Aotus monkeys were tested in a forced-choice discrimination task to determine their ability to discriminate sinusoidally flickering lights varying in temporal frequency and luminance contrast. Under conditions of moderate light adaptation this primate is maximally sensitive to lights flickering at 10 Hz while the highest frequency they can discriminate is about 42 Hz. At very low light levels (10(-5) ft L) maximum sensitivity is for 2.2--5 Hz flicker. The highest flicker rate that could be discriminated under these conditons was about 29 Hz. In comparison to humans tested in the same situation. Aotus monkeys show relatively lower sensitivity to temporal flicker under conditions of light adaptation but relatively higher sensitivity at very low light levels.  相似文献

Mobile technology is increasingly used to measure visual acuity. Standards for chart-based acuity tests specify photometric requirements for luminance, optotype contrast and luminance uniformity. Manufacturers provide some photometric data but little is known about tablet performance for visual acuity testing. This study photometrically characterised seven tablet computers (iPad, Apple inc.) and three ETDRS (Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study) visual acuity charts with room lights on and off, and compared findings with visual acuity measurement standards. Tablet screen luminance and contrast were measured using nine points across a black and white checkerboard test screen at five arbitrary brightness levels. ETDRS optotypes and adjacent white background luminance and contrast were measured. All seven tablets (room lights off) exceeded the most stringent requirement for mean luminance (≥ 120 cd/m2) providing the nominal brightness setting was above 50%. All exceeded contrast requirement (Weber ≥ 90%) regardless of brightness setting, and five were marginally below the required luminance uniformity threshold (Lmin/Lmax ≥ 80%). Re-assessing three tablets with room lights on made little difference to mean luminance or contrast, and improved luminance uniformity to exceed the threshold. The three EDTRS charts (room lights off) had adequate mean luminance (≥ 120 cd/m2) and Weber contrast (≥ 90%), but all three charts failed to meet the luminance uniformity standard (Lmin/Lmax ≥ 80%). Two charts were operating beyond manufacturer’s recommended lamp replacement schedule. With room lights on, chart mean luminance and Weber contrast increased, but two charts still had inadequate luminance uniformity. Tablet computers showed less inter-device variability, higher contrast, and better luminance uniformity than charts in both lights-on and lights-off environments, providing brightness setting was >50%. Overall, iPad tablets matched or marginally out-performed ETDRS charts in terms of photometric compliance with high contrast acuity standards.  相似文献

The howler monkeys (Alouatta sp.) are the only New World primates to exhibit routine trichromacy. Both males and females have three cone photopigments. However, in contrast to Old World monkeys, Alouatta has a locus control region upstream of each opsin gene on the X-chromosome and this might influence the retinal organization underlying its color vision. Post-mortem microspectrophotometry (MSP) was performed on the retinae of two male Alouatta to obtain rod and cone spectral sensitivities. The MSP data were consistent with only a single opsin being expressed in each cone and electrophysiological data were consistent with this primate expressing full trichromacy. To study the physiological organization of the retina underlying Alouatta trichromacy, we recorded from retinal ganglion cells of the same animals used for MSP measurements with a variety of achromatic and chromatic stimulus protocols. We found MC cells and PC cells in the Alouatta retina with similar properties to those previously found in the retina of other trichromatic primates. MC cells showed strong phasic responses to luminance changes and little response to chromatic pulses. PC cells showed strong tonic response to chromatic changes and small tonic response to luminance changes. Responses to other stimulus protocols (flicker photometry; changing the relative phase of red and green modulated lights; temporal modulation transfer functions) were also similar to those recorded in other trichromatic primates. MC cells also showed a pronounced frequency double response to chromatic modulation, and with luminance modulation response saturation accompanied by a phase advance between 10–20 Hz, characteristic of a contrast gain mechanism. This indicates a very similar retinal organization to Old-World monkeys. Cone-specific opsin expression in the presence of a locus control region for each opsin may call into question the hypothesis that this region exclusively controls opsin expression.  相似文献

