Results of particle-in-sell simulations of ion acceleration by using the KARAT code in a cylindrical geometry in the problem formulation corresponding to an actual experiment with a low-energy vacuum discharge with a hollow cathode are presented. The fundamental role of the formed virtual cathode is analyzed. The space-time dynamics of potential wells related to the formation of the virtual cathode is discussed. Quasi-steady potential wells (with a depth of ∼80% of the applied voltage) cause acceleration of deuterium ions to energies about the electron beam energy (∼50 keV). In the well, a quasi-isotropic velocity distribution function of fast ions forms. The results obtained are compared with available data on inertial electrostatic confinement fusion (IECF). In particular, similar correlations between the structure of potential wells and the neutron yield, as well as the scaling of the fusion power density, which increases with decreasing virtual cathode radius and increasing potential well depth, are considered. The chosen electrode configuration and potential well parameters provide power densities of nuclear DD fusion in a nanosecond vacuum discharge noticeably higher than those achieved in other similar IECF systems.  相似文献

We have examined the rates of anterior interbody fusion of lumbar spine segments following fusion with a fresh frozen femoral head allograft in 25 heavy smoking patients. They were all stabilized both anteriorly and posteriorly. The indications for surgery were: degenerative disc disease, degenerative spondylolisthesis and nonunion following previous posterolateral fusion of lumbar spine segments. Only patients who had fusion of one or two lumbar segments were included. They all were stabilized posteriorly with pedicle screws and autogenic iliac bone graft. The fusion was assessed at least one year after surgery according to plan X-rays as “Solid”, “Questionable” or “Failure”. One patient was found at follow up not fused, in another one the fusion was “questionable” and all the other 23 patients had an anterior solid fusion. Clinically, 84% of the patients had the same or improved work status as before surgery and 68% acknowledged that they were satisfied with the surgical results. No major complications were recorded and the average length of hospitalization was 10.3 days. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The basic problem of nuclear pore assembly is the big perinuclear space that must be overcome for nuclear membrane fusion and pore creation. Our investigations of ternary complexes: DNA–PC liposomes–Mg2+, and modern conceptions of nuclear pore structure allowed us to introduce a new mechanism of nuclear pore assembly. DNA-induced fusion of liposomes (membrane vesicles) with a single-lipid bilayer or two closely located nuclear membranes is considered. After such fusion on the lipid bilayer surface, traces of a complex of ssDNA with lipids were revealed. At fusion of two identical small liposomes (membrane vesicles) <100 nm in diameter, a “big” liposome (vesicle) with ssDNA on the vesicle equator is formed. ssDNA occurrence on liposome surface gives a biphasic character to the fusion kinetics. The “big” membrane vesicle surrounded by ssDNA is the base of nuclear pore assembly. Its contact with the nuclear envelope leads to fast fusion of half of the vesicles with one nuclear membrane; then ensues a fusion delay when ssDNA reaches the membrane. The next step is to turn inside out the second vesicle half and its fusion to other nuclear membrane. A hole is formed between the two membranes, and nucleoporins begin pore complex assembly around the ssDNA. The surface tension of vesicles and nuclear membranes along with the kinetic energy of a liquid inside a vesicle play the main roles in this process. Special cases of nuclear pore formation are considered: pore formation on both nuclear envelope sides, the difference of pores formed in various cell-cycle phases and linear nuclear pore clusters.  相似文献

A new type of plasma electron-emitting source capable of increasing the temperature of plasma electrons behind the edge of a stationary plasma thruster (SPT) to 7–15 eV has been developed and investigated experimentally. For the same parameters of the main discharge, the thrust, the thrust efficiency, the mass use factor, and the lifetime of the “SPT anode unit-plasma electron-emitting source” assembly are found to increase substantially as compared to a thruster equipped with a conventional cathode compensator. Simultaneously, the neutral particle pressure required for the existence of self-consistent distributions of the electric field and charged particle density in the drift space of the neutralized ion beam decreases appreciably. It is shown that the volume of the region in which primary slow ions are produced increases with increasing ionization frequency. Three additional channels for discharge control are implemented. The ranges in which the discharge parameters can be controlled are extended.  相似文献

