Wax esters, which are esters of fatty alcohols and fatty acids (FAs), are one of the main classes of reserve lipids in all coral species. The chemical structures and the content of wax ester molecular species were determined for the first time in nine coral species from three taxonomic groups: symbiotic reef-building corals, (Hexacorallia subclasses), symbiotic soft coral alcyonarians, and asymbiotic soft coral gorgonians (Octocorallia subclasses) collected in the South China Sea (Vietnam). Our comparison of these groups showed that the absence of symbiotic microalgae (zooxanthellae) and the exoskeleton affects the profile of molecular species of wax esters considerably. The main components of wax esters of all corals were cetyl palmitate (16:0-16:0) and other saturated wax esters containing 30, 34, and 36 carbon atoms. The content of unsaturated molecular species 6:0–16:1, 16:0–18:1, and 16:0–20:1 in wax esters of symbiotic soft corals (alcyonarians) was greater than that in wax esters of reef-building corals. In contrast to symbiotic coral species, wax esters of asymbiotic soft corals, namely azooxanthellate gorgonians, contained a considerable amount of long-chain molecular species (C37-C41) with an odd number of carbon atoms. The presence of such molecular species indicates that asymbiotic gorgonians may use bacterial FAs in biosynthesis of their own wax esters. This observation confirms our hypothesis that bacterial community is important for maintaining the energy balance of azooxanthellate corals.  相似文献

Wax esters were obtained from lipase-catalysed alcoholysis of triglycerides with cetyl alcohol, using n-hexane as solvent. The heavy triglyceride fraction (HTF), obtained by fractionation of sheep milk fat, was used as raw material. In the natural fat mixture GC analysis showed that palmitic, myristic, stearic and oleic acids are the most abundant fatty acids which are useful to produce wax esters. Reactions were tested for different amounts of Lipozyme RMIM catalyst, and the optimum concentration of 10 mg catalyst/ml solution has been determined. The formation of the four main products, i.e. cetyl myristate, cetyl palmitate, cetyl oleate and cetyl stearate, was determined by HPLC/ELSD quantitative analysis. The optimum water activity in the reaction medium aw=0.35 in the case of Lipozyme RMIM, and aw=0.53 for Novozym 435 was found. Lipozyme RMIM (immobilised sn-1,3-specific lipase from Rhizomucor miehei) was more active than Novozym 435 (immobilised nonspecific lipase-B from Candida antarctica) towards wax esters production. The acyl migration of 2-monoglycerides was suggested as a crucial step to explain the higher yields produced by the 1,3-specific lipase.  相似文献

The growth of Acinetobacter sp. strain HO1-N on hexadecanol results in the formation of intracytoplasmic membranes and intracellular rectangular inclusions containing one of the end products of hexadecanol metabolism, hexadecyl palmitate. The intracellular inclusions were purified and characterized as "wax ester inclusions" consisting of 85.6% hexadecyl palmitate, 4.8% hexadecanol, and 9.6% phospholipid, with a phospholipid-to-protein ratio of 0.42 mumol of lipid phosphate per mg of inclusion protein. The cellular lipids consisted of 69.8% hexadecyl palmitate, 22.8% phospholipid, 1.9% triglyceride, 4.7% mono- and diglyceride, 0.1% free fatty acid, and 0.8% hexadecanol, as compared with 98% hexadecyl palmitate and 1.9% triglyceride, which comprised the extracellular lipids. Cell-associated hexadecanol represented 0.05% of the exogenously supplied hexadecanol, with hexadecyl palmitate accounting for 14.7% of the total cellular dry weight. Acinetobacter sp. strain HO1-N possesses a mechanism for the intracellular packaging of hexadecyl palmitate in wax ester inclusions, which differ in structure and chemical composition from "hydrocarbon inclusions" isolated from hexadecane-grown cells.  相似文献

