Abstract.  1. Population and individual colony characteristics of Nasutitermes acajutlae on St John, U.S. Virgin Islands were studied over a 5-year period.
2. Four habitat types (dry forests, moist forests, sparse vegetation, and woodlands) were sampled for N. acajutlae , using quadrat-based methods. Lying dead wood was also quantified in the same sites.
3. Habitats differed significantly in the volume of lying dead wood, and total termite nest volume within quadrats was positively related to wood volume. It was hypothesised that the volume of dead wood affected growth, reproduction, and yearly survival of individual colonies.
4. In a sample of > 100 colonies assessed in 1998, 2000, 2001, and 2002, no significant differences in the growth rate of colonies (= increase in nest volume) could be found between habitat types; however, colonies in sparse vegetation were smaller, less likely to survive, and reproduced at a smaller size compared with those in the other three habitats.
5. Overall nest volume in sparse vegetation was high, compared with dry and moist forest, but colonies showed, on average, poorer survival (interpreted as lower fitness), and produced alates at an early stage of development. Optimum habitat characteristics for N. acajutlae may include not only favourable microclimate but also the reliable acquisition of new dead wood after storms.  相似文献

Populations of the estuarine glass fish, Ambassis vachelli Richardson, were used to study the relationship between somatic growth and widths of daily increments in the sagittal otoliths. Variations in the somatic growth of A. vachelli were induced by a series of experimental feeding regimes which included feeding to satiation with two food sources and a starvation treatment. After 33 days of exposure to the experimental feeding regimes significant differences in the mean wet weight of individuals amongst the feeding treatments were recorded. Fishes subject to a starvation treatment showed a significant reduction in wet weight compared to the pretreatment population and the two experimental feeding regimes. No changes in lengths of fishes were recorded.
Validation techniques revealed that daily increments were laid down in the sagittal and asteriscal otoliths. Estimates of ring widths from samples of sagittal otoliths revealed significant treatment effects. The increments of fishes from the starvation treatment showed a significant decline in mean increment width relative to the feeding treatments. This difference was detected only after a 15 day period of experimental feeding. It is suggested that the gradual decline in increment width reflects the exhaustion of readily mobilized energy reserves.  相似文献

Aims:  The aim of this study was to extract information on cell number and colony volume dynamics of Salmonella Typhimurium colonies.
Methods and Results:  Both cell number and colony volume of Salmonella Typhimurium in gelatin were monitored during the exponential and the stationary phase with varying pH and water activity, by plate counts and microscopic image analysis respectively. The exponential growth rates of cell numbers and colony volumes were correlated. The exponential growth rate of cell numbers was estimated based on this correlation and a secondary model that describes the effect of pH and water activity on the growth rate of the colony volumes. During the stationary phase, the cell number was constant, while colony volume increased, thus indicating the formation of a dead fraction. Models were developed to describe the living and dead population.
Conclusions:  By comparing colony volumes and cell numbers, the formation of dead fraction can be noticed from the beginning of the stationary phase, which indicates that the stationary phase is a dynamic – including both cell death and cell growth – rather than a static phase.
Significance and Impact of the Study:  This study was the first to investigate the proportion of living and dead bacteria within a stationary colony quantitatively.  相似文献

