The distribution pattern of neuropeptide Y-like immunoreactivity (NPY-Li) in cat hypothalamus was studied using avidin-biotin modification of immunocytochemical method. This study showed cell bodies containing NPY-Li in the periventricular and the infundibular nuclei and also a moderate number of neurons with NPY-Li in the ventromedial nucleus, an observation not reported in earlier studies. Fibers with NPY-Li were noted throughout the hypothalamus, but most prominently within the periventricular regions. The location of NPY cells within the hypothalamus suggests the possibility of an interaction with dopaminergic and other proopiomelanocortinergic neurons.  相似文献

In the ewe, the mediobasal hypothalamus (MBH) is the primary central site for estradiol to generate the preovulatory GnRH/LH surges and sexual behavior. This area contains numerous neurons expressing the estradiol receptor alpha, distributed in the ventromedial nucleus (VMN) and the infundibular nucleus (IN). A large proportion of these neurons express somatostatin, making this neuropeptide a potential candidate for transmission of the estradiol signal to the GnRH neurons located in the preoptic area. We tested this hypothesis using ovariectomized ewes that had been subjected to an artificial estrous cycle. In the first experiment, 22 h after progesterone removal, ewes received estradiol (treated ewes) or empty implants (control ewes) for 4 h and then were killed. Using in situ hybridization, we showed that this short estradiol treatment increased the somatostatin mRNA amount by about 50% in the VMN and 42% in the IN. In the second experiment, preovulatory estradiol signal was replaced by somatostatin intracerebroventricular (ICV) administration. This treatment abolished LH pulsatility and dramatically decreased the mean basal level of LH secretion while it did not affect the mean plasma GH concentration. We demonstrated that an increase in somatostatin mRNA occurs at the time of the negative feedback effect of estradiol on LH secretion during the early stage of the GnRH surge induction. As ICV somatostatin administration inhibits the pulsatile LH secretion by acting on the central nervous system, we suggest that somatostatin synthesized in the MBH could be involved in the estradiol negative feedback before the onset of the preovulatory surge.  相似文献

It has been postulated that stress induces discorrelations of the hypothalamo-pituitary and pituitary gonadal axis. In our experiments on the effect of stress on the reproductive physiology in rats and sheep we applied mild electrical footshocking of short or prolonged duration. Foot-shocking applied with some breaks during 9 h within one a day (15th day of the oestrous cycle) induced in ewes acceleration of the release of LH. Prolonged footshocking applied with some breaks during 3 days in cycling sheep caused disturbances in the circadian rhythm of the cortisol secretion, disturbances in the release of LH and led to the blockade of ovulation. Disturbances in the course of oestrous cycle occurred not only during the current cycle but also during two subsequent cycles. Rats exposed to relatively long-term stressful situation (24 h) during dioestrous displayed marked changes in the length of this phase in three subsequent post-stress oestrous cycles. To follow the neurohormonal background of the stress-induced disturbances in LH release and in the course of oestrous cycle in sheep the concentrations of beta-endorphin (beta-END) in the infundibular and paraventricular nuclei as well as in the pituitary gland under physiological and stress conditions were determined, while in rats the metabolism of brain serotonin was investigated. Footshocking in rats induced significant decrease in 5-HT concentrations in the fronto-parietal brain cortex, hippocampus, striatum, medial basal hypothalamus and the preoptic-anterior hypothalamic area. These results allow to suggest that the decline in brain 5-HT under stress conditions has some associations with the impairments in the course of oestrous cycle. Measurements of the beta-END in perfusates of medial basal hypothalamus (nucl. infundibularis) in sheep evidenced significant increase of this opioid under stress conditions and it was postulated that this increase might be the main cause of the stress-induced impairments in the course of oestrous cycle and inhibition of LH-release. In addition, it was found that beta-END suppressed the secretion of cortisol and attenuated some noxious consequences of general nature for organism.  相似文献

Summary In order to study the distribution of neuropeptide Y-like immunoreactivity in the human hypothalamus, an immunocytochemical localization of this peptide was performed. Using antibodies developed against synthetic porcine neuropeptide Y (NPY), we have been able to localize immunoreactivity in neuronal cell bodies located exclusively in the infundibular nucleus. Immunostained fibers were found in several regions in the hypothalamus with a high concentration in the periventricular areas. Fibers were also found in the neurovascular zone of the median eminence, the pituitary stalk and the posterior pituitary. These results suggest that immunoreactive material related to porcine NPY is present in the human hypothalamus, with a distribution similar to that observed in the rat.  相似文献

