This study investigates changes in body proportions during ontogenesis of the bivalves Astarte arctica and A. borealis from the subtidal zone of northeastern Sakhalin. Marked differences in the shell form of bivalves were found. The shell of A. arctica is convex and compact, shell length and height are comparable, and shell width is more than 50% of shell height. A. borealis has a slightly elongate and flattened shell, its width is less than 50% of its height. Shell proportions can provide a reliable criterion for differentiating the species. Mollusks grow at nearly the same rate but attain different maximum sizes. Linear growth is described by Bertalanffy’s equation: Lt = 48.2[1 ? e ?0.4850(t ? 0.4396)] for A. arctica and Lt = 53.1[1 ? e?0.4106(t ? 0.4253)] for A. borealis. In northeastern Sakhalin, the life span of A. arctica is 7 years and of A. borealis, 8 years. By life span, the two bivalve species from Sakhalin slightly differ from their counterparts in other regions, particularly the arctic seas.  相似文献

Objective: To determine whether African urban children who were stunted at 2 years of age demonstrated an altered body composition by the end of childhood, before entering puberty, at 9 years of age. Research Methods and Procedures: This was a mixed‐longitudinal study of 330 prepubertal African children (182 boys) from Soweto‐Johannesburg, South Africa. Anthropometric data at 2 years of age were compared with anthropometric, DXA‐determined body composition and fat patterning in late childhood (7 to 9 years). Results: Children who had been stunted at 2 years were significantly shorter and lighter than non‐stunted children at 7 to 9 years, but there were no differences in their BMI or centralization of body fat. Previously stunted status significantly predicted reduced weight and height at 7 to 9 years but did not predict BMI, body composition, or fat patterning after controlling for potential confounding factors. The odds ratio for stunting at 2 years as a predictor of overweight at 7 to 9 years was not significant at 1.09 (95% confidence limits: 0.30, 3.98). Discussion: Greater BMI in stunted infants does not demonstrate a tendency toward overweight or obesity but is a reflection of the greater reduction in height rather than weight in stunted children. Stunted children may be programmed to accumulate greater body fat at central sites during adolescence, but we have been unable to show that these changes are evident before the initiation of pubertal development.  相似文献

We investigated the role of common β2‐adrenergic receptor (ADRB2) rs1042714 (Gln27Glu) and rs1042713 (Arg16Gly) polymorphisms on body weight and body composition response to 12‐week energy‐restricted diet in women. The study comprised 78 Spanish obese (BMI: 34.0 ± 2.8 kg/m2) women (age: 36.7 ± 7 years). We measured (before and after the dietary intervention) weight and height, and BMI calculated. Moreover, body fat mass and lean mass (LM) were measured by dual energy X‐ray absorptiometry. We observed an interaction effect between the Gln27Glu polymorphism and diet‐induced changes on body weight (P = 0.006), BMI (P = 0.004), and LM (P = 0.001). Women carrying the Glu allele had a greater reduction in body weight than non‐Glu allele carriers (9.5 ± 2.9 vs. 7.0 ± 3.5%, respectively, P = 0.002). Moreover, women with the Glu allele lost more LM than the Gln27Gln group (5.9 ± 2.7 vs. 4.0 ± 2.7%, respectively, P = 0.001). We did not find any significant interaction effect between the Arg16Gly polymorphism and diet‐induced changes on the outcome variables (all P > 0.1). The results suggest that the ADRB2 Gln27Glu polymorphism has a modulating effect on diet‐induced changes on body weight and body composition, and should be considered in future obesity treatments. These findings should be taken as preliminary and be replicated in further energy restriction studies with larger sample sizes.  相似文献