Lipid composition of the eggs of three reef building corals, Acropora millepora, A. tenuis and Montipora digitata, were determined. Sixty to 70% of the egg dry weight was lipid, which consisted of wax esters (69.5–81.8%), triacylglycerols (1.1–8.4%) and polar lipids c/mainly phospholipids (11.9–13.2%). Montipora digitata also contained some polar lipids typical of the thylakoid membrane in chloroplasts, probably due to the presence of symbiotic zooxanthellae in the eggs. The wax esters appeared to be the major contributor to positive buoyancy of the eggs, and specific gravity of wax esters in A. millepora was estimated to be 0.92. Among the fatty acids of the wax esters, 34.9–51.3% was hexadecanoic acid (16:0) while the major fatty acids in polar lipids were octadecenoic acid (18:1), hexadecanoic acid (16:0), eicosapentaenoic acid (20:5) and eicosatetraenoic acid (20:4). The wax ester appears to be the main component of the 4.5 6.0 m diameter lipid droplets which fill most of the central mass of the coral eggs.  相似文献

Nutrition of coral reef fish closely associated with the colonies of scleractinian corals Acropora spp. (South China Sea, Gulf of Nha Trang) was investigated. Parabionts Dascyllus reticulatus and Chromis caeruleus (Pomacentridae) feed mainly on zooplankton in the water column above the hosts’ colony, and inbionts Gobiodon quinquestrgatus (Gobiidae) rarely leave a host colony and feed generally on coral reef invertebrates. A high part of secondary nutrition objects (on average 19–29%) that indicates deficiency in main food were noted in both categories of fish. Food of all three fish species contains parasites (from 19% in C. caeruleus and up to 25% in G. quinquestrigatus) whose significant part is represented by parasites of coral (approximately 7% in D. reticulatus and C. caeruleus and 15% in G. quinquestrigatus). In addition, larvae of parasites of Isopoda and Facetotecta that are fed by fish in the water column were found. Mucus from the surface of host coral which was recognized on the basis of a high number of nematocysts in fish stomachs was found in food of G. quinquestrigatus for the first time. Positive and negative effects of symbiosis of fish and host-coral were discussed. A commensal character of symbiosis was supposed.  相似文献

Corals contain large quantities of lipids in their tissues; these lipids may be either structural or for storage. Little information is available about the lipid content of deep-sea corals, as well as ratios of main lipid classes. In this study, lipid percentages of 81 deep-sea specimens were measured and the presence of six major classes, including sterols (STEROLS), free fatty acids (FFA), triacylglycerols (TG), monoalkyldiacyl glycerol (MADAG), wax (WAX), and sterol esters (SE), was assessed. Deep-sea corals had fewer lipids than their shallow water counterparts. Decision-tree analysis revealed a link between coral groups and total lipid percentages, showing that species within the same group were characterized by similar lipid amounts. Depth did not seem to impact the total lipid percentages, suggesting that deep-sea corals adapt to the differential access to food by changing the proportion of lipid classes while maintaining equivalent lipid levels. In deep-sea species, similar to their shallow water counterparts, energy seems to be stored as neutral lipids (wax esters and triacylglycerols), with the notable difference that a high proportion of MADAG is present. These compounds are less rich in energy than TG. Depth trends were found for FFA, TG and SE with an increase in percentages after 800 m suggesting a potential need for storage due to decreased food availability. A subsequent decrease after 1,100 m was observed for FFA and TG but a more detailed investigation is warranted as the number of specimens acquired from these depths was less than 20. It is nonetheless a surprising result as increased storage is expected when food sources are sparse.  相似文献

The black-browed albatross, Thalassarche melanophris, travels along the southern coast of Brazil during migration. Their numbers appear to have decreased in recent years. From July 1997 to 1998, we carried out monthly surveys on the coast of Rio Grande do Sul, Southern Brazil, to count albatrosses in the area and identify ingested items. We found 85 dead specimens of T. melanophris, from which 35 stomachs were collected and the contents analyzed. Nearly 6% of the stomachs contained fish, 32% contained cephalopods and 9% contained crustaceans. About 69% of the stomachs contained nematodes and nematomorphs. The highest abundance values found per stomach was 182 nematode individuals and 223 nematomorph individuals. Synthetic materials were present in 29% of the stomachs analyzed, comprising thermoplastic, nylon, rubber and metal wire.  相似文献

