We investigated the effect of flowering time, display size, and local floral density on fruit set in Tolumnia variegata, a pollination-limited orchid that offers no reward to its pollinator(s). During 1990, natural variation in flowering time, display size, and fruit set were monitored in 508 plants at one locality in Puerto Rico. The following season, orchid floral abundance per host tree (Randia aculeata) was manipulated to investigate its effect on fruit set. Four floral abundance treatments were established (700, 500, 300, and 100), each replicated four times. Flowering time was the most important trait affecting fruit set. The proportion of plants setting at least one fruit was significantly high early and late in the season, but low during the flowering peak. Thus, strong disruptive selection differential on flowering phenology was found. Display size had little effect on fruit set. A weak, but significant disruptive selection differential on display size was found. Orchid floral abundance per host tree had a significant effect on fruit set. Early in the season, T. variegata flowers with intermediate number of conspecific flowers exhibited a greater probability of setting fruit than those in host trees with fewer or more flowers. Our results show that flowering phenology may be evolutionarily unstable, possibly a consequence of the deception pollination system. Furthermore, a deception strategy would be relatively unsuccessful in populations where plants are found in either very dense or sparse patches.  相似文献

The geographic range of many temperate plant species is constrained by climate, but it remains little known how climate affects population performance at low-latitude range margins. This study investigated the reproduction of the Eurasian tree Frangula alnus in relict populations near its southwestern range limit in southern Spain. The aim was to identify the principal stages and causes of ovule loss experienced by these marginal populations. More than 6,800 flowers were monitored over 2 years, insect observations and different experiments were carried out to assess levels of pollen and resource limitation, as well as the influence of flowering phenology on seed production. Most ovule losses occurred during flower anthesis and were due to strong cross-pollen limitation. Fruit set was affected by tree size, light regime and flowering phenology, probably through their effects on pollinator behaviour. Fruit set was almost zero throughout the first half of the flowering season. Then it increased paralleling changes in pollinator abundance but was soon overridden by increasing ovule desiccation due to summer drought. Successful seed production was mostly confined to a brief period near the end of the flowering season. Adverse weather during this period in the second study year resulted in a threefold bud and flower mortality and a 50% decrease of fruit production. Spring rainfalls in southwestern Spain have diminished more than 30% through past decades leading to an earlier onset of summer drought. This trend and its adverse effects on seed production may contribute to explaining the recent decline of F. alnus at its southwestern range limit.Electronic Supplementary Material Supplementary material is available in the online version of this article at  相似文献

Flower size and number usually evolve under pollinator‐mediated selection. However, hot, dry environments can also modulate display, counteracting pollinator attraction. Increased pollen deposition on larger flower displays may not involve higher female fitness. Consequently, stressful conditions may constrain flower size, favouring smaller‐sized flowers. The large‐flowered, self‐incompatible Mediterranean shrub Cistus ladanifer was used to test that: (1) this species suffers pollen limitation; (2) pollinators are spatially–temporally variable and differentially visit plants with more/larger flowers; (3) increased visits enhance reproduction under pollen limitation; (4) stressful conditions reduce female fitness of larger displays; and (5) phenotypic selection on floral display is not just pollinator‐mediated. We evaluated pollen limitation, related floral display to pollinator visits and fruit and seed production and estimated phenotypic selection. Flower size was 7.2–10.5 cm and varied spatially–temporally. Visitation rates (total visits/50 min) ranged from 0.26 to 0.43 and increased with flower size. Fruit set averaged 80% and seed number averaged 855, but only fruit set varied between populations and years. Selection towards larger flowers was detected under conditions of pollen limitation. Otherwise, we detected stabilizing selection on flower size and negative selection on flower number. Abstract 1 Coconut is one of the most important tropical crops. It is threatened by Lethal yellowing disease. Production and selection by breeding require pollination, yet little is known of the pollination requirements and breeding system of this palm. 2 This study was carried out from 1999 to 2001 in coconut plantations represented by five coconut ecotypes commonly found in Mexico. It is the first study in the Neotropics on pollination and the breeding system of this palm. 3 Hymenoptera were the most numerous and diverse visitors to coconut flowers. The greatest period of insect abundance occurred during the rainy season (July to October). Insect abundance on the flowers correlated highly and positively with precipitation. 4 The abundance of visitors to pistillate flowers did not vary with season but there were significant differences between palm ecotypes; the most insect‐visited flowers were of the Atlantic Tall ecotype. 5 The introduced honeybee (Apis mellifera) had the most appropriate foraging behaviour, visiting both pistillate and staminate flowers. These insects were probably the most efficient pollinators as they carry pollen on their ventral surface. Ants were present on flowers day and night but had no effect on pollination. 6 Pollination experiments indicated a mixed mating strategy: self‐pollination by geitenogamy produced almost 19% of the fruit set, but cross‐pollination (xenogamy) was the most important contribution (c. 30%). Anemophilous cross‐pollination only accounted for 10% of fruit set, whereas entomophily became the most important pollination mechanism under Yucatan conditions. 7 As coconut palm grows naturally on the oceanic strand in a wide variety of seasonal conditions of wind and rain, we suggest that they may have evolved pollination, breeding and mating systems that ensure fruit production under a wide variety of conditions, while maximizing the probability of cross‐pollination.  相似文献