The shell length, height, and width, live body weight, and edible tissue weight of Manila clam of 1, 2, and 3 years of age were measured, and their correlation coefficients were calculated. The shell morphological traits were used as independent variables, and live body weight or edible tissue weigh used as a dependent variable for calculating the path coefficients, correlation index and determination coefficients. The results showed that the correlation coefficients between each shell morphological trait and the live body weight or edible tissue weight were all highly significant (P < 0. 01). The shell height at 1-year old clams was highly correlated with the live body weight and edible tissue weight. The shell width of 2- to 3-year-old clams was strongly associated with the live body weight, while the shell length was closely linked to the edible tissue weight. The results of coefficients of determination for the morphological traits against weight traits agreed well with the results of path analysis. The correlation indices for all morphological traits against weight traits were approximately the same as determination coefficients regardless of clam age. The correlation indices (R2) of morphological traits against the live body weight of clams of all ages and edible tissue weight of 1-year-old clams were larger than 0.85, but R2 of morphological traits against the edible tissue weight of 2- and 3-year-old clams was smaller than 0.85, indicating that some other factors might be associated with the edible tissue weight of 2- and 3-year-old clams. Multiple regression equations were obtained to estimate shell length X1 (cm), shell height X2 (cm), shell width X3 (cm) against live body weight Y (g), edible tissue weight Z (g): for 1-year-old clams: Y = ?4.317 + 0.18X1 + 0.147X2, (X1 < 0.01, X2 < 0.01), Z = ?1.011 + 0.095X2, (X2 < 0.01); for 2-year-old clams: Y = ?15.119 + 0.249X1 + 0.176X2 + 0.688X3, (X1 < 0.01, X3 < 0.01), Z = ?4.248 + 0.198X1, (X1 < 0.05, X3 < 0.01); and for 3-year-old clams: Y = ?25.013 + 0.415X1 + 1.184X3, (X1 < 0.01, X3 < 0.01), Z = ?7.082 + 0.119X1 + 0.332X3, (X1 < 0.05, X3 < 0.01).  相似文献

Objective: This study identified genetic and environmental influences on the tracking of body size from birth to 16 to 18.5 years of age. Research Methods and Procedures: Longitudinal information was collected from a nationally representative sample of Finnish twin adolescents (birth cohorts 1975 to 1979) and their parents through questionnaires mailed when the twins were ages 16 and 18.5 years old. The sample included 702 monozygotic, 724 same‐sex dizygotic, and 762 opposite‐sex dizygotic sets of twins. The measures used were length, weight, ponderal index (kilograms per cubic meters), and gestational age at birth, and height, weight, and body mass index (kilograms per square meters) at 16 to 18.5 years of age. The changes in genetic and environmental influences on body size from birth to early adulthood were analyzed by quantitative genetic modeling. Results: The twins who had a higher weight or ponderal index at birth were taller and heavier in early adulthood, whereas those who were longer at birth were taller, but not heavier, later in life. Adult height was affected more by the birth size than body mass index. In the genetic modeling analyses, the genetic factors accounting for the variation of body size became more apparent with age, and both genetic and environmental influences on stature had a sizable carry‐over effect from birth to late adolescence, whereas for relative weight, the influences were more age‐specific. Discussion: The genetic and environmental architecture of body size changes from birth to adulthood. Even in monozygotic twins who share their genetic background, the initially larger twin tended to remain larger, demonstrating the long‐lasting effects of fetal environment on final body size.  相似文献

Objective: To determine the changes in body composition (fat and lean mass) occurring in children during adiposity rebound (AR). Research Methods and Procedures: Thirty‐nine girls, 3 to 6 years of age at baseline, underwent yearly DXA scans for 2 years. An additional DXA scan was obtained 4 to 5 years after baseline. Age at AR was determined by modeling, and the velocity of change in height, weight, fat mass, and lean mass was estimated for each child using random coefficient models. Girls with an AR <5 years of age were classified as having an early AR, and those having an AR ≥5 years were classified as late AR. Results: Although body composition was similar at age 5, by age 9, girls with an early AR were significantly taller (3.5% more) and heavier (14.4%), with greater fat mass (50%) and percentage body fat (27%) than girls with a later AR. In addition, more girls were overweight according to BMI (18% vs. 6%) or percentage body fat (29% vs. 11%) at this time, despite no differences at baseline. Annual velocity of fat mass gain was over 2‐fold higher in early compared with late rebounders (17.1% vs. 6.5%, p < 0.0001), with no difference in lean mass velocity (13.1% vs. 12.5%, p = 0.116). Discussion: Differences in BMI during AR were caused specifically by alterations in body fat and not by alterations in lean mass or height. Children undergoing early AR gained fat at a faster rate than children who rebounded at a later age.  相似文献