Trichromatic primates have a 'red-green' chromatic channel in addition to luminance and 'blue-yellow' channels. It has been argued that the red-green channel evolved in primates as an adaptation for detecting reddish or yellowish objects, such as ripe fruits, against a background of foliage. However, foraging advantages to trichromatic primates remain unverified by behavioral observation of primates in their natural habitats. New World monkeys (platyrrhines) are an excellent model for this evaluation because of the highly polymorphic nature of their color vision due to allelic variation of the L-M opsin gene on the X chromosome. In this study we carried out field observations of a group of wild, frugivorous black-handed spider monkeys (Ateles geoffroyi frontatus, Gray 1842, Platyrrhini), consisting of both dichromats (n = 12) and trichromats (n = 9) in Santa Rosa National Park, Costa Rica. We determined the color vision types of individuals in this group by genotyping their L-M opsin and measured foraging efficiency of each individual for fruits located at a grasping distance. Contrary to the predicted advantage for trichromats, there was no significant difference between dichromats and trichromats in foraging efficiency and we found that the luminance contrast was the main determinant of the variation of foraging efficiency among red-green, blue-yellow and luminance contrasts. Our results suggest that luminance contrast can serve as an important cue in short-range foraging attempts despite other sensory cues that could be available. Additionally, the advantage of red-green color vision in primates may not be as salient as previously thought and needs to be evaluated in further field observations.  相似文献

本工作应用背景光压抑闪光视网膜电图(FERG),考察对图形视网膜电图(PERG)的空间调谐特性的影响,并与无背景光时的结果进行比较。背景光使全屏幕闪光诱发的FERG基本压抑。在这种条件下,同屏幕的图形刺激所诱发的PERG的振幅显示一定的低空间频率衰减(LSFA)。FFT分析表明,当时间频率为3.91Hz时,PERG的二次谐波呈现十分明显的LS-FA,与无背景光时的结果吻合得很好;当时间频率为7.81Hz时,也表现出LSFA,而无背景光时则缺如。这些结果表明,无背景光时记录的PERG振幅在低空间频率区偏高确实是由于混杂有亮度特异性成分—FERG。但是,PERG振幅所显示的LSFA仍不如二次谐波那么明显,这可能是因为FERG中存在的非线性成分未为背景光所完全压抑,仍然混杂在低频区的PERG反应中。  相似文献

Summary We have investigated the visual sensitivity of the California ground squirrel (Speromphilus beecheyi) to spatial and temporal luminance patterns. Spatial contrast sensitivity functions were determined in behavioral discrimination experiments in which the stimuli were sinusoidally-modulated luminance gratings. These squirrels were found to be maximally sensitive to spatial frequencies of about 0.7 cycles/ degree (c/d), and they are unable to discriminate gratings whose frequencies exceed 4 c/d. Similar results were obtained in electrophysiological experiments when the visually evoked cortical potential (VECP) was recorded from anesthetized squirrels. A third experiment involved tests of the ability of ground squirrels to discriminate square-wave gratings of much higher luminance (340 cd/m2). The finest gratings which were discriminable at this luminance level did not exceed 3.9–4.3 c/d and, thus, we conclude that the maximal spatial resolution of the California ground squirrel is about 4 c/d (corresponding to a bar separation of 7.5). In another behavioral experiment the abilities of ground squirrels to discriminate sinusoidally flickering lights (mean luminance = 3.4 cd/m2) was measured. The results show that ground squirrels are maximally sensitive to lights flickering at a rate of about 18 Hz, and that the highest rates that are still discriminable are slightly above 60 Hz.Abbreviations c/d cycles/degree - CFF critical flicker frequency - VECP visually evoked cortical potential This research was supported by Grant EY 00105 from the National Eye Institute. Ethological study of emotional state and behavior was carried out in male macaques of two species (Macaca mulatta and Macaca fascicularis), which were divided in three groups according to their initial keeping: isolated, family, and gregarious. During instrumental conditioning, the initial keeping was changed for identical conditions (individual caging or sitting in a primatological chair). It was shown that adaptation to stress associated with a sharp enviromental change depended on initial keeping conditions. Monkeys brought up in family with experience of both intra- and interspecies interactions (for example, monkey--human) had the highest adaptation and learning abilities. Individual and gregarious keeping of monkeys impoverished their individual experience, and their adaptation to experimental conditions required additional efforts. The learning of individually caged monkeys was successful, if their keeping conditions were not changed. Initially gregarious monkeys were successfully trained after their habituation to contact with humans.  相似文献