Hypothetically, a species with both cleistogamous (CL) flowers and delayed selfing chasmogamous (CH) flowers should display high levels of reproductive assurance because, over time, obligate selfing by CL flowers should reduce inbreeding depression and delayed selfing in CH flowers should compensate for the absence of outcross pollen. We used pollinator-exclusion experiments to investigate reproductive assurance in the CH flowers of Polygala lewtonii, an herb with a mixed mating system. We followed CH flowers from bud-break to flower/fruit abscission to quantify fruit initiation and maturation and rates of floral development. We also evaluated the efficacy of the selfing mechanism, conducted pollinator watches to assess the likelihood of pollinator limitation, and performed regression analysis to determine the effect of flower position on fruit production. Pollinator exclusion significantly reduced fruit initiation and maturation. Investigation of floral development demonstrated that the selfing mechanism is largely dysfunctional in CH flowers, indicating the failure of reproductive assurance. Low observed rates of insect visitation appear to contradict high rates of CH fruit production in open-pollinated plants, particularly given the rarity of delayed selfing. In both treatments, flower position significantly affected fruit initiation, suggesting a role for resource limitation in both pollinator-excluded and open-pollinated flowers.  相似文献

Assessing the relative contributions to seed production made by different types of floral visitors is fundamental to understanding the evolution of floral morphology and the influence that particular pollinator taxa have on plant fitness and reproduction. This 3-year study examined the pollinator activity and the seed production in three populations of Lepidium papilliferum, a threatened mustard endemic to sagebrush-steppe habitat in southwest Idaho. Relative amounts of time visitor taxa spent foraging on flowers, visitation rates (number of flowers visited per unit time during a foraging bout), and pollination effectiveness (fruit set per single visit to a virgin flower) were recorded for each of 12 insect taxa that visited L. papilliferum flowers. Relative contributions to seed production were calculated as the product of relative interaction frequencies (the relative number of flowers visited by each taxon—the “quantity” component of pollination) and pollination effectiveness (fruit set per single visit to a virgin flower—the “quality” component of pollination). Despite the superiority of some insect taxa in terms of pollination effectiveness, estimates of relative pollinator contributions to seed production were influenced primarily by an insect taxon’s interaction frequency with flowers. Pollinator assemblages varied widely both spatially and temporally, which suggest that L. papilliferum is not under strong selective pressure to shift from its generalist pollination strategy toward greater specialization. For this threatened plant, reliance on a diverse assemblage of insect pollinators may serve as an important buffer against disruption in reproductive success caused by fluctuations in population sizes of individual pollinator taxa.  相似文献

Insect pollination plays a vital role for the yield of many crops, such as apples, strawberries and coffee, which are economically significant commodities on the global market. Yet, knowledge about the role of insect pollination is lacking for many cash crops that support the livelihoods of small-scale farmers in developing countries.To assess if yields of watermelon are pollen limited, we conducted a supplemental hand-pollinated experiment (using a pollen mixture of cross and self-pollen) in 13 small-scale farms in an agricultural landscape in the Kilimanjaro and Arusha regions in northern Tanzania. We assessed fruit set, fruit abortion and weight of the mature fruits stemming from hand pollinated and control flowers. To check if differences in yield responses between hand-pollinated and control treatments depended on resource availability, we also accounted for local soil conditions.We found that hand pollination (i) increased the probability of fruit initiation by 30%, (ii) reduced the probability of fruit abortion by 13%, (iii) increased the probability of flowers developing into mature fruits by 42% and (iv) increased average fruit weight by 1.3 kg (±0.15 SE). Our results indicate that our system is pollen limited, due to insufficient visitor frequency and/or inefficient pollinator species.Fruit initiation and fruit weight were positively related to soil carbon, irrespective of treatment. The influence of soil moisture was not consistent across the measured responses, and differed between hand-pollinated and the control treatments.We suggest that farmers in our focal area should focus on improving the quality of the landscape to sustain and enhance healthy pollinator communities ultimately improving yields. We also suggest that farmers should continue current practices with respect to fertilization. The role of soil moisture on fruit initiation and maturation should be investigated to ensure that the positive effects of pollen is not hindered by soil moisture conditions.  相似文献

