Water, osmotic, and pressure potentials of soybean (Glycine max [L.] Merrill) embryos and related maternal tissues were measured during periods of seed growth and maturation to test the involvement of embryo water relations in seed maturation. Seeds were matured in situ or in an in vitro liquid culture medium in detached pods or as isolated seeds. Changes in water relations of embryo tissues were independent of maternal tissues. During seed maturation in situ, water and osmotic potentials in both embryo and maternal tissues declined sharply near the time of maximum dry weight. During in vitro seed culture with and without pods, water and osmotic potentials in axis and cotyledon tissues declined continuously during growth. Water and osmotic potentials of the seed coat, which was present only during in vitro seed culture with pods, changed little during the culture period. Positive turgor in the embryo was maintained beyond maximum dry weight and the loss of green color during in vitro culture but declined to zero at maturity in situ. The osmotic potential in embryo tissues declined from −1.1 megapascals at early pod fill to between −1.65 and −2.2 megapascals at maximum seed dry weight across all maturation environments. It is suggested that the decreasing osmotic potential in the growing soybean embryo reaches a threshold level that is associated with cessation of growth and onset of seed maturation.  相似文献

Approximately two-thirds (64%) of all dry season samples of elephant dung analysed during a 3-year study in the Main Camp subregion of Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe, contained seed and/or pod materials from Acacia erioloba . Most seeds were recovered intact and actively germinating seeds were not uncommon. Very little pod mass relative to seed mass was recovered in most instances, with pod fragments recorded from only 56% of all exhaustively sampled elephant dung piles containing A. erioloba fruit materials. Nonetheless, large pod fragments and even entire intact pods were recovered occasionally from elephant dung. Seeds and pods of A. erioloba may comprise 12% or more of total wet-weight dung mass; individual dung piles were found which contained > 5000 A. erioloba seeds. Birds and smaller mammals search out and consume A. erioloba seeds present within elephant dung piles. The findings of this study indicate that potential digestibility of A. erioloba seeds for bush elephants ( Loxodonta africana africana ) may be much higher than expected from previous studies. In controlled feeding trials with captive bush elephants (age 11–15 years old) maintained on predominantly free-range dry season diets, the estimated efficiency of digestion for A. erioloba seeds consumed in pods was 81% to 96%, with a gut-transit time of between 24.5 and 36.0 h. On the basis of throughput times determined in experimental feeding trials, potential elephant-dispersal distances of 20–50 km are predicted for A. erioloba in the Kalahari Sands landscapes of southern central Africa.  相似文献

Freshly harvested seeds of soybean (Glycine max L. Merr.) orseeds shelled, then dried, were non-viable. Seeds dried in intactpods, even when only 17% of normal size, matured into viableseeds and produced healthy plants. These seeds maintained activityof various enzymes but gained little soluble protein while air-dryingin intact pods. There was a qualitative change in seed proteinsassociated with maturation. Seeds matured in intact pods havea greater proportion of protein as slow-moving bands and havecompletely lost one fast-moving band compared with seeds shelledbefore drying. Seed maturation is a distinct phase of seed production,is independent of the parent plant, and can be imposed on theseed at many stages of development.  相似文献