A diurnal pattern in oxytocin concentrations is present in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) removed from the spinal subarachnoid space of monkeys, with elevated levels occurring in the early light hours. In order to investigate the possible role of endogenous opioid peptides in the generation of this oxytocin rhythm, we administered naloxone (0.4 mg/kg/h x 48 h) to rhesus and cynomolgus monkeys and examined the effects on the diurnal pattern of oxytocin in CSF collected from the lumbar subarachnoid spinal space. Monkeys maintained on jacket/tether/swivel systems and in a 12 h light: 12 h dark cycle (lights on 07.00-19.00 h) were implanted with temporary spinal subarachnoid catheters. CSF was continuously collected from the lumbar subarachnoid space and assayed for oxytocin. Oxytocin concentrations in CSF showed a diurnal variation with peak and nadir concentrations during light and dark hours, respectively. The lumbar CSF concentrations of oxytocin were not significantly different during naloxone vs. saline infusion. Plasma oxytocin concentrations, measured in the same animals, displayed no diurnal variation and were not significantly different during naloxone vs. saline infusion. We conclude that naloxone administration for 48 h does not perturb the diurnal variation in oxytocin concentrations in the CSF of monkeys. Mu opioid receptors are unlikely to be involved in modulating the diurnal rhythm of oxytocin in the CSF of monkeys.  相似文献

An element-arrangement pattern is composed of two types of elements arranged differently in different regions of a pattern. Rapid texture segregation depends on spontaneously discriminating the difference in the arrangement of the elements. Five experiments investigated the perceived segregation of patterns composed of two types of squares arranged in vertical stripes in the top and bottom regions and in a checkerboard arrangement in the middle region. The squares were either equal in luminance and different in hue or equal in hue and different in luminance. The rated similarities of the two hues in a pattern failed to predict perceived segregation. For a given background luminance, the perceived segregation was predicted by the square-root of the sum of the squares of the differences in the outputs of the L - M + S and L + M - S opponent channels, where L, M, and S were the cone contrasts of the long-, medium-, and short-wavelength receptors. The perceived similarity of the two hues in a pattern was not affected by the background luminance but was a function of cone excitations instead. For patterns differing in hue and equal in luminance, perceived segregation was an inverse function of the background luminance. A white background decreased the perceived segregation, but a black background did not. The effect of background luminance was not on the discrimination of the individual hues. The two hues making up a texture pattern were clearly distinguishable on a white background. A white background interfered with the discrimination of the vertical and diagonal columns of squares that distinguished the texture regions. For patterns differing in luminance and equal in hue, black and white backgrounds decreased the perceived segregation. The results indicate that adapting to an achromatic luminance distant from the luminance of the squares increased the Weber threshold for discriminating luminance differences, but did not increase the Weber threshold for discriminating hue differences. The experiments also revealed that luminance was the primary factor affecting perceived segregation and that perceived brightness is secondary. The results are consistent with the hypothesis that perceived segregation in element-arrangement patterns is primarily a function of the differences in the outputs of relatively early filtering mechanisms that encode pattern differences prior to the specification of the element shapes and their properties.  相似文献

We recorded visual evoked potentials (VEPs) to checkerboard pattern-reversal stimulation in 109 normal subjects (51 males and 59 females; aged 19–84 years) in order to study the aging effect on the multiple channels of the visual system in humans. Transient VEPs to 3 check sizes (15′, 30′ and 50′) were obtained by monocular stimulation. Two test conditions were employed: (1) a high luminance (180 cd/m2) and a low luminance (11 cd/m2) both with a fixed contrast (90%), and (2) a high contrast (85%) and a low contrast (10%) both at a fixed luminance (57 cd/m2). The major features of our results included: (1) the presence of a curvilinear relationship between P100 latency and age for all conditions, while the P100 amplitude did not show any such aging effect, (2) the age-latency function was similar between the two luminance conditions, while it was different between the two contrast conditions, and (3) the differential age effect on the P100 latency caused by changes in contrast depended on the check size. These results suggest that age-related changes in the human visual system are not uniform, but rather are different in the specific functional subdivisions. It is thus hypothesized that aging may differentially influence the separate channels of the human visual system.  相似文献