The production of both potentially outcrossed (chasmogamous) and obligately self-fertilized (cleistogamous) flowers presents a clear exception to the prediction that the only evolutionarily stable mating systems are complete selfing and complete outcrossing. Although cleistogamy has evolved repeatedly, the reason for its stability is not known for any species. We tested the hypothesis that the production of cleistogamous and chasmogamous flowers by a perennial violet constitutes adaptive phenotypic plasticity. We manipulated the season of flowering for each flower type and determined fruit set and the germination percentage of seeds produced by cleistogamous and chasmogamous flowers to test the hypothesis that adaptive plastic response to seasonal environmental variation makes mixed mating stable. Cleistogamous flowers had greater fruit set in all seasons and produced seeds with germination percentages as great as or greater than those from chasmogamous flowers. The consistent advantage of cleistogamous flowers is clearly not consistent with a role of adaptive plastic response to seasonal variation. The biomass cost of seed production by chasmogamous flowers was nearly three times that for cleistogamous flowers. Explaining why chasmogamous flower have not been eliminated by natural selection requires that this difference be balanced by an advantage to chasmogamous flowers that has not yet been identified.  相似文献

Deceptive orchid species that offer no floral rewards to pollinators often experience pollinator limitation because they. The breeding system and fruit set were investigated in order to examine pollinator limitation for a population of a deceptive orchid, Pogonia japonica , on a floating peat mat in Mizorogaike Pond, western Japan. Fruit sets for outcross-pollinated, self-pollinated and pollinator-excluded flowers were 75%, 80%, and 0%, respectively. Thus, this species was self-compatible but neither autogamous nor apogamous. The fruit set for open-pollinated flowers was 22.9% and 17.4% in 1994 and 1995, suggesting that pollinator limitation did occur in the field. Larger flowers were more likely to develop into fruit than smaller ones in open pollination (36% vs 8%). Thus, flower size seems to affect fruiting of this species. No effective visits by major pollinators such as bees, which could carry pollinia, were observed during 16.5 h of observation during daytime. Instead, thrips were often found moving on gynostemium or pollinia and circumstantial evidence that suggests thrips may partly transfer pollen in pieces out of a granular pollinium of P. japonica was obtained. Pogonia japonica should come to use thrips as a pollinator to supplement low fruit set under limited flower visitation by major pollinators.  相似文献

Summary Relationships between pollen loads, resource availability, and fruit and seed production were determined for Lysimachia quadrifolia ramets in two adjacent sites (the scrub site and the open site) in 1982, 1983, and 1984. Pollen loads limited % fruit set and seed production in the open site in 1982 and 1983. Reproduction in the scrub site was resource limited in 1982, as shown by an increase in % fruit set when one-half of the flowers on a ramet were removed prior to fruit initiation. In the scrub site in 1983, pollination of one-half of the flowers on a ramet decreased the % fruit set of the remaining, unpollinated flowers. Fruit production in the same site was limited by pollen in 1984. Addition of nitrogen fertilizer to the scrub site in 1984 had no effect on fruit and seed production. There was more variation in fruit set between sites than between years. There was no trend to greater fruit set or number of seeds/fruit on early flowers compared to late flowers on the same ramet. Correlations between measures of reproduction were positive or insignificant. These results demonstrate year-and site-specific variation in the factors that limit plant reproduction.  相似文献

Pollination biology studies of the endangered orchid Cypripedium japonicum were conducted in its natural habitat using pollinator observation and hand‐pollination experiments. The observed fruit set was as follows: artificial outcross‐pollinated, 100%; artificial self‐pollinated, 100%; pollinator‐excluded, 0%; and emasculated flowers, 0%. These results show that this species, although self‐compatible, is neither autogamous nor agamospermous. The fruit set for open‐pollinated flowers was 14.9%, which suggests that the study population was subject to pollinator limitation. The nectarless flowers of C. japonicum were exclusively visited and pollinated by the queens of two bumblebee species (Bombus ardens and B. diversus diversus). It is probable that the nectarless flowers of C. japonicum attract pollinators through a generalized food deceptive system.  相似文献