Aims:  To study the ability of daily applications of Streptococcus rattus strain JH145 to affect the numbers of an implanted Streptococcus mutans strain in a rat model.
Methods and Results:  A spontaneous L(+)-lactate dehydrogenase (LDH)-deficient mutant of Streptococcus rattus , JH146, was isolated by screening on selective medium and compared with a previously isolated spontaneous LDH deficient strain, JH145. Both strains were shown to have single base pair deletion mutations in the structural gene ( ldh ) for LDH, and reversion frequencies were approximately the same. Animals treated once daily with ≥106 CFU (colony forming units) of JH145 showed a statistically significant decrease in the proportion of implanted S. mutans to total cultivable bacteria in oral swab samples. The rate of decrease in S. mutans levels was dose-dependent. No adverse effects were observed by in-life observation of treated animals, and histopathological, haematological and blood chemistry analyses were unremarkable.
Conclusions:  The results presented indicate that daily application of JH145, a naturally occurring LDH-deficient variant of S. rattus , can compete with S. mutans for its habitat on the tooth surface.
Significance and Impact of the Study:  S. rattus JH145 has potential as a probiotic for use in the prevention of dental caries.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. The red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), is an invasive species of south-eastern U.S.A. Since its introduction from South America approximately 70 years ago, this pest has devastated natural biodiversity.
2. Due to such ecological costs, Pseudacteon phorid fly parasitoids (Diptera: Phoridae) from South America are being introduced into the U.S.A. as a potential biological control agent. Here, the indirect effects of these specialised parasitoids on an interspecific native ant competitor, Forelius mccooki (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), are evaluated.
3. Over the course of a 50-day laboratory experiment, the results show that the native ant improved aspects of exploitative, but not interference, competition when S. invicta -attacking flies were present compared with when they were absent.
4.  Forelius mccooki colonies from the phorid treatment had approximately twice as many foragers at food baits relative to controls; however, there was no significant difference in interference aspects of competition or native ant colony growth between the two treatments.
5. These results suggest that the S. invicta -specialised parasitoids help shift the competitive balance more in favour of F. mccooki than if these flies were not present; however, this competitive advantage does not translate into increased colony growth after 50 days. These laboratory findings are interpreted with regard to the more complex interactions in the field.  相似文献

1. The effects of Daphnia infochemicals on the morphology and biochemical composition of Scenedesmus were studied and subsequently their influence on Daphnia life history. Three species of Scenedesmus ( S. acutus, S. obliquus and S. subspicatus ) were tested for Daphnia -induced colony formation. Life history experiments were performed with Daphnia cucullata and D. magna feeding on unicellular or colonial S. acutus.
2. Colony formation was promoted when S. acutus and S. obliquus were exposed to filtered water from a D. magna culture. S. subspicatus did not form colonies when exposed to culture water, but showed some colony formation when exposed to live D. magna.
3. No clear differences were found in total lipid, protein or carbohydrate content between the unicellular and colonial ecomorphs of the three Scenedesmus species. However, fatty acid (FA) concentration and composition were changed. Total FA as a percentage of frozen dry weight (DW) were increased in colonies. The ratio of monounsaturated (MUFA) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) and the ratio of ω3 : ω6 fatty acids decreased in colonies.
4. A short-term grazing experiment with three size classes of Scenedesmus revealed lower clearance rates for small Daphnia when feeding on large colonial Scenedesmus.
5. Life history parameters of both Daphnia species were influenced by food type. The intrinsic rate of population increase ( r) was significantly lower for daphnids feeding on colonies.
6. The negative influence of colonial Scenedesmus on population growth of Daphnia seems to be determined by algal morphology rather than biochemical composition.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. The reproductive cycle and growth of Craterocephalus marjoriae and Craterocephalus stercusmuscarum (Atherinidae) were studied in Brisbane, south-eastern Queensland, over a 17-month period (1981–82).
2. Both species had a 5-month breeding season in spring and summer, with a breeding peak in spring (September-October). Multiple spawning occurred but life time fecundity was not determined.
3. Gonosomatic index values and mean fecundity per female were higher in Craterocephalus marjoriae than in C. stercusmuscarum. Fecundity increased with body length in both species according to the relationship, F=aLb. Growth rates were similar and growth was adequately described by the von Bertalanffy equation. Both species grew rapidly during the first year and reached maturity the following season. Reproductive strategies are considered in relation to seasonal flooding in the streams inhabited.  相似文献

Abstract.  1. An ecological investigation of the shore fly community was carried out in a salt marsh in Novosedly in the Czech Republic.
2. Sampling was carried out in 1997 and 1999 at approximately 14-day intervals during the seasonally active period, using yellow water traps.
3. Altogether 14 374 specimens of the family Ephydridae were collected (6040 in 1997 and 8334 in 1999), belonging to 48 shore fly species (37 in 1997 and 41 in 1999).
4. Community structure, species richness, species diversity, evenness, and seasonal and inter-annual changes were studied. The species richness, species diversity, and evenness of the shore fly community in 1999 were higher than in 1997 but inter-annual difference in species diversity was not statistically significant. Paracoenia fumosa , Scatella tenuicosta , and Hydrellia albilabris were found to be the most abundant species in both study years.
5. Seasonal patterns and phenology of the most abundant species are discussed. Hydrellia albilabris showed similar seasonal distribution of abundance in 1997 and 1999, whereas seasonal distribution of P. fumosa and S. tenuicosta varied between the study years. Paracoenia fumosa , Hydrellia griseola , H. albilabris , Scatella paludum , S. tenuicosta , and Philotelma defecta were found to occur throughout the whole observation period from March until November while Notiphila cinerea , Hydrellia ischiaca , and Psilopa nigritella appeared in a limited period only.  相似文献

