A limestone cube from Tunisia with embedded thalli of the Permian, coenocytic, cyathiform green alga, Ivanovia tebagaensis , was CT (computed tomography) scanned as a nondestructive method to study some of its morphological features. Two sets of scans were used to make three physical three-dimensional models of Ivanovia structures by rapid prototyping stereolithography or layer manufacturing: (1) an asexual reproductive bud using the initial medical CT scans; (2) a cyathiform thallus with an attached bud and a second cup fused to the bottom of the first; and (3) about ten per cent of the total rock volume. A set of high resolution scans was used to construct (2) and (3). Study of the models suggested new information on developmental stages of budding and the great extent of membrane connections.  相似文献

Differentiation of archeospores was observed from excised tissue of young thalli of various monoecious Porphyra species ( P. tenera, P. yezoensis, P. suborbiculata, P. okamurae) after 4–8 days in culture at temperatures of 20 and 25 °C. Excised tissue from adult thalli did not differentiate into archeospores, but rather regenerated directly into blades and rhizoids of foliose thalli. Tissues from young thalli of two dioecious Porphyra species ( P. dentata and P. pseudolinearis) also regenerated into blades and rhizoids after manipulation of the culture conditions. In addition, 1–2 celled tissue pieces of both monoecious and dioecious species were also seen to develop directly into blades. Polarity of regeneration of blades and rhizoids was observed in these species. These results suggest that ‘seed’ can be obtained through tissue culture instead of using conventional conchocelis culture for commercial nori aquaculture in Japan. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Life-history studies in culture were carried out on Colpomenia sinuosa (Mertens ex Roth) Derbès et Solier and Hydroclathrus clathratus (C. Agardh) Howe (Scytosiphonales, Phaeophyceae) from Japan. These species showed a heteromorphic life-history pattern with an alternation between erect thalli bearing plurilocular zoidangia and prostrate thalli bearing ectocarpoid plurilocular and unilocular zoidangia. Plurizoids released from erect and prostrate thalli developed into prostrate thalli. Unizoids, however, developed into erect thalli. Prostrate thalli produced plurilocular zoidangia in long-day conditions and unilocular zoidangia in short-day conditions at 10-20°C. Prostrate thalli of C. sinuosa formed ascocysts. Germlings of both species did not grow at 5°C.  相似文献

Regeneration of protoplasts into de novo plants was reported for a large number of seaweed species. The regeneration of protoplasts into different morphotypes as a result of epigenetic variations was discussed for the first time in this study. The loci assessed for methylation modifications in normal filamentous thalli showed a frequency of 32.43% as unmethylated DNA, 24.32% as a hemimethylated, and 20.27% as a methylation of internal cytosine at both the strands. The corresponding methylation values for disk-type thalli were 27.02%, 32.43%, and 14.86%, respectively. The hypermethylation condition was apparent in the disk-type thalli with methylation ratio of 72.97% compared to that of normal filamentous thalli with 67.56%. The frequency of methylation polymorphic sites among the two morphotypes was 53%. The present study reveals the distinct expression of cytosine methylation and is thus correlated to differential morphogenesis of plants regenerated from cultured cells. The number of protoplasts regenerating into filamentous thalli declined with increasing temperature from 15°C, 20°C, 25°C, and 30°C. The disk-type variant had higher thermal stability at 30°C over normal filamentous thalli. Further, this variant could maintain itself for more than a year in the laboratory indicating its suitability for in vitro germplasm maintenance and propagation.  相似文献

Tuckermannopsis pinastri is a lichen species found commonly on rocks and tree branches in boreal and alpine habitats in the northern United States. Members of this species produce three yellow-pigmented phenolic compounds: usnic, pinastric, and vulpinic acids. The objective of our study was to quantify the variation in concentration of the latter two of these compounds in relation to substrate factors, chlorophyll content, and thallus size. Using high-performance liquid chromatography, we analyzed 120 thalli of T. pinastri collected randomly from a single large population located at Spruce Knob, West Virginia. Although individuals were sampled from both tree and rock substrates that differed markedly in light intensity, these environmental factors were not correlated with observed variations in vulpinic or pinastric acid concentrations. Instead, compound concentrations were correlated most closely with thallus size, with small rather than large thalli having the highest concentrations of the two compounds. Small thalli did not have higher concentrations of chlorophylls than large thalli, however, which suggests that the rate of production of secondary compounds by the fungus in T. pinastri is independent of algal biomass. Inasmuch as lichen secondary compounds serve a defensive role against microorganisms and herbivores, our results suggest that small, juvenile thalli are better defended than more mature thalli.  相似文献