The diets of the banded leaf monkey ( Presbytis melalophos ) at Kuala Lompat in the Krau Game Reserve of West Malaysia and the red leaf monkey ( Presbytis rubicunda ) in Sepilok Virgin Jungle Reserve, Sabah, East Malaysia have been examined in relation to plant chemistry. Both monkeys spent about half their time eating foliage, and about half their time eating fruits and seeds. They both favoured leaves with high digestibility (due to relatively low levels of fibre) and high levels of protein, a combination found predominantly in young leaves and some flowers. The monkeys appeared to favour seeds and fruits with high concentrations of storage carbohydrates or fats, but not those rich in simple sugars. Selection of seeds and fruits was not correlated with protein content.
An analysis of the fibre and protein contents of foods showed that, on an annual basis, the two monkeys achieved a comparable intake for both items. However, these diets were obtained in radically different ways. Presbytis melalophos was able to eat foliage from many of the common tree species in its home range, whereas P. rubicunda relied on rare trees and lianas. This difference is attributed to the very high density of Dipterocarpaceae at Sepilok, a tree family that provides little food for colobines. The rarity of P. rubicunda's food plants at Sepilok is considered to be the main reason for the greater home range size and lower population density in comparison to P. melalophos.
Finally, the biochemical profiles of the young leaf diet of these two monkeys were compared with previously published information on two African and one south Indian colobines. In many respects the intake of supposed critical components, protein and fibre, showed marked similarities between different animals, considering contrasts in their habitats.  相似文献

When squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) are fed diets containing cholesterol, some individuals (hyperresponders) become hypercholesterolemic, while others (hyporesponders) are able to maintain nearly normal plasma cholesterol concentrations. Skin fibroblasts were grown from three hyperresponder and threehyporesponder squirrel monkeys, previously characterized on the basis of their plasma cholesterol response to two cholesterol-containing diets and the pheno-type of their parents. The rates of cholesterol synthesis and esterification were determined in the cultured fibroblasts incubated with low density lipoproteins isolated from normocholesterolemic squirrel monkeys or hypercholesterolemic rhesus monkeys. Both lipoprotein preparations influenced the metabolic parameters measured in a similar manner in cells from both hypo- and hyperresponder animals. Exposure of skin fibroblasts to low density lipoproteins resultd in a stimulation of cholesterol esterification and a suppression of cholesterol synthesis in cells from both hypo- and hyperresponder animals. When incubated with increasing concentrations of low density lipoprotein cholesterol, up to 50 microgram/ml, fibroblasts from both hypo-and hyperresponding animals responded with a similar maximum percentage suppression of sterol synthesis. Thus, hyperresponsiveness to dietary cholesterol in squirrel monkeys, although a heritable characteristic, is not associated with an inability of low density lipoprotein to suppress cholesterol synthesis or stimulate cholesterol esterification as occurs in familial hypercholesterolemia in man.  相似文献

Individual trees of the food species of monkeys were identified by placing plastic tapes with an identification number on them in the tropical rain forest of Cameroon, West Africa. In order to determine the use of the feeding trees by monkeys, the ground under each of the trees was checked at least once a week to see if there were any fallen fruits or traces of feeding on fruits. Some fruit species were not fed on by either monkeys or large arboreal squirrels. Among the food species common to both the monkeys and large squirrels, a larger proportion in terms of quantity in each species was mainly eaten by the monkeys except in the case of super-abundantly fruit producing species. The monkeys and large arboreal squirrels were well segregated in their diets. Larger proportions (more than 85% for most of the monkeys' major foods) of fruits of larger sizes were made to fall on the ground by the monkeys and squirrels. The monkeys displayed a tendency to visit fruiting trees rather evenly (even rate of visit = even frequency of visit/duration of fruiting) not ignoring any area of the home range, although a small difference in this tendency was observed between the two study periods, one an abundant season and the other a poor fruiting season. On average, one associated polyspecific group of monkeys encountered only 14 fruiting trees per day. On the other hand, fruits were available all around the year, as the fruiting periods of different tree species were widely distributed around the year, or the fruiting periods of some species were very long. Although the monkeys are able to depend heavily on fruits, the quantity of fruits is not so great. The population size of monkeys is well balanced with the available food supply in the tropical rain forest of West Africa.  相似文献

Urine collected from New World monkeys (tufted capuchin, squirrel monkey, cotton-top tamarin) and Old World monkeys (rhesus macaque, Japanese macaque), was used as the odor stimuli. Two adult tufted capuchins were trained on a successive odor-discrimination task with two odors, 30 trials each, in one session per day. Responses to one of the two odors (S+) were reinforced by sweet water. The monkeys failed to discriminate between the urine from the two species of macaques but could discriminate among the urine from the three species of New World monkeys. Furthermore, similarity of urine odors was analyzed by multi-dimensional scaling (MDS) and a cluster analysis. These analysis suggested that the tufted capuchin can distinguish differences among New World monkeys but not between the macaques. The natural distribution of the tufted capuchin overlaps with that of other New World monkeys, but it does not overlap with those of Old World monkeys. Consequently, it can be concluded that this difference in olfactory recognition in the tufted capuchin reflects their sympatric and allopatric relationships with other species.  相似文献