Efferent projections of the lateral septal nucleus (LS) to the preoptic area and the hypothalamus were identified in 20 female guinea pigs after iontophoretic injection of the anterograde axonal tracer Fluoro-Ruby. Tubero-infundibular (TI) neurons of the preoptic area and the hypothalamus were retrogradely labeled after intracardiac injection of Granular Blue or Fluoro-Gold. Magnocellular neurons of the supraoptic and paraventricular nuclei were also labeled. The double labeling procedure allowed an estimation of the extent of the direct relationship between LS efferents and TI neurons. Contacts between lateral septal fibers and TI cell bodies were mainly observed at the light-microscopical level in the preoptic area. A group of labeled fibers coursing along the third ventricle established sparse connections with hypothalamic periventricular TI neurons. A few appositions was observed in the infundibular (arcuate) nucleus, suggestive of a monosynaptic regulation of TI neurons by a septo-arcuate tract. Close association with labeled magnocellular neurons was also noted at the edge of the supraoptic and paraventricular nuclei. The sparse but direct connections between LS and TI neurons may be involved in the neuroendocrine functions of the LS.  相似文献

Blood samples were collected every 15 min for 6 h during the follicular (1 day before oestrus), and early (Days +1 to +3), mid- (Days +4 to +8), and full (Days +9 to +14) luteal phases of the oestrous cycle. Serum concentrations of immunoactive LH were measured by radioimmunoassay. The biological activity of serum LH was determined by an in-vitro bioassay that uses LH-induced testosterone production from mouse interstitial cells as an endpoint. Only ovine and bovine LH and hCG had appreciable activity in this bioassay. The temporal pattern of secretion of bioactive LH paralleled the secretory pattern of immunoactive LH at all stages of the ovine oestrous cycle. However, the secretory pattern itself varied regularly through the oestrous cycle. The frequency of secretory excursions of LH was highest during the follicular phase (6.2 +/- 0.9 pulses/6 h) and was progressively reduced through the luteal phase (1.1 +/- 0.1 pulses/6 h during full luteal phase). Conversely, amplitude of secretory excursions of immunoactive LH was low during the follicular phase (0.79 +/- 0.08 ng/ml) and significantly (P less than 0.05) increased during the mid- and full luteal phases (1.49 +/- 0.10 and 2.37 +/- 0.20 ng/ml, respectively).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The ontogeny of the somatostatin-containing neuron system was investigated by light-microscopic immunohistochemistry. During development, immunoreactive somatostatin-containing neurons arise from three discrete regions of the neuroepithelium of the third ventricle and show a chronological difference. The neurons are first evident within the third ventricle floor on day 12.5 of gestation; they move thereafter to the arcuate nucleus. The second generation occurs in the dorsal region of the arcuate nucleus during days 17.5-19.5; these neurons migrate sequentially into the arcuate-ventromedial nuclear region. The third generation is recognized in the neuroepithelial cell layer of the rostral hypothalamus on day 17.5 of gestation; these cells move to the periventricular area. This latter generation is most prominent during days 3-6 after birth, and some of the cells are seen sporadically even up to day 20. The first two generations give rise to the somatostatin neuron system in the arcuate-ventromedial nuclear region, while the latter gives rise to that in the rostral periventricular region in the adult rat hypothalamus.  相似文献

The localization of neuropeptide Y (NPY)-immunoreactive elements was investigated in the mesencephalon and rhombencephalon of carp, Cyprinus carpio, by using antisera raised against porcine NPY and the immunoperoxidase technique. Concurrently, to identify the distribution of NPY-immunoreactivity, we developed an atlas of the studied areas based on Nissl-stained sections. The NPY-immunoreactive (NPY-ir) elements were located in many zones of the mesencephalon and rhombencephalon. In the mesencephalon, positive fibers were the most abundant elements while neurons were scarce. The rhombencephalon rostral part was characterized by a low to moderate fiber density, distributed in the ventro-medial and ventro-lateral region. Differently the caudal part of the rhombencephalon exhibited several NPY-ir elements. In particular, a high density of immunoreactivity was located in the gustatory area at the level of the nucleus (n.) originis nervi glossopharyngei, in the n. nervi vagi, and in the vagal lobe. The latter can be considered a valid neuroanatomical model for the study of gustatory signal processing in vertebrates. Our results regarding the primary gustatory centers give neuroanatomical support to the view that NPY may act as a neurotransmitter and/or a neuromodulator in a wide neural network for feeding behavior control.  相似文献

