Relationships between environmental variables and benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages were investigated among several sites that varied in disturbance history in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, an Afromontane site in East Africa. Environmental variables were correlated with the level of past catchment disturbance – logging, agricultural encroachment, and present tourism activity. For example, sites in medium and high disturbance categories had higher values of specific conductance and lower water transparency than low disturbance category sites, these environmental variables may therefore act indicators of ecological quality of rivers. Environmental variables such as conductivity and water transparency were found to be good predictors of benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages, with anthropogenically stressed sites having lower diversity than the reference sites. Impacted sites were dominated by tolerant taxa such as chironomid and leeches, while ‘clean water’ taxa such as Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera dominated at minimally impacted sites. Comparison of sites with different disturbance histories provided evidence for differences in benthic macroinvertebrate communities that reflect the state of forest restoration and recovery. We recommend quarterly monitoring of water quality to act as an early warning system of deterioration and tracking ecological recovery of previously impacted sites.  相似文献

Habitat specialists are considered to be more sensitive to anthropogenic disturbance than habitat generalists. However, a number of studies have shown that habitat specialists can be tolerant to or even benefit from environmental degradation, suggesting that the effect of disturbance on distributions and abundances of habitat generalists and specialists can be unpredictable. In this study, we assessed the effects of anthropogenic disturbance on the degree of specialization of stream macroinvertebrates in boreal streams. We first measured the niche width for each macroinvertebrate species using the Outlying Mean Index (OMI) analysis and then, using independent data sets of near-pristine and anthropogenically altered streams, we examined the effects of human disturbances on stream macroinvertebrates with different tolerances to environmental conditions. As expected, human disturbance significantly decreased the level of the specialization in stream macroinvertebrate assemblages, and taxa with narrow environmental tolerances were more sensitive to disturbance than taxa with wide tolerances. Despite being more sensitive to disturbance, taxa with narrow environmental tolerances were locally more abundant than tolerant taxa in near-pristine streams, indicating their better performance in their optimal environments. However, many tolerant taxa decreased in their occurrence in disturbed streams, suggesting that habitat generalists also tend to negatively respond to disturbance. Species-rich assemblages harboured more taxa with narrow tolerances compared with species poor assemblages, suggesting a high conservation value of streams with diverse macroinvertebrate assemblages. Consistent with findings for many biological groups, our results indicate that macroinvertebrate species specialised in certain habitats are more sensitive to environmental degradation than habitat generalists. However, contrary to many previous studies, our results suggest that only a few species are likely to benefit from anthropogenic disturbance and, therefore, environmental degradation does not necessary result in macroinvertebrate assemblages composed of a few tolerant taxa.  相似文献

Abstract Two sets of data were used to evaluate the procedure for rapid assessment of rivers described by Chessman (1995): (i) 72 samples from four habitats at 27 sites on the Nepean River and tributaries; and (ii) 41 riffle samples from the Blue Mountains. In the Nepean system all the sites had moderate anthropogenic disturbance but none had gross organic pollution. There were, however, conductivity differences related to mixed sandstone and shale lithology. The sites differed widely in natural physical attributes such as stream order (2–6) and altitude (40–600 m). The Blue Mountains data included sites with little or no anthropogenic disturbance and sites greatly affected by organic pollution. There was again a wide range of altitudes (15–1000 m) but stream orders were more restricted (1–4). The occurrence of macroinvertebrate families was analysed using cluster analysis (TWINSPAN) and ordination (semi-strong hybrid multidimensional scaling). Relationships between the patterns observed, the SIGNAL biotic index, and physical and chemical data were investigated. The Nepean data showed that the sample size of 100 animals used in the rapid procedure was sufficient to reveal natural distribution patterns in the communities, and that SIGNAL was essentially independent of these patterns. In the Blue Mountains, water pollution had a greater effect on macroinvertebrate communities than the physical habitat, and SIGNAL distinguished sites with differing levels of pollution.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of environmental factors on the distribution of macroinvertebrate taxa in different sized lowland Lithuanian rivers. A secondary aim was to assess ecological river quality and to determine the most suitable biotic index. A final aim was to determine the most appropriate macroinvertebrate families for river quality assessment in Lithuania. Species composition and quantitative characteristics of benthic macroinvertebrate communities have been investigated using standard kick-sampling method by a standard hand net in 24 different river sites in spring. Physical and chemical environmental parameters were measured in the same study site as the macroinvertebrate sampling. A total of 186 taxa representing 66 families or higher taxonomic ranks of benthic macroinvertebrates have been identified. Water temperature and current velocity influenced the highest number of ivestigated families. Seven of the most tolerant and eleven of the most sensitive macroinvertebrate taxa for hydrochemical parameters related with organic pollution were determined. The DSFI method was founded to be the best index for assessment of ecological status for Lithuanian rivers until more accurate estimation method will be created.  相似文献

