Feeding of the bigeye flounder Hippoglossina macrops on the shrimp Heterocarpus reedi was analysed between 20 November and 4 December 1995. Feeding on H. reedi intensified between 0900 and 1600 hours with a second, smaller peak between 2300 and 0200 hours. Assuming an exponential gastric evacuation model, the gastric evacuation rate was estimated as 0·197 % W h −1 (95% CI=0·025–0·369). The daily ration decreased latitudinally from north to south from 3·62 to 2·66 and from 2·06 to 0·41 %W , respectively. Consumption was related positively to shrimp biomass and influenced by flounder size structure in the three fishing zones analysed and was estimated as 0·08–0·02% of the total shrimp biomass.  相似文献

A method is described whereby the efficiencies of two electric fishing machines may be compared by fishing a closed population on eight occasions at short intervals, the two fishing machines being used alternately. A practical example is given and the merits of the method are discussed.  相似文献

Studies of pulse-type gymnotiform electric fishes have suggested that electric organ discharge waveforms (EODw) allow individuals to discriminate between conspecific and allospecific signals, but few have approached this experimentally. Here we implement a phase-locked playback technique for a syntopic species pair, Brachyhypopomus gauderio and Gymnotus omarorum. Both species respond to changes in stimulus waveform with a transitory reduction in the interpulse interval of their self-generated discharge, providing strong evidence of discrimination. We also document sustained rate changes in response to different EODws, which may suggest recognition of natural waveforms.  相似文献

Electroreceptive afferents from A- and B-electroreceptor cells of mormyromasts and Knollenorgans were tested for their sensitivity to different stimulus waveforms in the weakly electric fish Gnathonemus petersii. Both A- and B-mormyromast cells had their lowest sensitivity to a waveform similar to the self-generated electric organ discharge (EOD) (around 0° phase-shift). Highest sensitivities, i.e. lowest response thresholds, in both A- and B-cells were measured at phase shifts of +135°. Thus, both cell types were inversely waveform tuned. The sensitivity of B-cells increased sharply with increasing waveform distortions. Their tuning curves had a sharp minimum of sensitivity at +7° phase shift. A-cells had a much broader waveform tuning with a plateau level of low sensitivity from +24° to −15°. Across a 360° cycle of phase-shifts, the range of thresholds was 16 dB for individual B-cells and 4.5 dB for individual A-cells. Knollenorgan afferents were tuned to 0° phase-shifted EODs and had a dynamic range of 12 dB. Lowest sensitivities were measured at a phase shift of +165°. Experiments with computer-generated stimuli revealed that the strong sensitivity of mormyromast B-cells of EOD waveform distortions cannot be attributed to any of the seven waveform parameters tested. In addition, EOD stimuli must have the correct duration for B-cells to respond to waveform distortions. Thus, waveform tuning appears to be based on the specific combination of several waveform parameters that occur only with natural EODs. Accepted: 28 April 1997  相似文献

This study explores the evolutionary origins of waveform complexity in electric organ discharges (EODs) of weakly electric fish. I attempt to answer the basic question of what selective forces led to the transition from the simplest signal to the second simplest signal in the gymnotiform electric fishes. The simplest electric signal is a monophasic pulse and the second simplest is a biphasic pulse. I consider five adaptive hypotheses for the evolutionary transition from a monophasic to a biphasic EOD: (i) electrolocation, (ii) sexual selection, (iii) species isolation, (iv) territory defense, (v) crypsis from electroreceptive predators. Evaluating these hypotheses with data drawn largely from the literature, I find best support for predation. Predation is typically viewed as a restraining force on evolution of communication signals, but among the electric fishes, predation appears to have served as a creative catalyst. In suppressing spectral energy in the sensitivity range of predators (a spectral simplification), the EOD waveforms have become more complex in their time domain structure. Complexity in the time domain is readily discernable by the high frequency electroreceptor systems of gymnotiform and mormyrid electric fish. The addition of phases to the EOD can cloak the EOD from predators, but also provides a substrate for subsequent modification by sexual selection. But, while juveniles and females remain protected from predators, breeding males modify their EODs in ways that enhance their conspicuousness to predators.  相似文献