自安徽、山东、湖北、江苏等地多点采集棉花红腐病、水稻恶苗病、玉米穗腐病的病组织,经分离、鉴定和纯化,获得107个串珠镰孢(Fusarium monilifoFine)菌株。对上述来源于棉花、水稻、玉米的串珠镰孢的菌落形态、生长速率和产孢量等生物学性状及其在无性后代的遗传与变异进行了研究。结果表明,不同寄主来源的串珠镰孢菌株的菌丝生长温度范围和最适温度大致相同,但在菌落形态特别是色素方面存在明显差异,生长速率和产孢量也存在显著差异。棉花菌株的平均生长速率最大,玉米菌株生长速率最小,水稻菌株生长速率居中,相同群体的不同菌株间生长速率有极显著差异;玉米菌株产孢量最大,棉花菌株产孢量最小,水稻菌株产孢量居中。方差分析显示,不同寄主菌株群体间产孢量存在显著差异,而同一寄主群体的不同菌株间产孢量均无显著差异,说明菌株产孢量大小主要与其寄主种类有关,而与地区来源关系不大。遗传测定结果表明,分离自棉花、玉米和水稻的串珠镰孢的菌落形态和生长速率在单分生孢子后代均可稳定遗传;产孢量性状遗传有两种情况:分离自棉花和水稻的串珠镰孢菌株Fm1和Fm31的产孢量性状在单分生孢子后代均可稳定遗传,而分离白玉米的串珠镰孢菌株Fm19的产孢量性状在单分生孢子第一代(CG1)发生变异。  相似文献

SUMMARY 1. Larvae of the caddisfly Limnephilus externus grew faster than those of Nemotaulius hostilis in a permanent pond in southern Alberta.
2. We investigated whether this was due to more efficient food processing by L. externus , whether their growth coincided with high environmental temperatures, or whether they had the ability to choose and exploit higher quality food.
3. Of five foods used, protein content was highest in wheat flakes, similar in alder, bur-reed and willow leaves, and lowest in the moss Leptodictyum .
4. Both species grew faster and survived better on the wheat flakes, but there was no statistically significant difference between species on the same food when reared at 4 or 8°C in the laboratory.
5. At 16°C L. externus grew better than N. hostilis when fed wheat, but N. hostilis survived better on alder. Both species had higher survival and growth rates per day-degree at 8 and 4 than at 16°C.
6. Thus, faster growth rates of L. externtus in the field appear to be due simply to higher temperatures during the larval growth period. Indeed, N. hostilis had a significantly higher growth rate per day-degree in a field experiment.
7. In food preference experiments, L. externus chose wheat first, moss second, alder third, and willow last; N. hostilis chose alder first, bur-reed second, moss third, and wheat last.
8. Protein content, leaf texture, microbial conditioning, and an interaction between larval behaviours selecting for food quality and case materials, are potential factors that influence'food preference'results.  相似文献

Scale and length/weight data from 2071 Llyn Tegid grayling and 1803 River Dee grayling were used for age and growth determinations. The time of scale annulus formation varied from autumn in some years to spring in other years. Seasonal changes in length, weight and the condition factor were described. The main growth period was from spring to autumn with very little growth occurring during the winter. Annual growth in length was back-calculated from scale measurements, and von Bertalanffy's model was fitted to the resulting length for age data. Comparisons were made between the specific growth rates and ultimate lengths ( Lx ) of Llyn Tegid and River Dee grayling, and between the growth of male and female grayling. Males grew faster than females after the onset of sexual maturity. Calculated lengths were converted to weights using a combined length/weight relationship for Llyn Tegid and River Dec grayling. Changes were evident in this relationship throughout the life of the fish.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. Twenty-three nests of the submissive ant Formica fusca L. were sampled in two adjacent territories of the dominant wood ant Formica polyctena Först. The nests were dug up at different distances from the wood-ant mounds. Distance is assumed to be inversely related to the extent of disturbance of F. fusca by F. polyctena.
2. Colony success of F. fusca was assayed by counting the numbers of workers (colony size), and worker and sexual offspring in a nest. For individual size, the head width and dry weight of fifty workers per nest were measured.
3. Colony size correlated positively with the numbers of worker and sexual offspring in one territory, but only with worker offspring in the other.
4. Distance from the wood-ant mound correlated positively with colony size and numbers of worker and female offspring in one territory. In the other territory distance correlated positively with number of females, but negatively with number of worker offspring. No significant correlations between distance and the size measurements were obtained.
5. Because of its nonaggressive behaviour F. fusca may nest fairly close to a wood-ant mound but is likely to show reduced abundances in terms of nest density and forager number, and, ultimately, lowered fitness.  相似文献