2013年5月对深圳大鹏半岛4条主要河流(葵涌河、王母河、鹏城河和东涌河)的大型底栖动物群落结构进行了调查,并利用香农-维纳多样性指数和生物指数(BI)对河流水质进行了生物学评价。在大鹏半岛主要河流的15个样点共采获大型底栖动物35种,隶属3门7纲21科,其中水生昆虫26种,约占底栖动物种类数的74%。但底栖动物的种类组成与分布极不均匀,EPT(蜉蝣目+襀翅目+毛翅目)等对水质变化较敏感的类群主要分布于葵涌河的源头及受人为干扰活动较少的东涌河,而耐污能力较强的摇蚊科幼虫、霍甫水丝蚓和颤蚓等则为葵涌河中、下游样点、王母河和鹏城河的优势物种。生物指数(BI)相较于香农-维纳多样性指数,更适用于水质评价。结果显示,除葵涌河源头、鹏城河和东涌河样点的水质处于清洁至轻污染外,其余大部分样点处于中污染至重污染状态。推测大鹏半岛的王母河及葵涌河中、下游河段的生活污水及工业废水已对底栖动物的群落结构与河流水质造成了一定的影响。  相似文献

The implementation of directives such as the European Water Framework Directive (WFD) and the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) has promoted the development of several tools and methods for assessing the ecological health of marine ecosystems. Within the scope of the WFD and in terms of rocky shores, several multimetric tools were developed based on the macroalgae biological quality element (BQE), in addition to those based on macroinvertebrates.The WFD requires member states to assess each BQE separately. The present work aimed to test the ability of ecological indices to distinguish sites within anthropogenic disturbance gradients caused by organic enrichment, using macroinvertebrate communities on intertidal rocky shores. Owing to the lack of more specific indices (for rocky shore), indices based on abundance, diversity and/or taxonomic composition were selected from several widely used indices in ecological studies and/or developed for soft-bottom macroinvertebrate communities.Present findings reveal several indices based on diversity and/or taxonomic composition able to distinguish sites within the disturbance gradients, showing increasing quality from the site nearest the source of organic enrichment to that farthest from it, especially indices calculated using biomass data, and in the summer season. Such results open good perspectives for the use of intertidal macroinvertebrate communities from rocky shores, and also help add the perspective of this biological quality element in the ecological quality assessment of coastal waters.  相似文献