This study presents data on the reproductive characteristics of Nerium oleander, an evergreen, sclerophyllous shrub inhabiting the banks of temporary streams in all countries around the Mediterranean seaboard. Two southern Spanish populations (El Garrobo and Grazalema) were selected to investigate flowering, dispersal and seed germination phenologies, together with morphological and functional traits of flowers, fruits and seeds. Observations on pollinator visitation, fruit set, and seedling survival were also carried out. Plants produce massive flower displays of showy, tubular flowers void of nectar that rely on insect cheating for pollination. Hand-pollinations and seed germination tests demonstrated full self-compatibility. Automatic selfing is prevented by spatial separation of stigma and anthers, and pollinators are thus necessary for reproduction. Low pollinator visitation rates are the rule, as indicated by the fact that observations spread over 2 years yielded only eight insect records. Percentage fruit set of open-pollinated flowers was found to be extremely low (0.1–4.9%), while hand-pollination increased fruiting levels to 34–50%. Direct and indirect evidence point to consistently pollen-limited reproduction in this species. If a large number of flowers within any inflorescence are pollinated artificially, however, resource limitations operate and pods from ovaries pollinated late in the season are aborted. On average, the maximum of ovaries developing into fruit within any inflorescence is 4. It is suggested that, in this nectarless species, about 80% of total are ‘excess’ flowers which contribute to increase pollinator attraction. Nerium oleander pollen is aggregated into a sticky substance, which allows the fertilization of many ovules after a single, probably rare, pollination event. Fruits are many seeded follicles (181 seeds per fruit on average), so that individual plants often liberate thousands of seeds in spite of the low percent fruit set. The hairy, water-dispersed seeds are released during the rainiest season in the year, and germination follows rapidly. All seedlings tracked died before completing 1 year of life, mostly because of desiccation during the first summer drought. Pollination by deceit in this Mediterranean species is discussed in terms of phylogenetic constraints within the mainly tropical family Apocynaceae.  相似文献

Glycine argyrea (Fabaceae), a perennial wild relative of soybean, has a dual flowering strategy of both self-fertilized cleistogamous flowers and chasmogamous flowers on the same plant. Using allozyme polymorphisms the frequency and pattern of outcrossing was determined. The genotypes of seeds from each of several fruit (legumes) per plant were analysed by starch gel electrophoresis, and the maternal genotype inferred. The maximum likelihood estimates of outcrossing rate for the chasmogamous flowers averaged 0.38. The observed level of heterozygosity in the adult population (h = 0.25) compared with the level expected under random mating (h = 0.32) indicated that partial outcrossing was typical of this population. To analyse the mating pattern further, the pollen genotypes of several seeds per legume for pairs of legumes from the same plant were determined. About 35% of fruit from chasmogamous flowers had no genetically detectable outcross progeny, presumably because they were not cross-pollinated effectively. The majority of the remaining fruit had seed which were of mixed origin (both self-fertilized and outcrossed), suggesting that insect pollination does not preclude self-fertilization. As might be expected from this entomophilous pollination system, the pollen of outcrossed seed within one fruit usually (85% of cross-pollinated legumes) came from one male source. Evidence of pollen carry-over was found in the other legumes. The joint distribution of male sources among the pairs of legumes (paired fruit analysis) showed that non-self sources were shared in 30% of pairs. The probability that two outcrossed seeds from the same fruit would be half-sibs was estimated as 0.15, and for two seeds from different fruit on the same plant as 0.42. There is a hierarchy of genetic identity within and among legumes on the same plant, and on different plants, providing scope for the operation of selection at different levels.  相似文献