Tumor necrosis factor‐α (TNF‐α) is a proinflammatory cytokine which is commonly elevated in obese subjects and whose promoter is susceptible to be regulated by cytosine methylation. The aim of this research was to analyze whether epigenetic regulation of human TNF‐α promoter by cytosine methylation could be involved in the predisposition to lose body weight after following a balanced hypocaloric diet. Twenty‐four patients (12 women/12 men) with excessive body weight‐for‐height (BMI: 30.5 ± 0.32 kg/m2; age: 34 ± 4 years old) followed an 8‐week energy‐restricted diet. Blood mononuclear cell DNA, isolated before the nutritional intervention, was treated with bisulfite and a region of TNF‐α gene promoter (from ?360 to +50 bp) was sequenced. Obese men with successful weight loss (≥5% of initial body weight) showed lower levels of total TNF‐α promoter methylation (r = 0.74; P = 0.021), especially in the positions ?170 bp (r = 0.75, P = 0.005) and ?120 bp (r = 0.70, P = 0.011). Baseline TNF‐α circulating levels were positively associated with total promoter methylation (r = 0.84, P = 0.005) and methylation at position ?245 bp (r = 0.75, P = 0.020). TNF‐α promoter methylation could be a good inflammation marker predicting the hypocaloric diet‐induced weight‐loss, and constitutes a first step toward personalized nutrition based on epigenetic criteria.  相似文献

Objective: To study whether walking limitation at old age is determined by obesity history. Research Methods and Procedures: In a retrospective longitudinal study based on a representative sample of the Finnish population of 55 years and older (2055 women and 1337 men), maximal walking speed, body mass, and body height were measured in a health examination. Walking limitation was defined as walking speed <1.2 m/s or difficulty in walking 0.5 km. Recalled height at 20 years of age and recalled weight at 20, 30, 40, and 50 years of age were recorded. Results: Subjects who had been obese at the age of 30, 40, or 50 years had almost a 4‐fold higher risk of walking limitation compared to non‐obese. Obesity duration increased the age‐ and gender‐adjusted risk of walking limitation among those who had been obese since the age of 50 (odds ratio, 4.33; 95% confidence interval, 2.59 to 7.23, n = 114), among the obese since the age of 40 [6.01 (2.55 to 14.14), n = 39], and among the obese since the age of 30 [8.97 (3.06 to 26.29), n = 14]. The risk remained elevated even among those who had previously been obese but lost weight during their midlife or late adulthood [3.15 (1.63 to 6.11), n = 71]. Discussion: Early onset of obesity and obesity duration increased the risk of walking limitation, and the effect was only partially mediated through current BMI and higher risk of obesity‐related diseases. Preventing excess weight gain throughout one's life course is an important goal in order to promote good health and functioning in older age.  相似文献

This paper deals with the size, age, and sex structure of population and growth of the Japanese littleneck clam Ruditapes philippinarum in Amursky Bay (Peter the Great Bay, Sea of Japan). One-year-olds and individuals with a shell length less than 19.8 mm were not found in the population under study. The population consisted mostly of 3-4-year-old clams (72.4%) with a shell length of 35–45 mm (67.8%). The maximum recorded age of R. philippinarum was 7 years, and maximum shell length was 52.7 mm. The male to female ratio was approximately 2: 1. Hermaphroditism (2.1%) and parasitic castration (1.4%) were observed. Linear growth rates of clams were found to increase until the age of three years old (11.6 ± 0.6 mm/year). Mollusks reach a commercial size of over 35 mm in shell length in the fourth year of life. The parameters of the von Bertalanffy equation describing group linear growth were L = 56.6 mm, k = 0.302 year?1, and t 0 = 0.468 year. The relationship between the shell length and the wet body weight is described by the equation W = 0.000253L2.954.