In part I (. Biophys. J. 75:1712-1726), we presented a cellular model of the A- and B-electroreceptors of the weakly electric fish Gnathonemus petersii. The model made clear the cellular origin of the differences in the response functions of A- and B-receptors, which sensitively code the intensity of the fish's own electric organ discharge (EOD) and the variations in the EOD waveform, respectively. The main purpose of the present paper is to clarify the cellular origin of the inverse waveform tuning of the B-receptors by using the receptor model. Inverse waveform tuning means that B-receptors respond more sensitively to the 180 degrees inverted EOD than to undistorted or less distorted EODs. We investigated how the A- and B-receptor models respond to EODs with various waveforms, which are the phase-shifted EODs, whose shift angle is varied from -1 degrees to -180 degrees, and single-period sine wave stimuli of various frequencies. We show that the tuning properties of the B-receptors arise mainly from the combination of two attributes: 1) The waveform of the stimuli (Bstim) effectively sensed by the B-receptor cells. This consists of a first smaller and a second larger positive peak, even though in the original phase-shifted EOD stimuli, the amplitudes of the two positive peaks are reversed. 2) The effective time constant of dynamical response of the receptor cells. It is on the order of the duration of a single EOD pulse. We also calculated the response properties of the A- and B-receptor models when stimulated with natural EODs distorted by various capacitive and resistive objects. Furthermore, we investigated the effect of EOD amplitude on the receptor responses to capacitive and resistive objects. The models presented can systematically reproduce the experimentally observed response properties of natural A- and B-receptor cells. The mechanism producing these properties can be reasonably explained by the variation in the stimulus waveforms effectively sensed by the A- and B-receptor cells and by time constants.  相似文献

Weakly electric gymnotiform fish specialize in the regulation and modulation of the action potentials that make up their multi-purpose electric signals. To produce communication signals, gymnotiform fish modulate the waveforms of their electric organ discharges (EODs) over timescales spanning ten orders of magnitude within the animal’s life cycle: developmental, reproductive, circadian, and behavioral. Rapid changes lasting milliseconds to seconds are the result of direct neural control of action potential firing in the electric organ. Intermediate-term changes taking minutes to hours result from the action of melanocortin peptides, the pituitary hormones that induce skin darkening and cortisol release in many vertebrates. Long-term changes in the EOD waveform taking days to weeks result from the action of sex steroids on the electrocytes in the electric organ as well as changes in the neural control structures in the brain. These long-term changes in the electric organ seem to be associated with changes in the expression of voltage-gated ion channels in two gene families. Electric organs express multiple voltage-gated sodium channel genes, at least one of which seems to be regulated by androgens. Electric organs also express multiple subunits of the shaker (Kv1) family of voltage-gated potassium channels. Expression of the Kv1 subtype has been found to vary with the duration of the waveform in the electric signal. Our increasing understanding of the mechanisms underlying precise control of electric communication signals may yield significant insights into the diversity of natural mechanisms available for modifying the performance of ion channels in excitable membranes. These mechanisms may lead to better understanding of normal function in a wide range of physiological systems and future application in treatment of disease states involving pathology of excitable membranes.  相似文献

In several species of electric fish with a sex difference in their pulse-type electric organ discharge (EOD), the action potential-generating cells of the electric organ (electrocytes) of males are larger and more invaginated compared to females. Androgen treatment of females and juveniles produces a longer-duration EOD pulse that mimics the mature male EOD, with a concurrent increase in electrocyte size and/or membrane infolding. In Sternopygus macrurus, which generates a wave-type EOD, androgen also increases EOD pulse duration. To investigate possible morphological correlates of hormone-dependent changes in EOD in Sternopygus, we examined electric organs from both fish collected in the field, and untreated and androgen-treated specimens in the laboratory. The electrocytes are cigar shaped, with prominent papillae on the posterior, innervated end. Electrocytes of field-caught specimens were significantly larger in all parameters than were electrocytes of specimens maintained in the laboratory. EOD pulse duration and frequency were highly correlated, and were significantly different between the sexes in sexually mature fish. Nevertheless, no sex difference in electrocyte morphology was observed, nor did any parameters of electrocyte morphology correlate with EOD pulse duration or frequency. Further, whereas androgen treatment significantly lowered EOD frequency and broadened EOD pulse duration, there was no difference in electrocyte morphology between hormone-treated and control groups. Thus, in contrast to results from studies on both mormyrid and gymnotiform pulse fish, electrocyte morphology is not correlated with EOD waveform characteristics in the gymnotiform wave-type fish Sternopygus. The data, therefore, suggest that sex differences in EOD are dependent on changes in active electrical properties of electrocyte membranes. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Qualitative fish sampling (single catch) using three methods (electric fishing, gillnets, seine nets) was assessed at three sites in the Ivai River (Paraná State, Brazil) to check their usefulness for quick inventory investigations. Electric fishing at a constant effort (15 min per each) was considered to be the best sampling technique. Taxon richness was calculated as the expected number of species using a rarefraction technique. Samples of 300–325 individuals, and 6–10 repetitions in neighbouring segments were sufficient. Even though electric fishing was conducted with the same effort in similar segments at each site there were many differences in species abundance. This suggests that the estimated fish specimen number obtained with constant effort is of limited validity on one sampling occasion and may be best considered as an ‘index of density’ only. The differences may partially be caused by the segments being located along the right and left bank of the large river (problem of different habitats). Qualitative and quantitative differences between electric fishing, gill-netting and seine-netting samples were very high at a high significance level. Nevertheless, as 22.4% taxa were caught only by gill or seine nets, these gears were important for complementing the species list. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