The influence on uptake and water loss of the structural changes experienced by Parmelia acetabulum during thallus development were investigated. Small specimens were characterized by flat lobes and a thin thallus and cortex. Large specimens appeared strongly rugose, imbricate and irregularly folded, and had a significantly thicker cortex and medulla than small thalli. Maximum water storage capacity did not differ between large and small thalli, although water retention was much higher in large thalli, presumably due to the interaction of structural characteristics and a higher boundary layer resistance. This translated into a longer duration of the period of thallus hydration in large thalli compared to small thalli. Incubation of thalli in water-vapour-saturated atmospheres induced full recovery of photosynthetic electron transport to the values before desiccation in small thalli but only induced a partial recovery in large thalli. The close correlation between photosynthetic electron transport and net photosynthesis during desiccation found in this species suggested that carbon-fixation activity could be regained to a larger extent by incubation of thalli in water vapour in small compared to large thalli. The higher ability for water vapour uptake of small thalli might allow them to efficiently use small amounts of intermittently available water or periods of high relative humidity. The significance of this differential ability to utilize water is discussed with regard to the known ecological preferences of the species.  相似文献

Large Fucales are abundant on coastal coral reefs of the Great Barrier Reef, but are often limited by the availability of inorganic nutrients. Particle loads in these reef waters are high, which is generally perceived as detrimental for aquatic plants due to a reduction of light. Here, I provide evidence that several abundant Sargassum species supplement their nutrient supply with nutrients derived from the layer of particulate matter (PM) deposited on their thalli. In experiments involving removal or addition of PM, growth rates of Sargassum spp. were up to 180% higher when particles were present on the thalli. Tissue nitrogen and phosphorus levels of thalli with a surface PM layer were 10%–30% higher than those of thalli without PM. The amount of PM deposited in situ on thalli of five species of brown algae ranged from 0.6 to 0.9 g Corg·g−1 dry weight alga, depending on the species' morphology. I suggest that a nutrient-rich diffusive boundary layer is created on the thallus surface by an epiphytic microbial community that remineralizes the particulate nutrients. When algal growth is nutrient limited, the use of particle-derived nutrients as a source alternative to nutrients in the water column may outweigh any potential adverse effects of the thallus particle layer.  相似文献

Morphological observations and molecular analyses of the red alga Grateloupia filicina (Halymeniaceae) from two geographically distant regions, eastern Asia (Japan and northern China) in the northwestern Pacific and Italy in the Mediterranean, reveal the presence of two distinct entities. Morphologically, the eastern Asian entity differs substantially from the Italian entity in the following ways: 1) thin and soft thalli with wider axes, 2) denser medullary filaments, 3) scattered reproductive structures over the entire thallus, and 4) a mature auxiliary cell that is oval and slightly larger than other ampullary cells. Phylogenetic analysis based on the ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase gene ( rbc L) sequences revealed that the eastern Asian and Italian entities are phylogenetically far apart, strongly supporting the differentiation of these two entities at the species level. The eastern Asian entity is therefore described as a new species, Grateloupia asiatica. This species can be distinguished from most known species of Grateloupia that have widely flattened thalli by its compressed to narrowly flattened axes with numerous pinnate proliferations and from a few species with similar thalli by a particular combination of features, including a gelatinous texture, mostly simple and narrower axes, a thinner cortex, and the absence of catenate proliferations.  相似文献

Crossing tests were made to determine the relationship between the identified Ulva pertusa, which commonly grows in Japan as an attached form on exposed rocks, and the floating Ulva forming "green tide" inside calm bays. The floating Ulva thalli were collected from five major green tide sites in Japan (Yokohama, Mikawa, Miyajima, Kochi and Hakata). Reproductive maturation was induced in U. pertusa and the floating thalli from each site. Mating between induced gametes was observed. It is therefore believed that the floating thalli from Yokohama, Mikawa and Miyajima were mainly U. pertusa, while those from Kochi and Hakata were of a different species (Ulva sp.1). Furthermore, the Ulva species found in Mikawa is also a species (Ulva sp.2) different from both U. pertusa and Ulva sp.1.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The superhydrophobicity of the thallus surface in one of the most SO(2)-tolerant lichen species, Lecanora conizaeoides, suggests that surface hydrophobicity could be a general feature of lichen symbioses controlling their tolerance to SO(2). The study described here tests this hypothesis. METHODS: Water droplets of the size of a raindrop were placed on the surface of air-dry thalli in 50 lichen species of known SO(2) tolerance and contact angles were measured to quantify hydrophobicity. KEY RESULTS: The wettability of lichen thalli ranges from strongly hydrophobic to strongly hydrophilic. SO(2) tolerance of the studied lichen species increased with increasing hydrophobicity of the thallus surface. Extraction of extracellular lichen secondary metabolites with acetone reduced, but did not abolish the hydrophobicity of lichen thalli. CONCLUSIONS: Surface hydrophobicity is the main factor controlling SO(2) tolerance in lichens. It presumably originally evolved as an adaptation to wet habitats preventing the depression of net photosynthesis due to supersaturation of the thallus with water. Hydrophilicity of lichen thalli is an adaptation to dry or humid, but not directly rain-exposed habitats. The crucial role of surface hydrophobicity in SO(2) also explains why many markedly SO(2)-tolerant species are additionally tolerant to other (chemically unrelated) toxic substances including heavy metals.  相似文献