The rate of freshwater invasions may be increasing, and macroinvertebrate invaders can have significant impacts on native macroinvertebrate assemblage structure through biotic interactions. More pollution-tolerant invaders can often replace native species. We examined implications of a species replacement for accurate biological monitoring of river systems using biotic indices. Our study uses Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man as examples of countries that possess river networks with many riverine macroinvertebrate assemblages subject to invasion. The introduced amphipod crustacean Gammarus pulex has replaced the native species G. duebeni celticus in many rivers in N. Ireland and the Isle of Man. Extensive seasonal data sets (119 sites) from three river networks, Lough Neagh and the Lagan in N. Ireland, and island-wide in the Isle of Man, were used to investigate the assumed equivalence of the native and invader in biotic indices concerned with the water quality monitoring system. Based on the derivation of the Biological Monitoring Working Party (BMWP) score, the Average Score Per Taxon (ASPT), as an example of a commonly used biotic index of water quality, we found index scores were lower in G. pulex sites compared to G. d. celticus-only sites. This indicated that assemblages were dominated by taxa more tolerant of organic pollution in the invader sites and more sensitive in the native sites. Inclusion of the invader in generation of the ASPT index, overinflated the ASPT values obtained compared to those with the native’s inclusion. This questions the accuracy of the ASPT and similar indices in rivers where the invader had replaced the native. We argue that with invasion pressures increasing, the validity of water quality indices such as the BMWP/ASPT needs to be re-examined in catchments where invaders have replaced natives. Indices such as the BMWP/ASPT are based on family level taxa and are inevitably coarse in their resolution given the wide range of water qualities tolerated by different genera within families. We argue that this resolution is even more compromised by the presence of very pollution-tolerant invaders, who may have replaced natives in disturbed or degraded river systems. The whole structure of water quality indices such as the BMWP/ASPT may need revising to take into account the presence of invasive species within monitored assemblages.  相似文献

The typical urban river is affected by various factors relating to water quality problems, physical habitat modification (for flood prevention) and flashy flows. These restrict macroinvertebrate biodiversity such that a few tolerant taxa may dominate and more sensitive organisms may be completely absent. This paper presents the findings of a year long, macroinvertebrate survey of an urban river catchment and investigates the effects of physical habitat modification on macroinvertebrates using various analytical tools. It is demonstrated that considerable variation in invertebrate species, abundance, diversity and tolerance exists between different urban rivers, sites on the same river and individual sites at different sampling times. Analysis of paired sites with similar water quality, but contrasting physical habitat, indicates that less modified sites support a slightly higher quality macroinvertebrate fauna (defined by biotic score and beta diversity) than heavily engineered sites. It is concluded that water quality is the primary limiting factor of invertebrate biodiversity in the heavily urbanized River Tame catchment. The removal of heavy engineering structures may facilitate improvements to invertebrate fauna in urban rivers only in conjunction with improvements to water quality.  相似文献

1. Sites immediately below seven dams in Victoria and 12 in southern New South Wales (NSW) were sampled for macroinvertebrates using rapid bioassessment techniques. Specimens were identified to the lowest taxonomic level. The dams had different operating and discharge regimes and thus potentially different downstream effects on this fauna.
2. The AUStralian RIVer Assessment Scheme (AUSRIVAS) predictive models for macroinvertebrate composition were applied to the families and genera observed at Victorian sites and to the families only at the NSW sites. Lists of predicted taxa, their probabilities of occurrence and ratios of observed to expected taxa (O/E scores) were obtained from these models.
3. The mean O/E score for Victoria was 0.46 at the genus level and 0.63 at the family level; for NSW the mean score at the family level was 0.62. There was no significant difference between family level scores for the two states. Thus about 40% of expected families were missing at all sites. Family level scores were highly correlated ( r =0.84–0.86, P  < 0.001) with numbers of families or species at a site.
4. There was no correlation between family O/E scores (or family and species richness) and the degree to which current discharge levels below a dam differ from the natural patterns. Thus increased hydrological deviation did not result in greater biological degradation. In addition, there was no association between these biological characteristics and whether dams released surface or bottom water.
5. All the dams seemed to cause much the same disruption to the fauna. Of the families predicted to have widespread occurrence, 9–12 were found at most sites (tolerant taxa), while a larger number (14–24) were missing (intolerant taxa). The limited recolonisation below dams may well be because of the fact that dams act as barriers to drift, the most prominent route for invertebrate colonists.  相似文献