We assessed natural rates of floral abortion in four common mangrove species from northern Australia and subsequently manipulated pollination experimentally. Sonneratia alba J. Smith exhibited the highest rate of fruit set of the four species (23%), indicating this mangrove was best able to utilise the natural pollination opportunities provided. Fruit set in S. alba appeared, however, to be pollinator limited, as large increases in fruit set occurred after manual cross-pollination of flowers. Avicennia marina (Forsk.) Vierh. had the highest rate of natural pollination, but fruit set was lower (15%) and appeared to be impeded by resource limitations. Although a range of insects visited Ceriops australis (C.T. White) Ballment, T.J. Sm & Stoddart, the rate of fruit set was low (3%) and the capacity for flower fertilisation limited, despite evidence of autogamy in this species. There was an indication of both resource and pollinator limitation in C. australis. Rhizophora stylosa Griff. exhibited limited fruit set (0.5%), possibly due to limiting maternal resources and the lack of adaptation of flowers to either animal or wind pollination. Large increases in fruit set were recorded after manual cross-pollination of R. stylosa flowers. R. stylosa and C. australis, characterised by resource rich propagules with long periods of development, both aborted a large proportion of propagules during the fruit maturation process.  相似文献

Most orchids studied thus far show long‐term resource adjustments to increases in fruit production within a flowering season, but none of these offers rewards to their potential pollinators. If nectar production is energetically expensive, then resources utilized to produce fruits and seeds may be even more limited in pollinator‐rewarding orchids than in non‐rewarding ones. Thus, resource adjustments may be more dramatic or entirely different in nectar producing plants. In this study, we performed artificial hand‐pollinations for two consecutive flowering seasons in die nectar producing orchid Comparettia falcata, and tested whether or not fruit set, seed set, and seed viability were limited by the quantity of pollinations or by resources. In addition, we compared mechanisms of short‐term (fruit abortion within seasons) and long‐term consequences (percent change in leaf length and change in flower number per plant between seasons, probability of shoot and inflorescence production, and mortality) between hand‐ pollinated and unmanipulated plants. The relationships among plant traits related to vegetative size and reproduction also were examined. Hand‐pollinations showed some negative effects. Fruit set was higher in hand‐pollinated plants in the first season but was similar to the controls in the second. Seed set was significantly lower and abortions were higher than in unmanipulated plants. On the other hand, some of our measurements were unaffected by die hand‐pollination treatment. Unexpectedly, there were no significant differences between groups in percent change in leaf length, change in flower number per plant between seasons, or die probability of shoot and inflorescence production. Although there was a strong correlation between leaf size and die number of flowers produced within a season, associations between leaf size and traits related to current or future reproduction were not consistent. Like other epiphytic orchids, pollination limitation occurred within a single season in C. falcata., but increases in fruit production also resulted in reduced lifetime fitness as estimated by a compounded fitness index. Contrary to all other epiphytic orchids studied, long‐term adjustments to increased fruit production in C. falcata through reduction in future growth or flower and inflorescence production were either minor or lacking. Our results suggest that the nature of plant strategies associated with resource constraints during sexual reproduction may be dependent on whether or not plants have evolved traits that are costly.  相似文献

The pollination biology of the nectarless orchid Pogonia minor was investigated in central Japan. The investigation revealed that the solitary flowers failed to attract pollinators, while high rates of fruit set were observed in the natural population. Comparable levels of fruit set were obtained in bagged, artificial self‐pollinated and artificial cross‐pollinated plants, indicating that the species is not pollinator‐limited for fruit set under natural conditions. Autonomous self‐pollination in P. minor resulted from a reduced rostellum, which allowed contact between the pollinia and the stigma. Self‐pollination is thought to be an adaptive response that provides reproductive assurance under conditions of pollinator limitation. Since pollen limitation is generally known to be frequent among deceptive orchids, strong pollen limitation is probably a driving force in the autonomous self‐pollination mechanism in the nectarless orchid P. minor.  相似文献

Hummingbird-pollinated flowers are frequently subjected to nectar robbing. In this paper, I examine the impact of nectar robbing on plant reproductive success on a hummingbird-pollinated species. After studying the basic aspects of the floral morphology and reproduction of Macleania bullata (Ericaceae) in a tropical montane wet forest in southwest Colombia, I examined the percent of flowers robbed and the effect of nectar robbery on fruit set. The flowers of this species are typical for plants pollinated by long-bill hummingbirds. They are protandrous and open for four days. Fruit production requires a pollinator visit; fruit set following pollinator exclusion was zero. Fruit set following xenogamous pollen transfer (36.8%) differed significantly from that of population controls (11.9%) and of autogamous pollen transfer (6.3%). Nectar volume, sugar concentration and sugar production were measured at daily intervals from bud opening until the fading of flowers. Daily nectar production (both volume and amount of sugar) varied considerably with flower age. Sugar production peaked on the second day, coinciding with the male phase. The frequency of nectar robbing in the studied population was very high (75% of examined flowers) and was positively correlated with reduced fruit set. I discuss the probability of a relation between reduced fruit set on robbed flowers and an energetic investment. Robbing by non-pollinating visitors can suppose the plant to re-synthesize more nectar. The high incidence of nectar robbing impugns the advantage of specialization.  相似文献