Exploring the relationships between landscape pattern and ecological processes is the key topic of landscape ecology, for which, a large number of indices as well as landscape pattern analysis model were developed. However, one problem faced by landscape ecologists is that it is hard to link the landscape indices with a specific ecological process. Linking landscape pattern and ecological processes has become a challenge for landscape ecologists. “Source” and “sink” are common concepts used in air pollution research, by which the movement direction and pattern of different pollutants in air can be clearly identified. In fact, for any ecological process, the research can be considered as a balance between the source and the sink in space. Thus, the concepts of “source” and “sink” could be implemented to the research of landscape pattern and ecological processes. In this paper, a theory of sourcesink landscape was proposed, which include: (1) In the research of landscape pattern and ecological process, all landscape types can be divided into two groups, “source” landscape and “sink” landscape. “Source” landscape contributes positively to the ecological process, while “sink” landscape is unhelpful to the ecological process. (2) Both landscapes are recognized with regard to the specific ecological process. “Source” landscape in a target ecological process may change into a “sink” landscape as in another ecological process. Therefore, the ecological process should be determined before “source” or “sink” landscape were defined. (3) The key point to distinguish “source” landscape from “sink” landscape is to quantify the effect of landscape on ecological process. The positive effect is made by “source” landscape, and the negative effect by “sink” landscape. (4) For the same ecological process, the contribution of “source” landscapes may vary, and it is the same to the “sink” landscapes. It is required to determine the weight of each landscape type on ecological processes. (5) The sourcesink principle can be applied to non-point source pollution control, biologic diversity protection, urban heat island effect mitigation, etc. However, the landscape evaluation models need to be calibrated respectively, because different ecological processes correspond with different source-sink landscapes and evaluation models for the different study areas. As was shown earlier for pulsed discharges that occur in electric fields rising with extremely high rates (1018 V/(cm s)) during the pulse rise time, the electron current in a vacuum discharge is lower than the current of runaway electrons in an atmospheric air discharge in a 1-cm-long gap. In this paper, this is explained by that the field emission current from cathode microprotrusions in a gas discharge is enhanced due to gas ionization. This hastens the initiation of explosive electron emission, which occurs within 10–11 s at a current density of up to 1010 A/cm2. Thereafter, a first-type cathode spot starts forming. The temperature of the cathode spot decreases due to heat conduction, and the explosive emission current ceases. Thus, the runaway electron current pulse is similar in nature to the ecton phenomenon in a vacuum discharge.  相似文献

Electron emission influence from gas-discharge plasma on plasma emitter energy parameters is considered. It is shown, that electron emission from plasma is accompanied by energy contribution redistribution in the gas-discharge from plasma emitter supplies sources—the gas-discharge power supply and the accelerating voltage power supply. Some modes of electron emission as a result can be realized: “a probe measurements mode,” “a transitive mode,” and “a full switching mode.”  相似文献

The calculation of the size of the “sensitive volume” or “control center” in biological effects of radiations is discussed from the viewpoint of the probabilistic theory of these phenomena based on the concept of random “effective events”. On the bases of that theory, the resistivity of a microorganism to radiation is defined as its “mean life” under a radiation of one roentgen per minute. This mean is calculated for processes with and without recovery. The case of variable sensitivity, as it occurs for instance during mitosis, is discussed in detail. Methods are given to calculate this variability from survival curves or similar experimental data. The theory is applied to experiments of A. Zuppinger on irradiation ofAscaris eggs with X-rays.  相似文献

Results are presented from experimental investigations of the dynamics of optical emission from a nanosecond diffuse discharge in a rod-plane electrode system. A study was made of discharges in a 10-cm-long interelectrode gap in atmospheric-pressure air (the cathode being a 1-cm-diameter rod with a bullet-shaped end). The voltage across the discharge gap was 220 kV and the voltage pulse duration was 180 ns, the voltage rise time being 10 ns. In experiments, the discharges were observed to evolve through two stages: the bridging stage and the conduction stage. The bridging stage begins with intense optical emission from the cathode region, the onset of the emission being delayed with respect to the beginning of the voltage pulse. Simultaneously with the onset of optical emission, a displacement current corresponding to the motion of charged particles begins to be generated in the cathode region. The duration of this current corresponds to the time the emission front takes to bridge the gap. As the emission front reaches the anode region, the current increases abruptly, indicating the beginning of the conduction stage. It was found that the time delay of optical emission relative to the beginning of the voltage pulse largely governs the discharge parameters: as the time delay becomes longer, the emission front velocity in the bridging stage increases from 0.6 to 1.5 cm/ns, the probability of realizing a multichannel structure of the discharge becomes higher, and the discharge current and the intensity of X-ray emission from the discharge grow.  相似文献