The effects of exogenous methionine on growth of developingVicia faba seeds in vivo was studied. Methionine (51 or 102µmol in total) injected into the base of the pod overa period of 15 d (26–40 d after pollination) decreasedgrowth and protein accumulation in proximal seeds but increasedin distal seeds. Distal seeds of methionine injected pods accumulatedmore d. wt and protein than distal seeds of water-injected pods.However, on a pod basis methionine reduced overall seed growthand protein accumulation. Exogenous methionine caused a relative increase in legumin buta decrease in vicilin. Injected methionine also affected thecomposition of uncombined amino acids, especially those derivedfrom aspartic acid. In contrast, the amino acid compositionof the protein fraction did not change appreciably. The data suggest that seed growth is not limited by methioninebiosynthesis but seed protein composition is regulated by methionine. Components of seed yield of cv. Ultra (Lupinus albus L.) andcv. Unicrop (L. angustifolius L.) were measured when grown atthree densities. The low density (10 plants m–2) Unicropyield (34 g seed per plant) was 1.8 times that of Ultra as ithad more branches, pods and seeds per pod. Ultra seeds (310mg per seed) were heavier than Unicrop seeds (180 mg). The branchingpattern of Ultra was less dependent on plant density, henceat 93 plants m–2 it gave a higher per plant yield (7.4vs 6.4 g) than Unicrop at lower densities (83 plants m–2).Density had most influence on pod formation and only small effectson seeds per pod and seed weight. Yield components on the main-steminflorescence were influenced less by density than componentson branch inflorescences. Later formed, higher order generationsof inflorescences were most affected by increased inter- andintra-plant competition. Pod numbers on the main-stem were similarfor both species. Pods formed at higher flower nodes in Unicrop,but the lower flower nodes were less fertile than those in Ultra.Node position of flowers had no influence on seed set in main-stemUnicrop pods, but pods from higher nodes in Ultra formed fewerseeds. Immature Glycine max (L.) Merr. seeds initially at 50–70mg fresh weight were successfully grown and matured in vitroin detached pods. Surface sterilized pods were floated in aliquid medium containing 5 per cent sucrose, minerals, and glutaminein 125 ml Erlenmeyer flasks and incubated at 25 °C under350–400 µE m–1 s–1 white light. Seedswhich were matured in vitro increased tenfold in dry weight,were visually similar to commercial seeds of the same size,were tolerant to desiccation and germinated with normal seedlinggrowth. Excised pods transported dye from the pedicel to thegrowing seed within 120 min. Soya bean pod culture is a usefultechnique to study the influence of single or combinations ofchemical or environmental parameters on regulation of seed growth,seed maturation, and subsequent germination events without theconfounding interactions with the mother plant. A temporary vegetative storage protein, composed of similar 25 kilodalton and 27 kilodalton subunits, was found to be abundant in soybean (Glycine max (L.) Herr. var Hobbit) leaves, stems, pods, flower petals, germinated cotyledons, and less abundant in roots, nodules and seeds. Total pod protein was highest at 3 weeks after flowering and declined by 37% within 3 weeks during seed development. During this time the vegetative storage protein declined from 18% to 1.5% of the total pod protein and accounted for 45% of the protein lost from pods. This indicates that the vegetative storage protein makes a significant contribution to the pool of nutrients mobilized from pods for transport to developing seeds.  相似文献