Plasma progesterone concentrations were recorded during one breeding season in 19 lesser mouse lemur females living in different social conditions. The oestrous cycle length and the progesterone profile mainly depended on the social environment of the female. For totally isolated females, the oestrous cycle lasted 38 +/- 5.7 days and included a 25-30-days spontaneous luteal phase with a progesterone peak about 100 ng/ml between the 20th and 25th days after oestrus, and a prolonged preovulatory period of 10-15 days which could be considered equivalent to the follicular phase of a menstrual cycle. When females were able to communicate through olfactory, visual and auditory signals, the oestrous cycle was significantly lengthened (53.7 +/- 5.9 days). When females had tactile contacts, the oestrous cycle was further lengthened (62.7 +/- 0.8 days). This lengthening of the oestrous cycle was related to an extension of the luteal phase associated with a decrease in progesterone concentrations during this period. In females maintained with one male (paired) or with males and females (heterosexually grouped), large individual variations were shown in cycle lengths or in progesterone concentrations. In these females, cycle lengths and progesterone concentrations were inversely correlated to plasma cortisol concentrations.  相似文献

Neuropeptide Y (NYP) is a 36 amino acid peptide which shares considerable sequence homology with pancreatic polypeptide and peptide YY. NPY is widely distributed within neurons of the central and peripheral nervous systems, and occurs in mammalian brain in higher concentrations than all other peptides studied to date. Radioimmunoassay studies demonstrated high concentrations of NPY immunoreactivity within many regions of the hypothalamus and within the paraventricular thalamic nucleus, nucleus accumbens, the septum and medial amygdala. These findings correspond with the distribution of NPY containing terminals. Numerous cell bodies containing NPY are located within the cerebral cortex, caudate-putamen, hippocampus, hypothalamus, and nucleus tractus solitarius. Central administration of NPY causes a marked increase in ingestive behaviors, possibly related to the release of NPY from neurons in the arcuate nucleus that innervate the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus. NPY projections from the arcuate nucleus to the medial preoptic area may be related to the central effects of NPY on luteinizing hormone release and sexual behavior. NPY immunoreactive terminals heavily innervated neurons within the amygdala and hypothalamus that are connected to the dorsal vagal complex, suggesting a role of NPY in central autonomic regulation. NPY terminals form a dense plexus around cerebral vessels and are probably responsible for NPY's potent vasoconstrictor effects in the cerebral cortex. Coronary vessels are also innervated heavily by NPY terminals, indicating a role for NPY in the pathogenesis of coronary vasospasm. NPY is present in pheochromocytomas and circulating levels of NPY may prove useful in the diagnosis of pheochromocytoma. Thus, anatomical and physiological studies suggest a varied, but important, function for NPY in mammalian nervous system.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to characterize the immediate effects of heat stress on plasma FSH and inhibin concentrations, and its involvement in follicular dynamics during a complete oestrous cycle, and to examine a possible delayed effect of heat stress on follicular development. Holstein dairy cows were oestrous synchronized and randomly assigned to either cooled (n = 7) or heat-stressed (n = 6) treatment groups. During a complete oestrous cycle, control cows, which were cooled, maintained normothermia, whereas heat-stressed cows, which were exposed to direct solar radiation, developed hyperthermia. At the end of this oestrous cycle (treated cycle), both groups were cooled and maintained normothermia for the first 10 days of the subsequent oestrous cycle. Throughout this period, follicular development was examined by ultrasonography, and plasma samples were collected. During the second follicular wave of the treated oestrous cycle, a significantly larger cohort of medium sized follicles (6-9 mm) was found in heat-stressed cows than in cooled cows (P < 0.05). The enhanced growth of follicles in this wave in heat-stressed cows was associated with a higher plasma FSH increase which lasted 4 more days (days 8-13 of the oestrous cycle; P < 0.05), and coincided with a decrease in the plasma concentration of immunoreactive inhibin (days 5-18 of the oestrous cycle; P < 0.05). During the follicular phase (days 17-20 of the treated cycle), heat-stressed cows showed an increase in the number of large follicles (>/= 10 mm), and the preovulatory plasma FSH surge was significantly higher in heat-stressed cows than in cooled cows (P < 0.01). The effect of heat stress was also observed during the first follicular wave of the subsequent cycle: the postovulatory plasma FSH concentration was higher (P < 0.01), but fewer medium follicles developed, and the first follicular wave decreased at a slower rate in previously heat-stressed cows than in cooled cows (0.40 and 0.71 follicles per day, respectively). This study shows both immediate and delayed effects of heat stress on follicular dynamics, which were associated with high FSH and low inhibin concentrations in plasma. These alterations may have physiological significance that could be associated with low fertility of cattle during the summer and autumn.  相似文献