用 7条舟山眼镜蛇 (Najaatra)研究动物对光暗周期加热光源反应所导致的体温变化。设计两项实验 ,每项实验历时 9d。实验一光照期覆盖整个白天 ,实验二光照期覆盖整个晚上。眼镜蛇仅在加热光源开启期间进行体温调节 ,但光照期内任何阶段都未发现所有个体同时处于热活动状态。两项实验中热活动个体百分比的时间变化显著 ,实验二热活动个体百分比波动相对大于实验一。在加热光源开启期间 ,实验一热活动眼镜蛇的百分比总体上大于实验二。在两项实验中 ,热活动眼镜蛇体温的时间变化都不显著。实验一热活动眼镜蛇的体温高于实验二 ,而两项实验中不处于热活动状态的眼镜蛇的平均体温无显著差异。实验一热活动眼镜蛇 (31 1±0 8°C)选择的体温上限高于实验二眼镜蛇 (2 6 0± 0 9°C)。在两项实验的任何时间段内 ,眼镜蛇的体温都不低于环境温度。  相似文献

In work electric activity of frog's retina was investigated by silent substitution technique. Electroretinogram was recorded as a response to abrupt exchange of the referent stimulus-line with fixed values of luminance and orientation to test lines with varied luminance and orientations. As a result of the analysis it has been allocated two types of responses of a retina. The response to onset-offset of a stimulus-line was similar to the response at homogeneous illumination of a retina (ERG), and was characterized by both the high amplitude of b-wave (hundreds mkV) and significant asymmetry of b- and d-waves. Whereas the same waves in response to substitution of the same stimuli were more symmetric and had on ten times smaller amplitudes. Such activity of frog's retina was referred as pattern electroretinogram (PERG) recorded in a high vertebrate's retina as response to stimuli whose contrast was temporally modulated. The analysis of interaction of luminance and line orientation channels in retina was carried out on the base of construction V-shaped functions of stimuli differentiation. It has shown, that activities of both channels are linearly summarized in PERG. It means independent and parallel functioning of these mechanisms. However, it takes the short subdivision of luminance, namely, when luminance of test line not far from luminance of referent line. At the same time, from the moment of the double prevalence of test line in relation to referent line, growth of PERG amplitude has nonlinearly form. Such two-stage changing of PERG amplitude speaks presence in a retina of a frog of two mechanisms of coding of luminance. One mechanism coding light intensity by power of the discharge, it forms the information on an absolute level of light in the environment. Its activity is caused basically, by receptors and cells of external plexiform layer and is submitted by b-wave of electroretinogram. Other mechanism submitted in PERG, is based on the vector code of stimulus, it forms the information on spatial and time differentiation of a light in the visual field and is connected, basically, with cells of internal plexiform layer of frog's retina.  相似文献

Neophobia, defined as showing caution toward novel features of the environment, is widespread in birds and mammals; it can be affected by ecology, early experience, and social context. In this study, we aimed to (i) investigate the response to novel food in adult common marmosets and Goeldi's monkeys and (ii) assess the role of social influences. We used an experimental paradigm employed previously with capuchin monkeys and children, in which a subject (observer) was presented with a novel food under three conditions: (i) Presence: group members did not have food; (ii) Different color: group members received familiar food whose color differed from that of the observer's novel food; (iii) Same color: group members received familiar food of the same color as the observer's novel food. Although most common marmosets tasted and/or ate the novel food, none of the Goeldi's monkeys ate it and only two sampled it. Differences in home range size and early social experience might explain the divergent behavior of the two species. Observers of both species similarly attended to group members and their visual attention increased with the number of group members eating, especially when the observer's and group members' foods were perceptually similar. However, we observed social influences on explorative behavior in Goeldi's monkeys but not on explorative or eating behavior in common marmosets. This result might be explained by the different pattern of response to novel food observed in the two species. Moreover, social influences on Goeldi's monkeys' behavior were nonspecific, i.e. they were not based on an appreciation that the food is safe because eaten by group members.  相似文献