Certain lichens of the genus Cladonia are effective heavy-metal-tolerant colonisers of strongly contaminated and disturbed sites. Among them, Cladonia cariosa, Cladonia pyxidata and Cladonia rei are the major components of specific cryptogamic assemblages proven to be bioindicators of soil pollution. This study examines the bioaccumulation capacity and heavy metal accumulation pattern of these species in the context of element concentration levels in various parts of their thalli at various vertical distances from the ground. The content of Zn, Pb, Cd, As and Cu in primary squamules, lower and upper parts of secondary thalli (podetia), and fruiting bodies (apothecia), as well as the corresponding substrate, was analysed using the AAS method. The substrate turned out to be the main source of heavy metals in the examined Cladonia lichens. Element accumulation in particular parts of thalli greatly depends on metal enrichment in the immediate vicinity while Cu/Zn ratios for both substrate and lichen samples were very low and comparable within the species. Concentration levels in thalli usually decrease significantly with distance from the substrate. The exception is copper, which content was frequently higher in apothecia than in the upper parts of podetia. Low bioaccumulation factors calculated for the examined Cladonia specimens classified these lichens as weak accumulators of heavy metals. Even given an extremely high level of contaminants in the substrate, the upper parts of thalli are not greatly affected. Consequently, fruticose and erect growth form, in combination with low accumulation capacity and a remarkable decrease in metal content along a vertical gradient, may be an important attribute of Cladonia lichens in the colonisation of a highly contaminated substrate. The content of elements differs significantly between particular parts of Cladonia thalli; this should be taken into account whenever burdens of heavy metals are used as indicators in biomonitoring studies.  相似文献

We studied the endolichenic fungal communities from saxicolous lichens occupying the cobbles at Nahal Boker, the central Negev Desert, Israel. Overall, 101 species belonging to 64 genera were isolated from 12 lichen species collected in three seasons from the south-facing slope (SFS) and north-facing slope (NFS) of the wadi. The endolichenic communities possessed a set of traits, which helped them to cope with harsh internal and external conditions. It included a prevalence of melanin-containing fungi with thick-walled and multicellular spores and a comparatively high contribution of thermotolerant species and species with meiospore-producing life cycle stage at the more microclimatically severe SFS. Species richness and isolate density of endolichenic communities was the highest in fruticose lichens with thick and wrinkled thalli, and the lowest in endolithic species possessing thin and smooth thalli. The communities from lichens formed a more diverse group than those from surrounding cobbles probably due to the influence of various species of lichens belonging to different growth forms.  相似文献

Screening test on anti-oxidation activity using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl(DPPH) was performed for 99 ethanol extracts of 85 species of natural thalli of lichens in order to find novel anti-oxidation compounds. The 17 extracts of natural thalli showed high anti-oxidation activity.Among them, the activities of extracts from Hypogymnia vittata,Peltigera aphthosa,Nephromopsis ornata,Pseudevernia furfuracea,Cladonia vulcani and Peltigera elizabethae were higher.Extracts of Peltigera spp.showed higher activity than those of other genera. The ethanol extract of P.aphthosa had been separated into ethyl acetate-soluble and water-soluble fractions. Two anti-oxidative spots were found only in the water-soluble fractions by thin-layer chromatography. The compound in the lower spot had the same Rf value,UV spectrum, and color as authentic solorinine that was previously found as a unique quaternary ammonium compound from Peltigera spp.We now report that the hydrophilic lichen substance, solorinine showed a nearly same anti-oxidation activity(EC50=120?mol/Lol/L) as standard antioxidant Trolox(EC50=150?mol/L).  相似文献

The density (fresh weight/volume) of the detached thalli of four sargassacean species (Myagropsis myagroides, Sargassum horneri, S. patens, S. siliquastrum) was measured weekly to determine their floating period. Thalli of the four species were collected with respect to the difference in their reproductive stage, and their floating abilities at different stages were determined. Floating thallus was ballasted with pre-weighed leads until the final addition of a weight caused sinking. The density and floating period of sargassacean thalli were dependent on the species and the specimens’ reproductive stage. The floating period of thalli detached before maturation was estimated to be between 4 and 14 weeks. However, thalli detached during maturation had a floating period of between 1 and 8 weeks, and those detached after maturation sank within 2 weeks. Sargassum horneri had the lowest density and the longest floating period among the four species investigated and this may explain the high abundance of S. horneri in floating seaweeds observed in the Sea of Japan.  相似文献