Animals living in temperate climates with predictable seasonal changes in food availability may use seasonal information to engage different metabolic strategies. Siberian hamsters decrease costs of thermoregulation during winter by reducing food intake and body mass in response to decreasing or short-day lengths (SD). These experiments examined whether SD reduction in food intake in hamsters is driven, at least in part, by altered behavioral responses to ghrelin, a gut-derived orexigenic peptide which induces food intake via NPY-dependent mechanisms. Relative to hamsters housed in long-day (LD) photoperiods, SD hamsters consumed less food in response to i.p. treatment with ghrelin across a range of doses from 0.03 to 3 mg/kg. To determine whether changes in photoperiod alter behavioral responses to ghrelin-induced activation of NPY neurons, c-Fos and NPY expression were quantified in the arcuate nucleus (ARC) via double-label fluorescent immunocytochemistry following i.p. treatment with 0.3 mg/kg ghrelin or saline. Ghrelin induced c-Fos immunoreactivity (-ir) in a greater proportion of NPY-ir neurons of LD relative to SD hamsters. In addition, following ghrelin treatment, a greater proportion of ARC c-Fos-ir neurons were identifiable as NPY-ir in LD relative to SD hamsters. Changes in day length markedly alter the behavioral response to ghrelin. The data also identify photoperiod-induced changes in the ability of ghrelin to activate ARC NPY neurons as a possible mechanism by which changes in day length alter food intake.  相似文献

Two experiments using Spanish Merino ewes were conducted to investigate whether the secretion of prolactin during the follicular phase of the sheep oestrous cycle was involved in the patterns of growth and regression of follicle populations. In both experiments, oestrus was synchronized with two cloprostenol injections which were administered 10 days apart. Concurrent with the second injection (time 0), ewes (n = 6 per group) received one of the following treatments every 12 h from time 0 to 72 h: group 1: vehicle injection (control); group 2: 0.6 mg bromocriptine (0.03 mg per kg per day); and group 3: 1.2 mg bromocriptine (0.06 mg per kg per day). In Expt 1, blood samples were collected every 3 h from 0 to 72 h, and also every 20 min from 38 to 54 h to measure prolactin, LH and FSH concentrations. In Expt 2, transrectal ultrasonography was carried out every 12 h from time 0 until oestrus, and blood samples were collected every 4 h to measure prolactin, LH and FSH concentrations. Ovulation rates were determined by laparoscopy on day 4 after oestrus. Bromocriptine markedly decreased prolactin secretion, but did not affect FSH concentrations, the mean time of the LH preovulatory surge or LH concentrations in the preovulatory surge. Both doses of bromocriptine caused a similar decrease in LH pulse frequency before the preovulatory surge. The highest bromocriptine dose led to a reduction (P < 0.01) in the number of 2-3 mm follicles detected in the ovaries at each time point. However, bromocriptine did not modify the total number or the number of newly detected 4-5 mm follicles at each time point, the number of follicles > 5 mm or the ovulation rate. In conclusion, the effects of bromocriptine on gonadotrophin and prolactin secretion and on the follicular dynamics during the follicular phase of the sheep oestrous cycle indicate that prolactin may influence the viability of gonadotrophin-responsive follicles shortly after luteolysis.  相似文献