1. Selection of host plants for oviposition by females of three graminivorous sawfly species, Dolerus puncticollis C. G. Thomson, Dolerus picipes Klug. and Pachynematus clitellatus Lepeletier, was investigated experimentally using three grass species, Lolium perenne L., Festuca rubra L. and wheat, Triticum aestivum L. cv. Hunter.
2. Both species of Dolerus showed significant preferences for one grass over the other two, D. puncticollis preferring L. perenne and D. picipes selecting F. rubra. P. clitellatus females used L. perenne and F. rubra equally for oviposition, but avoided wheat.
3. The results correlated closely with larval performance trials, with D. puncticollis larvae having maximal survival and growth rates on L. perenne , and D. picipes larval performance being maximized on F. rubra. P. clitellatus larvae survived well on both grasses, but had a high level of mortality on wheat.
4. P. clitellatus larval growth rates were significantly higher on L. perenne than on F . rubra . Individual P. clitellatus adult females developing from larvae reared on L. perenne reached a significantly greater dry weight than those reared on F. rubra , but there was no significant difference in weight between males reared on the two hosts. There was some evidence that this disproportionate effect of host plant quality on the weight gain of the two sexes was translated into a bias in sex ratio of the eggs laid towards a greater proportion of females on L. perenne than on F. rubra . This manipulation of sex ratio would have a potential benefit for ovipositing females through disproportionate fecundity gains for female offspring.  相似文献

SUMMARY. 1. The midsummer succession of cladoceran zooplankton in Lake Texoma was examined by demographic characterization of lake populations and a parallel set of life table experiments in which the dominant cladoceran species were raised on naturally occurring lake phytoplankton at lake temperatures. Diaphanosoma leuchtenbergianum occurred throughout the study period (mid June-mid August 1981) but Daphnia parvula, D. galeata mendotae and Ceriodaphnia lacustris were rarely detected after 15 July.
2. Analyses of size structure and size-specific fecundity of the cladoceran populations showed that (1) size structure shifted to smaller individuals in mid July, (2) size-specific fecundity was relatively constant in the smaller size classes and was constant or declined in larger females of each species, and (3) size at maturation did not vary significantly during the study of any population.
3. Individual growth rates of the two Daphnia species and Ceriodaphnia in the life table experiments were significantly lower in mid July when populations were declining and when size structure of each population was more dominated by smaller Individuals. The reduction in individual growth rates was short-lived in the life table experiments; growth rates returned to pre-decline levels by the end of July.
4. Two effects of temporary reductions in individual growth rates when size-specific fecundity and size at maturation are constant are (1) that size structure is temporarily shifted to smaller individuals, and (2) the potential rate of population growth is reduced because of delays in reproduction. Because data on size structure and size-specific fecundity are commonly used to evaluate the relative effects of predators and resource changes on populations it is noteworthy that erroneous conclusions about the mechanism of population decline may be reached when individual growth rates vary.  相似文献