Strong evidence exists that fragmentation negatively affects pollination and plant reproduction, but little research has been conducted with regards to tropical trees. Specifically, effects of forest fragmentation on reproduction of plants with beetle‐pollinated flowers are poorly understood, and there are no data on the impact of fragmentation on reproduction in the structurally important tropical family Annonaceae. We examined the relationship between fragment size, pollinator abundance and seed set of beetle‐pollinated Anaxagorea dolichocarpa (Annonaceae) in a disturbed Brazilian Atlantic rainforest. Flower and fruit production and abundance of pollinators were quantified over ten months in three large (306–388 ha) and three small (6–14 ha) forest fragments. We recorded per flower pollinator abundance, resulting fruit set (fruits per flower) and seed set (monocarps per fruit) for a total of 209 individually marked flowers, and compared pollinator abundance in 186 flowers across all fragments. Flower and fruit production differed among fragments, but were similar for the combined large and small fragments. Between 64.8% (large fragments) and 66.3% (small fragments) of flowers received at least one pollinator. We found no significant difference in pollinator numbers between large and small fragments, and no correlation between pollinator abundance and fruit and seed set. A single visitor had a high probability of pollinating a flower. We conclude that 1) fragment size had no influence on pollinator number and plant reproductive success, and 2) generalist behavior of the pollinating beetles mitigate the risk of pollination failure for the reproductively specialized plant. However, further research may yet reveal genetic impoverishment of populations in small fragments due to restricted pollinator movements.  相似文献

Female reproductive success, fruit and seed-set and factors affecting them were measured for 3 years (1995–1997) for 24 populations of Primula sieboldii E. Morren, a threatened Japanese plant species in a highly fragmented landscape in southern Hokkaido. The smaller populations (genets <=; 3) set almost no seeds consistently during the study years. In larger populations (genets >= 7), proportions of failed flowers without damage from fungi or herbivores were relatively high, but fruit set per flower varied among the populations in 1995. Correlations of fruit (r = 0.589, P = 0.011) and seed- set (r = 0.688, P < 0.01) with population pollinator availability were highly significant. In 1995, pollination failure would be the most plausible reason for the variation in reproductive success among the populations. However, pollinator availability was relatively high in all populations in 1996 and 1997. In these years, higher proportions of fruit failed because of antagonistic biological interactions. In the populations with poor pollinator availability in 1995, mean fruit and seed-sets were greater in the long-styled morph than in the short-styled morph. Such between-morph differences are thought to be caused by partial self-compatibility of the long-styled morph and the results of hand pollination experiments support this hypothesis.  相似文献

Pollination is critical to fruit production, but the interactions of pollination with plant resources on a plant's reproductive and vegetative features are largely overlooked. We examined the influences of pollination, irrigation and fertilisation on the performance of almond, Prunus dulcis, in northern California. We used a full‐factorial design to test for the effects of pollination limitation on fruit production and foliage variables of whole trees experiencing four resource treatments: (i) normal water and nutrients, (ii) reduced water, (iii) no nutrients, and (iv) reduced water and no nutrients. In each of these combinations, we applied three pollination treatments: hand‐cross pollination, open‐pollination and pollinator exclusion. Pollination strongly affected yield even under reduced water and no nutrient applications. Hand‐cross pollination resulted in over 50% fruit set with small kernels, while open‐pollinated flowers showed over 30% fruit set with moderate‐sized kernels. Pollinator‐excluded flowers had a maximum fruit set of 5%, with big and heavy kernels. Reduced water interacted with the open‐ and hand‐cross pollination treatments, reducing yield more than in the pollinator exclusion treatment. The number of kernels negatively influenced the number of leaves, and reduced water and no nutrient applications interacted with the pollination treatments. Overall, our results indicate that the influences of pollination on fruit tree yield interact with the plant availability of nutrients and water and that excess pollination can reduce fruit quality and the production of leaves for photosynthesis. Such information is critical to understand how pollination influences fruit tree performance.  相似文献