Predation on coral spawn by planktivorous fish   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
The stomach contents of three species of coral reef fish were examined for changes in diet during the annual mass spawning of scleractinian corals on the Great Barrier Reef, Australia. Acanthochromis polyacanthus, Abudefduf bengalensis (Pomacentridae), and Caesio cuning (Caesionidae) were collected before and immediately after the coral spawning to determine whether the composition of the diet changed after the mass coral spawning. The diet of Caesio cuning did not change. The stomach contents of Acanthochromis and Abudefduf showed that these fish: (1) switched from an omnivorous diet to one consisting predominantly of coral spawn, and (2) that they appeared satiated with stomachs >90% full when coral spawn was present in the water column. Fish predation during coral spawning may be an important source of larval coral mortality.  相似文献

The frequency of individuals with empty stomachs (FES) can vary greatly among northern pike populations. However, the FES has only seldom been analyzed in this species and its meaning is still not fully understood. It has been suggested that a high FES may reflect a strongly piscivorous behaviour while low FES could reflect a higher utilization of invertebrates. We compared the stomach contents and the trophic position of northern pike in 16 populations of individuals feeding mainly on fish or benthic invertebrates. We tested the hypothesis that northern pike with empty stomachs or with fish in their stomachs have a higher trophic position than individuals feeding on invertebrates. Carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) stable isotope signatures were used to estimate the trophic position of individuals. We found no significant difference in the trophic position among piscivores, invertebrate feeders, and northern pike with empty stomachs. The average trophic position of northern pike was high (mean ± SD = 4.3 ± 0.4, n = 66) and was correlated with total length. These results indicate that, although invertebrates could be an important part of the diet of northern pike in Canadian Shield lakes, fish are still the dominant prey. Hence, feeding on invertebrates in our study lakes would reflect an opportunistic rather than a specialized feeding strategy.  相似文献

The food and feeding habits of Clarias gariepinus (Burchell, 1822) were studied in Lake Koka, Ethiopia, in May 2011 (dry month) and September 2011 (wet month). Three hundred and thirty eight nonempty stomach samples were analysed using frequency of occurrence and volumetric methods of analysis. Detritus, insects, macrophytes, zooplankton and fish were the dominant food categories by occurrence, and they occurred in 79.6%, 63.6%, 63.0%, 56.2% and 15.4% of the stomachs, respectively. Volumetrically, the above food items comprised 24.3%, 14.1%, 14.5%, 19.3% and 21.8% of the total volume of food categories. Phytoplankton and gastropods were of low importance, and they occurred in 28.7% and 8.6% of the stomachs, respectively. Their volumetric contributions were 3.2% and 2.8% of the total volume of food categories. During the dry month, fish, zooplankton, insects and detritus were important food categories, while during the wet month detritus, macrophytes, insects and gastropods were important. Smaller catfish diets were dominated by detritus, macrophytes and insects, whereas larger catfish shifted to fish and zooplankton. Based on the results, C. gariepinus was found to be omnivorous in its feeding habits in Lake Koka.  相似文献

Rates of mucus and DOC-lipid release were determined for colonies of Acropora variabilis and Stylophora pistillata at 5 m depth and for a colony of A. variabilis at 23 m depth. In addition, colonies at 5 m were shaded to simulate ambient irradiance at 6 m, 10 m and 16 m depth to evaluate the effect of light on the rates of release. A. variabilis released more mucus and DOC-lipid at 5 m than at 23 m depth. For both corals, the night rates were about 30% those of the day. A reduction in total integrated irradiance decreased mucus output from the corals. Similarly, DOC-lipid release showed a diurnal pattern and diminished with reduction in daily irradiance. For both coral species, DOC-lipid release rates were greater in the afternoon than in the morning. The night rates were less than 55% those of the day. The DOC-lipid comprised wax esters and a phospholipid fraction. The diurnal variation was due to changes in yield of wax esters which contributed >90% of the carbon released as DOC-lipid. In situ release of mucus and DOC-lipid was infuenced by light effects on phototrophic carbon metabolism. A daily budget for carbon released as mucus and DOC-lipid was estimated for each coral species at 5 m depth.  相似文献