Ecological Effects of Serial Impoundment on the Cotter River, Australia   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
This study examines the ecological effects of serial impoundments (three dams) on a rocky upland stream in southeastern Australia. Physical, chemical and biological changes were quantified and interpreted within a three-level hierarchy of effects model developed previously by Petts [1984, Impounded Rivers. John Wiley and Sons, New York] and the Australian Rivers Assessment System (AUSRIVAS) to predict pre-dam biota. First-order effects were decreased median monthly discharges and floods of lesser magnitude following construction of the dams. No effect on water characteristics (pH, electrical conductivity and major ions) was evident. The second-order effect on channel morphology was a decrease in bank-full cross-sectional area by up to 75% because of reduced flows. At all sites, the predominantly cobble streambed was armoured and generally highly stable. The discharge required to initiate movement of the streambed surface sediments (38.9 m3 s−1) was 40% less frequent since construction of the dams, implying alteration to the natural disturbance regime for benthic biota. Benthic algal growth appeared more prolific at sites directly below dams. Fewer macroinvertebrate taxa than expected and modified assemblages within 1 km of all three dams were third-order effects. Compared to reference conditions, macroinvertebrate samples from the sites directly below the dams had relatively more Chironomidae larvae, Oligochaeta and Acarina, and fewer of the more sensitive taxa, Plecoptera, Ephemeroptera, Trichoptera and Coleoptera. Biological recovery to the macroinvertebrate assemblage was evident within 4 km downstream of the second dam.  相似文献

The study assessed the impact of damming on water quality and macroinvertebrate assemblages. It also assessed the response of macroinvertebrate‐based indices of water quality to damming. Macroinvertebrate community and physicochemical variables data were collected from 86 sites. Twenty‐nine sites downstream of dams were compared with 27 sites above impoundments and 30 sites on nearby unregulated streams. Of the downstream sites, 13 were situated <1 km from a dam while the other 16 were situated >1 km from a dam. A decrease in temperature, dissolved oxygen, conductivity and total dissolved solids was observed in sites immediately downstream of impoundments. Macroinvertebrate community structure and South African Scoring System (SASS) scores closely followed the damming‐induced changes in water quality. However, water quality variables, macroinvertebrate community structure and SASS scores reverted back to typical upstream conditions in distances around 1 km from dams. Stream recovery from dam‐induced changes was demonstrated with streams recovering at distances around 1 km from the point of regulation in corroboration with predictions of the serial discontinuity concept (SDC). These dam‐induced changes also reflected themselves in SASS scores suggesting potential usefulness of SASS in monitoring ecological integrity of tropical rivers following disturbances like damming.  相似文献

Human development of pond and lake shorelines may significantly impact native lacustrine biota including a variety of aquatic macroinvertebrate groups. In an effort to better understand the habitat associations and sensitivities of lacustrine damselflies (Odonata: Zygoptera), we sampled adults in littoral macrophyte habitat during two flight periods at 35 randomly selected pond and lake sites in southern Maine during 2000 and 2001. Data were also collected to help characterize water body, shoreline disturbance, and aquatic vegetation at each study site. Nonmetric multidimensional scaling was used for ordination of damselfly assemblages, and coordinates from the most stable solution were related to site variables using forward stepwise multiple regression. Our results suggest that the diversity and composition of damselfly assemblages is related to the abundance and richness of littoral zone macrophytes, extent of riparian disturbance, benthic substrate granularity, and lake productivity; all variables subject to anthropogenic degradation on excessively developed waterbodies. Additionally, we developed a Habitat Tolerance Index useful for distinguishing between relative habitat specialists and generalists from among a diverse assemblage of 19 lacustrine species. Finally, species-specific damselfly associations with multiple genera of floating and emergent macrophytes were assessed using both nonparametric correlation and multiplicative regression yielding significant relationships for 17 species, including two damselflies of global conservation concern (Enallagma laterale and E. pictum). We conclude that the protection of littoral and shoreline habitat integrity, with special emphasis on emergent and floating macrophytes, is critical to the conservation of lacustrine biodiversity.  相似文献