At the southern boundary of gymnotiform distribution in America. water temperature changes seasonally, and may be an environmental cue for the onset of breeding. In this study, we aim to describe the role of temperature upon electric organ discharge waveform in Gymnotus carapo, order Gymnotiformes, family Gymnotidae, and to analyze its interactions with the effects of steroid hormones. The effects of water temperature within its natural range were explored using different protocols. All fish tested had temperature-sensitive electric organ discharge waveforms: the amplitude of the last head-negative component (V4) decreased as temperature increased. Rate increases elicited by electrical stimulation had similar but smaller effect on waveform. Temperature sensitivity is a peripheral phenomenon that depends on the conductivity of the aquatic media. We found hormonal-dependent changes in the electric organ discharge waveform not previously described in this species. The amplitude and duration of V4 increased after testosterone administration. Both testosterone treatment and acclimation by sustained temperature at 27-28 degrees C (environmental simulation of breeding conditions) induced a decrease in temperature sensitivity. As in the related species Brachyhypopomus pinnicaudatus, our data strongly suggest interactions between temperature sensitivity of the electric organ discharge waveform and sexual maturity that might be crucial for reproduction.  相似文献

Human promyelocytic leukaemia HL-60 cells which have been differentiated by DMSO to granulocytes were used to investigate the effect of different waveforms on the release of interleukine-8 (IL-8). The cells were prestimulated with 100 pM fMLP and subsequently treated for 15 min with different electrical fields and currents. Three hours later the release of IL-8 into the medium was determined by ELISA. Varying the frequency of the sinusoidal electrical current between 0 and 20 Hz resulted in 2 maxima of IL-8 release at 5 and 13 Hz. Prestimulated cells were treated with sine-, triangular-, and rectangular-waveforms at 5 Hz in the current intensity range of 0-3 mA/cm(2). For the three waveforms tested, the IL-8 release was enhanced 1.5 fold. Treatment of the cells with capacitively coupled electric fields of 5 Hz using field strengths between 0 and 10 V(eff)/cm had no effect on the release of IL-8. In comparison to the positive results after sine wave exposure alone, an exposure with sine wave current to which noise had been superimposed had no effect on the HL-60 cells. From these investigations it can be concluded that for electrical current treatment of prestimulated HL-60 cells the release of IL-8 does not depend on the waveform if the waveform information is not destroyed by superimposed noise.  相似文献

Analysis of electric field stimulation of single cardiac muscle cells.   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Electrical stimulation of cardiac cells by imposed extracellular electric fields results in a transmembrane potential which is highly nonuniform, with one end of the cell depolarized and the other end hyperpolarized along the field direction. To date, the implications of the close proximity of oppositely polarized membranes on excitability have not been explored. In this work we compare the biophysical basis for field stimulation of cells at rest with that for intracellular current injection, using three Luo-Rudy type membrane patches coupled together as a lumped model to represent the cell membrane. Our model shows that cell excitation is a function of the temporal and spatial distribution of ionic currents and transmembrane potential. The extracellular and intracellular forms of stimulation were compared in greater detail for monophasic and symmetric biphasic rectangular pulses, with duration ranging from 0.5 to 10 ms. Strength-duration curves derived for field stimulation show that over a wide range of pulse durations, biphasic waveforms can recruit and activate membrane patches about as effectively as can monophasic waveforms having the same total pulse duration. We find that excitation with biphasic stimulation results from a synergistic, temporal summation of inward currents through the sodium channel in membrane patches at opposite ends of the cell. Furthermore, with both waveform types, a net inward current through the inwardly rectifying potassium channel contributes to initial membrane depolarization. In contrast, models of stimulation by intracellular current injection do not account for the nonuniformity of transmembrane potential and produce substantially different (even contradictory) results for the case of stimulation from rest.  相似文献