A combined study of Alborán Sea Sardina pilchardus larval daily growth and isotopic signature was carried out to elucidate the cause of morphometric differences observed in a single larval school whereby the standard length (L(S)) v. dry mass (M(D)) relationship differentiated a heavier-by-size larval group from a lighter larval group. The daily growth analysis revealed that this difference originated from two larval growth patterns, where a fast growing population (F) in contrast to a slow-growing larval population (S) was distinguished. The S-growing larval cohort had a significantly higher nitrogen (N) content as a result of greater somatic mass build up with time in the form of structural proteins. Alternatively, the F-growing population showed a significantly greater amount of carbon (C) content with age, indicating faster metabolic rates of C accretion compared to the S-growing group. In consequence, the C:N ratios of the F-growing larvae were significantly higher than the S-group. C:N ratios of both larval populations showed significant linear decrease with age (and size), while K showed an inverse relationship. The stable isotopes of N did not show significant differences between the S and F-growing larvae. In F-growing larvae, however, a significant linear increase in δ(15)N (by age class) was observed, indicating that as larvae undergo ontogenetic development, trophic level tends to increase. This was also made evident by the significant decrease in age of δ(15)N coefficients of variation (by age class). The higher δ(13)C values in the S-growing larvae were related to the lower growth rates observed in this group. These results suggest a broader trophic flexibility in younger larvae, but moving towards a trophic specialization and more selective diets with age. This trophic specialization shows a tendency of a greater prey size with age. These findings suggest that S-growing larvae have a more omnivorous diet than the F-growing ones.  相似文献

To aid the interpretation of otolith microstructure in wild fishes, the present study assessed responses in daily otolith increment widths of early juvenile Australian smelt Retropinna semoni to sudden changes in feeding conditions. There was an almost immediate response in otolith increment widths (which can be interpreted as growth in length) to sudden changes in feeding conditions, with such changes being detected statistically after c. 4 days. Fish displayed compensatory growth when food supplies were increased following a period of limited food, indicating the magnitude of the response in growth appears highly dependant on feeding history. Additionally, fish size also appeared to influence increment widths suggesting that both fish size and feeding history are important factors that must be considered when interpreting otolith microstructure for the species.  相似文献

Transverse sections of otoliths from Atlantic cod Gadus morhua from the Baltic Sea revealed narrow growth increments. The widths of these increments corresponded to daily increments from fish with known otolith growth rates and were therefore assumed to be daily increments. They exhibited a distinct pattern with increasing distance from the primary primordium. A series of zones with clearly distinguishable increments, first with increasing then with decreasing widths in a dome‐shaped pattern, were separated by zones where no regular increment structure was visible. Increment width seemed to be tightly coupled to the annual cycle in environmental temperature at a depth of 30–60 m, where G. morhua predominantly reside. Between 135 and 200 increments occurred within the different zones, with a non‐significant trend towards lower increment numbers and widths with distance from the primary primordium of the otolith. Increment formation apparently ceased at temperatures < 5–6° C, but growth during the cold months corresponded closely with estimated growth rates. The increment patterns seemed to reflect annual cycles in environmental temperature, and the count of the increment cycles may thus be a promising tool for the determination of the true age of Baltic G. morhua.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. Observations were made on the biology of Anthocoris gallarumulmi De Geer (Hemiptera - Heteroptera: Anthocoridae) in West Central Scotland from 1973 until 1975. The life cycle was intimately linked with those of its principal prey species Schizoneura ulmi and S.patchae , leaf roll-gall aphids, and elm, their primary host ( Ulmus sp.).
2. Overwintered adults emerged in late April/May and could be found on a number of early flowering tree species, before congregating on elm in late May/June. This population was univoltine and exhibited obligatory female reproductive diapause.
3. Overwintered females emerged already mated but the subsequent pre-oviposition period was 25 days and oviposition period 27 days. Ova were deposited only in close association with galls of S.ulmi and Spatchae , and behavioural variations were shown between sites. Fecundity was c . 16 ova per female.
4. The incubation period was c . 8 days with the subsequent period of larval development 38–53 days, during which time the diet was almost exclusively either S.ulmi or S.patchae . Intergall migration was characteristic of post second instar larvae, which resulted in the concentration of fifth instar larvae and adults in a limited number of galls. It was during this period of local high population density that mating occurred.
5. Adults left elm within 14 days of imaginal ecdysis and thereafter, until overwintering, were recorded in only very low numbers from a range of tree, shrub and herb species.
6. Overwintering adults selected as hibernacula the bark of four tree species but principally Acer pseudoplatanus and Quercus robor . Females required a period of at least 75 days of cold 'shock' to terminate reproductive diapause.
7. Mortality among males surviving to spring emergence was 67%.  相似文献