To solve novel problems, it is advantageous to abstract relevant information from past experience to transfer on related problems. To study whether macaque monkeys were able to transfer an abstract rule across cognitive domains, we trained two monkeys on a nonmatch-to-goal (NMTG) task. In the object version of the task (O-NMTG), the monkeys were required to choose between two object-like stimuli, which differed either only in shape or in shape and color. For each choice, they were required to switch from their previously chosen object-goal to a different one. After they reached a performance level of over 90% correct on the O-NMTG task, the monkeys were tested for rule transfer on a spatial version of the task (S-NMTG). To receive a reward, the monkeys had to switch from their previously chosen location to a different one. In both the O-NMTG and S-NMTG tasks, there were four potential choices, presented in pairs from trial-to-trial. We found that both monkeys transferred successfully the NMTG rule within the first testing session, showing effective transfer of the learned rule between two cognitive domains.  相似文献

Caloric restriction (CR) is the most successful method of extending both median and maximal lifespans in rodents and other short-lived species. It is not yet clear whether this method of life extension will be successful in longer-lived species, possibly including humans; however, trials in rhesus monkeys are underway. We have examined the cellular proliferative potential of cells from CR and AL (ad libitum fed) monkey skin cells using two different bioassays: colony size analysis (CSA) of dermal fibroblasts isolated and cloned directly from the skin and beta-galactosidase staining at pH 6.0 (BG-6.0) of epidermal cells in frozen sections of skin. Decreases in both proliferative markers occurred with age, but no differences were observed between CR and AL animals. Skin biopsies were obtained from AL and CR rhesus monkeys from two different aging colonies, one at the National Institute on Aging (NIA) and one at the University of Maryland-Baltimore (UMB). These biopsies were used as a source of tissue sections and cells for two biomarkers of aging assays. The CR monkeys had been maintained for 9–12 years on approximately 70% of the caloric intake of control AL animals. In the CSA studies, the fraction of small clones increased significantly and the fraction of large clones decreased significantly with increasing age in AL monkeys. The frequency of epidermal BG-6.0 staining cells increased with age in older (>22 years) AL monkeys, but most predominately in those of the UMB colony, which were somewhat heavier than the NIH AL controls. Old monkeys on CR tended to have fewer BG-6.0-positive cells relative to old AL-derived epidermis, but this effect was not significant. These results indicate that cellular proliferative potential declined with age in Macaca mulatta, but was not significantly altered by CR under these conditions. Although these experiments are consistent with an absence of effect of CR on monkey skin cell proliferative potential, we have found in previous experiments with mice that a longer duration of CR (as a fraction of total lifespan) was needed to demonstrate CR-related improvement in clone size in mice. Further studies on the now mid-aged monkeys will be needed as their age exceeds 20 years to conclusively rule out an effect of CR on proliferative potential of skin cells from these primates. J. Primates show activity patterns ranging from nocturnality to diurnality, with a few species showing activity both during day and night. Among anthropoids (monkeys, apes and humans), nocturnality is only present in the Central and South American owl monkey genus Aotus. Unlike other tropical Aotus species, the Azara''s owl monkeys (A. azarai) of the subtropics have switched their activity pattern from strict nocturnality to one that also includes regular diurnal activity. Harsher climate, food availability, and the lack of predators or diurnal competitors, have all been proposed as factors favoring evolutionary switches in primate activity patterns. However, the observational nature of most field studies has limited an understanding of the mechanisms responsible for this switch in activity patterns. The goal of our study was to evaluate the hypothesis that masking, namely the stimulatory and/or inhibitory/disinhibitory effects of environmental factors on synchronized circadian locomotor activity, is a key determinant of the unusual activity pattern of Azara''s owl monkeys. We use continuous long-term (6–18 months) 5-min-binned activity records obtained with actimeter collars fitted to wild owl monkeys (n = 10 individuals) to show that this different pattern results from strong masking of activity by the inhibiting and enhancing effects of ambient luminance and temperature. Conclusive evidence for the direct masking effect of light is provided by data showing that locomotor activity was almost completely inhibited when moonlight was shadowed during three lunar eclipses. Temperature also negatively masked locomotor activity, and this masking was manifested even under optimal light conditions. Our results highlight the importance of the masking of circadian rhythmicity as a determinant of nocturnality in wild owl monkeys and suggest that the stimulatory effects of dim light in nocturnal primates may have been selected as an adaptive response to moonlight. Furthermore, our data indicate that changes in sensitivity to specific environmental stimuli may have been an essential key for evolutionary switches between diurnal and nocturnal habits in primates.  相似文献