Macroinvertebrates have a successful history of use as indicators of human impact in lotic environments. More recently, macroinvertebrate indices have been recommended for use in certain wetland types. Yet some authors do not recommend macroinvertebrates indices of wetland condition in areas with pronounced natural environmental heterogeneity. Our study provides a preliminary assessment of the feasibility of using macroinvertebrates for bioassessment of temporary isolated depression wetlands in the south-western Cape region of South Africa. We expected natural environmental heterogeneity among wetlands to exert a stronger influence on macroinvertebrates than human disturbance factors. Partitioning of the variation in macroinvertebrate assemblage composition that could be attributed to human disturbance factors (within and adjacent to wetlands), environmental variables and spatio-temporal factors indicated that environmental and spatio-temporal factors independent of human disturbances largely determined assemblage composition, whilst human disturbance played a relatively minor role. Linear regressions of taxon richness/diversity measures, individual families and a collation of metrics against measures of habitat transformation around wetlands and scores from a rapid assessment index of human disturbance revealed poor relationships. The univariate and multivariate patterns observed in this study do not lend themselves to the creation of a macroinvertebrate index of human disturbance for temporary wetlands in the region.  相似文献

Freshwater ecosystems are increasingly threatened by multiple anthropogenic stressors. Release of treated sewage effluent and pollution from agricultural or urban sources can independently reduce water quality with implications for ecological communities. However, our knowledge of the combined effects of these stressors is limited. We performed a field study to quantify the combined effect of treated sewage discharge and land use on nutrient concentrations, sewage fungus presence and communities of macroinvertebrates and benthic algae. Over three seasons in four rivers we found that a model which included an interaction between sewage pollution and time of the year (i.e. months) was the best predictor of nutrient concentrations and the abundance of algae and sewage fungus. Both macroinvertebrate and algae communities shifted downstream of sewage input. Specifically, more tolerant groups, such as cyanobacteria and oligochaetes, were more abundant. The EPT (Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Tricoptera) water quality score was best explained by an interaction between month and agriculture in the surrounding landscape. Overall, our results show that sewage discharge has a significant impact on water quality and benthic riverine communities, regardless of the surrounding land uses. Agricultural inputs, however, could be more important than treated sewage discharge in reducing the abundance of sensitive invertebrate taxa. We need both improvements to wastewater treatment processes and reductions in agricultural pollution to reduce threats to vulnerable freshwater communities.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to assess and compare the water quality of the Gwebi and Mukuvisi Rivers, on the basis of selected physicochemical variables and macroinvertebrate community structure. Five sites where selected on both rivers and these were sampled on three separate occasions between January and July of 1998. The water variables measured were the concentrations of iron, chromium, zinc, lead, copper, manganese, chlorides, fluorides, sulphates, total phosphates, nitrates, ammonia, total dissolved salts, dissolved oxygen, biological oxygen demand, as well as pH, conductivity, temperature, water surface velocity and discharge. The concentration of most of the chemical variables was relatively similar along the course of the Gwebi River, but there were drastic increases in the levels of iron, chromium, copper, zinc, chlorides, fluorides, sulphates, and ammonia along the Mukuvisi River. The two rivers were different with respect to the physicochemical variables, with the exception of the first site on the Mukuvisi, which was similar to sites on the Gwebi River. This was because of the differences in the levels of human activities on the two rivers. Industrial, sewage and domestic pollution has had an adverse effect on the water quality of the Mukuvisi River. There was a sharp decline in the number of macroinvertebrate taxa along the Mukuvisi River. The lower reaches of the river where dominated by oligochaetes and Chironimidae larvae. Sample score classification of water quality based on the South African Scoring System Version 4 (SASS4) showed that most of the Mukuvisi river had poor quality water quality, whilst much of the Gwebi River had fair quality water. The HABS1 habitat assessment index was used to assess habitat quality at each site. Although much of the Mukuvisi recorded fair to good habitat scores and had generally higher habitat scores than sites on the Gwebi, the SASS scores were generally lower compared to those along the Gwebi. The sample scores and average score per taxon (ASPT) of the SASS4 showed that the Mukuvisi River was of much lower quality than the Gwebi. Both the sample score and ASPT were negatively and significantly (p<0.05) correlated to most of the physicochemical variables. The water quality variables accounted for 61.1% and 59.0% of the differences in the sample score and ASPT respectively. There was a marginal decrease in the Margalef and Shannon indices along the Gwebi River, but the Simpson's index remained relatively constant. Along the Mukuvisi River, there was a clear and distinct decrease in the magnitude of all three diversity indices, indicating decreasing macroinvertebrate community structure. The change in water physicochemical variables accounted for 61.3%, 69.2% and 87.2% of the changes in the Margalef, Shannon and Simpson's index respectively. The study provides evidence that the changes in macroinvertebrate community structure along the Mukuvisi River is due to decline in the water quality. On the Gwebi, water quality is not the main factor determining macroinvertebrate community structure.  相似文献