The dry weight of the whole fruit, the pod wall and an enclosedseed of randomly harvested soya beans is estimated from theexternal dimensions of the attached pod. The relations betweendimensions and dry weight are independent of cultivar and growthcondition and can be used on pods from 1 cm in length untilthe seeds reach their maximum fresh weight. Dimensions of tagged pods of three cultivars of field grownsoya beans differing in time to reach maturity were measuredevery 2–3 days from initial pod elongation until maturation.Dry weights for each pod were estimated from the dimensions,and the dry weight accumulation with time was fitted to thelogistic function to find the growth rate that best characterizedthe data for each pod. The final weight, the specific growthrate and the maximum growth rate of the whole fruit, the podwall and a single seed were subjected to analysis of variance. The most significant difference between pods of these cultivarswas the specific growth rate of individual seeds, which decreasedwith increasing maturity group. There were no differences ingrowth of the pod wall. However, most of the variation was betweenindividual pods within a cultivar, where the rate of dry weightaccumulation of the whole fruit, governed largely by the seedgrowth rate times the number of seeds, was highly correlatedwith the earlier growth of the pod wall. This suggests thatthe growth of individual whole fruit was determined early inpod development and was slightly influenced by factors appliedduring the period of rapid seed growth. Glycine max (L.) Total water potential (ψ), solute potential, and turgor potential of field-grown muskmelon (Cucumis melo L.) fruit tissue (pericarp) and seeds were determined by thermocouple psychrometry at 5-day intervals from 10 to 65 days after anthesis (DAA). Fruit maturity occurred between 44 and 49 DAA, and seed germination ability developed between 35 and 45 DAA. Pericarp ψ was essentially constant at approximately −0.75 megapascal (MPa) from 10 to 25 DAA, then decreased to a minimum value of −1.89 MPa at 50 DAA before increasing to −1.58 MPa at 65 DAA. Seed ψ remained relatively constant at approximately −0.5 MPa from 10 to 30 DAA then decreased to −2.26 MPa at 50 to 60 DAA before increasing to −2.01 MPa at 65 DAA. After a rapid increase to 20 DAA, seed fresh weight declined until 30 DAA due to net water loss, despite continuing dry weight gain. As fruit and seed growth rates decreased, turgor potential initially increased, then declined to small values when growth ceased. A disequilibrium in ψ was measured between seeds and pericarp both early and late in development. From 20 to 40 DAA, the ψ gradient was from the seed to the tissue, coinciding with water loss from the seeds. From 50 to 65 DAA, seed ψ decreased, causing a reversal of the ψ gradient and a slight increase in seed water content. The partitioning of solutes between symplast and apoplast may create and maintain ψ gradients between the pericarp and seed. The low solute potential within the pericarp due to solute accumulation and loss of cellular compartmentation during ripening and sensecence may be involved in prevention of precocious germination of mature seeds.  相似文献

Previous field experiments have shown that, for the annual herb Vicia sativa, leaf area lost to herbivory results in reduced number of fruit (pods) produced per plant as well as fewer seeds per pod. We conducted a controlled garden experiment to determine the precise relationship between level of defoliation and various measures of maternal fitness through fruit and seed. We employed manual clipping of individual leaflets of newly produced leaves to 25% increments of damage (from 0% to 100%) over the entire period of development and flowering of these annual herbs, harvesting pods when filled but not dehisced. We found significant reduction in number of pods, number of seeds, total seed mass, and individual seed mass with leaf area lost. Even with the highest levels of defoliation over the life of the individual, plants still produced a substantial number of pods and seeds. Seeds produced by plants in all treatment groups showed similar percentages of germination and time to germination.  相似文献

Seed number per pod in pea is variable. After fertilization,any number of ovules may abort in the pod. This paper describesan analysis of the relationship between pod growth and seedabortion rate. Pod dry weight was highly correlated to pod lengthbefore the final stage in seed abortion. By measuring pod lengthduring the period of seed formation and counting the seeds inthe same pods at the end of this period, we show that seed numberper pod was correlated with early pod elongation. Seeds and leaves of Vicia faba L. contain considerable amounts of 4-Cl-indoleacetic acid as determined by gas-liquid chromatography and gas-liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. The unchlorinated auxin could not be detected in either leaves or seeds at different stages of development. The developmental stages of fruits and seeds were characterized by the rate of straight growth of pods, the rate of fresh weight increase, and the development of the endosperm. The peak of 4-Cl-indoleacetic acid content per seed coincides with the maximum rate of water accumulation in the seeds.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: A brassinosteroid-deficient mutant faba bean (Vicia faba 'Rinrei') shows dwarfism in many organs including pods and seeds. 'Rinrei' has normal-sized seeds together with dwarf seeds, suggesting that dwarfism in the seed may be indirectly caused by brassinosteroid deficiency. The mechanism of seed size reduction in this mutant was investigated. METHODS: The associations between seed orientation in the pod, seed numbers per pod and pod lengths with seed sizes were analysed in 'Rinrei' and the wild-type plant. KEY RESULTS: 'Rinrei' seeds are tightly arranged in pods containing two or three seeds. Seed size decreased as the number of seeds per pod increased or as the length of the pod decreased. Where no physical restriction occurred between seeds in a pod, the wild-type faba bean seeds had a nearly constant size regardless of seed number per pod or pod length. 'Rinrei' seeds in pods containing single seeds were the same size as wild-type seeds. Brassinolide treatment increased the seed size and the length of pods containing three seeds in 'Rinrei'. CONCLUSION: Seed size of 'Rinrei' is mainly regulated through a reduction of pod length due to brassinosteroid deficiency; physical restriction within pods causes a reduction in seed size. These results suggest a possible mechanism for increasing faba bean yields to optimal levels.  相似文献