Objective: To assess the relation of self‐reported current and recalled preadolescent body size to measured BMI (kilograms per meter squared) and interviewer's assessment of body size. Research Methods and Procedures: This was a prospective cohort study of 1890 white and black women who were 9 to 10 years old at time of enrollment and were followed up 10 to 13 years later. At baseline, subjects had their weight and height measured and were asked to indicate their current body size from a series of nine pictograms. A sample of the subjects also had their body size evaluated by interviewers. At the young‐adult follow‐up visit, subjects were asked to recall their body size at 9 and 10 years old and to indicate their current weight, height, body size, and level of concern with weight. Results: Among the women with interviewer assessments, 84% of the white women and 67% of black women recalled a body size that was within one body size of the interviewer's assessment. Independent of weight status in childhood or at follow‐up, black women were 3 times more likely than white women to recall a body figure that was more than one figure leaner than the shape they reported at baseline (odds ratio = 3.5, 95% confidence interval 2.8 to 4.5) or than the interviewer's rating at baseline (odds ratio = 3.4, 95% confidence interval 2.4 to 4.9). Discussion: The results suggest that the use of body figures to recall childhood size are best suited for ranking subjects in terms of BMI. The higher rate of underestimation of size by black women suggests that body figure ratings work best for white women.  相似文献

doi: 10.1111/j.1741‐2358.2012.00666.x Chewing number is related to incremental increases in body weight from 20 years of age in Japanese middle‐aged adults Background: Eating habits are associated with both current obesity and incremental increases in body weight from young adulthood, but no study has focused on chewing number during meals among community residents. Objective: This study focused on the relationship between chewing number and incremental increases in body weight from 20 years of age. Methods: A total of 93 persons aged 35–61 years participated. The subjects were asked to set the device and record their chewing number during each meal on a particular day. They were also asked whether their body weight had increased by 10 kg or more since they were 20 years old. Results: The body weight of 28 subjects (30%) had increased more than 10 kg since the age of 20 years. Total chewing number showed a relationship with such body weight increases. The odds ratio of weight increments of more than 10 kg for the lowest tertile group was 4.6 [95% confidence interval (CI), 1.3–16.2] relative to the highest tertile group (Model 1). The odds ratio of weight increments for the lowest tertile group increased to 6.3 (95% CI, 1.6–25.4) in Model 2 and to 9.1 (95% CI, 1.7–49.8) in Model 3. Conclusion: Although this study was limited because it did not consider all risk factors, categorical chewing number was related independently to body weight increments of more than 10 kg from 20 years of age.  相似文献

Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of weight cycling (as defined by the frequency and magnitude of intentional weight loss) on bone mineral density and bone mineral content in obese sedentary women. Research Methods and Procedures: Bone mineral content and density measured by DXA, submaximal physical fitness assessment, nutrient intake, oral contraceptive use, and weight‐cycling history were assessed in 195 healthy, overweight sedentary women (age, 21 to 45 years; body mass index, 27 to 40 kg/m2) before beginning a behavioral weight‐loss intervention. Results: After controlling for body weight, multivitamin use, oral contraceptive/estrogen use, and calcium and magnesium intake, women who had a history of weight cycling did not have significantly lower total‐body bone mineral content or density or total femur bone mineral density. In addition, 99% of subjects were above or within one SD of age and gender normative data for total femur bone mineral density. Discussion: It does not seem that a history of weight cycling has an adverse affect on total femur and total‐body bone mineral density in overweight sedentary premenopausal women.  相似文献

Objective: Our objective was to examine gender differences in height and weight associated with socioeconomic status (SES) and the consequent effect on body mass index in a multiethnic society. Research Methods and Procedures: A cross‐sectional study, the First Israeli National Health and Nutrition Survey, was performed on a representative population sample of 3246 adults 25 to 64 years of age, between the years 1999 to 2001. Height and weight were measured, and BMI and other weight‐height indices were calculated. SES was assessed by income and education. Results: Age‐adjusted height was significantly lower at lower levels of SES among both women and men (p < 0.001). As opposed to men, women of lower SES were heavier than those of higher SES, and the mean age‐adjusted weight was 4.6 kg higher among those of lower SES (p < 0.001). Thus, using the standard index of BMI, the prevalence of obesity was significantly higher among shorter women. Discussion: In this group of Israeli adults, the unfavorable effect of low SES on BMI was evident among women, partly due to their decreased height combined with increased weight common in this socioeconomic sector. Since BMI is only partly independent of height, it may overestimate the prevalence of obesity among women of lower SES. Alternative measures for classifying obesity in the lower SES groups that put less emphasis on height may be considered and studied.  相似文献