Stress-like levels of cortisol suppress follicular growth and development and block or delay the preovulatory surge of LH when cortisol is continuously administered during the late luteal and early follicular phases of the ovine oestrous cycle. We postulated that cortisol infusion of shorter duration would have a similar effect. To test this hypothesis the oestrous cycles of mature ewes were synchronized using progestin-treated vaginal pessaries. Ewes were randomly assigned to one of four treatment groups. Animals received cortisol (0.1mg/kg/h; n=8) or vehicle alone (n=8) beginning 5 days before, and continuing for 5 days after, pessary removal (PR). Additional groups received cortisol only during the 5 days period before (n=7), or the 5 days period after (n=8), PR. Continuous delivery of cortisol established stable serum concentrations of cortisol of 72.0+/-2.5ng/ml within 6h of initiation of infusion. Serum concentrations of oestradiol increased progressively during the period after PR in control animals receiving vehicle alone and the preovulatory surge of LH was evident in all control animals (eight of eight) 55.5+/-5.0h after PR. In contrast, follicular development and the preovulatory surge of LH were evident during the period of cortisol infusion in only one of eight animals receiving stress-like levels of cortisol over the entire 10-day infusion period. Similarly, neither follicular development nor surge-like secretion of LH were evident during the infusion period in animals (zero of eight) receiving cortisol during the 5-day period after PR. This cortisol-dependent suppression of ovarian activity in sheep receiving stress-like levels of cortisol during the 5 days after PR was temporary and follicular development, the ovulatory surge of LH, and subsequent luteal function were evident in six of eight ewes after cessation of cortisol delivery. Similarly, follicular development and the preovulatory surge of LH were noted within 5 days after PR in four of seven ewes receiving cortisol only during the 5-day period prior to PR. Collectively, these data indicate that stress-like levels of cortisol reduce fertility of sheep by suppressing follicular development and the preovulatory surge of LH. Additionally, cortisol delivery during the follicular phase has a more profound suppressive effect on follicular development than cortisol administration during the luteal phase.  相似文献

Stimulation of appetite and regulation of reproductive hormone secretion are two well-known physiological effects of neuropeptide Y (NPY) that have been affirmed using the antisense oligodeoxynucleotide (ODN) approach. Because NPY-producing neurons are concentrated in a narrow band in the arcuate nucleus of the hypothalamus, ODNs injected intracerebroventricularly have easy access to them. In an early study intracerebroventricular administration of an unmodified phosphodiester ODN sequence blocked de novo NPY synthesis and prevented the preovulatory surge release of gonadotropins. Microinjection directly into the arcuate nucleus attenuated NPY-related feeding, however, to unequivocally block the effects of NPY on feeding behavior, long-term inhibition of NPY gene expression was required. This was achieved using phosphorothioated ODNs that, unlike the phosphodiester sequences, are not subject to rapid degradation in vivo. Central administration of these modified ODNs elicited toxic effects that were circumvented by end-capping the sequences. Similar end-capped phosphorothioated ODN sequences have been used to identify the NPY receptor subtypes involved in stimulation of feeding.  相似文献

Phenylpropanolamine (PPA) is an appetite suppressant. The mechanism for the anorectic effect of PPA has been attributed to its action on the site of hypothalamic paraventriculum. Neuropeptide Y (NPY) is an appetite stimulant that is widely distributed in the site of hypothalamus. It is not clear whether hypothalamic NPY is involved in the anorectic action of PPA. This study was aimed to investigate the mechanism underlying the involvement of NPY gene in the anorectic action of PPA. Results revealed that PPA treatment in rats could decrease both NPY content and mRNA level in the hypothalamus. In addition, the expression of NPY immunoreactivity following PPA treatment was decreased in areas of hypothalamic arcuate nucleus, paraventricular nucleus and periventricular area using immunohistochemical staining, suggesting an involvement of NPYergic pathway in the action of PPA anorexia. Our results provided immunohistochemical and genomic evidence to suggest that PPA might reduce feeding by altering NPY gene expression.  相似文献

The distribution of delta sleep-inducing peptide immunoreactive cell bodies, fibers, and terminal-like structures was investigated in the normal human hypothalamus during the first postnatal year, using immunohistofluorescence and peroxidase anti-peroxidase techniques. Immunolabeled perikarya were relatively few and were mostly scattered through the anterior (preoptic) and mediobasal regions (infundibular nucleus) of the hypothalamus. DSIP-immunoreactive fibers and terminal-like fibers were observed throughout the entire rostrocaudal extent of the hypothalamus. They exhibit high densities in the preoptic region, the organum vasculosum of lamina terminalis, infundibular nucleus and median eminence. Moderate to low densities of DSIP-immunoreactive fibers were observed in the other hypothalamic structures, located in the anterior and mediobasal regions of hypothalamus, such as periventricular, paraventricular, suprachiasmatic, ventromedial, dorsomedial and parafornical nuclei. In the present study, the analysis of the immunohistochemical pattern of DSIP-immunoreactive neuronal elements in the human infant hypothalamus during the first postnatal year provided evidence of the presence of several differences. We have found qualitative age-related changes in the density of DSIP immunoreactivity in several hypothalamic structures such as the anterior region and the median eminence.  相似文献

