The influence of hair color on the trace elemental status in horse's hair has been studied. A current analytical technique such as particle-induced X-ray emission (PIXE) used in this study has provided reliable, rapid, easy, and relatively inexpensive diagnostic methods. Twenty-eight elements (Al, Br, Ca, Cl, Co, Cu, Cr, Fe, Ga, Hg, K, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, Nb, Ni, P, Pb, Rb, S, Se, Si, Sr, Ti, V, Y, and Zn) in mane hair were detected by the PIXE method. The gray hair contains significantly greter amounts of Cu, Ti, and Zn, and lower amounts of Br, Ca, Se, and Sr than those in other colored horse hairs (p<0.05). Those results measured in the horse's hair were similar to those found in human and dog hair. When interpreting a result, it should be kept in mind that hair color, especially gray hair, influences the concentrations of some elements in horse hair.  相似文献

The elemental composition of the human atherosclerotic popliteal artery was examined using the proton-induced X-ray-emission (PIXE) method. The application of a narrow proton beam (3 X 10 micron 2) enabled us to determine not only the concentrations of Cl, K, Ca, Fe, Cu, Zn, Br and Pb, but also their localization in different artery-wall regions. The highest mean concentrations of Cl, K, Zn and Br were found in the tunica media. In the investigated sections the distribution of Ca and Fe varied: sometimes, these elements were prevalent in the tunica intima, whereas in other cases, the highest concentrations were observed in the tunica media or tunica adventitia. The concentration profiles of each element were characterized by many sharp, narrow peaks. The highest concentrations of Ca and Fe showed such high levels that only one explanation is possible, i.e. the presence of crystals. The correlation of Ca peaks with those of Zn and Fe is discussed. The usefulness of the micro-PIXE method for the investigation of biomedical materials is also considered.  相似文献

Environment, sex, and age are the main factors which determine the elemental composition of hair. The objective of the study is to determine the contents of calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), lead (Pb), and cadmium (Cd) in girls’ and boys’ hair in five age groups (within 1–19-year range) corresponding to successive human ontogenesis phases as well as to evaluate the relationships between these elements. Quantitative analysis has been carried out using atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS). Experimental results were analyzed using classic and principal component (PCA) statistical analyses. In particular, differences between contents of particularly Ca, Mg, and Zn in girls’ and boys’ hair were found, and substantial differences between age groups were stated. In general, larger amounts of Ca, Mg, and Zn as compared to boys’ hair have been observed for girls’ hair and higher toxic element (Pb, Cd) contents for boys were measured in some age groups. An increasing trend was found for bioelements (Ca, Mg, Zn) both for girls and boys in all age groups, while for Cu and Fe content, changes are insignificant and even decreasing for teenagers. The most frequently correlating element pairs are Ca–Mg, Ca–Zn, Mg–Zn, and Pb–Cd. Classic and PCA statistics show, in general, a satisfactory consistence. The elemental composition of hair varies depending on the gender and age of children and young people.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the relationships between the mean concentrations of trace elements and the severity of the seconddegree atrioventricular (AV) block in the mane hair of horses. Electrocardiographs of horses were continually recorded for 6 h using a holter cardiac monitor to determine dropped ventricular beats (DVBs) which can be used as an indicator of the severity of the AV block. Mane hair Ca, Cu, Mg, and Zn concentrations were measured by the particle-induced X-ray emission method. The Zn/Cu ratio and Ca concentration in mane hair were significantly and positively correlated with the hourly DVBs in horse with a second-degree AV block (p<0.01, r2=0.485; p<0.05, r2=0.351, respectively). Proposed diagnostic cutoff points for hair Ca concentration and Zn/Cu ratio based on receiver operating characteristics curves analysis in detecting second-degree AV block were set at 1536 μg/g and 26.0, respectively. Those results with horse hair suggest that the evaluation of the Ca, Cu, Mg, and Zn status in mane hair by this method is strongly related to the severity of second-degree AV block and might predict the susceptibility of an individual much before the development of the symptom.  相似文献

External beam PIXE (Particle Induced X-ray Emission) analysis with a proton beam of 2.4 MeV was used to study trace element concentrations in human nails. The suitability of PIXE analysis regarding nail samples without any pretreatment besides washing was investigated. The main emphasis has been on the ability to obtain absolute concentration values and a new accurate method for nail sample standardization has been developed. Concentration values for the elements Ca, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Se, Br, and Pb were determined from human nail samples. A comparison was made with nail samples taken from different fingers and toes to monitor intraindividual variation, and nails of different healthy individuals to get a view of the interindividual differences. The concentrations were also measured in relation to time in order to observe any possible short-term changes. The results are compared with the previous studies reported in the literature. The nail analysis is also compared to hair analysis in terms of detection limits, number of elements determinable, and standardization of the results.  相似文献