The identity of two phaeophycean taxa that monopolized the middle‐lower rocky intertidal zone of a coastal area chronically exposed to copper mine wastes in northern Chile was unraveled. One of them was preliminarily identified as the gametophytic stage of Scytosiphon lomentaria (Lyngbye) Link. The other, a dark crust, resembled the alternate stage of some Scytosiphon species. Comparative analysis of morphology, life history, and DNA sequences strongly suggests that crusts corresponded to sporophytic S. tenellus Kogame and confirm that erect thalli belonged to S. lomentaria. A clear segregation of erect and crustose thalli was found using internal transcribed spacer region 1 and RUBISCO spacer sequences. Furthermore, whereas crusts always grouped with S. tenellus, erect thalli always grouped with S. lomentaria. Life history studies failed to connect the two entities. First, field‐collected S. tenellus produced progeny that either recycled the crust, which reproduced by unilocular zoidangia, or developed into erect thalli. The latter, unlike typical gametophytic S. lomentaria, developed patchy sori of plurilocular zoidangia. Second, S. lomentaria displayed a direct‐type life cycle, in which progeny from erect individuals only developed into erect thalli and produced only plurilocular zoidangia. This constitutes the first experimental study on Scytosiphon from the Pacific coast of South America and the first report of S. tenellus on this coast. It is also the first report of the crustose stage of Scytosiphon appearing as a perennial and dominant algal species in a temperate rocky intertidal system.  相似文献

Spermatia from Aglaothamnion neglectum Feldmann-Mazoyer specifically bind with trichogynes and hairs of female thalli, One of the functions of hairs on female thalli appears to be the catching of spermatia. Fertilization can occur if a spermatium binds first with a hair and then binds with a trichogyne. The binding of spermatia with trichogynes is not species specific, but only occurs beween closely related species. Spermatia have fimbriate coneshaped appendages projecting from each end that are responsible for initial binding with trichogynes.  相似文献

Lichens and mosses cover 70–100% of the rock surface in a forested Appalachian boulderfield, and competition for space is intense. This paper examines overgrowth ability and its morphological correlates in four common species of foliose lichen on rocks. Overgrowth requires one lichen thallus to overtop another at the point where they meet. Therefore, I quantified margin height for a number of thalli of each of four lichen species. Two umbilicate species attached to the rock only at the thallus center showed a positive relationship between thallus size and margin height: large thalli often reached considerable heights above the rock surface, yet most also had points along their margin that were quite low and flat. Two other nonumbilicate species were characteristically flatter and showed no dependence of margin height on thallus diameter. Differences among species, among thalli of the same species, and among different points on a single thallus accounted for approximately equal amounts of variance in margin height. To determine the success of species in overtopping each other, I then recorded 639 instances of apparent overgrowth (overtopping of one thallus by another) on several rocks in the boulderfield. Of the nine pairs of species that met often enough to permit statistical analysis, only four pairs showed a consistent winner. Species in the remaining five pairs were competitively equivalent, neither winning significantly more than half the encounters although each individual encounter had a clear winner. Overgrowth rates measured from sequential photographs were highly variable, but many species pairs showed no substantial differences between growth rates over another thallus and growth rates over bare rock; only one species appeared to be affected by overgrowing other thalli. Overgrown thalli, as well as thalli experimentally shaded by gluing an overhanging rock chip above their margin for a year grew very slowly or not at all in the region of overgrowth, and the overgrown region of the thallus was often markedly discolored or disintegrating. Thus, foliose lichens compete strongly for space at the study site, yet because competitive success is at least partly based on a morphological character (margin height) that is inherently quite variable even in a single thallus, many pairs of species appear to be competitively equivalent.  相似文献

A new species of Porphyra, Porphyra lilliputiana, is described for the New Zealand region. This species is very small ([5] 10–20 [35] mm) and is found growing epiphytically, epilithically and epizoically on upper inter-tidal shores of moderate exposure. Field-collected material of P. lilliputiana possessed archeosporangia, endosporangia, spermatangia and zygotosporangia. In culture, archeospores vi/ere released and germinated to form thalli. Endosporangia either developed directly into thalli or released endospores which individually formed thalli. Zygotospores developed into the concho-celis phase, which formed conchosporangia. Released conchospores formed thalli. This species is distinguished by its small size, arrangement of reproductive cells, occurrence of endosporangia, dentate margin and habitat.  相似文献