Administration of charcoal-treated bovine follicular fluid to Damline ewes twice daily (i.v.) from Days 1 to 11 of the luteal phase (Day 0 = oestrus) resulted in a delay in the onset of oestrous behaviour and a significant increase in ovulation rate following cloprostenol-induced luteolysis on Day 12. During follicular fluid treatment plasma levels of FSH in samples withdrawn just before injection of follicular fluid at 09:00 h (i.e. 16 h after previous injection of follicular fluid) were initially suppressed, but by Day 8 of treatment had returned to those of controls. However, the injection of follicular fluid at 09:00 h on Day 8 still caused a significant suppression of FSH as measured during a 6-h sampling period. Basal LH levels were higher throughout treatment due to a significant increase in amplitude and frequency of pulsatile secretion. After cloprostenol-induced luteal regression at the end of treatment on Day 12, plasma levels of FSH increased 4-fold over those of controls and remained higher until the preovulatory LH surge. While LH concentrations were initially higher relative to those of controls, there was no significant difference in the amount of LH released immediately before or during the preovulatory surge. These results suggest that the increase in ovulation rate observed during treatment with bovine follicular fluid is associated with the change in the pattern of gonadotrophin secretion in the luteal and follicular phases of the cycle.  相似文献

The melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH) is a neuropeptide synthesized by neurons of the lateral hypothalamus and incerto-hypothalamic area that project throughout the central nervous system. The aims of the present report were: (1) to determine if MCH levels in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of ewes vary between the mid-luteal and the oestrous phase of spontaneous oestrous cycles; and (2) to study if MCH levels in CSF of ewes vary acutely during the follicular phase induced with the ram effect in anoestrous ewes. In the first experiment, CSF was collected from 8 adult ewes during spontaneous oestrous and during the mid-luteal phase (8-10 days after natural oestrus). In the second experiment, performed during the mid non-breeding season, a follicular phase was induced with the ram effect. After isolating a group of 16 ewes from rams, CSF was obtained from 5 of such ewes (control group). Three rams were joined with the ewes, and samples were obtained 12h (n=6) and 24h (n=5) later. In Experiment 1, there were no differences in MCH concentrations in CSF measured during the mid-luteal phase and spontaneous oestrus (0.14 ± 0.04 vs. 0.16 ± 0.05 ng/mL respectively). In Experiment 2, MCH concentrations tended to increase 12h after rams introduction (0.15 ± 0.08 vs. 0.35 ± 0.21 ng/mL, P=0.08), and increased significantly 24h after rams introduction (0.37 ± 0.15 ng/mL, P=0.02). We concluded that MCH concentration measured in the CSF from ewes increased markedly during the response to the ram effect but not during the natural oestrous cycle of ewes.  相似文献

Immunocytochemical methods were used to compare the localization of somatostatin (SRIF) in the human and rhesus monkey hypothalamus. The distribution of SRIF-containing cell bodies and fibers is similar in the two species. Perikarya are located predominantly in the periventricular region and to a lesser extent in the ventromedial nucleus. Fibers occur in dense clusters within the periventricular region, ventromedial nucleus, arcuate nucleus, median eminence, and pericommissural area of both species. Analysis of serial sections suggests that fibers originate from cells in the periventricular region, extend ventrally through the ventromedial and arcuate nuclei to terminate around the portal vessels of the infundibular stalk, and thereby participate in the regulation of anterior pituitary function. Somatostatinergic fibers are also found surrounding non-immunoreactive perikarya in the ventromedial nucleus and periventricular region of both primates. This arrangement may support somatostatin's postulated role as a neurotransmitter or neuromodulator. The strong similarity between the localization of hypothalamic SRIF in the human and rhesus monkey supports the use of the rhesus monkey as a model for the study of somatostatin as a neuroendocrine regulatory in the human.  相似文献