Diabetes mellitus is characterized by hyperglycemia and is closely related to trace elements. Quite a few pregnant women suffer from impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) or gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Investigation of the changes of elemental contents in serum of the pregnant women with IGT and GDM is significant in the etiological research and cure of the diseases. In the present work, the elements Cu, Zn, Ca, Sr, Mg, P, Fe, and Al in the serum of pregnant women were determined. The elemental contents in different experimental groups were compared. Also, the correlation between elemental contents and gestational period was observed. The results showed that compared with normal pregnant women, the Cu contents in serum of pregnant women with GDM increased, but Zn contents had a decreasing trend. In addition, for all pregnant women, the Ca contents in serum had an obvious inverse correlation with gestational period.  相似文献

The trace elements of both calcified atherosclerotic plaques and plaque-free vessel walls of the carotid bifurcation from 31 autopsies were investigated using the proton-induced X-ray emission (PIXE) method. The trace elements studied were phosphorus (P), calcium (Ca), chrome (Cr), iron (Fe), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), lead (Pb), selenium (Se), bromine (Br), strontium (Sr), and rubidium (Rb). All samples contained Fe and Zn. Mercury (Hg) was not detected in any of the samples studied. All plaque-free samples contained Cu and almost all Br and Ca, none Sr. All calcified atherosclerotic plaques contained Ca and almost all Br and Sr. The relative levels of Ca were higher in the calcified plaques than in the plaque-free vessel walls. The relative value of Ca in calcified and uncalcified samples was greatest in the group who had died because of cardiovascular disorders and smallest in the group who had died from other causes. There was a strong positive correlation between the Ca and Sr of the plaque samples and between the P and Br of the plaque-free samples.  相似文献

Proton-induced X-ray emission (PIXE) method was employed to study the concentration of heavy elements in betel leaves, betel nuts, and mineral lime consumed in Bangladesh. The samples were collected from different parts of Bangladesh and analyzed by the thicktarget external beam technique of the PIXE method. The samples were exposed to the proton beam as 1-mm thick pellets and irradiated with 2.0-MeV protons having 20-nA beam intensity. The concentration of some 15 elements (K, Ca, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Se, Br, Rb, Sr, and Pb) was measured by comparison with a calibration curve constructed from the NBS orchard leaf standard SRM 1571. The validity of the procedure has been established by comparative measurements of Cu and Zn with atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The significance of the results is discussed in view of their implications in health and disease.  相似文献

Proton-induced X-ray emission (PIXE) analysis was employed to determine the concentrations of six elements in the plasma and erythrocytes of 18 cancer subjects (15 males and 3 females) with neoplastic disorders and in 70 controls (35 males and 35 females). It was found that the concentrations of Br, K, and Zn were significantly elevated in the erythrocytes of the cancer subjects compared to the controls, whereas the concentration of Fe was significantly depressed, but with no difference observed in the concentration of Ca. In the plasma, the concentrations of Br, Cu, Ca, and K were significantly elevated, whereas the concentrations of Fe and Zn were found to be significantly depressed compared to the controls.  相似文献

Variations in trace element concentration in the head and facial hair of five individuals with ever-increasing amounts of white hair were examined. Hair was collected from the scalp, cheeks, and chin from one donor on a regular basis since 1984. Samples were separated into white and pigmented fractions, and analyzed at SLOWPOKE-Toronto by INAA for the short-lived, isotope-producing elements Br, Ca, Cl, Cu, I, Mg, Mn, Na, S, and Zn. Temporal concentration variations of these elements over time, and variations of the elemental concentrations in pigmented and white hair were established.

The determination of trace and ultratrace elements in human serum by ICP-MS is described. The accuracy of the method is tested using a “second generation” human serum reference material. Elements determined include Fe, Co, Cu, Zn, Br, Rb, Sr, Mo, and Cs. The method is compared to nuclear analytical methods (NAA, PIXE). Perspectives for the future are also discussed.  相似文献

Diethylnitrosamine (DEN) was used as cancer-inducing agent in the experimental animals.Vinca rosea extract was supplemented with the drinking water as a chemopreventive agent. After 4 wk of treatment, animals were sacrificed and livers were excised. Nuclei and mitochondria were separated by differential centrifugation. The proton-induced X-ray emission technique has been used as the analytical method. Elemental analysis were performed for whole liver, nuclei, and mitochondria.V. rosea plant parts were also analyzed for elemental contents. Treatment with DEN caused an increase of Ni, Zn, and Cr levels in the whole liver and nuclei. There is an increase in Fe concentration in the liver, although the level decreased in mitochondria. The concentrations of Br and Ca were unchanged in the liver as a whole, but there were substantial increases of Br in nuclei and mitochondria, whereas Ca levels depleted drastically in these two organelles.Vinca extracts were effective in reverting the changes in the elemental concentration in the hepatic tissue as a whole, but were not that effective at subcellular levels.  相似文献