The compliance of macroalgal and macroinvertebrate assemblages to anthropogenic disturbance gradients (e.g., nutrient enrichment) was investigated at intertidal rocky shores. Macroalgae and macroinvertebrates presented parallel behavior, both showing shifts in the communities’ structural variation along the gradients, in which an higher number of opportunistic species (and higher abundances) were found in more stressful sites (close to the disturbance source), in contrast to less disturbed sites (far from the disturbance source), which showed higher presence of more sensitive species (and higher abundance of several of them).The macroinvertebrate abundance and taxonomic composition, which are parameters required by the Water Framework Directive (WFD) to be included in tools for the ecological quality status assessment, responded to the disturbance gradient. Results suggest that the macroinvertebrate biological element might be considered an indicator of disturbance in intertidal rocky shores as good as the macroalgae, and therefore the development of a specific methodology based solely on benthic macroinvertebrates of rocky shores, presently a gap in the ecological quality status assessment for the WFD, seems feasible.  相似文献

To support ecosystem-based management and achieve the Good Environmental Status (GES) of marine waters it is important to better comprehend the relationships between biodiversity and environmental disturbance (anthropogenic and natural). Biotic indices are widely used in studies to help understanding these relationships and to assess the environmental status of waters. In recent years, trait-based indices rapidly emerged as an alternative ‘functional’ approach to serve this purpose. In this study, we analysed how two indices based upon the mean (community-weighted mean trait value–CWM) and the diversity of multiple traits (Rao’s quadratic entropy–Rao) in a macroinvertebrate community respond to natural- and anthropogenic seafloor disturbance (effluents) and we compared their performance with the widely used AMBI and M-AMBI. Our results demonstrate that CWM and Rao were not effective in indicating anthropogenic disturbance in the Basque coast, Bay of Biscay. The main reason was probably that many traits did not have a strong link with this type of disturbance. Besides, the mechanistic links between certain traits and their response to anthropogenic seafloor disturbance in marine environments is currently not well understood. From a management perspective: the CWM does not provide a single value indicating a quality status, which makes it a difficult tool to use and interpret. This index is probably more useful for scientists who want to explore and understand different aspects of community functioning. On the other hand, Rao and other indices expressing trait diversity do provide a single value of functioning; therefore they could potentially be effectively used for management purposes. However, to improve its performance, detailed and accurate trait data is required, which is currently lacking for many marine species.  相似文献

