteria) were screened against some bacteria, filamentous fungi and yeasts using a disc-diffusion type bioassay. From this initial screening, 10 Chlorophyta strains from three genera (Desmococcus, Chlorella and Scenedesmus) were selected because of their high antimicrobial activity. These 10 strains were partially purified and tested using MIC antimicrobial and microtiter IC50 anticancer assays. These preselected algal strains showed a high incidence of antibacterial activity against both Gram-positive (9 out of 10 species) and Gram-negative (7 out of 10 species) bacteria. The extracts were also effective against some tumour cell lines.  相似文献

Host plant choice by herbivores may be constrained by the spatial arrangement of plants with selection of poor quality hosts being more likely if preferred hosts are locally rare. I tested whether the presence of a herbivorous marine amphipod, Peramphithoe parmerong, on a poor quality host could be explained by the relative abundance and spatial arrangement of alternative brown algal hosts. Amphipods strongly preferred the high quality Sargassum linearifolium over the poor quality Padina crassa in laboratory assays with a higher tendency to select Padina crassa when it was relatively more abundant. In the field, however, adults colonised both hosts to equal densities. Rates of colonisation were independent of host quality but strongly affected by the identity of neighbouring hosts with those algae in close proximity to S. linearifolium receiving far greater densities of amphipods than those surrounded by Padina crassa. There was no evidence that the presence of adult Peramphithoe parmerong on Padina crassa was due to local scarcity of S. linearifolium. In contrast, the distribution and behaviour of juveniles were predictable from differences in food quality, with most inhabiting the high quality S. linearifolium and few emigrating from this host. The success of a simple adaptive model based on food quality to predict juvenile, but not adult, behaviour indicates that the relative importance of food quality varies with age, and that other factors are important determinants of adult movements among hosts.  相似文献

Macroalgae possess different defense mechanisms in response to herbivory. Some species produce anti-herbivore secondary metabolites, but production of these substances can be costly. Therefore, algae may produce defensive metabolites only in response to herbivory (inducible defense) or defend particular parts of the alga differentially (within-alga variation). In the present study, we examined whether two species of brown algae from the SE-Pacific show evidence of inducible chemical defense (non-polar compounds) or within-alga variation of defense, which we estimated in form of palatability of differently treated algae to amphipod grazers (with live algae and agar-based food containing non-polar algal extracts). In Glossophora kunthii (C. Agardh) J. Agardh, we observed an increase in palatability after algae were acclimated for 12 days without grazers. Subsequent addition of grazers for 12 days then resulted in a reduction of palatability indicating the existence of inducible defense. After removal of grazers for 12 days, these induced effects again disappeared. The reaction of G. kunthii was triggered even by the mere presence of grazers, which suggests that this alga can respond to waterborne cues by reducing palatability. Effects were only found for agar-based food containing non-polar extracts, but not for live algae, suggesting that some parts of the algae are undefended. Our second experiment on within-alga variation confirmed that only apical (growth region) and basal parts (near the holdfast region) of G. kunthii are defended against herbivores. For the second species, Macrocystis integrifolia Bory, the first experiment revealed no induction of defense, while the second experiment on within-alga variation showed that amphipods avoided basal parts and in particular stipes of M. integrifolia but only in live algae. Although both studied algal species differed substantially in their defensive strategies, their reaction was independent of the presence or absence of UV radiation. Thus, it appears that UV effects play only a minor role in anti-herbivore defense, which is in accordance with most previous studies.  相似文献

The analysis of the currently available data for morphologically unambiguously defined freshwater blue-green algae indicates that besides (sub-)cosmopolitan species, taxa with a more restricted distribution also exist. Many of these have a holarctic or pantropic distribution. It is hypothesized that, besides the distribution of ecological niches, temperature is one of the main controlling factors restricting species to particular latitudinal zones. Furthermore, the presence of species with a regional distribution (endemics) can not be ruled out, indicating that other factors must be considered. The possible role of dispersal capacities and of dispersal rates in relation to the earth history and to the speciation of blue-green algae is discussed.  相似文献