Objective: To study the influence of scan velocities of DXA on the measured size of fat mass, lean body mass, bone mineral content and density, and total body weight. Research Methods and Procedures: The subjects were 71 healthy white adults, 38 women and 33 men. The mean age was 41.7 ± 13.5 years and body mass index was 28.6 ± 5.6 kg/m2. The subjects were scanned consecutively in slow, medium, and fast scan mode by a Lunar DPX-IQ DXA scanner. Results: Throughout the body mass index and sagittal height ranges, scanned lean body mass significantly decreased with higher scan velocity and lean body mass was 2.7% lower in fast than in medium mode (p < 0.0001). In contrast, fat mass, percentage of body fat, and bone mineral contents were higher with increasing scan velocity. Areas not analyzed by the scanner, so called blue spots, increased with scan velocity and sagittal height, and their presence significantly enhanced the error. Body weight estimated by DXA in slow mode was −0.8% lower than scale weight in the women (p < 0.001) and −0.2% in men (not significant), and the difference was greater with increasing scan velocity. Discussion: Scan velocity significantly influences the measured fat mass size, lean body mass, bone mineral content, and body weight. To obtain the most accurate results, slow mode is preferable and fast scans should be avoided. Future studies should report and take scan velocity into consideration.  相似文献

Although invaders come in all shapes and sizes, several mollusks have recently achieved notoriety as both economically and ecologically costly invaders. Applesnails of the genus Pomacea get their name from reaching the size of an apple. Native to South America, the species P. insularum has recently established reproducing, and potentially invasive, populations in Texas, Alabama, Georgia, and Florida. In contrast to the widely invasive golden applesnail (P. canaliculata), few studies of the channeled species P. insularum exist. In studying similar invasive applesnail species, scientists use several methods of measurement. We have explored the relationships among shell height, operculum width, and weight among juvenile and adult P. insularum and tested their inter-measurer reliability. We also investigated the use of shell height, shell length, and operculum width measurements in P. canaliculata studies and observed whether or not those studies defined their measurements. We found that operculum width served as a significantly more reliable measure among researchers. Furthermore, operculum width better predicted weight than shell height. The majority of articles that measured P. canaliculata did not define their measurements, which may cause problems when comparing studies between native and exotic populations or when comparing the two species. We recommend that future studies of P. insularum use operculum width to measure snails and explore a possible sex dimorphism in the operculum width of adult P. insularum.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to validate an 8‐electrode bioimpedance analysis (BIA8) device (BC‐418; Tanita, Tokyo, Japan) for use in populations of European, Maori, Pacific Island, and Asian adolescents. Healthy adolescents (215 M, 216 F; 129 Pacific Island, 120 Asian, 91 Maori, and 91 European; age range 12–19 years) were recruited by purposive sampling of high schools in Auckland, New Zealand. Weight, height, sitting height, leg length, waist circumference, and whole‐body impedance were measured. Fat mass (FM) and fat‐free mass (FFM) derived from the BIA8 manufacturer's equations were compared with measurements by dual‐energy X‐ray absorptiometry (DXA). DXA‐measured FFM was used as the reference to develop prediction equations based on impedance. A double cross‐validation technique was applied. BIA8 underestimated FM by 2.06 kg (P < 0.0001) and percent body fat (%BF) by 2.84% (P < 0.0001), on average. However, BIA8 tended to overestimate FM and %BF in lean and underestimate FM and %BF in fat individuals. Sex‐specific equations developed showed acceptable accuracy on cross‐validation. In the total sample, the best prediction equations were, for boys: FFM (kg) = 0.607 height (cm)2/impedance (Ω) + 1.542 age (y) + 0.220 height (cm) + 0.096 weight (kg) + 1.836 ethnicity (0 = European or Asian, 1 = Maori or Pacific) ? 47.547, R2 = 0.93, standard error of estimate (SEE) = 3.09 kg; and, for girls: FFM (kg) = 0.531 height (cm)2/impedance (Ω) + 0.182 height (cm) + 0.096 weight (kg) + 1.562 ethnicity (0 = non‐Pacific, 1 = Pacific) ? 15.782, R2 = 0.91, SEE = 2.19 kg. In conclusion, equations for fatness estimation using BIA8 developed for our sample perform better than reliance on the manufacturer's estimates. The relationship between BIA and body composition in adolescents is ethnicity dependent.  相似文献