1. In sub‐Saharan Africa, tropical forests are increasingly threatened by accelerating rates of forest conversion and degradation. In East Africa, the larger tracts of intact rainforest lie largely in protected areas surrounded by converted landscape. Thus, there is critical need to understand the functional links between large‐scale land use and changes in river conditions, and the implications of park boundaries on catchment integrity. 2. The objective of this study was to use the mosaic of heavily converted land and pristine forest created by the protection of the high‐altitude rainforest in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Uganda to explore effects of deforestation on aquatic systems and the value of forest in buffering effects of adjacent land conversion. A set of 16 sites was selected over four drainages to include four categories of deforestation: agricultural land, deforested upstream (of the park boundary), forest edge (park boundary) and forest. We predicted that forest buffer (downstream or on the edge) would moderate effects of deforestation. To address this prediction, we quantified relationships between disturbance level and both physicochemical characters and traits of the macroinvertebrate assemblages during six sampling periods (February 2003 and June 2004). 3. Results of both principal components analysis and cluster analyses indicated differences in limnological variables among deforestation categories. PC1 described a gradient from deforested sites with poor water quality to pristine forested sites with relatively good water quality. Agricultural sites and deforested upstream sites generally had the highest turbidity, total dissolved solids (TDS), and conductivity values and low transparency values. Forest sites and boundary site groups generally exhibited low turbidity, TDS, and conductivity values and high water transparency values. Sites also clustered according to deforestation categories; forest and forested edge sites formed a cluster independent of both agricultural land and deforested‐upstream. 4. Water transparency, water temperature, and pH were the most important factors predicting benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages. Sensitive invertebrate families of Trichoptera, Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, and Odonata dominated forested sites with high water transparency, low water temperature, and low pH while the tolerant families of Ephemeroptera, Diptera, Hemiptera, and Coleoptera were abundant in agriculturally impacted sites with low water transparency, high water temperature, and high pH. 5. This study provides support for the importance of riparian buffers in moderating effects of deforestation. Forest and forested edge sites were more similar in both limnological and macroinvertebrate assemblage structure than sites within or downstream from agricultural lands. If the protected area cannot encompass the catchment, the use of rivers as park boundaries may help to maintain the biological integrity of the rivers by buffering one side of the watercourse.  相似文献

This study assessed benthic macroinvertebrates and periphyton and its responses to managed river-flows, in riffles downstream of three dams on the Cotter River, Australian Capital Territory. Benthic macroinvertebrates and periphyton were also assessed in adjacent tributaries of the river, as well as in a nearby unregulated river and its tributaries. Food sources of four macroinvertebrate taxa (Leptophlebiidae, Elmidae, Glossosomatidae and Orthocladiinae) were determined by stable isotope analysis of the invertebrates and their potential food, in conjunction with examination of the gut contents of individual invertebrates. Components of benthic periphyton were the main food source for the selected taxa. Orthocladiinae consumed primarily amorphous detritus, while Elmidae, Glossosomatidae and Leptophlebiidae consumed diatoms. Enclosed benthic chambers were used to measure the response of benthic metabolism to monthly flow spikes released from one of the dams. The balance of benthic metabolism as measured by the Production/Respiration ratio (P/R) showed a shift towards production after the release of flow spikes. At sites downstream of the dams, there was more periphyton chlorophyll-a in the form of filamentous green algae than at sites in the unregulated river and the tributaries, and macroinvertebrate taxa using periphyton as a food resource were missing or reduced in abundance relative to sites without dams. However, the site downstream of the dam with environmental flow releases had more macroinvertebrate taxa and less periphyton cholorophyll-a content than sites downstream of dams without managed environmental flows, suggesting that a more suitable food supply resulting from environmental flow releases shifted macroinvertebrate communities towards those of unregulated streams.  相似文献

Freshwater ecosystems are affected by a variety of anthropogenic stressors. Temporal variability of biotic communities in these ecosystems makes it difficult to accurately assess the impacts of specific stressors, which has seldom been considered in understudied regions of Asia. We studied the seasonal effects of anthropogenic stressors on stream macroinvertebrates based on sampling every three months over two years at five stream sites in central Taiwan. Several macroinvertebrate metrics (taxon richness, Shannon diversity index, and relative abundance of Trichoptera) were lower during the wet season than the dry season. The presence of dams caused changes in the structure of macroinvertebrate communities, decreased the seasonal variability in relative abundances of Trichoptera, as well as resulted in lower dissolved inorganic nitrogen concentrations and larger substrate size. The presence of urban areas had less or no influence on environmental factors and structural changes. However, significantly lower total abundance, taxon richness, and relative abundance of Trichoptera occurred in the presence of either dams and/or urban areas. One key management implication from the present study is that bioassessment utilizing macroinvertebrates should be facilitated by awareness of the potential role of temporal factors on the effects of anthropogenic stressors, especially in monsoonal Asia.  相似文献