A new technique for investigation of elemental concentrations in subfractions of blood plasma is presented. The method is composed of the ultrafiltration of plasma in the presence of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and the measurement of the elemental composition by proton-induced X-ray emission (PIXE). The blood samples were collected from both healthy persons and patients suffering from breast cancer. The main emphasis in this study was on the determination of loosely bound copper (Cu) in plasma subfractions containing substances with molecular mass under 10,000, but zinc (Zn) and iron (Fe) contents of these fractions were also determined. The detection limits obtained with this method for Cu, Zn and Fe were ≈10 ppb (wet wt).  相似文献

Gastric, hepatic, and pulmonary cancer cell lines, and the third passage of normal gastric and pulmonary cell lines were analyzed by proton induced X-ray emission (PIXE) method. The contents of element Sr, Ca, Fe, Zn, P, K, Cu, and As in the cell lines were determined. The Sr, Ca, Fe, Zn, and As contents in cancer cell lines were significantly lower than those in the normal cell lines (p less than 0.05), whereas there were no significant differences for the P, K, and Cu contents (p greater than 0.1). The results suggest that the need of some essential elements has been diminished in cancer cell proliferation.  相似文献

The concentrations of a number of elements are determined in the plasma and erythrocytes of 21 Nigerians (11 females, 10 males) with symptomatic affective disorders (11 depressives, 10 manics) and in 40 normal controls using proton-induced X-ray emission (PIXE) analysis. The study shows that there is significant elevation of plasma K and Zn, as well as the erythrocyte S in the patients relative to the controls. The plasma and erythrocyte Cu, and the erythrocyte P, Ca, Fe, and Zn are significantly lower in the patients compared to the controls. However, the plasma levels of Ca, S, Fe, and Br are similar in both the patients and the controls. Similarly, the concentrations of K, Br, and Rb show no significant difference in the erythrocytes of patients and controls.  相似文献

We investigated element accumulation in the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus Glomus intraradices. Fungal spores and mycelia growing in monoxenic cultures were analyzed. The elemental composition was quantified using particle-induced X-ray emission (PIXE) in combination with scanning transmission ion microscopy. In the spores, Ca and Fe were associated mainly with the spore wall, while P and K showed patchy distributions and their concentrations were correlated. Excess of P in the hyphal growth medium increased the P and Si concentrations in spores and increased the K/Ca ratio in spores. Increased P availability decreased the concentration of Zn and Mn in spores. We concluded that the availability of P influences the uptake and accumulation of several elements in spores. It is demonstrated that PIXE analysis is a powerful tool for quantitative analysis of elemental accumulation in fungal mycelia.  相似文献

Particle-induced x-ray emission (PIXE) was used to determine the trace element content of bovine retinal disk membranes. PIXE is a multielemental analytical technique capable of the simultaneous detection and quantization of all elements from sodium and above in atomic number. The multielemental capability of PIXE allows the analysis time per element to be very low if a number of elements are detected in each sample. In addition, the multielemental capability of PIXE can be used to determine elemental content with respect to an internal reference. Here the content of detected trace element per rhodopsin was determined without recourse to an external rhodopsin assay. This was accomplished by using the sulfur content of rhodopsin as an internal reference. Detected trace element contents per rhodopsin were 1.58 +/- 0.049 Ca, 0.081 +/- 0.024 Fe, 0.393 +/- 0.200 Cu, and 0.150 +/- 0.031 Zn. Upper limits were placed on the amount of manganese, molybdenum, and nickel per rhodopsin as 0.019, 0.019, and 0.006, respectively. Two proteins known to be present in disk membranes, retinol dehydrogenase and a large protein, approximately 238,000 mol wt, are considered as potential metallo-proteins. No correlation was observed between the content of any detected element and bleaching levels.  相似文献

Hair samples of some young sickle cell anemia (SCA) and control patients in Nigeria were analyzed for 12 elements, viz, Se, Hg, Cr, Fe, Zn, Co, Cu, Br, As, Sb, Na, and Sc, using Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis (INAA).

With the exception of Cu, which was found to be significantly higher in the hair of SCA patients (at the 0.05 level of the t-test), there were generally no significant differences in elemental concentrations within the two groups. A preliminary study of the elemental contents of the fingernails of the same subjects showed a higher abundance of most of the elements in nail than in hair. These preliminary results were compared with similar studies from some other parts of the world.