Stomach contents from 15 minke whales Balaenoptera acutorostrata collected in the Lofoten and Vesterålen areas of Norway, August 1988, were analysed. All stomachs contained identifiable remains and constituted of fish only. Herring Clupea harengus was the dominant prey species found in all whale stomachs and constituted 92% of the total prey volume. Cod Gadus morhua was the second most abundant prey. In addition pollock Pollachius virens , haddock Melanogrammus aeglefinus , and great silver smelt Argentina silus were found in single whale stomachs. All fish species found in the whale stomachs in our investigations are of commercial importance, and the sizes of the herrings and cods in minke whale stomachs are of interest for commercial exploitation.  相似文献

The extent to which pelagic fishes occurring in the Sargasso Sea and adjacent parts of the Atlantic prey on leptocephali (Anguilliformes) was investigated. Most of the fishes examined (c. 95%) were collected using a commercial pelagical trawl. The stomach contents of about 1000 fishes (25 species of 10 families), mostly belonging to the suborders Myctophoidei, Stomiatoidei and the order Anguilliformes, were examined. The remains of invertebrates, mainly crustaceans, molluscs, tunicates, chaetognaths, and siphonophores were found in 28.8 % of the stomachs. Fishes, mostly myctophids or fish remains, were observed in 11.2 % of the stomachs; 18.7 % contained unidentified items and 40.6 % were empty. Leptocephali (Ariosoma spp. andGnathophis sp.) were found in the alimentary tract of 0.5 % of the fishes examined, exclusively represented by the myctophid,Ceratoscopelus warmingii. This report indicates that the Sargasso Sea population ofAnguilla leptocephali, economically the most important eel, is not seriously affected by predation of oceanic fish species considered in this study.  相似文献

Seasonal and size‐related patterns in feeding habits of the Atlantic bonito (Sarda sarda) in the Northeast Aegean were investigated over a 2‐year period May 2007 – May 2009 based on analysis of stomach contents of 134 fish ranging from 266–655 mm fork length. The fish were caught by purse‐seine boats operating around the islands of Lesvos and Chios (Greece). Of the stomachs examined, 46% contained at least one prey item and significant seasonal and size‐related patterns were found in the occurrence of non‐empty stomachs. The overall diet composition in terms of numerical importance was 71% fish, 28% crustaceans and 1% cephalopods. Of the fish, Engraulidae (Engraulis encrasicolus) were the dominant prey taxon, followed by Centracanthidae (Spicara spp.) and then Clupeidae (Sardina pilchardus). Statistically significant monthly variation in diet was apparent, suggesting that S. sarda take advantage of seasonally abundant prey fish in the study area, but no size‐related variation in the importance of the main prey species was detected.  相似文献