在调查格木(Erythrophleum fordii)主要天然分布区及资源现状的基础上, 研究了荚果和种子的11个表型性状在8个格木天然群体内和群体间的变异规律, 探讨了种实表型变异与地理、环境因子的相关性。结果显示: 格木天然林主要分布在广西、广东和福建3省区北回归线附近低海拔地区, 大部分呈散生状态或小群体; 格木荚果和种子的长度、宽度、形态指数以及每个荚果内种子数、种子厚度和千粒重在群体间和群体内单株间均存在显著差异; 荚果性状在群体间和群体内的变异均大于种子性状; 每个荚果内种子数与荚果的长度、形态指数以及种子的长度、大小呈显著正相关, 种子长度和宽度与荚果大小、种子千粒重与荚果宽度均呈显著正相关; 荚果形态指数与经度呈显著负相关, 种子千粒重与纬度、种子宽度与海拔和年降雨量、种子形态指数与年均气温、种子大小与年降雨量均呈显著正相关。通过聚类分析可将8个格木群体分为3类: GX03单独为1类, GX01与GX02聚为1类, 其余5个群体聚为1类。研究结果为进一步开展格木保护生物学和遗传育种研究奠定了基础。  相似文献

In Pongamia pinnata only one of the two ovules develops into a seed in most of the pods. Since pollen was not found to be limiting and reduced fertilization could not completely explain the observed frequency of seed abortion, it implied an effect of postfertilization factors. Aqueous extracts of developing seeds and maternal tissue (placenta) did not influence abortion in vitro, suggesting that abortion may not be mediated by a chemical. Experimental uptake of 14C sucrose in vitro indicated that both the stigmatic and the peduncular seed have similar inherent capacities of drawing resources, but the peduncular seed is deprived of resources in the presence of the stigmatic seed. This deprivation of the peduncular seed could be offset by supplying an excess of hormones leading to the subsequent formation of two seeds in a pod. The prevalence of single-seeded pods in P. pinnata seems therefore to be a result of competition between the two seeds for maternal resources. The evolutionary significance of single-seeded pods in P. pinnata is discussed with respect to possible dispersal advantage enjoyed by such pods.  相似文献

Activities of the sucrose-cleaving enzymes, acid and neutral invertase and sucrose synthase, were measured in pods and seeds of developing snap bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) fruits, and compared with 14C-import, elongation and dry weight accumulation. During the first 10 d post-anthesis, pods elongated rapidly with pod dry weight increase lagging behind by several days. The temporal patterns of acid invertase activity and import coincided closely during the first part of pod development, consonant with a central role for this enzyme in converting imported sucrose during pod elongation and early dry weight accumulation. Later, sucrose synthase became the predominant enzyme of dry weight accumulation and was possibly associated with the development of phloem in pod walls. Sucrose synthase activity in seeds showed two peaks, corresponding to two phases of rapid import and dry weight accumulation; hence, sucrose synthase was associated with seed sink growth. Acid invertase activities in seeds were low and did not show a noticeable relationship with import or growth. All neutral invertase activities, during pod and seed development, were too low for it to have a dominant role in sucrose cleavage. Changes in activities of certain sucrose-cleaving enzymes appear to be correlated with certain sink functions, including import, storage of reserves, and biosynthetic activities. The data supports the association of specific sucrose-cleaving enzymes with the specific processes that occur in the developing pods and seeds of snap bean fruits; for example, acid invertase with pod elongation and sucrose synthase with fruit dry matter accumulation.  相似文献