Summary The electric organ discharge (EOD) potential was mapped on the skin and midplane of several Apteronotus leptorhynchus. The frequency components of the EOD on the surface of the fish have extremely stable amplitude and phase. However, the waveform varies considerably with different positions on the body surface. Peaks and zero crossings of the potential propagate along the fish's body, and there is no point where the potential is always zero. The EOD differs significantly from a sinusoid over at least one third of the body and tail. A qualitative comparison between fish showed that each individual had a unique spatiotemporal pattern of the EOD potential on its body. The potential waveforms have been assembled into high temporal and spatial resolution maps which show the dynamics of the EOD. Animation sequences and Macintosh software are available by anonymous ftp (mordor.cns.caltech.edu; cd/pub/ElectricFish).We interpret the EOD maps in terms of ramifications on electric organ control and electroreception. The electrocytes comprising the electric organ do not all fire in unison, indicating that the command pathway is not synchronized overall. The maps suggest that electroreceptors in different regions fulfill different computational roles in electroreception. Receptor mechanisms may exist to make use of the phase information or harmonic content of the EOD, so that both spatial and temporal patterns could contribute information useful for electrolocation and communication.Abbreviations EOD electric organ discharge - EO electric organ - CV coefficient of variance  相似文献

Traditional community fishing methods commonly employed in the tropical Pacific were used to generate information on the fishery biology of Acanthurus nigrofuscus at Woleai Atoll, Micronesia, over a short time period. A simple depletion model was used to estimate the biomass of A. nigrofuscus at four back reef lagoon sites at Woleai, using two different fishing methods; spear fishing and drive-in-net fishing. The mean biomass and density of A. nigrofuscus on the lagoon reefs was 8000 g ha −1 and 183 fish ha −1 respectively, with a total estimated standing stock for the lagoon of 91 500 fish or a biomass of 4·0 t. The size frequencies of fish caught by spear fishing were biased towards larger sized individuals, while those from drive-in-net fishing were thought to be more representative of the true population size frequencies. Variation in the density and biomass of A. nigrofuscus at the four reef sites was thought to be due to the length of time between episodes of community fishing at each reef site. The sex ratio (male: female) of A. nigrofuscus was significantly different from unity (1: 0·47) and males grew larger than females. Sexually mature fish were present in all size classes above the minimum capture length and spawning activity was greatest during the period of the full moon.  相似文献

The hatching dates of Encrasicholina punctifer and Engraulis japonicus larvae collected in the coastal waters off Tanshui River Estuary during the fishing seasons of 1992 and 1993 indicated that these two anchovies had protracted spawning seasons, which resulted in multiple recruitment cohorts. Encrasicholina punctifer larvae recruited to the estuary from October to March, while the majority of E. japonicus larvae came in March-May and to a lesser extent in October and November. The E. punctifer larvae on arrival to the estuary were 17·4–35·6 mm in length, 167ndash;89 days old and had growth rates of 0·4–1·0 mm day−1, E. japonicus larvae were 12·1–32·7 mm in length, 19–62 days old and had growth rates of 0·7–0·9 mm day−1. Growth rates were significantly different among cohorts and positively correlated to water temperature.  相似文献

Women's fishing in Oceania has been overlooked in most subsistence studies in the region and, as a consequence, there are few quantitative data available upon which to base an assessment of its importance. However, in the present study, the few data available on women's fishing in Oceania are examined, and these show that women contribute significantly to marine food yields in the region. Also, it is suggested that the highly regular nature of women's fishing makes women more reliable, and therefore more effective than men as suppliers of protein for subsistence. The implications of these findings for future development policies in the region are then discussed.  相似文献

In the present study, alternative potential stimulation with rectangular pulse, sine and triangular waveforms at 10 and 100Hz was applied to cells cultured on an ITO electrode. As a result, we found that the alternating potential waveform dependence induced by the frequency on membrane damage of cells cultured on an electrode surface. The cell membrane damage was promoted by a rectangular pulse wave in comparison with sine and triangular waves, when alternating electrical potentials of 0 to +1.0V at 100Hz were loaded. In contrast, this waveform dependence was not observed when the frequency was 10Hz. Furthermore, it was found that cell membrane damage was induced at positive potentials more than +0.8V under the present experimental conditions.  相似文献

Swimming speed and average electromyogram (EMG) pulse intervals were highly correlated in individual lake trout Salvelinus namaycush ( r 2=0·52–0·89) and brown trout Salmo trutta ( r 2=0·45–0·96). High correlations were found also for pooled data in both lake trout ( r 2=0·90) and brown trout of the Emå stock ( r 2=0·96) and Lærdal stock ( r 2=0·96). The linear relationship between swimming speed and average EMG pulse intervals differed significantly among lake trout and the brown trout stocks. This successful calibration of EMGs to swimming speed opens the possibility of recording swimming speed of free swimming lake trout and brown trout in situ . EMGs can also be calibrated to oxygen consumption to record energy expenditure.  相似文献