The “in vitro virus” is a molecular construct to perform evolutionary protein engineering. The “virion(=viral particle)”(mRNA-peptide fusion), is made by bonding a nascent protein with its coding mRNA via puromycin in a test tube for in vitro translation. In this work, the puromycin-linker was attached to mRNA using the Y-ligation, which was a method of two single-strands ligation at the end of a double-stranded stem to make a stem-loop structure. This reaction gave a yield of about 95%. We compared the Y-ligation with two other ligation reactions and showed that the Y-ligation gave the best productivity. An efficient amplification of the in vitro virus with this “viral genome” was demonstrated. Published: October 28, 2002  相似文献

This paper, consisting of two parts, gives all the mathematical details that were omitted in a previous work by G. A. Sacher and E. Trucco (“The Stochastic Theory of Mortality.”Ann. N. Y. Acad. Sci.,96, 985–1007, cited here as ST). We assume that the reader is familiar with ST, where the stochastic theory of mortality, originally proposed by Sacher, is discussed at length. We recall that the basic model presented there refers to an ensemble of particles performing Brownian motion in one dimension, with the added constraint of two absorbing barriers. These two points, collectively, are designated as the “lethal bound.” Part I (section 1 to 4) deals with the special case in which the two absorbing barriers are symmetrically located at a finite distance from the origin. The solution of the Fokker-Planck equation is obtained from the theory of eigenvalue problems. Quite generally, the eigenfunctions functions belong to the family of Kummer's confluent hypergeometric functions, but the symmetry condition imposed here results in considerable simplification and makes it possible to estimate the first few eigenvalues by a graphical procedure. In section 3 we show how perturbation theory can be applied in the limiting case of “weak homeostasis,” and section 4 deals with the opposite extreme of “strong homeostasis.” A rigorous proof is given for the result corresponding to equation (28) of ST (asymptotic or quasi-static approximation for the “force of mortality”). Sublittoral hard bottom biocoenoses in Balsfjord, Norway (69°31′ N, 19°1′ E), were monitored using underwater stereophotogrammetry. The study includes manipulation of natural densities of organisms and testing the importance of biological interactions and “key species ” for the structure of biocoenoses. Underwater photography has the advantages of being a non-destructive method, but it is selective because small or hidden organisms cannot always be observed. Field experiments with exclusion of organisms from cages seem suitable for testing hypotheses concerning which animals are “key species ” in certain biocoenoses. Sea-urchins(Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis, S. pallidus) were suspected to be “key species ” in the present study, and their removal from cages caused an increase in abundance of barnacles(Balanus balanoides), the limpetAcmaea testudinalis and algal cover.  相似文献

In the late 1960s, I identified an aspect of the kinetics of chlorophyll fluorescence in algal cells that I was unable to explain in terms of photochemical quenching. I proposed a novel regulatory mechanism for the distribution of light energy to photosystems I and II, which is now known by the term of “state transitions.” I also examined the “cation-dependent redistribution of light energy” to photosystems I and II and the “energy-dependent quenching” of chlorophyll fluorescence. At that time, financial constraints prevented me from measuring the emission and action spectra of chlorophyll fluorescence at liquid-nitrogen temperature and the light quality-dependent changes in the yield of chlorophyll fluorescence at room temperature. The financial problems were solved by constructing several pieces of electronic equipment using skills obtained by repairing radios when I was a high-school and college student.  相似文献

Over two consecutive years in the North Bank Plain Zone of Assam, India, during the spring growing season (February–June) of- 2006 and 2007 we examined effects of morpho-physiological characteristics of rice (Oryza sativa L.) plants in relation to methane (CH4) emission from paddy fields. Traditional cultivar “Agni” and modern improved cultivar “Ranjit” were grown in light textured loamy soil under irrigation. A higher seasonal integrated methane flux (E sif) was recorded from “Agni” compared to “Ranjit”. Both cultivars exhibited an emission peak during active vegetative growth and a second peak at panicle initiation. Leaf and tiller number, leaf area, length, and volume of root were greater in “Agni”, but grain yield and yield-related parameters such as increased photosynthate partitioning to panicles at the expense of roots were greater in “Ranjit”. “Ranjit” also photosynthesed faster than “Agni” during panicle development but slower than “Agni” at tillering. In both the years, a higher soil organic carbon content was recorded in plots of “Agni”. Our results suggest that in “Agni” enhanced diversion of photosynthate to roots resulted in more substrate being available to methanogenic bacteria in the rhizosphere. Additionally, the more extensive vegetative growth of this cultivar may enhance methane transport from the soil to the above-ground atmosphere.  相似文献