We examined the seasonal diet of juvenile (≤32 mm total length) common bullies, Gobiomorphus cotidianus, in Lake Waihola, South Island, New Zealand and whether they preyed selectively on the amphipod, Paracalliope fluviatilis, which was a dominant prey item. Generally, ≥75% of all fish sampled had consumed amphipods, which comprised 80%, or more, of the total prey volumes in fish stomachs over most of a year except on one sampling occasion. Copepods, snails, chironomids, Daphnia, mysids and isopods also contributed to the diet. Comparisons of the size distribution of amphipods in fish stomachs and the lake on the date of sampling showed that on four occasions, juvenile bullies selectively consumed small amphipods. No selective feeding was detected on the other occasions. The dominance of primarily benthic amphipods in the diet of juvenile bullies which, in turn, are preyed on by piscivores, suggests a strong benthic-pelagic link in the transfer of energy in Lake Waihola. Some scleractinian coral larvae have an extraordinary capacity to delay metamorphosis, and this is reflected in the large geographic range of many species. Coral eggs typically contain a high proportion of wax esters, which have been hypothesized to provide a source of energy for long-distance dispersal. To better understand the role of lipids in the dispersal of broadcast spawning coral larvae, ontogenetic changes in the lipid and fatty acid composition of Goniastrea retiformis were measured from the eggs until larvae were 30 days old. Egg biomass was 78.8 ± 0.5% lipids, 86.3 ± 0.2% of which were wax esters, 9.3 ± 0.0% polar lipids, 4.1 ± 0.2% sterols, and 0.3 ± 0.1% triacylglycerols. The biomass of wax esters declined significantly through time, while polar lipids, sterols and triacylglycerols remained relatively constant, suggesting that wax esters are the prime source of energy for development. The most prevalent fatty acid in the eggs was palmitic acid, a marker of the dinoflagellate Symbiodinium, highlighting the importance of symbiosis in coral reproductive ecology. The proportion of polyunsaturated fatty acids declined through time, suggesting that they are essential for larval development. Interestingly, triacylglycerols are only abundant in the propagules that contain Symbiodinium, suggesting important differences in the energetic of dispersal among species with vertical and horizontal transmission of symbionts.  相似文献

Cory’s Shearwater, Calonectris diomedea, is a pelagic seabird that winters in the waters off the state of Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil. Elsewhere, its diet is comprised mostly of fish and cephalopods, but dietary details out of the breeding season are unknown. The present study analysed the diet of Cory’s Shearwater along the coast of Rio Grande do Sul based on the stomach contents of 185 birds found dead during beach surveys between July 1997 and July 1998. Food items were classified taxonomically and non-food items were categorized. The taxa identified included the cephalopods Argonauta nodosa and Histioteuthis sp. and the fish Paralonchurus brasiliensis, Porichthys porosissimus, and Prionotus punctatus. Cephalopods were present in 97% of stomachs and fish in 33% of stomachs. Synthetic materials were found in 81% of stomachs. Our data corroborate the general ideas of Procellariiform diet during migration. The high amount of synthetic materials indicates the pollution of the marine environments of southern Brazil and we call attention to this situation.  相似文献

A total of 1145 stomachs from Atlantic salmon caught over the shelf off Helgeland/Trøndelag, and in the oceanic waters off Andenes, northern Norway during late winter–spring, 1969–1972 were examined. Food was found in 52.9% of the stomachs examined. The most important food items found in fish caught in the Helgeland/Trøndelag area were euphausids and hyperid amphipods while the myctophid Benthosema glaciale , the squid Gonatus fabricil and euphausids were found most frequently in the salmon caught off Andenes. Most salmon had preyed upon only one species, and few stomachs contained three or more prey species. The type of food did not appear to be related to the length of the fish. It is suggested that some mesopelagic feeding occurred.  相似文献

This paper presents a standardized protocol for the non‐lethal capture of fishes, sampling of stomach contents and quantification of seed dispersal efficiency by frugivorous fishes. Neotropical pacu Piaractus mesopotamicus individuals were collected with fruit‐baited hooks. The diets of 110 fish were sampled using a lavage method, which retrieved >90% of stomach contents of both juveniles and adults and allowed individuals to recover within 5 min of treatment. The proportional volume of six food categories was similar for stomachs and whole digestive tracts retrieved by dissection. Fruit pulp was proportionally lower in the stomach. The abundance and species richness of intact seeds increased with fish size independent of whether only stomachs or whole digestive tracts were analysed. The analysis of stomach contents accounted for 62·5% of the total species richness of seeds dispersed by P. mesopotamicus and 96% of common seeds (seed species retrieved from more than one fish). Germination trials revealed that seed viability was similar for seeds collected from the stomach via lavage and seeds that passed through the entire digestive tract. Therefore, stomach contents provide an unbiased representation of the dietary patterns and seed dispersal of frugivorous fishes.  相似文献