Objective: This study evaluated associations of telomere length with various anthropometric indices of general and abdominal obesity, as well as weight change. Design and Methods: The study included 2,912 Chinese women aged 40‐70 years. Monochrome multiplex quantitative polymerase chain reaction was applied to measure relative telomere length. Results: Telomere length was inversely associated with body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, waist‐to‐height ratio, weight, and hip circumference (Ptrend = 0.005, 0.004, 0.004, 0.010, and 0.026, respectively), but not waist‐to‐hip ratio (Ptrend = 0.116) or height (Ptrend = 0.675). Weight change since age 50 was further evaluated among women over age 55. Women who maintained their weight within ±5% since age 50, particularly within a normal range (BMI = 18.5‐24.9 kg/m2), or reduced their weight from overweight (BMI = 25‐29.9 kg/m2) or obesity (BMI ≥30 kg/m2) to normal range, had a longer mean of current telomere length than women who gained weight since age 50 (Ptrend = 0.025), particularly those who stayed in obesity or gained weight from normal range or overweight to obesity (P = 0.023). Conclusion: Our findings show that telomere shortening is associated with obesity and that maintaining body weight within a normal range helps maintain telomere length.  相似文献

Previous QTL studies have identified 24 QTLs for body weight and growth from 3 to 10 weeks after birth in an intersubspecific backcross mouse population between C57BL/6J and wild Mus musculus castaneus that has 60% of the body size of C57BL/6J. The castaneus allele at the most potent QTL (Pbwg1) on proximal chromosome 2 retards growth. In this study we have developed a congenic strain with a 44.1-Mb interval containing the castaneus allele at Pbwg1 by recurrent backcrossing to C57BL/6J. The congenic mouse developed was characterized by significantly higher body weight gain between 1 and 3 weeks of age and lower weight of white fat pads at 10 weeks of age than C57BL/6J. However, no clear difference in body weight at 1–10 weeks of age was observed between congenic and C57BL/6J strains. QTL analysis with 269 F2 mice between the two strains did not identify any QTLs for body weight at 1, 3, 6, and 10 weeks of age, but it discovered eight closely linked QTLs affecting body weight gain from 1 to 3 weeks of age, lean body weight, weight of white fat pads, and body length within the Pbwg1 region. The castaneus alleles at all fat pad QTLs reduced the phenotypes, whereas at the remaining growth and body composition QTLs, they increased the trait values. These results illustrate that Pbwg1, which initially appeared to be a single locus, was resolved into several loci with opposite effects on the composition traits of overall body weight. This gives a reason for the loss of the Pbwg1 effect found in the original backcross population. Objective: To examine care giver perception of children's weight‐related health risk in African American families. Research Methods and Procedures: One‐hundred and eleven families (representing 48 boys and 63 girls) screened for participation in a diabetes prevention study participated. Care givers completed a health awareness questionnaire that assessed their perception of the child's weight, eating habits, appearance, exercise habits, and health risk. The care givers also reported each subject's family history of obesity, diabetes, and other chronic diseases. After a physical examination, height and weight were used to compute an age‐ and sex‐adjusted body mass index for each child. Results: Despite the fact that a substantial number of children were obese (57%) and super‐obese (12%), only 44% of the care givers perceived the child's weight to be a potential health problem. Regression analysis showed that 21% of the variance in parental perception of obesity‐related health risk could be predicted by child age, body mass index, perception of frame size, and perception of exercise habits. Discussion: A number of reasons for the apparent minimization of child health risk are discussed, including cultural differences in the acceptance of a large body habitus, lack of knowledge about the connection between childhood obesity and future health risk, and an optimistic bias in the perception of personal health risk.  相似文献