Modifications of different EEG rhythms induced by a single neurofeedback session (by the EEG characteristics) directed toward an increase in the ratio of the spectral powers (SPs) of the α vs θ oscillations were compared with the psychological characteristics of the tested subjects (the group included 30 persons). A generally accepted neurofeedback technique was used; the intensity of acoustic white noise served as the feedback signal. EEG potentials were recorded from the C3 and C4 leads. Psychological testing was carried out using Eysenck’s (EPQ), Rusalov’s (OST), and (16 PF) questionnaires. The directions of changes in the SPs of EEG frequency components were found to significantly correlate with some individuality-related peculiarities of the tested subjects. The SP of the δ rhythm correlated with the EPQ scale “neuroticism,” OST scale “social plasticity,” and 16 PF factors H (“parmia”), I (“premsia”), and Q3 (“self-control of behavior”). The SP of the θ component demonstrated correlations with the OST scales “ergisity,” “plasticity,” and “social temp” and with 16 PF factors M (“autia”), Q4 (“frustration”), and Q1 (“exvia”). The SP of the α rhythm correlated with 16 PF factors Q3 (“self-control of behavior”), G (“strength of superEgo”), O (“hypothymia”), L (“protension”), and N (“shrewdness”). The SP of the β rhythm correlated with the OST scale “emotionality,” while that of the γ rhythm showed correlations with the 16 PF indices L (“protension”) and M (“autia”). Changes in the ratio of the α vs θ SPs correlated with the EPQ scale “neuroticism.” Thus, our data confirm the statement that a high individual variability of the results of a single (first in the series) neurofeedback session is to a great extent related to peculiarities of the individual psychological pattern of the subject. Water nanoclusters are shown from first-principles calculations to possess unique terahertz-frequency vibrational modes in the 1–6 THz range, corresponding to O–O–O “bending,” “squashing,” and “twisting” “surface” distortions of the clusters. The cluster molecular-orbital LUMOs are huge Rydberg-like “S,” “P,” “D,” and “F” orbitals that accept an extra electron via optical excitation, ionization, or electron donation from interacting biomolecules. Dynamic Jahn–Teller coupling of these “hydrated-electron” orbitals to the THz vibrations promotes such water clusters as vibronically active “structured water” essential to biomolecular function such as protein folding. In biological microtubules, confined water-cluster THz vibrations may induce their “quantum coherence” communicated by Jahn–Teller phonons via coupling of the THz electromagnetic field to the water clusters’ large electric dipole moments.  相似文献

Fairmount 1 thorny” (“FM1 thorny”) (a Rosa multiflora Thunb ex. J. Murr.) and a thornless sport of “FM1 thorny” (“Fairmount 1” (“FM1”)) were established in vitro to investigate chimeral segregation under various levels of BA and to obtain a pure thornless rose. While the chimeral thornless sport was expected to segregate in vitro and yield both thorny and thornless plantlets, “FM1 thorny” was to yield only thorny plants. “FM1” segregated in vitro into its constituent genotypes and yielded thorny and thornless plantlets, suggesting that “FM1” is chimeral. “FM1 thorny” produced only thorny plants in vitro. These results indicate that the “FM1 thorny” clone was not chimeral (pure thorny) and that the thornless regenerates of “FM1” did not develop via somaclonal variation. There was a significant linear relationship between increasing BA concentration and the percentage of thorny plants. Among a population of 690 tissue culture derived plants from all the BA experiments, 6 plants were classified as pure thornless plants 1 year later.  相似文献

Results of two-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations of a surface glow discharge operating at pressures of 0.2–0.5 Torr in a nitrogen flow propagating with a velocity of 1000 m/s in the presence of external ionization are presented. The effect of the external ionization rate on discharge operation is analyzed. The current-voltage characteristics of the discharge are calculated for different intensities of external ionization in both the presence and absence of secondary electron emission from the cathode. The discharge structure and plasma parameters in the vicinity of the loaded electrode are considered. It is shown that, when the discharge operates at the expense of secondary emission from the cathode, the discharge current and cathode sheath configuration are insensitive to external ionization. It is also demonstrated that, even at a high rate of external ionization, the discharge operates due to secondary emission from the cathode.  相似文献

The effect of the elemental composition of the anode material on the parameters and X-ray spectrum of micropinch discharge plasma have been studied using a low-inductance vacuum spark device. It is shown that the plasma electron temperature T e and intensity of hard X-ray emission increase with increasing nuclear charge number Z of the anode material of the discharge system.  相似文献
